Compression garments, utilized in sports and exercise for performance enhancement and recovery, lack sufficient well-controlled studies to overcome any potential placebo effect. Therefore, we tested whether wearing compressive pantyhose (CP) during the Ballet-specific aerobic fitness test (BAFT) would influence performance, recovery, physiological, and perceptual indicators. Additionally, this pilot study tested the feasibility of the research procedures and informed adjustments for the main study. Nine young classical ballerinas attended two sessions on different days: a) wearing CP (pressure of 20-30 mmHg) or b) wearing a placebo pantyhose ([PLA] no compression, containing an illusory effect) during the BAFT. We assessed heart rate (HR) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) during the BAFT, perceived recovery (PRS), lower-limb delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) at Pre and 24 h Post, and standing heel-rise test performance at Pre, 30 min, and 24 h Post. No variables differed (p>0.05) between CP and PLA (e.g., HR mean over 5 BAFT phases: 178±14 bpm vs. 179±17 bpm, p=0.63; RPE 30 min post: 9.1±0.8 vs. 9.1±0.8 arbitrary units, p=0.94). However, wearing CP promoted attenuation in acute fatigue, while PLA showed a performance decrement (p<0.05) 30 min Post in the standing heel-rise test: CP 30.2±6.0 to 22.8±7.5 repetitions and PLA 36.2±11.7 to 22.9±6.3 repetitions. We conclude that CP may mitigate acute fatigue in the triceps surae muscle of amateur classical ballet dancers, making it relevant for their acute recovery, particularly in cases involving multiple daily performances. Previous research has demonstrated that postural stability may be improved by increasing stimulation to the somatosensory system. Wearing lower limb compression garments or textured in-soles have been found to be effective short-term methods for improving postural stability, hypothesized to be due to enhanced tactile feedback. The aim of this study was to assess whether a combined compression-tactile sock increases postural stability in healthy adults, compared to barefoot. Participants completed a sensory organization test (SOT) to assess postural stability under two conditions: (a) barefoot, and (b) wearing a compression sock with a textured inner lining (small rubber nodules on the skin side of the sole). SOT composite scores and three sensory scores - somatosensory, vestibular, visual - were assessed between the two conditions to identify whether wearing the socks was associated with enhanced postural stability. Comparisons between the two conditions were analyzed via a paired t -test for the (i) entire group, and an ANOVA when the group was split into (ii) "high performers" and "low performers", according to their baseline performance on the SOT. Fifty-four participants (28 females, 26 males, mean age 40 ± 14 years) completed the study. SOT scores were not different between the compression-tactile sock and barefoot conditions when analyzed as an entire group (p > 0.0125), or when the group was split into performance groups (p > 0.0125). These findings demonstrate that, for healthy adults, mixed compression and tactile stimulation socks do not appear to be associated with improved postural stability, when measured using the sensory organization test. Although prior research indicates that wearing a compression-tactile sock improves somatosensory acuity compared to being barefoot, these benefits do not seem to carry over to postural stability. Stress relaxation will create interference in the performance of textiles in applications such as compression garments, pressure bandages, and varicose stockings in which keeping a definite level of pressure on the scar area is vital. Therefore, considering the effectual parameters on the stress relaxation of the fabrics will help to produce appropriate functional clothes. In this research, rib-knitted fabrics with different numbers of tuck stitches in successive wales have been fabricated and their stress relaxation has been surveyed. According to the findings, in all fabric structures, stress relaxation is higher in the wale direction compared to the course direction. In both directions, the stress relaxation linearly changes with the number of tuck stitches in the fabric structure. By increasing the number of tuck stitches, the stress relaxation of the fabric increases from 43% to 81% in the course direction whilst decreasing from 47% to 82% in the wale direction. Consequently, utilization of the tuck stitch in the structure of pressure bandages enhances their functionality, whilst diminishing the performance of compression garments and varicose stockings. Purpose: The few previous researches on the impact of calf compression garments (CG) on running performance while assessing physiological and perceptual factors. Therefore, this study investigated how the clothing pressure of two types of Calf CG, CG1 and CG2, affects muscle fatigue and activation during running. Design/methodology/approach: Five healthy amateur runners(three female and two male)were recruited for a 30-min running trial. They wear a Calf CG on their right leg (CG group), but not on their left leg(CON group). After obtaining the clothing pressure of Calf CG on the gastrocnemius lateral head (GL), gastrocnemius medial head (GM) and tibialis anterior(TA) of the right leg, surface electromyography (sEMG)of four muscles of GL, GM, TA and rectus femoris (RF) of the left and right legs were measured during running, and heart rate, cardiopulmonary rate, and human RPE were also measured. Blood bleed oxygen before and after the running trial were measured. The root mean square (RMS) of the characteristic values was selected as an index for the analysis of sEMG signals, and the data were analyzed using statistical and computational methods. Findings: The results showed that the indexes of heart rate, blood oxygen, and RPE were significantly increased, indicating that the subjects had reached the fatigue level. The comparison of mean clothing pressure at GL, GM and TA locations reveals that the TA location consistently exhibits the highest pressure for both types of CG. When wearing CG1, the mean clothing pressure at the GL and GM test points is greater than that of CG2(CG1-GL = 0.2059 kPa > CG2-GL = 0.148 kPa; CG1-GM = 0.1633 kPa > CG2-GM = 0.127 kPa). This is attributed to the double-layered fabric on the sides of CG1, which precisely covers the GL and GM areas, thereby resulting in higher mean clothing pressure at these locations compared to CG2. Conversely, the mean clothing pressure at the TA location for CG1 is lower than that for CG2(CG1-TA = 0.3852 kPa < CG2-TA = 0.426 kPa). The pressure exerted by the CG1 on the lower limb test areas has both positive and negative effects, though neither are statistically significant. The pressure exerted by CG2 alleviates fatigue at the directly affected locations GL and GM, but exerts excessive pressure on TA, resulting in a negative effect. Additionally, CG2 pressure alleviates fatigue at the indirectly affected location RF on the same side. Based on the specific clothing pressure data, it is concluded that when the pressure at the GM location is 0.127 kPa, 30 min of running has a fatigue-relieving effect. However, the pressure should not be excessively high, at 0.1633 kPa it exhibits an insignificant adverse effect. At the TA location, a garment pressure mean between 0.3852 and 0.426 kPa does not alleviate fatigue after 30 min of running, and the negative effect becomes more pronounced as the pressure increases. The pressure exerted by the CG at GL, GM, TA and RF locations shows significant changes from the previous time period during the 15–18 min interval after running. Therefore, in the design of CG, attention should be paid to the changes in clothing pressure effects on muscles during this specific time period. Compression garments have gained popularity in the sports world as a means to enhance athletic performance and accelerate recovery. This study investigates the effectiveness of upper-body compression garments and their impact on the rate of perceived exertion (RPE) during maximal isometric contractions. Eight adult males, students of a Master's degree program in Sports Sciences, participated in the study, conducting tests in controlled conditions at the University of Salerno. The subjects performed maximal isometric contractions in three separate sessions, wearing compression garments (CG), traditional sportswear (noCG), and a tight-fitting garment without compression effect, to minimize the placebo effect (Placebo), respectively. Perceived exertion was assessed using the modified CR-10 scale. Statistical analysis revealed a significant reduction in RPE when athletes wore compression garments compared to other conditions, suggesting a benefit in the use of such clothing. The findings indicate that compression garments can attenuate the perception of exertion during intense physical activities, with potential implications for performance, comfort, and recovery. This study contributes to the existing literature by expanding the understanding of the effects of compression clothing and highlighting the importance of further research to optimize the use of these garments in enhancing athletic performance. Ankle somatosensation appears to be negatively affected when in simulated hypogravity (gravity, 1 > g < 0). Developing countermeasures to reduce this negative effect is necessary for sensorimotor control as astronauts prepare to explore the Moon. Head-elevated supine lying has been found to be an effective method in simulating the physiological impact of hypogravity by reducing the weight-bearing capacity through the lower limbs. This study investigated whether wearing a combined compression sock with plantar textured sole (compression-tactile sock) is associated with enhanced somatosensory acuity of the lower limbs in a simulated hypogravity environment. Ankle somatosensory acuity was assessed on 55 healthy participants between the ages of 18 and 65 years (female subjects 28, male subjects 27; mean age 41 years ±14). The active movement extent discrimination assessment (AMEDA) was used to assess somatosensory acuity on participants’ non-dominant foot under four conditions: (1) upright standing in barefoot; (2) upright standing wearing compression-tactile socks; (3) simulated hypogravity (head-elevated supine position) in barefoot; and (4) simulated hypogravity (head-elevated supine position) wearing compression-tactile socks. Analysis was conducted for (i) the whole participant group, (ii) high (above-average) performers, (iii) medium (average) performers, and (iv) low (below average) performers. It was hypothesized that low performers would experience the greatest gains when wearing the sock, compared to those in barefoot. When assessing the group as a whole, AMEDA scores were significantly reduced in the simulated hypogravity (head-elevated supine) conditions when compared to upright standing conditions (p < 0.001; 3% decline when barefoot; 2.9% decline when wearing the socks). Wearing compression-tactile socks had no effect on AMEDA scores when compared to barefoot (p = 0.173). When analyzed by the performance group, somatosensory acuity was enhanced in the compression-tactile sock condition, when compared to barefoot (upright, p = 0.009, 4.7% increase; head-elevated supine, p = 0.022, 3% increase) in the low performers only. In the medium and high-performer groups, there was no difference between the compression-tactile sock conditions and barefoot conditions (p > 0.05 for all). Compression-tactile socks may be associated with enhanced somatosensory acuity in upright standing and simulated hypogravity for individuals with below-average somatosensory acuity. Further research is warranted to assess the effect of compression-tactile socks in an actual hypogravity environment to determine whether the compression-tactile socks can maintain one’s somatosensory acuity.

Introduction: It is commonly believed that using abdominal binders or compression garments (CGs) after an abdominoplasty could encourage fluid to drain, which would prevent fluid from building up at the surgical site and reduce the risk of seroma and other similar problems. Objective: To evaluate the effect of the use of abdominal binders or CG on the post-operative outcomes following abdominoplasty. Design: Systematic review Method: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines were followed to select relevant studies from 2004 to 2024. Data from the included studies were extracted to assess the quality and risk of bias using a modified Jadaad score. Main outcome: Post-operative seroma formation Secondary outcome: Ventilatory function, intra-abdominal pressure (IAP), and subcutaneous edema were the outcomes of interest. Results: Only 5 trials totaling 130 patients were included in this review. Utilizing post-operative CG following abdominoplasty showed a non-significant tendency to decrease seroma development, ventilatory function, and subcutaneous edema. The limited evidence available also suggested that using post-operative CG increases IAP. Conclusion: Weak evidence supports the beneficial use of abdominal binders following abdominoplasty. Limitations: Low-quality scientific evidence available from the scant data and low caliber of the literature support the use of CG post-abdominoplasty. Therefore, unified outcome reporting and rigid randomized clinical trials are necessary to obtain valid data.

A pressure of approximately 15–25 mmHg is used for effective compression therapy to prevent and treat hypertrophic scar formation in patients with burns. However, conventional facial compression garments present challenges owing to inadequate pressure distribution in curved areas such as the cheeks, around the mouth, and the slope of the nose. This study aimed to evaluate the utility of a custom-made 3D compression mask equipped with pressure sensors to treat facial burn scars. This single-blinded, prospective randomized controlled trial was conducted between May and October 2023, involving 48 burn scars in 12 inpatients with facial burns. We created the custom-made 3D compression mask equipped with pressure sensors, inner lined with biocompatible silicon, and a harness system using 3D printing technology, which can continuously monitor whether an appropriate pressure of 15–25 mmHg maintains. The biological scar properties, Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS), and Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS) scores in patients with facial burns were assessed before applying the compression mask and garment and at 4 and 12 weeks after application. Pre-application assessment of biological scar properties, VSS, and POSAS revealed no statistically significant differences between the 3D mask and control groups (p > 0.05 for all). Throughout the 12-week application, skin hydration and scar thickness significantly increased (p < 0.001) and reduced (p = 0.010), respectively , in the 3D mask group compared to the control group. Additionally, significant improvements in scar pliability (p = 0.004) and height (p = 0.009) of VSS, itching (p = 0.047), scar stiffness (p = 0.001), thickness (p = 0.011), and irregularity (p < 0.001) of POSAS-patient component, and scar thickness (p = 0.001), pliability (p = 0.012), and surface area (p = 0.027) of the POSAS-observer component were observed in 3D mask group throughout the 12-week application compared to the control group. The customized 3D compression mask equipped with pressure sensors significantly improved scar thickness, skin hydration, and various assessment scale parameters throughout the 12-week application. • Customized 3D compression mask maintains a pressure of approximately 15–25 mmHg. • Real-time pressure feedback aids scar management. • More improved facial scar thickness and skin hydration in the 3D mask group. • 3D compression masks were more effective than conventional compression garment. This study aims at examining the effect of structural and process variables on thermal comfort properties of the compression garments produced with single-jersey weft knitted construction. The considered variables are elastane yarn count, elastane yarn tension during yarn positive feeding, reduction factor and fabric structure. To this end, 18 samples are manufactured according to Taguchi orthogonal array on a circular knitting machine. Heat transfer per cent, moisture transfer in the liquid phase and air permeability of the knitted fabrics have been measured and reported. The compression garments are sewn in cylindrical shape and the pressure applied on a cylinder is also measured by Kikuhime pressure sensor. The results demonstrate that the samples containing knit and miss stitches apply the highest amount of pressure and the sample having more tuck stitches represents the lowest pressure. Also, increasing the linear density of the elastic yarn and using a higher reduction factor provide a higher pressure. The results indicate that fabrics exerting greater pressure on the body have a tighter structure when stretched. Therefore, they show less air permeability, heat and moisture transfer. Also, for a certain fabric structure, an increase in reduction factor leads to open structure and creating more pressure. Consequently, air permeability and the heat and moisture transfer are increased. Samples which apply less pressure, are more permeable and transfer greater amount of heat, and moisture through their structure due to creation of an open structure in extended state. This study aims to assess the influence of lower body compression tights on performance in the Running-Based Anaerobic Sprint Test (RAST) in young male basketball players. Twenty male basketball players participated in the study (age = 16.5±0.5 years, height = 176.8±5.71 cm, weight = 68.5±8.98 kg, basketball experience = 2.35±0.49 years). Players performed the RAST, comprising 6 x 35 m sprints with 10-second intervals, wearing regular shorts or compression tights, with a one-week interval between conditions. Before each test, a 24-hour dietary record was used to calculate the total calorie intake and the percentage of calories from carbohydrates to account for dietary variations. The Hooper Index was used to assess fatigue levels before each test. The RAST, conducted using a Newtest Powertimer photocell (300 Series, Oulu, Finland), determined maximal power (Pmax), minimum power (Pmin), average power (AP), and fatigue index (FI). Perceived exertion after each RAST was assessed using the Borg Scale (20-point system). Paired-samples ttest results showed no statistically significant difference (p>0.05) between the means from the two test sessions. The study suggests that lower body compression tights did not significantly impact RAST performance in young basketball players. Purpose: Genital lymphedema is a chronic debilitating condition associated with highly impaired health-related quality of life (QoL). This prospective multicenter study evaluated the use of a new compressive garment in patients with secondary and primary genital lymphedema. Methods: Thirty-two patients prospectively enrolled were advised to wear the compressive garment for 12 weeks (day and night). The primary endpoint was change in patient-reported QoL at 12 weeks via the patient global impression of change (PGI-C) instrument. Secondary outcomes included change in other QoL measures at 12 weeks (visual analog scale, Lymphedema Quality of Life Inventory [LyQLI], and EQ-5D questionnaires), lymphedema severity (genital lymphedema score [GLS]), and physician assessment (Clinical Global Impression–Improvement [CGI-I]). Safety and tolerability were also assessed. Results: After 12 weeks, improvement was reported in 78.6% of patients (PGI-C). Physician assessment (CGI-I) indicated clinical improvement in 82.8% of patients. Patient assessment of lymphedema symptoms showed a significant decrease in discomfort (p = 0.02) and swelling (p = 0.01). Significant declines in the mean global GLS (p < 0.0001), and in the proportion of patients reporting heaviness, tightness, swelling, or urinary dysfunction (p < 0.05 for all), were also observed. LyQLI scores decreased (indicating improved QoL) in each of the physical, psychosocial (p = 0.05), and practical domains. The compressive garment was well tolerated with high compliance, and adverse events (due to swelling or discomfort) led to permanent discontinuation in only three patients. Objective: To evaluate the clinical performance, quality of life (QoL) and patient satisfaction with an innovative flat-knit compression garment for the daytime treatment of lymphoedema patients in daily routine. Method: In a prospective multicentre observational study, patients with leg or arm lymphoedema (stage I-II, International Society of Lymphology (ISL) standards, 2016) received a made-to-measure flat-knit compression class 2 JOBST Confidence (BSN-JOBST GmbH, Germany) thigh-high stocking or arm sleeve. Primary endpoint was the oedema status as determined by the mean sum of the circumferences at the beginning and the end of the wearing period. Secondary endpoints included QoL-related parameters and patient satisfaction with product features assessed through questionnaires. The observation period lasted three weeks. Results: A total of 97 patients (87 females, 10 males), of which 65 had leg lymphoedema and 32 had arm lymphoedema, received the study device. The oedema status was effectively maintained (slight reduction in mean sum of circumferences by –3.1±7.3cm; p=0.0001). For QoL-related parameters, the patients reported fewer limitations in work, leisure and psychological wellbeing after wearing the stocking or arm sleeve (all p-values <0.0001). They also experienced less limitations in function and movement, feeling of tension and heaviness, and fewer difficulties wearing clothes, shoes, jewellery or watches at study end (all p-values <0.0001). In terms of pleasant feeling on the skin, moisture management, softness of material, range of motion, overall wearing comfort and heat build-up under the garment, patients were more satisfied with the tested compression garment than with previously worn compression garments (all p-values <0.001). Conclusion: In this study, the tested innovative compression product increased patient satisfaction with the improved product features while the lymphoedema status was successfully maintained. The utilization of compression garments (CGs) has demonstrated the potential to improve athletic performance; however, the specific mechanisms underlying this enhancement remain a subject of further investigation. This study aimed to examine the impact of CGs on running mechanics and muscle synergies from a neuromuscular control perspective. Twelve adult males ran on a treadmill at 12 km/h, while data pertaining to lower limb kinematics, kinetics, and electromyography were collected under two clothing conditions: whole leg compression garments and control. The Non-negative matrix factorization algorithm was employed to extract muscle synergy during running, subsequently followed by cluster analysis and correlation analysis. The findings revealed that the CGs increased knee extension and reduced hip flexion at foot strike compared with the control condition. Moreover, CGs were found to enhance stance-phase peak knee extension, while diminishing hip flexion and maximal hip extension during the stance-phase, and the ankle kinematics remained unaltered. We extracted and classified six synergies (SYN1-6) during running and found that only five SYNs were observed after wearing CGs. CGs altered the structure of the synergies and changed muscle activation weights and durations. The current study is the first to apply muscle synergy to discuss the effect of CGs on running biomechanics. Our findings provide neuromuscular evidence for the idea of previous studies that CGs alter the coordination of muscle groups, thereby affecting kinematic characteristics during running.

Background Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome (KTS) is a rare congenital vascular malformation syndrome defined as capillary and venous malformations, and hypertrophy of the limb with or without lymphatic malformation. Currently there is no cure for KTS but the majority of patients are advised to wear compression garments on the affected limb to control swelling and discomfort. Aim To describe used compression therapy methods and their results in a paediatric patient with KTS. Methods The patient records were assessed for the used treatment methods for KTS. Our patient was treated with multimodal treatments to alleviate symptoms, and compression therapy was used specially to control lymphoedema and venous insufficiency. Results A 13-year-old boy with KTS had lymphoedema and venous insufficiency of the right lower extremity since birth. Compression therapy was started at the age of 2 months with a custom-made, single-leg compression pantyhose with gradual compression from distal to proximal regions. Furthermore, a manual lymphatic drainage and intermittent pneumatic compression were added on the regimen respectively. Other treatment methods included sclerotherapy, surgery and medication. None of treatment methods was sufficient alone to reduce limb oedema but the patient reported improved performance when using compression garments and a positive impact after enhanced compression therapy. BackgroundLower limb somatosensation and proprioception are important for maintaining balance. Research has shown that compression garments or exposure to textured surfaces, can enhance somatosensation however, little is known about the effect of combined compression and texture on somatosensory acuity in the lower limb. This study aimed to assess the effects of combined compression socks with a plantar textured sole, on lower limb somatosensory acuity.MethodsThirty participants completed a somatosensory acuity task (active movement extent discrimination apparatus; AMEDA) under three conditions: barefoot (control condition), standard knee-high compression sock (compression sock), and knee-high compression sock with internal rubber nodules situated on the sole (textured-compression sock). Somatosensory acuity was assessed between the different sock conditions for the (i) entire group, (ii) high performers, and (iii) low performers. It was hypothesized that low performers would see gains wearing either sock, but the greatest improvement would be in the textured-compression sock condition.ResultsAMEDA scores were not significantly different between conditions when the entire group was analyzed (p = 0.078). The low performers showed an improvement in somatosensory acuity when wearing the compression sock (p = 0.037) and the textured compression sock (p = 0.024), when compared to barefoot, but there was no difference between the two sock conditions (p > 0.05). The high performers did not show any improvement (p > 0.05 for all).ConclusionThese findings demonstrate that additional sensory feedback may be beneficial to individuals with lower baseline somatosensory acuity but is unlikely to provide benefit for those with higher somatosensory acuity.

Women with mild breast cancer-related arm lymphedema (BCRAL) mostly receive treatment with compression garments and instructions in self-care to prevent the progression of lymphedema. However, wearing a compression garment may be experienced as negative and may affect health-related quality of life (HRQOL) more than the lymphedema itself. The aim of this study was to investigate if there is a difference in lymphedema-specific HRQOL, between women with mild BCRAL wearing compression garments or not for 6 months. Participants with mild BCRAL (Lymphedema relative volume <10%) rated their HRQOL by the Lymphedema Quality of Life Inventory (LyQLI), 6 months after diagnosis and being randomized to compression group (CG) or non-compression group (NCG). Both groups received self-care instructions, and the CG was treated with a standard compression garment, compression class 1. Data from 51 women (30 in the CG and 21 in the NCG), were analyzed. Both the CG and the NCG experienced a low negative impact on HRQOL in physical, psychosocial, and practical domains (score <1). However, the CG experienced a higher negative impact on median HRQOL in the practical domain compared to the NCG, 0.23/0.08 respectively, (p = 0.026). In the specific items, more participants in the CG reported a negative impact on HRQOL compared to the NCG in employment activities 23%/0%, (p = 0.032), embarrassment by lymphedema/compression garments 33%/5%, (p = 0.017), feeling discomfort/embarrassment while doing sports and hobbies 30%/5%, (p = 0.034) and having to answer questions about the lymphedema 27%/0% (p = 0.015). Overall, the lymphedema-specific HRQOL was high after 6 months in women with mild lymphedema, with only a minor difference between the groups. Some women may however perceive practical and emotional issues with the compression garment. These aspects should be considered in patient education and when planning/evaluating treatment. Sensory over-responsiveness, identified through self-report and quantitative sensory testing, has been associated with compression garment non-adherence in a burn-injured cohort. This study sought expert consensus on the usefulness of, and recommendations for, sensory modulation strategies to improve compression garment adherence in sensory over-responsive adults after burn. Experts in the field of sensory modulation were invited to participate in a mixed-methods, three-round electronic Delphi study. Experts (N = 18) agreed that sensory modulation therapy may be a useful clinical tool to improve compression garment adherence. Twenty-two items reached consensus as essential to assessment, treatment, or therapist training. With adequate therapist training and individualized assessment and treatment, sensory modulation strategies may be a useful clinical approach to improving compression garment adherence in those who are sensory over-responsive after burn. Background: Compression garments are the basis of the maintenance phase of the breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) treatment. The aim of this study is to investigate the adherence to compression garment wear and the associated factors among patients with BCRL. Methods and Results: Patients who received standard therapy and training on compression garment wear from a single center were asked to fill out a 28-item questionnaire on compression garment wear. Adherence to compression garment wear and the associated factors were examined. These factors were compared between patients who were wearing and who were not wearing compression garments as recommended. The study was completed with 60 patients. Twenty-five percent of the patients used custom-made compression garment. The rate of patients wearing compression garments as per recommendation was 51.7% (n = 31). The most common reasons for not wearing/discontinuation included functional difficulties in daily life (33%) and discomfort (28.8%). Compared according to the factors with potential impact on wearing, the rate of garment wear as per recommendation was statistically significantly higher in patients who had modified radical mastectomy than in those who had breast-conserving surgery (p = 0.038). Conclusion: Although standard information was provided to the patients, the adherence to compression garments was nonoptimal. The economic status of the patients is one of the main factors affecting the choice of compression garments and thus their adherence. To improve the adherence to this method, which is the basis of maintenance treatment of lymphedema, training programs to reduce patient beliefs and anxiety that are tailored to individual needs can be useful. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the amount and scope of knowledge on sleep disturbance in cancer survivors who have lymphedema. The research question investigated was "what are the known sleep disturbances in cancer survivors with lymphedema?" Methods: A literature search was performed on February 15 to March 27, 2021, in four databases following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) and structure recommended by Arksey and O'Malley. An iterative process of study selection was performed by two reviewers for abstract and full-text review. The Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal tools were used to analyze study quality. Results: One hundred twenty-one unique references were reviewed, and seven met the inclusion criteria. One article had the primary aim of assessing sleep and noted that the presence of lymphedema did increase the risk for sleep disturbance. Four cross-sectional studies compared sleep quality between cancer survivors with lymphedema and cancer survivors without lymphedema. These studies found that lymphedema is a significant predictor of insomnia and is a risk factor for insomnia. Two randomized control trials compared sleep among breast cancer survivors with lymphedema after an intervention. Sleep improved with a yoga intervention and was unchanged after adding a night-time compression garment. Conclusion: In this scoping review, breast and gynecological cancer survivors with lymphedema report increased sleep disturbance compared to survivors without lymphedema. Early diagnosis and compression treatment are important to prevent progression in breast cancer-related arm lymphedema (BCRAL). However, some mild BCRAL can be reversible, and therefore, compression treatment may not be needed. The aim of this study was to investigate the proportion of women with mild BCRAL showing progression/no progression of lymphedema after treatment with or without compression garments, differences in changes of lymphedema relative volume (LRV), local tissue water and subjective symptoms during 6 months. Also, adherence to self-care was examined. Seventy-five women diagnosed with mild BCRAL were randomized to a compression group (CG) or noncompression group (NCG). Both groups received self-care instructions, and the CG were treated with a standard compression garment (ccl 1). Women in the NCG who progressed in LRV ≥2%, or exceeded 10% dropped out, and received appropriate treatment. The proportion showing progression/no progression of LRV, and changes in LRV was measured by Water Displacement Method. Changes in local tissue water were measured by Tissue Dielectric Constant (TDC), subjective symptoms by Visual Analogue Scale, and self-care by a questionnaire. A smaller proportion of LRV progression was found in the CG compared to the NCG at 1, 2 and 6 months follow-up (p ≤ 0.013). At 6 months, 16% had progression of LRV in the CG, compared to 57% in the NCG, (p = 0.001). Thus, 43% in the NCG showed no progression and could manage without compression. Also, CG had a larger reduction in LRV, at all time-points (p ≤ 0.005), and in the highest TDC ratio, when same site followed, at 6 months (p = 0.025). Subjective symptoms did not differ between the groups, except at 1 month, where the CG experienced more reduced tension (p = 0.008). There were no differences in adherence to self-care. Aim: Lymphoedema is associated with dysfunctional lymphatics, tissue fibrosis and inflammatory changes in the skin and local tissue. Ensuring compression supports tissue health is crucial to managing lymphoedema. Providing patients with safe compression which enhances their tissue health is paramount when supporting their 24-hour self-management regimens. This case study explores the use of a new compression garment in two sitting positions in an adult with primary lymphoedema. Method: An 18-year-old female (body mass index 25.2 kg/m2) with Milroy's disease was recruited. She attended two separate 1-hour sessions to evaluate tissue oxygenation (StO2) in chair-sitting and long-sitting (sitting up with a supported back and legs horizontal) positions. Following removal of her usual class 2 (20–30 mmHg) flat-knit compression hosiery, StO2 was recorded for 20 minutes: pre-, during and post the application of an adjustable compression garment (Lohmann & Rauscher) to the right leg. Results: In the long-sitting position, StO2 levels started high at baseline (94.5%), and were relatively maintained both during and post-a short 20-minute intervention (94.1%). In the chair-sitting position, StO2 levels were significantly lower at baseline (52%), showing a 77% increase during the intervention (92%), followed by a small 9% decrease post-intervention (83.7%). Conclusion: This compression garment significantly increased StO2 levels in the chair-sitting position, while maintaining the effects of the patient's compression stockings, in the long-sitting position. Similar to non-lymphoedematous limbs, the patient's normal prescription hosiery maintains StO2. Through implementation of the short intervention sessions, night compression garments may have the potential to improve tissue health in individuals with primary lymphoedema, encouraging self-management and offering a potential night compression solution where the need arises in a 24-hour management plan. Background: There is a need for an appropriate instrument to measure the satisfaction of patients about therapeutic textile devices used for breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). Methods and Results: A new satisfaction questionnaire about therapeutic textile devices used for BCRL was developed and psychometrically tested. An approach to criterion validity by contrast of hypothesis was made. Different average scores were expected depending on the type of therapeutic textile device: Kinesio taping, compression garment, and multilayer low-stretch bandage. Items were analyzed in nine phases: apparent validity, missing responses, internal consistency, factor analysis, reproducibility, confirmation of factor analysis, contrast of hypothesis, variability, and time for completion. One hundred fifty women were sampled in a consecutive order. A final questionnaire was drafted that fulfilled the validation hypothesis, including 20 items that explored 4 dimensions: mood, patient comfort, patient compliance, and perceived benefits. The total Cronbach's α was 0.87. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.93 for test–retest and 0.91 for inter-rater. Neither ceiling nor floor effects were observed. The average burden for the respondent and interviewer was 5.6 (standard deviation [SD] = 3.8) and 2.2 (SD = 1.3) minutes, respectively. Background: The few previous studies that focused on the effects of compression garments (CG) on distance running performance have simultaneously measured electromyogram, physiological, and perceptual parameters. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of CG on muscle activation and median frequency during and after distance running, as well as blood-lactate concentration and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) during distance running. Methods: Eight healthy male recreational runners were recruited to randomly perform two 40 min treadmill running trials, one with CG, and the other with control garment made of normal cloth. The RPE and the surface electromyography (EMG) of 5 lower extremity muscles including gluteus maximus (GM), rectus femoris (RF), semitendinosus (ST), tibialis anterior (TA), and gastrocnemius (GAS) were measured during the running trial. The blood-lactate levels before and after the running trial were measured. Results: Wearing CG led to significant lower muscle activation (p 0.05). Conclusion: Wearing CG was associated with significantly lower muscle activation and higher median frequency in the running-related key muscles during distance running. This finding suggested that wearing CG may improve muscle function, which might enhance running performance and prevent muscle fatigue.

Correct body posture is a balanced musculoskeletal body position; however, today many people face severe posture defects, and their body posture may be far from a normal, causing progressive musculoskeletal deformities and pain, as well as affecting the functionality and appearance of the body. Human daily habits, lack of physical activities and overall a sedentary lifestyle cause such phenomena. The research focuses on studies of human body measurements and body characteristics while wearing posture-corrective equipment for the assessment of the effectiveness of different posture correctors (abbreviated as PoC). Four test-persons were selected and scanned using 3D anthropometrical scanner in relaxed stand position wearing five different posture correctors for a prolonged period of time in order to determine the effectiveness and functionality of each PoC. Four distance (linear) human body measurements were gained to quantify postural changes - scapula position depth, upper torso position, shoulder projection height and hip-waist depth. General feedbacks on each subject impression of wearing PoCs were also received. Correction of posture could serve as a preventive or treatment for spine-related problems; though, commercially available correctors could negatively affect wearer’s health due to non-conformity of the design and/or used material. Therefore, PoC selection and wearing procedures should be solved with more personalized and customized approaches.

Single-leg balance control is very important in injury prevention (such as reducing the chance of falls and ankle sprains) and sport performance. Although compression garments (CGs) have been used for various purposes, it is unclear if wearing CGs can improve single-leg balance in healthy individuals. The purpose of the study was to examine if wearing CGs (pants) could enhance single-leg balance, and to compare the impact of wearing CGs on single-leg balance between conditions with and without extrinsic visual feedback. Twenty-five healthy individuals (aged 20-30 years) participated in the study. The Athletic Single-Leg Stability Test (ASLST) of the Biodex Balance System (BBS) was used to examine single-leg balance. Subjects were given new CGs with the proper size that covered the area from above ankle to the waist. For the condition without extrinsic visual feedback, subjects' eyes remained open but a large white board was used to cover the screen of the BBS. Subjects performed a combination of 4 testing protocols in a random order. Significance level was set at p < 0.05 for all comparisons. Subjects demonstrated better singleleg balance when wearing CGs than without wearing CGs (p = 0.035). In addition, eliminating extrinsic visual feedback greatly worsened single-leg balance (p = 0.000). However, no significant interaction was observed between the two variables (p = 0.361). This study shows what wearing CGs enhanced single-leg balance and eliminating extrinsic visual feedback hampered single-leg balance in healthy individuals. Clinicians may consider suggesting their clients to wear CGs to improve balance control, therefore reducing the chance of injures and enhancing sport performance. Clinicians can also provide extrinsic visual feedback to enhance safety and speed up the motor learning process at early stages of balance training. J Strength Cond Res 35(12): 3300-3307, 2021-The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of a commercially available neoprene knee sleeve (KS) on exercise performance and muscle activity during an exhaustive leg press exercise. Twenty resistance-trained individuals, 11 men {21.0 +/- 2.2 years; 77.7 +/- 8.7 kg; 1 repetition maximum (1RM/body mass [BM]): 0.30 +/- 0.04} and 9 women (22.0 +/- 3.5 years; 66.1 +/- 9.1 kg; 1RM/BM: 0.30 +/- 0.04), all subjects (21.5 +/- 2.8 years; 72.5 +/- 10.5 kg; 1RM/BM: 0.30 +/- 0.04), participated in 3 testing sessions. The second and third sessions were performed using a counterbalanced and randomized design in which subjects exercised with (WS) or without (NS) KSs and performed 6 sets of leg press exercise at 80% of 1RM until failure with a 3-minute rest between sets. Number of repetitions, blood lactate (BL), heart rate (HR), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and peak and average power were recorded after each set. Surface electromyography (EMG) of the right and left vastus lateralis muscles was also recorded to compare muscle activity between conditions. Significance was set at p <= 0.05, and values are presented as mean +/- SD. No significant differences were observed in the total number of repetitions for all sets (p = 0.3; WS 75.3 +/- 33.7, NS 79.8 +/- 34.3) and the number of repetitions per set between conditions (p <= 0.05) or between men and women. Similarly, no significance differences (p <= 0.05) were observed for BL, HR, RPE, or EMG per set between conditions or between men and women. In athletic populations, compression socks (CS) may improve exercise performance recovery. However, their potential to improve performance and/or recovery following exercise in non-athletic populations is unknown. Our study evaluated the effects of CS on exercise performance and recovery from a graded maximal treadmill test. Insufficiently active adults (n = 10, 60% female, average physical activity ~60 minutes/week) performed two graded maximal exercise tests; one while wearing below-knee CS, and the other trial with regular socks (CON). Order of trials was randomized. For both trials, heart rate, lactate, and rating of perceived exertion were measured at each stage and at one, five, and tenminutes post-exercise. Additionally, recovery variables (soreness, tightness, annoyingness, tenderness, pulling) were measured at 24 and 48 hours post-exercise using a visual analog scale. Paired-samples t-tests were used to compare exercise and recovery variables between CS and CON trials. Heart rate, lactate, and rating of perceived exertion were not different between trials for any stage during the exercise test or immediate recovery. Most 24- and 48-hour recovery variables were significantly improved after the CS trial, with values 34.6 - 42.3% lower at 24 hours and 40.3 - 61.4% lower at 48 hours compared to CON. Compression socks provided a significant and meaningful improvement in recovery variables 24-48 hours following maximal exercise. The current compression garment selection guide is targeted at the earliest clinical stages of chronic venous disease (CVD) and assumes a priori that application of a higher class of compression improves the calf muscle pump function, which is the major mechanism promoting venous return from the lower limb to the heart.Objective of the study: to evaluate the calf muscle pump function in patients with the early forms of CVD using different classes of compression garments.Material and methods: A total of 30 patients (45 lower limbs) with Class 1 CVD (CEAP classification) were enrolled in the study. The calf muscle pump function was evaluated during wearing compression garments using remote cableless photoplethysmography of Bodytronic measurement system (Bauerfeind, Germany) with automatic data processing. The investigators measured venous refilling time (T0) and pump capacity (V0) in patients without compression garments and also in those wearing classes 0, I and II compression garments (RAL standard, Venotrain micro, Bauerfiend socks). All indicators were measured three times with an interval of 30 minutes. Background: Lipoabdominoplasty (LABP) is a frequently performed surgical procedure in the field of plastic surgery that often requires physical therapy in order to minimize postoperative complications, augment the postoperative outcomes, and enhance recovery. Intermittent pneumatic compression therapy (IPCT) is a physical therapy modality that may be used in the management of LABP population. This study aimed to assess the influences of intermittent pneumatic compression therapy on the resolution of edema and improvement in postoperative patient satisfaction following LABP. Methods: Forty-three females, aged 35–55 years, who underwent LABP, were involved in this prospective randomized study. They were divided into two groups: group A wherein 22 patients wore a compression garment (CG) for 24 h, through 4 weeks; group B wherein 21 patients wore CG besides the application of IPCT for 45 min, 3 times a week, for 4 weeks. The abdominal circumferences were measured at three positions: 3 cm above the umbilicus, at the umbilicus, and 3 cm below the umbilicus. Additionally, patient satisfaction rate was assessed by visual analog scale (VAS; in mm). All patients were assessed three times (Initial Assessment, During Assessment, and Final Assessment). Results: With reference to the abdominal circumferences at three levels and VAS satisfactory scores, there were statistically significant differences between both groups in Final Assessment (p <.04) in favor of group B. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of whole-body compression garments on aerobic and anaerobic performance, 3-km running record and physical fitness in amateur marathoners. Ten male amateur marathoners without any medical problems were measured compression garments following non-compression garments intervention (n=10, age: 25.40±2.72 yrs.; height: 173.71±3.52 cm; weight: 70.55±7.16 kg; body mass index: 23.34±1.70). The compression and non-compression garments intervention were conducted at weekly intervals. We measured aerobic and anaerobic performance, 3-km running record, and the physical fitness according to each intervention. As a result, VO2max, total exercise duration, anaerobic threshold were significantly higher in compression intervention than non-compression intervention. Also, minimum power was significantly higher in compression intervention than non-compression intervention. 3-km running performance was significantly faster in compression intervention than non-compression intervention. In addition, side-step was significantly faster in compression intervention than non-compression intervention. In the current state of innovation in wearable technology, there is a vast array of biomonitoring devices available to record electrocardiogram (ECG) in users, a key indicator of cardiovascular health. Of these devices, armband form factors serve as a convenient all-in-one platform for integration of electronic systems; yet, much of the current literature does not address the appropriate electrode location nor contact pressures necessary to achieve reliable system level ECG sensing. Therefore, this paper will elucidate the role of electrode location and contact pressure on the ECG sensing performance of an electronic textile (E-textile) armband worn on the upper left arm. We first carry out an ECG signal characterization to validate the ideal armband electrode placement necessary to measure high quality signals without sacrificing practical assembly of the armband. We then model and experimentally quantify the contact pressure between the armband onto the upper arm as a function of armband size, a critical parameter dictating skin-electrode impedance and ECG signal quality. Finally, we evaluate how the size of the armband form factor affects its ECG sensing performance. Our experimental results confirm that armbands exhibiting modeled contact pressures between 500 Pa to 1500 Pa can acquire ECG signals. However, armband sizes exhibiting experimental contact pressures of 1297 ± 102 Pa demonstrate the best performance with similar signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) compared to wet electrode benchmarks. Objective: Compression garments are well accepted as routine practice for scar management after burn. In a recent systematic review, six main reasons for compression garment non-adherence were identified including sensory disturbances. To further understand the impact of sensory issues, the aim of the present study is to investigate associations between sensory variables and compression garment wear.Method: Adults (N = 117) attending a quaternary adult burns outpatient clinic completed: The Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile; a custom-designed compression garment wear questionnaire; and three quantitative sensory testing procedures (Two-Point Discrimination, Mechanical Detection Threshold and Pressure Pain Threshold).Results: Patients who reported lower Pressure Pain Threshold or Mechanical Detection Threshold, higher acuity for Two Point Discrimination, and higher than average sensory avoiding and sensory sensitivity patterns were less adherent with garment wear.Conclusions: Overall, sensory factors assessed using both self-report and quantitative sensory testing were associated with compression garment adherence. Wearing CG was associated with significantly lower muscle activation and higher median frequency in the running-related key muscles during distance running. The effects of CGs are likely to be related to better proprioceptive control. We aimed to explore the use of CGs in individuals with autism and severe proprioceptive dysfunction (SPD), including individuals with GJH, to control posture and challenging behaviors. (2) Methods: We retrospectively described 14 patients with autism and SPD, including seven with comorbid GJH, who were hospitalized for major challenging behaviors with remaining behavioral symptomatology after the implementation of multidisciplinary approaches, including medication, treatment of organic comorbidities, and behavioral restructuring. Each patient received a CG to wear for at least 1 h (but most often longer) per day for six weeks. We assessed challenging behaviors in these participants with the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC), sensory integration with the Dunn questionnaire, and postural sway and motor performance using a self-designed motricity path at baseline, two weeks, and six weeks. (3) Results: We observed a significant effect on most ABC rating scores at two weeks, which persisted at six weeks (total score, p = 0.004; irritability, p = 0.007; hyperactivity, p = 0.001; lethargy, p = 0.001). Postural control in dorsal and profile positions was significantly improved between before and after wearing the CGs (p = 0.006 and 0.007, respectively). Motor performance was also significantly improved. However, we did not observe a significant change in Dunn sensory scores. During the six-week duration, the treatment was generally well-tolerated. A comorbid GJH diagnosis was not associated with a better outcome. (4) Conclusions: CGs appear to be a promising adjuvant treatment for both behavioral and postural impairments in individuals with autism and SPD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
