Supernova remnants (SNRs) contribute to regulate the star formation efficiency and evolution of galaxies. As they expand into the interstellar medium (ISM), they transfer vast amounts of energy and momentum that displace, compress, and heat the surrounding material. Despite the extensive work in galaxy evolution models, it remains to be observationally validated to what extent the molecular ISM is affected by the interaction with SNRs. We use the first results of the ESO–ARO Public Spectroscopic Survey SHREC to investigate the shock interaction between the SNR IC443 and the nearby molecular clump G. We use high-sensitivity SiO(2-1) and H13CO+(1-0) maps obtained by SHREC together with SiO(1-0) observations obtained with the 40-m telescope at the Yebes Observatory. We find that the bulk of the SiO emission is arising from the ongoing shock interaction between IC443 and clump G. The shocked gas shows a well-ordered kinematic structure, with velocities blue-shifted with respect to the central velocity of the SNR, similar to what observed towards other SNR–cloud interaction sites. The shock compression enhances the molecular gas density, n(H2), up to >105 cm−3, a factor of >10 higher than the ambient gas density and similar to values required to ignite star formation. Finally, we estimate that up to 50 per cent of the momentum injected by IC443 is transferred to the interacting molecular material. Infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are very dense and highly extincted regions that host the initial conditions of star and stellar cluster formation. It is crucial to study the kinematics and molecular content of IRDCs to test their formation mechanism and ultimately characterize these initial conditions. We have obtained high-sensitivity Silicon Monoxide, SiO(2–1), emission maps towards the six IRDCs, G018.82–00.28, G019.27+00.07, G028.53–00.25, G028.67+00.13, G038.95–00.47, and G053.11+00.05 (cloud A, B, D, E, I, and J, respectively), using the 30-m antenna at the Instituto de Radioastronomía Millimétrica (IRAM30m). We have investigated the SiO spatial distribution and kinematic structure across the six clouds to look for signatures of cloud–cloud collision events that may have formed the IRDCs and triggered star formation within them. Towards clouds A, B, D, I, and J, we detect spatially compact SiO emission with broad-line profiles that are spatially coincident with massive cores. Towards the IRDCs A and I, we report an additional SiO component that shows narrow-line profiles and that is widespread across quiescent regions. Finally, we do not detect any significant SiO emission towards cloud E. We suggest that the broad and compact SiO emission detected towards the clouds is likely associated with ongoing star formation activity within the IRDCs. However, the additional narrow and widespread SiO emission detected towards cloud A and I may have originated from the collision between the IRDCs and flows of molecular gas pushed towards the clouds by nearby H  ii regions. Infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are cold, dense regions of high (optical and infrared) extinction, believed to be the birthplace of high-mass stars and stellar clusters. The physical mechanisms leading to the formation of these IRDCs are not completely understood and it is thus important to study their molecular gas kinematics and chemical content to search for any signature of the IRDCs formation process. Using the 30-m-diameter antenna at the Instituto de Radioastronomía Milimétrica (IRAM), we have obtained emission maps of dense gas tracers (H13CO+ and HN13C) and typical shock tracers (SiO and CH3OH) towards three IRDCs, G028.37+00.07, G034.43+00.24, and G034.77-00.55 (clouds C, F, and G, respectively).We have studied the molecular gas kinematics in these clouds and, consistent with previous works towards other IRDCs, the clouds show complex gas kinematics with several velocity-coherent substructures separated in velocity space by a few km s-1. Correlated with these complex kinematic structures, widespread (parsec-scale) emission of SiO and CH3OH is present in all the three clouds. For clouds C and F, known to be actively forming stars, widespread SiO and CH3OH is likely associated with on-going star formation activity. However, for cloud G, which lacks either 8 or 24 μm sources and 4.5 μm H2 shock-excited emission, the detected widespread SiO and CH3OH emission may have originated in a large-scale shock interaction, although a scenario involving a population of low-mass stars driving molecular outflows cannot be fully ruled out. Objective To investigate electrophysiologically the reproducibility of oropharyngeal swallowing in patients with ALS. Methods We enrolled 26 ALS patients, both with and without clinical signs of dysphagia, and 30 age-matched controls. The reproducibility of the electrophysiological signals related to the oral phase (electromyographic activity of the submental/suprahyoid muscles) and the pharyngeal phase (laryngeal-pharyngeal mechanogram) of swallowing across repeated swallows was assessed. To do this we computed two similarity indexes (SI) by using previously described mathematical algorithms. Results The reproducibility of oropharyngeal swallowing was significantly reduced both in patients with and in those without clinical signs of dysphagia, with more marked alterations being detected in the dysphagic group. The SI of both phases of swallowing, oral and pharyngeal, correlated significantly with dysphagia severity and disease severity. Conclusions In ALS different pathophysiological mechanisms can alter the stereotyped motor behaviors underlying normal swallowing, thus reducing the reproducibility of the swallowing act. A decrease in swallowing reproducibility could be a preclinical sign of dysphagia and, beyond a certain threshold, a pathological hallmark of oropharyngeal dysphagia. Swallowing difficulties are a common symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS). The early detection and treatment of dysphagia is critical to prevent complications, including poor nutrition, dehydration, and lung infections. Recently, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been proven to be effective in ameliorating swallowing problems in stroke patients. In this pilot study, we aimed to assess safety and efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in the treatment of dysphagia in MS patients. We screened 30 patients by using the 10-item DYsphagia in MUltiple Sclerosis (DYMUS) questionnaire, and patients at risk for dysphagia underwent a clinical and fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES). Six patients who presented with mild to moderate dysphagia underwent the experimental procedures. These consisted of 5 sessions of anodal tDCS applied in consecutive days over the right swallowing motor cortex. Patients were followed-up at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after treatment, and changes in the Dysphagia Outcome and Severity Scale (DOSS) score between baseline and post-tDCS were assessed. Our results showed that in all patients, the tDCS treatment determined a mild but significant clinical benefit (one-point improvement in the DOSS score) lasting up to 1 month. In conclusion, our preliminary results show that anodal tDCS has therapeutic potential in the treatment of swallowing problems in patients suffering with MS. Previous studies of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia found that the hallucinations were reduced by the application of transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). Here we describe a case of traumatic brain injury associated with continuous music hallucinations. An MRI scan showed a structural lesion of the right temporal pole and a PET scan indicated a hyperactive area of the posterior right temporal lobe. We hypothesized that rTMS applied to the right temporal area would reduce this activity and the corresponding hallucinations. The patient's music hallucinations were significantly reduced by rTMS treatment. A PET scan following treatment also indicated that rTMS treatment reduced brain activity in the right temporal lobe. This case provides initial evidence that rTMS may be a successful treatment of syndromes associated with hyperactive brain areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Massive stars play important roles throughout the universe; however, their formation remains poorly understood. Observations of jets and outflows in high-mass star-forming regions, as well as surveys of young stellar object (YSO) content, can help test theoretical models of massive star formation. Aims. We aim at characterizing the massive star-forming region AFGL 5180 in the near-infrared (NIR), identifying outflows and relating these to sub-mm/mm sources, as well as surveying the overall YSO surface number density to compare to massive star formation models. Methods. Broad- and narrow-band imaging of AFGL 5180 was made in the NIR with the Large Binocular Telescope, in both seeing-limited (~0.5″) and high angular resolution (~0.09″) Adaptive Optics (AO) modes, as well as with the Hubble Space Telescope. Archival continuum data from the Atacama Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) was also utilized. Results. At least 40 jet knots were identified via NIR emission from H2 and [FeII] tracing shocked gas. Bright jet knots outflowing from the central most massive protostar, S4 (estimated mass ~11 M⊙, via SED fitting), are detected towards the east of the source and are resolved in fine detail with the AO imaging. Additional knots are distributed throughout the field, likely indicating the presence of multiple driving sources. Sub-millimeter sources detected by ALMA are shown to be grouped in two main complexes, AFGL 5180 M and a small cluster ~15″ (0.15 pc in projection) to the south, AFGL 5180 S. From our NIR continuum images we identify YSO candidates down to masses of ~0.1 M⊙. Combined with the sub-mm sources, this yields a surface number density of such YSOs of N* ~ 103pc−2 within a projected radius of about 0.1 pc. Such a value is similar to those predicted by models of both core accretion from a turbulent clump environment and competitive accretion. The radial profile of N* is relatively flat on scales out to 0.2 pc, with only modest enhancement around the massive protostar inside 0.05 pc, which provides additional constraints on these massive star formation models. Conclusions. This study demonstrates the utility of high-resolution NIR imaging, in particular with AO, for detecting outflow activity and YSOs in distant regions. The presented images reveal the complex morphology of outflow-shocked gas within the large-scale bipolar flow of a massive protostar, as well as clear evidence for several other outflow driving sources in the region. Background: Cognitive profile in migraine patients still remains undefined. Contradictory evidence has been provided, with impairments in different cognitive domains, normal cognition, or even better performance compared to healthy controls (HC). The latter is of particular interest considering the evidence of glutamatergic upregulation in migraine, particularly in the visual cortex, and the role of the glutamatergic system in synaptic plasticity and learning. The aim of our study is to compare cognitive performance for visuospatial memory and learning (supraspan modality) between migraineurs without aura (MwoA) and HC.Methods: Twenty-one subjects suffering from MwoA and 21 HC were enrolled. Migraineurs during the interictal phase and HC underwent visuospatial memory test (Corsi test) and verbal memory test (Buschke Selective Reminding Test) in supraspan modality, Trial Making Test A (TMTA) and B (TMTB) as test exploring attention, and TMTB-TMTA as test of executive functioning. Depression was assessed with the Beck Depression Inventory Short Form (BDI-SF). Migraine characteristics (i.e., disease duration and frequency expressed as attacks per month) were collected.Results: Subjects with MwoA showed better performance than HC in test exploring both short (p = 0.002) and long-term (p = 0.001) visuospatial memory. No significant difference between groups was found in verbal memory, attention, executive functioning, and depression (BDI-SF). No significant association emerged between cognitive performance and migraine characteristics.Discussion: Subjects with MwoA had significant better performance in visuospatial memory and learning than HC. Occipito-parietal hyperexcitability (in particular in the visual cortex), which is a hallmark of the migraine brain, would probably explain these results. The article presents a case study of a 24-year-old man with an acute onset of bilateral ptosis and inconstant diplopia. He has been referred to a neurological institute for the suspected diagnosis of ocular myasthenia. The patient also suffered from abdominal pain with vomiting and diarrhea. The ice pack test for the differential diagnosis of ptosis and diplopia has been performed and two months after the diagnosis his electrophysiological studies and clinical evaluation were normal.

Recent observations of the pre-stellar core L1544 and the younger starless core L1498 have revealed that complex organic molecules (COMs) are enhanced in the gas phase towards their outer and intermediate-density shells. Our goal is to determine the level of chemical complexity towards the starless core L1517B, which seems younger than L1498, and compare it with the other two previously studied cores to see if there is a chemical evolution within the cores. We have carried out 3 mm high-sensitivity observations towards two positions in the L1517B starless core: the core's centre and the position where the methanol emission peaks (at a distance of ∼5000 au from the core's centre). Our observations reveal that a lower number of COMs and COM precursors are detected in L1517B with respect to L1498 and L1544, and also show lower abundances. Besides methanol, we only detected CH3O, H2CCO, CH3CHO, CH3CN, CH3NC, HCCCN, and HCCNC. Their measured abundances are ∼3 times larger towards the methanol peak than towards the core's centre, mimicking the behaviour found towards the more evolved cores L1544 and L1498. We propose that the differences in the chemical complexity observed between the three studied starless cores are a consequence of their evolution, with L1517B being the less evolved one, followed by L1498 and L1544. Chemical complexity in these cores seems to increase over time, with N-bearing molecules forming first and O-bearing COMs forming at a later stage as a result of the catastrophic depletion of CO. Background: Nocturnal stridor and respiratory abnormalities are important features of multiple system atrophy (MSA) with relevance to patient survival, and they are detected and evaluated mainly through video-polysomnography (video-PSG). Diurnal laryngoscopy seems to yield abnormal findings only in the presence of significant vocal cord (VC) dysfunction.Aim: To assess whether specific electrophysiological patterns of diurnal EMG of VC muscles may indicate nocturnal stridor or respiratory dysfunctions in MSA patients.Materials and Methods: Seventeen patients with probable MSA were examined. A full-night video-PSG to collect standard breathing parameters (apnea/hypopnea index, mean HbSAO2, oxygen desaturation index, total sleep time with HbSaO2 below 90%) was performed in all the patients. Laryngoscopy and EMG investigation of adductor (thyroarytenoid-TA) and abductor (posterior cricoarytenoid-PCA) muscles of the VCs were also performed.Results: Both the laryngeal EMG abnormalities (based on MUAP analysis and kinesiologic EMG investigation of VC muscles) and the laryngoscopic alterations correlated with video-PSG respiratory abnormalities. Specific patterns of EMG findings were consistently found in MSA subjects with nocturnal stridor detected at PSG. In particular, the following EMG findings were related to the severity of breathing abnormalities and the presence of stridor on video-PSG: neurogenic pattern on MUAP analysis of the PCA, paradoxical activation of the TA during inspiration and tonic EMG activity of the TA during quiet breathing.Conclusions: Electromyographic/kinesiologic investigation of VC muscles during wakefulness provides additional information on the pathophysiology of the respiratory abnormalities in MSA patients that could be useful for guiding the choice of the best appropriate treatment and care. Infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are potential hosts of the elusive early phases of high mass star formation (HMSF). Here, we conduct an in-depth analysis of the fragmentation properties of a sample of 10 IRDCs, which have been highlighted as some of the best candidates to study HMSF within the Milky Way. To do so, we have obtained a set of large mosaics covering these IRDCs with Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at Band 3 (or 3 mm). These observations have a high angular resolution (∼3 arcsec; ∼0.05 pc), and high continuum and spectral line sensitivity (∼0.15 mJy beam−1 and ∼0.2 K per 0.1 km s−1 channel at the N2H+ (1 − 0) transition). From the dust continuum emission, we identify 96 cores ranging from low to high mass (M  = 3.4−50.9 M⊙) that are gravitationally bound (αvir = 0.3−1.3) and which would require magnetic field strengths of B  = 0.3−1.0 mG to be in virial equilibrium. We combine these results with a homogenized catalogue of literature cores to recover the hierarchical structure within these clouds over four orders of magnitude in spatial scale (0.01–10 pc). Using supplementary observations at an even higher angular resolution, we find that the smallest fragments (<0.02 pc) within this hierarchy do not currently have the mass and/or the density required to form high-mass stars. None the less, the new ALMA observations presented in this paper have facilitated the identification of 19 (6 quiescent and 13 star-forming) cores that retain >16 M⊙ without further fragmentation. These high-mass cores contain trans-sonic non-thermal motions, are kinematically sub-virial, and require moderate magnetic field strengths for support against collapse. The 14N/15N ratio in molecules exhibits a large variation in star-forming regions, especially when measured from N2H+ isotopologues. However, there are only a few studies performed at high-angular resolution. We present the first interferometric survey of the 14N/15N ratio in N2H+ obtained with Atacama Large Millimeter Array observations towards four infrared-dark clouds harbouring 3 mm continuum cores associated with different physical properties. We detect N15NH+ (1–0) in |$\sim 20\!-\!40{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the cores, depending on the host cloud. The 14N/15N values measured towards the millimetre continuum cores range from a minimum of ∼80 up to a maximum of ∼400. The spread of values is narrower than that found in any previous single-dish survey of high-mass star-forming regions and than that obtained using the total power data only. This suggests that the 14N/15N ratio is on average higher in the diffuse gaseous envelope of the cores and stresses the need for high-angular resolution maps to measure correctly the 14N/15N ratio in dense cores embedded in IRDCs. The average 14N/15N ratio of ∼210 is also lower than the interstellar value at the Galactocentric distance of the clouds (∼300–330), although the sensitivity of our observations does not allow us to unveil 14N/15N ratios higher than ∼400. No clear trend is found between the 14N/15N ratio and the core physical properties. We find only a tentative positive trend between 14N/15N and H2 column density. Background and purpose: The aim was to identify the clinical and diagnostic investigations that may help to support a diagnosis of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) in patients not fulfilling the European Federation of Neurological Societies and Peripheral Nerve Society (EFNS/PNS) electrodiagnostic criteria. Methods: The data from patients with a clinical diagnosis of CIDP included in a national database were retrospectively reviewed. Results: In all, 535 patients with a diagnosis of CIDP were included. This diagnosis fulfilled the EFNS/PNS criteria in 468 patients (87.2%) (definite in 430, probable in 33, possible in three, while two had chronic immune sensory polyradiculopathy). Sixty‐seven patients had a medical history and clinical signs compatible with CIDP but electrodiagnostic studies did not fulfill the EFNS/PNS criteria for CIDP. These patients had similar clinical features and frequency of abnormal supportive criteria for the diagnosis of CIDP compared to patients fulfilling EFNS/PNS criteria. Two or more abnormal supportive criteria were present in 40 (61.2%) patients rising to 54 (80.6%) if a history of a relapsing course as a possible supportive criterion was also included. Increased cerebrospinal fluid proteins and response to immune therapy most frequently helped in supporting the diagnosis of CIDP. Response to therapy was similarly frequent in patients fulfilling or not EFNS/PNS criteria (87.3% vs. 85.9%). Conclusions: Patients with a clinical diagnosis of CIDP had similar clinical findings, frequency of abnormal supportive criteria and response to therapy compared to patients fulfilling EFNS/PNS criteria. The presence of abnormal supportive criteria may help in supporting the diagnosis of CIDP in patients with a medical history and clinical signs compatible with this diagnosis but non‐diagnostic nerve conduction studies. • The study aims to assess the role tDCS as add-on to detoxification in chronic migraine associated to medication overuse headache. • Anodal tDCS was superior to sham stimulation in reducing monthly migraine days after 1 month and 6 months from detoxification. • Alpha rhythm was significantly enhanced over occipital leads in the tDCS group when compared to the sham group. Little evidence is available on the role of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in patients affected by chronic migraine (CM) and medication overuse headache (MOH). We aim to investigate the effects of tDCS in patients with CM and MOH as well as its role on brain activity. Twenty patients with CM and MOH were hospitalized for a 7-day detoxification treatment. Upon admission, patients were randomly assigned to anodal tDCS or sham stimulation delivered over the primary motor cortex contralateral to the prevalent migraine pain side every day for 5 days. Clinical data were recorded at baseline (T0), after 1 month (T2) and 6 months (T3). EEG recording was performed at T0, at the end of the tDCS/Sham treatment, and at T2. At T2 and T3, we found a significant reduction in monthly migraine days (p = 0.001), which were more pronounced in the tDCS group when compared to the sham group (p = 0.016). At T2, we found a significant increase of alpha rhythm in occipital leads, which was significantly higher in tDCS group when compared to sham group. tDCS showed adjuvant effects to detoxification in the management of patients with CM and MOH. The EEG recording showed a significant potentiation of alpha rhythm, which may represent a correlate of the underlying changes in cortico-thalamic connections. This study suggests a possible role for tDCS in the treatment of CM and MOH. The observed clinical improvement is coupled with a potentiation of EEG alpha rhythm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neutron-induced fission reactions play a crucial role in a variety of fields of fundamental and applied nuclear science. In basic nuclear physics they provide important information on properties of nuclear matter, while in nuclear technology they are at the basis of present and future reactor designs. Finally, there is a renewed interest in fission reactions in nuclear astrophysics due to the multi-messenger observation of neutron star mergers and the important role played by fission recycling in r-process nucleosynthesis. Although studied for several decades, many fundamental questions still remain on fission reactions, while modern applications and the development of more reliable nuclear models require high-accuracy and consistent experimental data on fission cross sections and other fission observables. To address these needs, an extensive fission research programme has been carried out at the n_TOF neutron time-of-flight facility at CERN during the last 18 years, taking advantage of the high energy resolution, high luminosity and wide energy range of the neutron beam, as well as of the detection and data acquisition systems designed for this purpose. While long-lived isotopes are studied on the 185 m long flight-path, the recent construction of a second experimental area at a distance of about 19 m has opened the way to challenging measurements of short-lived actinides. This article provides an overview of the n_TOF experimental programme on neutron-induced fission reactions along with the main characteristics of the facility, the various detection systems and data analysis techniques used. The most important results on several major and minor actinides obtained so far and the future perspectives of fission measurements at n_TOF are presented and discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and purpose: The role of lifestyle and dietary habits and antecedent events has not been clearly identified in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP). Methods: Information was collected about modifiable environmental factors and antecedent infections and vaccinations in patients with CIDP included in an Italian CIDP Database. Only patients who reported not having changed their diet or the lifestyle habits investigated in the study after the appearance of CIDP were included. The partners of patients with CIDP were chosen as controls. Gender‐matched analysis was performed with randomly selected controls with a 1:1 ratio of patients and controls. Results: Dietary and lifestyle data of 323 patients and 266 controls were available. A total of 195 cases and 195 sex‐matched controls were used in the analysis. Patients eating rice at least three times per week or eating fish at least once per week appeared to be at decreased risk of acquiring CIDP. Data on antecedent events were collected in 411 patients. Antecedent events within 1–42 days before CIDP onset were reported by 15.5% of the patients, including infections in 12% and vaccinations in 1.5%. Patients with CIDP and antecedent infections more often had an acute onset of CIDP and cranial nerve involvement than those without these antecedent events. Conclusions: The results of this preliminary study seem to indicate that some dietary habits may influence the risk of CIDP and that antecedent infections may have an impact on the onset and clinical presentation of the disease. Since 2017, the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) – INFN Catania is involved into the ASI Supported Irradiation Facilties (ASIF) Project. This program is formulated by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) aims to establish an interactive coordinated set of the irradiation facilities, throughout the national territory, serving the national and international space communities. All the facilities involved must follow the recommendations provided by the ESA in order to obtain the standardization of the space testing procedures. Two beamlines at LNS have been appropriately adapted for Integrated Dose Test and Single Event Effect measurement. A 1:5,000 scale geological map and 31 geological cross-sections are presented for the surroundings of Amatrice village (central Apennines, Italy), epicentral area of the first damaging earthquake of the 2016–2017 seismic sequence. This detailed geological dataset focuses on: (i) the extent, the thickness, and the internal stratigraphic architecture of the Quaternary continental deposits; (ii) the bedding and the thickness of the Miocene substratum; and (iii) the spatial distribution of the main fault systems. The provided dataset would update the available regional geological maps in deciphering the syn-to-post-orogenic history of the Amatrice Basin. Eventually, the accuracy of the geological mapping would represent a basic tool for interpreting and integrating the multidisciplinary dataset deriving from post-seismic activities. The new class of large telescopes, like the future Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), are designed towork with a laser guide star (LGS) tuned to a resonance of atmospheric sodium atoms. This wavefront sensing technique presents complex issues when applied to big telescopes for many reasons, mainly linked to the finite distance of the LGS, the launching angle, tip-tilt indetermination and focus anisoplanatism. The implementation of a laboratory prototype for the LGS wavefront sensor (WFS) at the beginning of the phase study of MAORY (Multiconjugate Adaptive Optics Relay) for ELT first light has been indispensable in investigating specific mitigation strategies for the LGS WFS issues. This paper presents the test results of the LGS WFS prototype under different working conditions. The accuracy within which the LGS images are generated on the Shack-Hartmann WFS has been cross-checked with the MAORY simulation code. The experiments show the effect of noise on centroiding precision, the impact of LGS image truncation on wavefront sensing accuracy as well as the temporal evolution of the sodium density profile and LGS image under-sampling. Les spondyloarthrites (SpA) sont fortement associées à l'allèle HLA-B27 du complexe majeur d'histocompatibilité de classe I. Cette forte association a été découverte il y a près de 50 ans, mais son rôle dans la pathogénie des SpA reste encore largement incomprise. La preuve du rôle pathogène du HLA-B27 provient du modèle du rat transgénique pour le HLA-B27 et la b2microglobuline humaine (rats B27). Ces rats développent de manière spontanée des manifestations comparables à la SpA humaine. Des travaux antérieurs ont révélé l'importance de deux cytokines pro-inflammatoires majeures que sont l'IL-17 et le TNFα lors de la SpA. L'objectif de notre étude était de déterminer le(s) sous-populations(s) lymphocytaire(s) productrice(s) de ces deux cytokines pro-inflammatoires lors de la SpA et tester leur pathogénicité in vivo chez des rats nude protégés du développement de la SpA. Les lymphocytes ont été isolés et caractérisés à partir des tissus cibles de la SpA et des organes lymphoïdes drainant des tissus provenant de rats B27 malades ou prémorbides. Des rats non transgéniques ont servi de témoins. Les données humaines ont été obtenues à partir du sang périphérique de patients (n = 39) et de témoins sains (n = 36). La pathogénicité des sous-populations lymphocytaires a été évaluée par transfert de 40 000 cellules à des rats athymiques (nude) B27 protégés du développement de la SpA. Nous avons montré que les lymphocytes T conventionnels (CD4+ Foxp3-) étaient la principale source d'IL-17 et de TNFα au cours de la SpA du rat B27. Ces cellules productrices d'IL-17 étaient déjà surreprésentées de manière significative dans le sang, la moelle osseuse et le colon de rats B27 prémorbides (p < 0,05), suggérant un rôle initiateur dans la pathogénie des SpA. L'expression du récepteur de chimiokines CCR6 par cette sous-population productrice d'IL-17 nous a permis de l'isoler. Le transfert des lymphocytes T CD4+ CCR6+ de rats B27 à des rats B27 athymiques a été suivi d'une induction d'arthrite et de colite chez 50 % des receveurs, montrant pour la première fois un rôle proarthritogène des cellules productrices d'IL-17 au cours de la SpA. De façon analogue, les lymphocytes T CD4+ CCR6+ étaient augmentés chez les patients atteints de SpA (p < 0,01) suggérant CCR6 comme cible thérapeutique possible au cours de cette maladie. Cette étude montre que la population des lymphocytes T CD4+ producteurs d'IL-17 est augmentée avant l'apparition des symptômes de SpA chez le rat B27 et est capable d'initier la SpA du rat. Des études complémentaires permettront de déterminer les mécanismes à l'origine de la différenciation de ces cellules dans le colon et la moelle osseuse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Habituation, i.e. the decremental response to repeated sensorial stimulation, is studied in humans through evoked potential stimulation. Mechanisms underlying habituation are not yet cleared, even if inhibitory circuits are supposed to play an important role. Light deprivation (LD) increases visual cortical excitability likely through down-regulation of GABA circuits. We previously found that high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (hf-rTMS) can revert these facilitatory effects likely restoring the activity of inhibitory circuits. Here, we studied the effects of LD and rTMS on habituation of visual evoked potentials (VEPs). The hypothesis was that if the inhibitory circuits have a role in habituation, then LD that downregulates GABA circuits, should impair habituation that in turn should be restored by hf-rTMS. Fifteen healthy subjects underwent VEPs recording in baseline (without LD), in LD alone (without rTMS), in LD and 1 Hz rTMS and in LD and 10 Hz rTMS. Habituation observed in baseline (without LD) was significantly impaired after LD; 10 Hz but not 1 Hz rTMS was able to restore normal habituation phenomena. VEPs habituation is impaired by LD but it could be restored if hf-rTMS is given during LD. As LD acts reducing GABA circuits activity and hf-rTMS likely upregulates such circuits, these data give support to the hypothesis that cortical inhibition can play a relevant role in mechanisms underlying habituation. Abstract: Glatiramer acetate (GA) is an immunomodulator approved for therapy of relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), but recent findings indicate that it may also have additional, neurotrophic effects. Here, we found that supernatants from human GA-reactive T lymphocytes potentiated oligodendrocyte numbers in rodent and human oligodendrocyte progenitor (OPC) cultures. Effects of Th2-polarized lines were stronger than Th1-polarized cells. Microarray and ELISA analyses revealed that neurotrophic factors induced in Th2- and Th1-polarized GA-reactive lines included IGF-2 and BMP-7 respectively, and functional studies confirmed IGF-2 as trophic for OPCs. Our results support the concept that GA therapy may result in supportive effects on oligodendrocytes in RRMS patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The FRIBs facility at the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud produces, since a few years, radioactive ion beams (RIBs) at intermediate energies, by projectile fragmentation. The possibility of using the produced RIBs as secondary beams in nuclear physics experiments by applying the tagging technique, i.e. the identification, event-by-event, in charge, mass and energy of each ion of the RIBs cocktail selected by the fragment separator, before it interacts with the secondary target, has been demonstrated. Abstract: The EXCYT facility at the INFN-LNS is based on a K-800 superconducting cyclotron, as a driver for stable heavy ion beams (up to 80MeV/amu, 1pμA), and on a 15MV tandem for post-accelerating the radioactive ion beams produced in a target-ion source (TIS) assembly. For some ion beam such as for Li, the higher extraction efficiency from the TIS is obtained by positive ionisation. Then the injection into the tandem is suitable only after a charge exchange (CEC) to obtain negative ions. The production of the radioactive ions were performed by injecting a 13C4+ primary beam of 45MeV/amu on a graphite target up to a beam power of 150W, while the ionisation was achieved by a tungsten positive surface ioniser. The Li+ has been produced at different energies to cross-check the transmission efficiency together with the charge exchange efficiency. The CEC consists of a cell containing Cs vapours which interact with the Li beam converting its charge from +1 to –1 by a two-step reaction; it was already characterized off-line and the results obtained at the EXCYT facility confirm our previous observations and expectations such as the efficiency at the extraction energies and the isotopic shift effect. Hereinafter the results of 8,9Li beams production are reported together with a brief presentation of the facility and with some future improvements and plan. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The EXCYT facility at the INFN-LNS aims to the production of radioactive ion beams to be post-accelerated by a 15 MV Tandem. The primary stable heavy-ion beam (up to 80 MeV/amu, 1 pμA) is supplied by a K-800 Superconducting Cyclotron, which has been operating in a stand-alone mode, by means of the new axial injection beam line, since December, 1999. The magnets of the primary beam line have been aligned and most of the components of the mass separator have been purchased. Different types of Heavy Ion Target–Source (HITS) systems have been built and are here described; in particular, a microwave ion source fully designed and manufactured at LNS has been assembled and successfully tested. Finally, low-intensity beam diagnostics is also ready and reliability tests are under way. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Although many fundamental physics questions are still unanswered, the technology of high-temperature superconductors (HTSs) has become mature for use in wireless communications. In particular, superconducting filters utilizing HTS epitaxial films can provide better interference rejection, full use of the available frequency spectrum, decrease in the noise floor and size and weight reduction in receiver subsystems. A comparison of the microwave properties between films of high-T[sub c] superconductors YBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7-delta] and Tl[sub 2]Ba[sub 2]CaCu[sub 2]O[sub 8] and medium-T[sub c] superconductor Nb[sub 3]Sn is reported. A first prototype of a superconducting bandpass filter designed to handle a high circulating power and spanning the frequency range from 1710 to 1785 MHz is presented.
