In the paradigmatic example of quantum measurements, whenever one measures a system which starts in a superposition of two states of a conserved quantity, it jumps to one of the two states, implying different final values for the quantity that should have been conserved. The standard law of conservation for quantum mechanics handles this jump by stating only that the total distribution of the conserved quantity over repeated measurements is unchanged, but states nothing about individual cases. Here however we show that one can go beyond this and have conservation in each individual instance. We made our arguments in the case of angular momentum of a particle on a circle, where many technicalities simplify, and bring arguments to show that this holds in full generality. Hence we argue that the conservation law in quantum mechanics should be rewritten, to go beyond its hitherto statistical formulation, to state that the total of a conserved quantity is unchanged in every individual measurement outcome. As a further crucial element, we show that conservation can be localised at the level of the system of interest and its relevant frame of reference, and is independent on any assumptions on the distribution of the conserved quantity over the entire universe., Comment: 8 pages, 1 table

Transfer of conserved quantities between two remote regions is generally assumed to be a rather trivial process: a flux of particles carrying the conserved quantities propagates from one region to another. We however demonstrate a flow of angular momentum from one region to another across a region of space in which there is a vanishingly small probability of any particles (or fields) being present. Human social behavior is influenced by individual differences in social preferences. Social value orientation (SVO) is a measurable personality trait which indicates the relative importance an individual places on their own and on others' welfare when making decisions. SVO and other individual difference variables are strong predictors of human behavior and social outcomes. However, there are transient changes human behavior associated with emotions that are not captured by individual differences alone. Integral emotions, the emotions which arise in direct response to a decision-making scenario, have been linked to temporary shifts in decision-making preferences. In this work, we investigated the effects of moderating social preferences with integral emotions in multi-agent societies. We developed Svoie, a method for designing agents which make decisions based on established SVO policies, as well as alternative integral emotion policies in response to task outcomes. We conducted simulation experiments in a resource-sharing task environment, and compared societies of Svoie agents with societies of agents with fixed SVO policies. We find that societies of agents which adapt their behavior through integral emotions achieved similar collective welfare to societies of agents with fixed SVO policies, but with significantly reduced inequality between the welfare of agents with different SVO traits. We observed that by allowing agents to change their policy in response to task outcomes, agents can moderate their behavior to achieve greater social equality. \end{abstract}, Comment: 21 pages, 2 figures, accepted at COINE 2023

Here we introduce the concept of classical input - quantum output (C-Q) non-signalling boxes, a generalisation of the classical input - classical output (C-C) non-signalling boxes. We argue that studying such objects leads to a better understanding of the relation between quantum nonlocality and non-locality beyond quantum mechanics. The main issue discussed in the paper is whether there exist 'genuine' C-Q boxes or all C-Q boxes can be built from objects already known, namely C-C boxes acting on pre-shared entangled quantum particles. We show that large classes of C-Q boxes are non-genuine. In particular, we show that all bi-partite C-Q boxes with outputs that are pure states are non-genuine. We also present various strategies for addressing the general problem, i.e. for multi-partite C-Q boxes which output mixed states, whose answer is still open. Finally, we show that even some very simple non-genuine C-Q boxes require large amounts of C-C nonlocal correlations in order to simulate them., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in Quantum

Teleportation allows Alice to send a pre-prepared quantum state to Bob using only pre-shared entanglement and classical communication. Here we show that it is possible to teleport a state which is also $\it{post}$-selected. Post-selection of a state $\Phi$ means that after Alice has finished her experiment she performs a measurement and only keeps runs of the experiment where the measurement outcome is $\Phi$. We also demonstrate pre and post-selected $\it{port}$-based teleportation. Finally we use these protocols to perform instantaneous non-local quantum computation on pre and post-selected systems, and significantly reduce the entanglement required to instantaneously measure an arbitrary non-local variable of spatially separated pre and post-selected systems., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, updated version accepted for publication in Quantum

Messaging between two parties and in the group setting has enjoyed widespread attention both in practice, and, more recently, from the cryptographic community. One of the main challenges in the area is constructing secure (end-to-end encrypted) and efficient messaging protocols for group conversations. The popular messaging applications WhatsApp and Signal utilise a protocol in which, instead of sharing a single group key, members have individual \textit{sender keys}, which are shared with all other group members. The Sender Keys protocol is claimed to offer forward security guarantees. However, despite its broad adoption in practice, it has never been studied formally in the cryptographic literature. In this paper we present the first analysis of the Sender Keys protocol along with some prospective improvements. To this end, we introduce a new cryptographic primitive, develop a game-based security model, present a security analysis in the passive and active settings, and propose several improvements to the protocol., Comment: 6 pages.
