Recent studies on language acquisition and motivation have targeted Japanese language learners in a formal educational context, with less attention paid to learners who study Japanese informally. The current study aims to investigate the impact of Japanese animations in the context of informal third language acquisition. It targets the native speakers of Arabic who are interested in learning Japanese as a third language (L3), and investigates the motivations of Arab teenagers and young adults to learn Japanese. Further, the paper also focuses on examining aspects of Japanese language proficiency among teenagers and young adults, including vocabulary enhancement and grammar competence. The methodology used in the current study is twofold: an online survey questionnaire adopted from Armour and Iida (2016), followed by an engaging experiment in which participants were divided into two groups (reality anime group vs. action anime group) in order to examine the effectiveness of anime selection in boosting proficiency level. The findings of the online survey indicate that Arabic native speakers are highly motivated to learn Japanese, while the experiment results confirm that the type of anime and consistency of exposure do support the acquisition process. Further, the study concluded that consumption of anime series contributes to the learning process and facilitates learners' proficiency in general and vocabulary learning in particular. However, it remains unknown whether or not Arabic native speakers' motivations lead to their enrollment into formal Japanese foreign language education. Avenues for future research and implications are also presented toward the end of the paper.

Sub-Saharan Africa secondary school science curricula recognise language as the most important communication tool for learners' biology learning outcomes. Despite this prominent goal, learners' scientific literacy at secondary school appears to be insufficient to cope with classroom teaching and learning of biology. This paper presents a review of literature regarding the way English as the language of instruction and inquiry-based learning strategies affect biology learning in Sub-Saharan Africa secondary schools. The scope of the review included journal articles, books and book chapters published in the period from 2005 to 2020 on the English language of instruction in biology education in Sub-Saharan Africa. We established criteria for first article searches indexed in Scopus, African Journals Online, the Education Resources Information Center, Web of Science and Psych Info as recognised index systems for science education. We considered studies related to the understanding of learners' language backgrounds, language-in-education policy and pedagogical language strategies (practice) that mediate learning. In this case, 53 studies were identified after removing redundancies; 27 studies satisfied the inclusion criteria when screened by key words and abstract and reviewed for eligibility; and only nine were selected after evaluating the full texts. The review analysis suggests that there is a gap in the corpus of literature on what and how pedagogical language strategies should be utilised to support meaningful learning of biology in multilingual settings. Poor learners' academic achievement and conceptual engagement in biology at secondary school level were the main effects reported by the reviewed literature. Less is still known about the effect of the use of inquiry-based learning strategies on learners' conceptual engagement in multilingual biology classrooms. We recommend formulating a clear policy articulation on the use of bilingual instructions in teaching and learning of biology at the secondary school level; assessing teacher and learner performance over pedagogical language strategies; and evaluating the contribution of IBL strategies in addressing language barriers in biology learning for higher order thinking skills in Sub-Saharan Africa secondary schools.

Four databases were searched to identify studies published by Arab researchers on parents' perceptions of autism spectrum disorder and studies conducted by US researchers and published in systematic reviews of this topic. The electronic search resulted in 14 studies published by Arab researchers and 55 studies published by US researchers. The results showed that autism spectrum disorder has many of the same effects on Arab and American families. Six major areas were identified in the results. Financial difficulties associated with raising children with autism spectrum disorder were mentioned more in Arab studies than in US studies. Arab studies had more emphasis on gender than US studies. The results related to quality of life of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder in Arab studies were equivocal. US studies included comparisons with families without a child with autism spectrum disorder, and addressed factors that were associated with quality of life indicators. More health, educational, and social services were available in United States than in Arab countries, but some frustration was reported by US parents in obtaining appropriate services in some studies. A higher percentage of Arab studies mentioned the role of religious faith than US studies. Finally, social stigma was evidenced in both cultures, but not much research was available.

This article aims at introducing the research on social work practice in Egypt and the Arab World as a thematic topic. It has started with the essence of the current Arab World and its definition. Social work practice and models of social work intervention in this specific region have been described in terms of its specific and topographic nature. Three main contributors and players to research on social work practice have been included namely social work practitioners, academic social work researchers, and doctoral dissertations granted by Western universities to Arabs. The discussions and implications to research on social work practice in Egypt and the Arab World have been addressed.

Labour productivity in Arab countries is low by international standards and this problem occurs in Arab countries both inside and outside Africa. There are 10 Arab countries in Africa: Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, Sudan, Somalia, Djibouti and Comoros. Enhancing labour productivity is a major challenge for Arab countries. Improving labour productivity should increase competitiveness, economic growth, job availability and living standards. Key factors in low Arab labour productivity include weak education and training systems, a mismatch between training outputs and labour market demands, lack of technology and innovation and poor management of the workforce. This article seeks to put forward innovative education and training policies which can enhance labour productivity. It does so after examining Arab education and training systems and their links with industry. It is concluded that modern governance arrangements need to be applied in Arab universities. Universities need to be re-envisioned so that curricula are market-driven and bridge the gap between education supply and market demand. Entrepreneurial teaching and learning practices need to be emphasized and improved technical and vocational training should be a priority. The Arab countries also have to adopt responsive and practical strategies for research and development and link the research and development institutes to industry.

This article proposes a conceptual framework for how education can promote adolescent girls' empowerment and, by mapping the field, highlights promising examples of empowering education programs. We conclude by identifying both research and programmatic opportunities for the future that will harness the expertise of a range of specialists from the interdisciplinary fields of gender studies and adolescent development in collaboration with experts from the fields of education, health, and labor.

Arab countries have undertaken various measures to develop special education programmes and services over the last three decades; nevertheless, major challenges remain regarding the expansion of these programmes and services and improving their quality. "This article provides an update on disability and special education in Arab countries". Reflections on the historical development of special education in Arab societies are briefly presented. Major challenges currently faced by Arab countries in the field of special education are described, and some recommendations for action are offered.

Compared Comorian and Algerian 10- and 11-year-old immigrants' attitudes toward school, friendship nominations, and friendship quality. Found that ethnic origin was a factor in choosing friends; positive friendship quality associated with better attitudes toward school; and in-group friendships were more common and of higher quality than those with out-group friends. Climate change in developing nations has become a severe obstacle to extensive land productivity. Farmer's resilience to climate change impact can be boosted via adaptation measures. Smallholder farmers' expertise, however, can be fragmented and inconsistent, especially in times of climatic stress. It is worth mentioning that social networks play a part in how farmers decide how to adapt. Formal and informal social ties are the categories we use to categorize social networks. Using primary data obtained from banana growers on the island of Ngazidja in the Comoros archipelago, this study need to analyze the variable effects of social ties on farmers' adaptation decisions and further assess the impact of adaptation strategies on land productivity under climate change. According to the findings, less than 32% of banana growers used adaptation measures to lessen the effects of climate change on agricultural practices. Banana producers favored replanting trees, boosting sucker reduction, improving irrigation, and mixing crops. Farmers applied adaptation tactics at a higher rate when they were members of agricultural cooperatives and connected to sellers of agricultural inputs. The connection to local farmers, on the other hand, prevented farmers from taking proactive measures to counteract climate change. We also revealed that banana producers' land production increased dramatically due to adaptation measures. These results illustrate the significance of smallholder farmers' various social connections when formulating a policy package to improve land productivity and increase their responses to climate change. Background The diagnostic criteria for lateral lymph node metastasis in rectal cancer have not been established. This research aimed to investigate the risk factors for lateral lymph node metastasis and develop machine learning models combining these risk factors to improve the diagnostic performance of standard imaging. Method This multicentre prospective study included patients who underwent lateral lymph node dissection without preoperative treatment for rectal cancer between 2017 and 2019 in 15 Japanese institutions. First, preoperative clinicopathological factors and magnetic resonance imaging findings were evaluated using multivariable analyses for their correlation with lateral lymph node metastasis. Next, machine learning diagnostic models for lateral lymph node metastasis were developed combining these risk factors. The models were tested in a training set and in an internal validation cohort and their diagnostic performance was tested using receiver operating characteristic curve analyses. Results Of 212 rectal cancers, 122 patients were selected, including 232 lateral pelvic sides, 30 sides of which had pathological lateral lymph node metastasis. Multivariable analysis revealed that poorly differentiated/mucinous adenocarcinoma, extramural vascular invasion, tumour deposit and a short-axis diameter of lateral lymph node ≥ 6.0 mm were independent risk factors for lateral lymph node metastasis. Patients were randomly divided into a training cohort (139 sides) and a test cohort (93 sides) and machine learning models were computed on the basis of a combination of significant features (including: histological type, extramural vascular invasion, tumour deposit, short- and long-axis diameter of lateral lymph node, body mass index, serum carcinoembryonic antigen level, cT, cN, cM, irregular border and mixed signal intensity). The top three models with the highest sensitivity in the training cohort were as follows: support vector machine (sensitivity, 1.000; specificity, 0.773), light gradient boosting machine (sensitivity, 0.950; specificity, 0.918) and ensemble learning (sensitivity, 0.950; specificity, 0.917). The diagnostic performances of these models in the test cohort were as follows: support vector machine (sensitivity, 0.750; specificity, 0.667), light gradient boosting machine (sensitivity, 0.500; specificity, 0.852) and ensemble learning (sensitivity, 0.667; specificity, 0.864). Background: Though women in sub-Saharan Africa have increased risk of intimate sexual violence, research on the association between sexual autonomy and intimate partner violence among this population has not received the requisite attention. Consequently, we investigated if sexual autonomy is a protective factor against intimate partner violence among women in sub-Saharan Africa. Methods: Secondary data analysis was conducted based on the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHSs) of 27 sub-Saharan African countries from 2008 to 2021. A total of 104,523 married or cohabitating women were included in the study. We applied a multilevel Poisson regression model with robust variance to identify associated factors. Variables with a p-value<0.2 in the bi-variable multilevel Poisson regression analysis were considered for the multivariable analysis. The Adjusted Prevalence Ratio (APR) with its 95% confidence interval (CI) was reported, and variables with a p-value <0.05 were included in the multivariable analysis. Results: The prevalence of intimate partner violence and sexual autonomy among women in SSA were 32.96% [95% CI: 32.68%, 33.25%] and 88.79% [95% CI: 88.59%, 88.97%], respectively. Women in Sierra Leone had the highest prevalence of IPV (52.71%) while Comoros had the lowest prevalence of IPV (8.09%). The prevalence of sexual autonomy was highest in Namibia (99.22%) and lowest in Mali (61.83%). The MOR value in the null model was 1.26. We found that women who had sexual autonomy are 1.28 times [APR = 1.28, 95% CI: 1.17, 1.40] more likely to experience IPV than women who had no sexual autonomy. Conclusion: This study has demonstrated that sexual autonomy is significantly associated with intimate partner violence, however, it does not necessarily act as a protective factor. The study suggests the need for more education on intimate partner violence targeting women's partners. This can help secure the commitment of the perpetrators to rather become proponents of anti-intimate partner violence and further offer women the necessary support for them to attain their full fundamental rights in all spheres of life. In 2017, Ali Zamir's acclaimed debut novel Anguille sous roche became the first Comorian novel to circulate in translation in Europe. This article discusses its English translation, A Girl Called Eel, by Aneesa Abbas Higgins (2019) in relation to the reception, circulation, and canon formation of literature from the Comoros islands. By discussing translation's ties to heritage conservation and literary consecration in the Comorian context alongside a comparative textual and paratextual analysis of Anguille and Eel, I investigate the extent to which the novel's 'Comorianness' was erased, reclaimed, or playfully constructed along this translation journey by a wide variety of actors. These include the independent publishers Le Tripode and Jacaranda Books, who respectively published the French and English texts, various French literary institutions and French and UK-based funding bodies, as well as the author and translator themselves. Octopus fisheries face heightened demand driven by depleted fish stocks and escalating economic value, leading to overextraction of octopus populations and magnifying threats to coastal ecosystems and the livelihoods of fishers who depend on them. Implementation of management strategies such as periodic fishing closures can offer sanctuary for octopus, providing the necessary space and time for the growth and reproduction of this rapidly proliferating species. Despite evidence of positive management outcomes, the role of periodic closures in the long-term sustainability of octopus populations remains uncertain. Here, we examine trends in octopus landings over time and the effects of periodic closures along the Mozambique Channel from Comoros to Madagascar (12°-25°S). Long-term trends in octopus landings varied across three regions: generally stable over a 6-year period in Comoros, increasing over a 4-year period in the Barren Isles and declining over a 17-year period in Atsimo Andrefana, Madagascar. We observed a significant increase in mean catch per unit effort (CPUE, kilograms/fisher-day), and mean total catch (kilograms/day) following periodic closures across villages extracting octopus from closure areas. When evaluating each region independently, we observed this positive effect across Comoros and Atsimo Andrefana, Madagascar while trends in the Barren Isles showed no effect of octopus closures. We applied generalized linear mixed models to examine the influence of 10 covariates on mean daily total catch and CPUE within 7 days and 30 days post-closure. Baseline conditions (quantified by the pre-closure CPUE and daily total catch), closure duration and start month of closure had positive, statistically significant correlations with post-closure CPUE and daily total catch. Additionally, closure duration from 13 to 16 weeks and closure size of approximately 70 hectares were qualitatively associated with net gains in CPUE. Although periodic closures yield positive outcomes for octopus fisheries, the effects may be short-lived, as observed in Atsimo Andrefana, Madagascar, where catch declined over the long-term despite temporary improvements. Introduction: The influence of Wolbachia on mosquito reproduction and vector competence has led to renewed interest in studying the genetic diversity of these bacteria and the phenotypes they induced in mosquito vectors. In this study, we focused on two species of Eretmapodites, namely Eretmapodites quinquevittatus and Eretmapodites subsimplicipes, from three islands in the Comoros archipelago (in the Southwestern Indian Ocean). Methods: Using the COI gene, we examined the mitochondrial genetic diversity of 879 Eretmapodites individuals from 54 sites. Additionally, we investigated the presence and genetic diversity of Wolbachia using the wsp marker and the diversity of five housekeeping genes commonly used for genotyping through Multiple Locus Sequence Typing (MLST). Results and discussion: Overall, Er. quinquevittatus was the most abundant species in the three surveyed islands and both mosquito species occurred in sympatry in most of the investigated sites. We detected a higher mitochondrial genetic diversity in Er. quinquevittatus with 35 reported haplotypes (N = 615 specimens, Hd = 0.481 and π = 0.002) while 13 haplotypes were found in Er. subsimplicipes (N = 205 specimens, Hd = 0.338 and π = 0.001), this difference is likely due to the bias in sampling size between the two species. We report for the first time the presence of Wolbachia in these two Eretmapodites species. The prevalence of Wolbachia infection varied significantly between species, with a low prevalence recorded in Er. quinquevittatus (0.8%, N = 5/627) while infection was close to fixation in Er. subsimplicipes (87.7%, N = 221/252). Both male and female individuals of the two mosquito species appeared to be infected. The analysis of MLST genes revealed the presence of two Wolbachia strains corresponding to two new strain types (STs) within the supergroups A and B, which have been named wEretA and wEretB. These strains were found as mono-infections and are closely related, phylogenetically, to Wolbachia strains previously reported in Drosophila species. Finally, we demonstrate that maternal transmission of Wolbachia is imperfect in Er. subsimplicipes, which could explain the presence of a minority of uninfected individuals in the field. The discovery of cyclonic and dipole eddies in the Mozambique Channel (MC) indicates that the understanding of the mesoscale eddy characteristics in the MC is incomplete. The distributions of anticyclonic, cyclonic, and dipole eddies along the MC were elucidated in this study using satellite observations. It was observed that these eddies exhibit a preference for emergence and movement in the western MC. The occurrence frequencies of anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies are four and three times per year, respectively, in the narrowest section of the MC. In contrast, the frequency of mesoscale eddies reaches its peak at nine times per year in the central region of the MC. The occurrence of dipole eddies also reaches its peak twice per year in the middle MC. Dipole eddies are more prevalent in the MC and exhibit larger dimensions and shorter lifespans compared to anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies. Mesoscale eddies, which traverse the narrowest section of the MC and propagate southward, are predominantly generated within the western Comoros Basin due to barotropic instability. The southward branch of the Northeast Madagascar Current (NEMC) plays a crucial role in transporting these eddies to the middle MC. The eastern middle MC is also a generation site for mesoscale eddies in addition to the Comoros Basin, where cyclonic eddies are generated twice per year. Livingstone's fruit bat (Pteropus livingstonii) is among the most threatened bats worldwide. As the species is an important pollinator and seed disperser of Comoros plants with a crucial role in forest regeneration, it is critical to understand how human-induced habitat disturbance impacts genetic structure at fine spatial scales in order to define conservation strategies. In this study, we assessed the level of genetic structure between eight colonies of the species and found that this was strong genetic structures between roosts that can be explained by isolation due both to distance and habitat fragmentation. The labour market is fundamental for economic growth, which makes an in‐depth understanding of its dynamics crucial for development and poverty reduction. One determinant of labour market outcomes are remittances. Remittances can influence the decision of an individual whether to participate in the labour market or not, which makes it necessary to understand this relation. In this study we assessed the impact of remittances on the labour supply in the Comoros, the second largest recipient of remittances as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Africa, by using propensity score matching and national household surveys for 2014 and 2020 to estimate how remittances influenced the decision to participate in the labour market. Most of our results are statistically insignificant; that is, individuals receiving remittances were as likely to participate in the labour market as non‐receivers. Remittances did not influence the unemployment rate and the number of hours worked. On the other side, we found that the type of work was influenced overall by remittances with remittances receivers being more likely to engage in informal work, being more likely to be self‐employed and finally being less likely to engage in wage work. We further find some heterogeneity across the origin and the amount of received remittances. Foreign remittances can explain better the few significant results than domestic remittances and high remittances receivers influenced the labour participation rate, while low and medium remittances receivers explain better the impact of remittances on hours worked, self‐employment and wage work. Swedish merchant C.H. Braad’s illustrated description in 1750 of the rulers, people, crops, livestock and wildlife of ‘Johanna’ (Anjouan/Nzwani) in the Comoros is translated, with extensive annotations, from part of his manuscript account of a voyage to India on the Götha Leijon.

A 29-year-old man from Comoros presented with rapidly progressive paraplegia and sexual dysfunction. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a contrast-enhanced conus medullaris lesion. Differential diagnoses included tumors, abscesses, and inflammatory diseases. Neurosurgery was delayed to complete examinations. Cerebral MRI showed three abscesses. Body computed tomography scan showed supracentimetric polyadenopathies, pulmonary nodules, prostatic lesion, and enhanced seminal vesicle, with hypermetabolism on positron emission tomography with 2-deoxy-2-[fluorine-18]fluoro-D-glucose scan. Histology of lymph node biopsy showed granulomatous infiltration without acid-fast bacilli, and positive polymerase chain reaction for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Lymph node culture was positive after 2 months, urine culture after 3 weeks, but cerebrospinal fluid and sputum cultures were negative. A 1-year antituberculosis therapy was initiated, associated with corticosteroids because the patient developed tuberculosis-immune reconstitution syndrome, revealed by the recurrence of neurological symptoms. After 2 months the patient completely recovered and could run. MRI showed stability of the voluminous tuberculoma with decrease of medullary edema. Avoiding surgery in those cases may prevent iatrogenic neurological deterioration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses a case of fulminant hepatitis A in a traveler who visited friends and relatives in Comoros. The prevalence of hepatitis A virus (HAV) is high in developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian subcontinent. In developed countries, the incidence of HAV has decreased due to improved sanitation, resulting in most adults being susceptible to the virus. The patient in this case had a history of various health conditions and was not vaccinated against HAV. The article emphasizes the importance of testing individuals from HAV hyperendemic areas for HAV IgG before traveling to at-risk countries and vaccinating them if they are non-immunized.
