Abstract

Over the last years, automotive industries drove a great amount of research in the field of advanced combustion techniques minimizing carbon dioxide emissions. The so-called Low-Temperature Combustions (LTC), characterized by the self-ignition of highly premixed air-fuel mixtures, represent a promising solution to achieving high efficiency and ultralow emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter. Among these, gasoline Partially Premixed Combustion (PPC), obtained through the high-pressure direct injections of gasoline, showed a good potential for the simultaneous reduction of pollutants and emissions in compression ignited engines. However, when multiple injections per cycle are performed (with hydraulic-assisted needle opening), combustion stability might be compromised by the wave effects in the hydraulic system, which produce incoherence between the requested and injected fuel. This work presents a model-based pressure waves reconstruction strategy, based on a control-oriented model of the high-pressure common rail injection system fueled with gasoline. To determine the hydraulic system's behavior during the injection process, a specifically designed flushing bench with a high-frequency acquisition system has been developed. Experimental activities have been carried out to highlight fuel pressure fluctuations with single and double injection patterns. Through the analysis of the acquired data, the key parameters (characteristic of the system) have been identified and the accuracy of pressure waves reconstruction has been evaluated, always returning errors lower than 2% between measured and estimated instantaneous pressures. Different fuel types, injectors, and rail positions have been tested to highlight the robustness of the approach. Based on the instantaneous pressure trace estimated with the control-oriented model, a fuel quantity Fluctuation Correction Strategy (FQC), implementable on a standard engine Electronic Control Unit (ECU), has been developed. The obtained results confirm the potential to reduce fuel quantity oscillations in multiple-injections systems.

Abstract

During cancer treatments in childhood hematological malignancies, reduced exercise tolerance is one of the main hardships. Precision-based training programs help children, adolescents, and young adults and their families to resume regular physical activity, exercise, and sports once they return to their communities after the intensive phases spent in hospital. This study was aimed at verifying whether an intermittent recovery test, the Yo-Yo AD, could provide a simple and valid way to evaluate an individual’s capacity to perform repeated intense exercise and to follow up on the impact of tailored exercise in children, adolescents, and young adults with hematological malignancies. The Yo-Yo AD involved the repetition of several shuttles to muscle exhaustion, at pre-established speeds (walking and slow running). The heart rate (HR) and oxygen saturation (SaO2 ) were monitored during the test. The total distance and the walking/running ability, measured as the slope of the HR vs. distance correlation, were investigated before (T0) and after 11 weeks (T1) of precision exercise intervention. The Yo-Yo AD was also performed by healthy children (CTRL). Ninety-seven patients (10.58 ± 4.5 years, 46% female) were enrolled. The Yo-Yo AD showed the positive impact of the exercise intervention by increasing the distance covered by the individuals (T0 = 946.6 ± 438.2 vs. T1 = 1352.3 ± 600.6 m, p < 0.001) with a more efficient walking/running ability (T0 = 2.17 ± 0.84 vs. T1 = 1.73 ± 0.89 slope, p < 0.0164). CTRLs performed better (1754.0 ± 444.0 m, p = 0.010). They were equally skillful (1.71 ± 0.27 slope) when compared to the patients after they received the precision-based intervention. No adverse events occurred during the Yo-Yo AD and it proved to be an accurate way of correctly depicting the changes in performance in childhood hematological malignancies.

Abstract

A control-oriented model of a Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) was developed for real-time Hardware In the Loop (HIL) applications, to support model-based development of the DCT controller and to systematically test its performance. The model is an innovative attempt to reproduce the fast dynamics of the actuation system while maintaining a simulation step size large enough for real-time applications. The model comprehends a detailed physical description of hydraulic circuit, clutches, synchronizers and gears, and simplified vehicle and internal combustion engine sub-models. As the oil circulating in the system has a large bulk modulus, the pressure dynamics are very fast, possibly causing instability in a real-time simulation; the same challenge involves the servo valves dynamics, due to the very small masses of the moving elements. Therefore, the hydraulic circuit model has been modified and simplified without losing physical validity, in order to adapt it to the real-time simulation requirements. The results of offline simulations have been compared to on-board measurements to verify the validity of the developed model, which was then implemented in a HIL system and connected to the Transmission Control Unit (TCU). Several tests have been performed on the HIL simulator, to verify the TCU performance: electrical failure tests on sensors and actuators, hydraulic and mechanical failure tests on hydraulic valves, clutches and synchronizers, and application tests comprehending all the main features of the control actions performed by the TCU. Being based on physical laws, in every condition the model simulates a plausible reaction of the system. A test automation procedure has finally been developed to permit the execution of a pattern of tests without the interaction of the user; perfectly repeatable tests can be performed for non-regression verification, allowing the testing of new software releases in fully automatic mode.

Abstract

The acoustic design auditoria is founded on objective acoustic parameters determined on the basis of the computed or measured impulse response. Such objective parameters are related on the average response of the human ear to transient sounds, without considering the subjective perception of the individual, which, in turn, is related also to social and education aspects. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between individual sound perceptions and energy parameters. In detail, a questionnaire has been submitted to a sample of people listening to tracks of different musical genres. The questionnaire has been conceived to come up with a classification model for the audience allowing to express the listener's experience according to different indicators, such as overall acoustic quality and overall acoustic experience. Results of this experiment are analyzed by means of Random Forest non-parametric model belonging to the data mining algorithms. The final purpose of the study is to define which physical and acoustical characteristics are the most suitable to represent the subjective perceptions of the listeners

The Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WCQ) is used extensively in health research, but the measurement properties and suitability of the WCQ for people with Parkinson's disease (PD) have not been psychometrically assessed. If the WCQ does not align with its original 8-factor structure in a PD population, the use of the WCQ subscales may not be appropriate. The present study used confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and multiple-group EFA to determine the ideal factor structure of the WCQ in a PD sample. The original 8 factors of the WCQ were not reproduced. EFA revealed a 6-factor structure, including Distancing, Faith, Avoidance, Seeking Social Support, Planful Problem Solving, and Confrontive coping. As motor symptom severity may impact coping, the stability of the 6-factor structure was examined across motor symptom severity (mild and moderate), remaining consistent. Higher levels of overall motor severity were associated with increased use of faith and avoidance style coping. These findings suggest that the 6-factor structure of the WCQ may be more appropriate for assessing coping styles in PD.

24. The relationship between executive function and fine motor control in young and older adults

Abstract

The present study examined the relationship between executive function (EF) and fine motor control in young and older healthy adults. Participants completed 3 measures of executive function; a spatial working memory (SWM) task, the Stockings of Cambridge task (planning), and the Intra-Dimensional Extra-Dimensional Set-Shift task (set-shifting). Fine motor control was assessed using 3 subtests of the Purdue Pegboard (unimanual, bimanual, sequencing). For the younger adults, there were no significant correlations between measures of EF and fine motor control. For the older adults, all EFs significantly correlated with all measures of fine motor control. Three separate regressions examined whether planning, SWM and set-shifting independently predicted unimanual, bimanual, and sequencing scores for the older adults. Planning was the primary predictor of performance on all three Purdue subtests. A multiple-groups mediation model examined whether planning predicted fine motor control scores independent of participants' age, suggesting that preservation of planning ability may support fine motor control in older adults. Planning remained a significant predictor of unimanual performance in the older age group, but not bimanual or sequencing performance. The findings are discussed in terms of compensation theory, whereby planning is a key compensatory resource for fine motor control in older adults.

Background: The Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale 21 (DASS-21) is a frequently used measure of emotional disturbance symptoms in Parkinson s disease (PD). However, the factor structure of the DASS-21 in PD has yet to be explored. Objective: To assess whether the scale is measuring these symptoms in PD in the same way as the general population. Methods: The present study fit a series of established DASS-21 factor structures with both confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and exploratory structural equation modelling (ESEM) using data from 251 participants with PD. Results: The 3-factor ESEM provided the best fit. The depression and stress scales fit well, however, few items on the anxiety subscale loaded clearly, with several items significantly loading onto the depression or stress factors. Conclusions: Whilst the depression and stress subscales appear suitable in PD, poor loadings and internal consistency indicate the anxiety subscale may not accurately assess anxiety symptomology in PD. This may be due to the scale s reliance on physiological symptoms as indicators of anxiety, when many of these are present in PD. Thus, the anxiety subscale of the DASS-21 may not be a suitable measure of anxiety in PD.

26. A new inhibitor of the transcription-termination factor Rho

Abstract

In this study we describe BI-K0058, a new inhibitor of the transcription-termination factor Rho belonging to a different chemical class from bicyclomycin, the only known antibiotic acting on Rho. BI-K0058 inhibits the poly(C)-dependent ATPase activity of Rho with an IC(50) of 25 microM as well as in vitro transcription-termination of two natural substrates, the Salmonella enterica hisG cistron and the f1 phage intergenic region. BI-K0058 does not affect photolabeling of Rho by ATP. The results of gel mobility shift experiments with a natural RNA substrate demonstrate that BI-K0058 inhibits the formation of the ATP-independent high affinity Rho-RNA complex.

Myotonia congenita is an autosomal dominantly or recessively inherited muscle disorder causing impaired muscle relaxation and variable degrees of permanent muscle weakness, abnormal currents linked to the chloride channel gene (CLCN1) encoding the chloride channel on skeletal muscle membrane. We describe 12 novel mutations: c.1606G>C (p.Val536Leu), c.2533G>A (p.Gly845Ser), c.2434C>T (p.Gln812X), c.1499T>G (p.E500X), c.1012C>T (p.Arg338X), c.2403+1G>A, c.2840T>A (p.Val947Glu), c.1598C>T (p.Thr533Ile), c.1110delC, c.590T>A (p.Ile197Arg), c.2276insA Fs800X, c.490T>C (p.Trp164Arg) in 22 unrelated Italian patients. To further understand the functional outcome of selected missense mutations (p.Trp164Arg, p.Ile197Arg and p.Gly845Ser, and the previously reported p.Gly190Ser) we characterized the biophysical properties of mutant ion channels in tsA cell model. In the physiological range of muscle membrane potential, all the tested mutations, except p.Gly845Ser, reduced the open probability, increased the fast and slow components of deactivation and affected pore properties. This suggests a decrease in macroscopic chloride currents impairing membrane potential repolarization and causing hyperexcitability in muscle membranes. Detailed clinical features are given of the 8 patients characterized by cell electrophysiology. These data expand the spectrum of CLCN1 mutations and may contribute to genotype-phenotype correlations. Furthermore, we provide insights into the fine protein structure of ClC-1 and its physiological role in the maintenance of membrane resting potential.

Abstract

William John Plant of Maitland, NSW - Australia, died on 20 October, 1996. This remarkable poultry fancier, amateur researcher and historian was born on 3 May, 1921. Three years in high school were followed by work in engineering and three years on a technical college course. From 1939, interrupted by army service during World War II, he operated as amateur radio station. In 1965, in conjunction with his son David, he started to breed Pekin Bantams and they became members of the NSW Pekin Bantam Club. It was from this time that an interest in fancy fowl, and the domestic fowl generally, took on a progressively more important role in William's life.\ud \ud As breeders of Black Pekin Bantams, Bill and David Plant became Club Grand Champions on many occasions. William Plant served as Club Secretary and Newsletter editor (since 1974). This led ultimately to his co-editing The Australian Pekin Bantam (1993). The intriguing combination of interests in Pekin Bantams and short-wave radio provided the basis for his investigations and research into the origins and history not only of this variety, but into that of other varieties and the domestic fowl and poultry generally. While he wrote many articles for the poultry press on the history and development of varieties of domestic fowl and other poultry species in Australia, his increasing passion became the origin and evolution of the domestic fowl...

Abstract

A multicentre, randomised, open trial with a 2 x 2 factorial design was conducted to compare the benefits and risks of two thrombolytic agents, streptokinase (SK, 1·5 MU infused intravenously over 30-60 min) and alteplase (tPA, 100 mg infused intravenously over 3 h) in patients with acute myocardial infarction admitted to coronary care units within 6 h from onset of symptoms. The patients were also randomised to receive heparin (12 500 U subcutaneously twice daily until discharge from hospital, starting 12 h after beginning the tPA or SK infusion) or usual therapy. All patients without specific contraindications were given atenolol (5-10 mg iv) and aspirin (300-325 mg a day). The end-point of the study was the combined estimate of death plus severe left ventricular damage. 12 490 patients were randomised to four treatment groups (SK alone, SK plus heparin, tPA alone, tPA plus heparin). No specific differences between the two thrombolytic agents were detected as regards the combined end-point (tPA 23·1%; SK 22·5%; relative risk 1·04, 95% Cl 0·95-1·13), nor after the addition of heparin to the aspirin treatment (hep 22·7%, no hep 22·9%; RR 0·99, 95% Cl 0·91-1·08). The outcome of patients allocated to the four treatment groups was similar with respect to baseline risk factors such as age, Killip class, hours from onset of symptoms, and site and type of infarct. The rates of major in-hospital cardiac complications (reinfarction, post-infarction angina) were also similar. The incidence of major bleeds was significantly higher in SK and heparin treated patients (respectively, tPA 0·5%, SK 1·0%, RR 0·57, 95% Cl 0·38-0·85; hep 1·0%, no hep 0·6%, RR 1·64, 95% Cl 1·09-2·45), whereas the overall incidence of stroke was similar in all groups. SK and tPA appear equally effective and safe for use in routine conditions of care, in all infarct patients who have no contraindications, with or without post-thrombolytic heparin treatment. The 8·8% hospital mortality of the study population (compared with approximately 13% in the control cohort of the GISSI-1 trial) indicates the beneficial impact of the proven acute treatments for AMI.
