This article investigates the dynamics of long-term gift exchange between British mothers and their adult daughters, delving into the processes behind dyadic gift giving. Through 54 comprehensive interviews, we elaborate the micropolitics that characterize these dynamics. Micropolitics refers to the subtle, everyday interactions, including gift exchange, that shape the ongoing negotiation of roles and the management of conflict or consensus within relationships. The study uncovers how these micropolitics manifest through four distinct processes of gift exchange: confirming, endorsing, connoting, and commanding. Gifts emerge as key instruments in this negotiation, serving as a medium for the reciprocal regulation of role behavior concerning gender, identity, and both endo-dyadic (within the dyad) and exo-dyadic (outside the dyad) roles. In contrast to previous research that adopts a synchronic (snapshot) approach to gift giving, our diachronic (over time) perspective emphasizes how power dynamics, intent, and identity politics evolve to sustain and transform relationships. Our findings illustrate the important communicative and power-laden processes of gift exchange in enduring relations, explaining why even unwanted gifts can have significant bonding value. A bankrupt buyer firm's interactions with its suppliers during bankruptcy have critical implications for both parties and for the broader economy, yet these interactions remain poorly understood. The authors build on research on buyer–supplier relationship dynamics to demonstrate that accommodative and exploitative velocities—the rate and direction of change in the corresponding acts—serve as signals affecting bankruptcy survival. They show how signal characteristics (i.e., the variability in accommodative and exploitative acts) and signaler characteristics (i.e., whether the party undertaking the acts is the buyer or its suppliers) moderate the impact of accommodative and exploitative velocities on bankruptcy survival. Study 1 examines the bankruptcy survival outcome of 310 U.S. bankruptcies over 14 years and finds that a 1% increase in accommodative (exploitative) velocity increases (decreases) the buyer's survival by 39% (33%). Further, variability in accommodative acts weakens their effect, and suppliers' (vs. the buyer's) accommodative and exploitative velocities are less deterministic of the buyer's bankruptcy survival. Study 2 uses a scenario-based experiment to shed light on the mechanism underlying the impact of the two velocities on bankruptcy survival. In this article, we advance a novel intra-individual conflict cognitive process framework, highlighting two structural elements of conflict experiences: (1) directions (sending vs. receiving) and (2) team boundaries (within team vs. between team). Integrating theorizing on cognitive resource allocation, we explain how and why the effect of individuals' conflict experiences on their task performances hinges upon their self-regulation of attention processes guided by the structural elements of conflict experiences. In Study 1, using data extracted from continuous audio and video streams of paramedics participating in live-actor mass-casualty response exercises, we found that sending within-team conflict and receiving between-team conflict related positively with task performance, whereas receiving within-team conflict related negatively to task performance. In Study 2, we conducted a mixed-design scenario-based experiment to examine the underlying mechanisms that drive such effects. Our findings reveal that on-task attentional pull was an important mechanism for a positive sending within-team conflict–task engagement relationship, whereas off-task attentional demands were driving the negative receiving within-team conflict–task engagement relationship. Collectively, we demonstrate that examining the intra-individual microfoundations of conflict in a multiteam context yields unique insights and enables building new theory on when and why conflict is beneficial or harmful. A fundamental organization design principle is to group interdependent roles into the same subunits to minimize coordination costs. However, observations in organizations, as well as theorizing in other subfields, such as corporate governance, indicate that interdependent roles sometimes perform conflicting functions, suggesting that they should be separated rather than integrated. Building on work in systems theory and axiomatic design theory, we discuss how to reconcile these two perspectives. Our key proposal is to distinguish between ends and means, or functions (e.g., goals or mandates) and structures (e.g., roles). This conceptualization makes it possible for two roles to be simultaneously interdependent in work processes yet conflicted in goals. Our framework leads to a modification of the traditional organization design principle of grouping based on interdependencies. It also suggests an alternative explanation for the division of labor within organizations: Organizations divide labor not only to capture gains from specialization but also to avoid functional conflict. Alliance partners must address goal conflicts to improve performance. Structural solutions to conflict emphasize alliance governance mechanisms like contracts, authority, and control structures, overlooking the role of individual actors and thus limiting our understanding of how alliance participants manage conflict. To address this, we introduce the concept of routine regulation and use the Fiat–Tata alliance to illustrate our insights and explore the microfoundations of organizational conflict through a process perspective, focusing on what participants actually do to balance goal conflicts. Consumption collectives manage conflict in various ways and socialise new consumers to ensure they participate in an appropriate manner. However, less is known about the new consumer experience within a conflict-ridden collective – particularly conflict arising from chronic and intensified anti-social practices. This study adopts a practice theory approach that combines interviews and netnography within the context of esports. Findings show a network of four practices that shape new consumer socialisation within a toxic consumption collective: learning, smurfing, scaffolding, and indoctrinating. While the practices of learning and scaffolding align new consumers into the required competencies of the collective, new consumers become embedded into a culture of negativity through the practices of smurfing and indoctrinating, through which toxicity becomes routinised. Overall, this network of practices shapes new consumer socialisation within online consumption collectives in both constructive and destructive ways. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to describe the experienced challenges of stakeholders in the implementation of school-based management (SBM) leadership and governance. The study employed a qualitative phenomenological research design. The participants of this study were the 9 stakeholders; 5 stakeholders underwent individual interview (IDI), while the other 4 underwent focused-group discussion (FGD). The study has three formulated themes which were the challenges, coping, and insights of stakeholders. The challenges of stakeholders in the implementation of school-based management (SBM) leadership and governance were able to formulate the following emergent themes: lack of support in SBM implementation, roles and involvement in SBM leadership, miscommunication, and initial expectations about SBM. Moreover, the coping mechanism of stakeholders in the implementation of school-based management (SBM) leadership and governance formulated the following emergent themes: conflict resolution within SBM framework, balancing SBM responsibilities with other obligations, innovative approaches to improve SBM processes, and seeking support and guidance during challenging times. The last formulated theme for the insights of stakeholders in the implementation of school-based management (SBM) leadership and governance had formulated the following emergent themes: transparency and communication within SBM, collaboration of stakeholders in SBM, and improvement of SBM. Peace education promotes the knowledge, skills and attitudes to help people prevent conflict occurring, resolve conflicts peacefully, or create conditions for peace. Thus, this study was conducted to determine the influence of knowledge on Peace Education to conflict resolution skills of the the Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao teachers of Cluster 3 schools, Department of Education, Division of Davao City. The descriptive-correlational research design under the quantitative research was used in the study. This design sought to find out the relationship between the teachers' knowledge on Peace Education and the teacher's conflict resolution skills. The first instrument used was a researcher made rating scale to determine the level of knowledge of the teachers on Peace Education. The second questionnaire was also self-assessment which was used to measure the conflict resolution skills of the teachers. The results showed that the knowledge on Peace Education was described as above average. On the other hand, the conflict resolution skills of the teachers were interpreted to be a high level. Moreover, data showed that there is a significant relationship between knowledge on Peace Education and conflict resolution skills of Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao teachers. Furthermore, results revealed that the indicators Cultivating Inner Peace, Promoting Human Rights and Responsibilities and Building Cultural Respect, Reconciliation and Solidarity significantly predict the conflict resolution skill of the teachers. The most controversial and basic construction in Dempster–Shafer theory is Dempster's combination rule. We analyze this concept through the conditioning with respect to a random set introduced in the paper. The paper has two parts. In Part 1, we describe the basic constructions in Dempster–Shafer theory considering multivalued mappings (random sets), the axiomatic approach proposed by G. Shafer, and the transferable belief model (TBM). We also introduce generalized credal sets as an extension of TBM and the theory of imprecise probabilities. After that, we introduce the conditioning w.r.t. a random set with various kinds of prior information and successive conditioning, and analyze, when this conditioning coincides with Dempster's rule. We show that the successive conditioning can be described by the intersection of generalized credal sets in the case of vacuous prior information and unknown interaction among random sets. Part 2 is devoted to the description of a new class of combination rules constructed by conditioning w.r.t. random sets, and by linear combinations of such rules. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Part 2 of this article is devoted to the analysis of a new class of combination rules on belief functions generated by conditioning w.r.t. random sets and their linear convex combinations. Each such rule obeys two requirements: the consensus requirement with the conjunction rule means that this rule coincides with Dempster's rule on non-conflicting sources of information, and the consensus requirement with a mixture rule means that the result must be a specialization of their mixture combination. We show that this new class of combination rules is closed under convex combinations of such rules and their compositions. This allows us to implement the conflict management using the introduced functionals for measuring the specialization relation on belief functions. We also introduce similar rules for idempotent combination rules on credal sets obeying the similar consensus requirements and study the results obtained using various examples. The study was focused on examining the legal status of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and determining its role in international relations within the OSCE region. The fact that this body is not part of the OSCE's intergovernmental system, but is an independent international entity actively involved in international affairs, gives this research a specific scientific nuance and significance. There are few scientific studies in the international doctrine dedicated to this topic, especially with an emphasis on its international legal issues. One of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly's priority areas is promoting peaceful conflict resolution through parliamentary diplomacy. However, parliamentary diplomacy, unlike traditional diplomacy, possesses unique characteristics and comparatively fewer opportunities for resolving serious international problems. Nevertheless, by enhancing the connectivity of the OSCE PA with the OSCE's intergovernmental bodies through the efforts of parliamentarians in this direction, in our opinion, it will be possible to significantly increase the OSCE PA's role in peaceful conflict resolution. The fact that parliamentarians are members of the legislative body and consequently participate in discussions and enactment of laws predetermines their role as qualified individuals who potentially can play a more significant role in the development of international law compared to professional diplo mats. Thus, the goal of this study is to explore the potential of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in peacefully resolving conflicts from the perspective of international law and international politics, and to identify negative factors that hinder the more productive activity of this parliamentary body. According to the research findings, the activities of parliamentarians within the OSCE PA can bring considerable benefits not only for the peaceful resolution of specific conflicts but also for the entire OSCE dispute settlement system through the development of carefully considered projects of international legal documents in this area. Conflicts tend to be complex and, in many cases, multi-faceted. However, by adapting an approach by Vuković, this study illustrates a method for structuring such conflicts, which can facilitate insights that are more profound by dividing them into relevant dimensions of the problem. Given that some conflicts are ongoing and new ones may emerge in certain cases, this study also assesses the potential of using the adapted methodology as a structured basis for constructing scenario analyses. In this study, two cases from Germany on the topic of water are analysed. The first case explores a pair of conflicts that arose within a short period involving a chemical company called Currenta. These conflicts are about a controversial wastewater discharge and an attempt to obtain more water rights, despite the possible future water stress. The second case concerns the Nordheide region, which is favoured for its groundwater reservoir. In recent decades, there has been a growing dispute between the water company and the residents of Nordheide about the possible harmful effects of further water extraction. Both cases illustrate the evolving nature of water conflicts, indicating that they can extend beyond a dispute over distribution. In addition to this key finding, the cases demonstrate the diverging concerns of the actors, as well as the significance of decision-makers involved in these conflicts. Introduction: The educational system in Costa Rica, as regulated by Law #7727, which governs Alternative Conflict Resolution and Promotion of Social Peace must consider the interplay of various factors influencing classroom conflicts and the management strategies employed by teachers. Consequently, it becomes imperative to identify the most effective conflict resolution practices applicable within this context. To achieve this, a thorough procedure based on mixed methods was employed to analyze and interpret both classroom conflict behaviors and teachers' strategic responses. Method: This study employed an indirect observational methodology, from a mixed methods approach. Data was collected through a focus group comprised of teachers. Following the connect framework, the procedure was conducted in three phases: QUAL-QUAN-QUAL. Two analytical techniques were implemented. A lag sequential analysis was used to explore potential behavioral patterns. The results of this analysis informed a polar coordinate analysis, which generated a visual representation of the relationships between codes. Results and discussion: A focus group addressed four questions, yielding satisfactory data quality control results (kappa values: 0.80, 0.77, 0.76, 0.82). In polar coordinate analysis, the 37 observational instrument categories were designated as focal behaviors. Each of the 37 analyses treated all categories as conditioned behaviors. The analysis identified 342 activation/inhibition relationships between focal and conditioned behaviors. Of these, 195 were statistically highly significant, distributed across quadrants: Quadrant I (106), Quadrant II (36), Quadrant III (16), Quadrant IV (36). Significant gaps in understanding of conflict were identified, along with disparities in the resources and competencies necessary for successful conflict resolution among the observed educators. Specifically, teachers frequently employed techniques informed by intuition rather than deliberate strategy learned in their training. Consequently, the study advocates for enhancing teachers' cognitive and emotional competencies to optimize conflict management within the classroom and bolster their adaptive coping mechanisms. Summary Many conservation problems remain intractable because of conflicting views between policymakers, managers, researchers, conservationists and community stakeholders. Novel approaches to resolving these conflicts are required to achieve conservation outcomes that are more broadly acceptable. The conservation and management of K'gari wongari (Fraser Island's Dingoes) is emblematic of such a situation. Here we describe the successful implementation of a novel approach to advancing one such formerly intractable issue – assessing the genetic health and status of the island's Dingoes to resolve latent conflicts and assist protected area managers with their conservation activities. We developed a participatory, independent approach centred on community workshops to identify research priorities, expert workshops to identify appropriate research methods, then the commissioning of independent scientific research to address community priorities in accordance with the experts' suggested methods. The overall aim of the project was to provide managers with robust and policy‐ready information on the genetic health and status of the Dingoes – information that also met community expectations and was widely supported by subject matter experts. The participatory approach of the project achieved this aim and was completed successfully and satisfactorily for all involved despite the occurrence of some expected challenges and necessary compromises. Here we describe the background to the problem, how the project was designed, the key challenges the project faced during implementation, and the key learnings from the exercise, thereby highlighting its innovative features as a participatory conflict resolution process. Background: Obsessive-compulsive (OC) traits (i.e., tendency to implement stereotyped behaviors to avoid negative consequences) are transversally observed in psychiatric disorders largely differing in terms of clinical manifestations and etiopathogenesis. Interestingly, OC traits were also extensively found in the prodromal phases of the full-blown psychopathology and in healthy relatives of affected individuals. Moreover, OC traits were found to be associated—and possibly underlain by—cognitive control impairments. Nonetheless, the role of such interplay in the onset of OC disorders is yet to be understood. We hypothesized that OC traits are associated with abnormalities in proactively implement cognitive control for solving conflict. Methods: We administered healthy individuals (n = 104) with the perifoveal spatial Stroop task to measure their ability of solving conflict in a proactive fashion, and with Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (OCI) to stratify population according to the severity of OC traits. Results: Analysis of response times by means of Linear Mixed-effect models revealed that proactive control performance was not associated with and the severity of OC traits. Furthermore, an equivalence test (Two One-Sided Test) revealed that the association between OCI scores and task performance was equivalent to zero. Conclusion: These results suggest that the interplay between OC traits and proactive control abnormalities might not contribute to the development of OC-related disorders. Therefore, the role of other cognitive endophenotypes should be scrutinized for exploiting alternative prevention and intervention strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The problem of the Israeli-Palestinian border occupies a special place among the multiple problems of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, given its direct connection to the results of the June 1967 war and the territorial ambitions it confirmed for Israel in the territories of the neighboring Arab countries in general and the Palestinian territories in particular, on the one hand, and its exposure of Israel’s evasions in not defining clear borders. Between it and the Palestinian side and recognition of the Palestinian state and its rights on the other hand. This research aims- through the descriptive and analytical approach - to trace the problem of the Israeli-Palestinian border by studying it according to the Israeli vision from its inception until its crystallization and development. The study does not stop at the reality of the problem in Israeli thought, but rather extends to examine and analyze the Israeli forward-looking vision for the future of the problem. This deepens our understanding of the Israeli side’s strategy in managing the conflict. The study was divided into two sections, preceded by an introduction, as follows: The first section is entitled: “The problem of the Israeli-Palestinian border in Israeli thought, concept, origin and development”. The second section is entitled: “Israel’s forward-looking vision for the future of the IsraeliPalestinian border”. The Arab-Israeli conflict is considered one of the longest and most difficult conflicts that the Middle East is still going through. After the October 6, 1973 war, which was a turning point in the Arab-Israeli conflict, countries and regular armies withdrew from the military conflict, and the resistance factions and various organizations took over the management of the conflict, opening the door to It is wide open to intermittent or fleeting wars raging on Palestinian land, between the Palestinians and the Israeli army. The images of these wars took different shapes. Because we are facing two different parties, a resistance and a regular army. The Women, Peace and Security resolutions have consistently called for women's increased participation at all levels in institutions and mechanisms for preventing, managing and resolving conflict. Despite a long history of feminist interventions to disrupt categories of gender as a stagnant, ahistorical or geographically consistent structure, rationales for women's inclusion continue to rest on problematic narratives and assumptions. We draw on twenty-nine interviews with practitioners whom we asked to speak about their experiences in peace negotiations and the expectations placed on women involved in these processes. The problematic narratives and assumptions we identify on the basis of these interviews and academic literature have the effect of diminishing women's agency and, thus, their ability to participate in peace negotiations on their terms. Women contribute positively to the durability of peace and the inclusion of gender provisions in agreements. Still, when women's identities are constructed as one-dimensional, the benefits of women's inclusion remain paradoxically a cause for celebration and a partial gain. In this article, we apply theories of intersectionality, informed by Black and African feminisms, to expose women's subject positions that may be made invisible because of assumptions that continue to be associated with calls for women's participation in peace negotiations. Human‐carnivore conflicts pose significant challenges in the management and conservation of carnivores across the globe. Abundant research has led to generalizable insights into the causes of such conflicts. For example, conflicts predictably occur when carnivores have access to human food resources, particularly when their natural foods are scarce. However, similar insights into the effectiveness of interventions aimed at coexistence remains comparatively scarce. We hypothesized that this disparity might be reflected in a bias toward research focused on causes of conflict rather than interventions to address it. To test our hypothesis, we evaluated the content of studies on human–carnivore conflicts and coexistence in Canada and the United States from 2010 to 2021. We found that studies disproportionately focused on causes of conflict, with that discrepancy increasing through our study period. We also found a disproportionate focus on black bears and wolves and western jurisdictions, and a disproportionate use of observational (vs. experimental) approaches. Studies on conflict interventions were primarily directed at the carnivores themselves (e.g., lethal approaches) versus human elements (e.g., attractant management, policies), despite evidence that the latter are more effective. We expect that a shift in focus toward solutions‐oriented research, integrating insights across geographies, taxa, social contexts, and disciplines, would facilitate effective interventions and foster coexistence, improving outcomes for people and carnivores alike. The European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) has developed evidence-based recommendations and expert opinions about end-of-life (EoL) and palliative care for critically ill adults to optimize patient-centered care, improving outcomes of relatives, and supporting intensive care unit (ICU) staff in delivering compassionate and effective EoL and palliative care. An international multi-disciplinary panel of clinical experts, a methodologist, and representatives of patients and families examined key domains, including variability across countries, decision-making, palliative-care integration, communication, family-centered care, and conflict management. Eight evidence-based recommendations (6 of low level of evidence and 2 of high level of evidence) and 19 expert opinions were presented. EoL legislation and the importance of respecting the autonomy and preferences of patients were given close attention. Differences in EoL care depending on country income and healthcare provision were considered. Structured EoL decision-making strategies are recommended to improve outcomes of patients and relatives, as well as staff satisfaction and mental health. Early integration of palliative care and the use of standardized tools for symptom assessment are suggested for patients at high risk of dying. Communication training for ICU staff and printed communication aids for families are advocated to improve outcomes and satisfaction. Methods for enhancing family-centeredness of care include structured family conferences and culturally sensitive interventions. Conflict-management protocols and strategies to prevent burnout among healthcare professionals are also considered. Although conflict issues – the stated goals of actors engaged in conflict – hold a privileged position in many theoretical explanations of the occurrence, dynamics, and resolution of civil war, global issue data are scarce beyond datasets that focus on specific thematic areas. This article aims to bring issues into the forefront of civil war scholarship by presenting the UCDP Conflict Issues Dataset (CID). This global yearly dataset contains 14,832 conflict issues – divided, at the most disaggregated level, into 120 sub-categories – raised by armed non-state groups involved in intrastate armed conflict in 1989-2017. By bringing issues back in, the UCDP CID provides opportunities to reevaluate several central questions about the onset, duration, intensity, and resolution of civil war. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Efficient responses in dynamic environments rely on a combination of readiness and flexibility, regulated by anticipatory and online response control mechanisms. The latter are required when a motor response needs to be reprogrammed or when flanker stimuli induce response conflict and they are crucially modulated by anticipatory signals such as response and conflict expectations. The mutual influence and interplay of these control processes remain to be elucidated. Our behavioral study employed a novel combined response cueing/conflict task designed to test for interactive effects of response reprogramming and conflict resolution and their modulation by expectations. To this end, valid and invalid response cues were combined with congruent and incongruent target flankers. Expectations were modulated by systematically manipulating the proportions of valid versus invalid cues and congruent versus incongruent flanker stimuli in different task blocks. Reaction time and accuracy were assessed in thirty-one healthy volunteers. The results revealed response reprogramming and conflict resolution interactions for both behavioral measures, modulated by response and conflict expectations. Accuracy decreased disproportionally when invalidly cued targets with incongruent flankers were least expected. AIM The aim of the study was to identify specific actionable behaviors academic nurse leaders can implement to improve nurse faculty job satisfaction. BACKGROUNDThe nurse faculty shortage is a persistent and worsening problem, with job dissatisfaction a significant contributor in the United States. However, little is known about actionable behaviors academic nurse leaders can do to improve nurse faculty job satisfaction. METHODQualitative semistructured interviews were conducted with 15 nurse faculty. Inductive thematic analysis was used to analyze and interpret the interviews. RESULTSFour themesemerged about academic nurse leader behavior: 1) build relationships with leaders and faculty, 2) create an environment where autonomy is valued, 3) facilitate faculty growth and development, and 4) serve as a role model. CONCLUSION Effective leadership contributes to nurse faculty job satisfaction. Academic deans in higher education can benefit from various types of mentoring to compensate for limited, formal administrative training. Using a nationally disseminated survey, we examined academic dean engagement with critical friends as one form of mentoring for their leadership development. The national survey included 27 items addressing deans' backgrounds, their critical friend engagement, and specific topics of consultation. Some 98 academic deans completed the electronic survey with a decided majority reporting that they consulted with critical friends inside and outside their institutions. Critical friends most often tended to be assistant/associate deans, dean colleagues, department chairs, Provosts/CAOs, and significant others. Prior deans, White deans, and deans at institutions with several schools/colleges engaged critical friends more frequently. The predominant topics of discussion with critical friends were personnel issues, contentious colleagues, conflict resolution, and feelings about their jobs. Aim(s): To identify and synthesize evidence available on nurse leaders' interpersonal communication competence. Design: Systematic mixed‐methods review according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analysis checklist. Methods: The data were collected following predefined inclusion criteria. Two authors independently performed the study selection using Covidence software. Three authors assessed the quality using Joanna Briggs' Institute's critical appraisal tool and the mixed‐methods appraisal tool. The data‐based convergent synthesis design and narrative synthesis were used. Data Sources: CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus, Business Source Elite, Academic Search Premier, Communication & Mass Media Complete, PsycInfo, Web of Sciences, Medic and Finna.fi were searched and the screening of citations in relevant articles. The final searches were performed on 17 October 2022. Results: A total of 26 studies—15 quantitative, 9 qualitative and 1 of both mixed‐method and multi‐method—met the inclusion criteria. The nurse leaders' interpersonal communication competences described in the extant literature were categorized into three themes: message competence, relational competence and task competence. There were considerable differences in the levels of competence, as some competences were considered basic communication skills, while others required more advanced level competences. Furthermore, three competence levels were identified: novice, competent and expert. Conclusions: This study unravels a unique hierarchical description of communication skills across competence categories, supported by the assumption that communication skills are structured hierarchically. The studies reviewed herein had a narrow perception of nurse leaders' interpersonal communication competence and indicated a transmissional understanding of communication. Impact: This is the first mixed‐methods systematic review that describes and synthesizes the evidence on nurse leaders' communication competencies hierarchically and across competence levels. The study suggests that further research should focus on a broader and more analytical understanding of the cognitive and affective aspects of interpersonal communication competence. In contrast to descriptions of Japan as a country that shied away from involvement in international political affairs during the Cold War, this article shows that since the 1960s, Japan has actively engaged in diplomacy to resolve conflicts in Southeast Asia. What motivated these efforts? What role did Japan play? What are the characteristics of Japan's diplomacy? Drawing on declassified diplomatic documents, these questions are addressed by investigating Japan's peace brokering in four conflicts during the Cold War era. The findings deepen our understanding of Japan's contribution to conflict-resolution and its political role in Southeast Asia during the Cold War, which was much more active than claimed in the literature. We explore the use of experts in arbitration proceedings by analysing public procurement contract disputes in Italy. Balancing cost with accuracy, participants to a contract select arbitration when speedy dispute resolution is valued highly. Alternative dispute resolution mechanisms tend to give appointed arbitrators discretion in how to proceed. Consequently, principal‐agent problems can arise. Using an inverse‐probability‐weighted approach, we show that the use of an expert causes a slowing down of the case resolution, without having an effect on the outcome of the dispute nor resolving uncertainty as measured by unanimous decisions by the panel of arbitrators. Population movements were a regular feature in Iberia across the medieval period, especially due to the conflicts for land control between the northern Christian states and Islamic powers in the south. Movements of Muslim populations caused by the Christian expansion rose sharply from the eleventh century and peaked over the following two centuries. Drawing on the Arabic sources, this article explores how, when, and where the Muslims had to leave their homelands following the arrival of Christian conquerors. While documentary information is scarce and lacking in detail, these sources are key to understanding the real demographic impact caused by the expansion of Christian kingdoms into Islamic territory in Iberia across the eleventh through thirteenth centuries. Nigeria faces significant challenges related to violence, conflict, and social unrest, often stemming from ethnic, religious, and political differences. The escalation of violence and its consequences pose severe threats to the stability, development, and overall well-being of the nation. Traditional approaches to conflict resolution and peace-building have often been inadequate in addressing these deep-rooted issues. In light of these challenges, there is a need to explore alternative models of peace-building that are rooted in nonviolence and draw inspiration from the principles outlined in the New Testament. This article adopted a theological method in this research. The study examines the theoretical foundations of nonviolence as espoused in the New Testament scriptures and analyzes its relevance to contemporary peacebuilding efforts. By delving into the principles of love, forgiveness, and reconciliation advocated in the New Testament, the paper presents a compelling argument for the adoption of nonviolence as a practical and ethical framework for peace-building in Nigeria. In conclusion, this paper asserts that embracing the New Testament model of nonviolence can significantly contribute to transforming the culture of violence in Nigeria and beyond Africa. The reality of the democratization of various African states in the 1990s has often failed to match the promise of democracy. Disputes over electoral outcomes have been commonplace, often resulting violence and social unrest. Such disputes point to possible limitations of the capacity of formal institutions such as the electoral commissions (and its associated electoral laws) and the judiciary to ensuring their peaceful resolution even where there may be no actual large-scale electoral violence. This paper examines the 2012 presidential election in Ghana. It argues that in addition to these institutional mechanisms there is an important role played by the traditional authorities exercise of informal conflict resolution strategies and the positive values in the (political) culture. Drawing on reports of journalists, the views of politicians and judicial records the paper shows how the preventive mediation of traditional authorities helped to defuse tensions and prevented a potentially violent situation during the electoral process and its disputed outcomes. In this respect, this article approaches the spiritual and political dimensions of the Arhuaco People's justice system to examine its procedures and sanctions. We want to understand how the Arhuaco People administer justice in cases where male community members are allegedly responsible for committing sexual crimes against women. The study examines the impact of middle leaders' cognitive complexity (CC) on team performance and conflict management, focusing on their positive perception of diversity. This study is quantitative; the Person's R test was used. The proposed model was examined using (ML-SEM) equation modeling in the M-Plus program. To determine whether the model fits, I used the fit indices of comparative fit index (CFI) and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA). A fit index of more than.90 and RMSEA of less than.10 indicates adequate validity. Aggregation was conducted to address conflict and performance at the school level, within-group interrater agreement (rWG), and intraclass correlations (ICCs): ICC1, ICC2. ICC1 examines the within-group variance by answering the question: To what extent can variability measures be predicted from team membership? ICC2 examines the between-group variance by answering the question: How reliable are the team means within a sample? The data comprised 71 middle leaders who constituted 71 teams and 228 team members with a minimum of 3 teachers in each team (according to the G*Power program) from 12 Israeli schools. Results showed that middle leaders' CC affects team performance through its effect on their positive perception of the diversity of their team members. Further, the diversity perception of middle leaders was negatively related to teachers' perceptions of conflict (relation conflict and process conflict). Conflict in teams was not related to performance. The current study can enhance school management strategies by promoting diversity and heterogeneity among middle leaders, thereby improving decision-making and performance outcomes. To create a framework encompassing a broad spectrum of police communication skills, our study utilized the Communicative Function Questionnaire, a validated tool from communication studies. Two cross-sectional surveys with 627 participants in China assessed the perceived importance of eight communication skills in police–civilian interactions. Study 1 indicated potential undervaluation of skills by police compared with civilians, although both groups rated them as moderately important or higher. Study 2 categorized police communication skills into two categories: functional (referential, regulative, conflict management) and relational (comforting, ego support, conversational, persuasive, narrative), with civilians favoring functional skills. Furthermore, our investigation into demographic influences on the evaluation of relational skills revealed that any of the following groups: men, individuals over 25, or residents of certain regions, placed a higher value on relational skills. \nHighlightsThe aim of this study is to examine the mediating role of emotion regulation difficulties in the relationship between conflict resolution styles and marital satisfaction in married individuals. A total of 706 married individuals, 234 men and 472 women, constitute the study’s working group. The ages of the participants ranged from 21 to 60, with an average age of 38.45. As a result of the analysis conducted within the scope of the study It has been found that positive conflict resolution, retreat and subordination conflict resolution styles are positively related with marriage satisfaction, while negative conflict resolution styles are negatively related with marriage satisfaction. Why do civilians engage in Civilian Defence Forces (CDFs) to confront insurgents if it is more dangerous than pacific resistance? This paper addresses two cases of peasant-centric CDFs in southern Tolima, Colombia. Based on secondary sources and interviews, a rich historical account of the CDFs is presented, allowing the application of process tracing for analysis. A framework to explain CDFs, recognising the interweaving of local security dilemmas and the macro-cleavage of the civil war, is proposed. Three determinants were found: previous participation of civilians in organised violence, legitimation of violent responses and the cooptation of community conflict resolution institutions. Following the killing of George Floyd, some congregations more fully entered the conversation on race. Although sometimes reinforcing institutional racism, many religious traditions also have tools for conflict resolution, repentance, and reconciliation. Given this ambivalence, how do congregations engage questions of racial justice, and how is this engagement influenced by race and religious tradition? Our answers come through multimethod data collected over 2 years: (a) Surveys of 2,293 congregants from 35 diverse congregations find that race relations is the issue they most want their place of worship to address, while revealing exhaustion among some Black members; (b) 90 sermons from 15 congregations reveal how clergy talked about race in the weeks after Floyd's murder depended largely on the race of the congregation; and (c) 21 clergy interviews illustrate differences in how clergy use religion to engage race. Purpose: The prevalence of armed conflicts in Africa seems commonplace, with little possibility to their end. This study aims to challenge a narrative that seem to consider ethnicity, or ethnic differences as the main causes of armed civil conflicts in Africa. This study argues that while ethnicity might play a role in conflict formation, ethnicity is simply a Trojan horse that is impishly presented as the main cause of armed conflicts in Africa.Design/Methodology: Data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. To evaluate the ethnicity vs. conflict nexus more conscientiously, this study provided two case examples: Ethiopia and Kenya, each providing distinct political trajectories.Findings: The study finds that ethnicity is not the main cause of armed conflicts in Africa; rather, the main causal factors are embedded in bad governance practices by political elites and their cronies. Notable is the practice of politics of power grab and marginalisation of certain groups to achieve Machiavellian ends. The additional causal factor is tied to external imperial exploitative motives of looting Africa’s natural resources, often using African puppets, bagmen and traitors of their own homeland. Thus, a combination of bad local governance practices and external economic interests is mainly what has led to a surge in armed civil conflicts in Africa.Originality/Value: The novelty of this study is that it challenges conventional political standpoints on the causes of ethnic-related conflicts and the solutions needed to end/reduce them. The study has achieved this by pushing the cloak of appreciating the scope and scale of Africa’s armed conflicts by advancing the argument that conflict management solutions lie inward rather than outward through the utilisation of local or homegrown conflict resolution mechanisms. Such local mechanisms must focus on addressing bad governance practices. The current penchant of relying on international or foreign mediatory systems as solutions is done merely at the behest of global politicking and, as such, only provides cosmetic solutions, hence themselves responsible for those protracted ethnic-related conflicts. ABSTRACT Religious institutions have an organic role to play in conflict resolution. This study examines the role of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church in resolving recent conflicts in Ethiopia on the basis of data from the Amhara regional state. The study used a qualitative research methodology. Focus group discussions and semi‐structured interviews with key informants were used to gather data. Participants were selected from various dioceses and the Amhara police commission, including representatives from the Council of Religious Institutions in the Amhara region, church officials, priests, academics and police officers, on the basis of their experience, knowledge and proximity to the issues. Thus, the study assesses the church's role in conflict resolution, the methods used, and the challenges the church has encountered in its efforts. The findings show that throughout its lengthy history, the church has made a beneficial, all‐encompassing contribution to conflict resolution, and it is recognized in the community for now serving this purpose. Apart from settling inter‐group and personal disputes, the church has also attempted to mediate between armed groups and the government in some parts of the regional state. The study argues that, despite continuing to work towards some success, the church has become less effective at settling political conflicts. To foster pathways for lasting peace, this calls for strengthening the Church's position as a traditional conflict resolution institution among the relevant stakeholders and safeguarding its established methods and authority from being undermined by unwarranted intervention from the government and other disputing parties. Introduction: The educational system in Costa Rica, as regulated by Law #7727, which governs Alternative Conflict Resolution and Promotion of Social Peace must consider the interplay of various factors influencing classroom conflicts and the management strategies employed by teachers. Consequently, it becomes imperative to identify the most effective conflict resolution practices applicable within this context. To achieve this, a thorough procedure based on mixed methods was employed to analyze and interpret both classroom conflict behaviors and teachers' strategic responses. Method: This study employed an indirect observational methodology, from a mixed methods approach. Data was collected through a focus group comprised of teachers. Following the connect framework, the procedure was conducted in three phases: QUAL-QUAN-QUAL. Two analytical techniques were implemented. A lag sequential analysis was used to explore potential behavioral patterns. The results of this analysis informed a polar coordinate analysis, which generated a visual representation of the relationships between codes. Results and discussion: A focus group addressed four questions, yielding satisfactory data quality control results (kappa values: 0.80, 0.77, 0.76, 0.82). In polar coordinate analysis, the 37 observational instrument categories were designated as focal behaviors. Each of the 37 analyses treated all categories as conditioned behaviors. The analysis identified 342 activation/inhibition relationships between focal and conditioned behaviors. Of these, 195 were statistically highly significant, distributed across quadrants: Quadrant I (106), Quadrant II (36), Quadrant III (16), Quadrant IV (36). Significant gaps in understanding of conflict were identified, along with disparities in the resources and competencies necessary for successful conflict resolution among the observed educators. Specifically, teachers frequently employed techniques informed by intuition rather than deliberate strategy learned in their training. Consequently, the study advocates for enhancing teachers' cognitive and emotional competencies to optimize conflict management within the classroom and bolster their adaptive coping mechanisms. Deception, a complex aspect of human behavior, is inherently difficult to detect directly. A valid alternative involves memory detection, particularly through methods such as the Reaction-Time based Concealed Information Test (RT-CIT). The RT-CIT assesses whether an individual possesses specific knowledge by presenting various probe (familiar) items amidst irrelevant (unfamiliar) items. The task-required "unfamiliar" response to probes may induce a response conflict. Resolving this conflict, by inhibiting the automatic "familiar" response, takes time and slows probe RTs–a phenomenon known as the RT-CIT effect. Notably, secondary psychopathy is characterized by disinhibition and impulsivity, traits which may hinder the ability to effectively manage experienced conflict. Therefore, we hypothesized that secondary psychopathy would be associated with an elevated RT-CIT effect. To investigate this hypothesized relation, we conducted a pre-registered study (n = 86, student sample), employing a novel CIT paradigm that incorporates no-go trials to assess response inhibition capacity. Psychopathic traits were measured using the Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy (LSRP) scale, while the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) assessed impulsivity. The novel CIT paradigm revealed impressive detection efficiency. However, contrary to our expectations, we observed no significant correlation between the RT-CIT effect and secondary psychopathic traits (BF01 = 6.98). This cautiously suggests that while secondary psychopathic tendencies do not improve RT-CIT validity, they also do not compromise it. Although future investigations should explore more diverse contexts and populations, this tentative finding is reassuring and underscores the robustness of the CIT paradigm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Collaborative conservation interventions based on engagement with local communities are increasingly common, especially for large carnivores that negatively impact people's livelihoods and well‐being. However, evaluating the effectiveness of large‐scale community‐based conservation interventions is rarely done, making it problematic to assess or justify their impact. In our study focused on snow leopards (Panthera uncia) in five countries, we show that bespoke and well‐implemented community‐based and conflict management intervention efforts can lead to more sustainable conservation outcomes. Collaborative interventions, spread over about 88,000 km2 of snow leopard habitat, reduced livestock depredation and disease and associated economic costs. Additionally, they generated conservation‐linked livelihoods and enhanced community decision‐making, leading to more positive behavioral intent toward snow leopards and improved communities’ cooperation, economic security, and confidence. Our results provide lessons learned and recommendations for practitioners and governments to alleviate conflicts and foster coexistence with snow leopards and large carnivores more broadly. These include prioritizing locally led tailored solutions based on the PARTNERS principles, recognizing local community rights in conservation decision‐making, and recognizing the role of social norms in ensuring accountability. In the Graph Model for Conflict Resolution (GMCR), conflicts are analyzed as in a chess game foreseeing a sequence of moves and countermoves, where the length of this sequence is known as the conflict horizon. In the literature, the stability concepts mostly used are with a fixed horizon, but there are concepts that accommodate a variable horizon. Although these latter concepts have a higher flexibility, they are not applied very frequently perhaps because their properties are not so well understood. In this article, our objective is to shed some light in three stability concepts with variable horizon: limited move, generalized metarationality stabilities and policy equilibrium in bilateral conflicts. In particular, we present some existing inaccuracies in the literature of the GMCR, regarding these concepts. First, we observed that the state anticipated by the focal decision maker (DM) in the limited move stability is not necessarily unique when both the focal DM and his/her opponent move seeking to maximize their respective gains and the focal DM knows his/her opponent's preferences. Next, we present a counterexample to a result in the literature that relates generalized metarationalities and policy equilibria. The N-Queens problem is a fundamental challenge in combinatorial optimization, commonly used as a benchmark for assessing the efficiency of algorithms. Traditional algorithms, such as Backtracking with Forward Checking (BFC), constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) techniques, Lookahead algorithms, and heuristic-based methods, often face challenges with exponential time complexity, making them less practical for large-scale instances. This paper introduces a novel algorithm, non-sequential conflict resolution (NSCR), which improves performance over traditional algorithms through dynamic conflict resolution. The NSCR algorithm iteratively resolves conflicts among queens by adjusting their positions, aiming to optimize both time complexity and memory usage. While NSCR also operates within exponential time bounds, it demonstrates improved scalability and efficiency compared to traditional methods. A significant strength of the NSCR algorithm lies in its space complexity, which is O(n), and a time complexity that, while typically lower than traditional methods, can reach O(n3) in the worst-case scenario. This linear space complexity is highly advantageous, particularly when dealing with large problem sizes, as it ensures efficient use of memory resources. Comparative analysis with the aforementioned algorithms shows that NSCR offers superior resource management, using up to 60% less memory and reducing runtime by approximately 50%, making it an efficient option for large-scale instances of the N-Queens problem. The algorithm's performance, evaluated on problem sizes ranging from 8 to 1000 queens, highlights its ability to manage computational resources effectively, despite the inherent challenges of exponential time complexity. This article argues that the international institutions in which negotiations have often taken place have been challenged by increased conflict among member states in the early 21st century. Multilateral international institutions function best when common interests are viewed as paramount by the state parties, because they allow the state parties to negotiate structures and processes that serve their shared interests and values. The paper analyzes the difficulties in managing international conflicts in the UN, osce, nato, and EU since 2000 due in part to the inability to achieve consensus within fractured and stalemated institutions. These problems have increasingly limited the role of these institutions in managing some of the most dangerous global conflicts, including on arms control and disarmament and managing the Russian war in Ukraine.
