Abstract

The ability to directly observe electronic band structure in modern nanoscale field-effect devices could transform understanding of their physics and function. One could, for example, visualize local changes in the electrical and chemical potentials as a gate voltage is applied. One could also study intriguing physical phenomena such as electrically induced topological transitions and many-body spectral reconstructions. Here we show that submicron angle-resolved photoemission (micro-ARPES) applied to two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructures affords this ability. In graphene devices, we observe a shift of the chemical potential by 0.6 eV across the Dirac point as a gate voltage is applied. In several 2D semiconductors we see the conduction band edge appear as electrons accumulate, establishing its energy and momentum, and observe significant band-gap renormalization at low densities. Abstract

Research on two-dimensional (2D) materials currently occupies a sizeable fraction of the materials science community, which has led to the development of a comprehensive body of knowledge on such layered structures. However, the goal of this thesis is to deepen the understanding of the comparatively unknown heterostructures composed of different stacked layers. First, we utilise linear-scaling density functional theory (LS-DFT) to simulate intricate interfaces between the most promising layered materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) or black phosphorus (BP) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). We show that hBN can protect BP from external influences, while also preventing the band-gap reduction in BP stacks, and enabling the use of BP heterostructures as tunnelling field effect transistors. Moreover, our simulations of the electronic structure of TMDC interfaces have reproduced photoemission spectroscopy observations, and have also provided an explanation for the coexistence of commensurate and incommensurate phases within the same crystal. Secondly, we have developed new functionality to be used in the future study of 2D heterostructures, in the form of a linear-response phonon formalism for LS-DFT. As part of its implementation, we have solved multiple implementation and theoretical issues through the use of novel algorithms.

Abstract

Combining monolayers of different two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors into heterostructures opens up a wealth of possibilities for novel electronic and optical functionalities. Exploiting them hinges on accurate measurements of the band parameters and orbital hybridization in separate and stacked monolayers, many of which are only available as small samples. The recently introduced technique of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with submicron spatial resolution ({\mu}-ARPES) offers the capability to measure small samples, but the energy resolution obtained for such exfoliated samples to date (~0.5 eV) has been inadequate. Here, we show that by suitable heterostructure sample design the full potential of {\mu}-ARPES can be realized. We focus on MoSe2/WSe2 van der Waals heterostructures, which are 2D analogs of 3D semiconductor heterostructures. We find that in a MoSe2/WSe2 heterobilayer the bands in the K valleys are weakly hybridized, with the conduction and valence band edges originating in the MoSe2 and WSe2 respectively. There is stronger hybridization at the {\Gamma} point, but the valence band edge remains at the K points. This is consistent with the recent observation of interlayer excitons where the electron and hole are valley polarized but in opposite layers. We determine the valence band offset to be 300 meV, which combined with photoluminescence measurements implies that the binding energy of interlayer excitons is at least 200 meV, comparable with that of intralayer excitons., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures; + 14 pages, 8 figures in supplementary

19. The Stacking in Bulk and Bilayer Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Abstract

The stacking orders in layered hexagonal boron nitride bulk and bilayers are studied using high-level ab initio theory (local second-order Moller-Plesset perturbation theory, LMP2). Our results show that both electrostatic and London dispersion interactions are responsible for interlayer distance and stacking order, with AA' being the most stable one. The minimum energy sliding path includes only the AA' high-symmetry stacking, and the energy barrier is 3.4 meV per atom for the bilayer. State-of-the-art Density-functionals with and without London dispersion correction fail to correctly describe the interlayer energies with the exception of PBEsol that agrees very well with our LMP2 results and experiment., Comment: Accepted to Phys. Abstract

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is an adenocarcinoma originating from the epithelial cells of the bile ducts/hepatocytes or peribiliary glands. There are three types of cholangiocarcinoma: intrahepatic, perihilar and distal. CCA represents approximately 3% of the gastrointestinal malignancies. The incidence of CCA is higher in regions of the Eastern world compared to the Western countries. There are multiple risk factors associated with cholangiocarcinoma such as liver fluke, primary sclerosing cholangitis, chronic hepatitis B, liver cirrhosis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Endoscopy plays an important role in the diagnosis and management of cholangiocarcinoma. The main endoscopic methods used for diagnosis, biliary drainage and delivering intrabiliary local therapies are endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and endoscopic ultrasound. The purpose of this review is to analyze the current data found in literature about cholangiocarcinoma, with a focus on the actual diagnostic tools and endoscopic management options. Abstract

Oxide materials are currently considered a promising alternative to traditional thermoelectrics. Moderate charge carrier mobility stemming from strong covalent and ionic bonding, combined with relatively high thermal conductivity, represent known disadvantages of these materials for thermoelectric applications. However, oxides offer a possibility to operate at high temperatures, resulting in a higher Carnot efficiency. In addition, their known structural and microstructural versatility can open new horizons for thermoelectric applications. This work reviews some representative cases of engineering the composition and microstructure of a series of selected oxides towards high thermoelectric performance. The selected approaches will include laser processing, in situ formed composites, defects tailoring and aluminothermy-boosted sintering, also taking into account the unique redox-tuning capabilities of oxides. Abstract

We present an overview of the onetep program for linear-scaling density functional theory (DFT) calculations with large basis set (plane-wave) accuracy on parallel computers. The DFT energy is computed from the density matrix, which is constructed from spatially localized orbitals we call Non-orthogonal Generalized Wannier Functions (NGWFs), expressed in terms of periodic sinc (psinc) functions. During the calculation, both the density matrix and the NGWFs are optimized with localization constraints. By taking advantage of localization, onetep is able to perform calculations including thousands of atoms with computational effort, which scales linearly with the number or atoms. The code has a large and diverse range of capabilities, explored in this paper, including different boundary conditions, various exchange–correlation functionals (with and without exact exchange), finite electronic temperature methods for metallic systems, methods for strongly correlated systems, molecular dynamics, vibrational calculations, time-dependent DFT, electronic transport, core loss spectroscopy, implicit solvation, quantum mechanical (QM)/molecular mechanical and QM-in-QM embedding, density of states calculations, distributed multipole analysis, and methods for partitioning charges and interactions between fragments. Calculations with onetep provide unique insights into large and complex systems that require an accurate atomic-level description, ranging from biomolecular to chemical, to materials, and to physical problems, as we show with a small selection of illustrative examples. onetep has always aimed to be at the cutting edge of method and software developments, and it serves as a platform for developing new methods of electronic structure simulation. Abstract

Oxide materials represent a promising alternative to traditional thermoelectrics, by providing a possibility to operate at high temperatures, resulting in a higher Carnot efficiency. Although their conversion efficiency is considerably lower, their known structural and microstructural versatility can open new horizons for thermoelectric applications. This work reviews some representative cases of engineering the composition and microstructure of oxides towards high thermoelectric performance. The selected approaches will include laser processing, in-situ formed composites, defects tailoring and aluminothermy-boosted sintering, also taking into account the unique redox-tuning capabilities of oxides. Representative examples will include ceramic materials based on SrTiO3, ZnO, CaMnO3 and Ca3Co4O9. published
