Abstract Endosomal nucleic acid sensing by Toll-like receptors (TLRs) is central to antimicrobial immunity and several autoimmune conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The innate immune adaptor TASL mediates, via the interaction with SLC15A4, the activation of IRF5 downstream of human TLR7, TLR8 and TLR9, but the pathophysiological functions of this axis remain unexplored. Here we show that SLC15A4 deficiency results in a selective block of TLR7/9-induced IRF5 activation, while loss of TASL leads to a strong but incomplete impairment, which depends on the cell type and TLR engaged. This residual IRF5 activity is ascribed to a previously uncharacterized paralogue, Gm6377, named here TASL2. Double knockout of TASL and TASL2 (TASLDKO) phenocopies SLC15A4-deficient feeble mice showing comparable impairment of innate and humoral responses. Consequently, TASLDKO mice fail to control chronic LCMV infection, while being protected in a pristane-induced SLE disease model. Our study thus demonstrates the critical pathophysiological role of SLC15A4 and TASL/TASL2 for TLR7/9-driven inflammatory responses, further supporting the therapeutic potential of targeting this complex in SLE and related diseases.

The corrosion rates of carbon steel and galvanized steel according to the ISO 9223 standard, the effect of pollutant contamination and atmospheric aggressiveness under high rainfall conditions in the Chocó department were studied. Carbon and galvanized steel samples, chloride, and sulfur collectors were exposed in three atmospheric stations in three strategic positions covering the Colombian Pacific: Quibdó, Andagoya and Bahía Solano, for different exposure periods (up to 18 months). The structural-micro characterization of corrosion products was evaluated via X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy SEM-EDS. The results indicate that all study regions obtained the highest time of wetness category (τ5). The sulfur-containing pollution (SO2) was categorized as P0 (rural atmosphere) with average values of Pd ≤ 4 mg/m2 - day. Bahia Solano station showed the highest chloride deposition rate, reporting an average of 8.3 mg/m2-day (categorized as δ1), according to ISO 9223. Due to the extremely high rainfall in the department of Chocó, the results initially suggested hematite formation on carbon steel. After several months, there was a phase transition to lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH). The formation of γ-FeOOH induces active corrosion on the iron substrate. The zincite phase (ZnO) was observed in the galvanized steel corrosion products. The corrosion rates of carbon and galvanized steel in the location of Quibdó-Colombia were higher than in previous reports. Data analysis reveals that the precipitation variable, which governs the TOW and pollution contaminants, significantly influences the corrosion of these exposed metals.

Societal Impact Statement Palms provide vital plant resources and ecosystem services to people across the tropics. To improve conservation guidance, a “health check” of palms in two highly threatened biodiversity hotspots in Colombia and Ecuador was undertaken. Palms are very diverse in these regions, but over one third are threatened with extinction now, especially among endemic species. Widespread and useful palms are also under intense human pressure and need to be prioritized in terms of sustainable management practices. Given the importance of palms for humans, inclusive conservation actions should be continued in both countries in order to safeguard this resource. Summary Palms provide central plant resources to societies in the tropics, especially in the Global South. The western Pacific and Andean regions of Colombia and Ecuador host two hotspots of biodiversity. To prioritize conservation policies towards palms, we undertook a conservation assessment of species in the region. We compiled a taxonomically verified database of specimens collected in both hotspots. We inferred preliminary conservation assessments using International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Criteria B. In addition, we evaluated the level of exposure of palms to human use and population density using the anthrome concept. We documented 144 native palm species in 33 genera occurring in both hotspots of Colombia and Ecuador. Of these, 55 are endemic to this region. We recorded 133 species for Colombia, 43 endemic, and 71 species for Ecuador, 9 endemic. A third of all palm species in the region are potentially threatened with extinction (50/144) and 12 as preliminary Critically Endangered. Aiphanes and Geonoma have the highest number of threatened species. In total, 60% of palm specimens were collected in the “low human impact” anthrome type. In contrast, 41% of specimens occur in high human density areas. The two hotspots of biodiversity in Colombia and Ecuador are very diverse in palms. However, we show that this diversity is under threat and is predominantly found in areas impacted by human activities. Extinction risk is highest in endemic species in both countries. Widespread and useful palm species also face threats linked to overexploitation or habitat loss. Inclusive conservation measures should be designed to conserve, together with communities, this plant resource.

Introducción y objetivos: confirmar la erradicación de Helicobacter pylori es esencial debido al aumento de la resistencia antimicrobiana a diferentes esquemas de tratamiento. El objetivo principal del estudio es determinar el porcentaje de erradicación de H. pylori por medio de la prueba de aliento con carbono 14 (14C). Materiales y métodos: se realizó un estudio transversal con componente analítico, con recolección retrospectiva de la información mediante la revisión de historias clínicas de pacientes que recibieron tratamiento erradicador para H. pylori y tuvieron una posterior confirmación de la erradicación mediante la prueba de aliento con 14C en el Hospital Universitario Fundación Valle del Lili entre enero de 2019 y junio de 2022. Resultados: un total de 360 pacientes cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión. El 66,9% de pacientes fueron mujeres, con una mediana de edad de 51 años (rango intercuartílico [RIC]: 39-61), el porcentaje de la prueba de aliento con 14C negativo fue de 84,4% y la mediana de tiempo entre la finalización del tratamiento y la realización de la prueba fue de 8 semanas (RIC: 5-12). Casi todos los pacientes recibieron 14 días de tratamiento. Conclusiones: en nuestro medio se presenta un porcentaje de erradicación aceptable, inclusive con la terapia triple estándar (la cual sigue siendo la más utilizada). Se requieren estudios de susceptibilidad antimicrobiana para lograr tratamientos basados en la epidemiología local.

El error médico puede surgir en cualquier etapa de la atención sanitaria, afectando a profesionales de todas las especialidades y teniendo graves repercusiones en pacientes y sus familias. En el ámbito de la medicina genética, los errores diagnósticos son especialmente críticos, destacando la necesidad de precisión y la importancia de un enfoque multimodal. La Medicina Personalizada de Precisión (MPP), basada en los seis pilares de precisión, predicción, personalización, prevención, participación y población, es esencial para mejorar la exactitud diagnóstica. Aunque la integración de datos genómicos ha revolucionado el diagnóstico, es crucial considerar la evidencia en su contexto, teniendo en cuenta los valores del paciente y los recursos disponibles. Además, el fenotipo reverso emerge como una estrategia innovadora para identificar variantes genéticas patogénicas al correlacionar con características clínicas específicas. A través de un caso clínico de una mujer diagnosticada erróneamente con síndrome de Turner debido a un análisis paraclínico incorrecto, el artículo aborda la responsabilidad profesional y el dilema ético de los errores diagnósticos. Se ofrece un análisis integral desde las perspectivas médica y bioética, identificando causas, consecuencias y lecciones para la práctica clínica, y revisando brevemente el aborto recurrente y el síndrome de Turner para evitar diagnósticos erróneos.

La prison médiévale et moderne avait une fonction coercitive dans les procès au civil pour dettes. Cette pratique de détention est analysée en deux temps : dans le droit castillan depuis 1348 jusqu’au XIXe siècle, puis à partir des cautions d’amélioration des conditions de détention conservées dans les archives notariales concernant la prison royale de Séville pour les années 1579-1624. La prison pour dettes permet d’aborder la question sociale à travers le prisme des liens multiples du crédit, d’explorer la corrélation entre réclusion et dettes ainsi que son rapport aux phénomènes de paupérisation dans la société castillane d’Ancien Régime.

El fenómeno del ausentismo parental y su impacto en el rendimiento académico de los estudiantes de educación básica primaria en una institución educativa en el municipio de Santa Rosa, en el sur de Bolívar. Objetivo. Comprender las experiencias entorno al ausentismo parental frente al desempeño académico en niños y niñas de educación básica primaria de una institución educativa del municipio de Santa Rosa, del Sur de Bolívar. Materiales y métodos. El enfoque de la investigación es cualitativo y fenomenológico, se aplicó a 11 estudiantes una entrevista a profundidad para conocer las experiencias acerca del objeto de estudio. Resultados. Este estudio revela la compleja interacción de factores que contribuyen al ausentismo parental y su impacto en el rendimiento académico de los estudiantes en una institución educativa en Santa Rosa, Bolívar. Discusión. La falta de interés de los padres en la educación puede llevar a que los niños no valoren la educación y prefieran otras actividades. Esto puede resultar en desmotivación, malos comportamientos y falta de compromiso con la educación. Conclusión. Estos hallazgos subrayan la necesidad de abordar el ausentismo parental desde una perspectiva multidimensional, considerando las demandas laborales, los aspectos socioeconómicos y las dinámicas familiares.

Euonymus latifolius is a paradigmatic nemoral-subMediterranean species of the relict flora from Würmian glaciations in the Iberian Peninsula. Due to its transitional nature, taxa of this plant group could be used as a sensitive indicator to evaluate the effects of climate change on plants in the near future. In the Iberian Peninsula, E. latifolius is scattered in relict, isolated small populations, and catalogued as critically endangered. Previous studies of this taxon indicated the strong dependence of recruitment on canopy cover, which was attributed to the shade-meditated maintenance of soil humidity in the juvenile microhabitat. However, no information is available on the effects of light radiation on this nemoral species. In this study, we investigated the growth response of E. latifolius to photosynthetically active radiation by producing and transplanting saplings along a broad light intensity gradient, i.e., from direct illumination to dense shaded canopy, in a nemoral mixed deciduous forest stand in the Botanic Garden of Castilla-La Mancha. Our results confirmed the marked sciophilous nature of E. latifolius, which is particularly uncommon in the Mediterranean flora, by demonstrating a drastic reduction in growth with the increase of exposure to light intensity, which became critical at high values and even lethal when plants were directly exposed to light. The opening of the canopy in the natural habitat of this species due to simplification of the structure of nemoral communities promoted by climate change in southern latitudes of Europe comprises a real and short-term risk for E. latifolius, and probably for other relict nemoral-subMediterranean species. Conservation actions are recommended.

The need for biodegradable bone graft biomaterials in orthopedic surgeries is more often each day due to the promotion of natural tissue regeneration. One option is calcium phosphate cements (CPC), that are also osseconductors. However, their low mechanical properties restrict their application to low mechanical requirement areas of the body. The CPC mechanical resistance depends on the entanglement grade of the calcium deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA), one option to improve it is trough incorporation of nucleating agents (e.g., stoichiometrically hydroxyapatite). This work proposes the use of a biodegradable nucleating agent, as it is Type B carbonated Hydroxyapatite (CHA-B), to improve the CPC performance. It was formulated compositions of alpha tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) with variations on the amount of CHA-B (0–5–10–15 wt.%). The compression resistance was evaluated and results indicated that 5% CHA-B increases the strength (7.8%) and the elastic modulus (6.16%), while the other additions diminished such values. Besides, the effect on the setting time, the in vitro degradation and in the physicochemical properties was determined through scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. Resumen: La necesidad de biomateriales de relleno óseo biodegradables en cirugías ortopédicas es cada vez mayor, ya que promueven la regeneración natural del tejido. Una opción son los cementos de fosfato de calcio (CPC), que además son osteoconductores. Sin embargo, sus bajas propiedades mecánicas limitan su aplicación a zonas del cuerpo de baja exigencia mecánica. La resistencia mecánica de los CPC depende del grado de entrecruzamiento de los cristales formados de hidroxiapatita deficiente en calcio (CDHA), una opción de aumentarla es mediante la incorporación de agentes nucleantes (e.g. hidroxiapatita estequiométrica). Este trabajo propone el uso de un agente nucleante biodegradable, como lo es la Hidroxiapatita carbonatada tipo B (CHA-B), para mejorar el desempeño de los CPC. Se formularon composiciones de fosfato tricálcico alfa (α-TCP) con variaciones en la cantidad de CHA-B (0-5-10-15 wt.%). Se evaluó la resistencia a la compresión determinando que la adicción de 5% de CHA-B aumenta el esfuerzo (7,8%) y el módulo de elasticidad (6,16%), mientras que las demás adicciones disminuyeron dichos valores. Igualmente, se determinó el efecto en el tiempo de fraguado, en la degradación in vitro y en las propiedades fisicoquímicas mediante las técnicas de microscopía electrónica de barrido, difracción de rayos x y espectroscopía infrarroja.

El tungsteno (W) ha sido de gran importancia en la industria, debido a su estabilidad química y propiedades mecánicas, lo que ha permitido que sea usado en una amplia gama de aplicaciones. Sin embargo, en la literatura, la mayoría de los reportes de investigación se enfocan en su interacción con otros elementos, formando aleaciones en compuestos tales como el semicarburo de tungsteno W2C y carburo de tungsteno WC. El W, en forma de película y sin aleantes, no es reportado ampliamente en la literatura, por lo cual se hace pertinente este trabajo de investigación, enfocado en el estudio de la naturaleza estructural y morfológica de películas de W, depositadas sobre substratos de vidrio y silicio (100) por medio de evaporación termoresistiva a diferentes valores de corriente. La naturaleza estructural de las capas se estudió usando difracción de rayos-X (XRD), identificando las reflexiones características de la estructura cristalina del W en los planos (110), (200) y (211), encontrando que no hay influencia de la corriente aplicada sobre la estructura cristalina de las capas. Las características morfológicas de las capas fueron estudiadas usando microscopía de fuerza atómica (AFM), encontrando una relación directa entre la corriente aplicada y los valores de rugosidad y tamaño de grano, el espesor de las capas varió entre 210 y 260 nm. Mediante microscopía electrónica de barrido se logró verificar la alta densificación de las capas depositadas. Esta investigación logró demostrar la posibilidad de depositar capas delgadas usando la técnica de evaporación termoresistiva, en las cuales se conserva la naturaleza estructural del material del bloque. Este tipo de películas, según la literatura consultada, podrían ser usadas en la fabricación de interconexiones en microprocesadores (Lee et al., 2019).

La idea de este artículo surgió a partir del Coloquio sobre Estudios de Infancia en Colombia, realizado en octubre del año 2022. Durante este evento se evidenció una amplia diversidad de perspectivas y enfoques utilizados para abordar el tema de la infancia. En este contexto e inspirados en el trabajo previo de Tesar (2011), las y los organizadores del coloquio convocamos a varios investigadores e investigadoras para hacer parte de este experimento de escritura colectiva con la invitación a responder las siguientes preguntas: ¿Cómo se podría definir a los niños y niñas? y/o ¿Cómo se podría definir la infancia en el contexto colombiano? La invitación fue acogida por trece investigadoras e investigadores muy distintos que desde sus disciplinas, investigaciones, trayectorias personales y profesionales abordan —en alrededor de quinientas palabras— las nociones recién planteadas. El resultado es un escrito de autoría coral que intenta mostrar la variedad y la complejidad de lo que se entiende por niño, niña e infancia en Colombia.

Se revisaron las historias clínicas de todos los pacientes con trasplante hepático atendidos en el Centro Especializado San Vicente Fundación entre enero de 2013 y junio de 2017, para determinar la frecuencia de síndrome metabólico (SM) postrasplante. El sarcoma de Kaposi es una neoplasia angioproliferativa asociada al virus del herpes humano 8. Según las características clínicas y el grado de inmunosupresión, son cuatro las formas epidemiológicas: clásica, endémica, iatrogénica y epidémica, esta última asociada al síndrome de inmunodeficiencia adquirida (SIDA) y con un 40% de compromiso gastrointestinal. Existe escasa evidencia epidemiológica, clínica y endoscópica de la enfermedad. Este estudio buscó caracterizar esta condición en una población colombiana y contrastar los hallazgos con publicaciones de otros países. Se revisaron 135 registros de pacientes que consultaron entre el 2011 y 2020 por sarcoma de Kaposi, de los cuales 24 tenían compromiso gastrointestinal. Se obtuvieron características epidemiológicas, clínicas, endoscópicas y tratamientos. Veintidós pacientes eran hombres. Hubo 21 pacientes infectados por virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH; 87,5%) y 19 recibían terapia antirretroviral (90%). El 33,3% tenía carga viral VIH > 100 000 copias/mL. El recuento de CD4+ fue < 50 cel/μL en el 28,6% de los casos, entre 50 y 100 cel/μL en el 19,0%, y entre 100 y 200 cel/μL en el 14,4%. La tasa de infecciones por otros oportunistas fue de 41,7%. Hubo síntomas gastrointestinales en el 33% de los pacientes y los más frecuentes fueron hematoquecia, dolor abdominal, náuseas y diarrea. La mayoría tuvo lesiones cutáneas concomitantes (70,8%). Las lesiones gastrointestinales se localizaron principalmente en la orofaringe (41,7%), estómago (20,8%) y colon (16,7%). El hallazgo endoscópico más común fue eritema maculopapular. Este artículo mostró una visión de la epidemiología local del sarcoma de Kaposi gastrointestinal. En contraste con estudios en otras poblaciones, en este, los síntomas gastrointestinales fueron más frecuentes y hubo diferencia en los hallazgos endoscópicos. Son necesarios estudios con poblaciones más grandes.

Members of the genus Atropa contain various tropane alkaloids, including atropine ((±)-hyoscyamine) and scopolamine, which possess medicinal properties. Preserving the diverse genetic background of wild populations via optimal plant production from seeds could be essential for avoiding the loss of potential uses. We analyzed the germination ecology of two Atropa species comprising the threatened A. baetica and widespread A. belladonna to determine the: (1) influence of temperature, light, and seed age on germination patterns; (2) effects of cold stratification and gibberellic acid (GA3); (3) phenology of seedling emergence in outdoor conditions; (4) phenology of dormancy break and loss of viability in buried seeds; and (5) ability to form persistent soil seed banks. Freshly matured seeds exhibited conditional physiological dormancy, with germination at high temperatures (32/18 °C) but not at low and cold ones (5, 15/4, 20/7 °C). The germination ability increased with time of dry storage and with GA3, thereby suggesting nondeep physiological dormancy. Under outdoor conditions, no seedlings emerged during the first post-sown autumn, but emergence peaks occurred in late winter–early spring. Both species could form small persistent soil seed banks with short durations (3–5 years). A plant production protocol from seeds was established for both taxa.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the use of rectal mucosal cleansings before transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy with a transrectal approach, comparing the safety profile of chlorhexidine and povidone-iodine.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective analysis of our prospectively maintained database between August 2019 to September 2020 in a high-volume hospital in Cali, Colombia. 428 consecutive patients who underwent TRUS-PB with a transrectal approach were included in this study. 117 patients received povidone-iodine and 311 patients received chlorhexidine for rectal mucosa cleansings. After the procedure, we conducted telephone follow-ups at 48 hours, 7 days, and 30 days. The complications were registered in our database. Abstract Background Pneumonia is the leading cause of mortality in pediatric population. The etiology of pneumonia in this population is variable and changes according to age and disease severity and where the study is conducted. Our aim was to determine the etiology of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in children aged 1 month to 17 years admitted to 13 Colombian hospitals. Methods Prospective cohort study. Hospitalized children with radiologically confirmed CAP and ≤ 15 days of symptoms were included and followed together with a control group. Induced sputum (IS) was submitted for stains and cultures for pyogenic bacteria and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and multiplex PCR (mPCR) for bacteria and viruses; urinary antigens for pneumococcus and Legionella pneumophila; nasopharyngeal swabs for viruses, and paired serology for atypical bacteria and viruses. Additional cultures were taken at the discretion of primary care pediatricians. Results Among 525 children with CAP, 71.6% had non-severe pneumonia; 24.8% severe and 3.6% very severe pneumonia, and no fatal cases. At least one microorganism was identified in 84% of children and 61% were of mixed etiology; 72% had at least one respiratory virus, 28% pyogenic bacteria and 21% atypical bacteria. Respiratory syncytial virus, Parainfluenza, Rhinovirus, Influenza, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Adenovirus and Streptococcus pneumoniae were the most common etiologies of CAP. Respiratory syncytial virus was more frequent in children under 2 years and in severe pneumonia. Tuberculosis was diagnosed in 2.3% of children. IS was the most useful specimen to identify the etiology (33.6%), and blood cultures were positive in 3.6%. The concordance between all available diagnostic tests was low. A high percentage of healthy children were colonized by S. pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae, or were infected by Parainfluenza, Rhinovirus, Influenza and Adenovirus. Conclusions Respiratory viruses are the most frequent etiology of CAP in children and adolescents, in particular in those under 5 years. This study shows the challenges in making an etiologic diagnosis of CAP in pediatric population because of the poor concordance between tests and the high percentage of multiple microorganisms in healthy children. IS is useful for CAP diagnosis in pediatric population.

Abstract Obstetric brachial plexus palsy is a rather common injury in newborns, caused by traction to the brachial plexus during labor. In this context, with the present systematic review, we aimed to explore the use of nerve graft and nerve transfer as procedures to improve elbow flexion in children with obstetric palsy. For the present review, we followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, Wholis and SCOPUS databases. Predetermined criteria defined the following requirements for inclusion of a study: Clinical trials, quasi-experiments, and cohort studies that performed nerve graft and nerve transfer in children (≤ 3 years old) with diagnosis of obstetric palsy. The risk of bias in nonrandomized studies of interventions assessment tool was used for nonrandomized studies. Out of seven studies that used both procedures, three of them compared the procedures of nerve graft with nerve transfer, and the other four combined them as a reconstructive method for children with obstetric palsy. According to the Medical Research Council grading system, both methods improved equally elbow flexion in the children. Overall, our results showed that both techniques of nerve graft and nerve transfer are equally good options for nerve reconstruction in cases of obstetric palsy. More studies approaching nerve reconstruction techniques in obstetric palsy should be made, preferably randomized clinical trials, to validate the results of the present systematic review.

En este ensayo se introduce el des-ombligamiento como una categoría analítico- comprensiva que surge del ecomagicosentipensar de las comunidades chocoanas y del Pacífico colombiano para interrogar ocultamientos, limitaciones, vacíos, silencios, incomprensiones o reduccionismos reproducidos en investigaciones, políticas públicas, propuestas legislativas e intervenciones sociales mediante conceptos como: migración, desplazamiento forzado, movilidad, inmigración, emigración, migración, destierro y migradestierro. Asimismo, este concepto da cuenta de los impactos multidimensionales generados por la violencia armada y el extractivismo en territorios etnizados. A partir del enfoque teórico-metodológico de la hermenéutica del retorno, el texto propone nuevos marcos interpretativos y de intervención situados que reapropian perspectivas espirituales, organizativas, políticas, ontológicas, filosóficas y psicológicas asociadas al territorio y la territorialidad que pueden ser útiles en las narrativas sobre la guerra, los procesos de auto-reparación, la reconstrucción de la memoria, la construcción del vivir sabroso o del buen vivir.
