23. Impact behavior of 9-Cr and 12-Cr ferritic steels after low-temperature irradiation

Abstract

Miniature Charpy impact specimens of 9Cr-1MoVNb and 12Cr-1MoVW steels and these steels with 1 and 2% Ni were irradiated in the High-Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at 50°C to displacement damage levels of up to 9 dpa. Nickel was added to study the effect of transmutation helium. Irradiation caused an increase in the ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT). The 9Cr-1MoVNb steels, with and without nickel, showed a larger shift than the 12Cr-1MoVW steels, with and without nickel. The results indicated that helium also increased the DBTT. The same steels were previously irradiated at higher temperatures. From the present and past tests, the effect of irradiation temperature on the DBTT behavior can be evaluated. For the 9Cr-1MoVNb steel, there is a continuous decrease in the magnitude of the DBTT increase up to an irradiation temperature of about 400°C, after which the shift drops rapidly to zero at about 450°C. The DBTT of the 12Cr-1MoVW steel shows a maximum increase at an irradiation temperature of about 400°C and less of an increase at either higher or lower irradiation temperatures.

Abstract

Hastelloy X, an Ni--Cr--Fe--Mo alloy, may be an important structural alloy for components of gas-cooled reactor systems. Expected applications of this alloy in the High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (HTGR) are discussed, and the development of interim mechanical properties and supporting data are reported. Properties of concern include tensile, creep, creep-rupture, fatigue, creep-fatigue interaction, subcritical crack growth, thermal stability, and the influence of helium environments with controlled amounts of impurities on these properties. In order to develop these properties in helium environments that are expected to be prototypic of HTGR operating conditions, it was necessary to construct special environmental test systems. Details of construction and operating parameters are described. Interim results from tests designed to determine the above properties are presented. To date a fairly extensive amount of information has been generated on this material at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and elsewhere concerning behavior in air, which is reviewed. However, only limited data are available from tests conducted in helium. Comparisons of the fatigue and subcritical growth behavior in air between Hastelloy X and a number of other structural alloys are given.

34. Characterization of ductile fracture toughness based on subsized charpy and tensile test results

Abstract

Micromechanical material models have been established as a powerful tool for the prediction of the ductile fracture resistance. Suitable damage parameters of the Gurson model can be obtained from small volume specimens like tensile, Charpy or subsized Charpy specimens and then applied to predict transferable J-resistance curves as obtained from standard fracture mechanics specimens. In this paper dynamic tests on subsized Charpy and precracked bend specimens, SE(B), as well as static and dynamic experiments on tensile specimens for the ferritic steel A533B (HSST 03), are presented and analyzed. Two- and three-dimensional finite element models are used to determine the stress-strain behaviour and strain rate sensitivity and to find a set of damage parameters which explains the results. These parameters are then used to predict a J-resistance curve representative for a compact specimen C(T)25.
