3. Deformations of the circular Wilson loop and spectral (in)dependence

Abstract

In this paper we study the expectation value of deformations of the circular Wilson loop in ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. The leading order deformation, known as the Bremsstrahlung function, can be obtained exactly from supersymmetric localization, so our focus is on deformations at higher orders. We find simple expressions for the expectation values for generic deformations at the quartic order at one-loop at weak coupling and at leading order at strong coupling. We also present a very simple algorithm (not requiring integration) to evaluate the two-loop result. We find that an exact symmetry of the strong coupling sigma-model, known as the spectral-parameter independence, is an approximate symmetry at weak coupling, modifying the expectation value starting only at the sextic order in the deformation. Furthermore, we find very simple patterns for how the spectral parameter can appear in the weak coupling calculation, suggesting all-order structures., Comment: 25 pages. v2: minor correction and added (with sincere appologies) missing acknowlegments

8. The Wilson loop CFT: Insertion dimensions and structure constants from wavy lines

Abstract

We study operator insertions into the $1/2$ BPS Wilson loop in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory and determine their two-point coefficients, anomalous dimensions and structure constants. The calculation is done for the first few lowest dimension insertions and relies on known results for the expectation value of a smooth Wilson loop. In addition to the particular coefficients that we calculate, our study elucidates the connection between deformations of the line and operator insertions and between the vacuum expectation value of the line and the CFT data of the insertions., Comment: 23 pages. v2: minor corrections

13. A profusion of $1/2$ BPS Wilson loops in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Chern-Simons-matter theories

Abstract

We initiate the study of $1/2$ BPS Wilson loops in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Chern-Simons-matter theories in three dimensions. We consider a circular or linear quiver with Chern-Simons levels $k$, $-k$ and $0$, and focus on loops preserving one of the two $SU(2)$ subgroups of the $R$-symmetry. In the cases with no vanishing Chern-Simons levels, we find a pair of Wilson loops for each pair of adjacent nodes on the quiver connected by a hypermultiplet (nodes connected by twisted hypermultiplets have Wilson loops preserving another set of supercharges). We expect this classical pairwise degeneracy to be lifted by quantum corrections. In the case with nodes with vanishing Chern-Simons terms connected by twisted hypermultiplets, we find that the usual $1/4$ BPS Wilson loops are automatically enlarged to $1/2$ BPS, as happens also in 3-dimensional Yang-Mills theory. When the nodes with vanishing Chern-Simons levels are connected by untwisted hypermultiplets, we do not find any Wilson loops coupling to those nodes which are classically invariant. Rather, we find several loops whose supersymmetry variation, while non zero, vanishes in any correlation function, so is weakly zero. We expect only one linear combination of those Wilson loops to remain BPS when quantum corrections are included. We analyze the M-theory duals of those Wilson loops and comment on their degeneracy. We also show that these Wilson loops are cohomologically equivalent to certain $1/4$ BPS Wilson loops whose expectation value can be evaluated by the appropriate localized matrix model., Comment: 40 pages

We derive the Lax operator for a very large family of classical minimal surface solutions in $AdS_3$ describing Wilson loops in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory. These solutions, constructed by Ishizeki, Kruczenski and Ziama, are associated with a hyperellictic surface of odd genus. Abstract

This paper proposes a genetic algorithm for the design of passive components operating at THz frequencies and its experimental validation using an exemplar patch antenna. The patch antenna is based on an SU8 substrate, with a binary array describing the placement of metal "bits" replacing the conventional patch. These "bits" are constrained at 25 × 25 μm2, ensuring ease of fabrication. Optimal configurations of this array are determined using a finite-difference time-domain solver coupled to the genetic algorithm, which simulates and optimizes for maximum power collection in the frequency range of 0.10–5.0 THz. The aim was to produce an evolved patch antenna design with double the power collection efficiency across the majority of the frequency range compared to a reference, plain patch antenna of the same size. This was successful with a 5.3 dB mean improvement in simulated power collection compared to a plain reference patch. A vector network analyzer in conjunction with 0.80–1.0 THz frequency extenders was used to validate the simulation results. The antennas were arranged in pairs with variable feed length to determine the feedline attenuation and validate the simulated antenna directionality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

16. The Effects on Monopsony on Strategy and Leadership in Ontario Colleges. Professional File. Number 28

Abstract

The period 1995 to 2005 was one of significant turbulence for Ontario colleges, marked by increasing globalization, immigration, disruptions in the labour market, new technologies and dramatic reductions in government operating grants. This study examines how colleges and their leaders responded to those strategic challenges in their official strategy texts. It finds that (1) the strategies of colleges were more alike than different; (2) the strategic content of the texts was relatively weak; and (3) attention to the organizational field was limited. The research applies key concepts from organizational to the analysis of eight strategy texts, and triangulates the findings with 23 in-depth interviews and a survey of 338 college staff. The study finds that Ontario colleges are subject to the monopsonistic power (a single buyer) of the government, to the point that monopsony trumps strategy. It also identifies three corollary effects: (1) monopsony trumps differentiation; (2) the quest for legitimacy trumps strategy; and (3) the local imperative trumps strategy. It concludes with several propositions that can inform the practice of strategic planning in colleges in the future. A bibliography is included. (Contains 3 tables and 8 footnotes.)

Abstract

We demonstrate movement of a head-to-head domain wall through a magnetic nanowire simply by passing an electrical current through the domain wall and without any external magnetic field applied. The effect depends on the sense and magnitude of the electrical current and allows direct propagation of domain walls through complex nanowire shapes, contrary to the case of magnetic field induced propagation. The efficiency of this mechanism has been evaluated and the effective force acting on the wall has been found equal to 0.88x10-9 N.A-1.

Abstract

Stem cell research has raised great interest in the scientific community as it has the potential to form multiple cell types and it is believed they hold the key to curing many diseases. However, there is a need for better understanding of how to control these cells and further research investigating methods for controlling and directing these cells is required. Pluripotent stem cells transplanted into immune-deficient mice 'spontaneously’ differentiate and proliferate to form a complex mass of differentiated and undifferentiated cells, teratomas - teratoma assay. Such tumours are generally haphazard in their organisation however; they do contain some structures similar to those observed in the embryo. Teratoma formation is a useful model to explore the developmental potential of stem cells and study aspects of tissue development. Examination of how the anatomical location into which human pluripotent stem cells are grafted influences their growth in situ allows investigation of how these cells are affected by different areas within the body: cells grafted into the liver rapidly produce large tumours containing predominantly immature cells whereas, subcutaneous implants were significantly slower growing and formed tumours composed of differentiated tissues. These different growth patterns indicate how environmental cues within the niche affect stem cell behaviour. One factor which contributes to the maintenance of a niche is the extracellular matrix (ECM). To investigate how endogenous ECM affects teratoma behaviour, co-transplantation is carried out with stem cells and ECM components. The ECM extract Matrigel™ dramatically increased the success rate of teratoma formation and size with no detectable affect on teratoma composition when compared to controls and removal of the growth factors from the co-transplanted ECM extract had no effect on teratoma success rate, growth rate, or composition. To study the effects of the ECM in vitro, components of the ECM are often used topcoat glass or plastic surfaces to enhance cell attachment in vitro. Fragments of ECM molecules can be immobilised on surfaces in order to mimic the effects seen by whole molecules. In this study a novel technology developed by Oria Protein Technologies for the immobilisation of peptide sequences from ECM proteins is evaluated. By examining: the adherence of cultured PC 12; neurite outgrowth from PC 12 cells; and neuronal differentiation of neural stem/progenitor cells (NSPCs) it is shown that peptides from collagen I, collagen IV, fibronectin and laminin can mimic surfaces coated with ECM proteins. Collectively, this data demonstrates that peptides from ECM proteins can be immobilised in functional fashion to control cell behaviour. Surfaces with adsorbed proteins and biomimetic surfaces presenting peptide motifs from ECM proteins are used to investigate and explain observations from in vivo teratoma experiments. In vivo, Matrigel™ increases the gene expression of the pluripotent stem cell marker Oct4, increasing the pluripotent cell percentage and thus increases the likelihood of teratoma formation. In vitro, Matrigel™ also increases the gene expression of the proliferative marker Ki67, indicating that large teratomas from by the co-transplantation of stem cells with Matrigel™ could be due to increased cell proliferation.

Abstract

As life expectancy continues to increase in most EU Member States, smart technologies can help enable older people to continue living at home, despite the challenges accompanying the ageing process. The Innovation Action (IA) SHAPES ‘Smart and Healthy Ageing through People Engaging in Supportive Systems’ funded by the EU under the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme (grant agreement number 857159) attends to these topics to support active and healthy ageing and the wellbeing of older adults. This protocol article outlines the SHAPES project’s objectives and aims, methods, structure, and expected outcomes. SHAPES seeks to build, pilot, and deploy a large-scale, EU-standardised interoperable, and scalable open platform. The platform will facilitate the integration of a broad range of technological, organisational, clinical, educational, and social solutions. SHAPES emphasises that the home is much more than a house-space; it entails a sense of belonging, a place and a purpose in the community. SHAPES creates an ecosystem - a network of relevant users and stakeholders - who will work together to scale-up smart solutions. Furthermore, SHAPES will create a marketplace seeking to connect demand and supply across the home, health and care services. Finally, SHAPES will produce a set of recommendations to support key stakeholders seeking to integrate smart technologies in their care systems to mediate care delivery. Throughout, SHAPES adopts a multidisciplinary research approach to establish an empirical basis to guide the development of the platform. This includes long-term ethnographic research and a large-scale pan-European campaign to pilot the platform and its digital solutions within the context of seven distinct pilot themes. The project will thereby address the challenges of ageing societies in Europe and facilitate the integration of community-based health and social care. SHAPES will thus be a key driver for the transformation of healthcare and social care services across Europe.

Access to digital health and care solutions and services that promote healthy ageing, independent living, and ageing in place is limited due to significant market barriers and challenges. The SHAPES project addresses the challenge of ageing populations by developing a sociotechnical ecosystem comprising a variety of health and care digital solutions, tools and services to enable and facilitate active, independent, and healthy ageing at home. Within the SHAPES project, the SHAPES Marketplace serves as a one-stop-shop for digital solutions and services designed for the Silver Economy that target the smart and healthy ageing and independent living markets. Delivering a dynamic catalogue of health and care digital solutions and services, the Marketplace promotes a transparent expansion of a trusted market offer on digital solutions and services for healthy ageing and independent living on a pan-European scale, thereby preventing vendor lock-in and enhancing the agile and fair competitiveness of the health and care industry, particularly in Europe. This paper introduces the SHAPES Marketplace and considers its function as a market driver to raise awareness on the benefits and impact of health and care digital solutions and services, as well as to shape the healthy ageing market, upholding the Systems-Market for Assistive and Related Technologies (SMART) Thinking Matrix to stimulate transparency, trust and fair competition. Abstract

Increasingly, health and social care providers are adopting technologymediated processes to optimise the delivery of care and to influence policy- and decision-makers. However, fragmentation persists in and between health and social care, impeding the provision of rounded person-centred care. Health and care delivery for an ageing population involves many diverse stakeholders with a range of motivations and agendas. The creation of a functional and sustainable network may promote the achievement of a well-functioning and integrated health and care sector. 50. Barriers to and Facilitators of Participation in Health and Social Care Governance: Categories and Cross-Cutting Themes from a Survey of SHAPES Project Partners.

Abstract

Good governance--aligned with human rights and rights-based care, participation, inclusion, and person-centredness--of digital care systems is integral to their ability to meet their objectives. To gain insight into existing governance structures and processes and participation experiences across Europe and lay foundations for the SHAPES Project's network governance (a healthy and active ageing Innovation Action consortium), our objectives included: 1) expand the list of known stakeholders, 2) explore how the range of stakeholders participate in health and social care governance, 3) develop an inventory of barriers and facilitators. Using an empirical, survey method, we consulted SHAPES Project partner organisations, with respondents invited to suggest specific participation barriers and facilitators. 16 organisations responded. Numerous additional stakeholders were identified. Circa 150 unique barriers and facilitators were reported, rationalised into 20 superordinate categories. Six cross-cutting themes were assembled: dimensionality and flux; power; opportunity and environments; interest, motivation, and choice; valuing governance participation, and duality. This work allows consideration of a wide range of stakeholders for the SHAPES collaborative governance model and future research, and for system design with the benefit of a detailed inventory of barriers and facilitators, and thematic contextualisation.
