We measure the energy emitted by extensive air showers in the form of radio emission in the frequency range from 30 to 80 MHz. Exploiting the accurate energy scale of the Pierre Auger Observatory, we obtain a radiation energy of 15.8 \pm 0.7 (stat) \pm 6.7 (sys) MeV for cosmic rays with an energy of 1 EeV arriving perpendicularly to a geomagnetic field of 0.24 G, scaling quadratically with the cosmic-ray energy. A comparison with predictions from state-of-the-art first-principle calculations shows agreement with our measurement. The radiation energy provides direct access to the calorimetric energy in the electromagnetic cascade of extensive air showers. Comparison with our result thus allows the direct calibration of any cosmic-ray radio detector against the well-established energy scale of the Pierre Auger Observatory., Comment: Replaced with published version. The Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) is part of the Pierre Auger Observatory and is used to detect the radio emission of cosmic-ray air showers. These observations are compared to the data of the surface detector stations of the Observatory, which provide well-calibrated information on the cosmic-ray energies and arrival directions. The response of the radio stations in the 30 to 80 MHz regime has been thoroughly calibrated to enable the reconstruction of the incoming electric field. For the latter, the energy deposit per area is determined from the radio pulses at each observer position and is interpolated using a two-dimensional function that takes into account signal asymmetries due to interference between the geomagnetic and charge-excess emission components. The spatial integral over the signal distribution gives a direct measurement of the energy transferred from the primary cosmic ray into radio emission in the AERA frequency range. We measure 15.8 MeV of radiation energy for a 1 EeV air shower arriving perpendicularly to the geomagnetic field. This radiation energy -- corrected for geometrical effects -- is used as a cosmic-ray energy estimator. Performing an absolute energy calibration against the surface-detector information, we observe that this radio-energy estimator scales quadratically with the cosmic-ray energy as expected for coherent emission. We find an energy resolution of the radio reconstruction of 22% for the data set and 17% for a high-quality subset containing only events with at least five radio stations with signal., Comment: Replaced with published version. Neutrinos in the cosmic ray flux with energies near 1 EeV and above are detectable with the Surface Detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory. We report here on searches through Auger data from 1 January 2004 until 20 June 2013. No neutrino candidates were found, yielding a limit to the diffuse flux of ultra-high energy neutrinos that challenges the Waxman-Bahcall bound predictions. Neutrino identification is attempted using the broad time-structure of the signals expected in the SD stations, and is efficiently done for neutrinos of all flavors interacting in the atmosphere at large zenith angles, as well as for "Earth-skimming" neutrino interactions in the case of tau neutrinos. In this paper the searches for downward-going neutrinos in the zenith angle bins $60^\circ-75^\circ$ and $75^\circ-90^\circ$ as well as for upward-going neutrinos, are combined to give a single limit. The $90\%$ C.L. single-flavor limit to the diffuse flux of ultra-high energy neutrinos with an $E^{-2}$ spectrum in the energy range $1.0 \times 10^{17}$ eV - $2.5 \times 10^{19}$ eV is $E_\nu^2 dN_\nu/dE_\nu < 6.4 \times 10^{-9}~ {\rm GeV~ cm^{-2}~ s^{-1}~ sr^{-1}}$., Comment: Replaced with published version. A measurement of the cosmic-ray spectrum for energies exceeding $4{\times}10^{18}$ eV is presented, which is based on the analysis of showers with zenith angles greater than $60^{\circ}$ detected with the Pierre Auger Observatory between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2013. The measured spectrum confirms a flux suppression at the highest energies. Above $5.3{\times}10^{18}$ eV, the "ankle", the flux can be described by a power law $E^{-\gamma}$ with index $\gamma=2.70 \pm 0.02 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.1\,\text{(sys)}$ followed by a smooth suppression region. For the energy ($E_\text{s}$) at which the spectral flux has fallen to one-half of its extrapolated value in the absence of suppression, we find $E_\text{s}=(5.12\pm0.25\,\text{(stat)}^{+1.0}_{-1.2}\,\text{(sys)}){\times}10^{19}$ eV., Comment: Replaced with published version. Chacun de nous souhaite finir ses jours chez lui, entouré des siens et dans son lit. En réalité, nous mourons souvent à l'hôpital, la nuit, et seuls. Comment accompagner au mieux quelqu'un vers la mort, à son domicile ? Les médecins et les soignants sont-ils formés pour un tel accompagnement ? Alain Cordier et Roland Lallemand, relatant ici le récit de quelques fins de vie, montrent que cette voie est possible, dans l'attention des personnes malades et le respect de leurs volontés. Ce précis de soins palliatifs à domicile propose de manière simple des éclaircissements et un soutien à l'entourage, en particulier aux aidants naturels. Il s'adresse aux soignants ou futurs soignants, mais aussi à toute personne qui s'interroge sur un « bien mourir » ou un « mieux mourir », aux malades que nous sommes ou serons. Quelle éthique peut guider le médecin engagé dans l'accompagnement de la fin de vie ? Légiférer est-il toujours la bonne réponse aux questions qui se posent ? Ce livre est un livre d'espoir.

In this paper, we present XtremWeb, a Global Computing platform used to generate monte carlos showers in Auger, an HEP experiment to study the highest energy cosmic rays at Mallargue-Mendoza, Argentina. XtremWeb main goal, as a Global Computing platform, is to compute distributed applications using idle time of widely interconnected machines. It is especially dedicated to -but not limited to- multi-parameters applications such as monte carlos computations; its security mechanisms ensuring not only hosts integrity but also results certification and its fault tolerant features, encouraged us to test it and, finally, to deploy it as to support our CPU needs to simulate showers. We first introduce Auger computing needs and how Global Computing could help. We then detail XtremWeb architecture and goals. The fourth and last part presents the profits we have gained to choose this platform. We conclude on what could be done next.

Malgré une dépense publique en faveur des personnes en situation de handicap en croissance exponentielle et la première d'Europe (pour une population estimée à 5 millions de personnes), rien n'y fait : la personne handicapée en France n'a pas la même chance que dans les pays anglo-saxons. Les réflexes d'aides de la société ont amené à mettre trop souvent la personne handicapée à part, à l'écart. Le système français aboutit au final au confinement hospitalier des personnes, avec les conséquences humaines et financières que l'on connait. L'un des obstacles à l'intégration c'est la peur que suscite le handicap, car la société refuse de le voir. Pourtant on peut ne pas l'avoir. Les enfants dans les écoles ne l'ont pas. For more than 30 years, networks of detectors on the ground have observed ten cosmic rays of probably extragalactic origin, whose energies exceed $10^20 eV$. The Pierre AUGER Observatory, currently in construction in Argentina, was especially designed to clear up the mystery of their origin. The first part of this thesis describes physical problems and the techniques of detection used. Next comes the calibration part. It is approched through : - The development of a new method to survey the water level ; - The setting up of an experiment to measure the surface detector response to electrons of a few MeV. Then, finally, 3 chapters are devoted to expose new methods of analyses aiming at determining the composition of the primary cosmic rays and at studying the physical phenomena which take place in the development of the showers in the atmosphere.; Depuis plus de 30 ans, des réseaux de détecteurs au sol ont observé une dizaine de rayons cosmiques d'origine probablement extragalactique, dont les énergies excèdent $10^20$ eV. L'Observatoire Pierre AUGER, actuellement en construction en Argentine, a été spécialement conçu pour éclaircir le mystère de leur origine. La première partie de cette thèse a été consacrée à l'exposé de la problématique physique et aux techniques de détection utilisées. La partie suivante traite du développement d'un nouvel outil de mesure du niveau d'eau dans les détecteurs de surface et de la mise en oeuvre d'une expérience de calibration des détecteurs à des électrons de quelques MeV. Puis finalement, 3 chapitres sont consacrés à l'exposé de nouvelles méthodes d'analyses visant à determiner la composition du rayonnement cosmique primaire et à étudier les phénomènes physiques qui ont lieu dans le développement des gerbes dans l'atmosphère.

The Pierre Auger Observatory was especially designed to obtain significant statistics on ultra high energy cosmic rays (more than 1019 eV) in order to understand their origin. It associates two detection techniques for the atmospheric showers which result from the interaction of cosmic rays with the atmosphere : fluorescence telescopes measure the longitudinal profile of the shower and an array of detectors on the ground samples the lateral distribution. After a first chapter introducing cosmic rays, the detection of atmospheric showers by the Pierre Auger Observatory is presented. The third chapter is dedicated to the description of tools that were realized as part of bringing the experiment's database into service at the IN2P3 Computing Center at Lyon. We then present the analysis of data available thanks to the installation of the engineering array (EA) on the Observatory's southern site. Initially, the recorded events allowed us to study various calibration constants of the surface detectors. Subsequently, our work was devoted to the reconstruction of the events, 11 months of data were analyzed. Lastly, we present a Monte Carlo analysis performed in view of determining the nature of these cosmic rays. Three parameters of the atmospheric showers, measurable by the surface detector and providing discrimination between different primary particles, were extracted and compared with the data of the EA.; L'Observatoire Pierre Auger a été spécialement conçu pour acquérir une statistique importante de rayons cosmiques d'ultra haute énergie (supérieure à 1019 eV) afin d'en comprendre l'origine. Il associe deux techniques de détection des gerbes atmosphériques, produit de l'interaction des rayons cosmiques avec l'atmosphère : des télescopes à fluorescence mesurent le profil longitudinal de la gerbe et un réseau de détecteurs au sol échantillonne le profil latéral. Après une présentation sur les rayons cosmiques, la détection des gerbes atmosphériques par l'Observatoire Pierre Auger est exposée. Le troisième chapitre est consacré à la description d'outils qui ont été réalisés dans le cadre de la mise en place de la base de données de l'expérience au Centre de Calcul de l'IN2P3 à Lyon. Nous abordons ensuite les analyses que nous avons pu mener grâce à la mise en place du réseau prototype sur le site sud de l'Observatoire. Dans un premier temps, les événements enregistrés ont permis d'étudier différentes constantes de calibration des détecteurs de surface. Nous nous sommes ensuite consacrés à la reconstruction des événements, 11 mois de prise de données ont été analysés. Enfin, une analyse Monte Carlo a été menée pour déterminer la nature de ces rayons cosmiques. Trois paramètres des gerbes atmosphériques, mesurables par le détecteur de surface et permettant de discriminer entre les différents types de particules primaires, ont été extraits et comparés avec les données du réseau prototype.
