At an earlier stage of European funding for projects on technology-enhanced learning, the main thrust was to develop e-learning technologies and on projects that sought to promote the take-up of platforms and services. This contribution is prepared by students after attending lectures of a multidisciplinary course in the context of a complementary studies frame. The students of this course summarized, through a case study, concepts and methods in a straightforward, but structured way. Thanks to the help of a software tool based on Python, an original and open learning platform is realized for students and lecturers and it represents a part of this contribution. Concerning the specific lecture, cargo loads and transportation are important logistical topics in many industries. They dictate the profit of the final product, expenditure, time consumption and labor force utilization. The optimal transportation of any type of cargo is crucial for businesses. More in general, it is possible to say that the proposed problem can be generalized and applied in other main economic problems in which optimization problems are involved. In this work we focused on the optimization of fluid transportation under specified conditions, or constraints, in other words. The aim of the project is to determine the optimal parameters of the system to control the transportation in an optimal way. This material which includes an open software to test the developed concepts through the lecture can be used by students and lecturers. An open link is accessible to the users. more...

Smart mobile devices have fostered new learning scenarios that demand sophisticated interfaces. Multimodal conversational agents have became a strong alternative to develop human-machine interfaces that provide a more engaging and human-like relationship between students and the system. The main developers of operating systems for such devices have provided application programming interfaces for developers to implement their own applications, including different solutions for developing graphical interfaces, sensor control and voice interaction. Despite the usefulness of such resources, there are no strategies defined for coupling the multimodal interface with the possibilities that these devices offer to enhance mobile educative apps with intelligent communicative capabilities and adaptation to the user needs. In this paper, we present a practical m-learning application that integrates features of Android application programming interfaces on a modular architecture that emphasizes interaction management and context-awareness to foster user-adaptively, robustness and maintainability. - Abstract
Introduction to programming is a traditional and compulsory course for first year Computer Science students. However, research in the field of computer science education has highlighted that many students lack on problem solving and computational thinking skills. These issues provoke questions in the academic community as to whether the learning methodology of introductory to programming courses is appropriate. As regards the pedagogical procedure in general, the teacher-centered model was amended with the introduction of Interactive Learning Environments, which promote distributed learning. In this paper, we examine the fundamental skills needed for introductory to programming courses. Additionally, we focus on some of the most popular micro worlds and evaluate them in terms of educational suitability. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] more...

Abstract: We suggest the study of the charging and discharging processes in the capacitor in an RC circuit and the rise and decay of current processes in an RL circuit using computer–interfaced experiments. This approach enables students to understand functions of RC and RL circuits through the visualisation of the processes, understand the use of computer interface for data collection, and speed up the data collection and their analyses. Using Excel for data analysis enables the verification of Kirchhoff''s loop rule for the RC and RL circuits for each instant of time and the determination of time constants for the circuits through the graphical analyses. Context: The number of students enrolled in universities at standard and on-line programming courses is rapidly increasing. This calls for automated evaluation of students assignments. Objective: We aim to develop methods and tools for objective and reljable automated grading that can also provide substantial and comprehensible feedback. Our approach targets introductory programming courses, which have a number of specific features and goals. The benefits are twofold: reducing the workload for teachers, and providing helpful feedback to students in the process of learning. Method: For sophisticated automated evaluation of students' programs, our grading framework combines results of three approaches (i) testing, (ii) software verification, and (iii) control flow graph similarity measurement. We present our tools for software verification and control flow graph similarity measurement, which are publicly available and open source. The tools are based on an intermediate code representation, so they could be applied to a number of programming languages. Results: Empirical evaluation of the proposed grading framework is performed on a corpus of programs written by university students in programming language C within an introductory programming course. Results of the evaluation show that the synergy of proposed approaches improves the quality and precision of automated grading and that automatically generated grades are highly correlated with instructor-assigned grades. Also, the results show that our approach can be trained to adapt to teacher's grading style. Conclusions: In this paper we integrate several techniques for evaluation of student's assignments. The obtained results suggest that the presented tools can find real-world applications in automated grading. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. more...

The Virtual St Andrews (ViStA) project aims to embed students within a Virtual Environment which duplicates, as near as possible, the real University’s centre, functions and social areas. The main project objectives are to allow Postgraduate Taught students, especially international students who only have one year to acculturate, work, socialize and graduate, to experience a pre-arrival orientation, meeting current and prospective students online as well as learning where designated staff and buildings are. The hypothesis that drives the research and virtual world development, is that online activities reduce acclimatisation stress and improve socialization, well being and study readiness. The project aim is to develop a Virtual World through which prospective or incoming students can learn about the University, talk to current students, seek advice and complete tasks that lead them through the orientation process. The world is growing organically through student projects and staff additions. Postprint more...

This paper describes the features of CASTOR, a novel software infrastructure and set of interfaces that has been designed for supporting all the cycle of creation, management and delivery of context-aware stories. CASTOR has been designed for managing an extended set of context dimensions, including the location, the weather, the season, the time of the day and the social context, that are used for creating and delivering engaging listening experiences. The software infrastructure and the user interfaces were tailored to the skills of children of the Primary School, for being used in the context of educational curricula targeted at teaching the structures of narration. In [8, 9] we gave a description of the experimentation of CASTOR with a class of children, focusing on the effects on engagement and learning. In this work we'll focus instead on the technical features of the whole infrastructure and the set of user interfaces supporting all the story lifecycle. In particular the paper will show how, using these interfaces, stories can be created on the locations where they are supposed to happen, how they can be refined in the classroom for improving the quality and how they can be delivered to listeners, respecting all the context conditions specified by the story creators. At the end we'll give some details about the future development of the platform. more...

In this paper we present a novel tablet application for the delivery of narrations that uses an extended set of context dimensions (i.e., location, weather, season, time of the day and social context) for determining the availability of the content. The application is part of a software suite that has been designed for managing all the phases of creation and processing of context-aware stories, and that has been tailored and tested with a class of children aged 7. While many context-aware applications take advantage of the knowledge of the context for diminishing the cognitive load of the users or simply informing them, in this work context-awareness is used for augmenting the user engagement. The paper will present the results of an exploratory study of the application outdoors, focusing on two primary issues: the engagement, defined as the sum of six relevant parameters, and the relevance of the context dimensions as perceived by the children listening to the stories. more...

This paper describes the design and the experimentation of a tablet-based authoring system for supporting the creation of stories in-situ, in the context of a learning path that has led 19 children aged 7 of the second class of a Primary School to learn how to build stories using different techniques, ranging from the traditional writing techniques exercised in class to the in-situ authoring with the tablet application. The project was characterized by a strong involvement of the teachers, that modeled a substantial part of the ordinary classroom work for embedding the in-situ experimentation and designing a smooth learning path.To our knowledge CASTOR is one of the first authoring systems allowing the direct creation of structured stories in-situ, rather than the simple gathering of material. Its architecture is based on a story model presented in previous works [3, 20] and characterized by the use of the environmental and social context for augmenting the emotional engagement of the story listeners. All the components of the architecture have been designed for complying with the learning needs and the skills of a class of young children. The final part of the paper will present the results of the experimentation, that gave interesting insights not only on the use of the authoring interface itself, but also on its effects on the children learning process. more...

Genel olarak bakıldığı zaman BÖTE öğrencilerinin Bilgisayar Destekli Eğitime (BDE) karşı yüksek derecede olumlu bir yaklaşım sergilemektedirler. Sınıf seviyesi, cinsiyet ve gelir düzeyi bakımından bilgisayar destekli eğitime yönelik tutumlarda anlamlı bir farklılık bulunmamaktadır. Tutum açısından gruplar arasında anket maddeleri bazında yaratıcılık becerisi, BDE yerine klasik anlatımı tercih etme, bilgisayar kullanımını teşvik, aktif bir şekilde bilgisayar kullanımı, bilgisayar ile eğitimin bağdaştırılması, harcanan emeğe göre BDE’nin öğretimsel katkısı ve eğlence noktasında çeşitli farklılıklar bulunmuştur. more...

The aim of this graduation theses is to explore one of the theme of the contemporary educational reform in Czech republic what is development of creativeness at the basic school education. This question is outlined in general terms in the firs part of the theses and subsequently developed on the subject of physics education. Special emphasis is placed on the comparing of standard creativeness developing instruments and usage of computing technologies by computer supported education what is another essential item of current education. Significant part of this thesis deals with the software for the basic school physics education and its evaluation. The theses ends with the experiment with pupils of a basic school that should compare these two creativeness developing instruments mentioned above and give impetus to another research in this subject. more...

We suggest the study of the charging and discharging processes in the capacitor in an RC circuit and the rise and decay of current processes in an RL circuit using computer–interfaced experiments. This approach enables students to understand functions of RC and RL circuits through the visualisation of the processes, understand the use of computer interface for data collection, and speed up the data collection and their analyses. Using Excel for data analysis enables the verification of Kirchhoff's loop rule for the RC and RL circuits for each instant of time and the determination of time constants for the circuits through the graphical analyses. more...
