Context: Pertrochanteric hip fractures in sportive young adults are mainly caused by a high-energy trauma and treated in the same way as in the older population, using an osteosynthesis immediately followed by a rehabilitation program for several months. The current standard is not to remove osteosynthesis material, similar to the case of older patients. CasePresentation: A 45-year-old male cyclist experienced a right pertrochanteric femoral fracture, treated with cephalomedullary nails. After 9 months of adequate rehabilitation, weakness of the quadriceps musculature and functional complaints persisted, objectified through an isokinetic strength test and a significantly reduced score on the Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score questionnaire. The patient was unable to return to his previous level of cycling performance. Management and Outcome: After exclusion of structural bone complications, nerve injury, and central sensitization, the functional complaints and strength deficiency were hypothesized to be related to the osteosynthesis material. Therefore, the hardware was removed 9 months after the first surgery, and the rehabilitation was continued for another 20 weeks. Very soon after the removal of the hardware, the functional complaints disappeared with a remarkable improvement of the Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score. The isokinetic strength test showed complete recovery of muscle strength 20 weeks after osteosynthesis removal, and preinjury cycling performance values were obtained 9 months posthardware removal. Conclusion: Despite an adequate rehabilitation following a hip fracture, sporty young adults may fail to reach their previous level of functioning. Osteosynthesis removal may be indicated in this sportive population to reach complete muscle strength and functional recovery. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of acute ischemic preconditioning (IPC) on tennis skill and physical exercise performance, as well as to explore whether 7-day repeated IPC (RIPC) accelerated fatigue recovery after a simulated tennis match. Methods: Twenty-nine male tennis-specific current students were randomly allocated into 1 of 2 groups: SHAM (n = 14, 3 × 5 min at 20 mm Hg) and IPC (n = 15, 3 × 5 min at 220 mm Hg). Participants in both groups engaged in acute IPC and RIPC interventions. After the first acute IPC intervention, assessments were conducted to evaluate tennis-specific skills and overall physical exercise capacity. Following completion of chronic RIPC interventions, all participants competed in a simulated tennis match specifically designed to induce fatigue. To evaluate recovery from this induced fatigue, physical exercise capacity tests were conducted at 24 and 48 hours postmatch, allowing for an assessment of the participants' recovery capabilities over time. Results: After the first acute intervention, notable differences were observed between the IPC and SHAM groups in their performance on the repeated-sprint ability test. Specifically, the total times recorded were significantly shorter in the IPC group compared with the SHAM group (IPC: 109.05 [2.70] vs SHAM: 114.57 [7.45] s, P =.012), and this trend was also reflected in their best times (IPC: 4.20 [0.18] s vs SHAM: 4.39 [0.30] s, P =.042), indicating an immediate benefit of the IPC intervention on sprint performance. After a 7-day RIPC intervention, significant changes were noted in the SHAM group's performance metrics postmatch. There was an increase (P <.001) in fatigue index from 22% (8%) to 30% (9%) during repeated-sprint ability test and a decrease in serve speed from 120.2 (17.5) to 106.7 (13.0) km/h (P =.002) and knee peek torque from 196.0 (49.0) to 162.7 (39) N (extension, 60°/s, P <.001) in the SHAM group 24 hours postmatch, relative to the IPC group. Moreover, compared with the SHAM group, the IPC group showed a lower rate of perceived exertion during the match (P <.001) and a decrease in visual analog scale score (P =.026) 24 hours postmatch, suggesting enhanced recovery and reduced perception of pain relative to the SHAM group. Purpose: To assess the effect of whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) on postmatch recovery in basketball. Methods: Using a crossover design, 17 youth male players (age 16.2 [1.2] y, stature 190.5 [9.4] cm, body mass 79.2 [9.6] kg, experience 9.9 [3.9] y) completed 2 simulated matches, followed by WBC (4 min, −75 to − 85 °C) or a placebo intervention (CON). Countermovement-jump height, change-of-direction performance, 10- and 20-m sprint times, heart-rate variability (log-transformed squared root of the mean sum of the squared differences between R-R intervals [Ln-rMSSD]), muscle soreness, and perceived recovery (Perceived Recovery Status Scale [PRS]) were recorded at prematch, postmatch, postrecovery, and 24 hours postmatch. Additionally, Ln-rMSSD was recorded upon awakening on match day and the following morning. Results: Compared with CON, higher PRS values were reported in WBC at prematch and postrecovery (P ≤.026), while no significant between-interventions differences were found for any other measure (P >.05). Regarding the effect of time, our findings revealed that 20-m sprint times, Ln-rMSSD, and PRS deteriorated in both interventions from prematch to postmatch (ie, acute changes, P ≤.045), while muscle soreness worsened in WBC only (P ≤.003). Conversely, countermovement-jump height, change-of-direction, and 10-m sprint performance were unaffected by match play in the acute phase (P >.05), while none of the investigated measures showed impairments at 24 hours postmatch, compared with prematch (P >.05). Conclusions: Overall, these findings suggest that WBC was mostly ineffective for improving postexercise recovery in the investigated sample, with benefits observed for perceived recovery being potentially influenced by the participants' status at baseline (ie, higher prematch PRS scores in WBC compared with CON). Purpose: This study both investigated and compared Gaelic games players' and practitioners' perceptions of the importance of postexercise recovery strategies. Methods: Gaelic players (n = 1178 [n = 574 female], age 24.6 [6.6] y) and practitioners (n = 148 [n = 29 female], age 35.9 [8.7] y) completed a questionnaire assessing their perceptions of various postexercise recovery strategies (importance ranked out of 5 [1 "not important at all" to 5 "extremely important"]). Players were further categorized by playing standard into developmental (club/collegiate; n = 869) and national (intercounty; n = 309) levels and by sport: Gaelic football (n = 813), camogie/hurling (n = 342), and Gaelic handball (n = 23). Practitioners were categorized as sport coaches (n = 67), strength and conditioning staff (n = 34), nutrition staff (n = 15), and athletic rehabilitation staff (n = 32). Results: Gaelic players prevalently perceived sleep (76.4%), rehydration (72.5%), postexercise meal (48.4%), stretching (47.6%), active cool-down (25.1%), foam rolling (23.1%), and massage by therapist (22.6%) as "extremely important." Practitioners prevalently perceived sleep (90.1%), rehydration (83.6%), postexercise meal (76.6%), daytime naps (36.2%), stretching (25.4%), discussion with teammates (24.6%), and getting into nature (19.4%) as "extremely important." Conclusions: While strategies with well-documented efficacy such as sleep, nutrition, and rehydration were rated as most important, a distinct and possibly problematic disconnect exists between the perceived importance of many strategies and their empirically demonstrated effectiveness. For instance, active cool-downs and stretching were perceived as highly important despite prevailing evidence suggesting that their effects are often small in magnitude. Collectively, work promoting optimal recovery practices and aligning player-practitioner perspectives would be beneficial to maximize time and resource allocation and enhance player buy-in. Clinical Scenario: As of 2020, the lifetime prevalence of at least one self-reported concussion is 24.6%. Athletic trainers in all settings work with patients who are at risk of sustaining a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and developing persistent postconcussive symptoms. Aerobic exercise is emerging as an intervention for decreasing symptoms in patients who have sustained mTBI; however, the majority of research has been performed on pediatric patients. It is of interest whether aerobic exercise is an effective intervention for adult patients with mTBI. Focused Clinical Question: In adults who have sustained mTBI, does traditional therapy decrease symptoms more than aerobic exercise? Summary of Search: A systematic search of 4 databases was performed to answer this question. Three randomized controlled trials were identified that compared aerobic exercise to traditional therapy, which consists of physical and cognitive rest. Two studies found no significant differences in symptoms between the 2 groups while 1 study found decreased symptoms in the aerobic exercise group. Clinical Bottom Line: The current evidence is clear that there is no decrease in mTBI symptoms with traditional therapy as compared with aerobic exercise, with 1 study showing decreased symptoms with aerobic exercise. Purpose: This study investigated sex differences in self-reported causes, symptoms, and recovery strategies associated with underperformance in endurance athletes. Methods: A total of 82 athletes (40 women) meeting the inclusion criteria (performance level ≥tier 3, used training diaries, and experienced 1 or more periods of underperformance during their career) completed an online questionnaire. The questionnaire encompassed inquiries regarding load monitoring and experiences with underperformance, focusing on causes, symptoms, and recovery strategies. Results: The most frequently reported symptoms associated with underperformance included psychological (31%), physiological (23%), and health-related (12%) symptoms. Notably, female athletes were more likely to report psychological symptoms associated with underperformance (38% vs 25%, P =.01) compared with male athletes. The leading causes of underperformance comprised illness (21%), mental/emotional challenges (20%), training errors (12%), lack of recovery (10%), and nutritional challenges (5%). Female athletes reported nutritional challenges more frequently as the cause of underperformance compared with males (9% vs 1%, P =.01), whereas male athletes more often attributed underperformance to training errors (15% vs 9%, P =.03). Overall, 67% of athletes reported recovering from underperformance, with a tendency for more male than female athletes to recover (76% vs 58%, P =.07). Furthermore, a higher proportion of male than female athletes reported implementing changes in the training process as a recovery strategy (62% vs 35%, P =.02). Conclusions: This study offers valuable insights into sex differences in experiences with underperformance in endurance athletes. Background: Relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs) is a condition that is associated with negative health and performance outcomes in athletes. Insufficient energy intake relative to exercise energy expenditure, resulting in low energy availability, is the underlying cause, which triggers numerous adverse physiological consequences including several associated with musculoskeletal (MSK) health and neuromuscular performance. Purpose: This commentary aims to (1) discuss the health and performance implications of REDs on the skeletal and neuromuscular systems and (2) examine the role that MSK training (ie, strength and plyometric training) during treatment and return to performance following REDs might have on health and performance in athletes, with practical guidelines provided. Conclusions: REDs is associated with decreases in markers of bone health, lean body mass, maximal and explosive strength, and muscle work capacity. Restoration of optimal energy availability, mainly through an increase in energy intake, is the primary goal during the initial treatment of REDs with a return to performance managed by a multidisciplinary team of specialists. MSK training is an effective nonpharmacological component of treatment for REDs, which offers multiple long-term health and performance benefits, assuming the energy needs of athletes are met as part of their recovery. Supervised, prescribed, and gradually progressive MSK training should include a combination of resistance training and high-impact plyometric-based exercise to promote MSK adaptations, with an initial focus on achieving movement competency. No studies have reported ground reaction force (GRF) profiles of the repeated depth jump (DJ) protocols commonly used to study exercise-induced muscle damage. Furthermore, while compression garments (CG) may accelerate recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage, any effects on the repeated bout effect are unknown. Therefore, we investigated the GRF profiles of 2 repeated bouts of damage-inducing DJs and the effects of wearing CG for recovery. Nonresistance-trained males randomly received CG (n = 9) or placebo (n = 8) for 72 hours recovery, following 20 × 20 m sprints and 10 × 10 DJs from 0.6 m. Exercise was repeated after 14 days. Using a 3-way (set × bout × group) design, changes in GRF were assessed with analysis of variance and statistical parametric mapping. Jump height, reactive strength, peak, and mean propulsive forces declined between sets (P <.001). Vertical stiffness, contact time, force at zero velocity, and propulsive duration increased (P <.05). According to statistical parametric mapping, braking (17%–25% of the movement) and propulsive forces (58%–81%) declined (P <.05). During the repeated bout, peak propulsive force and duration increased (P <.05), while mean propulsive force (P <.05) and GRF from 59% to 73% declined (P <.001). The aim of this study was to quantify physical activity and sedentary behavior in older adults recovering from hip fracture and to identify groups based on movement patterns. In this cross-sectional cohort study, older adults (≥70 years) were included 3 months after surgery for proximal femoral fracture. Patients received an accelerometer for 7 days. Demographics and outcomes related to physical function, mobility, cognitive functions, quality of life, and hip fracture were assessed. In total, 43 patients with sufficient accelerometer wear time were included. Across all groups, participants engaged in very low levels of physical activity, spending an average of 11 hr/day in prolonged sedentary behavior. Based on the extracted components from a principal component analysis, three groups with substantial differences in levels of physical activity and sedentary behavior could be distinguished. Context: Rehabilitation after an anterior cruciate ligament injury is recommended to be started soon after the injury. When surgery is required, research supports the delivery of physiotherapy before anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (prehabilitation) to optimize recovery and positive outcomes. Individuals attending prehabilitation have never been questioned regarding their adherence to prehabilitation, perception of utility in meeting needs, upcoming events, or anticipated recovery goals. Design: Mixed methods cross-sectional study: Methods: 25 individuals before anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (43% of eligible individuals from 12 clinics during the delivery period) were surveyed on their mindset and recovery expectancies. Semistructured interviews conducted in 9 of 25 participants assessed their lived experience of prehabilitation. Results: Participants reported that preventing a reinjury (96% of responses) and feeling confident during daily activities about their knee (92%) were the higher rating expectations at this stage of their treatment course. Three themes were developed from the interviews and analyses. (1) Participants reported that prehabilitation was a period full of challenges with memories of the injury and uncertainties. (2) They viewed prehabilitation as a step to move forward by finding support and self-motivating. (3) They believed that prehabilitation would have positive impacts on the treatment outcomes. Participants were confident that prehabilitation would accelerate the recovery of muscle volume (88%) and strength (84%). Purpose: Concussion management is shifting away from a rest-is-best approach, as data now suggest that exercise-is-medicine for this mild brain injury. Despite this, we have limited data on habitual physical activity following concussion. Therefore, our objective was to quantify accelerometer-measured physical activity and sedentary time in children with concussion (within the first month of injury) and healthy controls. We hypothesized that children with concussion would be less active than their healthy peers. Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of prospectively collected accelerometer data. Our sample included children with concussion (n = 60, 31 females) and historical controls (n = 60) matched for age, sex, and season of accelerometer wear. Results: Children with concussion were significantly more sedentary than controls (mean difference [MD], 38.3 min/d, P =.006), and spent less time performing light physical activity (MD, −19.5 min/d, P =.008), moderate physical activity (MD, −9.8 min/d, P <.001), and vigorous physical activity (MD, −12.0 min/d, P <.001); these differences were observed from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Sex-specific analyses identified that girls with concussion were less active and more sedentary than both boys with concussion (P =.010) and healthy girls (P <.010). Conclusion: There is an activity deficit observed within the first month of pediatric concussion. Physical activity guidelines should address this while considering sex effects. Purpose: To evaluate the relationship between items of the Short Recovery and Stress Scale (SRSS) related to physical stress and recovery and the biomarker creatine kinase (CK) in professional handball. Methods: CK and SRSS items (physical performance capability, overall recovery, muscular stress, and overall stress) were assessed in an observational study of 16 adult male professional handball players from a team in the highest German league during the 2019–20 preseason. Their preseason training schedule included several microcycles, each consisting of 3 consecutive days of intense training followed by a rest day. On 5 of these rest days, when players were classified as nonrested, and the 5 immediately following days, when players were classified as rested, players completed the SRSS between 8:00 and 9:00 AM, followed by blood sampling. Correlations between SRSS items were performed using Kendall τ. The relationship between each SRSS item and CK levels over time was examined using a mixed-effects model with a random intercept. Results: CK levels and SRSS stress items were significantly higher and SRSS recovery items were significantly lower in nonrested players. SRSS items were significantly positively or negatively correlated (all items: P <.001) and showed a significant effect indicating lower CK levels in rested players (all items: P ≤.001; η p 2 =.1 −.32). Conclusions: The investigated SRSS items may be a viable option for assessing muscle recovery in adult male professional handball players in a cost-effective and noninvasive manner. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate acute psychophysiological responses to repeated-sprint training in hypoxia (RSH) combined with whole-body cryotherapy (WBC). Method: Sixteen trained cyclists performed 3 sessions in randomized order: RSH, WBC-RSH (WBC pre-RSH), and RSH-WBC (WBC post-RSH). RSH consisted of 3 sets of 5 × 10-second sprints with 20-second recovery at a simulated altitude of 3000 m. Power output, muscle oxygenation (tissue saturation index), heart-rate variability, and recovery perception were analyzed. Sleep quality was assessed on the nights following test sessions and compared with a control night using nocturnal ActiGraphy and heart-rate variability. Results: Power output did not differ between the conditions (P =.27), while the decrease in tissue saturation index was reduced for WBC-RSH compared to RSH-WBC in the last set. In both conditions with WBC, the recovery perception was higher compared to RSH (WBC-RSH: +15.4%, and RSH-WBC: +21.9%, P <.05). The number of movements during the RSH-WBC night was significantly lower than for the control night (−18.7%, P <.01) and WBC-RSH (−14.9%, P <.05). RSH led to a higher root mean square of the successive differences of R-R intervals and high-frequency band during the first hour of sleep compared to the control night (P <.05) and RSH-WBC (P <.01). Conclusions: Inclusion of WBC in an RSH session did not modify the power output but could improve prolonged performance in hypoxia by maintaining muscle oxygenation. Adaptations to resistance training and subsequent performance can be undermined by inadequate interset recovery. Methods typically used to monitor recovery were developed for longitudinal use, making them time-inefficient within singular exercise bouts. If valid, perceptual recovery status (PRS) may be used as an efficient and inexpensive assessment tool to monitor individual recovery. Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the validity of PRS on monitoring recovery during a high-intensity back-squat session. Methods: Ten healthy men participated in the 2-session study (separated by at least 48 h). Session 1 included anthropometrics, PRS familiarization, and a 1-repetition-maximum back squat. Session 2 included a high-intensity protocol (5 sets of 5 repetitions; 5-min interset recovery; 85% of 1-repetition maximum). PRS was obtained before the first set and during the last 30 seconds of each 5-minute recovery; rating of perceived exertion (RPE) was also collected. A linear position transducer collected mean barbell velocity (MBV). Repeated-measures correlations assessed the common intraindividual relationships of PRS scores to intraset MBV and RPE, respectively. Results: A very large, positive correlation appeared between PRS and MBV (r [95% CI] =.778 [.613 to.878]; P <.0001). A large, negative correlation emerged between PRS and RPE (r [95% CI] = −.549 [−.737 to −.282]; P <.001). Conclusions: Results indicate that PRS can be a means for practitioners to monitor individualized recovery. PRS tracked well with RPE, strengthening its utility in a practitioner-based setting. Findings provide insight into the practicality of PRS for recovery monitoring. Purpose: This study aimed to comprehensively investigate the global implementation of flywheel training (FT) by basketball strength and conditioning (S&C) coaches in various contexts, encompassing daily practice, games, and sessions. Methods: Survey data were collected from 117 basketball S&C coaches who participated in a 24-question online survey. The survey was structured into 6 key areas, including country and competition, S&C coach context, training methodology, flywheel and competition, postactivation performance enhancement, and recovery. Results: Notably, all respondents emphasized the necessity of a familiarization period with flywheel technology, with a substantial 96% indicating that FT yielded improved player performance on the court. The predominant mention was the conical pulley system. During the season, the prevalent approach involved integrating FT into training twice a week, allocating <15 minutes per session, often in conjunction with traditional strength training. A diverse array of lower-body closed kinetic chain exercises were reported, encompassing squats, decelerations, and backward lunges. Intriguingly, FT implementation on match days was unlikely (77%), with the primary aims cited as injury prevention (34%) and enhancing players' strength levels during various phases of the regular season (27%). Conclusions: Recognizing its inherent limitations, this descriptive study provides valuable contextual insights and practical applications for professional basketball practitioners grappling with the utilization of FT. Context: Contusion and soft tissue injuries are common in sports. Photobiomodultion, light and laser therapy, is an effective aid to increase healing rates and improve function after various injury mechanisms. However, it is unclear how well photobiomodulation improves function after a contusion soft tissue injury. This study aimed to determine the effects of a pulsed red and blue photobiomodulation light patch on muscle function following a human thigh contusion injury. Design: Single-blinded randomized control trial design. Methods: We enrolled 46 healthy participants. Participants completed 5 visits on consecutive days. On the first visit, participants completed a baseline isokinetic quadriceps strength testing protocol at 60°/s and 180°/s. On the second visit, participants were struck in the rectus femoris of the anterior thigh with a tennis ball from a serving machine. Immediately following, participants were treated for 30 minutes with an active or placebo photobiomodulation patch (CareWear light patch system, CareWear Corp). Following the treatment, participants completed the same isokinetic quadriceps strength testing protocol. Participants completed the treatment and isokinetic quadriceps strength test during the following daily visits. We normalized the data by calculating the percent change from baseline. We used a mixed model analysis of covariance, with sex as a covariate, to determine the difference between treatment groups throughout the acute recovery process. Results: We found the active photobiomodulation treatment significantly increased over the placebo group, quadriceps peak torque during the 180°/s test (P =.030), and average power during both the 60°/s (P =.041) and 180°/s (P ≤.001) assessments. The mean peak torque and average power of 180°/s, at day 4, exceeded the baseline levels by 8.9% and 16.8%, respectively. Purpose: To assess the pain, swelling, infection, and alteration in sensation following the flapless placement of zygomatic implants guided by dynamic navigation. Materials and Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted on 20 patients. In group 1, the placement of the zygomatic implants was carried out without reflecting a mucoperiosteal flap (flapless). In group 2, a mucoperiosteal flap was raised (flapped). Two zygomatic implants were placed in each patient (one on each side) under local anesthesia, guided by dynamic navigation. Postoperative evaluations included pain (using the visual analogue scale [VAS]), swelling (using standard measurements), maxillary sinus infection, and alteration of sensation (using mechanical stimuli, thermal threshold detection, and a two-point discrimination test). The assessments were carried out at 2 days, 1 week, and then 1, 2, and 3 months postoperatively. Results: In group 1, all implants except for one were successfully osseointegrated. Immediate postoperative pain and swelling were both significantly greater in group 2 (P < .01). No alteration in sensation was detected in any case in the two groups. There were a total of three cases of chronic sinusitis: one in group 1 and two in group 2. This study evaluated the relationship between the muscle mass of the gluteus medius (GM) and skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) measured in patients with hip fractures. In this study, 141 patients with hip fractures were divided into those with high or low SMI. The GM index (GMI) was calculated by dividing the GM by the square of the height in meters. The correlation between GMI and SMI was subsequently analyzed, and cutoff values for determining the loss of skeletal muscle mass were calculated using the receiver operating characteristic curve. GMI and SMI showed a positive correlation for both sexes (male: r =.890, female: r =.626, p <.001). The GMI cutoff values were 19.460 cm2/m2 for males and 17.850 cm2/m2 for females. Purpose: Monitoring is a fundamental part of the training process to guarantee that the programmed training loads are executed by athletes and result in the intended adaptations and enhanced performance. A number of monitoring tools have emerged during the last century in sport. These tools capture different facets (eg, psychophysiological, physical, biomechanical) of acute training bouts and chronic adaptations while presenting specific advantages and limitations. Therefore, there is a need to identify what tools are more efficient in each sport context for better monitoring of training process. Methods and Results: We present and discuss the fine-tuning approach for training monitoring, which consists of identifying and combining the best monitoring tools with experts' knowledge in different sport settings, designed to improve (1) the control of actual training loads and (2) understanding of athletes' training adaptations. Instead of using single-tool approaches or merely subjective decision making, the identification of the best combination of monitoring tools to assist experts' decisions in each specific context (ie, triangulation) is necessary to better understand the link between acute and chronic adaptations and their impact on health and performance. Future studies should elaborate on the identification of the best combination of monitoring tools for each specific sport setting. This paper is aimed at comprehensively reviewing olfactory and gustatory disorders caused by SARS-CoV-2 in children and adults. An electronic and manual search was done on three data bases: MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science. Inclusion criteria included publications written in English, involving humans in the age range of 0 to 99 years that were captured by a controlled vocabulary of thesaurus terms. Olfactory and gustatory disorders rates in COVID-19 ranged from 22% to 71.9% in adults and 16.6% to 25.8% in children. Olfactory and gustatory disorders might appear as the first symptom, and in adults might even be the only symptom (4.8% to 10%). Anosmia is the most common olfactory disorder and hypogeusia is the most common gustatory disorder. In 33% to 89% of cases, olfactory and gustatory disorders resolve spontaneously within a few weeks, coinciding with the resolution of other COVID-19 symptoms, both in adults and children. However, in some patients, olfactory and gustatory disorders persist beyond the resolution of other symptoms. Notably, children generally experience a swifter and more favorable recovery compared to adults. The precise pathogenesis underlying olfactory and gustatory disorders in the context of COVID-19 remains unclear and is likely multifactorial. Presently, no established treatment protocol exists for olfactory and gustatory disorders and current treatments reviewed lack robust evidence and are not readily available for clinical use. Olfactory training represents the only therapy currently recommended by international authorities. Pediatric practitioners and general dental practitioners should be aware of olfactory and gustatory disorders in both pediatric and adult populations, including their biologic mechanisms, treatment options, and recovery rates. Purpose: To investigate the influence of menstrual-cycle (MC) phase on measures of recovery status, that is, resting heart rate, perceived sleep quality, and physical and mental readiness to train, among female endurance athletes. Methods: Daily data were recorded during 1 to 4 MCs (ie, duration ≥21 and ≤35 d, ovulatory, luteal phase ≥10 d) of 41 trained-to-elite-level female endurance athletes (mean [SD]: age 27 [8] y, weekly training: 9 [3] h). Resting heart rate was assessed daily using a standardized protocol, while perceived sleep quality and physical and mental readiness to train were assessed using a visual analog scale (1–10). Four MC phases (early follicular phase [EFP], late follicular phase, ovulatory phase, and midluteal phase [MLP]) were determined using the calendar-based counting method and urinary ovulation-prediction test. Data were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models. Results: Resting heart rate was significantly higher in MLP (1.7 beats·min−1, P =.006) compared with EFP without significant differences between the other MC phases. Perceived sleep quality was impaired in MLP compared with late follicular phase (−0.3, P =.035). Physical readiness to train was lower both in ovulatory phase (−0.6, P =.015) and MLP (−0.5, P =.026) compared with EFP. Mental readiness to train did not show any significant differences between MC phases (P >.05). Conclusions: Although significant, the findings had negligible to small effect sizes, indicating that MC phase is likely not the main determinant of changes in measures of recovery status but, rather, one of the many possible stressors. Intellectual functioning impacts defendants' competence to stand trial, though research on this population remains limited. This study replicated and advanced prior work, focusing on defendants' demographic, clinical, cognitive, and criminal justice variables and their association with length of hospitalization and restoration determinations. Participants were 74 male and female criminal defendants in a midwestern state who were adjudicated incompetent to stand trial, had a diagnosis related to intellectual deficits, and completed competency restoration. Most defendants (83.7%) were restored to competency. Demographic factors were unrelated to restoration outcomes; violence of alleged offense predicted shorter hospitalization. Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve analyses determined an IQ score cut-off of 63.5 for which participants were of greater likelihood to be determined restored, providing guidance on the likelihood of restoration for defendants with intellectual disability related diagnoses. For the past years, Ecuador has been transitioning away from a hospital-based model of mental healthcare to one that is community-centred. However, challenges associated with hospital-based models endure, notably financial burden faced by those with severe mental health problems (SMHPs) due to labour market discrimination. Employment access for this group is often disregarded in policy planning, despite evidence of its benefits on mental health. Huertomanías, an urban garden initiative in Ecuador founded in 2015, works with individuals with SMHPs, providing work, income, and social inclusion. A case study using a participatory approach was carried out to explore factors that impact the recovery of people with SMHPs. Twelve participants engaged in diverse stages of the research, where several participatory activities were conducted including cognitive mapping, a photovoice project, and interviews. The analysis employed a thematic approach leading to four categories of impact within the urban garden: autonomy (financial and personal), interpersonal relations and relation with the environment, mental health, and family dynamics. A final category of impact was established encompassing external factors (family support and public policy and healthcare services) that influence recovery. Findings suggest that the urban garden promotes autonomy and active participation within society, improves mental health, and transforms family dynamics. Further, this study highlights the importance of community-based mental healthcare (CBMHC), emphasising the need of public policies and healthcare in promoting autonomy through employment and community-centred services. Background: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a surgical procedure to improve the quality of life of patients with osteoarthritis. However, postoperative recovery can be difficult due to sleep disturbance, such as poor sleep quality, and postsurgical pain. Purpose: The aim of this systematic review was to examine recent evidence regarding changes in sleep quality after TKA and to explore factors affecting the postoperative recovery process. Methods: This systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. We screened the PubMed, Google Scholar, ScopeMed, and Science Direct databases in December 2022 using the keywords sleep , total knee replacement surgery , knee arthroplasty , and sleep disruptions for relevant articles published between 2011 and 2022. Seven studies met all inclusion criteria and were included in the final sample for analysis. Results: Findings revealed that sleep disturbance was common during the early stages of the TKA recovery period and may be related to pain. After three months, sleep quality improved and pain intensity decreased. Three studies found a correlation between sleep and pain; however, another three studies did not. Conclusion: Health professionals, including surgical nurses, should be aware of the potential impact of TKA on sleep quality and understand, assess, and manage sleep disturbance and pain to provide comprehensive care for their patients and enhance recovery. Although an extensive body of research examines the implications of climate change for various aspects of human health, little conceptual or empirical work has focused on how climate change may affect addiction recovery. This paper addresses this gap by identifying probable pathways through which climate change may impact recovery, drawing on environmental, public health, and recovery research. Applying the theory of recovery capital, I outline the potential effects of climate change on social, physical, human, and cultural recovery domains. For example, in the domain of social capital, extreme weather and climate-related displacement are likely to make it more challenging for people in recovery to attend social events and support groups, though the use of digital support services may partially mitigate negative impacts. I synthesize this research in a model of probable pathways through which climate change will affect recovery capital and recovery outcomes, highlighting the ways in which marginalization related to factors such as race, income, and age is likely to shape the magnitude of effects. Building from this model, I discuss research implications, including the need for qualitative studies that examine how people engage as resilient actors pursuing recovery in the face of this ongoing global crisis, as well as quantitative studies that test hypotheses about the specific links between climate change and recovery capital. This paper concludes with implications for practice at individual, organizational, and societal levels, describing actions that service providers and people in recovery can take to build recovery capital while pursuing climate justice activism. People who can get pregnant who use drugs face disproportionate harms such as violence, exploitation and trauma and have unmet reproductive health needs as they have the greatest burden of unintended pregnancy (>75%). Recovery community centers (RCCs) provide recovery support services and are primarily staffed with people with lived experience using drugs. RCCs employ recovery coaches who are entrusted with helping participants improve their recovery capital, health, and wellbeing through person-centered strengths-based approaches. Although reproductive health and the prevention of unintended pregnancy can greatly impact all domains of recovery capital, recovery coaches generally do not have training to address this complex issue. We aimed to fill this gap by co-creating and evaluating a bundled model as an intervention tailored for RCCs (training & low-barrier resources including pregnancy tests, prenatal vitamins, and emergency contraception) to promote more equitable outcomes in reproductive health. We described the training and used mixed methods to assess pre-post knowledge, belief, and comfort with the bundled model (n = 20) and further explored perceptions of the model qualitatively to inform future iterations (n = 58). Results included significant gains in all three domains following the training, as well as favorable perceptions that the model will enhance recovery capital. Most were empowered to champion the model, asking for more information about the three resources, perinatal health, and referral information. We seek to begin to expand the theoretical construct of recovery capital by pilot testing an intervention to promote recovery through enhancing reproductive health and justice for people who use drugs (PWUD) who can get pregnant. Background: As family members affect patient outcomes following open‐heart surgery, the objective was to provide updated knowledge on family involvement in to guide future interventions facilitating family involvement. Aim: The aim was to explore and describe the experiences and actions of important situations of family involvement asexpressed by patients who underwent elective open‐heart surgery in Sweden. Methodological Design and Justification: The critical incident technique (CIT) was used, which is a qualitative research method suitable for clinical problems when a phenomenon is known but the experiences and consequences of it are not. Ethical Issues and Approval: Considerations for patient integrity were made during the recruitment phase by ensuring that voluntary informed consent was obtained in two steps. Research Methods: Individual interviews were conducted with 35 patients who underwent open‐heart surgery in Sweden in 2023. Important situations were analysed according to the CIT method. Results: Two main areas emerged: Patients described important situations of family involvement as experiences of mutual dependency while also being independent individuals. These experiences led to balancing healing and risk‐taking activities as a family. The positive consequences of family involvement described by patients included improved recovery through practical help at home and emotional support. Conclusions: As complements to preserving the existing positive aspects of family involvement, social support screening, the establishment of individualised visitation policies and the provision of professional and peer support earlier can improve patient recovery following open‐heart surgery. This study investigated the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) compared to treatment as usual in managing psychotic symptoms, emotional dysregulation, recovery and psychological flexibility in inpatients with primary psychoses. The Primary outcome assessed the positive and negative syndrome scale, while the secondary outcomes were to assess difficulties in the emotion regulation scale, recovery assessment scale and acceptance and action questionnaire. An open‐label, two‐arm parallel randomized controlled trial was conducted. Participants diagnosed with primary psychoses were randomly assigned to either the ACT (n = 33) or treatment‐as‐usual (n = 32) group. The intervention included six structured sessions of ACT. ACT significantly reduced psychotic symptoms from 128 to 104 (Z = 5.01) compared to treatment as usual from 130 to 117 (Z = 4.88). Emotional regulation improved significantly in the ACT group from 73 to 55 (Z = 4.835) compared to treatment as usual from 73 to 70 (Z = 2.406). Recovery increased in the ACT group from 50 to 88 (Z = 5.01) compared to treatment as usual from 51 to 61 (Z = 4.93). Psychological flexibility improved in the ACT group from 33 to 25 (Z = 4.98) compared to treatment as usual from 33 to 31 (Z = 4.75). Between‐group differences after intervention were significant for psychotic symptoms, emotional regulation, recovery and psychological flexibility (Z = 2.356, 4.652, 3.881 and 4.453, respectively). Accordingly, the current study demonstrates the effectiveness of ACT in reducing psychotic symptoms and improving emotional regulation, recovery and psychological flexibility in patients with primary psychoses. Integrating ACT into standard care protocols can enhance treatment outcomes, offering a comprehensive approach to managing complex mental health conditions. Frequent presentations to emergency departments contribute to increased service demands and healthcare costs. Literature suggests these adult presentations may be influenced by childhood adversity. This qualitatively driven, mixed methods study explored the self‐perceived role of childhood adversity in the health of adults who frequently attended Australian Emergency Departments and their perceptions of the healthcare they received. Data were collected using validated instruments and semi‐structured interviews with 12 purposefully sampled adults who frequently attended emergency departments. Qualitative data were analysed using interpretive phenomenological analysis. Three major themes were identified—The experience of childhood adversity: articulating challenges related to childhood trauma, and the subsequent impacts on participants' health, behaviours, relationships and sense of control; Pursuing safety: exploring action participants took to keep themselves and others safe, with this requirement extending into adulthood and influencing Emergency Department presentations; and Seeking humanising healthcare: identifying challenges participants experienced while seeking care in the Emergency Department. Participants perceived their mental health to be profoundly affected by their past experiences of trauma, leaving them feeling vulnerable at times and more likely to experience re‐traumatisation in the Emergency Department. Feelings of stigmatisation during Emergency Department encounters led participants to employ self‐protection strategies creating further barriers to recovery. Participants described Emergency Departments as often failing to comprehensively address their healthcare needs. They offered suggestions for more effective care interventions. Findings highlight the need for further research to inform policy and practice when designing and implementing interventions for these adults. Peer support is a collaborative practice where people with lived experience of mental health conditions engage in supporting like‐minded. Peer support impacts on personal recovery and empowerment and creates value at an organisational level. However, the implementation of peer support into existing mental health services is often impeded by barriers embedded in organisational culture and support in role expectations. Non‐peer professionals' recovery orientation and attitudes towards peer support workers (PSWs) are essential factors in the implementation of peer support, and this study explored non‐peer professionals' understanding of recovery and their attitudes towards PSWs joining existing community mental health teams in one region of Denmark. In total, 17 non‐peer professionals participated in three focus groups. Thematic analysis led to three themes: (1) Recovery is a process of "getting better" and balancing personal and clinical perspectives; (2) Realising recovery‐oriented practice: a challenging task with conflicting values; and (3) Expectations and concerns about peer support workers joining the team. Recovery‐oriented practice faces challenging conditions in contemporary mental health services due to a dominant focus on biomedical aspects in care and treatment. Implementation facilitators and barriers in the employment of PSWs point towards fundamental aspects that must be present when employing PSWs in an organisation. The issues described leading up to the employment of PSWs reflected in this study underpin the importance of preparing an organisation for the employment of PSWs based on the available knowledge. Background: In the United States, 35% of all pregnancy‐related deaths occur between 24 h and 6 weeks after delivery, yet the first outpatient visit is not typically scheduled until 6 weeks postpartum. Thus, the ability to independently navigate this period is critical to maternal well‐being and safety. However, previous research suggests that many women feel unprepared to manage the challenges they encounter during this time, and there is a current need to synthesize the existing evidence. Therefore, the purpose of this integrative review is to describe parent‐identified gaps in preparation for the postpartum period in the United States. Methods: Using the Integrative Review framework by Whittemore and Knafl, a systematic search of Medline, CINAHL, PsychInfo, Web of Science, and a hand‐search was conducted for peer‐reviewed articles published in English between 1995 and 2023. Results were reported according to PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Studies that met eligibility criteria were synthesized in a literature matrix. Results: Twenty‐two studies met inclusion criteria. Four themes were identified: Mental Health Concerns, Physical Concerns, Infant Feeding and Care Concerns, and General Concerns and Recommendations. Many women, regardless of parity, reported feeling unprepared for numerous postpartum experiences, including depression, anxiety, physical recovery, breastfeeding, and infant care. Parents reported difficulty differentiating normal postpartum symptoms from complications. Hospital discharge teaching was viewed as simultaneously overwhelming and inadequate. Parent recommendations included the need for earlier and more comprehensive postpartum preparation during pregnancy, delivered in multiple formats and settings. Parents also reported the need for earlier postpartum visits and improved outpatient support. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that many parents in the United States feel unprepared to navigate a wide variety of emotional, physical, breastfeeding, and infant‐care experiences. Future research should explore innovative educational approaches to postpartum preparation during pregnancy as well as outpatient programs to bridge the current gaps in postpartum care. Background and aims: Emergency departments (EDs) provide an opportunity to identify people at risk of overdose and reduce the risk. We evaluated the effect of an ED behavioral intervention delivered by peer recovery support specialists (PRSSs) on non‐fatal opioid overdose. Design: Two‐arm, randomized trial. Setting: Two EDs in Rhode Island, USA. Participants: ED patients presenting with an opioid overdose, complications of opioid use disorder or a recent history of opioid overdose (November 2018–May 2021). Among 648 participants, the mean age was 36.9 years, 68.2% were male and 68.5% were White. Intervention and comparator: Participants were randomized to receive a behavioral intervention from a PRSS (n = 323) or a licensed clinical social worker (LICSW) (n = 325). PRSS and LICSW used evidence‐based interviewing and intervention techniques, informed by their lived experience (PRSS) or clinical theory and practice (LICSW). Measurements We identified non‐fatal opioid overdoses in the 18 months following the ED visit through linkage to statewide emergency medical services data using a validated case definition. The primary outcome was any non‐fatal opioid overdose during the 18‐month follow‐up period. Findings Among 323 participants randomized to the PRSS arm, 81 (25.1%) had a non‐fatal opioid overdose during follow‐up, compared with 95 (29.2%) of 325 participants randomized to the LICSW arm (P = 0.24). There was no statistically significant difference in the effectiveness of randomization to the PRSS arm versus the LICSW arm on the risk of non‐fatal opioid overdose, adjusting for the history of previous overdose (relative risk = 0.86, 95% confidence interval = 0.67–1.11). Conclusions: In Rhode Island, USA, over one‐in‐four emergency department patients at high risk of overdose experience a non‐fatal opioid overdose in the 18 months post‐discharge. We found no evidence that the risk of non‐fatal opioid overdose differs for emergency department patients receiving a behavioral intervention from a peer recovery support specialist versus a licensed clinical social worker. Aim: To investigate the factors affecting postoperative frailty and the relationship between frailty and postoperative recovery in patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery. Design: The study was descriptive, cross‐sectional, and predictive. Methods: Data were collected by researchers in a university research and application hospital cardiovascular surgery inpatient clinic between March 2022 and March 2023. Sociodemographic‐Clinical Characteristics Form, Comorbidity Index, Edmonton Frail Scale, Postoperative Recovery, and Nutritional Risk Screening were used to collect the data. Results: Of the 145 patients included in the study, 65.51% (n = 95) were male and the mean age was 62.02 ± 10.16 years. While frailty was not found to be significant by age group, it was found that women had more comorbidities and were more frail than men. It was found that 17.2% (n = 25) of patients had a history of falls before surgery, 26.2% (n = 38) had a fear of falling after surgery and 17.24% (n = 25) had rehospitalisations. While postoperative recovery index predicted fraility by 34% in patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery; general symptoms and psychological symptoms, which are the sub‐dimensions of the postoperative recovery index and comorbidity and, fear of falling after surgery predicted frailty by 61%. The order of importance of variables on fraility: general symptoms (β = 0.297), fear of falling (β = 0.222), psychological symptoms (β = 0.218), Charlson Comorbidity Index (β = 0.183). Patient or Public Contribution: This study clarifies the role of frailty as an important factor influencing the recovery process in patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery. The findings show that frailty has a determining effect on postoperative recovery in these patients. Among the factors affecting frailty status, comorbidities, fear of postoperative falls, and postoperative general and psychological symptoms were found to contribute. These findings emphasise that these factors should be taken into account when assessing and managing the postoperative recovery process. Understanding these factors that influence postoperative frailty is crucial for patient care. Recognising the multifaceted nature of frailty, personalised interventions are needed to improve patient care and postoperative outcomes. Context In 2020, 13.6 million children under 5 years suffered from severe acute malnutrition (SAM)/wasting. Standard ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTFs) improve polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) status but contain suboptimal amounts of omega-3 (n-3) PUFAs with unbalanced n-6-to-n-3 PUFA ratios. Objectives The aim was to compare the effects of RUTFs with different essential fatty acid contents on PUFA status, neurodevelopmental, and clinical outcomes (mortality, comorbidities, and recovery) of children with severe wasting. Data Sources Twelve databases, trial repositories, and article references with no publication limitations. Data Extraction Ten studies from randomized, quasi, and cluster-randomized controlled trials providing RUTFs as home treatment to children 6–59 months with SAM/wasting were included. Data Analysis Plasma phospholipid eicosapentaenoic acid content was higher in children receiving RUTF with altered essential fatty acid contents compared with standard RUTF (0.20 [0.15–0.25], P < 0.00001). Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) status only improved in children receiving RUTF with added fish oil (0.33 [0.15–0.50], P = 0.0003). The Malawi Developmental Assessment tool (MDAT) global development and problem-solving assessment scores were higher in global assessment and gross motor domains in children receiving added fish oil compared with standard formulation (0.19 [0.0–0.38] and 0.29 [0.03–0.55], respectively). Children receiving high-oleic-acid RUTF (lowering the n-6:n-3 PUFA ratio of the RUTF) with or without fish oil had significantly higher scores in social domains compared with those receiving the standard formulation (0.16 [0.00–0.31] and 0.24 [0.09–0.40]). Significantly higher mortality risk was found in children receiving a standard formulation compared with RUTF with a lower n-6:n-3 PUFA ratio (0.79 [0.67–0.94], P = 0.008). Conclusion Although lowering n-6:n-3 PUFA ratios did not increase plasma DHA, it improved specific neurodevelopmental scores and mortality due to lower linoleic acid (high-oleic-acid peanuts), higher alpha-linolenic acid (altered oil), or both. Additional preformed n-3 long-chain PUFAs (fish oil) with RUTF improved the children's DHA status, neurodevelopmental outcomes, and weight-for-height z score. More research is needed regarding cost, availability, stability, acceptability, and the appropriate amount of n-3 long-chain PUFAs required in RUTFs for the best clinical outcomes. Background: Non‐suicidal self‐injury (NSSI) is a significant public health concern. Research and treatment interventions largely focus on stopping self‐injury. People who self‐injure do not necessarily equate recovery to cessation. Qualitative accounts allow greater understanding of personal recovery narratives. This study aimed to synthesise personal conceptualisations of NSSI recovery. Methods: Participants had lived experience of NSSI and discussed their recovery. Papers not written in English or had a quantitative design were excluded. Four databases (PsycInfo, CINAHL, Medline and Web of Science) were systematically searched. The quality of each paper was assessed using the CASP quality assessment tool. Data were synthesised using a meta‐ethnographic approach. Results: Thirteen studies comprising 159 participants were included. Three overarching themes were developed. While ceasing NSSI was an important aspect of recovery for some, recovery was typically viewed more holistically, encompassing developments within the self and relationships. Recovery was regarded an ongoing non‐linear journey. The personal and multifaceted nature of the recovery process emerged through a line of argument synthesis. Conclusions: This was the first qualitative synthesis of personal conceptualisations of NSSI recovery. The findings highlighted the personal and multifaceted nature of NSSI recovery and supported person‐centred models of self‐injury recovery. Clinical implications include the importance of expanding self‐injury recovery beyond cessation within research and clinical practice, and for collaborative and person‐centred approaches to be embraced when supporting those who self‐injure. The COVID-19 pandemic may have exacerbated depression, anxiety, and executive function (EF) difficulties in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). EF skills have been positively associated with mental health outcomes. Here, we probed the psychosocial impacts of pandemic responses in children with and without ASD by relating pre-pandemic EF assessments with anxiety and depression symptoms several months into the pandemic. We found that pre-pandemic inhibition and shifting difficulties, measured by the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function, predicted higher risk of anxiety symptoms. Aim: This study aimed to examine effective communication factors for personal agency in recovery by investigating the association between perceived support provided through communication and personal agency of individuals with mental illness. Method: A cross‐sectional study was conducted among community‐dwelling Japanese mental health service users, assessing subjective agency, decisional conflict, staff support for personal recovery, activation for mental health self‐management, demographic variables and living difficulties. Multiple linear regression analysis identified factors predicting subjective agency, revealing characteristics of effective provider communication for recovery. Results: Data from 222 users were analysed, revealing negative correlations between uncertainty about treatment choices and ineffective decision‐making with higher subjective agency, while staff support for personal recovery positively correlated with higher subjective agency. Discussion: In recovery‐oriented practice, prioritizing users' emotional experiences during decision‐making and supporting their self‐determination in their unique recovery journeys is crucial. Objective: To estimate the effect of the total cerebral small vessel disease score in the functional outcome and recurrence of cerebral infarction in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: A comparative study was used to review the initial cerebral infarction cases of patients with type 2 diabetes undergoing cranial MRI during 2016–2019, follow up their recovery for 3 months, and count the events of cerebral infarction recurrence within 24 months. MRI with lacunes, enlarged perivascular space (EPVS), cerebral microbleeds (CMBs), and white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) were defined as cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). Chi-square tests, t-tests, rank-sum tests, and Logistic regression were used for the statistical analysis. Results: A total of 208 patients were included in the analyses. Mean age was 65.2 ± 11.8 years, and 62% were men. The distribution of the total SVD score from 0 to 4 was 26.9%, 23.6%, 26.4%, 16.3%, and 6.7%. Multivariate Logistic regression showed that the cumulative CSVD score was independently associated with poor outcome 3 months after cerebral infarction (OR:2.193, 95% CI:1.673–2.875) and recurrence within 2 years (OR:2.715, 95% CI: 1.363–2.979). Lacunes, CMBs, WMHs but not EPVS were associated with the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores at 3 months after cerebral infarction, Lacunes was associated with recurrence within 2 years. However, the impact of each CSVD marker on functional outcome and stroke recurrence was smaller than that of the total CSVD score. Hamstring injuries are a frequent occurrence of athletes, leading to a stop in practice and long-term alterations in sports performance. About 12% of these lesions involve avulsion at the level of the proximal insertion that can be complete (about 6%) or partial. Starting from an epidemiological and treatment evaluation of these lesions in literature, the aim of this study was to examine the functional outcomes and the rate of "return to play" in a population composed of athletes of various levels who have undergone surgery to reinsert the hamstring muscles at the ischial insertion, for a complete detachment of one or more tendon heads. Therefore, a retrospective study was carried out where 18 patients treated at the Orthopedics and Traumatology Unit of the I.R.C.C.S. San Matteo in Pavia (Italy) were identified in a time span ranging from March 2012 to August 2020. The sample was analysed taking into account age, sex and risk factors, as well as the pathophysiology and anatomy of the injury using the Wood classification, the time elapsed before surgery, the duration of the rehabilitation protocol and the possible return to sports activity, comparing the level of sports performance in the pre- and post-operative period using the Tegner Activity Score (TAS). Different post-operative outcome evaluation scores (Perth Hamstring Assessment Tool PHAT and Lower Extremity Functional Scale LEFS) were also compared with each other in order to find a correlation with the real level of return to sporting activity. The mean age at surgery was 26.4 11.6 years. The population is composed of 14 males (77.8%) and 4 females (22.2%). All 18 patients returned to sports following surgery (100%). Of these patients, 17 (94%) maintained a level of sports performance equal to that before the injury. 100% of patients rated the outcome of the surgery as satisfactory. Background: Critical care pharmacists complete comprehensive medication reviews in Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) patients at Intensive Care Unit Recovery Centers (ICU-RCs) to optimize medication therapies after hospital discharge. Inpatient pharmacists often complete medication reconciliations prior to hospital discharge, which could affect interventions at an ICU-RC. However, this association remains ill-described. Objective: The purpose of this study was to, in patients with PICS, describe the effect of an inpatient, pharmacist-led medication reconciliation on the number of clinical pharmacist interventions at the first ICU-RC visit. Methods: This was a post-hoc subgroup analysis of an international, multicenter cohort study of adults who had a pharmacist-led comprehensive medication reconciliation conducted in 12 ICU-RCs. Only patients' first ICU-RC visit was eligible for inclusion. The primary outcome was the number of medication interventions made at initial ICU-RC visit in PICS patients who had an inpatient, pharmacist-led medication reconciliation compared to those who did not. Results: Of 323 patients included, 83 received inpatient medication reconciliations and 240 did not. No difference was observed in the median number of medication interventions between groups (2 vs 2, p =.06). However, a higher incidence of any intervention (86.3% vs 78.3%, p =.09) and dose adjustment (20.4% vs 9.6%; p =.03) was observed in the no medication reconciliation group. Only ICU Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score was associated with an increased odds of medication intervention at ICU-RC visit (aOR 1.15, 95% CI 1.05-1.25, p <.01). Conclusion and Relevance: No difference in the total number of medication interventions made by ICU-RC clinical pharmacists was observed in patients who received an inpatient, pharmacist-led medication reconciliation before hospital discharge compared to those who did not. Still, clinical observations within this study highlight the continued importance and study of clinical pharmacist involvement during transitions of care, including ICU-RC visits. Cognitive behavioral therapy, prolonged exposure, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing are effective treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They emphasize the processing of trauma-related memories and exposure as central components in treatment. In contrast, the metacognitive model emphasizes that PTSD is caused by a persistent negative thinking style, and the goal is to find alternative coping strategies and modify metacognitive beliefs without the use of exposure. In a quasi-experimental A-B design, patients diagnosed with PTSD received either MCT (n = 32) or TAU "treatment as usual" (n = 28) consisting of exposure-based treatments and were tested on different measures of symptoms. The results indicated that both treatments were effective and performed well on both trauma and anxiety symptoms. Recovery rates and clinical improvement were higher in the MCT condition at post-treatment. The study indicates that MCT could potentially be a viable alternative to trauma-focused treatment of PTSD. Clinical trial registration: The study is a clinical and quality audit of an ordinary routinely delivered clinical service in a specialized trauma clinic involving treatments for patients with PTSD. Extubation is a crucial step in the weaning process of critically ill mechanically ventilated patients. Some patients may develop postextubation respiratory failure that may lead to the need for re-intubation, which is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. This review comprehensively explores postextubation respiratory support strategies, focusing on the efficacy of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygen therapy and noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in reducing re-intubation rates among various patient populations. HFNC improves oxygenation and reduces the work of breathing. However, its effectiveness in preventing re-intubation varies according to the patient's characteristics and the predefined risk for re-intubation. NIV, alternatively, appears to provide substantial advantages in reducing the rates of re-intubation and respiratory failure, especially in patients with obesity and patients with hypercapnia. Therefore, the indiscriminate application of these support strategies without consideration of individual patient characteristics may not improve outcomes, highlighting the need for careful patient selection and tailored therapeutic strategies based on specific risk factors and clinical conditions. By aligning postextubation respiratory support strategies with patient-specific needs, we may improve the success rates of extubation, enhance overall recovery, and reduce the burden of reintubations in the intensive care setting. BACKGROUND: COVID-19 is associated with prolonged disability, particularly after critical illness. This study aimed to assess and compare disability post--hospital discharge of subjects who were invasively ventilated versus those who were not, following ICU admission due to COVID-19. This study also explored variables associated with long-term disability. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, subjects with COVID-19 who received invasive ventilation, noninvasive ventilation, or high-flow nasal cannula during ICU stay were assessed with the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS) 2.0 at 3 and 6 months post--hospital discharge. Data were analyzed collectively and stratified as subjects with and without invasive mechanical ventilation. Analysis of variance and multiple regression analyses were applied. RESULTS: The subjects (N = 43) were mainly male, middle age, and overweight. Subjects who were invasively ventilated (n = 21) had decreased physical function compared to those who were not during hospital assessments. From 3-6 months after discharge, all WHODAS domains and the overall score decreased in both groups (P < .001), indicating disability recovery. The participation domain, which assesses joining in society, was the only domain that remained worse in the ventilation group compared to the no ventilation group (P = .01). No interaction was found between time and the study groups, suggesting that the recovery trajectory was similar. At 6 months, considering the entire cohort, 70% and 56% had no disability in self-care and getting along domains, respectively, while 42% exhibited moderate to severe disability in the participation domain. According to the overall WHODAS score, 86% of subjects still had some level of disability at 6 months. In multivariate analyses, the overall WHODAS score along with the household and participation domains showed significant positive correlations, indicating higher disability, with corticosteroid use. CONCLUSIONS: Disability persisted at 6 month post--hospital discharge for ICU survivors of COVID-19, regardless of the need for invasive mechanical ventilation. Aim: The aim of this study was to make the Turkish cultural adaptation of the the Stroke Activity Scale (SAS). Method: This study was designed as a methodological research. The psychometric properties of the SAS scale were evaluated by validity and reliability analyses. Results: The average age of 84 stroke patients (mean ± SD) was 59.52 ± 14.03 years. Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (0.816) and Bartlett's Test of Sphericity (χ2 = 288.968, df = 10, p < 0.001) showed that the data set can be factored. A one-factor structure was obtained with Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The factor loads of the items obtained with PCA and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were found to be statistically significant. The obtained chi-square statistics (χ2 = 2.227, p = 0.694), normalized chi-square/freedom (χ2/sd) value (0 ≤ 0.557 ≤ 2) and other goodness of fit indices showed good compliance. The positive highly significant correlation (r = 0.846, p < 0.001) between the SAS and Rivermead Mobility Index (RMI) scales confirmed the Concurrent validity. Cronbach's alpha (0.864) value showed high reliability and Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) value (0.983, p < 0.001) showed excellent agreement. Conclusions: In this study, which was conducted for the Turkish adaptation of the SAS scale, the 5-item and 1-factor structure was evaluated as a valid and reliable scale for evaluating the balance abilities of stroke patients living in Turkey. Despite decades of data on "postoperative cognitive decline" (POCD), a research diagnosis based on objective cognitive test performance, perspectives on subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) after modern surgery/anesthesia have not been systematically collected or studied despite their recent inclusion in the 2018 redefinition of "postoperative neurocognitive disorder." The authors describe the alignment between SCC anecdotes and the research diagnosis of POCD, contextualizing these findings using recent literature within and outside anesthesiology.
