1. Assessing Teachers' Social and Emotional Competence: The Validation of SECTRS in Italy, Latvia, and Portugal

Abstract

Despite growing interest in evaluating the social and emotional learning of students and the development of standardized assessment tools for this purpose, there remains a dearth of validated instruments for evaluating teachers' social and emotional skills. We set out to address this knowledge gap by investigating the psychometric characteristics of the Social-Emotional Competence Teacher Rating Scale (SECTRS) questionnaire, an instrument originally developed and validated in North America. Participants were 572 teachers from Italy (n=324), Latvia (n=139), and Portugal (n=109) ranging from 40 to 59 years of age. We performed confirmatory factor analysis procedures to validate a four-factor model measuring Teacher-student relationships, Emotion regulation, Social awareness, and Interpersonal relationships. The data supported this factorial structure, with a total of 14 items included in the final model. The outcomes of a multi-group comparison indicated that the model exhibited partial invariance, up to and including metric invariance, across the three cultural settings. We discuss these findings in relation to selecting appropriate instruments for assessing the social and emotional skills of teachers in different cultural contexts.

2. Bootstrap Pettitt test for detecting change point in hydroclimatological data: a case study for Itaipu hydroelectric plant in Brazil

Abstract

The Pettitt test has been widely used in climate change and hydrological analyzes. However, studies evidence difficulties of this test in detecting change points, especially in small samples. This study presents a bootstrap application of the Pettitt test, which is numerically compared with the classical Pettitt test by an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study. The proposed test outperforms the classical test in all simulated scenarios. An application of the tests is conducted in the historical series of naturalized flows of the Itaipu Hydroelectric plant in Brazil, where several studies have shown a change point in the 70s. When the series is split into shorter series, to simulate small sample actual situations, the proposed test is more powerful than the classical Pettitt test to detect the change point. The proposed test can be an important tool to detect abrupt changes in water availability, supporting hydroclimatological resources decision making., Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures

3. Topological meron-antimeron domain walls and skyrmions in a low-symmetry system

Abstract

The generation of topologically non-trivial magnetic configurations has been a pivotal topic in both basic and applied nanomagnetism research. Localized non-coplanar magnetic defects such as skyrmions or merons were found to interact strongly with currents, making them interesting candidates for future spintronics applications. Here, we study a low-symmetry bcc(110) system by spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and an atomistic spin model using parameters obtained from first-principles calculations. We demonstrate how a delicate balance between energy terms generates both topologically trivial and non-trivial domain walls, depending on their crystallographic direction. The topological walls consist of merons and antimerons and the topological charge amounts to about 0.2/nm wall length. The incorporation of holes in the films facilitates the transition from an in-plane ferromagnetic ground state to a spin-spiral state. Both domain walls and spirals transition into isolated elongated magnetic skyrmions in applied magnetic fields, establishing low-symmetry systems as a versatile platform for spin-texture engineering.

4. Magnet-superconductor hybrid quantum systems: a materials platform for topological superconductivity

Abstract

Magnet-superconductor hybrid (MSH) systems have recently emerged as one of the most significant developments in condensed matter physics. This has generated, in the last decade, a steadily rising interest in the understanding of their unique properties. They have been proposed as one of the most promising platforms for the establishment of topological superconductivity, which holds high potential for application in future quantum information technologies. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) plays a crucial role in the race to unveil the fundamental origin of the unique properties of MSH systems, with the aim to discover new hybrid quantum materials capable of hosting topologically non-trivial unconventional superconducting phases. In particular, the combination of STM studies with tight-binding model calculations have represented, so far, the most successful approach to unveil and explain the emergent electronic properties of MSHs. The scope of this review is to offer a broad perspective on the field of MSHs from an atomic-level investigation point-of-view. The focus is on discussing the link between the magnetic ground state hosted by the hybrid system and the corresponding emergent superconducting phase. This is done for MSHs with both one-dimensional (atomic chains) and two-dimensional (atomic lattices and thin films) magnetic systems proximitized to conventional s-wave superconductors. We present a systematic categorization of the experimentally investigated systems with respect to defined experimentally accessible criteria to verify or falsify the presence of topological superconductivity and Majorana edge modes. 5. A kinetic derivation of spatial distributed models for tumor-immune system interactions

Abstract

We propose a mathematical kinetic framework to investigate interactions between tumor cells and the immune system, focusing on the spatial dynamics of tumor progression and immune responses. We develop two kinetic models: one describes a conservative scenario where immune cells switch between active and passive states without proliferation, while the other incorporates immune cell proliferation and apoptosis. By considering specific assumptions about the microscopic processes, we derive macroscopic systems featuring linear diffusion, nonlinear cross-diffusion, and nonlinear self-diffusion. Our analysis provides insights into equilibrium configurations and stability, revealing clear correspondences among the macroscopic models derived from the same kinetic framework. Using dynamical systems theory, we examine the stability of equilibrium states and conduct numerical simulations to validate our findings. These results highlight the significance of spatial interactions in tumor-immune dynamics, paving the way for a structured exploration of therapeutic strategies and further investigations into immune responses in various pathological contexts., Comment: 29 pages, 9 figures

6. Promoting Socioeconomic Equity through Automatic Formative Assessment

Abstract

Ensuring equity in education is a goal for sustainable development. Among the factors that hinder equity, socioeconomic status (SES) has the highest impact on learning Mathematics. This paper addresses the issue of equity at the secondary school level by proposing an approach based on adopting automatic formative assessment (AFA). Carefully designed mathematical activities with interactive feedback were experimented with a sample of 299 students of grade 8 for a school year. A control group of 257 students learned the same topics using traditional methodologies. Part of the sample belonged to low SES. The learning achievement was assessed through pre-and post-tests to understand if the adoption of AFA impacted learning and whether the results depended on the students' SES. The results show a positive effect of the experimentation (effect size: 0.42). Moreover, the effect size of the experimentation restricted to the low-SES group is high (0.77). In the treatment group, the results do not depend on SES, while in the control group, they do, suggesting that AFA is an equitable approach while traditional instruction risks perpetuating inequalities.

7. A Systematic Mapping Study about Learner Experience Design in Computational Systems

Abstract

Contemporary society is characterized by diversity and intricacy, necessitating more meaningful learning experiences. To meet these evolving needs, the incorporation of computational systems into education must acknowledge the distinctive characteristics of learners. Therefore, we conducted a Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) to investigate technologies that support the Learner eXperience (LX) design in computational systems. LX refers to learners' perceptions, reactions, and achievements while engaging with learning resources, encompassing digital games, simulations, and multimedia. The SMS results uncovered distinct LX design technologies, with a notice able inclination towards learner-centric strategies. Interestingly, the results highlighted a scarcity of research targeting non-traditional learning environments (e.g., technical visits) and that facilitate interactions among learners beyond their own classmates (e.g., industry experts). In this way, the SMS contributes by revealing LX design technologies, LX design elements, relevant constructs/theories, computational systems, environments, contexts, and other related factors, thereby enhancing the understanding of optimal learning experiences within computational learning systems.

Abstract

A charge-density-wave (CDW) is characterized by a dynamical order parameter consisting of a time-dependent amplitude and phase, which manifest as optically-active collective modes of the CDW phase. Studying the behaviour of such collective modes in the time-domain, and their coupling with electronic and lattice order, provides important insight into the underlying mechanisms behind CDW formation. In this work, we report on femtosecond broadband transient reflectivity experiments on bulk 1$T$-VSe$_2$ using near-infrared excitation. At low temperature, we observe coherent oscillations associated with the CDW amplitude mode and phonons of the distorted lattice. Across the expected transition temperature at 110 K, we confirm signatures of a rearrangement of the electronic structure evident in the quasiparticle dynamics. However, we find that the amplitude mode instead softens to zero frequency at 80 K, possibly indicating an additional phase transition at this temperature. In addition, we demonstrate photoinduced CDW melting, associated with a collapse of the electronic and lattice order, which occurs at moderate excitation densities, consistent with a dominant electron-phonon CDW mechanism., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, supporting information

9. Action potential dynamics on heterogenous neural networks: from kinetic to macroscopic equations

Abstract

In the context of multi-agent systems of binary interacting particles, a kinetic model for action potential dynamics on a neural network is proposed, accounting for heterogeneity in the neuron-to-neuron connections, as well as in the brain structure. Two levels of description are coupled: in a single area, pairwise neuron interactions for the exchange of membrane potential are statistically described; among different areas, a graph description of the brain network topology is included. Abstract

Results are presented for the measurement of large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during 19 years of operation, prior to AugerPrime, the upgrade of the Observatory. The 3D dipole amplitude and direction are reconstructed above $4\,$EeV in four energy bins. Besides the established dipolar anisotropy in right ascension above $8\,$EeV, the Fourier amplitude of the $8$ to $16\,$EeV energy bin is now also above the $5\sigma$ discovery level. No time variation of the dipole moment above $8\,$EeV is found, setting an upper limit to the rate of change of such variations of $0.3\%$ per year at the $95\%$ confidence level. Additionally, the results for the angular power spectrum are shown, demonstrating no other statistically significant multipoles. The results for the equatorial dipole component down to $0.03\,$EeV are presented, using for the first time a data set obtained with a trigger that has been optimized for lower energies. Finally, model predictions are discussed and compared with observations, based on two source emission scenarios obtained in the combined fit of spectrum and composition above $0.6\,$EeV., Comment: Minor modifications, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

11. Can We Learn the Energy of Sublimation of Ice from Water Clusters?

Abstract

This short paper reports a study of the electronic dissociation energies, De, of water clusters from direct ab initio (mostly CCSD(T)) calculations and the q-AQUA and MB-pol potentials. These clusters range in size from 6-25 monomers. These are all in very good agreement with each other, as shown in a recent Perspective by Herman and Xantheas. To the best of our knowledge, we present for the first time results for the De per monomer. To our surprise this quantity appears to be converging to a value close to 12 kcal/mol. An estimate of 1.5 - 2 kcal/mol for the {\Delta}ZPE for these clusters puts the value of D0 at 10 to 10.5 kcal/mol. This value is remarkably (and probably fortuitously) close to the reported sublimation enthalpy of 10.2 kcal/mol at 10 K. However, given that these De energies correspond to dissociation of the cluster to N isolated monomers the interpretation of ``vaporization" of these ``solid" clusters is qualitatively reasonable., Comment: 7 pages 2 figures. 12. Femtosecond switching of strong light-matter interactions in microcavities with two-dimensional semiconductors

Abstract

Ultrafast all-optical logic devices based on nonlinear light-matter interactions hold the promise to overcome the speed limitations of conventional electronic devices. Strong coupling of excitons and photons inside an optical resonator enhances such interactions and generates new polariton states which give access to unique nonlinear phenomena, such as Bose-Einstein condensation, used for all-optical ultrafast polariton transistors. However, the pulse energies required to pump such devices range from tens to hundreds of pJ, making them not competitive with electronic transistors. Here we introduce a new paradigm for all-optical switching based on the ultrafast transition from the strong to the weak coupling regime in microcavities embedding atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides. Employing single and double stacks of hBN-encapsulated MoS$_2$ homobilayers with high optical nonlinearities and fast exciton relaxation times, we observe a collapse of the 55-meV polariton gap and its revival in less than one picosecond, lowering the threshold for optical switching below 4 pJ per pulse, while retaining ultrahigh switching frequencies. As an additional degree of freedom, the switching can be triggered pumping either the intra- or the interlayer excitons of the bilayers at different wavelengths, speeding up the polariton dynamics, owing to unique interspecies excitonic interactions. Our approach will enable the development of compact ultrafast all-optical logical circuits and neural networks, showcasing a new platform for polaritonic information processing based on manipulating the light-matter coupling.

13. $\Delta$-Machine Learning to Elevate DFT-based Potentials and a Force Field to the CCSD(T) Level Illustrated for Ethanol

Abstract

Progress in machine learning has facilitated the development of potentials that offer both the accuracy of first-principles techniques and vast increases in the speed of evaluation. Recently,"$\Delta$-machine learning" has been used to elevate the quality of a potential energy surface (PES) based on low-level, e.g., density functional theory (DFT) energies and gradients to close to the gold-standard coupled cluster level of accuracy. We have demonstrated the success of this approach for molecules, ranging in size from H$_3$O$^+$ to 15-atom acetyl-acetone and tropolone. These were all done using the B3LYP functional. Here we investigate the generality of this approach for the PBE, M06, M06-2X, and PBE0+MBD functionals, using ethanol as the example molecule. Linear regression with permutationally invariant polynomials is used to fit both low-level and correction PESs. These PESs are employed for standard RMSE analysis for training and test datasets, and then general fidelity tests such as energetics of stationary points, normal mode frequencies, and torsional potentials are examined. We achieve similar improvements in all cases. Interestingly, we obtained significant improvement over DFT gradients where coupled cluster gradients were not used to correct the low-level PES. Finally, we present some results for correcting a recent molecular mechanics force field for ethanol and comment on the possible generality of this approach.

Abstract

Pediatric central nervous system tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children. The five-year survival rate for high-grade glioma in children is less than 20%. The development of new treatments is dependent upon multi-institutional collaborative clinical trials requiring reproducible and accurate centralized response assessment. We present the results of the BraTS-PEDs 2023 challenge, the first Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) challenge focused on pediatric brain tumors. This challenge utilized data acquired from multiple international consortia dedicated to pediatric neuro-oncology and clinical trials. BraTS-PEDs 2023 aimed to evaluate volumetric segmentation algorithms for pediatric brain gliomas from magnetic resonance imaging using standardized quantitative performance evaluation metrics employed across the BraTS 2023 challenges. The top-performing AI approaches for pediatric tumor analysis included ensembles of nnU-Net and Swin UNETR, Auto3DSeg, or nnU-Net with a self-supervised framework. The BraTSPEDs 2023 challenge fostered collaboration between clinicians (neuro-oncologists, neuroradiologists) and AI/imaging scientists, promoting faster data sharing and the development of automated volumetric analysis techniques. These advancements could significantly benefit clinical trials and improve the care of children with brain tumors.

Abstract

Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays are known to be mainly of extragalactic origin, and their propagation is limited by energy losses, so their arrival directions are expected to correlate with the large-scale structure of the local Universe. In this work, we investigate the possible presence of intermediate-scale excesses in the flux of the most energetic cosmic rays from the direction of the supergalactic plane region using events with energies above 20 EeV recorded with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory up to 31 December 2022, with a total exposure of 135,000 km^2 sr yr. The strongest indication for an excess that we find, with a post-trial significance of 3.1{\sigma}, is in the Centaurus region, as in our previous reports, and it extends down to lower energies than previously studied. We do not find any strong hints of excesses from any other region of the supergalactic plane at the same angular scale. In particular, our results do not confirm the reports by the Telescope Array collaboration of excesses from two regions in the Northern Hemisphere at the edge of the field of view of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory is the most sensitive instrument to detect photons with energies above $10^{17}$ eV. It measures extensive air showers generated by ultra high energy cosmic rays using a hybrid technique that exploits the combination of a fluorescence detector with a ground array of particle detectors. The signatures of a photon-induced air shower are a larger atmospheric depth of the shower maximum ($X_{max}$) and a steeper lateral distribution function, along with a lower number of muons with respect to the bulk of hadron-induced cascades. In this work, a new analysis technique in the energy interval between 1 and 30 EeV (1 EeV = $10^{18}$ eV) has been developed by combining the fluorescence detector-based measurement of $X_{max}$ with the specific features of the surface detector signal through a parameter related to the air shower muon content, derived from the universality of the air shower development. No evidence of a statistically significant signal due to photon primaries was found using data collected in about 12 years of operation. Thus, upper bounds to the integral photon flux have been set using a detailed calculation of the detector exposure, in combination with a data-driven background estimation. The derived 95% confidence level upper limits are 0.0403, 0.01113, 0.0035, 0.0023, and 0.0021 km$^{-2}$ sr$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ above 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 EeV, respectively, leading to the most stringent upper limits on the photon flux in the EeV range. Compared with past results, the upper limits were improved by about 40% for the lowest energy threshold and by a factor 3 above 3 EeV, where no candidates were found and the expected background is negligible. The presented limits can be used to probe the assumptions on chemical composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays and allow for the constraint of the mass and lifetime phase space of super-heavy dark matter particles., Comment: 19 pages, 22 figures

Abstract

We report an investigation of the mass composition of cosmic rays with energies from 3 to 100 EeV (1 EeV=$10^{18}$ eV) using the distributions of the depth of shower maximum $X_\mathrm{max}$. The analysis relies on ${\sim}50,000$ events recorded by the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory and a deep-learning-based reconstruction algorithm. Above energies of 5 EeV, the data set offers a 10-fold increase in statistics with respect to fluorescence measurements at the Observatory. After cross-calibration using the Fluorescence Detector, this enables the first measurement of the evolution of the mean and the standard deviation of the $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions up to 100 EeV. Our findings are threefold: (1.) The evolution of the mean logarithmic mass towards a heavier composition with increasing energy can be confirmed and is extended to 100 EeV. (2.) The evolution of the fluctuations of $X_\mathrm{max}$ towards a heavier and purer composition with increasing energy can be confirmed with high statistics. We report a rather heavy composition and small fluctuations in $X_\mathrm{max}$ at the highest energies. (3.) We find indications for a characteristic structure beyond a constant change in the mean logarithmic mass, featuring three breaks that are observed in proximity to the ankle, instep, and suppression features in the energy spectrum., Comment: submitted to Phys. Abstract

We present measurements of the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum $X_\mathrm{max}$, inferred for the first time on an event-by-event level using the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Using deep learning, we were able to extend measurements of the $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions up to energies of 100 EeV ($10^{20}$ eV), not yet revealed by current measurements, providing new insights into the mass composition of cosmic rays at extreme energies. Gaining a 10-fold increase in statistics compared to the Fluorescence Detector data, we find evidence that the rate of change of the average $X_\mathrm{max}$ with the logarithm of energy features three breaks at $6.5\pm0.6~(\mathrm{stat})\pm1~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, $11\pm 2~(\mathrm{stat})\pm1~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, and $31\pm5~(\mathrm{stat})\pm3~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, in the vicinity to the three prominent features (ankle, instep, suppression) of the cosmic-ray flux. The energy evolution of the mean and standard deviation of the measured $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions indicates that the mass composition becomes increasingly heavier and purer, thus being incompatible with a large fraction of light nuclei between 50 EeV and 100 EeV., Comment: submitted to Phys. Abstract

We employ the LuxQED approach to compute the polarized photon PDF (photon pPDF). This approach expresses the pPDF in terms of the structure functions $g_1$ and $g_2$. Different models for the structure functions are employed according to the parameter space region. The resulting pPDF is approximately of the order of $x$ times the unpolarized PDF. The relative uncertainty in the photon pPDF reaches up to $50\%$ for $x \sim 10^{-3}$, decreasing to approximately $10\%$ for higher values of $x$. The computation of the photon pPDF will be essential for improving the precision of polarized calculations and will have fundamental implications for studies at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC)., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

[Context] The growing software development market has increased the demand for qualified professionals in Software Engineering (SE). To this end, companies must enhance their Recruitment and Selection (R&S) processes to maintain high quality teams, including opening opportunities for beginners, such as trainees and interns. However, given the various judgments and sociotechnical factors involved, this complex process of R&S poses a challenge for recent graduates seeking to enter the market. [Objective] This paper aims to identify a set of anti-patterns and recommendations for early career SE professionals concerning R&S processes. [Method] Under an exploratory and qualitative methodological approach, we conducted six online Focus Groups with 18 recruiters with experience in R&S in the software industry. [Results] After completing our qualitative analysis, we identified 12 anti-patterns and 31 actionable recommendations regarding the hiring process focused on entry level SE professionals. The identified anti-patterns encompass behavioral and technical dimensions innate to R&S processes. [Conclusion] These findings provide a rich opportunity for reflection in the SE industry and offer valuable guidance for early-career candidates and organizations. From an academic perspective, this work also raises awareness of the intersection of Human Resources and SE, an area with considerable potential to be expanded in the context of cooperative and human aspects of SE., Comment: 33 pages

Abstract

Acute vascular injury provokes an inflammatory response, resulting in neointimal hyperplasia (NIH) and downstream pathologies. The resolution of inflammation is an active process in which specialized proresolving lipid mediators (SPM) and their receptors play a central role. We sought to examine the acute phase response of SPM and their receptors in both circulating blood and the arterial wall in a rat angioplasty model. We found that the ratio of proresolving to pro-inflammatory lipid mediators (LM) in plasma decreased sharply 1 day after vascular injury, then increased slightly by day 7, while that in arteries remained depressed. Granulocyte expression of SPM receptors ALX/FPR2 and DRV2/GPR18, and a leukotriene B4 receptor BLT1 increased postinjury, while ERV1/ChemR23 expression was reduced early and then recovered by day 7. Importantly, we show unique arterial expression patterns of SPM receptors in the acute setting, with generally low levels through day 7 that contrasted sharply with that of the pro-inflammatory CCR2 receptor. Overall, these data document acute, time-dependent changes of LM biosynthesis and SPM receptor expression in plasma, leukocytes, and artery walls following acute vascular injury. A biochemical imbalance between inflammation and resolution LM pathways appears persistent 7 days after angioplasty in this model. These findings may help guide therapeutic approaches to accelerate vascular healing and improve the outcomes of vascular interventions for patients with advanced atherosclerosis.

Abstract

The 2024 Brain Tumor Segmentation Meningioma Radiotherapy (BraTS-MEN-RT) challenge aims to advance automated segmentation algorithms using the largest known multi-institutional dataset of radiotherapy planning brain MRIs with expert-annotated target labels for patients with intact or postoperative meningioma that underwent either conventional external beam radiotherapy or stereotactic radiosurgery. Each case includes a defaced 3D post-contrast T1-weighted radiotherapy planning MRI in its native acquisition space, accompanied by a single-label "target volume" representing the gross tumor volume (GTV) and any at-risk postoperative site. Target volume annotations adhere to established radiotherapy planning protocols, ensuring consistency across cases and institutions. For preoperative meningiomas, the target volume encompasses the entire GTV and associated nodular dural tail, while for postoperative cases, it includes at-risk resection cavity margins as determined by the treating institution. Case annotations were reviewed and approved by expert neuroradiologists and radiation oncologists. Participating teams will develop, containerize, and evaluate automated segmentation models using this comprehensive dataset. Model performance will be assessed using an adapted lesion-wise Dice Similarity Coefficient and the 95% Hausdorff distance. The top-performing teams will be recognized at the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention Conference in October 2024. Abstract

Gliomas are the most common malignant primary brain tumors in adults and one of the deadliest types of cancer. There are many challenges in treatment and monitoring due to the genetic diversity and high intrinsic heterogeneity in appearance, shape, histology, and treatment response. Treatments include surgery, radiation, and systemic therapies, with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) playing a key role in treatment planning and post-treatment longitudinal assessment. The 2024 Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) challenge on post-treatment glioma MRI will provide a community standard and benchmark for state-of-the-art automated segmentation models based on the largest expert-annotated post-treatment glioma MRI dataset. Challenge competitors will develop automated segmentation models to predict four distinct tumor sub-regions consisting of enhancing tissue (ET), surrounding non-enhancing T2/fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) hyperintensity (SNFH), non-enhancing tumor core (NETC), and resection cavity (RC). Models will be evaluated on separate validation and test datasets using standardized performance metrics utilized across the BraTS 2024 cluster of challenges, including lesion-wise Dice Similarity Coefficient and Hausdorff Distance. Abstract

Combining spin textures in ultra-thin films with conventional superconductors has emerged as a powerful and versatile platform for designing topologically non-trivial superconducting phases as well as spin-triplet Cooper pairs. As a consequence, two-dimensional magnet-superconductor hybrids (2D MSHs) are promising candidate systems to realize devices for topology-based quantum technologies and superconducting spintronics. So far, studies have focused mostly on systems hosting collinear ferromagnets or antiferromagnets. However, topologically non-trivial phases have been predicted to emerge in MSH systems with non-collinear spin textures as well. In this article, we present the experimental discovery of topological superconductivity in the MSH system Fe/Ta(110) where a magnetic spiral is realized in the Fe monolayer on the surface of the s-wave superconductor Ta. By combining low-temperature spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy measurements with theoretical modeling, we are able to conclude that the system is in a topological nodal-point superconducting phase with low-energy edge modes. Due to the non-collinear spin texture in our MSH system, these edge modes exhibit a magnetization direction-dependent dispersion. Furthermore, we identify direct signatures of Rashba spin-orbit coupling in the experimentally measured differential tunneling conductance. The present work realizes a non-collinear spin texture-based path to topological superconductivity.

Abstract

Graphlets of order $k$ in a graph $G$ are connected subgraphs induced by $k$ nodes (called $k$-graphlets) or by $k$ edges (called edge $k$-graphlets). They are among the interesting subgraphs in network analysis to get insights on both the local and global structure of a network. While several algorithms exist for discovering and enumerating graphlets, the cost per solution of such algorithms typically depends on the size of the graph $G$, or its maximum degree. In real networks, even the latter can be in the order of millions, whereas $k$ is typically required to be a small value. In this paper we provide the first algorithm to list all graphlets of order $k$ in a graph $G=(V,E)$ with an amortized cost per solution depending \emph{solely} on the order $k$, contrarily to previous approaches where the cost depends \emph{also} on the size of $G$ or its maximum degree. Specifically, we show that it is possible to list $k$-graphlets in $O(k^2)$ time per solution, and to list edge $k$-graphlets in $O(k)$ time per solution. Furthermore we show that, if the input graph has bounded degree, then the cost per solution for listing $k$-graphlets is reduced to $O(k)$. Whenever $k = O(1)$, as it is often the case in practical settings, these algorithms are the first to achieve constant time per solution.

Abstract

We describe the design and results from the BraTS 2023 Intracranial Meningioma Segmentation Challenge. The BraTS Meningioma Challenge differed from prior BraTS Glioma challenges in that it focused on meningiomas, which are typically benign extra-axial tumors with diverse radiologic and anatomical presentation and a propensity for multiplicity. Nine participating teams each developed deep-learning automated segmentation models using image data from the largest multi-institutional systematically expert annotated multilabel multi-sequence meningioma MRI dataset to date, which included 1000 training set cases, 141 validation set cases, and 283 hidden test set cases. Each case included T2, T2/FLAIR, T1, and T1Gd brain MRI sequences with associated tumor compartment labels delineating enhancing tumor, non-enhancing tumor, and surrounding non-enhancing T2/FLAIR hyperintensity. Participant automated segmentation models were evaluated and ranked based on a scoring system evaluating lesion-wise metrics including dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and 95% Hausdorff Distance. The top ranked team had a lesion-wise median dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 0.976, 0.976, and 0.964 for enhancing tumor, tumor core, and whole tumor, respectively and a corresponding average DSC of 0.899, 0.904, and 0.871, respectively. These results serve as state-of-the-art benchmarks for future pre-operative meningioma automated segmentation algorithms. Abstract

Upon completing the upgrade from one to six degrees of freedom of the Outdoor Shake Table at UCSD in 2019, forced vibration tests were carried out to identify the dynamic characteristics of the reaction mass and soil system. This report describes the motivation, execution, and results from such tests, which independently excited the reaction mass in four degrees of freedom: longitudinal, transverse, yaw, and vertical. The report discusses the frequency response curves and deformation patterns from which the natural frequencies, damping ratio, mode shapes, and rigid body motion were determined. The first objective of the study was to investigate if the dynamic properties of the system had dramatically changed after the upgrade by comparing the results to those from forced vibration tests performed 20 years ago, during the construction of the facility. In addition, most recent tests also contributed with results from the vertical degree of freedom, which had never been tested. The second objective was to obtain high-quality response data of the system that will be used to develop a high-fidelity computational model of the reaction mass in future research. A comparison of results showed a slight difference of 0.5Hz in the natural frequency of 2 degrees of freedom. Moreover, maximum displacements in the recent tests were overall larger than the previous ones with few exceptions. The report thoroughly discusses the several sources of discrepancy between the past and most recent results. Finally, test results allowed us to estimate the system's response if the shake table actuators were to be used at their maximum nominal capacity. Abstract

Using heterodyne transient grating spectroscopy, we observe a significant enhancement of exciton diffusion within a monolayer WSe$_2$ stacked on top of graphene. We further demonstrate that the diffusion dynamics can be optically tuned on the ultrafast time scale (i.e. a few picoseconds) by altering the photoexcited charge carrier density in graphene. The results reveal that, on a time scale of a few picoseconds, the effective diffusion constant in the WSe$_2$/graphene heterostructure is approximately 40 cm$^2 $/s, representing a substantial improvement over the 2 cm$^2 $/s typical for an isolated monolayer of WSe$_2$. The enhanced diffusion can be understood in terms of a transient screening of impurities, charge traps, and defect states in WSe$_2$ by photoexcited charge carriers in graphene. Furthermore, we observe that the diffusion within WSe$_2$ is affected by interlayer interactions, like charge transfer, exhibiting different dynamic states depending on the incident excitation fluence. These findings underscore the dynamic nature of screening and diffusion processes in heterostructures of 2D semiconductors and graphene and provide valuable insights for future applications of these systems in ultrafast optoelectronic devices.

30. Multi-scale modeling of Snail-mediated response to hypoxia in tumor progression

Abstract

Tumor cell migration within the microenvironment is a crucial aspect for cancer progression and, in this context, hypoxia has a significant role. An inadequate oxygen supply acts as an environmental stressor inducing migratory bias and phenotypic changes. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-scale mathematical model to analyze the pivotal role of Snail protein expression in the cellular responses to hypoxia. Starting from the description of single-cell dynamics driven by the Snail protein, we construct the corresponding kinetic transport equation that describes the evolution of the cell distribution. Subsequently, we employ proper scaling arguments to formally derive the equations for the statistical moments of the cell distribution, which govern the macroscopic tumor dynamics. Numerical simulations of the model are performed in various scenarios with biological relevance to provide insights into the role of the multiple tactic terms, the impact of Snail expression on cell proliferation, and the emergence of hypoxia-induced migration patterns. Moreover, quantitative comparison with experimental data shows the model's reliability in measuring the impact of Snail transcription on cell migratory potential. Abstract

Pediatric tumors of the central nervous system are the most common cause of cancer-related death in children. The five-year survival rate for high-grade gliomas in children is less than 20%. Due to their rarity, the diagnosis of these entities is often delayed, their treatment is mainly based on historic treatment concepts, and clinical trials require multi-institutional collaborations. Here we present the CBTN-CONNECT-DIPGR-ASNR-MICCAI BraTS-PEDs challenge, focused on pediatric brain tumors with data acquired across multiple international consortia dedicated to pediatric neuro-oncology and clinical trials. Abstract

Quantum computers have evolved from the theoretical realm into a race to large-scale implementations. This is due to the promise of revolutionary speedups, where achieving such speedup requires designing an algorithm that harnesses the structure of a problem using quantum mechanics. Yet many quantum programming languages today require programmers to reason at a low level of quantum gate circuitry. This presents a significant barrier to entry for programmers who have not yet built up an intuition about quantum gate semantics, and it can prove to be tedious even for those who have. In this paper, we present Qwerty, a new quantum programming language that allows programmers to manipulate qubits more expressively than gates, relegating the tedious task of gate selection to the compiler. Abstract

The flux of ultra-high energy cosmic rays reaching Earth above the ankle energy (5 EeV) can be described as a mixture of nuclei injected by extragalactic sources with very hard spectra and a low rigidity cutoff. Extragalactic magnetic fields existing between the Earth and the closest sources can affect the observed CR spectrum by reducing the flux of low-rigidity particles reaching Earth. We perform a combined fit of the spectrum and distributions of depth of shower maximum measured with the Pierre Auger Observatory including the effect of this magnetic horizon in the propagation of UHECRs in the intergalactic space. We find that, within a specific range of the various experimental and phenomenological systematics, the magnetic horizon effect can be relevant for turbulent magnetic field strengths in the local neighbourhood of order $B_{\rm rms}\simeq (50-100)\,{\rm nG}\,(20\rm{Mpc}/{d_{\rm s})( 100\,\rm{kpc}/L_{\rm coh}})^{1/2}$, with $d_{\rm s}$ the typical intersource separation and $L_{\rm coh}$ the magnetic field coherence length. When this is the case, the inferred slope of the source spectrum becomes softer and can be closer to the expectations of diffusive shock acceleration, i.e., $\propto E^{-2}$. An additional cosmic-ray population with higher source density and softer spectra, presumably also extragalactic and dominating the cosmic-ray flux at EeV energies, is also required to reproduce the overall spectrum and composition results for all energies down to 0.6~EeV., Comment: Matches published version

Abstract

Machine learning potentials (MLPs) are widely applied as an efficient alternative way to represent potential energy surfaces (PES) in many chemical simulations. The MLPs are often evaluated with the root-mean-square errors on the test set drawn from the same distribution as the training data. Here, we systematically investigate the relationship between such test errors and the simulation accuracy with MLPs on an example of a full-dimensional, global PES for the glycine amino acid. Our results show that the errors in the test set do not unambiguously reflect the MLP performance in different simulation tasks such as relative conformer energies, barriers, vibrational levels, and zero-point vibrational energies. We also offer an easily accessible solution for improving the MLP quality in a simulation-oriented manner, yielding the most precise relative conformer energies and barriers. This solution also passed the stringent test by the diffusion Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract

Heat-to-charge conversion efficiency of thermoelectric materials is closely linked to the entropy per charge carrier. Thus, magnetic materials are promising building blocks for highly efficient energy harvesters, as their carrier entropy is boosted by a spin degree of freedom. In this work, we investigate how this spin entropy impacts heat-to-charge conversion in A-type antiferromagnet CrSBr. We perform simultaneous measurements of electrical conductance and thermocurrent while changing magnetic order using temperature and magnetic field as tuning parameters. We find a strong enhancement of the thermoelectric power factor around the N\'eel temperature. We further reveal that the power factor at low temperature can be increased by up to 600% upon applying a magnetic field. Our results demonstrate that the thermoelectric properties of 2D magnets can be optimized by exploiting the sizeable impact of spin entropy and confirm thermoelectric measurements as a sensitive tool to investigate subtle magnetic phase transitions in low-dimensional magnets., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Monochromatic gamma-ray signals constitute a potential smoking gun signature for annihilating or decaying dark matter particles that could relatively easily be distinguished from astrophysical or instrumental backgrounds. We provide an updated assessment of the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to such signals, based on observations of the Galactic centre region as well as of selected dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We find that current limits and detection prospects for dark matter masses above 300 GeV will be significantly improved, by up to an order of magnitude in the multi-TeV range. This demonstrates that CTA will set a new standard for gamma-ray astronomy also in this respect, as the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, in particular due to its exquisite energy resolution at TeV energies and the adopted observational strategy focussing on regions with large dark matter densities. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date instrument response functions, and we thoroughly model the effect of instrumental systematic uncertainties in our statistical treatment.
