A T FIRST glance there would seem to be very little in common between the world of Jeremiah and our own. He was a subject of the tiny kingdom of Judah which could be tucked away comfortably in the corner of one of our medium-sized states. For a few brief years which coincided with the first period of his own ministry the prophet's nation had attempted to assert its independence, only in the end to be ground to pieces under the heel of the Chaldean conqueror, the fabulous Nebuchadrezzar. We, quite to the contrary, belong to the greatest military power of our age. In two great wars in a single generation we have seen the downfall of the Kaisers, Fuehrers and Duces and we have emerged from the conflict with the mightiest weapon of all times in our hands. Certainly the relevance of Jeremiah for our age does not come from any chance external similarities. We must look below the surface

Three closely associated travertine deposits that have been precipitated from hot springs occur near Wellsville, Colorado. Field relations suggest that hot waters dissolved carbonate from underlying Ordovician dolomites and migrated to the surface along faults that border each deposit. Conformity of the deposits to present topography plus several nearby tepid springs date the deposits as very recent. A post-Sangamonian(?) age is indicated by their occurrence on river gravels of Sangamonian(?) age.

The thermal water deposits of the Dubois, Wyoming, area occur in 5 groups in the forms of domes, cliffs, flows, extinct geyser orifices, and natural bridges. The natural bridge group is not discussed. Two of the groups are along principal streams which flow perpendicular to outcrop strike; the remaining 2 groups parallel the strike of the outcrops. The deposits, which are principally calcium carbonate, occur on strata ranging in age from Mississippian to Permian; the undoubted sources of the mineral enrichment were the underlying Paleozoic limestones. All of the thermal water deposits are underlain by a travertine cemented conglomerate which seemingly dates them as post-Pleistocene, but the correct age is dependent on the age of warm Spring Canyon. The mineral-bearing waters reached the surface by travelling along bedding planes and possibly along faults.

The Marietta syncline is complementary to the Wichita-Criner Hills arch, one of the most prolific oil-producing areas of Oklahoma. The middle Pennsylvanian producing sands of the Wichita-Criner Hills arch are present in the Marietta syncline and are separated from the pre-Pennsylvanian strata by an important unconformity. Oil shows have also been found in the pre-Pennsylvanian formations. The northeast flank of the Marietta syncline must be considered an unproved and virtually untested petroliferous province. The presence of a small producing field 10 miles southwest in the syncline proper, known reservoir strata, unconformities, and hydrocarbon shows should be enough to justify further exploration.

The northwestern part of the Wind River Basin and Range is in the northwest tip of Fremont County, Wyoming, and within sight of the Absaroka Mountain escarpment. From the Precambrian core of the range to the basin area surrounding Dubois, a nearly complete stratigraphic column is present; the best exposures can be found in the many canyons cut in the dip slopes. Foot-by-foot measured sections are presented. The Precambrian to Upper Jurassic stratigraphy was studied along Warm Spring Creek, the Upper Jurassic to Cretaceous in the Little Horse Creek area, and the lower Cenozoic around Brooks Lake. Miscellaneous studies were made at Torry Creek and throughout the area.
