MORFEO has officially passed the Preliminary Design Review and it is entering the final design phase. We present the current status of the project, with a focus on the adaptive optics system aspects and expected milestones during the next project phase.

Abstract: A near-IR high-resolution, R=80000 spectrometer has been developed at IPAG to directly characterize the atmosphere of exoplanets using adaptive optics (AO) assisted telescopes, and a single-mode fiber-injection unit. A first technical test with the 200' Hale telescope at Palomar Observatory occurred in March 2022 using the PALM3000 AO system offered by this telescope. Observations have also been made at the same time with the PARVI spectrometer so that a direct comparison can be made between the two instruments. This spectrometer uses a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA) instead of an echelle grating, resulting in a very compact optical layout that fits in a 0.25m3 cryostat. Using a quarter of an H2RG detector, the spectrometer analyses the middle part of the H-band, from 1.57 to 1.7 microns for 2 sources whose light is transferred from the telescope to the spectrometer using single-mode fibers. By design, the transmission of the spectrometer is expected to be 40-50%, which is 2-3 times higher than the transmission of current high-resolution spectrometers such as CRIRES+ and NIRSPEC. A damaged cross-disperser limited it to 21%, however. A replacement grating with a correct, twice as high efficiency has been procured after the on-sky demonstration. In addition to recalling the main specifications of the VIPA spectrometer, this paper presents the control software, the calibration process, and the reduction pipeline that have been developed for the instrument. It also presents the results of the on-sky technical test with the Hale telescope, as well as measurements of the effective resolution and transmission, along with a comparison of a spectrum of the sun obtained with the spectrometer with the BASS2000 reference spectrum. Planned modifications are also discussed. That includes the integration of a new dedicated H2RG detector, and of K-band optics.

3. The crossed-sine wavefront sensor: first tests and results

Abstract: The crossed-sine wavefront sensor (WFS) is a pupil plane wavefront sensor that measures the first derivatives of the wavefront. It is made by three main components: a gradient transmission filter (GTF) built from a product of sine functions rotated by 45 degrees around the optical axis, a 2x2 mini-lens array (MLA) at the focus of the tested optical system and a detector array located on a plane conjugated to the pupil. The basic principle consists in acquiring four pupil images simultaneously, each image being observed from different points located behind the GTF. After the simulation work which demonstrated the wavefront reconstruction capability, we are now in the phase of implementation of the prototype in the lab. The crossed-sine WFS could achieve a simultaneous high spatial resolution at the pupil of the tested optics and absolute measurement accuracy comparable to that attained by laser-interferometers. Abstract: HARMONI is the first light visible and near-IR integral field spectrograph for the ELT covering a large spectral range from 450nm to 2450nm with resolving powers from 3500 to 18000 and spatial sampling from 60mas to 4mas. It can operate in two Adaptive Optics modes-SCAO and LTAO-or with no AO. The project is preparing for Final Design Reviews. The laser Tomographic AO (LTAO) system provides AO correction with very high sky-coverage thanks to two systems: the Laser Guide Star Sensors (LGSS) and the Natural Guide Star Sensors (NGSS). LGSS is dedicated to the analysis of the wavefront coming from 6 laser guide stars created by the ELT. It is made of 6 independent wavefront sensor (WFS) modules mounted on a rotator of 600mm diameter to stabilise the pupil onto the microlens array in front of the detector. The optical design accepts elongated spots of up to 16 arcsec with no truncation using a CMOS detector from SONY. We will present the final optical and mechanical design of the LGSS based on freeform lenses to minimize the numbers of optical components and to accommodate for the diversity of sodium layer configurations. We will focus on rotator design, illustrating how we will move 1 tons with 90" accuracy in restrictive environment. Finally, we will present the strategy to verify the system in HARMONI context. The main challenge for the verification being how to test an AO system without access to the deformable mirror, part of the ELT.

Abstract: AMICal sat, a dedicated 2U cubesat, has been developed, in order to monitor the auroral emissions, with a dedicated imager. It aims to help to reconstruct the low energy electrons fluxes up to 30 keV in Earth auroral regions. It includes an imager entirely designed in Grenoble University Space Center. The imager uses a 1.3 Mpixels sparse RGB CMOS detector and a wide field objective (f=22.5 mm). The satellite platform has been built by the polish company Satrevolution. Launched September, 3rd, 2020 from Kuru (French Guyana) on board the Vega flight 16, it produces its first images in October 2020. The aim of this paper is to describe the design of the payload especially the optics and the proximity electronics, to describe the use of the payload for space weather purpose. A preliminary analysis of a first image showing the relevance of such an instrument for auroral monitoring is performed. 6. Experimental test of a 40 cm-long R=100 000 spectrometer for exoplanet characterisation

Abstract: High-resolution spectroscopy is a key element for present and future astronomical instrumentation. In particular, coupled to high contrast imagers and coronagraphs, high spectral resolution enables higher contrast and has been identified as a very powerful combination to characterise exoplanets, starting from giant planets now, up to Earth-like planet eventually for the future instruments. In this context, we propose the implementation of an innovative echelle spectrometer based on the use of VIPA (Virtually Imaged Phased Array, Shirasaki 1996). The VIPA itself is a particular kind of Fabry-Perot interferometer, used as an angular disperser with much greater dispersive power than common diffraction grating. The VIPA is an efficient, small component (3 cm x 2.4 cm), that takes the very advantage of single mode injection in a versatile design. The overall instrument presented here is a proof-of-concept of a compact, high-resolution (R > 80 000) spectrometer, dedicated to the H and K bands, in the context of the project High-Dispersion Coronagrahy developed at IPAG. The optical bench has a foot-print of 40 cm x 26 cm ; it is fed by two Single-Mode Fibers (SMF), one dedicated to the companion, and one to the star and/or to a calibration channel, and is cooled down to 80 K. This communication first presents the scientific and instrumental context of the project, and the principal merit of single-mode operations in high-resolution spectrometry. After recalling the physical structure of the VIPA and its implementation in an echelle-spectrometer design, it then details the optical design of the spectrometer. In conclusion, further steps (integration, calibration, coupling with adaptive optics) and possible optimization are briefly presented. Abstract: International audience; Amongst the SAM suite of instruments, SAM-GC (Gas Chromatograph) is devoted to identify and quantify volatiles evolved from the thermal/chemical treatment of any soil sample collected by the Curiosity rover. The first soil samples analyzed with SAM were composed of windblown dust and sand collected at the Rocknest site, while the second site analyzed was a basin called “Yellowknife Bay” where two holes were drilled (John Klein & Cumberland) and analysis showed these sites to be a fluvio-lacustrine sediment.. For their analysis, these samples were subjected to a pyrolysis at temperatures reaching about 850°C. For SAM-GC and GCMS analyses, different fractions of pyrolysates were collected at different temperature in the ambient-900°C range in order to discriminate potential different volatile fractions present in the solid sample. With the aim to search for potential organic molecules outgassed from the samples, a SAM-GC analytical channel composed of a thermal-desorption injector and a MXT-CLP chromatographic column was used as it was designed for the separation of a wide range of volatile organic molecules. This channel is also equipped with a thermal conductivity detector (TCD) capable to detect the most abundant species (with abundances down to approximately 10-10mol). His channel is thus complementary to the mass spectrometer detection for quantification of such species, as this last instrument does not have linear response in this domain of high abundance, whereas it is significantly more sensitive than the TCD. The results obtained with this instrument first show that the performances of SAM-GC is representative of those obtained during calibrations of the instrument in laboratory, and also that results are repeatable. Hence, the instrument performs nominally, making it the first GCMS running successfully on Mars since the Viking missions (middle of the 70’s). Moreover, the complementarity of GC towards MS is also shown, both by allowing the quantification of the major species detected (as water), and by providing a chromatographic signal, that is well resolved temporally which can be used to improve the QMS signal treatment. In the frame of research of organics, the SAM-GC analyses contribute to the identification of several compounds even at trace levels, giving clues on the chemical content of both loose surface and rock materials. These detections are of course linked to the question of preservation and evolution of organic material in the Mars environment, and this will be discussed in further details.

Abstract: International audience; A new reactor, named APSIS for Atmospheric Photochemistry SImulated by Synchrotron, is designed for simulating the reactivity occurring in planetary upper atmospheres. In this reactor, a gas mixture roughly reproducing the main Titan's atmosphere composition (N2/CH4 = 90/10) is irradiated by a continuous-spectrum in the 60−350 nm range, provided by the DISCO beamline at SOLEIL synchrotron radiation facility. This spectral range enables the dissociation and ionization of N2 and CH4, as observed in plasma reactors and Titan's ionosphere. The neutral products are detected in situ by quadrupole mass spectrometry, and collected with a cryogenic trap for ex-situ analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The detected reaction products include C2, C3, C4 and probably C5 organic compounds, with important amounts of nitrogen-bearing species: HCN, CH3CN and C2N2. Neutral mass spectra obtained with APSIS are compared with INMS experiments of the Cassini space probe in the upper Titan atmosphere and with other results of current Titan atmosphere chemistry laboratory simulations.

Abstract: OCARINA (Ocean Coupled with Atmosphere : Recherche Instrumentale sur Navire Annexe) is a small moving platform deployed from a research vessel. Turbulent fluxes, radiation fluxes, and wave state can all be derived from the instruments embedded on OCARINA, which include a sonic anemometer, an inertial platform, a CT probe, and other sensors. OCARINA was recently deployed during the FROMVAR experiment in Mer d'Iroise. It was successfully operated in winds up to 12 m/s and waves up to 4 m. The platform and datasets will be presented. Turbulent fluxes estimated with OCARINA data will be compared to data collected on the host vessel.

Abstract: EPSC-DPS2011-161; In this work we present the first experimental spectra of Tholins in the far and mid infrared range. Tholins have been produced with the PAMPRE experimental setup. The spectra have been measured at the French SOLEIL synchrotron facility. Results are compared to absorbance spectra derived from existing models and Cassini CIRS observations.

Abstract: EGU06-A-09225; The Titan's atmosphere contains aerosols produced by an organic chemistry induced by the photochemistry of N2 and CH4. These organic aerosols are important as: i) they have a significant influence on the properties of the atmosphere, linked to their optical properties; ii) they represent the best known example of transition from the gaseous to the solid phase by chemical processes; iii) they represent the most complex organics produced in Titan's atmosphere, making them particularly interesting from the astrobiological point of view. In order to contribute to the understanding of the formation of Titan's aerosols, we use a low pressure Radio Frequency (RF) plasma discharge. In RF plasma solid particles are produced into the gas, without wall effect, because they are maintained in levitation in the reactive medium by electrostatic forces. This type of discharge is used in the field of “dusty plasmas”. In our experiment, the RF discharge works in a N2-CH4 gas mixture in order to produce “tholins”, i.e. analogues of Titan's solid aerosols. The CH4 percentage is changed from 0% to 10% by adjusting gas flow a pure N2 and premixed N2 + 10% CH4. In order to study the influence of the plasma on the physical properties and chemical composition of the produced tholins plasmas parameter like total gas flow rate, total gas pressure and absorbed RF power are changed. The morphology of the produced tholins is observed by scanning electronic microscopy. The tholins are quasi spherical and their size and dispersion are studied as a function of the plasma conditions. The correlations between the plasma parameters and the particles shape are presented. Some samples are observed by laser light diffusion in order to study the evolution of the polarimetric phase curve at two wavelengths: 543.5 nm and 633 nm. A difference is pointed out for tholins produced in plasmas with 2% and 10% of CH4. The tholin's refractive index is measured for the same samples produced with 2% and 10% of CH4. IR absorption is used to identify the bounding in the tholins. We observe that an increase from 2% to 10% of CH4 induce significantly the C-H bounding. We also study of the elemental composition of the produced tholins when the CH4 percentage is changed from 1% to 10%, and we measure the relative concentration of C, N and H. The measured ratio C/H and C/N are compared with results of tholins obtained by plasma devices used by other teams. With the relatively extended variation of physical and chemical properties of the produced tholins, we can create a data bank. These data can be used as a reference to treat and interpret the information collected from the Cassini-Huygens space mission and observations of the Titan's atmosphere. We hope that the correlation between the gas phase properties and solid particles properties could be transposed to the Titan's atmosphere case to retrieve the processes of formation of the Titan's aerosols.
