1. Performance Analysis of Smart Grid Communication Networks Using Co-Simulation

Abstract

The power system network is moving towards a smarter grid with increasing deployment of distributed generators, and prosumers, embedded with distributed control. An evolving active distribution network will require a distribution system operator (DSO) which will utilize information and communication technology to perform optimization and control of distributed energy resources (DERs). There are two major challenges in performing simulation and analysis of a distribution system. The first one is the detailed modelling and integration of a large number of distributed generators and the second one is the integration of communication and power layers in real-time simulation. In this paper, a co-simulation framework is proposed, which facilitates the performance monitoring of both layers simultaneously. A CIGRE benchmark system is used to investigate the performance of the communication layer along with the detailed modelling of distributed generators. A network topology with different network scenarios is used to analyze the impact of the network performance. This analysis helps in determining network scenarios for the optimal operation of the distribution system. The simulation study has utilized Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS), Typhoon, and OpalRT real-time simulators for the power layer, and NetSim for designing a communication layer between all the simulators and emulating the actual communication.

Abstract

COMPS Superscalar (COMPSs) és un model de programació per aplicacions distribuïdes desenvolupat al Barcelona Supercomputing Center que explota el paral·lelisme inherent de les aplicacions. En l'actualitat depèn d'una capa de comunicació externa obsoleta que en limita el seu rendiment. El projecte té com a principal objectiu en el disseny i desenvolupament de la dita capa de comunicació per poder aplicacions que facin servir diversos supercomputadors. Aquest complement al programa COMPSs utilitzarà el protocol SSH per realitzar la comunicació de forma segura amb els supercomputadors., COMPS Superscalar (COMPSs) is a programming framework for distributed Applications developed by Barcelona Supercomputing center, which exploits the inherent parallelism of applications. Nowadays, it relies on an obsolete communication layer that limits its performance. The main objective of the project is the design and development of said communication layer to be able to create applications that use several supercomputers. This add-on to the COMPSs program uses the SSH protocol to securely communicate with supercomputers.

Abstract

Cooperative vehicular cyber physical systems build a group of entities that can accomplish a cooperative task using the distributed control approaches. To this end, such a cooperative task can be coordinated and managed by a distributed control plane that will be able to encapsulate all the required functionality in a layered architecture providing the required interoperability. Here, the authors propose such a distributed control plane that consists of the cooperative awareness layer, the communication layer and the distributed control layer. Wireless communications play an important role for the mobility provision, taking into account different constraints in order to provide high reliability and low latency. A simulation environment is considered with a leader–follower control format, where the reliability is evaluated. Further, a distributed safety monitoring approach is devised, given a control diagram and mapping of the events to the different components. The event monitoring relies on the self-triggered approach, where a use case is evaluated to highlight the impact of the input and output delays to the model predictive control component of the overall distributed control diagram including the calculation of the number of triggered events.

Abstract

Recent technological developments in the construction industry are seeking to create smart cities by using Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) to enhance information models such as BIM. Currently, BIM models are commonly adopted to work with IoT-based systems and embrace smart technologies that offer interoperability in the communication layer. In future, it is envisioned that digital twins will provide new possibilities for cyber-physical systems via monitoring and simulation. However, rarely in this rapidly developing field is security fully considered. This paper reviews the relevant literature regarding the use of the IoT in the built environment and analyses current practices. It also presents examples of cities that use the IoT to improve construction and the lived experience. Finally, it reviews how digital twins factor in multiple layers defined in CPSs, from physical objects to information models. Based on this review, recommendations are provided documenting how BIM specifications can be expanded to become IoT compliant, enhancing standards to support cybersecurity, and ensuring digital twin and city standards can be fully integrated in future secure smart cities.
