15. Matched Filter Based on the Radiative Transfer Model for CO2 Estimation From PRISMA Hyperspectral Data

Abstract

The rapid growth of hyperspectral satellite missions and the subsequent availability of hyperspectral images have encouraged the remote sensing community to investigate their potential in estimating the concentration of gases, such as methane (CH $_{ \boldsymbol {4}}$ ) and carbon dioxide (CO $_{ \boldsymbol {2}}$ ), which are related to the greenhouse effect. Though satellite hyperspectral sensors are not specifically designed for this purpose, they are expected to complement more specific satellite missions, such as NASA’s Orbiting Carbon Observatory -2 and -3 (OCO-2 and OCO-3), both in terms of enriched temporal sampling and improved spatial resolution. In this work, we present a new method to estimate the column-averaged dry-air mole fraction of CO $_{ \boldsymbol {2}}$ from hyperspectral data on a per-pixel basis. The method, which is here tailored to PRISMA images, leverages the spectral radiance samples collected in the short-wave InfraRed (SWIR) spectral region around the CO $_{ \boldsymbol {2}}$ absorption band at 2000 nm. By assuming a linear model to describe the dependence of the observed radiance on the CO $_{ \boldsymbol {2}}$ concentration, the estimation problem is reduced to matched filtering and can be effectively implemented in compliance with the low computational burden required to perform a pixel-by-pixel analysis. The performance of the presented method is investigated by means of a rigorous, physically based simulator that accurately reproduces the at-sensor radiance allowing one to check the validity of the assumptions and to assess the algorithm accuracy. The results show that the presented algorithm outperforms a benchmark continuum interpolated band ratio (CIBR)-based approach, which has been proposed in the literature to get fast per-pixel estimates of CO $_{ \boldsymbol {2}}$ concentration.

Abstract

Infrared search and track (IRST) systems based on 3-D velocity filters are quite sensitive to the random motion that remains after egomotion compensation has occurred (jitter). These systems are designed to detect small targets at long range and they often employ track-before-detect (TBD) strategies to integrate the target signal ahmg consecutive frames. Jitter causes frame misalignment and leads to a reduction of the detection performance. We analyze the effects of jitter on the false alarm and detection probabilities and on the detection range. The analytical expressions here derived are a valuable tool both in the analysis and synthesis of IRST systems based on 3-D velocity filters.

Abstract

The aim of this paper was to survey the current management of the problem of smoking in our Mental Health Units, the structural characteristics of the units and how a total smoking ban would be perceived by doctors and nurses.An 18 items survey about smoking habits of inpatients and department inner regulations was sent to the Head Physician and the Charge Nurse of all the Intensive Psychiatric Care General Hospital Units in Italy (228 units), in order to increase the answer rate and to investigate if the perception of the problem is eventually different between the two groups.We collected 65 answers from Head Physician and 79 from Nurses. Both groups think that the smoking rates for inpatients are between 50-100%. Most of the units is locked, with or without an external space, so that a total smoking ban is considered difficult to achieve by both groups. A very high rate of units has no specific rooms for smokers. In most cases the issue management is solved by a self-regulation, based on collecting cigarettes and lighters and granting a limited number of cigarettes per day. Anyway, an institutional intervention would be appreciated especially by nurses, who seem to be even more involved in the issue management and both of groups seem to badly judge the lack of sources to face the eventual ban: particularly the possibility to offer nicotine replacement therapy, a cognitive-behavioural support and providing more staff education would all be considered useful to implement the success rate of the ban. By the way, both of groups seem skeptical about the possibility of a total smoking-free policy in Acute Psychiatric Hospital Units. Though, a difference in the problem’s perception between the two groups has been noticed.Smoking cessation remains a neglected area in psychiatry, in part due to misconceptions about smoking in the mentally ill, i.e. the idea that smoking cessation will exacerbate mental illness, aggression and suicide risk, even though these believes are not supported by evidence; in part due to the lack of institutional intervention and the structural deficiencies of the units.

27. The cost-utility of school-based first permanent molar sealants programs: a Markov model

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Evidence of the cost-effectiveness of school-based first permanent molar sealants programs is not yet fully conclusive. The aim of this study was to determine the incremental cost-utility ratio (ICUR) of school-based prevention programs for the application of sealants in molars of schoolchildren compared with non-intervention. METHODS: A cost-utility analysis based on a Markov model was carried out using probability distribution. The utility was measured in quality-adjusted tooth years (QATY). The assessment was carried out from the public payer's perspective with a six-year time horizon. Costs and benefits were discounted at 3% per year. Only direct costs were evaluated, expressed in Chilean pesos (CLP) at 7th May at 2019 values (exchange rate USD = CLP 681.09). Univariate deterministic sensitivity analysis and probabilistic analysis were carried out. RESULTS: After a six-year follow up, the cost of sealing all first permanent molars was found to be higher than non-intervention, with a mean cost difference of USD 1.28 (CLP 875) per molar treated. The "seal all" strategy was more effective than non-intervention, generating 0.2 quality-adjusted tooth years more than non-intervention. The ICUR of the "seal all" strategy compared to non-intervention was USD 6.48 (CLP 4,412) per quality-adjusted tooth years. The sensitivity analysis showed that the increase in caries was the variable which most influenced the ICUR. CONCLUSIONS: A school-based sealant program is a cost-effective measure in populations with a high prevalence of caries.

Abstract

We investigate the statistical modeling of hyper-spectral data. The accurate modeling of experimental data is critical in target detection and classification applications. In fact, having a statistical model that is capable of properly describing data variability leads to the derivation of the best decision strategies together with a reliable assessment of algorithm performance. Most existing classification and target detection algorithms are based on the multivariate Gaussian model which, in many cases, deviates from the true statistical behavior of hyper-spectral data. This motivated us to investigate the capability of non-Gaussian models to represent data variability in each background class. In particular, we refer to models based on elliptically contoured (EC) distributions. We consider multivariate EC-t distribution and two distinct mixture models based on EC distributions. We describe the methodology adopted for the statistical analysis and we propose a technique to automatically estimate the unknown parameters of statistical models. Finally, we discuss the results obtained by analyzing data gathered by the multispectral infrared and visible imaging spectrometer (MIVIS) sensor.

Abstract

Detecting and recognizing underwater objects is a topic of great interest in many maritime applications, such as harbor security, safe navigation of autonomous underwater vehicles, and safety of the littoral zone [1]. Fluorescence Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) systems play an important role in this context. In this work, a framework for predicting the performance of underwater object recognition by means of fluorescence LDAR is proposed with the aim of assisting the user during operations such as mission planning and LIDAR system design. Experimental results obtained within a Monte Carlo simulation framework reveal the potential of the proposed framework.

Abstract

Maximum likelihood (ML) algorithms and Cramer-Rao (CR) bounds for the location and scale parameters of the Gumbel distribution are discussed. First we consider the case in which the scale parameter is known, obtaining the estimator of the location parameter by solving the likelihood equation and then evaluating its performance. We next consider the case where both the location parameter and the scale parameter are unknown and need to be estimated simultaneously from the reference samples. For this case, performance is analyzed by means of Monte-Carlo simulation and compared with the asymptotic CR bound.

Il saggio prende in esame le social street - gruppi di vicini che si organizzano online attraverso Facebook e anche offline - come luoghi in cui si realizza l'inclusione sociale sui territori. Le social street sono una esperienza interessante e innovativa, capace di generare solidarietà di vicinato, (potenzialmente) di includere coloro che vivono nello stesso spazio fisico-urbano e che sempre più spesso hanno caratteristiche sociali, etniche, culturali, religiose diverse, ma non per questo inconciliabili.

Abstract

With targeted interventions, health status of frail older persons could be improved, yet many of these subjects remain undetected in the community. We aimed at validating a screening instrument to identify, in a primary care setting, older community-dwellers at an increased risk for death and hospitalization.The “Assistenza Socio-Sanitaria in Italia” (ASSI) project is a 2-phase prospective cohort study of older persons (65+ years), randomly selected from the lists of 98 general practitioners (GP) in Florence. At 2003 baseline, GP provided data on demographics and health status of 5,445 screenees, with a structured questionnaire that investigated the presence of: 1) need of help in performing Basic and 2) Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (BADL,IADL); 3) poor vision; 4) poor hearing; 5) weight loss; 6) use of homecare services; 7) self-perceived inadequacy of income. Two or more affirmative answers gave access to phase II of the study, based on personal interview. A record linkage procedure with Tuscany healthcare administrative databases allowed collection of follow-up data on mortality and hospitalizations through March, 2004. On a total of 6,590 person-years (p-y) of observations, 225 deaths were observed. Mortality was 2, 11, and 31 per 100 p-y in participants who scored 0-1, 2-3 and 4+ at the screening questionnaire, respectively (p<0.001). Compared with participants who scored 0-1, the hazard of death was 3.3 (95% CI 2.3-4.7) and 8.4 (5.7-12.3) in those who scored 2-3 and 4+ in age-, sex-, and place of residence adjusted Cox’s survival analysis, respectively. Through the end of the follow-up, 949 (17.6%) participants had been hospitalized, 15.4% of those who screened negative and 35.4% of those who screened positive (p<0.001); in the latter, the adjusted HR (95% CI) for hospitalization was 2.8 (2.1-3.7).
