Numerous methods and pipelines have recently emerged for the automatic extraction of knowledge graphs from documents such as scientific publications and patents. However, adapting these methods to incorporate alternative text sources like micro-blogging posts and news has proven challenging as they struggle to model open-domain entities and relations, typically found in these sources. In this paper, we propose an enhanced information extraction pipeline tailored to the extraction of a knowledge graph comprising open-domain entities from micro-blogging posts on social media platforms. Our pipeline leverages dependency parsing and classifies entity relations in an unsupervised manner through hierarchical clustering over word embeddings. We provide a use case on extracting semantic triples from a corpus of 100 thousand tweets about digital transformation and publicly release the generated knowledge graph. On the same dataset, we conduct two experimental evaluations, showing that the system produces triples with precision over 95% and outperforms similar pipelines of around 5% in terms of precision, while generating a comparatively higher number of triples., Comment: 42 pages, 6 figures

This paper presents a novel approach to epidemic surveillance, leveraging the power of Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models (LLMs) for effective interpretation of unstructured big data sources, like the popular ProMED and WHO Disease Outbreak News. We explore several LLMs, evaluating their capabilities in extracting valuable epidemic information. We further enhance the capabilities of the LLMs using in-context learning, and test the performance of an ensemble model incorporating multiple open-source LLMs. The findings indicate that LLMs can significantly enhance the accuracy and timeliness of epidemic modelling and forecasting, offering a promising tool for managing future pandemic events., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, Ninth International Congress on Information and Communication Technology (ICICT 2024)

Knowledge graphs (KGs) have been successfully applied to the analysis of complex scientific and technological domains, with automatic KG generation methods typically building upon relation extraction models capturing fine-grained relations between domain entities in text. While these relations are fully applicable across scientific areas, existing models are trained on few domain-specific datasets such as SciERC and do not perform well on new target domains. In this paper, we experiment with leveraging in-context learning capabilities of Large Language Models to perform schema-constrained data annotation, collecting in-domain training instances for a Transformer-based relation extraction model deployed on titles and abstracts of research papers in the Architecture, Construction, Engineering and Operations (AECO) domain. By assessing the performance gain with respect to a baseline Deep Learning architecture trained on off-domain data, we show that by using a few-shot learning strategy with structured prompts and only minimal expert annotation the presented approach can potentially support domain adaptation of a science KG generation model.

Extracting social determinants of health (SDoH) from unstructured medical notes depends heavily on labor-intensive annotations, which are typically task-specific, hampering reusability and limiting sharing. In this study we introduced SDoH-GPT, a simple and effective few-shot Large Language Model (LLM) method leveraging contrastive examples and concise instructions to extract SDoH without relying on extensive medical annotations or costly human intervention. It achieved tenfold and twentyfold reductions in time and cost respectively, and superior consistency with human annotators measured by Cohen's kappa of up to 0.92. The innovative combination of SDoH-GPT and XGBoost leverages the strengths of both, ensuring high accuracy and computational efficiency while consistently maintaining 0.90+ AUROC scores. Testing across three distinct datasets has confirmed its robustness and accuracy. This study highlights the potential of leveraging LLMs to revolutionize medical note classification, demonstrating their capability to achieve highly accurate classifications with significantly reduced time and cost.

The moral value of liberty is a central concept in our inference system when it comes to taking a stance towards controversial social issues such as vaccine hesitancy, climate change, or the right to abortion. Here, we propose a novel Liberty lexicon evaluated on more than 3,000 manually annotated data both in in- and out-of-domain scenarios. As a result of this evaluation, we produce a combined lexicon that constitutes the main outcome of this work. This final lexicon incorporates information from an ensemble of lexicons that have been generated using word embedding similarity (WE) and compositional semantics (CS). Our key contributions include enriching the liberty annotations, developing a robust liberty lexicon for broader application, and revealing the complexity of expressions related to liberty across different platforms. Through the evaluation, we show that the difficulty of the task calls for designing approaches that combine knowledge, in an effort of improving the representations of learning systems.

As an alternative to the metastability of the electroweak vacuum, resulting from perturbative calculations, one can consider a non-perturbative effective potential which, as at the beginning of the Standard Model, is restricted to the pure $\Phi^4$ sector yet consistent with the known analytical and numerical studies. In this approach, where the electroweak vacuum is now the lowest-energy state, besides the resonance of mass $m_h=$ 125 GeV defined by the quadratic shape of the potential at its minimum, the Higgs field should exhibit a second resonance with mass $(M_H)^{\rm Theor}=690\,(30)$ GeV associated with the zero-point energy determining the potential depth. In spite of its large mass, this resonance would couple to longitudinal $W$s with the same typical strength as the low-mass state at 125 GeV and represent a relatively narrow resonance, mainly produced at LHC by gluon-gluon fusion. We present a theoretical model of electromagnetic pulse emission and nozzle damage from high-power laser interactions with gas jets. As hot electrons are accelerated beyond the laser channel, they produce a positively-charged plasma that expands into the ambient gas until it reaches the gas jet nozzle. A strong plasma potential leads to electrical breakdown that ionises the gas even faster than the expanding plasma ions. When contact is made between the plasma and the conducting nozzle surface, a discharge current propagates to ground and an electromagnetic pulse is radiated via an antenna emission mechanism. Damage to gas jet nozzles is caused by heating from plasma ions rather than Ohmic heating via a discharge current. Altermagnetism, a type of magnetic order that combines properties of ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, has generated significant interest recently, in particular due to its potential spintronics applications. Here, we show that altermagnetic states, which typically involve collinear magnetic order of SU(2) spins, can be generalized to higher SU($N$) symmetry groups. We construct a two-dimensional Heisenberg model for a three-sublattice SU(3) altermagnet and analyze its excitation spectrum via flavor-wave theory. By deriving a general formula for the chirality of the excitations, we show that the SU(3) altermagnet harbors chiral magnons that are split in energy. We also compute the electronic band structure for a metallic system of the same symmetry and map out the polarization of the resulting flavor-split bands. Quantum nonlocality would naturally fit into a version of relativity with a preferred reference system. However, acceptance of this idea has traditionally required experimental evidence. Namely, detecting in laboratory a small angular dependence of the velocity of light correlated to the cosmic motion of the Earth. Here, we summarize a new theoretical framework where the tiny, irregular residuals observed so far, from Michelson-Morley to current experiments of laser interferometry, can indeed be understood in terms of the Earth motion in the Cosmic Microwave Background observed directly with satellites in space. Cultural gems is a web application conceived by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (DG JRC), which aims at engaging people and organisations across Europe to create a unique repository of cultural and creative places. The main goal is to provide a vision of European culture in order to strengthen a sense of identity within a single European cultural realm. Cultural gems maps more than 130,000 physical places in over 300 European cities and towns, and since 2020 it also lists online cultural initiatives. The new release aims, among other, to increase the interoperability of the application. At this purpose, we provide an overview on the current development of an ontology for Cultural gems used to map cultural heritage in European cities by using Linked Open Data (LOD) standards, and making the data FAIR, that is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. After decades of improvements in the employment conditions of females in Spain, this process came to a sudden stop with the Great Spanish Recession of 2008. In this contribution, we analyse a large longitudinal corpus of national and regional news outlets employing advanced Natural Language Processing techniques to capture the valence of mentions of gender inequality expressed in the Spanish press. The automatic analysis of the news articles does indeed capture the known hardships faced by females in the Spanish labour market. Our approach can be straightforwardly generalised to other topics of interest. Assessing the sentiment and moral values expressed in the articles, we notice that females are, in the majority of cases, concerned more than males when there is a deterioration in the overall labour market conditions, based on newspaper articles. This behaviour has been present in the entire period of study (2000--2022) and looked particularly pronounced during the economic crisis of 2008 and the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the time, this phenomenon looks to be more pronounced at the regional level, perhaps caused by a significant focus on local labour markets rather than on aggregate statistics or because, in local contexts, females might suffer more from an isolation or discrimination condition. The recovery and resilience of the cultural and creative sectors after the COVID-19 pandemic is a current topic with priority for the European Commission. Cultural gems is a crowdsourced web platform managed by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission aimed at creating community-led maps as well as a common repository for cultural and creative places across European cities and towns. More than 130,000 physical locations and online cultural activities in more than 300 European cities and towns are currently tracked by the application. The main objective of Cultural gems consists in raising a holistic vision of European culture, reinforcing a sense of belonging to a common European cultural space. This data article describes the ontology developed for Cultural gems, adopted to represent the domain of knowledge of the application by means of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles and following the paradigms of Linked Open Data (LOD). Laser technologies improved after the understanding of the Chirped Pulse Amplification (CPA) which allows energetic laser beams to be compressed to tens of femtosecond (fs) pulse durations and focused to few $\mu$m. Protons of tens of MeV can be accelerated using for instance the Target Normal Sheath Acceleration (TNSA) method and focused on secondary targets. In such conditions, nuclear reactions can occur and radioisotopes relevant for medical purposes be produced. High repetition lasers can be used to produce enough isotopes for medical applications. This route is competitive to conventional methods mostly based on accelerators. In this paper we study the production of $^{67}$Cu, $^{63}$Zn, $^{18}$F and $^{11}$C currently used in positron emission tomography (PET) and other applications. At the same time, we study the reaction $^{10}$B(p,$\alpha$)$^{7}$Be and $^{70}$Zn(p,4n)$^{67}$Ga to put further constraints to the proton distributions at different angles and to the reaction $^{11}$B(p,$\alpha$)$^{8}$Be relevant for energy production. The experiment was performed at the 1 petawatt (PW) laser facility at Vega III located in Salamanca-Spain. Angular distributions of radioisotopes in the forward (with respect to the laser direction) and backward directions were measured using a High Purity Germanium Detector (HPGE). Our results are reasonably reproduced by the numerical estimates following the approach of Kimura et al. (NIMA637(2011)167)

In the context of our research activities on affective computing and human-robot interaction we are working on both the recognition of human's emotions and the expression of emotions by robots. In our vision, robots will be increasingly present in schools, factories, and homes, and their empathetic behavior may foster their acceptance. In particular, in one of our research, we sought to replicate gestures associated with specific emotions on a social robot, NAO. Our focus was on Ekman's six primary emotions, along with five emotions selected from Plutchik's wheel of emotions. In our opinion the cultural component linked to the expression of emotions through gestures certainly influenced both us and the participants. Ion acceleration from gaseous targets driven by relativistic-intensity lasers was demonstrated as early as the late 90s, yet most of the experiments conducted to date have involved picosecond-duration, Nd:glass lasers operating at low repetition rate. Here, we present measurements on the interaction of ultraintense ($\sim 10^{20}\,\rm W\,cm^{-2}$, 1 PW), ultrashort ($\sim 70\,\rm fs$) Ti:Sa laser pulses with near-critical ($\sim 10^{20}\,\rm cm^{-3}$) helium gas jets, a debris-free targetry compatible with high ($\sim 1\,\rm Hz$) repetition rate operation. We provide evidence of $\alpha$ particles being forward accelerated up to $\sim 2.7\,\rm MeV$ energy with a total flux of $\sim 10^{11}\,\rm sr^{-1}$ as integrated over $>0.1 \,\rm MeV$ energies and detected within a $0.5\,\rm mrad$ solid angle. We also report on on-axis emission of relativistic electrons with an exponentially decaying spectrum characterized by a $\sim 10\,\rm MeV$ slope, i.e., five times larger than the standard ponderomotive scaling. The total charge of these electrons with energy above 2 MeV is estimated to be of $\sim 1 \,\rm nC$, corresponding to $\sim 0.1\,\%$ of the laser drive energy. In addition, we observe the formation of a plasma channel, extending longitudinally across the gas density maximum and expanding radially with time. These results are well captured by large-scale particle-in-cell simulations, which reveal that the detected fast ions most likely originate from reflection off the rapidly expanding channel walls. The latter process is predicted to yield ion energies in the MeV range, which compare well with the measurements. Finally, direct laser acceleration is shown to be the dominant mechanism behind the observed electron energization.

Spiral spin liquids are correlated states of matter in which a frustrated magnetic system evades order by fluctuating between a set of (nearly) degenerate spin spirals. Here, we investigate the response of spiral spin liquids to quenched disorder in a $J_1$-$J_2$ honeycomb-lattice Heisenberg model. At the single-impurity level, we identify different order-by-quenched-disorder phenomena and analyze the ensuing spin textures. In particular, we show that the latter generally display Friedel-like oscillations, which encode direct information about the spiral contour, i.e., the classical ground-state manifold. At finite defect concentrations, we perform extensive numerical simulations and characterize the resulting phases at zero temperature. As a result, we find that the competition between incompatible order-by-quenched-disorder mechanisms can lead to spiral spin glass states already at low to moderate disorder. We recently proposed a new technique of plasma tailoring by laser-driven hydrodynamic shockwaves generated on both sides of a gas jet [J.-R. Marqu\`es et al., Phys. Plasmas 28, 023103 (2021)]. In the continuation of this numerical work, we studied experimentally the influence of the tailoring on proton acceleration driven by a high-intensity picosecond-laser, in three cases: without tailoring, by tailoring only the entrance side of the ps-laser, or both sides of the gas jet. Without tailoring the acceleration is transverse to the laser axis, with a low-energy exponential spectrum, produced by Coulomb explosion. When the front side of the gas jet is tailored, a forward acceleration appears, that is significantly enhanced when both the front and back sides of the plasma are tailored. This forward acceleration produces higher energy protons, with a peaked spectrum, and is in good agreement with the mechanism of Collisionless Shock Acceleration (CSA). The spatio-temporal evolution of the plasma profile was characterized by optical shadowgraphy of a probe beam. The refraction and absorption of this beam was simulated by post-processing 3D hydrodynamic simulations of the plasma tailoring. Comparison with the experimental results allowed to estimate the thickness and near-critical density of the plasma slab produced by tailoring both sides of the gas jet. These parameters are in good agreement with those required for CSA.

Perturbative calculations predict that the Standard Model (SM) effective potential should have a new minimum, well beyond the Planck scale, much deeper than the electroweak vacuum. As it is not obvious that gravitational effects can get so strong to stabilize the potential, most authors have accepted the metastability scenario in a cosmological perspective. This perspective is needed to explain why the theory remains trapped into our electroweak vacuum, but requires to control the properties of matter in the extreme conditions of the early universe. Alternatively, one can consider the completely different idea of a non-perturbative effective potential which, as at the beginning of the SM, is restricted to the pure $\Phi^4$ sector yet consistent with the now existing analytical and numerical studies. In this approach, where the electroweak vacuum is the lowest-energy state, besides the resonance of mass $m_h=125$ GeV defined by the quadratic shape of the potential at its minimum, the Higgs field should exhibit a second resonance with mass $690\pm10({\rm stat})\pm20({\rm sys})$ GeV associated with the zero-point energy determining the potential depth. Despite its large mass, this would couple to longitudinal $W$s with the same typical strength as the low-mass state at 125 GeV and represent a relatively narrow resonance of width $\Gamma_H=30\div 38$ GeV, mainly produced at LHC by gluon-gluon fusion. So it is interesting that, in the LHC data, one can find various indications for a new resonance in the expected mass range with a non-negligible statistical significance.
