Results from the last FTU campaigns on the deuterium large (wrt FTU volume) pellet REs suppression capability, mainly due to the induced burst MHD activity expelling REs seed are presented for discharges with 0.5 MA and 5.3T. Clear indications of avalanche multiplication of REs following single pellet injection on 0.36 MA flat-top discharges is shown together with quantitative indications of dissipative effects in terms of critical electrical field increase due to fan-like instabilities. Analysis of large fan-like instabilities on post-disruption RE beams, that seem to be correlated with low electrical field and background density drops, reveal their strong RE energy suppression capability suggesting a new strategy for RE energy suppression controlling large fan instabilities. We demonstrate how such density drops can be induced using modulated ECRH power on post-disruption beams., Comment: DRAFT that will be submitted to NF (the conference version is on FEC/IAEA conference 2020)

- Abstract
We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases.

- Abstract
We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases.

- Abstract
Within the EUROfusion MST1 work package, a series of experiments has been conducted on AUG and TCV devices to disentangle the role of plasma fueling and plasma shape for the onset of small ELM regimes. On both devices, small ELM regimes with high confinement are achieved if and only if two conditions are fulfilled at the same time. Firstly, the plasma density at the separatrix must be large enough (ne,sep/nG ∼ 0.3), leading to a pressure profile flattening at the separatrix, which stabilizes type-I ELMs. Secondly, the magnetic configuration has to be close to a double null (DN), leading to a reduction of the magnetic shear in the extreme vicinity of the separatrix. As a consequence, its stabilizing effect on ballooning modes is weakened.

- Abstract
Diagnosing soft x-ray (SXR) emission from tokamaks represents a unique source of information, since it allows the study of several plasma parameters, such as the electron and ion temperature, the investigation of the ionization equilibrium, particle and impurities transport and the study of MHD fluctuations and disruptions. A new SXR diagnostic system called EXODUS (Enhanced X-ray Optimized Detector for Use in multiple Scenarios) is under development with the aim to obtain energy resolved SXR emission profiles from the plasma with a high time resolution (<0.1 ms). The system is based on the Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) technology coupled with the new data acquisition system especially designed for GEM called GEMINI, which gives the possibility to obtain information about the energy deposited in the detector by the incoming radiation using the so called Time-Over-Threshold technique on each detector channel. The information of the deposited energy allows the study of the SXR emission from the plasma resolved in space, energy and time. There are several advantages in the use of GEM based detector in the harsh environment of a tokamak. First of all, it offers very high rate capabilities (up to 1 MHz/mm2), giving the possibility to obtain sub-ms time resolution together with sub-mm spatial resolution. The high counting rate and the high spatial resolution allow the installation of the detector in a pinhole camera very close to the tokamak vacuum barrier, producing very high statistic measurements. Finally, if properly designed, GEM detectors are intrinsically insensitive to gamma and neutron irradiation, allowing obtaining an excellent signal to noise ratio. Retina and optic nerve are sites of extra-cerebral manifestations of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles of hyperphosphorylated tau protein are detected in eyes from AD patients and transgenic animals in correlation with inflammation, reduction of synapses, visual deficits, loss of retinal cells and nerve fiber. However, neither the pathological relevance of other post-translational tau modifications—such as truncation with generation of toxic fragments—nor the potential neuroprotective action induced by their in vivo clearance have been investigated in the context of AD retinal degeneration. We have recently developed a monoclonal tau antibody (12A12mAb) which selectively targets the neurotoxic 20–22 kDa NH2-derived peptide generated from pathological truncation at the N-terminal domain of tau without cross-reacting with its full-length normal protein. Previous studies have shown that 12A12mAb, when intravenously (i.v.)-injected into 6-month-old Tg2576 animals, markedly improves their AD-like, behavioural and neuropathological syndrome. By taking advantage of this well-established tau-directed immunization regimen, we found that 12A12mAb administration also exerts a beneficial action on biochemical, mor- phological and metabolic parameters (i.e. APP/Aβ processing, tau hyperphosphorylation, neuroinflammation, syn- aptic proteins, microtubule stability, mitochondria-based energy production, neuronal death) associated with ocular injury in the AD phenotype. These findings prospect translational implications in the AD field by: (1) showing for the first time that cleavage of tau takes part in several pathological changes occurring in vivo in affected retinas and vitre- ous bodies and that its deleterious effects are successfully antagonized by administration of the specific 12A12mAb; (2) shedding further insights on the tight connections between neurosensory retina and brain, in particular following tau-based immunotherapy. In our view, the parallel response we detected in this preclinical animal model, both in the eye and in the hippocampus, following i.v. 12A12mAb injection opens novel diagnostic and therapeutic avenues for the clinical management of cerebral and extracerebral AD signs in human beings.

23. Intraneural electrical stimulation of median nerve: a simulation study on sensory and motor fascicles

Neuroprostheses can be an innovative solution to improve quality of life of upper limb amputees. In this framework, the recovery of sensory feedback is a property widely requested by amputee subjects. Neural prostheses are based on neural interfaces that allow delivering direct current stimuli to the nerve fibers. The study of the interaction between the nerve and the electrode is fundamental to investigate activation properties in the nerve. Furthermore, the results could provide useful insight into improve the design of the electrodes and to advance and ameliorate tactile sensations, elicited by these interfaces, obtaining tactile feedback more like natural sensations. This work aims at studying, by means of a FEM Neuron computational model, the axon fibers activation by means of neural stimulation provided through the intraneural electrodes DS-file. Three different types of stimulation waveforms (i.e. biphasic charge balanced stimulus with inter-pulse delay, biphasic charge balanced stimulus without inter-pulse delay, biphasic charge unbalanced stimulus with inter-pulse delay), three different nerve fascicles, i.e. two sensory and one motor fascicle, and ten distances from the electrode in the fascicles, are considered. The efficacy of the stimulation expressed as the percentage of activation of the fibers, and the safety, in terms of current intensity and used waveform, are studied in the previously described different conditions and the results are compared. The obtained results show that: i. stimulating a sensory fascicle with implanted active sites can activate a fascicle close to it, but not all the fascicles belonging to the same nerve. In fact, in the nerve considered in this study, a motor fascicle cannot be activated due to the values of the electrical potential which are too low to activate the fibers; ii. the current intensity necessary to activate fibers increases according to the distance from the source of the stimulus; iii. by using a biphasic charge unbalanced stimulus, the threshold to activate the fibers is lower than using the other tested waveforms. It is an important result because the stimulation is efficient and safer since current intensity is lower than the one used for the other two waveforms.

Research on magnetic confinement of high-temperature plasmas has the ultimate goal of harnessing nuclear fusion for the production of electricity. Although the tokamak1 is the leading toroidal magnetic-confinement concept, it is not without shortcomings and the fusion community has therefore also pursued alternative concepts such as the stellarator. Unlike axisymmetric tokamaks, stellarators possess a three-dimensional (3D) magnetic field geometry. The availability of this additional dimension opens up an extensive configuration space for computational optimization of both the field geometry itself and the current-carrying coils that produce it. Such an optimization was undertaken in designing Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X)2, a large helical-axis advanced stellarator (HELIAS), which began operation in 2015 at Greifswald, Germany. A major drawback of 3D magnetic field geometry, however, is that it introduces a strong temperature dependence into the stellarator’s non-turbulent ‘neoclassical’ energy transport. Indeed, such energy losses will become prohibitive in high-temperature reactor plasmas unless a strong reduction of the geometrical factor associated with this transport can be achieved; such a reduction was therefore a principal goal of the design of W7-X. In spite of the modest heating power currently available, W7-X has already been able to achieve high-temperature plasma conditions during its 2017 and 2018 experimental campaigns, producing record values of the fusion triple product for such stellarator plasmas3,4. The triple product of plasma density, ion temperature and energy confinement time is used in fusion research as a figure of merit, as it must attain a certain threshold value before net-energy-producing operation of a reactor becomes possible1,5. Here we demonstrate that such record values provide evidence for reduced neoclassical energy transport in W7-X, as the plasma profiles that produced these results could not have been obtained in stellarators lacking a comparably high level of neoclassical optimization., Previously documented record values of the fusion triple product in the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X are shown to be evidence for reduced neoclassical energy transport in this optimized device.

The diagnosis of soft X-ray (SXR) emission from tokamaks represents a unique source of information, since it allows the study of several plasma parameters, such as the electron and ion temperature, the investigation of the ionization equilibrium, particle and runaway transport and the study of MHD fluctuations and disruptions. A new 2D-SXR diagnostic system called EXODUS (Enhanced X-ray Optimized Detector for Use in multiple Scenarios) has been developed with the aim to combine 2D energy resolved SXR emission profiles from the plasma with a high time (< 0.1 ms) and spatial resolution (< 3 mm2). The EXODUS system is based on the Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) technology coupled with a padded anode readout and a new data acquisition system custom designed for GEM called GEMINI. In this contribution we will describe the laboratory characterization carried out on the first detector prototype using a quasi-monochromatic X-rays beam at very high rate (> 150 MHz) and the design of a enhanced version of the detector that is planned for installation on a tokamak in the near future. Preliminary measurements taken on plasma will be also shown.

The high field, high density tokamak FTU closed its 30-years of operation at the end of 2019. FTU is a circular machine (R0=0.93 m, a=0.29 m) with an Inconel Vacuum Vessel, Ni and Fe being its dominant elements, and Mo poloidal and toroidal limiters. The relatively high plasma densities, in combination with baking and boronization conditioning techniques, have ensured the possibility of producing plasmas characterized by an extremely low level of impurities of any kind, thus making FTU especially well-suited for investigating non-intrinsic impurities and the performances of liquid metal limiters under high thermal loads (up to 18 MW/m2). Initial tests were performed with a Lithium Liquid Limiter, while the more recent experiments have explored the plasma behavior with a Tin Liquid Limiter (TLL). Both are based on the innovative Capillary Porous System [1]. Lithium contamination was considerable, and traces can occasionally still be seen on various spectroscopic diagnostics. Oxygen is hardly present, and C is also low; N is detected at times, while He, Ne and Argon are detected when injected for diagnostic purposes.

Analyses of experimental data collected in the last FTU campaign provide interesting results on Runaway Electrons (REs) suppression by means of large (wrt FTU plasma volume) deuterium pellets on RE quiescent discharges, mainly inducing bursts of MHD activity that expel the RE seeds. This phenomenon was found to be very reproducible on discharges at 0.5 MA and 5.3 T. Pellets injected during current ramp-ups are also shown to lead to a complete suppression of the RE seed; however, they triggered disruptions as well. These promising results on pellet cleaning effects for different RE quiescent scenarios are discussed. Avalanche multiplication of REs after single pellet injection on 0.36 MA RE quiescent discharges is reported. We provide quantitative indications of RE mitigation effects in terms of increased Connor-Hastie (critical) electrical field due to Anomalous Doppler Instabilities (ADI) for RE quiescent scenarios and post-disruption RE beams. Analysis of large fan-like instabilities on post-disruption RE beams, that seem correlated to the applied negative electrical field and the background density drops, revealed their strong capability to dissipate the RE energy increasing their pitch angle, expelling some of them, and transferring a large fraction of their magnetic energy to the background plasma. Then, ADI can lead to efficient RE energy dissipation (on FTU) as well as full conversion from runaway into thermal electrons (on TCV), indicating a new possible strategy for RE mitigation by controlling the onset of large fan-like instabilities. We also show that short pulses of ECRH, combined with D2 gas puffing, generate a density increase that gives way to a density decrease, when ECRH is switched off, triggering ADI and opening the path to a possible alternative RE mitigation strategy.

Since the 2016 IAEA Fusion Energy Conference, FTU operations have been mainly devoted to experiments on runaway electrons and investigations into a tin liquid limiter; other experiments have involved studies of elongated plasmas and dust. The tearing mode onset in the high density regime has been studied by means of the linear resistive code MARS, and the highly collisional regimes have been investigated. New diagnostics, such as a runaway electron imaging spectroscopy system for in-flight runaway studies and a triple Cherenkov probe for the measurement of escaping electrons, have been successfully installed and tested, and new capabilities of the collective Thomson scattering and the laser induced breakdown spectroscopy diagnostics have been explored.

The quenching of the near infrared light emission in Er(super 3+) complexes induced by the resonant dipolar interaction between the rare-earth ion and high frequency vibrations of the organic ligand is investigated. The model accounts well for the available experimental results in Er(super 3+) complexes, and predicts an ~ 100% light emission quantum yield in fully halogenated systems.

- Abstract
The optimized superconducting stellarator device Wendelstein 7-X (with major radiusR = 5.5 m, minor radius a = 0.5 m, and 30 m3 plasma volume) restarted operation after the assembly of a graphite heat shield and 10 inertially cooled island divertor modules. This paper reports on the results from the first high-performance plasma operation. Glow discharge conditioning and ECRH conditioning discharges in helium turned out to be important for density and edge radiation control. Plasma densities of 1–4.5 × 1019 m−3 with central electron temperatures 5–10 keV were routinely achieved with hydrogen gas fueling, frequently terminated by a radiative collapse. In a first stage, plasma densities up to 1.4 × 1020 m−3 were reached with hydrogen pellet injection and helium gas fueling. Here, the ions are indirectly heated, and at a central density of 8 · 1019 m−3 a temperature of 3.4 keV with Te/Ti = 1 was transiently accomplished, which corresponds to nTi(0)τE = 6.4 × 1019 keV s m−3 with a peak diamagnetic energy of 1.1 MJ and volume-averaged normalized plasma pressure β = 1.2%. The routine access to high plasma densities was opened with boronization of the first wall. After boronization, the oxygen impurity content was reduced by a factor of 10, the carbon impurity content by a factor of 5. The reduced (edge) plasma radiation level gives routinely access to higher densities without radiation collapse, e.g. well above 1 × 1020 m−2 line integrated density and Te = Ti = 2 keV central temperatures at moderate ECRH power. Both X2 and O2 mode ECRH schemes were successfully applied. Core turbulence was measured with a phase contrast imaging diagnostic and suppression of turbulence during pellet injection was observed.

- Abstract
Within the EUROfusion MST1 work package, a series of experiments has been conducted on AUG and TCV devices to disentangle the role of plasma fueling and plasma shape for the onset of small ELM regimes. On both devices, small ELM regimes with high confinement are achieved if and only if two conditions are fulfilled at the same time. Firstly, the plasma density at the separatrix must be large enough (ne,sep/nG ~ 0.3), leading to a pressure profile flattening at the separatrix, which stabilizes type-I ELMs. Secondly, the magnetic configuration has to be close to a double null (DN), leading to a reduction of the magnetic shear in the extreme vicinity of the separatrix. As a consequence, its stabilizing effect on ballooning modes is weakened.

Experiments on runaway electrons have been performed for the determination of the critical electric field for runaway generation. A large database of post-disruption runaway beams has been analyzed in order to identify linear dynamical models for new position and current runaway beam controllers, and experiments of electron cyclotron assisted plasma start-up have shown the presence of runaway electrons also below the expected electric field threshold, indicating that the radio-frequency power acts as seeding for fast electrons. A linear micro-stability analysis of neon-doped pulses has been carried out to investigate the mechanisms leading to the observed density peaking. A study of the ion drift effects on the MARFE instability has been performed and the peaking of density profile in the high density regime has been well reproduced using a thermo-diffusive pinch in the particle transport equation. The study of the density limit performed in the past has been extended towards lower values of toroidal magnetic field and plasma current. The analysis of the linear stability of the 2/1 tearing mode observed in high density plasmas has highlighted a destabilization with increasing peaking of the current profile during the density ramp-up, while the final phase of the mode temporal evolution is characterized by limit cycles on the amplitude/frequency plane. A liquid lithium limiter with thermal load capability up to 10 MW m−2 has been tested. The pulse duration has been extended up to 4.5 s and elongated configurations have been obtained for 3.5 s, with the X-point just outside the plasma chamber. A W/Fe sample has been exposed in the scrape-off layer in order to study the sputtering of Fe and the W enrichment of the surface layer. Dusts have been collected and analyzed, showing that the metallic population exhibits a high fraction of magnetic grains. A new diagnostic for in-flight runaway electron studies has allowed the image and the visible/infrared spectrum of the forward and backward synchrotron radiation to be provided simultaneously. A fast infrared camera for thermo-graphic analysis has provided the pattern of the toroidal limiter heating by disruption heat loads, and a triple-GEM detector has been tested for soft x-ray diagnostics. The collective Thomson scattering diagnostic has been upgraded and used for investigations on parametric decay instability excitation by electron cyclotron beams correlated with magnetic islands, and new capabilities of the Cherenkov probe have been explored in the presence of beta-induced Alfvén eigenmodes associated to high amplitude magnetic islands. The two leading concepts for confining high-temperature fusion plasmas are the tokamak and the stellarator. Tokamaks are rotationally symmetric and use a large plasma current to achieve confinement, whereas stellarators are non-axisymmetric and employ three-dimensionally shaped magnetic field coils to twist the field and confine the plasma. As a result, the magnetic field of a stellarator needs to be carefully designed to minimize the collisional transport arising from poorly confined particle orbits, which would otherwise cause excessive power losses at high plasma temperatures. In addition, this type of transport leads to the appearance of a net toroidal plasma current, the so-called bootstrap current. Here, we analyse results from the first experimental campaign of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, showing that its magnetic-field design allows good control of bootstrap currents and collisional transport. The energy confinement time is among the best ever achieved in stellarators, both in absolute figures (τE > 100 ms) and relative to the stellarator confinement scaling. The bootstrap current responds as predicted to changes in the magnetic mirror ratio. These initial experiments confirm several theoretically predicted properties of Wendelstein 7-X plasmas, and already indicate consistency with optimization measures. Results from the first experimental campaign of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator demonstrate that its magnetic-field design grants good control of parasitic plasma currents, leading to long energy confinement times.
