The $\gamma$ decays of the Isovector Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) of the deformed nucleus $^{154}$Sm from $2^+_1$-Smekal-Raman and elastic scattering were measured using linearly polarized, quasi-monochromatic photon beams. The two scattering processes were disentangled through their distinct angular distributions. Their branching ratio and cross sections were determined at six excitation energies covering the $^{154}$Sm GDR. Both agree with the predictions of the geometrical model for the GDR and establish $\gamma$ decay as an observable sensitive to the structure of the resonance. Consequently, the data place strong constraints on the nuclear shape, including the degree of triaxiality. The derived $^{154}$Sm shape parameters $\beta=0.2926(26)$ and $\gamma=5.0(14)$ agree well with other measurements and recent Monte Carlo Shell-Model calculations., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables

Within the Energy Density Functional (EDF) approach, the use of mean-field wave-functions deliberately breaking (some) symmetries of the underlying Hamiltonian is an efficient and largely utilized way to incorporate static correlations. However, the restoration of broken symmetries is eventually mandatory to recover the corresponding quantum numbers and to achieve a more precise description of nuclear properties. While symmetry-restored calculations are routinely performed to study ground-state properties and low-lying excitations, similar applications to the nuclear response are essentially limited to either formal studies or to schematic models. In the present paper, the effect of angular momentum restoration on the monopole and quadrupole responses of doubly open-shell nuclei is investigated. Based on deformed Skyrme-Random Phase Approximation (RPA) calculations, the exact Angular Momentum Projection (AMP) is implemented in the calculation of the multipole strength functions, thus defining a projection after variation (PAV-RPA) scheme. The method is employed for the first time in a realistic study to investigate the effect of AMP on the coupling of monopole and quadrupole modes in $^{24}$Mg resulting from its intrinsic deformation., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

"Why is the EoS for tin so soft?" is a longstanding question, which prevents us from determining the nuclear incompressibility $K_\infty$ accurately. To solve this puzzle, a fully self-consistent quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) plus quasiparticle-vibration coupling (QPVC) approach based on Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov is developed. We show that the many-body correlations introduced by QPVC, which shift the ISGMR energy in Sn isotopes by about 0.4 MeV more than the energy in $^{208}$Pb, play a crucial role in providing a unified description of the ISGMR in Sn and Pb isotopes. The best description of the experimental strength functions is given by SV-K226 and KDE0, which are characterized by incompressibility values $K_\infty=$ 226 MeV and 229 MeV, respectively, at mean field level.

A complete solution to the inverse problem of Kohn-Sham (KS) density functional theory is proposed. Our method consists of two steps. First, the effective KS potential is determined from the ground state density of a given system. Then, the knowledge of the potentials along a path in the space of densities is exploited in a line integration formula to determine numerically the KS energy of that system. A possible choice for the density path is proposed. A benchmark in the case of a simplified yet realistic nuclear system is shown to be successful, so that the method seems promising for future applications.

We discuss the construction of a nuclear Energy Density Functional (EDF) from ab initio calculations, and we advocate the need of a methodical approach that is free from ad hoc assumptions. The equations of state (EoS) of symmetric nuclear and pure neutron matter are computed using the chiral NNLO$_{\rm sat}$ and the phenomenological AV4$^\prime$+UIX$_{c}$ Hamiltonians as inputs in the Self-consistent Green's Function (SCGF) and Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC) methods, respectively. We propose a convenient parametrization of the EoS as a function of the Fermi momentum and fit it on the SCGF and AFDMC calculations. We apply the ab initio-based EDF to carry out an analysis of the binding energies and charge radii of different nuclei in the local density approximation. The NNLO$_{\rm sat}$-based EDF produces encouraging results, whereas the AV4$^\prime$+UIX$_{c}$-based one is farther from experiment. Possible explanations of these different behaviors are suggested, and the importance of gradient and spin-orbit terms is analyzed. Our work paves the way for a practical and systematic way to merge ab initio nuclear theory and DFT, while at the same time it sheds light on some of the critical aspects of this procedure., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

The absolute differential cross sections for small-angle proton elastic scattering off the nuclei $^{12,14-17}$C have been measured in inverse kinematics at energies near 700 MeV/u at GSI Darmstadt. The hydrogen-filled ionization chamber IKAR served simultaneously as a gas target and a detector for the recoil protons. The projectile scattering angles were measured with multi-wire tracking detectors. The radial nuclear matter density distributions and the root-mean-square nuclear matter radii were deduced from the measured cross sections using the Glauber multiple-scattering theory. A possible neutron halo structure in $^{15}$C, $^{16}$C and $^{17}$C is discussed. The obtained data show evidence for a halo structure in the $^{15}$C nucleus.

We present recent results on the structure of the one-valence-particle $^{41}$Ca and $^{49}$Ca, and one-valence-hole $^{47}$Ca, nuclei. The isotopes of interest were populated via the cold-neutron capture reactions $^{40}$Ca(n,$\gamma$), $^{48}$Ca(n,$\gamma$) and $^{46}$Ca(n,$\gamma$), respectively. The experiments were performed at the Institut Laue-Langevin, within the EXILL campaign, which employed a large array of HPGe detectors. The $\gamma$ decay and level schemes of these nuclei were investigated by $\gamma$-ray coincidence relationships, leading to the identification of 41, 10, and 6 new transitions in $^{41}$Ca, $^{47}$Ca, and $^{49}$Ca, respectively. Branching ratios and intensities were extracted for the $\gamma$ decay from each state, and $\gamma$-ray angular correlations were performed to establish a number of transition multipolarities and mixing ratios, thus helping in the spin assignment of the states. The experimental findings are discussed along with microscopic, self-consistent beyond-mean-field calculations performed with the Hybrid Configuration Mixing model, based on a Skyrme SkX Hamiltonian. The latter suggests that a fraction of the low-spin states of the $^{41}$Ca, $^{49}$Ca, and $^{47}$Ca nuclei is characterized by the coexistence of either 2p-1h and 1p-2h excitations, or couplings between single-particle/hole degrees of freedom and collective vibrations (phonons) of the doubly-magic "core".

The direct $\gamma$-decays of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) and the giant quadrupole resonance (GQR) of $^{208}$Pb to low-lying states are investigated by means of a microscopic self-consistent model. The model considers effects beyond the linear response approximation. The strong sensitivity of $\gamma$-decay to the isospin of the involved states is proven. By comparing their decay widths, a much larger weight of the $3_{1}^{-}$ component in the GQR wave function of $^{208}$Pb is deduced, with respect to the weight of the $2_{1}^{+}$ component in the GDR wave function. Thus, we have shown that $\gamma$-decay is a unique probe of the resonance wave functions, and a testground for nuclear structure models., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

A formula to evaluate the effects of a general deformation on the Coulomb direct contribution to the energy of the Isobaric Analog State (IAS) is presented and studied via a simple yet physical model. The toy model gives a reasonable account of microscopic deformed Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov (HFB) calculations in a test case, and provides a guidance when predicting unknown IAS energies. Thus, deformed HFB calculations, to predict the IAS energies, are performed for several neutron-deficient medium-mass and heavy nuclei which are now planned to be studied experimentally.

The Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model was devised to test the validity of different approximate formalisms to treat many-particle systems. The model was constructed to be exactly solvable and yet non-trivial, in order to capture some of the main features of real physical systems. In the present contribution, we explicitly review the fact that different many-body approximations commonly used in different fields in physics clearly fail to describe the exact LMG solution. With similar assumptions as those adopted for the LMG model, we propose a new Hamiltonian based on a general two-body interaction. The new model (Extended LMG) is not only more general than the original LMG model and, therefore, with a potentially larger spectrum of applicability, but also the physics behind its exact solution can be much better captured by common many-body approximations. At the basis of this improvement lies a new term in the Hamiltonian that depends on the number of constituents and polarizes the system; the associated symmetry breaking is discussed, together with some implications for the study of more realistic systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in JPhysG (Letter)

In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. C 101, 014305 (2020)], Dong and Shang claim that the Skyrme original tensor interaction is invalid. Their conclusion is based on the misconception that the Fourier transform of tensor interaction is difficult or even impossible, so that the Skrme-type tensor interaction was introduced in an unreasonable way. We disagree on their claim. In this note, we show that one can easily get the Skyrme force in momentum space by Fourier transformation if one starts from a general central, spin-orbit or tensor interaction with a radial dependence., Comment: 3 pages, 0 figures

The electron capture process plays an important role in the evolution of the core collapse of a massive star that precedes the supernova explosion. In this study, the electron capture on nuclei in stellar environment is described in the relativistic energy density functional framework, including both the finite temperature and nuclear pairing effects. Relevant nuclear transitions $J^\pi = 0^\pm, 1^\pm, 2^\pm$ are calculated using the finite temperature proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation with the density-dependent meson-exchange effective interaction DD-ME2. The pairing and temperature effects are investigated in the Gamow-Teller transition strength as well as the electron capture cross sections and rates for ${}^{44}$Ti and ${}^{56}$Fe in stellar environment. It is found that the pairing correlations establish an additional unblocking mechanism similar to the finite temperature effects, that can allow otherwise blocked single-particle transitions. Inclusion of pairing correlations at finite temperature can significantly alter the electron capture cross sections, even up to a factor of two for ${}^{44}$Ti, while for the same nucleus electron capture rates can increase by more than one order of magnitude. The dipole polarizability of stable even-mass tin isotopes 112,114,116,118,120,124 was extracted from inelastic proton scattering experiments at 295 MeV under very forward angles performed at RCNP. Predictions from energy density functionals cannot account for the present data and the polarizability of 208Pb simultaneously. The evolution of the polarizabilities in neighboring isotopes indicates a kink at 120Sn while all model results show a nearly linear increase with mass number after inclusion of pairing corrections., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. The relativistic and nonrelativistic finite temperature proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (FT-PNQRPA) methods are developed to study the interplay of the pairing and temperature effects on the Gamow-Teller excitations in open-shell nuclei, as well as to explore the model dependence of the results by using two rather different frameworks for effective nuclear interactions. The Skyrme-type functional SkM* is employed in the nonrelativistic framework, while the density-dependent meson-exchange interaction DD-ME2 is implemented in the relativistic approach. Both the isoscalar and isovector pairing interactions are taken into account within the FT-PNQRPA. Model calculations show that below the critical temperatures the Gamow-Teller excitations display a sensitivity to both the finite temperature and pairing effects, and this demonstrates the necessity for implementing both in the theoretical framework. The established FT-PNQRPA opens perspectives for the future complete and consistent description of astrophysically relevant weak interaction processes in nuclei at finite temperature such as $\beta$-decays, electron capture, and neutrino-nucleus reactions., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, published in Physical Review C

Nuclear Density Functional Theory (DFT) plays a prominent role in the understanding of nuclear structure, being the approach with the widest range of applications. Hohenberg and Kohn theorems warrant the existence of a nuclear Energy Density Functional (EDF), yet its form is unknown. Current efforts to build a nuclear EDF are hindered by the lack of a strategy for systematic improvement. In this context, alternative approaches should be pursued and, so far, an unexplored avenue is that related to the inverse DFT problem. DFT is based on the one-to-one correspondence between Kohn-Sham (KS) potentials and densities. The exact EDF produces the exact density, so that from the knowledge of experimental or {\it ab initio} densities one may deduce useful information through reverse engineering. The idea has already been proven to be useful in the case of electronic systems. The general problem should be dealt with in steps, and the objective of the present work is to focus on testing algorithms to extract the Kohn-Sham potential within the simplest ansatz from the knowledge of the experimental neutron and proton densities. We conclude that while robust algorithms exist, the experimental densities present some critical aspects. Finally, we provide some perspectives for future works.

One of the few exact results for the description of the time-evolution of an inhomogeneous, interacting many-particle system is given by the Harmonic Potential Theorem (HPT). The relevance of this theorem is that it sets a tight constraint on time-dependent many-body approximations. In this contribution, we show that the original formulation of the HPT is valid also for the case of spin-, velocity- and density-dependent interactions. This result is completely general and relevant, among the rest, for nuclear structure theory both in the case of ab initio and of more phenomenological approaches. As an example, we report on a numerical implementation by testing the small-amplitude limit of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock -- also known as Random Phase Approximation (RPA) -- for the translational frequencies of a neutron system trapped in a harmonic potential., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure. We study double charge-exchange phonon states in neutron-rich nuclei, in particular the double isobaric analog states and the double Gamow-Teller excitations, induced by the double isospin operator $\sum_{i,j=1}^At_-(i) t_-(j)$ and spin-isospin operator $\sum_{i,j=1}^A{\sigma}(i) t_-(i){\sigma}(j) t_-(j)$, respectively. We employ quartic commutator relations to evaluate the average energies $E_{\rm DIAS} - 2E_{\rm IAS}$ and $E_{\rm DGTR}-E_{\rm DIAS} - 2(E_{\rm GTR}-E_{\rm IAS})$, and conventional double commutator relations to evaluate the average energies of $E_{\rm GTR}-E_{\rm IAS}$ and $E_{\rm IAS}$. We have found that the corrections due to quartic commutators follow the approximate laws: $E_{\rm DIAS} - 2E_{\rm IAS}\approx \frac{3}{2} A^{-1/3}$ MeV and $E_{\rm DGTR}-E_{\rm DIAS} - 2(E_{\rm GTR}-E_{\rm IAS})\approx 16 A^{-1}$ MeV. While the former is dominated by direct Coulomb effects, since Coulomb exchange cancels out to some extent with isospin symmetry breaking contributions originated form the nuclear strong force, the latter is sensitive to the difference in strength between the spin and spin-isospin chanels of the strong interaction.

Absolute differential cross sections for elastic $p^7$Be and $p^8$B small-angle scattering were measured in inverse kinematics at an energy of 0.7 GeV/u at GSI Darmstadt. The hydrogen-filled ionization chamber IKAR was used as an active target to detect the recoil protons. The projectile tracking and isotope identification were performed with multi-wire proportional chambers and scintillation detectors. The measured cross sections were analysed using the Glauber multiple-scattering theory. The root-mean-square (rms) nuclear matter radii $R_{\rm m} = 2.42 (4)$ fm for $^7$Be and $R_{\rm m} = 2.58 (6)$ fm for $^8$B were obtained. The radial density distribution deduced for $^8$B exhibits a proton halo structure with the rms halo radius $R_{\rm h} = 4.24 (25)$ fm. In the present work, the isovector dipole responses, both in the resonance region and in the low-energy sector, are investigated using the microscopic nuclear Energy Density Functionals (EDFs). The self-consistent QRPA model based on Skyrme Hartree Fock BCS approach is applied to study the evolution of the isovector dipole strength by increasing neutron number and temperature. First, the isovector dipole strength and excitation energies are investigated for the Ni isotopic chain at zero temperature. The evolution of the low-energy dipole strength is studied as a function of the neutron number. In the second part, the temperature dependence of the isovector dipole excitations is studied using the self-consistent finite temperature QRPA, below and above the critical temperatures. It is shown that new excited states become possible due to the thermally occupied states above the Fermi level, and opening of the new excitations channels. In addition, temperature leads to fragmentation of the low-energy strength around the neutron separation energies, and between 9 and 12 MeV. We find that the cumulative sum of the strength below E$\leq12$ MeV decreases in open-shell nuclei due to the vanishing of the pairing correlations as temperature increases up to T=1 MeV. The analysis of the transition densities in the low-energy region shows that the proton and neutron transition densities display a mixed pattern: both isoscalar and isovector motion of protons and neutrons are obtained inside nuclei, while the neutron transition density is dominant at the surface region., Comment: Contribution to the special issue of the EPJA on the topic "Giant, Pygmy, Pairing Resonances and related topics" dedicated to the memory of Pier Francesco Bortignon

We perform Time Dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) calculations to investigate the small amplitude dipole response of selected neutron-rich nuclei and Sn isotopes. A detailed comparison with the dipole strength predicted by Random-Phase Approximation (RPA) calculations is presented for the first time. TDHF results are also confronted to Vlasov calculations, to explore up to which extent a semi-classical picture can explain the properties of the nuclear response. The focus is on the low-energy response, below the Giant Dipole Resonance region, where different modes of non negligible strength are identified. We show that the relative weight of these excitations evolves with nuclear global features, such as density profile and neutron skin, which in turn reflect impor tant properties of the nuclear effective interaction. A thorough analysis of the associated transition densities turns out to be quite useful to better characterize the mixed isoscalar(IS)/isovector(IV) nature of the different modes and their surface/volume components. In particular, we show that the dipole response in the so-called Pygmy Dipole Resonance region corresponds to isoscalar-like surface oscillations, of larger strength in nuclei with a more diffuse surface. The ratio between the IV and IS Energy Weighted Sum Rule fractions exhausted in this region is shown to almost linearly increase with the neutron skin thickness in Sn isotopes., Comment: 16 pages, 20 figures

The present contribution does not aim at replacing the huge and often excellent literature on DFT for atomic nuclei, but tries to provide an updated introduction to this topic. The goal would be, ideally, to help a fresh M.Sc. or Ph.D. student (or a researcher from other fields) to become acquainted with some basic concepts, and then move to the specialized textbooks or papers with some ability for orienteering. We first introduce the basics of DFT, and show the difference with the "naive" mean-field theory, that is doomed to fail as a model even in the simple case of uniform nuclear matter. We introduce the Energy Density Functionals (EDFs) that are used in nuclear structure, with few examples of their applications. The concepts of symmetry breaking and restoration are briefly discussed. We also include an introduction to the time-dependent extension of DFT that, so far, has been implemented essentially only in the adiabatic approximation and has been applied mainly to the study of nuclear vibrations. We present a study on the isoscalar quadrupole strength in tin nuclei, focusing mainly on the low-energy region. The calculations are performed using the Skyrme type energy density functionals within the fully self-consistent quasiparticle random phase approximation, allowing for a good description of the experimental data for the first 2$^+$ state and the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance. It is found that the first $2^+$ state and the low-energy quadrupole states between 3 and 6 MeV display an opposite behavior with increasing neutron number. While the strength of the first $2^+$ state decreases, some excited states start to accumulate between 3 and 6 MeV, and increase their strength with increasing neutron number. This low-energy region between 3 and 6 MeV is quite sensitive to the changes in the shell structure with increasing neutron number. In particular, between $^{116}$Sn and $^{132}$Sn, the filling of the neutron orbitals with large values of $j$, has an important impact on the low-energy region. Our analysis shows that the low-energy states have a non-collective character, except the first 2$^+$ state. In addition, the states in the low-energy region above 5 MeV display an interesting pattern: with the increase of the neutron number, their strength increases and their nature changes, namely they switch from proton excitations to neutron-dominated one. We conclude that the low-energy quadrupole states between 3 and 6 MeV can provide information about the shell evolution in open-shell nuclei., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

In this work, the Coulomb mixing and the isospin mixing in the ground states of even-even nuclei are evaluated in perturbation theory. The calculation of the isospin mixing is performed by using the connection to isovector monopole resonance properties. The uncertainty in the results that depends on different choices of the Skyrme interactions is shown. While Coulomb mixing turns out to be large in the ground states of heavy nuclei, isospin mixing is very small., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures

We analyze and propose a solution to the apparent inconsistency between our current knowledge of the Equation of State of asymmetric nuclear matter, the energy of the Isobaric Analog State (IAS) in a heavy nucleus such as 208Pb, and the isospin symmetry breaking forces in the nuclear medium. This is achieved by performing state-of-the-art Hartree-Fock plus Random Phase Approximation calculations of the IAS that include all isospin symmetry breaking contributions. To this aim, we propose a new effective interaction that is successful in reproducing the IAS excitation energy without compromising other properties of finite nuclei., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. The effect of temperature on the evolution of the isovector dipole and isoscalar quadrupole excitations in $^{68}$Ni and $^{120}$Sn nuclei is studied within the fully self-consistent finite temperature quasiparticle random phase approximation framework, based on the Skyrme-type SLy5 energy density functional. The new low-energy excitations emerge due to the transitions from thermally occupied states to the discretized continuum at finite temperatures, whereas the isovector giant dipole resonance is not strongly impacted by the increase of temperature. The radiative dipole strength at low-energies is also investigated for the $^{122}$Sn nucleus, becoming compatible with the available experimental data when the temperature is included. In addition, both the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance and low-energy quadrupole states are sensitive to the temperature effect: while the centroid energies decrease in the case of the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance, the collectivity of the first $2^{+}$ state is quenched and the opening of new excitation channels fragments the low-energy strength at finite temperatures., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Density Functional Theory (DFT) is a powerful and accurate tool exploited in Nuclear Physics to investigate the ground-state and some collective properties of nuclei along the whole nuclear chart. Models based on DFT are, however, not suitable for the description of single-particle dynamics in nuclei. Following the field theoretical approach by A. Bohr and B. R. Mottelson to describe nuclear interactions between single-particle and vibrational degrees of freedom, we have undertaken important steps to build a microscopic dynamic nuclear model. In connection to that, one important issue that needs to be better understood is the renormalization of the effective interaction in the particle-vibration approach. One possible way to renormalize the interaction is the so called {\it subtraction method}. We propose a self-consistent quasi-particle random phase approximation (QRPA) plus quasi-particle-vibration coupling (QPVC) model with Skyrme interactions to describe the width and the line shape of giant resonances in open-shell nuclei, in which the effect of superfluidity should be taken into account in both the ground state and the excited states. We apply the new model to the Gamow-Teller resonance in the superfluid nucleus $^{120}$Sn, including both the isoscalar spin-triplet and the isovector spin-singlet pairing interactions. The strength distribution in $^{120}$Sn is well reproduced and the underlying microscopic mechanisms, related to QPVC and also to isoscalar pairing, are analyzed in detail., Comment: 32 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables

The model dependence in the correlations of the neutron-skin thickness in heavy nuclei with various symmetry energy parameters is analyzed by using several families of systematically varied microscopic mean field models. Such correlations show a varying degree of model dependence once the results for all the different families are combined. Some mean field models associated with similar values of the symmetry energy slope parameter at saturation density $L$, and pertaining to different families, yield a greater-than-expected spread in the neutron-skin thickness of the $^{208}$Pb nucleus. The effective value of the symmetry energy slope parameter $L_{\rm eff}$, determined by using the nucleon density profiles of the finite nucleus and the density derivative $S^\prime(\rho)$ of the symmetry energy starting from about saturation density up to low densities typical of the surface of nuclei, seems to account for the spread in the neutron-skin thickness for the models with similar $L$. The differences in the values of $L_{\rm eff}$ are mainly due to the small differences in the nucleon density distributions of heavy nuclei in the surface region and the behavior of the symmetry energy at subsaturation densities., Comment: 10 pages including 6 figures

We evaluate the second--order (beyond--mean--field) contribution to the equation of state of nuclear matter with the effective Skyrme force and use cutoff and dimensional regularizations to treat the ultraviolet divergence produced by the zero--range character of this interaction. An adjustment of the force parameters is then performed in both cases to remove any double counting generated by the explicit computation of beyond--mean--field corrections with the Skyrme force. In addition, we include at second order the rearrangement terms associated to the density--dependent part of the Skyrme force and discuss their effect. The gamma-ray decay of excited states of the one-valence-proton nucleus 133Sb has been studied using cold-neutron induced fission of 235U and 241Pu targets, during the EXILL campaign at the ILL reactor in Grenoble. By using a highly efficient HPGe array, coincidences between gamma-rays prompt with the fission event and those delayed up to several tens of microseconds were investigated, allowing to observe, for the first time, high-spin excited states above the 16.6 micros isomer. Lifetimes analysis, performed by fast-timing techniques with LaBr3(Ce) scintillators, reveals a difference of almost two orders of magnitude in B(M1) strength for transitions between positive-parity medium-spin yrast states. The data are interpreted by a newly developed microscopic model which takes into account couplings between core excitations (both collective and non-collective) of the doubly magic nucleus 132Sn and the valence proton, using the Skyrme effective interaction in a consistent way. The results point to a fast change in the nature of particle-core excitations with increasing spin.

We review several experimental and theoretical advances that emphasise common aspects of the study of T=1 and T=0 pairing correlations in nuclei. We first discuss several empirical evidences of the special role played by the T=1 pairing interaction. In particular, we show the peculiar features of the nuclear pairing interaction in the low density regime, and possible outcomes such as the BCS-BEC crossover in nuclear matter and, in an analogous way, in loosely bound nuclei. We then move to the competition between T=1 and T=0 pairing correlations. The effect of such competition on the low-lying spectra is studied in N=Z odd-odd nuclei by using a three-body model; it is shown that the inversion of the 0+ and 1+ states near the ground state, and the strong magnetic dipole transitions between them, can be considered as a clear manifestation of strong T=0 pairing correlations in these nuclei. The effect of T=0 pairing correlations is also quite evident if one studies charge-changing transitions. The Gamow-Teller (GT) states in N=Z+2 nuclei are studied here by using self-consistent HFB+QRPA calculations in which the T=0 pairing interaction is taken into account. Strong GT states are found, near the ground state of daughter nuclei; these are compared with available experimental data from charge-exchange reactions, and such comparison can pinpoint the value of the strength of the T=0 interaction. The information on the symmetry energy and its density dependence is deduced by comparing the available data on the electric dipole polarizability $\alpha_D$ of ${}^{68}$Ni, ${}^{120}$Sn, and ${}^{208}$Pb with the predictions of the Random Phase Approximation, using a representative set of nuclear energy density functionals. The calculated values of $\alpha_D$ are used to validate different correlations involving $\alpha_D$, the symmetry energy at the saturation density $J$, the corresponding slope parameter $L$ and the neutron skin thickness $\Delta r_{\!np}$, as suggested by the Droplet Model. A subset of models that reproduce simultaneously the measured polarizabilities in ${}^{68}$Ni, ${}^{120}$Sn, and ${}^{208}$Pb are employed to predict the values of the symmetry energy parameters at saturation density and $\Delta r_{\!np}$. The resulting intervals are: $J\!=\!30 \text{-}35$ MeV, $L\!=\!20 \text{-} 66$ MeV; and the values for $\Delta r_{\!np}$ in ${}^{68}$Ni, ${}^{120}$Sn, and ${}^{208}$Pb are in the ranges: 0.15\text{-}0.19 fm, 0.12\text{-}0.16 fm, and 0.13\text{-}0.19 fm, respectively. The strong correlation between the electric dipole polarizabilities of two nuclei is instrumental to predict the values of electric dipole polarizabilities in other nuclei., Comment: 12 pages, 2 tables and 6 figures

The Energy Density Functional theory is one of the most used methods developed in nuclear structure. It is based on the assumption that the energy of the ground state is a functional only of the density profile. The method is extremely successful within the effective force approach, noticeably the Skyrme or Gogny forces, in reproducing the nuclear binding energies and other bulk properties along the whole mass table. Although the Density Functional is in this case represented formally as the Hartree-Fock mean field of an effective force, the corresponding single-particle states in general do not reproduce the phenomenology particularly well. To overcome this difficulty, a strategy has been developed where the effective force is adjusted to reproduce directly the single particle energies, trying to keep the ground state energy sufficiently well reproduced. An alternative route, that has been developed along several years, for solving this problem is to introduce the mean field fluctuations, as represented by the collective vibrations of the nuclear system, and their influence on the single particle dynamics and structure. This is the basis of the particle-vibration coupling model. In this paper we present a formal theory of the particle-vibration coupling model based on the Green' s function method. The theory extends to realistic effective forces the macroscopic particle-vibration coupling models and the (microscopic) Nuclear Field Theory. It is formalized within the functional derivative approach to many-body theory. An expansion in diagrams is devised for the single particle self-energy and the phonon propagator. The outer crust structure and composition of a cold, non-accreting magnetar is studied. We model the outer crust to be made of fully equilibrated matter where ionized nuclei form a Coulomb crystal embedded in an electron gas. The main effects of the strong magnetic field are those of quantizing the electron motion in Landau levels and of modifying the nuclear single particle levels producing, on average, an increased binding of nucleons in nuclei present in the Coulomb lattice. The effect of an homogeneous and constant magnetic field on nuclear masses has been predicted by using a covariant density functional, in which induced currents and axial deformation due to the presence of a magnetic field that breaks time-reversal symmetry have been included self-consistently in the nucleon and meson equations of motion. Although not yet observed, for $B\gtrsim 10^{16}$G both effects contribute to produce different compositions and to enlarge the range of pressures typically present in common neutron stars. Specifically, in such a regime, the magnetic field effects on nuclei favor the appearance of heavier nuclei at low pressures. As $B$ increases, such heavier nuclei are also preferred up to larger pressures. We investigate the impact of the neutron-skin thickness Delta(R) on the energy difference between the anti-analog giant dipole resonance (AGDR), E(AGDR), and the isobaric analog state (IAS), E(IAS), in a heavy nucleus such as 208Pb. For guidance, we first develop a simple and analytic, yet physical, approach based on the Droplet Model that linearly connects the energy difference E(AGDR)-E(IAS) with Delta(R). To test this correlation on more fundamental grounds, we employ a family of systematically varied Skyrme energy density functionals where variations on the value of the symmetry energy at saturation density J are explored. The calculations have been performed within the fully self consistent Hartree-Fock (HF) plus charge-exchange random phase approximation (RPA) framework. We confirm the linear correlation within our microscopic apporach and, by comparing our results with available experimental data in 208Pb, we find that our analysis is consistent with Delta(R) = 0.204 \pm 0.009 fm, J = 31.4 \pm 0.5 MeV and a slope parameter of the symmetry energy at saturation of L = 76.4 \pm 5.4 MeV - the attached errors correspond to a lower-limit estimate of the systematic plus experimental uncertainties. These results are in agreement with those extracted from different experimental data albeit, L and Delta(R) are somewhat large when compared to previous estimations based on giant resonance studies., Comment: Submitted to Phys. In this contribution, we review some works related with the extraction of the symmetry energy parameters from isovector nuclear excitations, like the giant resonances. Then, we move to the general issue of how to assess whether correlations between a parameter of the nuclear equation of state and a nuclear observable are robust or not. From empirically determined values of some of the characteristic constants associated with homogeneous nuclear matter at saturation and sub-saturation densities, within the framework of a Skyrme-inspired energy density functional, we construct an equation of state (EoS) of nuclear matter.This EoS is then used to predict values of density slope parameters of symmetry energy $L(\rho)$, isoscalar incompressibility $K(\rho)$ and a few related quantities. The close consonance of our predicted values with the currently available ones for the density dependence of symmetry energy and incompressibility gleaned from diverse approaches offers the possibility that our method may help in settling their values in tighter bounds. We study the finite temperature Hartree-Fock-BCS approximation for selected stable Sn nuclei with zero-range Skyrme forces. Hartree Fock BCS approximation allows for a straightforward interpretation of the results since it involves u and v's which are not matrices as in HFB. Pairing transitions from superfluid to the normal state are studied with respect to the temperature. The temperature dependence of the nuclear radii and neutron skin are also analyzed. An increase of proton and neutron radii is obtained in neutron rich nuclei especially above the critical temperature. Using different Skyrme energy functionals, it is found that the correlation between the effective mass in symmetric nuclear matter and the critical temperature depends on the pairing prescription. The temperature dependence of the nucleon effective mass is also investigated, showing that proton and neutron effective masses display different behavior below and above the critical temperature, due to the small temperature dependence of the density., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

We present the covariance analysis of two successful nuclear energy density functionals, (i) a non-relativistic Skyrme functional built from a zero-range effective interaction, and (ii) a relativistic nuclear energy density functional based on density dependent meson-nucleon couplings. The covariance analysis is a useful tool for understanding the limitations of a model, the correlations between observables and the statistical errors. We show, for our selected test nucleus 208Pb, that when the constraint on a property A included in the fit is relaxed, correlations with other observables B become larger; on the other hand, when a strong constraint is imposed on A, the correlations with other properties become very small. The properties of single-particle states in the magic nuclei $^{40}$Ca and $^{208}$Pb, in particular the energies, spectroscopic factors and the effective mass, have been studied in a fully self-consistent particle-vibration coupling (PVC) approach within the framework of Skyrme energy density functional theory. All selected phonons are obtained by the Random Phase Approximation and the same Skyrme interaction is also used in the PVC vertex. We focus on the effect of the non-central two-body spin-orbit and tensor interactions on the single-particle properties. It has been found that the contributions of those terms are important to improve the results of $^{208}$Pb. The calculated single-particle energies and spectroscopic factors are compared to available experimental data. The experimental and theoretical studies of Giant Resonances, or more generally of the nuclear collective vibrations, are a well established domain in which sophisticated techniques have been introduced and firm conclusions reached after an effort of several decades. From it, information on the nuclear equation of state can be extracted, albeit not far from usual nuclear densities. In this contribution, which complements other contributions appearing in the current volume, we survey some of the constraints that have been extracted recently concerning the parameters of the nuclear symmetry energy. Isovector modes, in which neutrons and protons are in opposite phase, are a natural source of information and we illustrate the values of symmetry energy around saturation deduced from isovector dipole and isovector quadrupole states. The isotopic dependence of the isoscalar monopole energy has also been suggested to provide a connection to the symmetry energy: relevant theoretical arguments and experimental results are thoroughly discussed. This report describes the scientific aims and potentials as well as the preliminary technical design of IRIDE, an innovative tool for multi-disciplinary investigations in a wide field of scientific, technological and industrial applications. IRIDE will be a high intensity 'particle factory', based on a combination of a high duty cycle radio-frequency superconducting electron linac and of high energy lasers. Conceived to provide unique research possibilities for particle physics, for condensed matter physics, chemistry and material science, for structural biology and industrial applications, IRIDE will open completely new research possibilities and advance our knowledge in many branches of science and technology. IRIDE will contribute to open new avenues of discoveries and to address most important riddles: What does matter consist of? What is the structure of proteins that have a fundamental role in life processes? What can we learn from protein structure to improve the treatment of diseases and to design more efficient drugs? But also how does an electronic chip behave under the effect of radiations? How can the heat flow in a large heat exchanger be optimized? The scientific potential of IRIDE is far reaching and justifies the construction of such a large facility in Italy in synergy with the national research institutes and companies and in the framework of the European and international research. It will impact also on R&D work for ILC, FEL, and will be complementarity to other large scale accelerator projects. A completely microscopic beyond mean-field approach has been elaborated to overcome some intrinsic limitations of self-consistent mean-field schemes applied to nuclear systems, such as the incapability to produce some properties of single-particle states (e.g. spectroscopic factors), as well as of collective states (e.g. their damping width and their gamma decay to the ground state or to low lying states). Since commonly used effective interactions are fitted at the mean-field level, one should aim at refitting them including the desired beyond mean-field contributions in the refitting procedure. If zero-range interactions are used, divergences arise. We study the electric dipole polarizability $\alpha_D$ in ${}^{208}$Pb based on the predictions of a large and representative set of relativistic and non-relativistic nuclear mean field models. We adopt the droplet model as a guide to better understand the correlations between $\alpha_D$ and other isovector observables. Insights from the droplet model suggest that the product of $\alpha_D$ and the nuclear symmetry energy at saturation density $J$ is much better correlated with the neutron skin thickness $\Delta r_{np}$ of ${}^{208}$Pb than the polarizability alone. Correlations of $\alpha_D J$ with $\Delta r_{np}$ and with the symmetry energy slope parameter $L$ suggest that $\alpha_D J$ is a strong isovector indicator. Hence, we explore the possibility of constraining the isovector sector of thenuclear energy density functional by comparing our theoretical predictions against measurements of both $\alpha_D$ and the parity-violating asymmetry in ${}^{208}$Pb. We find that the recent experimental determination of $\alpha_D$ in ${}^{208}$Pb in combination with the range for the symmetry energy at saturation density $J=[31\pm (2)_{\rm est.}]$\,MeV suggests $\Delta r_{np}({}^{208}{\rm Pb}) = 0.165 \pm (0.009)_{\rm exp.} \pm (0.013)_{\rm theo.} \pm (0.021)_{\rm est.} {\rm fm}$ and $L= 43 \pm(6)_{\rm exp.} \pm (8)_{\rm theo.}\pm(12)_{\rm est.}$ MeV.

Experimental and theoretical efforts are being devoted to the study of observables that can shed light on the properties of the nuclear symmetry energy. We present our new results on the excitation energy [X. Roca-Maza et al., Phys. Rev. C 87, 034301 (2013)] and polarizability of the Isovector Giant Quadrupole Resonance (IVGQR), which has been the object of new experimental investigation [S. S. Henshaw et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 222501 (2011)]. We also present our theoretical analysis on the parity violating asymmetry at the kinematics of the Lead Radius Experiment [S. Abrahamyan et al. (PREx Collaboration), Phys. Empirically determined values of the nuclear volume and surface symmetry energy coefficients from nuclear masses are expressed in terms of density distributions of nucleons in heavy nuclei in the local density approximation. This is then used to extract the value of the symmetry energy slope parameter $L$. The density distributions in both spherical and well deformed nuclei calculated within microscopic framework with different energy density functionals give $L = 59.0 \pm 13.0$ MeV. Application of the method also helps in a precision determination of the neutron skin thickness of nuclei that are difficult to measure accurately., Comment: 6 pages including 3 figures, accepted in Phys. The incompressibility of finite fermionic systems is investigated using analytical approaches and microscopic models. The incompressibility of a system is directly linked to the zero-point kinetic energy of constituent fermions, and this is a universal feature of fermionic systems. In the case of atomic nuclei, this implies a constant value of the incompressibility in medium-heavy and heavy nuclei. The evolution of nuclear incompressibility along Sn and Pb isotopic chains is analyzed using global microscopic models, based on both non-relativistic and relativistic energy functionals. The result is an almost constant incompressibility in stable nuclei and systems not far from stability, and a steep decrease in nuclei with pronounced neutron excess, caused by the emergence of a soft monopole mode in neutron-rich nuclei., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Zero-range effective interactions are commonly used in nuclear physics to describe a many-body system in the mean-field framework. If they are employed in beyond- mean-field models, an artificial ultraviolet divergence is generated by the zero-range of the interaction. We analyze this problem in symmetric nuclear matter with the t0-t3 Skyrme model. In this case, the second-order energy correction diverges linearly with the momentum cutoff. After that, we extend the work to the case of nuclear matter with the full Skyrme interaction. A strong divergence related to the velocity-dependent terms of the interaction is obtained. Moreover, a global fit can be simultaneously performed for both symmetric and nuclear matter with different neutron-to-proton ratios.
