Abstract

We present detailed data on the feeding patterns of the Neotropical cichlid Australoheros acaroides (Hensel, 1870) in southern Brazil, focusing on three questions: (i) do feeding patterns vary according to the season or body size class of the species? (ii) are the niche breadth and intraspecific trophic overlap influenced by the season or the body size class? and (iii) how do feeding strategies and the fractional trophic level vary among seasons and body size classes? We analyzed 88 individuals and identified 27 different types of food item. A PERMANOVA identified significant variation in the composition of the diet among the seasons and body size classes. We detected a relatively narrow trophic niche, and a feeding strategy that varied in the relative use of resources among seasons and body size classes. Trophic overlap was relatively discreet among seasons and body size classes, however, and there was also little variation in the fractional trophic position of the species among seasons or size classes. These findings provide important insights into different aspects of the trophic relationships of A. acaroides in the subtropical region of southern Brazil, and resolve an important knowledge gap in its feeding ecology. Abstract

Fish farming is increasingly important globally and nationally, playing a crucial role in fish production for human consumption. Monitoring microbiological and chemical contaminants from water discharge is essential to mitigate the risk of contaminating water and fish for human consumption. This study analyzes the physicochemical and E. coli parameters of water and tambacu fish muscles (Colossoma macropomum × Piaractus mesopotamicus) in Western Maranhão, Brazil. It also includes a qualitative characterization of zooplankton in the ponds. Samples were collected from tambacu ponds in a dam system fed by natural watercourses from the Tocantins River tributaries, located at the connection of the Brazilian savanna and Amazon biomes. The physicochemical and E. coli parameters of water did not meet national standards. The zooplankton community included Rotifera, Cladocera, Copepoda, and Protozoa representatives, with no prior studies on zooplankton in the region, making these findings unprecedented. The biological quality of freshwater is crucial in fish farming, as poor quality can lead to decreased productivity and fish mortality, raising significant food safety concerns. The water quality studied is related to the potential influence of untreated wastewater as a source of contamination, leaving the studied region still far from safe water reuse practices. The findings on chemical and E. coli contamination of fish farming waters concern human health and emphasize the need for appropriate regulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present an analysis of the possibilities of the librarian profession with researchers for efficient management of scientific data. The result obtained through a survey of tools and currently available management techniques, demonstrates an analytical framework of support actions that librarians can provide for the development of a project on the life cycle of scientific data. It is concluded that the scientific data management requires planning solutions that include specific knowledge about the repository choice and storage techniques for the conservation and the permanent use of the data as a key to the success of a research project.

Abstract

RESUMEN La dieta de las tortugas de agua dulce Acanthochelys spixii y Hydromedusa tectifera es poco conocida en el extremo sur del Brasil. En este contexto se examinó el tracto digestivo de 21 individuos de A. spixii y 20 de H. tectifera provenientes de cuatro municipios del estado de Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Los ítems consumidos fueron identificados al nivel taxonómico más bajo posible, cuantificados y conservados en etanol de 70 °GL. Se obtuvieron las variables frecuencia de ocurrencia (F %) y el volumen porcentual (V %) de cada categoría de presa y se calculó el índice de importancia alimentaria (IAi %). Se analizó la amplitud del nicho trófico y la estrategia de alimentación de ambas especies. Las dietas se compararon usando la prueba de Mann-Whitney (P < 0,05). Ambas especies presentaron una estrategia de alimentación generalista, consumiendo principalmente insectos Hemiptera, Odonata, Coleoptera y Diptera. No hubo diferencias significativas en el volumen de ítems consumidos por ambas especies (Mann-Whitney, z = -0,387, P = 0,69). En relación con la amplitud de nicho trófico observamos valores bajos para ambas especies, 0,41 en A. spixii y 0,39 en H. tectifera, lo que sugiere una dieta más restringida con uniformidad en el consumo de alimentos, sin embargo, resaltamos que una dieta más restringida no sugiere una especialización trófica, ya que la disponibilidad de los elementos alimenticios tiene variación en el tiempo y el espacio. El estudio aportó información sobre la dieta de las especies de la región, generando datos que pueden utilizarse en programas de conservación de las especies y sus hábitats. Abstract

We investigated the diversity of testate amoebae in an urban stream located within the Igarapé Sao Francisco Environmental ProtectionArea in Acre, northern Brazil, during the dry season, and evaluated the factors mediating the structure of this protist community. We collected 108 water samples for the analysis of the testate amoeba community and the limnological variables at six sampling points on the stream, between July and September 2018. We used a RedundancyAnalysis (RDA) to verify the influence of environmental variables on the protist community. We recorded 76 species of testate amoebae from eight families, with most records from the families Difflugiidae, Arcellidae, Centropydae and Netzeliidae. More than half (49) of the species were recorded in Acre for the first time. The abundance of the amoebae of the family Trigonopiridae was regulated by the dissolved oxygen concentrations and the pH, while that of the Netzeliidae, Dif-Augiidae and Lesquereusidae was influenced by the pH, chloride concentrations, and the depth and transparency of the water. In the case of the family Arcellidae, abundance was determined by the turbidity and transparency of the water and the nitrate concentrations, while that of Centropyxis sp. was associated with the concentrations of Aiermotolerant coliforms. These findings indicate that, while the Sao Francisco stream is subject to anthropogenic impacts, it still presents adequate conditions for these organisms in some of its stretches. The abundance of these amoebae was influenced primarily by the productivity of the system, as indicated by the high protist densities recorded in the areas in which primary productivity was highest. These findings support the nse of these protists in studies that investigate the most appropriate indicator organisms that respond to anthropogenic impacts and shifts in environmental quality. The results of the present study demonstrated the importance of this aquatic ecosystem for the biodiversity of the study area, and the need to further expand our knowledge on the adaptations and interactions of the aquatic communities of the Amazon region. Abstract

The present study assembles elements that constitute a graphical visualization of the academic production of the Course Completion Works (TCC) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and the Postgraduate Program in Communication Theses and Dissertations. and Information (PPGCOM), whose advisors are linked to the Department of Information Science (DCI) of UFRGS. By analyzing associated keywords, it identifies the relevance of the topics addressed in the research of both courses, through the visualization of the undergraduate and graduate academic production. Through data collection using the WebScraper tool, the results indicated the preponderance of studies related to library typologies in undergraduate studies and studies about metric studies in postgraduate studies. It concludes that there is a tendency for research focused on the metrics of scientific communication and the use of technology as a facilitator of informational flows in relation to professional practice and library typologies. O presente estudo reúne elementos que constituem uma representação visual dos Trabalhos de Conclusão de Curso (TCC) de Biblioteconomia da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) e das Teses e Dissertações do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Comunicação e Informação (PPGCOM), cujos orientadores são ligados ao Departamento de Ciência da Informação (DCI) da UFRGS. Por meio das palavras-chave que caracterizam os trabalhos analisados, identifica a relevância dos temas tratados nas pesquisas de ambos os cursos, representando-os por meio de visualização da produção acadêmica da graduação e pós-graduação. Mediante coleta dos dados com o uso da ferramenta WebScraper, os resultados indicaram a preponderância de estudos relativos às tipologias de bibliotecas na graduação e de trabalhos acerca dos estudos métricos na pós-graduação. Conclui que há uma tendência de pesquisas voltadas às métricas da comunicação científica e o uso da tecnologia como facilitadora dos fluxos informacionais em relação à prática profissional e às tipologias de bibliotecas.

Com o uso das palavras-chave que caracterizam os trabalhos analisados, identificou-se os temas mais abordados nas pesquisas de ambos os cursos, sendo estes representados graficamente de modo a destacar a produção acadêmica da graduação e da pós-graduação. Abstract

Industrial production – the automatic cutting and bending – of rebar for reinforced concrete structures represents an improvement when compared to the traditional production method, wherein reinforcing bars were processed at the construction site. Nevertheless, the efficiency of this process requires synergy among supply chain stakeholders. Problems related to the poor reliability of rebar's detailing drawings and orders affect the industrialized process efficiency. The design information is usually provided through paper-based documents and must be transcribed manually by the manufacturer before fabrication. Notwithstanding, some solutions that enable digital exchange and data reuse of the reinforcement by the fabricator are available. Besides, it is considered that BIM potentially contributes to mitigating problems related to the design quality. In this paper, the digital design-fabrication interface of cut and bent rebar is analyzed, alongside with the use of the BIM in the reinforcing detailing. Through a survey with rebar's fabricators and BIM software providers, the main standards used in the rebar data exchange and the BIM authoring tools that support this feature were identified. It was found that despite the rebar cutting and bending equipment, production planning management systems and BIM tools already support the rebar digital fabrication, this practice is still not established by the Brazilian market leading to the occurrence of automation islands linked by manual data transfer. Entretanto, a eficiência desse processo demanda sinergia entre os agentes que atuam em sua cadeia produtiva. Problemas relacionados à qualidade do Projeto de Detalhamento de Armadura (PDA) e imprecisão nos pedidos podem comprometer a confiabilidade do processo industrializado. As informações contidas no PDA, usualmente fornecidas por meio de documentos impressos, precisam ser transcritas manualmente pelo fabricante antes do início da produção. Não obstante, encontram-se disponíveis soluções que viabilizam a transferência digital dos dados contidos no PDA e o reuso dessas informações na etapa de fabricação. Ademais, acredita-se que o emprego do processo BIM na elaboração dos projetos contribua para mitigar os problemas relacionados à qualidade do PDA. Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar a interface digital entre o projeto e a produção industrial de aço cortado e dobrado e o uso do processo BIM no desenvolvimento do PDA. Mediante consulta a prestadoras de serviço de corte e dobra e representantes de software BIM, foram identificados os principais padrões utilizados no intercâmbio de dados e ferramentas de autoria BIM que suportam sua exportação. Identificou-se que, apesar dos equipamentos, sistemas de gestão utilizados pelas centrais de corte e dobra e ferramentas BIM possuírem suporte à interface digital, esta prática ainda não é adotada pelo mercado brasileiro, caracterizando-se por ilhas de automação ligadas por transferência manual de dados.

Abstract

Despite increasing efforts in recent years to catalog the fish diversity of Amazonian rivers, many regions are still under-sampled, and sandy beach environments are particularly poorly understood. The present study focused on a 300 km stretch of the Acre river, in the southwestern Amazon basin, where we sampled 30 sandy beaches separated by a mean interval of 10 km. We collected 15,329 fish representing 80 species, 26 families, and nine orders. The Characiformes were the most abundant order, providing 88.24% of the individuals collected, followed by the Siluriformes, with 10.03%, while the Siluriformes had the highest species richness, with 37 species (45.0%), followed by the Characiformes, with 30 (37.5%). The most abundant species were the characiforms Knodus orteguasae and Creagruto barrigai. Reliable data on a region's biota is fundamental for the evaluation of patterns of biodiversity, and the occurrence and management of threatened species. As fish are directly affected by pollutants and the degradation of aquatic environments, further research in areas that are still poorly sampled will be essential for the elaboration of effective conservation strategies.
