Search

Collective lattice dynamics determine essential aspects of condensed matter, such as elastic and thermal properties. These exhibit strong dependence on the length-scale, reflecting the marked wavevector dependence of lattice excitations. The extreme ultraviolet transient grating (EUV TG) approach has demonstrated the potential of accessing a wavevector range corresponding to the 10s of nm length-scale, representing a spatial scale of the highest relevance for fundamental physics and forefront technology, previously inaccessible by optical TG and other inelastic scattering methods. In this manuscript we report on the capabilities of this technique in the context of probing thermoelastic properties of matter, both in the bulk and at the surface, as well as discussing future developments and practical considerations.

The discovery of enhanced superconductivity (SC) in FeSe films grown on SrTiO3 (FeSe/STO) has revitalized the field of Fe-based superconductors. In the ultrathin limit, the superconducting transition temperature Tc is increased by almost an order of magnitude, raising new questions on the pairing mechanism. As in other unconventional superconductors, antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations have been proposed as a candidate to mediate SC in this system. Thus, it is essential to study the evolution of the spin dynamics of FeSe in the ultrathin limit to elucidate their relationship with superconductivity. Here, we investigate and compare the spin excitations in bulk and monolayer FeSe grown on STO using high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations. Despite the absence of long-range magnetic order, bulk FeSe displays dispersive magnetic excitations reminiscent of other Fe-pnictides. Conversely, the spin excitations in FeSe/STO are gapped, dispersionless, and significantly hardened relative to the bulk counterpart. By comparing our RIXS results with simulations of a bilayer Hubbard model, we connect the evolution of the spin excitations to the Fermiology of the two systems. The present study reveals a remarkable reconfiguration of spin excitations in FeSe/STO, which is essential to understand the role of spin fluctuations in the pairing mechanism.

Spontaneous magnetic order is a routine instance in three-dimensional (3D) materials but for a long time, it remained elusive in the 2D world. Recently, the first examples of (stand-alone) 2D van der Waals (vdW) crystals with magnetic order, either antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic, have been reported. In this review, we describe the state of the art of the nascent field of magnetic 2D materials focusing on synthesis, engineering, and theory aspects. We also discuss challenges and some of the many different promising directions for future work.

Unconventional quasiparticle excitations in condensed matter systems have become one of the most important research frontiers. Beyond two- and fourfold degenerate Weyl and Dirac fermions, three-, six- and eightfold symmetry protected degeneracies have been predicted however remain challenging to realize in solid state materials. Here, charge density wave compound TaTe4 is proposed to hold eightfold fermionic excitation and Dirac point in energy bands. High quality TaTe4 single crystals are prepared, where the charge density wave is revealed by directly imaging the atomic structure and a pseudogap of about 45 meV on the surface. Shubnikov de-Haas oscillations of TaTe4 are consistent with band structure calculation. Scanning tunneling microscopy reveals atomic step edge states on the surface of TaTe4. The rich phenomenology engendered by the coupling between the spin and orbital degrees of freedom has become appreciated as a key feature of many strongly-correlated electron systems. The resulting emergent physics is particularly prominent in a number of materials, from Fe-based unconventional superconductors to transition metal oxides, including manganites and vanadates. Here, we investigate the electronic ground states of $\alpha$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$, a compound that is a rare embodiment of the spin-1 Kugel-Khomskii model on the square lattice -- a paradigmatic platform to capture the physics of coupled magnetic and orbital electronic orders. We have used resonant X-ray diffraction at the Cr-$K$ edge to reveal N\'{e}el magnetic order at the in-plane wavevector $\mathbf{Q}_N = (1/2, 1/2)$ below $T_N = 112$ K, as well as an additional electronic order at the 'stripe' wavevector $\mathbf{Q}_s = (1/2, 0)$ below T$_s$ $ \sim 50$ K. These findings are examined within the framework of the Kugel-Khomskii model by a combination of mean-field and Monte-Carlo approaches, which supports the stability of the spin N\'{e}el phase with subsequent lower-temperature stripe orbital ordering, revealing a candidate mechanism for the experimentally observed peak at $\mathbf{Q}_s$. On the basis of these findings, we propose that $\alpha$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$ serves as a new platform in which to investigate multi-orbital physics and its role in the low-temperature phases of Mott insulators., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Charge density wave (CDW) order has been shown to compete and coexist with superconductivity in underdoped cuprates. Theoretical proposals for the CDW order include an unconventional $d$-symmetry form factor CDW, evidence for which has emerged from measurements, including resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ (YBCO). Here, we revisit RSXS measurements of the CDW symmetry in YBCO, using a variation in the measurement geometry to provide enhanced sensitivity to orbital symmetry. We show that the $(0\ 0.31\ L)$ CDW peak measured at the Cu $L$ edge is dominated by an $s$ form factor rather than a $d$ form factor as was reported previously. In addition, by measuring both $(0.31\ 0\ L)$ and $(0\ 0.31\ L)$ peaks, we identify a pronounced difference in the orbital symmetry of the CDW order along the $a$ and $b$ axes, with the CDW along the $a$ axis exhibiting orbital order in addition to charge order., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures + supplementary information

The study of elementary bosonic excitations is essential toward a complete description of quantum electronic solids. In this context, resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) has recently risen to becoming a versatile probe of electronic excitations in strongly correlated electron systems. The nature of the radiation-matter interaction endows RIXS with the ability to resolve the charge, spin and orbital nature of individual excitations. However, this capability has been only marginally explored to date. Here, we demonstrate a systematic method for the extraction of the character of excitations as imprinted in the azimuthal dependence of the RIXS signal. Using this novel approach, we resolve the charge, spin, and orbital nature of elastic scattering, (para-)magnon/bimagnon modes, and higher energy dd excitations in magnetically-ordered and superconducting copper-oxide perovskites (Nd2CuO4 and YBa2Cu3O6.75). Our method derives from a direct application of scattering theory, enabling us to deconstruct the complex scattering tensor as a function of energy loss. In particular, we use the characteristic tensorial nature of each excitation to precisely and reliably disentangle the charge and spin contributions to the low energy RIXS spectrum. This procedure enables to separately track the evolution of spin and charge spectral distributions in cuprates with doping. Our results demonstrate a new capability that can be integrated into the RIXS toolset, and that promises to be widely applicable to materials with intertwined spin, orbital, and charge excitations.

Charge order is now accepted as an integral constituent of cuprate high-temperature superconductors, one that is intimately related to other instabilities in the phase diagram including antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. Unlike nesting-induced Peierls-like density waves, the charge correlations in the CuO2 planes have been predicted to display a rich momentum space topology depending on the detailed fermiology of the system. However, to date charge order has only been observed along the high-symmetry Cu-O bond directions. Here, using resonant soft X-ray scattering, we investigate the evolution of the full momentum space topology of charge correlations in Ln2CuO4 (Ln=Nd, Pr) as a function of intrinsic electron doping. We report that, upon electron doping the parent Mott insulator, charge correlations first emerge in a hitherto-unobserved form, with full (Cinf) rotational symmetry in momentum-space. At higher doping levels, the orientation of charge correlations is sharply locked to the Cu-O bond high-symmetry directions, restoring a more conventional bidirectional charge order with enhanced correlation lengths. Through charge susceptibility calculations, we closely reproduce the drastic evolution in the topology of charge correlations across an antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition, highlighting the interplay between spin and charge degrees of freedom in electron-doped cuprates. Finally, using the established link between charge correlations and the underlying fermiology, we propose a revised phase diagram of Ln2CuO4 with a superconducting region extending toward the Mott limit., Comment: Submitted to Nature Physics on April 20th, 2018. We studied the magnetic ordering of thin films and bulk crystals of rutile RuO$_2$ using resonant X-ray scattering across the Ru L$_2$ absorption edge. Combining polarization analysis and azimuthal-angle dependence of the magnetic Bragg signal, we have established the presence of G-type antiferromagnetism in RuO$_2$ with T$_N$ $>$ 300 K. In addition to revealing a spin-ordered ground state in the simplest ruthenium oxide compound, the persistence of magnetic order even in nanometer-thick films lays the ground for potential applications of RuO$_2$ in antiferromagnetic spintronics., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Fine questions our interpretation of unidirectional-stripes over bidirectional-checkerboard, and illustrates his criticism by simulating a momentum space structure consistent with our data and corresponding to a checkerboard-looking real space density. Following the early discovery of stripe-like order in La-based copper-oxide superconductors, charge ordering instabilities were observed in all cuprate families. However, it has proven difficult to distinguish between uni- (stripes) and bi-directional (checkerboard) charge order in Y- and Bi-based materials. Here we use resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) to measure the two-dimensional structure factor in YBCO, in reciprocal space. Our data reveal the presence of charge stripe order, i.e. locally unidirectional density waves, suggesting it as the true microscopic nature of charge modulations in cuprates. At the same time, we find that the well-established competition between charge order and superconductivity is stronger for charge correlations across than along the stripes, which provides additional evidence for the intrinsic unidirectional nature of the charge order.

One of the pivotal questions in the physics of high-temperature superconductors is whether the low-energy dynamics of the charge carriers is mediated by bosons with a characteristic timescale. This issue has remained elusive since electronic correlations are expected to dramatically speed up the electron-boson scattering processes, confining them to the very femtosecond timescale that is hard to access even with state-of-the-art ultrafast techniques. Here we simultaneously push the time resolution and the frequency range of transient reflectivity measurements up to an unprecedented level that enables us to directly observe the 16 fs build-up of the effective electron-boson interaction in hole-doped copper oxides. This extremely fast timescale is in agreement with numerical calculations based on the t-J model and the repulsive Hubbard model, in which the relaxation of the photo-excited charges is achieved via inelastic scattering with short-range antiferromagnetic excitations., Comment: to appear in Nature Physics

The coupled electronic-structural modulations of the ligand states in IrTe$_2$ have been studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS). Distinctive pre-edge structures are observed at the Te-$M_{4,5}$ (3$d$ $\rightarrow$ 5$p$) absorption edge, indicating the presence of a Te 5$p$-Ir 5$d$ covalent state near the Fermi level. An enhancement of the REXS signal near the Te 3$d$ $\rightarrow$ 5$p$ resonance at the $Q\!=\!(1/5,0,-1/5)$ superlattice reflection is observed below the structural transition temperature $T_s\sim$ 280 K. The analysis of the energy-dependent REXS lineshape reveals the key role played by the spatial modulation of the covalent Te 5$p$-Ir 5$d$ bond-density in driving the stripe-like order in IrTe$_2$, and uncovers its coupling with the charge and/or orbital order at the Ir sites. The similarity between these findings and the charge-ordering phenomenology observed in the high-T$_c$ superconducting cuprates suggests that the iridates may harbor similar exotic phases., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

Charge-ordered ground states permeate the phenomenology of 3d-based transition metal oxides, and more generally represent a distinctive hallmark of strongly-correlated states of matter. The recent discovery of charge order in various cuprate families fueled new interest into the role played by this incipient broken symmetry within the complex phase diagram of high-Tc superconductors. Here we use resonant X-ray scattering to resolve the main characteristics of the charge-modulated state in two cuprate families: Bi2201 and YBCO. We detect no signatures of spatial modulations along the nodal direction in Bi2201, thus clarifying the inter-unit-cell momentum-structure of charge order. We also resolve the intra-unit-cell symmetry of the charge ordered state, which is revealed to be best represented by a bond-order with modulated charges on the O-2p orbitals and a prominent d-wave character. The understanding of the origin of superconductivity in cuprates has been hindered by the apparent diversity of intertwining electronic orders in these materials. We combined resonant x-ray scattering (REXS), scanning-tunneling microscopy (STM), and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to observe a charge order that appears consistently in surface and bulk, and in momentum and real space within one cuprate family, Bi2201. The observed wave vectors rule out simple antinodal nesting in the single-particle limit but match well with a phenomenological model of a many-body instability of the Fermi arcs. In search of the potential realization of novel normal-state phases on the surface of Sr2RuO4 - those stemming from either topological bulk properties or the interplay between spin-orbit coupling (SO) and the broken symmetry of the surface - we revisit the electronic structure of the top-most layers by ARPES with improved data quality as well as ab-initio LDA slab calculations. We find that the current model of a single surface layer (\surd2x\surd2)R45{\deg} reconstruction does not explain all detected features. The observed depth-dependent signal degradation, together with the close quantitative agreement with LDA+SO slab calculations based on the LEED-determined surface crystal structure, reveal that (at a minimum) the sub-surface layer also undergoes a similar although weaker reconstruction. This points to a surface-to-bulk progression of the electronic states driven by structural instabilities, with no evidence for Dirac and Rashba-type states or surface magnetism., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. We study Na2IrO3 by ARPES, optics, and band structure calculations in the local-density approximation (LDA). The weak dispersion of the Ir 5d-t2g manifold highlights the importance of structural distortions and spin-orbit coupling (SO) in driving the system closer to a Mott transition. We detect an insulating gap {\Delta}_gap = 340 meV which, at variance with a Slater-type description, is already open at 300 K and does not show significant temperature dependence even across T_N ~ 15 K. An LDA analysis with the inclusion of SO and Coulomb repulsion U reveals that, while the prodromes of an underlying insulating state are already found in LDA+SO, the correct gap magnitude can only be reproduced by LDA+SO+U, with U = 3 eV. This establishes Na2IrO3 as a novel type of Mott-like correlated insulator in which Coulomb and relativistic effects have to be treated on an equal footing., Comment: Accepted in Physical Review Letters. Neutron and x-ray scattering experiments have provided mounting evidence for spin and charge ordering phenomena in underdoped cuprates. These range from early work on stripe correlations in Nd-LSCO to the latest discovery of charge-density-waves in YBCO. Both phenomena are characterized by a pronounced dependence on doping, temperature, and an externally applied magnetic field. Here we show that these electron-lattice instabilities exhibit also a previously unrecognized bulk-surface dichotomy. Surface-sensitive electronic and structural probes uncover a temperature-dependent evolution of the CuO2 plane band dispersion and apparent Fermi pockets in underdoped Bi2201, which is directly associated with an hitherto-undetected strong temperature dependence of the incommensurate superstructure periodicity below 130K. In stark contrast, the structural modulation revealed by bulk-sensitive probes is temperature independent. These findings point to a surface-enhanced incipient charge-density-wave instability, driven by Fermi surface nesting. The electronic structure of Bi2Se3 is studied by angle-resolved photoemission and density functional theory. We show that the instability of the surface electronic properties, observed even in ultra-high-vacuum conditions, can be overcome via in-situ potassium deposition. In addition to accurately setting the carrier concentration, new Rashba-like spin-polarized states are induced, with a tunable, reversible, and highly stable spin splitting. Ab-initio slab calculations reveal that these Rashba state are derived from the 5QL quantum-well states. We observe apparent hole pockets in the Fermi surfaces of single-layer Bi-based cuprate superconductors from angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES). From detailed low-energy electron diffraction measurements and an analysis of the ARPES polarization-dependence, we show that these pockets are not intrinsic, but arise from multiple overlapping superstructure replicas of the main and shadow bands. We further demonstrate that the hole pockets reported recently from ARPES [Meng et al, Nature 462, 335 (2009)] have a similar structural origin, and are inconsistent with an intrinsic hole pocket associated with the electronic structure of a doped CuO$_2$ plane.
