We present the localization and host galaxy of FRB 20190208A, a repeating source of fast radio bursts (FRBs) discovered using CHIME/FRB. As part of the PRECISE repeater localization program on the EVN, we monitored FRB 20190208A for 65.6 hours at $\sim1.4$ GHz and detected a single burst, which led to its VLBI localization with 260 mas uncertainty (2$\sigma$). Follow-up optical observations with the MMT Observatory ($i\gtrsim 25.7$ mag (AB)) found no visible host at the FRB position. Subsequent deeper observations with the GTC, however, revealed an extremely faint galaxy ($r=27.32 \pm0.16$ mag), very likely ($99.95 \%$) associated with FRB 20190208A. Given the dispersion measure of the FRB ($\sim580$ pc cm$^{-3}$), even the most conservative redshift estimate ($z_{\mathrm{max}}\sim0.83$) implies that this is the lowest-luminosity FRB host to date ($\lesssim10^8L_{\odot}$), even less luminous than the dwarf host of FRB 20121102A. We investigate how localization precision and the depth of optical imaging affect host association, and discuss the implications of such a low-luminosity dwarf galaxy. Unlike the other repeaters with low-luminosity hosts, FRB 20190208A has a modest Faraday rotation measure of a few tens of rad m$^{-2}$, and EVN plus VLA observations reveal no associated compact persistent radio source. We also monitored FRB 20190208A for 40.4 hours over 2 years as part of the \'ECLAT repeating FRB monitoring campaign on the Nan\c{c}ay Radio Telescope, and detected one burst. Our results demonstrate that, in some cases, the robust association of an FRB with a host galaxy will require both high localization precision, as well as deep optical follow-up., Comment: submitted to ApJL

The quest for radio signals from technologically-advanced extraterrestrial intelligence has traditionally concentrated on the vicinity of 1.4 GHz. In this paper, we extend the search to unprecedented territories, detailing our extensive observations at 6 GHz and initiating the first-ever survey at 18 GHz with the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT). Our strategy entailed rigorous observation sessions, totaling 36 hours, directed towards the Galactic Center and 72 selected TESS targets-making this the most comprehensive high-frequency technosignature search to date. Our narrowband signal search found no definitive evidence of drifting signals that could suggest an extraterrestrial origin from the surveyed regions. Nevertheless, our efforts have enabled us to set new constraints on the presence of radio emissions from approximately $5\times 10^{5}$ stars, establishing an isotropic radiated power limit of $1.8\times 10^{19} W$. We also provide a comparative analysis of the 'hits' recorded across both frequencies to highlight the significance of pursuing technosignature searches at higher frequencies, where the spectral landscape is less congested and more conducive to detection., Comment: Submitted to Acta Astronautica

We present very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of the hyperactive repeating FRB 20220912A using the European VLBI Network (EVN) with an EVN-Lite setup. We detected 150 bursts from FRB 20220912A over two observing epochs in October 2022. Combining the data of these bursts allows us to localise FRB 20220912A to a precision of a few milliarcseconds, corresponding to a transverse scale of less than 10 pc at the distance of the source. The precision of this localisation shows that FRB 20220912A lies closer to the centre of its host galaxy than previously found, although still significantly offset from the host galaxy's nucleus. On arcsecond scales, FRB 20220912A is coincident with a persistent continuum radio source known from archival observations, however, we find no compact persistent emission on milliarcsecond scales. The persistent radio emission is thus likely to be from star-formation in the host galaxy. Precision timing of millisecond pulsars in binary systems enables observers to detect the relativistic Shapiro delay induced by space time curvature. When favourably aligned, this enables constraints to be placed on the component masses and system orientation. Here we present the results of timing campaigns on seven binary millisecond pulsars observed with the 64-antenna MeerKAT radio telescope that show evidence of Shapiro delay: PSRs~J0101$-$6422, J1101$-$6424, J1125$-$6014, J1514$-$4946, J1614$-$2230, J1732$-$5049, and J1909$-$3744. Evidence for Shapiro delay was found in all of the systems, and for three the orientations and data quality enabled strong constraints on their orbital inclinations and component masses. For PSRs~J1125$-$6014, J1614$-$2230 and J1909$-$3744, we determined pulsar masses to be $M_{\rm p} = 1.68\pm 0.17 \, {\rm M_{\odot}} $, $1.94\pm 0.03 \, {\rm M_{\odot}} $ and $1.45 \pm 0.03 \, {\rm M_{\odot}}$, and companion masses to be $M_{\rm c} = 0.33\pm 0.02 \, {\rm M_{\odot}} $, $0.495\pm 0.005 \, {\rm M_{\odot}} $ and $0.205 \pm 0.003 \, {\rm M_{\odot}}$, respectively. This provides the first independent confirmation of PSR~J1614$-$2230's mass, one of the highest known. The Shapiro delays measured for PSRs~J0101$-$6422, J1101$-$6424, J1514$-$4946, and J1732$-$5049 were only weak, and could not provide interesting component mass limits. Despite a large number of millisecond pulsars being routinely timed, relatively few have accurate masses via Shapiro delays. We use simulations to show that this is expected, and provide a formula for observers to assess how accurately a pulsar mass can be determined. Pulsars are neutron stars, stellar corpses left over after supernova explosions of stars about ten times as massive as our Sun, with densities comparable to the atomic nucleus', spinning with periods from few milliseconds up to few seconds, and endowed with magnetic fields thousands billion times stronger than the Earth's, where particles are accelerated to the relativistic regime producing electromagnetic radiation across the entire spectrum. Although there is a general consensus on the fact that pulsars' radio emission is coherent in nature, whereas the emission from the optical to high-energy $\gamma$-rays is due to incoherent processes, it has not been established yet at which wavelengths the transition occurs, a key information for all emission models of pulsar magnetospheres. Of course, to address this issue covering the spectral region between high-frequency radio waves and the mid-IR is crucial. We used the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) to observe the Vela pulsar (PSR\, B0833$-$45), one of the very few observed in radio and from the mid-infrared up to the very high-energy $\gamma$-rays. We detected Vela at frequencies of 97.5, 145, 233, 343.5 GHz and found that its energy density spectrum follows a power-law of spectral index $\alpha = -0.93 \pm 0.16$. The ALMA spectrum corresponds to very high brightness temperatures - from $10^{17}$ to $10^{15}$ K - suggesting that a coherent radiative process still contributes to the mm/sub-mm emission. This is, therefore, the first indication of coherent emission other than radio originating in pulsars. At the same time, we identified an extended structure, preliminarily detected in ground-based observations. The European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) is a multi-institutional, multi-telescope collaboration, with the goal of using high-precision pulsar timing to directly detect gravitational waves. In this article we discuss the EPTA member telescopes, current achieved timing precision, and near-future goals. We report a preliminary upper limit to the amplitude of a gravitational wave background. We also discuss the Large European Array for Pulsars, in which the five major European telescopes involved in pulsar timing will be combined to provide a coherent array that will give similar sensitivity to the Arecibo radio telescope, and larger sky coverage., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, Amaldi 8 conference proceedings, accepted for publication by Classical & Quantum Gravity
