Over the last decades, drinking water and energy use have increased exponentially. To preserve ecosystems in the long term, a change in behavior is necessary on all levels of society including on the household level. This paper presents an integrated review of the determinants of long-term drinking water and energy conservation behavior of households. We identified forty-nine relevant studies discussing long-term conservation behavior in the context of drinking water and energy use. Long-term conservation behavior was measured as either persistent behavior, maintaining behavioral change, or intentions to maintain behavior, each with specific determinants. We found four key factors for long-term conservation behavior: consumption feedback, household characteristics, effort, and motives for conservation behavior. For future studies, we suggest follow-up questionnaires or interviews to measure the persistence of behavior and differentiate between curtailment and efficiency behavior. Worthwhile avenues for future research on long-term conservation behavior are household-tailored feedback mechanisms and the interaction between contextual factors and effort-based choices.

Inleiding: Dit onderzoek richt zich op het gebruik en de houding ten opzichte van digitale zorg onder mensen met een chronische aandoening. De gezondheidszorg staat voor steeds grotere uitdagingen door het stijgende aantal mensen met een chronische aandoening en de behoefte aan extra zorgpersoneel. Digitale zorg kan een oplossing bieden voor het personeelstekort. Daarom is het belangrijk om te begrijpen hoe mensen met een chronische aandoening digitale zorg gebruiken en hoe ze daar tegenover staan. Methode: Voor dit onderzoek is gebruik gemaakt van longitudinale data van het Nationaal Panel Chronisch zieken en Gehandicapten (NPCG) in de periode 2015-2023. De data is geanalyseerd om te kijken naar het gebruik en de houding ten opzichte van digitale zorg onder mensen met een chronische aandoening. Resultaten: Het gebruik van digitale zorg is hoger bij jongere mensen, mannen en hoger opgeleiden. Jongere mensen, mannen, hoger opgeleiden en mensen met een minder ernstige lichamelijke beperkingen hebben een meer positieve houding tegenover digitale zorg. Het aantal diagnoses heeft geen significante invloed op het gebruik en de houding ten opzichte van digitale zorg. Discussie: Een beperking van dit onderzoek is dat het gebruik van digitale zorg alleen is gemeten aan de hand van vragen over het patiëntportaal. Andere aspecten van digitale zorg, zoals online consulten zijn niet meegenomen in deze studie. Toekomstig onderzoek zou een breder scala aan digitale zorgmiddelen moeten omvatten om een completer beeld te krijgen van het gebruik en de houding ten opzichte van digitale zorg onder mensen met chronische aandoeningen. Beleidsadvies: Het is belangrijk dat beleidsmakers en zorgverleners rekening houden met demografische factoren bij het verbeteren van de digitale zorg onder mensen met een chronische aandoening. Educatieve programma's kunnen bijvoorbeeld worden ingezet om lager opgeleiden meer gebruik te laten maken van digitale zorg.

Deze thesis onderzoekt de invloed van emotionele ouderlijke betrokkenheid op problematisch schoolgedrag bij adolescenten en bekijkt of deze invloed verschilt tussen jongens en meisjes. Op basis van de Sociale Leertheorie, de Ecologische Systeemtheorie en de vier verschillende opvoedingsstijlen wordt ouderlijke betrokkenheid geanalyseerd met behulp van een steekproef van 3.649 Nederlandse adolescenten uit de "Youth in Europe Study" (YES!), onderdeel van het “Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Survey in Four European Countries” (CILS4EU) project. De eerste hypothese stelt dat hoge emotionele ouderlijke betrokkenheid samenhangt met minder problematisch schoolgedrag en een betere houding van adolescenten op school. De tweede hypothese verwacht dat deze invloed sterker is voor jongens dan voor meisjes. De resultaten tonen aan dat toegenomen emotionele ouderlijke betrokkenheid geassocieerd is met een vermindering van problematisch schoolgedrag bij adolescenten, wat de eerste hypothese bevestigt. Dit benadrukt het belang van een warme, ondersteunende en communicatieve opvoedingsstijl. Echter, de tweede hypothese wordt niet bevestigd; de invloed van ouderlijke betrokkenheid verschilt niet significant tussen jongens en meisjes. Dit suggereert dat andere factoren, zoals culturele en sociale invloeden, mogelijk een grotere rol spelen dan verwacht. Jongens vertonen meer problematisch gedrag, mogelijk door externe druk om hun genderidentiteit te bevestigen. Ook blijkt dat oudere adolescenten meer probleemgedrag vertonen, wat de noodzaak van vroege interventies met beschermende factoren benadrukt. De bevindingen onderstrepen ook de rol van gezinsstructuren en de kwaliteit van ouder-kindrelaties in het beïnvloeden van schoolgedrag. De bevindingen benadrukken de rol van ouderlijke betrokkenheid bij het bevorderen van positief schoolgedrag. Het onderzoek biedt beleidsmakers en professionals praktische aanbevelingen voor het verbeteren van ouderlijke betrokkenheid, nuttig voor alle

Dit onderzoek richt zich op de vraag of het hebben van een migratieachtergrond invloed heeft op de kans om discriminatie uit te spreken, en welke rol institutioneel vertrouwen hierin speelt. De focus ligt op studenten in Nederland. De bestaande literatuur over dit onderwerp suggereert dat voor studenten met een migratieachtergrond de kans om discriminatie uit te spreken kleiner is dan voor studenten zonder migratieachtergrond. Tevens laat eerder onderzoek zien dat meer vertrouwen in instituties, de kans om discriminatie uit te spreken mogelijk groter maakt voor studenten. In dit onderzoek wordt daarom verwacht dat studenten met een migratieachtergrond en kleinere kans hebben om ervaringen met discriminatie uit te spreken dan studenten zonder een migratieachtergrond, en dat het verschil in kans kleiner wordt naarmate studenten meer institutioneel vertrouwen hebben. Uit de logistische regressieanalyse blijkt dat het effect van migratieachtergrond niet significant is en dat dit effect niet gemodereerd wordt door institutioneel vertrouwen. In dit onderzoek is dus geen bewijs gevonden dat er een verschil is tussen studenten met een migratieachtergrond en studenten zonder een migratieachtergrond in de kans om discriminatie uit te spreken, en dit verschil in kans verandert niet naarmate studenten meer vertrouwen hebben in instituties.

Background: Digital loneliness interventions for older adults are promising, yet conclusive evidence is lacking due to a lack of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and difficulties with recruitment. Process evaluation of performed RCTs is essential to inform future interventions. Still, it is rarely carried out, resulting in an overly optimistic view of the impact of eHealth interventions on loneliness in older adults and options to conduct such research entirely remotely. Objective: We describe a mixed methods process evaluation of a digitally conducted RCT assessing the effectiveness of a mobile social gaming app to facilitate meaningful social interactions in older adults. Methods: We analyzed the questionnaire and game data of the RCT participants to evaluate recruitment and onboarding, intervention adherence, and intervention acceptability. The RCT participants were allocated either to the main group of older adults (aged 65 years or older) or the side group (aged between 18 and 64 years). The side group used networking to play with the older adults. We also conducted 6 post-RCT evaluation interviews and 1 focus group with a total of 4 RCT participants and 5 welfare organization representatives that aided in RCT recruitment. Results: In total, 371 people aged 18 years or older signed up for the RCT, of which 64% (238/371) were aged 65 years or older. Of the total sample, 20% (76/371) installed the app and signed informed consent, showing a large dropout during onboarding. The high number of questions was a relevant barrier for participants. Both questionnaire and gameplay adherence were low. Participants indicated that the games elicited contact and a feeling of togetherness and proposed challenging and competitive games with increasing difficulty levels. They suggested focusing on enjoying the games rather than administering questionnaires. Conclusions: Conducting a remote digital trial of a social gaming intervention for older adults is a great challenge.

Buyers in online markets pay higher prices to sellers who promise a high-quality product in auctions of used goods, even though they cannot assess quality until after the sale. The principal argument offered in prior work is that reputation systems render sellers’ ‘cheap talk’ credible by allowing buyers to publicly rate sellers’ past honesty and sellers to build a reputation for being honest. We test this argument using both observational data from online auctions on eBay and an internet experiment. Strikingly, in both studies we find that unverifiable promises are trusted by buyers regardless of seller reputation or the presence of a reputation system, and sellers mostly refuse to take advantage. We conclude that the prevailing conception of markets in economic sociology as made possible by opportunism-curtailing institutions is “undersocialized”: Reputation systems may be used to identify more reliable providers of a product, but that they would be needed to prevent otherwise rampant deceit relies on a cynical assumption about human behavior that is empirically untenable.

Is peer sanctioning a sustainable solution to the problem of human cooperation? We conducted an exact multilab replication ( N = 1,008; 7 labs × 12 groups × 12 participants) of an experiment by Gürerk, Irlenbusch, and Rockenbach published in Science in 2006 (Gürerk Ö, Irlenbusch B, Rockenbach B. The competitive advantage of sanctioning institutions. 2006. Science. 312(5770):108-111). In GIR2006 ( N = 84; 1 lab × 7 groups × 12 participants), groups that allowed members to reward cooperators and punish defectors were found to outgrow and outperform groups without a peer-sanctioning institution. We find GIR2006 replicated in accordance with all preregistered replication criteria in five of the seven labs we sampled. There, the majority of participants joined groups with a sanctioning institution, and participants cooperated and profited more on average than in groups without a sanctioning institution. In the two other labs, results were weaker but still favored sanctioning institutions. These findings establish the competitive advantage of sanctioning institutions as a robust phenomenon within the European context.

Online peer-to-peer markets decentralize the distribution of resources, creating a trust problem in economic exchange on the internet. Individual characteristics of trustees—as determinants for being trusted—are therefore increasingly important. In light of this societal development, this study investigates the role of socioeconomic status and reputation as drivers of interpersonal trust. Some have argued that lower status trustees are trusted more easily because over the life course, they repeatedly rely on others' resources. Others state that higher status trustees are perceived as being more trustworthy, because they are more vulnerable to social control and loss of reputation. We propose a novel, experimental method for examining interpersonal trust situations that resembles the reality of peer-to-peer market platforms. 626 subjects in an online experiment were asked to place trust in their preferable trustee based on the asking price, and seller characteristics. The results from conditional logistic regression models showed that status increases perceived trustworthiness and positively affects the trust premium for past trustworthy behavior. Strong reputation effects were found, sending out a warning for inequitable emergent inequality of trust through reputation cascading.

Age-related difficulties and quarantine restrictions impede the possibilities to maintain contact with one’s social network. Maintaining these contacts may be supported by digital games. To develop effective and feasible digital tools to foster social interaction, we aimed to explore what older adults find important in social contact and what barriers and enablers they foresee in digital gaming interventions as network support aids. Two focus groups and 20 semi-structured interviews (N = 29) with older adults (aged 55–87) were held to explore the research questions. Furthermore, a questionnaire was administered (N = 29) containing measures of loneliness, frailty, and social network size. Participants found ‘reciprocity’, ‘in-person contact’, and ‘personal connection’ important in contact with strong ties. Online games were not used much for socializing but may be used in the future, particularly by less mobile older adults. Future social gaming interventions should be challenging, user-friendly, and offer the possibility to communicate. Digital co-designed interventions that are feasible, challenging, intuitive, and trigger meaningful communication may strengthen social interactions in older adults. They may be a relevant social support tool in periods of interaction limitations due to functional impairment or social isolation.
