With the global population on the rise, the construction industry has experienced significant growth in the last two decades. Cement, a key component in concrete production, contributes up to 8% of total CO2 emissions. This underscores the demand for concrete solutions that are durable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. Alkali-activated materials (AAMs) present a promising alternative to traditional cements, contributing to more eco-friendly concrete production. In this research, twelve mixture compositions are explored, incorporating various combinations of precursors (slag, fly ash) and activators (sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate). Different alkali dosages and solution-to-binder ratios are also considered. The independent and combined effects of these parameters are observed on the development of main binder properties through specific experimental equipment. The first part focuses on characterizing the setting behavior of these novel binders. Continuous non-destructive tests, including ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) measurements and isothermal calorimetry tests, are combined with traditional tests such as slump flow, Vicat, and uniaxial compressive strength tests. For characterizing viscoelastic behavior post-setting, a novel technique involving repeated short-term creep tests is employed. This approach allows continuous monitoring, facilitating the characterization of early-age elastic stiffness and creep properties. To model short-term creep behavior, a power-law creep function is utilized. For long-term creep, a logarithmic creep function is applied. Furthermore, a logarithmic trend is observed in the development of specific creep over an extended duration of loading. Dans cette étude de recherche participative, nous avons développé un protocole de collecte de données pour comprendre les obstacles à la collaboration dans le secteur de l’architecture, de l’ingénierie et de la construction (AEC). Ce protocole se compose de trois étapes principales :la modélisation du processus de travail (workflow), l’évaluation de la qualité de la collaboration et le recensement des points aidants/bloquants survenus durant le projet. Il se base sur des méthodes visuelles pour faciliter la collecte et l’analyse des données lors d’entretiens. Pour évaluer l'adéquation de ce protocole à la réalité du terrain, nous avons organisé un workshop avec des praticien·ne·s du secteur AEC pour évaluer l'utilité, l'utilisabilité et l'acceptabilité de l'outil. This study is aimed at evaluating the strength of stabilised soil collected from the Port of Norvik, Stockholm, Sweden, where 350,000 m 3 of clay had to be stabilized. The tests were performed in the laboratory of the Swedish Geotechnical Institute (SGI). The soil was stabilised by binder mixtures using Portland cement clinker (PCC) and lime and lime kiln dust (LKD). Accelerators (X-seed 100 BASF, PCC, LKD and salt) were added to the soil samples for quicker stabilization. The strength of the stabilised soil was assessed using resonance frequency measurements of seismic P-waves by an ICP accelerometer in order to estimate the shear strength of the soil and to evaluate the effects from the accelerators, binder ratios, and the curing temperature on the gains in stabilization and strength. Various proportions of the binders were tested, i.e. 50/50 cement/lime and 50/50 PCC/lime. The temperature was measured using a calorimeter in double experiments. On the 18th of October 1908, the Belgian parliament voted in favour of the Belgian take-over of the Congo Free State from the Belgian king Léopold II, who had privately owned the Congolese territory but was forced to give up ‘his’ colony after the international outcry over the well-known Congo atrocities. With this vote, the Congolese territory officially switched hands, and the Belgian rule over Congo would remain in place until 1960. The advocates of the reprise had held up prospects of great gain by referring to the enormous mineral wealth of the colony, whereas the adversaries acutely remarked that the colony would only remain profitable if Belgium would continue on the same plundering elan than their internationally condemned king. The reality-check came quickly, when one of the strongest advocates, Jules Renkin, visited the Belgian Congo in his new role as the first minister of colonies. After a five-month journey through ‘his’ colony, he realized that for the material realization of the colonial ambitions to be economically and practically feasible, a cheap, locally produced building material would be of quintessential importance. However, as the colonial presence was justified through the paternalistic image of ‘helping’ the African inhabitants on their ‘path to modernity’, this colonial building material could not be one of the existing local building materials, as these were publicly denounced for being non-durable, insalubre [unhygienic] or even puant [stinking] — although in reality they remained in use for all sorts of colonial buildings throughout Belgian colonialism. A comprehensive list of factors that affect the sustainability of urban housing is provided in a table, based on a systematic review of the recent Scopus-indexed literature (2015-2020). This table is presented in complete form (with a full list of references) as a supplementary file to an article (part of the first author’s Ph.D. thesis) which is currently in press by Springer (Book Series: Proceedings in Earth and Environmental Sciences; a preprint URL is available). A total number of 118 journal articles, conference papers, and book sections are studied from all over the world (full-text review) to extract the indicators that, according to authors, affect the sustainability of urban houses. The factors are made by combining the related indicators together and are prioritized based on the number of references in which they are mentioned (out of a total of 118). The study investigates the effect of Portland cement and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) added in changed proportions as stabilising agents on soil parameters: uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Proctor compactness and permeability. The material included dredged clayey silts collected from the coasts of Timrå, Östrand. Soil samples were treated by different ratio of the stabilising agents and water and tested for properties. Study aimed at estimating variations of permeability, UCS and compaction of soil by changed ratio of binders. Permeability tests were performed on soil with varied stabilising agents in ratio (high water / low binder) with ratio 70/30%, 50/50%, and 30/70%. The highest level of permeability was achieved by ratio 70/30% of cement/slag, while the lowest-by 30/70%. Proctor compaction was assessed on a mixture of ash and green liquor sludge, to determine optimal moisture content for the most dense soil. The maximal dry density at 1.12 g/cm 3 was obtained by 38.75 % of water in a binder. Shear strength and P-wave velocity were measured using ISO/TS17892-7 and visualised as a function of UCS. There are several tools developed to evaluate the sustainability of buildings, some of which are used internationally. However, their efficiency has been questioned. Several research studies these Sustainability Assessment Tools (SAT) from various perspectives. Nevertheless, only a few have studied the prioritization of SAT indicators based on the recent literature. Paying special attention to urban housing, this research follows the method and data from two previous investigations (parts of the same project) to evaluate the prioritization of credits used in LEED v4 for Homes Design and Construction, one of the most advanced and internationally adopted certificates for urban housing, to see to what extent its scoring system (i.e. the points that are assigned to its credits) is aligned with the priorities existing in the recent literature related to urban housing sustainability. The data from a systematic review of 118 Scopus-indexed papers are used. The results highlight significant differences in the prioritization of factors between the LEED evaluation system and the recent literature. We are living on a finite planet. Humankind is overstepping planetary boundaries, however. In 2021, worldwide consumption has exceeded the yearly bio-capacity of the Earth (what we call the overshoot day) on the 29th of July. For industrialised countries, the situation is far worse: In 2022, Belgium reached that overshoot day on the 26th of March. In the face of these urgent challenges of sustainable resource use, there is wide agreement on the need for a transition, a fundamental societal shift, towards, amongst others, a circular economy (CE), the focus of this book.The book speaks deliberately of transitioning. This marks our focus on transition processes and activities. Discussions of ‘the transition’ easily get stuck in abstract visions, remote future goals and ideological statements about the desired world of tomorrow. By contrast, much more attention needs to be paid to concrete transformation processes that could lead towards these projected futures. Transition how? Where to? By whom?We highlight that companies are key actors in CE transitioning. Current paper presents the results of the experimental analysis on permafrost uppermost soil samples with various physical properties (moisture, porosity) tested with varied external pressure and time. The aim of this work is to test properties of the soil samples intended for the construction of buildings, railways and objects of civil infrastructure by modeled external pressure, data visualization and analysis. Variations in the soil samples were studied by analysis of the equivalent soil cohesion (Ceq) in frozen soil samples. Methods include integrated application of the laboratory experiments, methods of the statistical data analysis and 3D plotting performed by the selected LaTeX packages. Laboratory experiments were performed using KrioLab equipment ‘Sharikovy Stamp PSH-1’. The 15 series of experiments have been tested. Project definition refers to the first stages of a project life cycle (i.e. planning, programming, and preliminary design) in which client needs are identified and a conceptual design solution is developed. Defining and formalizing client needs are complex tasks especially in complex projects such as hospitals since naturally multiple clients such as managers, the government, users, clinicians, patients, and staff members among others, are involved. Each client has their own needs and interests that could sometimes be conflicting with those of the others.However, traditional methods of project definition management have been proved to be inadequate. In the traditional approach, users are rarely consulted, and the focus is more on technical issues and less on functional aspects, which impacts the future work environment and may consequently lead to increased hospital-acquired infections or patient mortality. Participative approaches such as Lean-led design, in which users including patients are involved in the process of project definition, are proposed to address this problem. However, little is discussed in the literature regarding the value of such approaches in terms of better alignment of projects with client needs.This research first identified the factors that can impact the alignment between needs and design solutions during the project definition via a systematic literature review. Based on these factors, a framework was provided to assess and improve the alignment. The validity of the framework was then empirically evaluated and revised based on a longitudinal mega-hospital case study that had implemented the Lean-led design approach the objective of which was to ensure a harmony between needs and requirements as a result of integrating two hospitals. The main assumption here is that better alignment provides more value to end users and the main contribution of this research is a framework that can help researchers and managers to assess and evaluate alignm, La définition du projet fait référence aux trois premières phases du cycle de vie du projet, soit le montage, la programmation et la conception préliminaire, où les besoins du client sont identifiés et la conception architecturale est développée. Making cities resilient and sustainable is only possible if the energy consumption of buildings is reduced. Retrofitting is one of the main tools of the environmental policies developed in cold and temperate climates, leading to the replacement of products considered inefficient. This is particularly the case for glazing, which is a key element in the energy system of a building. However, most of the glass waste generated by renovation is landfilled while the development of a circular economy in the glass industry seems today highly challenging. This paper studies barriers and opportunities to increase the recycling and repair of insulating glass units. To do so, we follow three approaches: a literature review, a series of interviews and a case study of a glazed office district in Brussels. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the main issues relating to the management of glass waste in the building sector and underlines the importance of economic instruments to support the spread of sorting and recycling practices. Pre-assembled scissor structures can be transformed from a compact bundle of elements to a fully deployed configuration, offering a considerable volume expansion. Intended geometrical incompatibilities during transformation can be introduced as a design strategy to obtain bistability, which allows instantaneously achieving some structural stability in the deployed state. Because of these incompatibilities, some specific members bend during transformation, resulting in a controlled potentially tunable snap-through behaviour. Geometric design methodologies were proposed in the literature to obtain a compatible geometry (i.e. with all of the beams straight) in the folded and the deployed configurations. However, most of these approaches do not consider finite hub sizes or introduce extra incompatibilities in the geometry by adding hub legs. From the first fieldtrips for the design of a library in Burundi to involving over 150 workshop participants in the construction of a public building in Belgium, the stories compiled in this book tell how BC architects & studies engage in acts of building. BC believes that, in order to have a positive impact on our society, architects need to intervene beyond the narrow definition of the professional who designs and controls the execution of buildings. Hence, BC ventures into material production, contracting, storytelling, knowledge transfer, community organization, which influence their design approach. This book is the result of the work that Pauline Lefebvre (FNRS post-doctoral fellow) conducted at, with and about BC architects & studies. She researched their practice as part of her broader inquiry about architects’ increased involvement into construction (and) materials as a renewed form of political engagement in architecture. PREFABRICATION DE HAUTE PERFORMANCE ENVIRONNEMENTALE:oPi a identifié une série de projets Batex ayant développé des solutions constructives innovantes en RBC, notamment des projets en ossature bois, façade rideau bois, structure en béton préfabriqué, ossature métallique, panneaux de façade en paille, etc. Ces techniques de préfabrication innovantes sont adaptées aux nouvelles exigences énergétiques bruxelloises (PEB Passif 2015) entrées en vigueur le 1er janvier 2015 et permettent de les dépasser dans la plupart des cas. Les différentes typologies de bâtiments et l'audace des concepteurs des projets exemplaires ont permis de générer une panoplie de systèmes de façades préfabriquées qui établissent de nouveaux savoirs et savoir-faire dans le domaine des bâtiments à haute efficacité énergétique et en construction durable (énergie, matériaux, confort, qualité de la construction).Les systèmes préfabriqués à haute qualité environnementale en bois représentent la majorité des projets Batex. Les techniques de murs en béton, du container en métal et des façades rideau sont, elles aussi, réinventées :on parle de mur passif béton, de container métallique à haute performance thermique ou encore de façade rideau avec cadre en bois. Y sont pointés les moments charnières de transmission de l’information et les supports à produire afin que, au final, la réalisation soit conforme aux exigences en termes d’étanchéité à l’air. Ainsi, ce second chapitre montrera quels outils de communication existent déjà pour s’adresser aux différents partenaires de l’acte de bâtir – en ce compris ceux qui sont « au pied du mur » - autour de la question de l’étanchéité à l’air et, lorsque les outils n’existent pas, quels sont les points d’attention de la communication à créer. Ces informations doivent être produites par l’architecte de la manière la plus lisible possible. Les exemples analysés dans cet article montrent que la lisibilité d’un simple trait ou d’un aplat de couleur continu indiquant la zone étanche à l’air améliore la compréhension de l’enjeu et, partant, la réalisation du travail, évitant ainsi des démontages, des réparations et des pertes de temps et de coûts financiers parfois considérables.Le troisième chapitre analyse d’une part, l’implémentation des pratiques d’étanchéité à l’air dans les projets exemplaires Bruxellois, et d’autre part les facteurs d’influence du processus d’étude et de mise en œuvre de ces pratiques, par le biais de différents niveaux d’étude. Il en ressort que même si ces analyses dévoilent de nombreux efforts de la part des acteurs en RBC, la mise en place d’une circularité des matériaux de construction reste en attente de nombreux éléments clé qui permettraient son implémentation de manière effective :• La mise en place d’une législation adaptée.• La mise à jour l’enseignement,• La mise en place de bases de données unifiées et géo-lo, SMART BUILDING: Dans cette thématique, oPi analyse la notion de « smart building » à travers un échantillon de Bâtiments exemplaires en Région de Bruxelles Capitale. Cette étude aborde ce sujet de deux manières :d’une part celle-ci analyse le degré et le type d’implication des technologies numériques en phase de conception, et d’autre part à travers l’implication de technologies dites « intelligentes» embarquée durant tout le cycle de vie du bâtiment. Ce type de bâtiment demande une conception, un suivi et une appropriation de projet coordonnés, selon un processus de partage des informations et une accessibilité de l'usage de ses technologies par les utilisateurs finaux. Dans le 1er chapitre, l'étude menée par oPi dresse avant tout un paysage des méthodes et des outils numériques utilisés à divers stades du projet et questionne leur adéquation et leur accessibilité, à travers le retour d'expérience d'experts impliqués dans les projets exemplaires bruxellois. Les technologies de gestion de l’information dans le secteur de la construction durable en Région Bruxelloise sont en plein développement et tendent à se rapprocher des tendances européennes actuelles (TIC, BIM, Simulation énergétiques, études LCA & LCC, référentiels numériques, etc.). Cette question est importante voire centrale dans le type de projets abordés par oPi, étant donné qu'un nombre important d’entre eux fait appel à des techniques de construction innovantes qui requièrent des outils paramétriques (préfabrication, études thermiques, étude environnementales, monitoring, etc .). A l'heure actuelle, ces technologies ne semblent pas dialoguer entre elles et ne sont pas intégrées au processus de conception du projet. L’analyse met en contexte un échantillon de méthodes et d'outils numériques rencontrés dans les projets exemplaires étudiés.L’étude révèle que la majorité de ces outils et technologies demandent un investissement disproportionné par rapport à leur accessibilité et leur utilité finale dans le, CHAINE D'ETUDE: oPi analyse la chaine d’étude de plusieurs projets exemplaires présentés dans les chapitres précédents. Cette analyse permettra de mettre en évidence l’articulation des divers maillons de la chaine d’étude dans le contexte particulier de chacun des projets. Le premier chapitre traite des nouveaux maillons de la chaine d'étude. L’analyse cartographique dressée, révèle l'émergence de nouveaux maillons dans la chaine de construction durable (nouveaux intervenants, nouveaux métiers, nouveaux modèles économiques.) et établit leurs relations avec les maillons traditionnels de la chaine d'étude. Ces mutations opérées au sein de la chaine d’étude sont analysées par le biais de retour d’expérience de plusieurs acteurs impliqués dans la construction durable en Région de Bruxelles Capitale. Un survol de différents aspects des chaines d'étude abordées dans le contexte des projets exemplaires en Région Bruxelles Capitale permet d'identifier l’apparition d’un échantillon de nouveaux maillons dans la chaine d'étude de la construction durable :A. les fabricants spécialisés d’ossatures bois et leurs cellules de recherche et de développement ou leurs bureaux d’études spécialisés associés, B. les professionnels spécialisés (dans le domaine de questions innovantes pointues), C. les bureaux d’études environnementaux, D. les réseaux et les filières, E. les nouveaux modèles économiques, F. les bureaux de contrôle spécialisés. D’une part, les études de cas analysées permettent de confronter ces hypothèses théoriques aux exemples pratiques et d'en extraire les points d'intérêt. D’autre part une exploration approfondie du maillon A et de ses relations avec les autres maillons, fait ressortir des pistes et des enjeux liés au contexte Bruxellois et aux tendances actuelles :• l’évolution de la formation, des connaissances et des métiers• les changements opérés dans le rôle des intervenants,• les changements opérés de l’écosystème professionnel, • l’appropriation des pratiques in, Dans le cadre de l’Alliance Emploi Environnement, Bruxelles Environnement (BE) a confié au centre de recherche Habiter de l’ULB la mise en place d’une cellule de recherche consacrée à identifier et diffuser les pratiques innovantes en construction durable à Bruxelles-Capitale, en particulier à partir de l’étude des bâtiments exemplaires « Batex », lauréats des appels à projets en construction durable lancés par BE depuis 2007.Le but de cette recherche vise à soutenir la diffusion des pratiques innovantes de construction vers les acteurs actifs dans le domaine de la construction durable en RBC. L’objet de la recherche consiste à partir des expériences de terrain disponibles en RBC pour documenter, analyser et évaluer ces pratiques innovantes dans les chantiers en cours de réalisation ou terminés. Cette remontée d’information sera structurée par la production périodique de rapports mis à disposition des acteurs et opérateurs du secteur. Est spécifiquement visé le transfert d’information vers les clusters (en particulier pour les TPE et PME), la formation et la recherche.
