Abstract

Experiences and reflection about reading in prison and prison libraries. The book results from a project directed by academic researchers of the University of Playa Ancha and collects texts from Chile and from international experiences. It departs from actions led by the Biblioredes Program of Chile, aimed at establishing a virtuous relation with the quality of life inside the prison and social reinsertion processes.

2. Building Professional Capacity to Strengthen Parent/Professional Relationships in Early Intervention the FAN Approach

Abstract

A strong relationship between parents and professionals is essential to successful early intervention. Yet, programs struggle to engage families in services. This article describes a successful pilot project to strengthen parent/professional relationships for families with children with disabilities living in a high-poverty urban area. Early intervention (EI) providers were trained to use the FAN (Facilitating Attuned Interactions) approach to increase their attunement to parent concerns and capacity to collaborate with parents during early intervention therapy sessions. Over the pilot project, the providers felt more empathic with parents, more collaborative, and more effective and satisfied in their roles. FAN is a promising approach and practical tool to strengthen relationships between parents and professionals in EI.

Abstract

Erikson Institute Fussy Baby Network® (FBN) leaders from around the country have been considering the importance of building trauma-informed service programs. In this article, they discuss ways that the Facilitating Attuned Interaction (FAN) approach and the core processes used by the FAN can be helpful both when trauma is an unexpected presence in a family and when a provider has foreknowledge of serious concerns. The authors present the FAN's theory of change, the FAN "ARC of Engagement," and FAN Core Processes as a framework to assist providers in staying present and attuned in situations where trauma and high risk exist. In addition, they describe the role of the FAN in supporting trauma-informed practice in relationship-based infant/parent programs and in programs that specifically provide trauma treatment.

4. The electrical effect of two commonly used clinical stimulators on traumatic edema in rats

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to determine the effect of electrical stimulation on traumatic rat hind-paw edema and to establish whether there would be a difference in edema reduction when two types of stimulators were used The animals were divided into a control group n = 15) and two experimental groups, one grouP receiving monophasic pulsed current (MPC group, n = 15) and the other grouP receiving symmetrical biphasic pulsed current (SBPC group, n = 14). The right bind-paw volume of all groups was measured prior to traumatization and at 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours posttrauma. Following the 24-, 48-, and 72-hour measurements, 1 hour of electrical stimulation was administered to the experimental groups The control group received sham treatment Results revealed significant edema reduction in all groups over the 96-hour period, with each groups greatest change in Paw volume occuring 48 hours posttrauma. At the final paw volume measurement, there was no significant difference between the MPC and contrOl groups or between the MPC and SBPC groups. The SBPC group, however, showed less reduction in edema than did the control group. One hour of electrical stimulation per day over 3 consecutive days failed to demonstrate significant edema reduction in either the MPC group or the SBPC group as compared with the control group.
