Restraining bends influence topography, strike‐slip evolution, and earthquake rupture dynamics, however the specific factors governing their geometry and development in the crust are not well established. These relationships are challenging to investigate in field examples due to cannibalization and erosion of earlier structures with cumulative strain. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the structure, morphology, and kinematics of 22 basement‐cored restraining bends on low net‐slip faults (<10 km) within the southern Eastern California shear zone (SECSZ) via mapping, topographic analyses, and 3D numerical modeling. The bends are self‐similar in form with most exhibiting focused relief between high‐angle bounding faults with an arrowhead shape in map view and a "whaleback" longitudinal profile. Slight changes in that form occur with increasing size indicating predictable growth that appears to be primarily controlled by local fault geometries (i.e., bifurcation angle), rather than the influence of fault obliquity relative to far‐field plate motion, due to inefficient slip‐transfer across interconnected irregularly trending closely spaced faults. Modeling results indicate that the self‐similar fault‐bound geometry of SECSZ restraining bends may arise from elevated shear strain at the outer corners of single transpressional fault bends with increasing cumulative slip. This, in turn, promotes growth of a new fault leading to efficient accommodation of local convergent strain via uplift between bounding faults. Finally, our results indicate that the kilometer‐scale restraining bends contribute minimally to regional contraction as they only penetrate the upper third of the seismogenic crust and are therefore also unlikely to impede large earthquake surface ruptures. Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) persons are underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). One of the major barriers to STEM careers is DHH students' extremely low college graduation rates. While social and literacy barriers play a critical role in this phenomenon, student autonomy has also been cited as a major contributor. DHH students have been characterized as dependent learners, a learning style possibly reinforced by reliance on adults for disproportionate amounts of information, as well as a tendency of deaf educators to teach in highly structured, explicit manners. Dependent learning styles can impede autonomy at the college level and also run counter to current conceptualizations of scientific inquiry. For DHH students to succeed in science, they must develop habits of mind consistent with those of practicing scientists and demonstrate high levels of inquiry. This study utilized frameworks of learning style and science inquiry to identify the salient features of autonomy and inquiry in deaf science classrooms with the goal of isolating pedagogical strategies to foster these skills. Applying a general inductive approach, this instrumental cross-case study looks at three earth science classrooms located in three high schools for deaf students. Videos of instructional periods were taken and analyzed for each classroom. Findings suggest that teacher facilitation of inquiry plays a major role in DHH students' apparent learning style and ability to negotiate scientific problem-solving. A model describing teacher facilitation of autonomy and inquiry is developed and recommendations for fostering inquiry and autonomy are identified.

For scientists, the sandbox serves as an analog for faulting in Earth's crust. Here, the large, slow processes within the crust can be scaled to the size of a table, and time scales are directly observable. This makes it a useful tool for demonstrating the role of inquiry in science. For this reason, the sandbox is also helpful for learning science through inquiry in middle and high school classrooms. This article describes a classroom version of the sandbox and how the authors use it as a physical model to promote inquiry in Earth science classes. Three-dimensional numerical models are needed to investigate the role of nonvertical strike-slip fault segments on the deformation within restraining bends. Numerical models simulate geologic deformation of two alternative three-dimensional present-day configurations for the San Andreas fault through the restraining bend within the San Gorgonio Pass region (SGPR) in Southern California. Both models produce decreasing strike-slip rates southward along the San Bernardino strand of the San Andreas fault, similar to geologic data. The north-dipping San Andreas fault model better matches the available strike-slip data as well as the geologic uplift data for the southern San Bernardino Mountains than the vertical San Andreas fault model. We conclude that a north-dipping fault configuration is preferred for models of the San Andreas fault in the SGPR. The complexity of the active fault geometry at the SGPR promotes the transfer of strike slip from the San Andreas fault to the nearby but unconnected San Jacinto fault. Slip rates and uplift patterns are sensitive to fault geometry within strike-slip restraining bends.

Topography along strike‐slip fault restraining bends is theoretically self‐limited by erosion, block translation and the expected abandonment of fault bends. However, Denali (6,194 m) and Foraker (5,304 m) are located within a restraining bend of the dextral Denali Fault system. We reveal the role of bend evolution in mountain building with physical experiments scaled to simulate the Alaska Mount McKinley restraining bend (MMRB). Despite the natural complexity of the MMRB, first‐order patterns (of strike‐slip separation rates, uplift and lateral bend migration) from the geologic data align with patterns from scaled experiments. Thermochronology, seismicity, and slip rate data show that the persistence of a single Denali Fault strand through the ~6 Ma MMRB is facilitated by simultaneous advection of crust through the bend and migration of the eastern vertex of the bend. Previous studies of jointing in sedimentary rocks have shown that joint-network architecture is controlled by mechanical stratigraphy, which is described by (1) the thickness and rigidity of stratigraphic units and (2) the nature of interlaces between beds. Using joint pattern to infer rigidity contrast between beds is complicated by the possibility that material properties of the beds may change between fracturing events. Observation of both an early bed-contained joint set and a differently oriented late throughgoing joint set in the same beds of growth strata in the Oliana anticline in the Spanish Pyrenees may reflect changing mechanical properties (i.e., via diagenesis) during the folding process. Using a Schmidt hammer, we assess the rigidity contrast between the individual units and show that the present-day contrast is not great enough to terminate joints at interfaces. This result is consistent with an interpretation that the late-stage throughgoing joints formed in strata with conditions similar to those of the present day and that the early bed-contained joints formed when the rigidity contrast between beds was significantly greater than that of the present day. For example, differential diagenesis rates between layers of differing grain size would produce temporally changing mechanical stratigraphy. We propose that changes in mechanical stratigraphy may have previously been unrecognized in other stratigraphic sections and that these changes affect joint-network architecture and subsequent fluid-flow pathways.
