The growth of aerosol due to the aqueous phase oxidation of sulfur dioxide by ozone was measured in laboratory-generated clouds created in the Cosmics Leaving OUtdoor Droplets (CLOUD) chamber at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Experiments were performed at 10 and-10 °C, on acidic (sulfuric acid) and on partially to fully neutralised (ammonium sulfate) seed aerosol. Clouds were generated by performing an adiabatic expansion-pressurising the chamber to 220 hPa above atmospheric pressure, and then rapidly releasing the excess pressure, resulting in a cooling, condensation of water on the aerosol and a cloud lifetime of approximately 6 min. A model was developed to compare the observed aerosol growth with that predicted using oxidation rate constants previously measured in bulk solutions. The model captured the measured aerosol growth very well for experiments performed at 10 and-10 °C, indicating that, in contrast to some previous studies, the oxidation rates of SO2 in a dispersed aqueous system can be well represented by using accepted rate constants, based on bulk measurements. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first laboratory-based measurements of aqueous phase oxidation in a dispersed, supercooled population of droplets. The measurements are therefore important in confirming that the extrapolation of currently accepted reaction rate constants to temperatures below 0 °C is correct.

Purpose: To determine if single-port robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (SP-RARP) has higher rates of incisional hernias when compared with multi-port robotic-assisted radical prostatectomies (MP-RARP). Materials and Methods: A retrospective, single-institution review of all consecutive robotic prostatectomy cases between January 2017 and December 2022. Analyzed multi-port and single-port robotic prostatectomies performed by two high-volume surgeons. Measured primary outcome for the development of incisional hernias, as defined by computed tomography imaging and clinical documentation. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine the effect of the single-port approach on incisional hernia outcomes. Results: A total of 493 patients were included in the study (320 SP-RARPs and 173 MP-RARPs). The overall incisional hernia rate was 8.5% (SP-RARP 8.1% vs MP-RARP 9.2%, p = 0.669). A median follow-up time was 16.6 months and a median time from procedure to hernia diagnosis was 7.4 months. SP-RARP had shorter OR time than the MP-RARP (236 minutes vs 276 minutes, p < 0.001). Patients who developed hernias had higher body mass index (BMIs) than those who did not (30.7 vs 29, p = 0.009). Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that patients with higher BMI (odds ratio [OR] 1.07, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01-1.14) and a history of prior operation (OR 2.23, 95% CI 1.71-4.29) were more likely to develop incisional hernias. Cox regression analysis accounting for the difference in follow-up period demonstrated that SP-RARP 3.4× more likely to develop incisional hernias than MP-RARP (hazard ratio 3.38, 95% CI 1.50-7.58). Conclusions: Patients with higher BMIs and prior history of abdominal surgeries are at increased risk of developing postoperative incisional hernias. SP-RARP procedures confer a higher risk of postoperative incisional hernias.

Non-contact methods are useful to improve the quality control of particle filtration media. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the correlation between the filtration efficiency of a porous sheet and its ultrasonic properties obtained using a non-contact technique. An air-coupled ultrasonic technique is used to obtain rapid measurements without affecting the integrity of the material. High frequencies (from 0.1 to 2.5 MHz) are used to improve technique sensitivity, and transmitted waves are measured to probe the internal properties of the material. Measurements of transmission coefficient spectra (amplitude and phase) and the corresponding ultrasound velocity and attenuation coefficient at different frequencies are obtained for a set of filtration media with well-characterized properties. Results show that the ultrasonic properties of filtration media vary as a function of basis weight, and therefore filtration efficiency, for a given charge state. However, the effect of electrostatic charge on ultrasonic propagation is almost negligible, as expected. We conclude that ultrasonic transmission may provide a valuable tool for the continuous online monitoring of material quality during fabrication and as a method to tease apart mechanical and electrostatic contributions to particle filtration., (© 2024. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a novel coronavirus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic that can lead to severe respiratory distress requiring hospitalization and can be fatal. Media have reported that various dietary supplements (DS) or their combination with different medications can prevent infection or decrease disease severity. Here, we analyzed data collected from 15,830 patient follow-up telephone interviews from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences COVID-19 testing sites from March 15 to August 1, 2020. Within the REDCap database, we recorded patient demographics and DS and medication use. In total, data on DS and medication use was available for 8,150 study participants, of whom 21.9% and 4.1% reported using DS or medications, respectively, to either prevent or treat COVID-19. The majority of respondents were female (64%) and non-Hispanic whites (44.5%). Most individuals (64.5%) who took DS were younger than 50 years of age. Products such as vitamin C (1,013, 33.2%), multivitamins (722, 23.6%), and vitamin D (294, 9.6%) were the most commonly used DS among the responders. Analysis of the DS use and symptom scores association did not provide a strong evidence of beneficial health effects of DS. The results of this study demonstrate that a significantly higher proportion of study participants considered usage of DS to mitigate or prevent COVID-19-related symptoms compared to those who preferred medications. However, lack of observable health benefits associated with ingestion of DS suggests that more rigorous research is needed to substantiate the label claims.

Standards governing face masks differ in the test methods used to determine sub-micron particle filtration efficiency (PFE), such that the meaning of PFE is not universal. Unifying the meaning of PFE requires data using these different test methods to drive improvements in standards. This simple data set provides the equivalence between two major test methods used to assess PFE: (1) a test method using a neutralized, polydisperse sodium chloride (NaCl) and (2) a test method using an unneutralized, "monodisperse" polystyrene latex sphere (PSL) aerosols. The particle filtration efficiency (PFE) of a respirator or face mask is one of its key properties. While the physics of particle filtration results in the PFE being size-dependent, measurement standards are specified using a single, integrated PFE, for simplicity. This integrated PFE is commonly defined concerning either the number (NPFE) or mass (MPFE) distribution of particles as a function of size. This relationship is non-trivial; it is influenced by both the shape of the particle distribution and the fact that multiple practical definitions of particle size are used. This manuscript discusses the relationship between NPFE and MPFE in detail, providing a guide to practitioners. Our discussion begins with a description of the theory underlying different variants of PFE. We then present experimental results for a database of size-resolved PFE (SPFE) measurements for several thousand candidate respirators and filter media, including filter media with systematically varied properties and commercial samples that span 20%-99.8% MPFE. The observed relationships between NPFE and MPFE are discussed in terms of the most-penetrating particle size (MPPS) and charge state of the media. For the sodium chloride particles used here, we observed that the MPFE was greater than NPFE for charged materials and vice versa for uncharged materials. This relationship is observed because a shift from NPFE to MPFE weights the distribution toward larger sizes, while charged materials shift the MPPS to smaller sizes. Results are validated by comparing the output of a pair of automated filter testers, which are used in gauging standards compliance, to that of MPFE computed from a system capable of measuring SPFE over the 20 nm-500 nm range.

Despite the fact that atmospheric particulate organic nitrogen (ON) can significantly affect human health, ecosystems and the earth's climate system, qualitative and quantitative chemical characterization of ON remains limited due to its chemical complexity. In this study, the Aerodyne soot particle - high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (SP-AMS) was deployed for ambient measurements in Nanjing, China. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) was applied to the ON data to quantify the sources of ON in submicron aerosols. The averaged ON concentration was 1.24 μg m -3 , while the averaged total nitrogen (TN) in the aerosol was 20.26 μg m -3 . From the PMF ON analysis, a 5-factor solution was selected as the most representative and interpretable solution for the investigated dataset, including oxygenated OA (OOA ON ), amine-related OA ON (AMOA ON ), hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA ON ), industry OA (IOA ON ), and local primary OA (POA ON ) factors. The quantified ON ions were separated into families, including C x HN, C x H y NO, C 3 H <6 N, C x H 2x+2 N, C x H 2x N and Others, consistent with their contribution to each factor. The C x H y NO family mainly contributed to the OOA ON factor and suggested the presence of amides or amino acids. The C x H 2x+2 N family likely mostly originated from amines only contributing to the AMOA ON and HOA ON factors. The IOA ON and POA ON factors were resolved due to significant tracers in the mass spectra. Purpose: To compare visual outcomes, incidence of cystoid macular edema (CME), and rate of repeat epiretinal membrane (ERM) surgery following phacovitrectomy for primary and secondary ERM., Methods: Retrospective review of 178,856 cataract surgeries from 2003 to 2015. Eyes that underwent cataract surgery combined with ERM peel were included (n = 708). Eyes were divided into primary (n = 538) and secondary (n = 170) ERM groups. Patient demographics, visual acuity (VA), and postoperative CME were recorded., Results: Patients with secondary ERM had worse preoperative VA, 0.9 ± 0.6 logMAR (20/160 Snellen equivalent) as compared to patients with primary ERM, 0.6 ± 0.3 (20/80), respectively (p < 0.0001). There was no difference between the secondary and primary ERM groups in postoperative vision (0.5 ± 0.4 logMAR vs. 0.5 ± 0.3; p = 0.9962) or proportion with VA ≥ 20/40 (46.4% vs. 43.1%; p = 0.6744) at 12-24 weeks. Postoperative CME was twice as likely in the secondary ERM group (16.5%) compared to the primary ERM group (7.8%) (p = 0.0018). There was no difference in the rate of repeat ERM surgery between the secondary ERM group (1.8%) and the primary ERM group (1.5%) (p = 0.7308)., Conclusion: Eyes with secondary ERM had significant postoperative improvement in VA. They had worse preoperative VA and had a twofold increase in postoperative CME than primary ERM., (© 2021. Respirators, medical masks, and barrier face coverings all filter airborne particles using similar physical principles. However, they are tested for certification using a variety of standardized test methods, creating challenges for the comparison of differently certified products. We have performed systematic experiments to quantify and understand the differences between standardized test methods for N95 respirators (NIOSH TEB-APR-STP-0059 under US 42 CFR 84), medical face masks (ASTM F2299/F2100), and COVID-19-related barrier face coverings (ASTM F3502-21). Our experiments demonstrate the role of face velocity, particle properties (mean size, size variability, electric charge, density, and shape), measurement techniques, and environmental preconditioning. The measured filtration efficiency was most sensitive to changes in face velocity and particle charge. Relative to the NIOSH method, users of the ASTM F2299/F2100 method have commonly used non-neutralized (highly charged) aerosols as well as smaller face velocities, each of which may result in approximately 10% higher measured filtration efficiencies. In the NIOSH method, environmental conditioning at elevated humidity increased filtration efficiency in some commercial samples while decreasing it in others, indicating that measurement should be performed both with and without conditioning. Introduction: Pelvic organ prolapse is a highly prevalent condition that is commonly managed with surgical intervention. Our purpose was to determine associated factors and postoperative morbidity rates of early (≤1 day) vs late (>1 day) hospital discharge after outpatient colporrhaphy., Methods: From the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program® database, 11,652 female patients who received colporrhaphy between 2005 and 2016 were identified; 3,728 were stratified into the early discharge group and 7,924 into the late discharge group. Patient characteristics, surgical data and 30-day postoperative complications were recorded, and variables were compared between groups., Results: In comparison to the late discharge group, the early discharge group had a shorter mean operating time (p <0.001) and overall was less likely to suffer from 30-day morbidity (OR 0.67 [95% CI 0.55-0.82]), reoperation (OR 0.59 [95% CI 0.39-0.90]) or readmission (OR 0.40 [95% CI 0.26-0.90]). Factors independently associated with a lower likelihood of early discharge included age ≥55 years, higher body mass index, White race, current smoker, American Society of Anesthesiologists® classification IV/V and longer operating time. Increased likelihood of early discharge was associated with receiving colporrhaphy after 2012 and posterior colporrhaphy., Conclusions: Patients discharged from the hospital early had lower rates of postoperative morbidity than those discharged later. Early discharge was associated with procedures performed after 2012 and with isolated posterior colporrhaphy. Longer hospital stays were associated with longer operating times and older age, White race, obesity, comorbidities and history of smoking.

Soot is typically the dominant component of the nonvolatile particles emitted from internal combustion engines. Although soot is primarily composed of carbon, its chemistry, toxicity, and oxidation rates may be strongly influenced by internally mixed inorganic metal compounds (ash). Here, we describe the detailed microstructure of ash internally mixed with soot from four marine engines and one aviation engine. The engines were operated on different fuels and lubrication oils; the fuels included four residual fuels and five distillate fuels such as diesel, natural gas, and Jet A-1. Using annular-dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF-STEM), we observed that ash may occur either as distinct nodules on the soot particle (decorated) or as continuous streaks (painted). Both structures may exist within a single particle. Decorated soot was observed for both distillate and residual fuels and contained elements associated with either the fuel (V, Ni, Fe, S) or with the lubrication oil (Zn, Ca, P). Painted soot was observed only for residual-fuel soot, and only contained elements associated with the fuel. Additional composition measurements by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) of filter samples indicated that the internal mixing trends of ash with soot were consistent with the overall ash-to-carbon ratio of the sampled combustion aerosols. Painted soot may form when molten ash coagulates with or condenses onto soot within engines.

Smog chamber experiments were conducted to characterize the light absorption of brown carbon (BrC) from primary and photochemically aged coal combustion emissions. Light absorption was measured by the UV-visible spectrophotometric analysis of water and methanol extracts of filter samples. The single-scattering albedo at 450 nm was 0.73 ± 0.10 for primary emissions and 0.75 ± 0.13 for aged emissions. The light absorption coefficient at 365 nm of methanol extracts was higher than that of water extracts by a factor of 10 for primary emissions and a factor of 7 for aged emissions. This suggests that the majority of BrC is water-insoluble even after aging. The mass absorption efficiency of this BrC (MAE 365 ) for primary OA (POA) was dependent on combustion conditions, with an average of 0.84 ± 0.54 m 2 g -1 , which was significantly higher than that for aged OA (0.24 ± 0.18 m 2 g -1 ). Secondary OA (SOA) dominated aged OA and the decreased MAE 365 after aging indicates that SOA is less light absorbing than POA and/or that BrC is bleached (oxidized) with aging. The estimated MAE 365 of SOA (0.14 ± 0.08 m 2 g -1 ) was much lower than that of POA. A comparison of MAE 365 of residential coal combustion with other anthropogenic sources suggests that residential coal combustion emissions are among the strongest absorbing BrC organics.

The tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), is an important pest of cotton in many areas of the southern United States. An experiment was conducted at two locations in Mississippi during 2016 and 2017 to evaluate action thresholds for tarnished plant bug on a novel Bacillus thuringiensis cotton that expresses the Cry51Aa2.834&#95;16 toxin. Treatments included the current action threshold, a 2× threshold, and treatments where insecticides were only applied during the early season (preflower) or only during late season (during flowering) based on the current action thresholds. These were compared to an untreated control and a weekly insecticide use regime that received weekly insecticide sprays. All treatments were imposed on both Bt Cry1Aa2.834&#95;16 cotton and a nontraited cotton. The Bt Cry1Aa2.834&#95;16 trait reduced the number of tarnished plant bugs and injury, and improved yields compared to nontraited cotton. For all spray treatments except the weekly insecticide use regime, yields were greater for the Bt Cry51Aa2.834&#95;16 cotton than the nontraited cotton. In terms of thresholds, Bt Cry1Aa2.834&#95;16 cotton sprayed based on current action thresholds resulted in similar yields to the weekly insecticide use regime of both cotton types. In contrast, the 2× threshold resulted in lower yields than the current threshold for both cotton types. Though thresholds intermediate to the currently recommended action threshold and the 2× threshold were not tested, these data suggest that currently recommended action thresholds appear appropriate for Bt Cry51Aa2.834&#95;16 cotton. People quickly form summary representations that capture the statistical structure in a set of simultaneously-presented objects. We present evidence that such ensemble encoding is informed not only by the presented set of objects, but also by a meta-ensemble, or prototype, that captures the structure of previously viewed stimuli. Participants viewed four objects (shaded squares in Experiment 1; emotional expressions in Experiment 2) and estimated their average by adjusting a response object. Estimates were biased toward the central value of previous stimuli, consistent with Bayesian models of how people combine hierarchical sources of information. The results suggest that an inductively learned prototype may serve as a source of prior information to adjust ensemble estimates. To the extent that real environments present statistical structure in a given moment as well as consistently over time, ensemble encoding in real-world situations ought to take advantage of both kinds of regularity.

In-use exhaust stream CH 4 emissions from two dual fuel marine engines were characterized and strategies for CH 4 reduction were identified and evaluated. For this, a low-cost, portable, wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) system was developed. The performance of the developed WMS sensor was assessed using gas standards and demonstrated on a heavy-duty, diesel pilot ignited, direct-injection natural gas research engine through comparison to a flame ionization detector. The WMS sensor was subsequently used to measure the exhaust-stream CH 4 concentration from two diesel pilot-ignited, port-injected natural gas engines on a coastal vessel while under normal operation. Using cylinder deactivation to reduce the excess air ratio, λ, and vessel operation changes to minimize operation at lower loads, the total CH 4 emission were reduced by up to 33%. The measured, load specific CH 4 emissions were subsequently used to identify an improved vessel operation strategy, with an estimated 56-60% reduction in CH 4 emissions. These results demonstrate the importance of considering the real-world engine operation profile for accurate estimates of the global warming potential, as well as the utility of a WMS sensor for characterizing and mitigating in-use CH 4 emissions.

Light-absorbing organic carbon (i.e., brown carbon or BrC) in the atmospheric aerosol has significant contribution to light absorption and radiative forcing. However, the link between BrC optical properties and chemical composition remains poorly constrained. In this study, we combine spectrophotometric measurements and chemical analyses of BrC samples collected from July 2008 to June 2009 in urban Xi'an, Northwest China. Elevated BrC was observed in winter (5 times higher than in summer), largely due to increased emissions from wintertime domestic biomass burning. The light absorption coefficient of methanol-soluble BrC at 365 nm (on average approximately twice that of water-soluble BrC) was found to correlate strongly with both parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (parent-PAHs, 27 species) and their carbonyl oxygenated derivatives (carbonyl-OPAHs, 15 species) in all seasons ( r 2 > 0.61). These measured parent-PAHs and carbonyl-OPAHs account for on average ∼1.7% of the overall absorption of methanol-soluble BrC, about 5 times higher than their mass fraction in total organic carbon (OC, ∼0.35%). The fractional solar absorption by BrC relative to element carbon (EC) in the ultraviolet range (300-400 nm) is significant during winter (42 ± 18% for water-soluble BrC and 76 ± 29% for methanol-soluble BrC), which may greatly affect the radiative balance and tropospheric photochemistry and therefore the climate and air quality.

Heavy fuel oil (HFO) particulate matter (PM) emitted by marine engines is known to contain toxic heavy metals, including vanadium (V) and nickel (Ni). The toxicity of such metals will depend on the their chemical state, size distribution, and mixing state. Using online soot-particle aerosol mass spectrometry (SP-AMS), we quantified the mass of five metals (V, Ni, Fe, Na, and Ba) in HFO-PM soot particles produced by a marine diesel research engine. The in-soot metal concentrations were compared to in-PM 2.5 measurements by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). We found that <3% of total PM 2.5 metals was associated with soot particles, which may still be sufficient to influence in-cylinder soot burnout rates. Since these metals were most likely present as oxides, whereas studies on lower-temperature boilers report a predominance of sulfates, this result implies that the toxicity of HFO PM depends on its combustion conditions. Finally, we observed a 4-to-25-fold enhancement in the ratio V:Ni in soot particles versus PM 2.5 , indicating an enrichment of V in soot due to its lower nucleation/condensation temperature. As this enrichment mechanism is not dependent on soot formation, V is expected to be generally enriched within smaller HFO-PM particles from marine engines, enhancing its toxicity.

Sea spray is one of the largest natural aerosol sources and plays an important role in the Earth's radiative budget. These particles are inherently hygroscopic, that is, they take-up moisture from the air, which affects the extent to which they interact with solar radiation. We demonstrate that the hygroscopic growth of inorganic sea salt is 8-15% lower than pure sodium chloride, most likely due to the presence of hydrates. We observe an increase in hygroscopic growth with decreasing particle size (for particle diameters <150 nm) that is independent of the particle generation method. We vary the hygroscopic growth of the inorganic sea salt within a general circulation model and show that a reduced hygroscopicity leads to a reduction in aerosol-radiation interactions, manifested by a latitudinal-dependent reduction of the aerosol optical depth by up to 15%, while cloud-related parameters are unaffected. We propose that a value of κ s =1.1 (at RH=90%) is used to represent the hygroscopicity of inorganic sea salt particles in numerical models.

Memories of objects are biased toward what is typical of the category to which they belong. Prior research on memory for emotional facial expressions has demonstrated a bias towards an emotional expression prototype (e.g., slightly happy faces are remembered as happier). We investigate an alternate source of bias in memory for emotional expressions - the central tendency bias. The central tendency bias skews reconstruction of a memory trace towards the center of the distribution for a particular attribute. This bias has been attributed to a Bayesian combination of an imprecise memory for a particular object with prior information about its category. Until now, studies examining the central tendency bias have focused on simple stimuli. We extend this work to socially relevant, complex, emotional facial expressions. We morphed facial expressions on a continuum from sad to happy. Different ranges of emotion were used in four experiments in which participants viewed individual expressions and, after a variable delay, reproduced each face by adjusting a morph to match it. Estimates were biased toward the center of the presented stimulus range, and the bias increased at longer memory delays, consistent with the Bayesian prediction that as trace memory loses precision, category knowledge is given more weight. The central tendency effect persisted within and across emotion categories (sad, neutral, and happy). This article expands the scope of work on inductive category effects to memory for complex, emotional stimuli.

Fuzzy-trace theory posits independent verbatim and gist memory processes, a distinction that has implications for such applied topics as eyewitness testimony. This distinction between precise, literal verbatim memory and meaning-based, intuitive gist accounts for memory paradoxes including dissociations between true and false memory, false memories outlasting true memories, and developmental increases in false memory. We provide an overview of fuzzy-trace theory, and, using mathematical modeling, also present results demonstrating verbatim and gist memory in true and false recognition of narrative sentences and inferences. Results supported fuzzy-trace theory's dual-process view of memory: verbatim memory was relied on to reject meaning-consistent, but unpresented, sentences (via recollection rejection). However, verbatim memory was often not retrieved, and gist memory supported acceptance of these sentences (via similarity judgment and phantom recollection). Thus, mathematical models of words can be extended to explain memory for complex stimuli, such as narratives, the kind of memory interrogated in law.

Theoretical accounts of risky choice framing effects assume that decision makers interpret framing options as extensionally equivalent, such that if 600 lives are at stake, saving 200 implies that 400 die. However, many scholars have argued that framing effects are caused, instead, by filling in pragmatically implied information. This linguistic ambiguity hypothesis is grounded in neo-Gricean pragmatics, information leakage, and schema theory. In 2 experiments, we conducted critical tests of the linguistic ambiguity hypothesis and its relation to framing. We controlled for this crucial implied information by disambiguating it using instructions and detailed examples, followed by multiple quizzes. After disambiguating missing information, we presented standard framing problems plus truncated versions, varying types of missing information. Truncations were also critical tests of prospect theory and fuzzy trace theory. Participants were not only college students, but also middle-age adults (who showed similar results). Contrary to the ambiguity hypothesis, participants who interpreted missing information as complementary to stated information nonetheless showed robust framing effects. Fuzzy-trace theory distinguishes verbatim (literal, exact) from gist (meaningful) representations, predicting that reliance on gist increases with experience and expertise. Thus, many judgment-and-decision-making biases increase with development, such that cognition is colored by context in ways that violate logical coherence and probability theories. Nevertheless, this increase in gist-based intuition is adaptive: Gist is stable, less sensitive to interference, and easier to manipulate. Moreover, gist captures the functionally significant essence of information, supporting healthier and more robust decision processes. We describe how fuzzy-trace theory accounts for judgment-and-decision making phenomena, predicting the paradoxical arc of these processes with the development of experience and expertise. We present data linking gist memory processes to gist processing in decision making and provide illustrations of gist reliance in medicine, public health, and intelligence analysis.

Despite the importance of damage awards, juries are often at sea about the amounts that should be awarded, with widely differing awards for cases that seem comparable. We tested a new model of damage award decision making by systematically varying the size, context, and meaningfulness of numerical comparisons or anchors. As a result, we were able to elicit large differences in award amounts that replicated for 2 different cases. Although even arbitrary dollar amounts (unrelated to the cases) influenced the size of award judgments, the most consistent effects of numerical anchors were achieved when the amounts were meaningful in the sense that they conveyed the gist of numbers as small or large. Consistent with the model, the ordinal gist of the severity of plaintiff's damages and defendant's liability predicted damage awards, controlling for other factors such as motivation for the award-judgment task and perceived economic damages. Contrary to traditional dual-process approaches, numeracy and cognitive style (e.g., need for cognition and cognitive reflection) were not significant predictors of these numerical judgments, but they were associated with lower levels of variability once the gist of the judgments was taken into account. Implications for theory and policy are discussed.

Increasing rates of shigellosis among adult males, particularly men who have sex with men (MSM), have been documented in the United States, Canada, and Europe, and MSM appear to be at greater risk for infection with shigellae that are not susceptible to ciprofloxacin or azithromycin. Azithromycin is the first-line empiric antimicrobial treatment for shigellosis among children and is a second-line treatment among adults. Isolates collected in 2014 in two U.S. cities from outbreaks of shigellosis displayed highly similar pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns and decreased susceptibility to azithromycin (DSA). This report summarizes and compares the findings from investigations of the two outbreaks, which occurred among MSM in metropolitan Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, and Chicago, Illinois.

In December 2014, PulseNet, the national molecular subtyping network for foodborne disease, detected a multistate cluster of Shigella sonnei infections with an uncommon pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) pattern. CDC's National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) laboratory determined that isolates from this cluster were resistant to ciprofloxacin, the antimicrobial medication recommended to treat adults with shigellosis. To understand the scope of the outbreak and to try to identify its source, CDC and state and local health departments conducted epidemiologic and laboratory investigations. During May 2014-February 2015, PulseNet identified 157 cases in 32 states and Puerto Rico; approximately half were associated with international travel. Nine of the cases identified by PulseNet, and another 86 cases without PFGE data, were part of a related outbreak of ciprofloxacin-resistant shigellosis in San Francisco, California. Of 126 total isolates with antimicrobial susceptibility information, 109 (87%) were nonsusceptible to ciprofloxacin (108 were resistant, and one had intermediate susceptibility). Travelers need to be aware of the risks of acquiring multidrug-resistant pathogens, carefully wash their hands, and adhere to food and water precautions during international travel. Clinicians should request stool cultures and antimicrobial susceptibilities when they suspect shigellosis, and counsel shigellosis patients to follow meticulous hygiene regimens while ill.

As predicted by fuzzy-trace theory, people with a range of training—from untrained adolescents to expert physicians—are susceptible to biases and errors in judgment and perception of HIV-AIDS risk. To explain why this occurs, we introduce fuzzy-trace theory as a theoretical perspective that describes these errors to be a function of knowledge deficits, gist-based representation of risk categories, retrieval failure for risk knowledge, and processing interference (e.g., base-rate neglect) in combining risk estimates. These principles explain how people perceive HIV-AIDS risk and why they take risks with potentially lethal outcomes, often despite rote (verbatim) knowledge.For example, people inappropriately generalize the wrong gist about condoms' effectiveness against fluid-borne disease to diseases that are transferred skin-to-skin, such as HPV. We also describe how variation in processing in adolescence (e.g., more verbatim processing compared to adults) can be a route to risk-taking that explains key aspects of why many people are infected with HIV in youth, as well as how interventions that emphasize bottom-line gists communicate risks effectively.

Intelligence agents make risky decisions routinely, with serious consequences for national security. Although common sense and most theories imply that experienced intelligence professionals should be less prone to irrational inconsistencies than college students, we show the opposite. Moreover, the growth of experience-based intuition predicts this developmental reversal. We presented intelligence agents, college students, and postcollege adults with 30 risky-choice problems in gain and loss frames and then compared the three groups' decisions. The agents not only exhibited larger framing biases than the students, but also were more confident in their decisions. The postcollege adults (who were selected to be similar to the students) occupied an interesting middle ground, being generally as biased as the students (sometimes more biased) but less biased than the agents. An experimental manipulation testing an explanation for these effects, derived from fuzzy-trace theory, made the students look as biased as the agents. These results show that, although framing biases are irrational (because equivalent outcomes are treated differently), they are the ironical output of cognitively advanced mechanisms of meaning making.

An aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometer (ATOFMS) was used to detect trimethylamine (TMA) in 0.52-1.9 μm particles at urban and rural sites in Southern Ontario during the summer and winter of 2007. During the summer, TMA-containing particles were observed exclusively during high relative humidity or fog events at both the urban and rural sites. In the wintertime, greater concentrations of TMA-containing particles were linked to cloud processing of aerosol in air masses originating from over agricultural and livestock areas. A laboratory study revealed that, at high relative humidity (∼ 100%), gas phase TMA at concentrations ranging from 2 to 20,000 ppt partitions preferentially to acidic particles present in the ambient air. On the basis of the field and laboratory studies, it appears that gas phase TMA present in ambient air partitions onto pre-existing particles preferentially during periods of acidic cloud/fog processing, leading to the presence of TMA-containing particles in the 0.52-1.9 μm size range.

Various complications are associated with the use of central venous catheters for total parenteral nutrition; cardiac tamponade is one of the most severe. Four cases are reported of cardiac tamponade during total parenteral nutrition: three of them were related to cardiac perforation by the tip of the catheter, placed in the right atrium; the fourth case may have been due to cardiac perforation or to an extraintestinal complication of inflammatory bowel disease. Hydropericardium may manifest itself soon after the catheter is inserted or, more usually, some days or weeks later. Immediate diagnosis is mandatory: a sudden and unexpected deterioration in a patient receiving total parenteral nutrition through a central venous catheter, with shock, heart failure, cyanosis, congestion of neck veins should arouse suspicion of hydropericardium. Long term undernutrition, a small atrophic heart, steroid treatment may also contribute to cardiac perforation. Immediate aspiration of the hydropericardium may be life-saving: if possible, the fluid is evacuated through the catheter while still in place; otherwise, pericardiocentesis must be immediately performed. Such complications can be prevented by: the use of flexible silicone or polyurethane catheters instead of rigid polyethylene catheters, especially for long term use; a correct positioning of the catheter tip in the superior vena cava in its extrapericardial sector, as it can be checked by chest X-ray. This examination, with opacification of the catheter with contrast medium, must be repeated because of the possibility of secondary displacement of the catheter.

The authors report 114 cases of acute poisoning by rodenticides (chloralose). The clinical symptoms associate coma, myoclonic jerks and bronchorrhea. Metabolic acidosis is a common finding. Despite the initial gravity, the prognosis of chloralose intoxication is excellent, provided that a symptomatic treatment is instituted early.
