Abstract

Two-dimensional leaky-wave antennas (LWAs) are a class of planar, traveling-wave radiators with attractive features of a low profile, ease of feeding, frequency reconfigurability of the radiation pattern, and polarization agility. Their use in conjunction with array feeders has been the subject of various investigations in recent decades, thanks to the additional degrees of freedom provided by the presence of multiple independent sources. Here, we provide a review of some of the most recent and promising array-fed two-dimensional (2-D) LWAs, selecting a couple of the most significant structures in application, namely Fabry–Perot cavity antennas and bull's-eye antennas, and discussing some of their recently proposed advanced features. 7. Method-of-Moments Solver for All-Metal Corrugated Structures: Leaky-Mode Analysis and Open-Stopband Suppression

Abstract

A method-of-moments (MoMs) approach is proposed for the modal analysis of two-dimensional (2-D) all-metal leaky-wave structures periodic along one direction. The electric-field integral equations (EFIEs) for both TM and TE polarizations are formulated in the unit cell (UC) by employing a rapidly convergent Ewald representation for the relevant 2-D periodic Green’s function. The integral equations are discretized using triangular subsectional basis functions and a Galerkin testing scheme. Effective modal dispersive analyses are developed for a variety of leaky-wave structures. Real proper (bound) modes, as well as complex proper (backward leaky) and improper (forward leaky) modes, are investigated. The proposed method allows for the accurate design and tuning of asymmetric UCs required to suppress the open stopband (OSB), which cannot be easily carried out by means of full-wave simulations with commercial software. Validations are provided through alternative methods and in all cases the presented formulation shows high accuracy and versatility.

28. Half-Annular Leaky-Wave Antenna With Suppressed Open Stopband: Design and Experimental Testing

Abstract

A new half-annular bull-eye leaky-wave antenna (LWA) design with suppressed open stopband (OSB) and integrated feeding is presented. The 2-D aperture offers a pencil beam with scanning through broadside and with stable gain values as a function of frequency. To achieve directional radiation, a TM$_{0}$ surface wave supported by a grounded dielectric slab is properly perturbed by means of a suitable planar-periodic double-strip aperture. In addition, the proposed structure offers improved performance and reduced design complexity with respect to previous LWAs having a nonsuppressed OSB. Dispersion analyses based on a well-established method-of-moments approach are also performed to characterize the fast spatial harmonic supported by the structure and to determine the size, position, and periodicity of the strips needed for optimal OSB suppression. Simulations and experiments have been carried out to validate the antenna performance against the optimized unit cell. The fabricated planar-periodic LWA also provides continuous beam scanning from $-35^{\circ }$ to $40^{\circ }$, with a peak realized gain of 21 dBi.
