The construction industry faced several challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting different aspects of construction projects, such as the financial stability of companies and the mental well-being of professionals. However, there is limited knowledge about how these challenges impacted the skills required by professionals in construction. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze changes in skills required by construction professionals in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. To do so, we qualitatively analyzed interviews obtained from construction professionals in Chile who worked through the pandemic to study how skills required by construction professionals before the pandemic were impacted during, and after the pandemic. The results indicate that before the pandemic, the most valued skills were related to teamwork, decision-making, planning, and leadership. During the development of the COVID-19 pandemic, skills such as effective communication, computer skills, planning, and stress management were prominent. Regarding the post-pandemic period, interviewees emphasized that construction professionals required mainly adaptability to change, stress management, and planning skills. Our study contributes by identifying changes in the skills required by construction professionals, emphasizing a shift towards skills like digital communication, adaptability, and stress management. Additionally, our study emphasizes planning as the most relevant skill for construction professionals to deal with a highly disruptive event such as the pandemic in construction projects. The study contributed to theorizing the consequences of the pandemic faced by the construction sector in the context of skills required by construction professionals. In practicality, construction managers may use our results to develop strategies to adapt to the post-pandemic context and be prepared for future disruptive events. The global concern over fatigue in construction professionals, leading to diminished attention, unsafe behaviors, and even accidents, has escalated. Existing research on the impact of fatigue on attention has predominantly focused on qualitative behavioral aspects, relying extensively on self-reported measures and subjective assessments, resulting in interpretations with strong subjectivity and occasionally inconsistent findings. This study bridges this gap by adopting a neural perspective, utilizing a comprehensive quantitative measurement approach that integrates EEG (electroencephalograms), behavioral tests, and subjective rating scales. This interdisciplinary approach attempts to explore the neural mechanisms underlying the impact of fatigue on the attention of construction professionals, considering the regulatory effects of effort. Twenty participants from the construction sector were enlisted to undertake a 60-min Oddball cognitive task. The results indicate that as cognitive fatigue intensifies, the pattern of attention decline exhibits a slow-fast-slow trajectory. Initially, the dominance of effort is observed, which transitions to a stage where resource consumption takes precedence. In the later stage, participants tend to prioritize expediency over accuracy. The study synthesizes these outcomes to delve into the neural mechanisms of fatigue's impact on attention, addressing the distinct phases, underlying mechanisms, and functions of attention. Moreover, it provides actionable recommendations to elevate attention levels and enhance safety in the construction industry, serving as a valuable guide for practical applications and further research in construction safety management. Practical Applications: This study underscores the effect of cognitive fatigue on the attention of construction professionals, directly impacting on-site safety. With increasing fatigue, the attentiveness and response precision of these professionals diminish, escalating accident risks. Implementing practical measures such as work schedule optimization, regular breaks, and fatigue monitoring through technology can bolster safety. Additionally, site managers might consider task rotation and focus on cognitive resource management during training. These strategies are designed to enhance both safety and productivity by prioritizing the cognitive well-being of construction professionals, guiding companies in establishing more effective safety protocols in the workplace. Identifying hazards is necessary for preventing accidents in construction site operations. In light of this assertion, construction professionals must recognise hazards in site operation. However, recognising hazards remains an issue of concern in the construction industry. Invariably, it is expedient that factors affecting hazard recognition be investigated. The study, therefore, aims to examine the factors affecting hazard recognition in construction site operations and test this hypothesis: ‘there is no significant difference in factors affecting hazard recognition among construction professionals based on their work experience’. Adopting a quantitative research design and cross-sectional research strategy, a questionnaire with 13 factors adapted from literature was used to elicit information from construction professionals. From the median calculated, the factor with the highest value was “multiple hazards associated with a single source of the task”. Furthermore, the study discovered a significant difference in six of the thirteen factors affecting hazard recognition. Because of this, it was concluded that the experience of construction professionals affects their perception of the factors affecting hazard recognition for the six factors. All these issues taken into account, safety experts in construction industry responsible for health and safety training should consider the experiences of construction professionals when developing curriculum on hazard recognition. Purpose: Construction professionals are the major contributors to developing a sustainable construction industry, whereas architects, engineers and quantity surveyors are the key construction professionals who must play extraordinary roles in achieving better sustainable construction. Therefore, this study aims to identify the job attributes of key Sri Lankan construction professionals in addressing challenges associated with climate change. Design/methodology/approach: The study adopted a mixed research approach. A literature review and preliminary semi-structured interviews were used to appraise the job roles of architects, engineers and quantity surveyors in addressing challenges associated with climate change. The data collected through the qualitative approach were used in an online questionnaire survey, and the findings were analysed using the relative index method. Findings: The findings highlight that regardless of the knowledge of the professional category on green rating tools, carbon footprint, adaptation of renewable energies for the reduction of energy consumption, building information modelling-related applications and waste management concepts/practices are the foremost job attributes required for the key Sri Lankan construction professionals in addressing challenges associated with climate change. Research limitations/implications: The results from this study provide a handful of guidance to construction industry professionals, national and international professional institutions, non-governmental organisations and other relevant authorities to address climate change within the built environment by identifying ways for improving the relevant key job attributes of construction industry professionals. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study that explores the job attributes of key Sri Lankan construction professionals in addressing the challenges associated with climate change. The widespread adoption of building information modelling in the construction industry faces significant obstacles, particularly among small and medium-sized construction enterprises. This research accessed barriers to building information modelling adoption among small and medium enterprises in the Nigerian construction industry. The study obtained quantitative data from 182 participants out of the 200 questionnaires that were distributed. A combination of descriptive and exploratory factor analysis was performed using IBM SPSS version 26, and the Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin (KMO) test and Bartlett's sphericity test were conducted to check data adequacy and reliability. The study findings clustered five factors from the 25 identified barriers to BIM adoption in SMEs in the Nigerian construction industry. They are functionality and compatibility, risk and the unavailability of BIM resources, inadequate awareness of BIM, inadequate clients' demands and support, and stakeholders' skills gaps. The study recommends training opportunities for construction professionals, government facilitation through incentives, and safeguarding intellectual property linked to BIM-oriented projects. Collaboration among construction stakeholders would also increase client awareness and knowledge sharing on modern technology, such as BIM adoption in SMEs in the construction industry. In many emerging nations, robust economic growth plans generate occupational depression, anxiety, and stress among construction industry personnel. This study aims to determine the relationship between these items and the risk factors (demographic) among Malaysian construction professionals. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 173 Malaysian construction professionals. A DASS-21 questionnaire is used to survey eligible respondents. Results: Findings show that construction professionals have a high level of stress (54.9%), anxiety (48.5%), and depression (37%). Gender is significantly associated with stress (p = 0.000) and depression (p = 0.000). In turn, stress (p = 0.038), anxiety (p = 0.000), and depression (p = 0.001) all demonstrate a significant relationship with health status Conclusions: Health status is the risk factor most significantly associated with occupational stress. Given the findings, construction managers can help protect their employees and their mental health by promoting a healthy workplace through stress management and social activities.

The COVID-19 pandemic had disastrous effects, particularly on construction projects, which resulted to work stoppage. Though, most construction industries explored preventive measures such as social distancing, working online, wearing personal protective equipment and upholding good hygiene to keep the construction projects back on track. This study thus aimed to examine the relationships between the current state of COVID-19 pandemic on the Saudi Arabia's ongoing construction projects and preventive measures based on the lessons learned from the pandemic. Accordingly, a purposive sample of 147 construction based professionals involved in selected projects within Saudi Arabia participated in the sirve. The results shows that COVID-19 preventive measures had significant impact on Saudi construction projects. Furthermore, project time was most significantly impacted by COVID-19 pandemic, followed by productivity, material management, human resources management, and project cost. Moreover, Pearson's correlation exhibits a significant positive correlation (p<0.05) amongst the perceived impact of the COVID-19 preventive measures and construction projects performance. Impact of Government supports and sector differences on COVID-19 preventive measures were also assessed. The t-test results showed that companies which received government supports were perceived to have less impact of COVID-19 measures. While, using ANOVA statistics, companies that provide service for both public and private sector appeared to have most impact of COVID-19 measures. Overall, this upholds the perception that lack of adherence to COVID-19 preventive measures could distort the whole construction process. It was thus recommended that construction industries should clinch on innovative and diverse use of technologies in the age of multi-faceted disruption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Construction project monitoring (CPM) is becoming more expensive and error-prone for clients with multi-location projects and consultants. The persistent problem of late decisions that occur on-site, mostly reported after significant time has elapsed further reduces monitoring efficiency. This study examines drivers and barriers to the use of Web-based asynchronous communication tools (WACT) for CPM in the Construction Industry. Copies of structured questionnaires were administered to 485 construction professionals on active construction sites comprising construction managers, architects, quantity surveyors, and engineers in Lagos and Abuja who are involved in CPM and 256 (53%) were returned. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) extracted 5 drivers and 4 barriers to the use of WACT for CPM. Factors were ranked using mean and standard deviation. The degree of agreement between the two domains was compared using the Kendall coefficient of agreement. Results show that project monitoring efficiency (PME) factors ranked highest amongst drivers for use of WACT for CPM. Other drivers, that equally ranked high, are project monitoring cost (PMC) and project monitoring time (PMT) factors. Construction industry culture (CIC) factors ranked highest as a barrier with organisational personnel (OP) and technology adoption (TA) factors equally of significant rank. The Study identified latent drivers and barriers to the use of WACT for CPM. Results also revealed construction professionals are willing to use WACT for CPM but are skeptical about its seamless use to take over the traditional monitoring methods. It is recommended that client agencies that fund multi-location projects like the United State Agency for International Development (USAID) or Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) in Nigeria should develop models for the use of WACT for CPM. Similarly, consulting firms can reduce overhead on travel expenses and improve monitoring efficiency by hosting such tools on their projects.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of work-life balance on project performance among construction professionals, with an emphasis on understanding how co-worker relationship quality influences this dynamic. A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design was adopted. Validated questionnaires were used to gather data from 335 construction professionals, selected via convenience sampling to reflect the dynamic and dispersed nature of the construction sector. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS (version 28.0) and SmartPLS version 4, employing PLS-SEM to examine the hypothesised model and assess relationships among latent constructs. To ensure the model's predictive accuracy and relevance, we adopted the PLSpredict method and the cross-validated predictive ability test, comparing our model's predictions against established benchmarks. Results indicate both work-life balance and co-worker relationship quality had significant positive effects on project performance. Moreover, the co-worker relationship quality was found to play a crucial moderating role in this relationship, with a harmonious co-worker relationship further enhancing the positive effect of a balanced work-life on project performance of construction professionals. Construction firms are advised to prioritise initiatives promoting work-life balance, recognising its pivotal role in enhancing project outcomes. Furthermore, fostering positive co-worker relationships can amplify these benefits, indicating the need for team-building and positive workplace culture initiatives. While work-life balance has been extensively studied in other sectors, this research fills a significant gap in the construction management literature, especially regarding the role of co-worker relationships quality in moderating the work-life balance and performance nexus. Lastly, the current study contributes to the work-life balance, co-worker relationship quality and project performance discourse by dissecting this relationship through a confluence of social exchange theory, JD-R model, and conservation of resources theory.

Purpose – This study was conducted to identify, summarise, analyse and categorise mobile device applications (Apps), relevant to the construction industry and to explore their uses and exposure levels. Design/methodology/approach – The research method involved reviewing literature and searching for Apps. The construction Apps were found by developing key phrases. These key phrases were used to develop search strategies, which were then used to find the construction Apps. The Apps found were categorised based on the similarity of their uses. Findings – The 136 Apps identified were summarised, analysed, and categorised into 11 groups of distinct construction operations and tasks. The “Design and Drawing Apps”, “Measurement and Estimation Apps”, “Management Apps”, “All Round Apps” and “Construction Site Apps” recorded 29, 28, 26, 21 and 11 numbers of Apps, respectively. The Autodesk Sketchbook, GPS Field Area Measure, MagicPlan, Measure and TSheets were the top five in terms of the number of downloads. These Apps in terms of their exposure levels in the construction industry record 4.76%, 2.38%, 0.52%, 0.48% and 0.42%, respectively. Originality/value – This paper provides a catalogue of the continuum of construction Apps for a wide variety of construction operations/activities which are available for construction professionals and provide guidance on their uses to assist in selecting appropriate Apps for specified operation/tasks/activities in the construction industry. Construction professionals may benefit from increased productivity, efficiency and ease of working.

Augmented reality (AR) is the combination of real and computer-based images and scenes to bring about a unified and improved view of the world. This study assesses the benefits of augmented reality technology (ART) to the construction industry so that productivity in construction can be enhanced. A survey of construction professionals involved in the built environment was carried out in Lagos State, Nigeria. Architects, Project managers, Engineers, Quantity surveyors, and Builders were engaged in the survey, and they were sent a well-structured questionnaire. Convenience sampling techniques were adopted in choosing these professionals. The collected data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. According to the findings, the five most important benefits of ART are improved team collaboration and communication; enhanced repairs, rehabilitation, and maintenance; improved communication / real-time information retrieval; accurate automated measurement; and low-cost virtual training in operating heavy construction equipment. The results showed that there nine (9) out of fifteen (15) benefits had no significant difference in terms of the opinions of professionals, while the other six (6) had a significant difference. A post-hoc test revealed that there is a significant difference in opinions between the Architects and Quantity surveyors or between Quantity surveyors and Project managers on the benefits of AR while there is no significant difference for other professionals. The study concluded that AR improves collaboration and communication between workers on construction sites. It is therefore recommended that the Nigerian construction industry should create awareness programmes and platforms to inform its current and upcoming professionals on the benefits of using AR in the industry. Retaining and replacing skilled professionals can be problematic within high-performance construction teams. The onus cascades upon fledgling, inexperienced individuals to embrace these high-stress responsibilities. Previous studies have highlighted the influential role that stress plays as an antecedent to burnout. Emotional fatigue, depersonalisation and a lack of personal achievement all sprout from the burnout syndrome. This project was undertaken as an inductive approach to theory development and employed a cross-sectional survey using a questionnaire. The study population comprised of construction professionals within the New Zealand construction industry. Convenience sampling was used to collect data from 266 New Zealand Site Safe members and their industry partners utilising a survey software called Qualtrics to address the research question. Through the use of a Likert scale, the mean values of the data were used to construct a table that incorporated combined stressors and their stress reduction strategies. “What stresses do construction professionals experience and what recommendations can be concluded to change workplace behaviour to reduce burnout?” The data was then used to construct a table that incorporated combined stressors and their stress reduction strategies. This research identified the contributing stress factors and their respective remedies to make changes in the New Zealand construction environment. The findings noted that various factors within the different clusters were indicative of high workplace stress, the strongest cluster being individual job demands. Other clusters highlighted factors such as managerial behaviour, organisational leadership and the economy as significant contributors. Transparent and clear communications between all staff levels proved to be the strongest moderating factor as a stress reduction remedy. The respondents indicated that a change in their sleeping patterns also created fatigue that leads to burnout. The contribution of this paper and contribution of this research lies in presenting the most significant current stressors in the New Zealand construction industry and aligning them with stress reductions strategies.

Conflict resolution in the construction industry is the informal or formal procedure that two or more construction professionals use to find a peaceful solution to their misunderstanding. The resolution of conflict can be beneficial to construction professionals, if it is resolved or managed appropriately. Therefore, this study aimed to examine various benefits of conflict resolution among construction professionals in Nigeria. On the research methodology used in this research, a quantitative research method was used. A total number of 150 questionnaires were sent out and 135 were received back from the construction professionals in Nigeria. The construction professionals are quantity surveyors, architects, builders, construction managers, civil engineers, and project managers. The research data that was collected underwent cleaning and screening before the commencement of the analysis. Also, the data collected pertaining to this study was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 21). This research made use of descriptive and exploratory factor analysis. The study found that conflict resolution could assist in the generation of new insights and perception. This was ranked the highest followed by other benefits of conflict resolution like: reduction in tension, helps professionals to accomplish their ambitions, improves workplace conflicts, and reduces task ambiguity of professionals for construction professionals to enjoy the benefits of conflict resolution they must resolve conflicts among themselves as early as possible.

The construction industry is notorious for poor work–life balance (WLB) due to its strong culture of long working hours, nonstandard work schedules, and variable work duration. Extant construction literature highlights that the poor WLB in the industry is a work stressor that leads to a low level of organizational commitment (OC), which is a strong predictor of employee turnover and productivity. However, little attention has been paid to understanding how WLB affects OC, which could hinder construction organizations from developing targeted measures to improve OC. This study addressed this gap by using the A Shortened Stress Evaluation Tool (ASSET) model grounded in occupational stress theory to depict the underlying mechanisms of how WLB affects OC through the mediation effect psychological well-being [i.e., positive emotions (PE) and sense of purpose (SP)]. The ASSET questionnaire was used to measure the constructs via an online questionnaire survey administered to construction professionals around the globe registered with the Association for Project Management, the Chartered Institute of Building, and the Project Management Institute. A total of 255 valid responses were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). Contrary to previous research, this study found that WLB does not have a direct impact on OC. Instead, it affects OC through the mediation effects of SP and PE. These results indicate that construction firms could benefit from enhancing SP and PE to yield greater organizational commitment rather than emphasizing enhanced WLB per se. This could be done by increasing employee participation in setting goals and objectives, clarifying the meaning and purpose of work, working to align work goals and objectives with employees' sense of meaning and purpose, and generating a greater frequency of experienced positive emotions by creating work environments that satisfy the psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Previous studies have established that occupational stress of construction professionals is strongly associated with low productivity, high absenteeism, and poor work performance. However, there is a lack of scientific studies that provide linkages between occupational stressors and the dimensions of work-life balance. The present research aims to study the perceived level of occupational stress and assess its relationship with the dimensions of work-life balance among construction professionals. Within an established theoretical framework, eight hypotheses were formulated to investigate the above relationship. A cross-sectional survey-based approach was adopted to assess the level of occupational stress and work-life balance. The survey was administered among construction project managers, project engineers, and site engineers in the Indian context. With 285 valid responses, relative importance index and multiple regression analysis methods were utilised to analyse the collected data. The findings revealed major stressors that contribute to high levels of occupational stress under work-related and organisation-related stressor categories. The top five identified stressors included job nature demands coordination with multiple stakeholders, tight time frame for work, unstable working hours, bureaucracy, and quantitative work overload. With regards to the relationship between the categories of occupational stress and work-life balance, the results indicate that work-related stressors are significantly and positively related to work interference to personal life (WIPL) and personal life interference to work (PLIW) and negatively relate to work enhancement of personal life (WEPL) and personal life enhancement of work (PLEW). In the case of organisation-related stressors, both organisation policy and organisation position-related stressors significantly and positively influence WIPL however, no significant relationship was noticed with PLIW, WEPL, and PLEW. While the existing studies have provided evidence that work-life imbalance causes occupational stress, one of the major contributions of the present study is that it provides valid scientific evidence that occupational stress significantly influences work-life life balance negatively. The study’s findings with regards to unveiling the relationship between the categories of occupational stressors and dimensions of work-life balance would help organisations derive relevant policies for creating a supportive work environment. To this end, the paper advances our collective understanding of occupational stress and work-life balance with multiple dimensions and perspectives.

The top five identified stressors included job nature demands coordination with multiple stakeholders, tight time frame for work, unstable working hours, bureaucracy, and quantitative work overload. With regards to the relationship between the categories of occupational stress and work-life balance, the results indicate that work-related stressors are significantly and positively related to work interference to personal life (WIPL) and personal life interference to work (PLIW) and negatively relate to work enhancement of personal life (WEPL) and personal life enhancement of work (PLEW). In the case of organisationrelated stressors, both organisation policy and organisation position-related stressors significantly and positively influence WIPL however, no significant relationship was noticed with PLIW, WEPL, and PLEW. While the existing studies have provided evidence that work-life imbalance causes occupational stress, one of the major contributions of the present study is that it provides valid scientific evidence that occupational stress significantly influences work-life life balance negatively. The study's findings with regards to unveiling the relationship between the categories of occupational stressors and dimensions of work-life balance would help organisations derive relevant policies for creating a supportive work environment.
