Since the 1990s, analysis of cosmogenic nuclides, primarily 10Be, in quartz-bearing river sand, has allowed for quantitative determination of erosion rates at a basin scale. Paired measurements of in situ cosmogenic 26Al and 10Be in sediment are less common but offers insight into the history of riverine sediment moving down slopes and through drainage basins. Prolonged sediment burial (>105 years), a violation of assumptions underlying erosion rate calculations, is indicated by higher 26Al-based than 10Be-based erosion rates due to preferential loss of shorter-lived 26Al by decay when quartz is shielded from cosmic rays. Here, we use a global compilation of 26Al and 10Be data generated from quartz-bearing fluvial sediment samples (n = 624, including 121 new measurements) and calculate the discordance between erosion rates derived from each nuclide. We test for correlations between such discordance and topographic metrics for drainage basins, allowing us to infer the likelihood of sediment burial during transport in different geomorphic settings. We find that nearly half of samples (n = 276) exhibit discordance (> 1σ uncertainty) between erosion rates derived from 10Be and 26Al, indicating sediment histories that must include extended burial during residence on hillslopes and/or in the fluvial system after or during initial near-surface exposure. Physical basin parameters such as basin area, slope, and tectonic activity exhibit significant correlation with erosion rate discordance whereas climatic parameters have little correlation. Our analysis suggests that 26Al/10Be erosion rate discordance occurs more regularly in basins larger than 1,000 km2, particularly when such basins have low average slopes and are in tectonically quiescent terrains. Sediment sourced from smaller, steeper basins in tectonically active regions is more likely to have similar 10Be and 26Al erosion rates indicative of limited storage and limited burial during residence in the hillslope and fluvial sediment system. The data and analysis we present demonstrate that paired 26Al and 10Be analyses in detrital fluvial samples can provide a window into watershed processes, elucidating landscape behavior at different spatial scales and allowing a deeper understanding of both sediment routing systems and whether erosion rate assumptions are violated. Large lowland basins are more likely to transport detrital sediment that has experienced prolonged sediment storage and burial either on hillslopes and/or in fluvial networks; thus, erosion rates from such basins are lower limits due to nuclide decay during storage. Along a climate gradient in the Chilean coastal mountains, we investigated denudation rates using the meteoric cosmogenic nuclide 10Be and its ratio to stable 9Be, and chemical depletion fractions (CDFs) in bulk soil samples. We find that the fraction of 9Be released from bedrock is a sensitive indicator of weathering, similar to CDF. Meteoric 10Be decreases exponentially with depth, reflecting the reactive nature of this tracer. We also measured denudation rates by the well‐understood in situ cosmogenic 10Be system on quartz. Assuming that both systems record the same denudation rate we calculated the depositional flux of meteoric 10Be for each study site. The flux agrees to that derived from atmospheric models in the mediterranean and humid areas. In contrast, in the arid and semi‐arid areas, the calculated flux agrees with a precipitation‐derived flux, indicating delivery of 10Be to be affected by small‐scale climatic variations not reflected by current atmospheric models. Plain Language Summary: To identify how geologic and climatic conditions control how fast soil is removed from the Earth's surface (denudation), we need to measure these rates over long periods, like thousands of years. A common method makes use of a rare radioactive nuclide, cosmogenic 10Be, formed by cosmic rays in quartz. However, if rocks do not contain quartz, an alternative system is provided by meteoric cosmogenic 10Be precipitated from the atmosphere and stable 9Be that is released during rock weathering. From the ratio 10Be to 9Be we can estimate denudation rates if we know the fraction of 9Be released by weathering and how much meteoric 10Be is deposited from the atmosphere per unit time and area. In a comparison with the quartz‐based method we explored these two unknowns on soil samples from four locations in Chile with different climates, all from granitic rock. We discovered two key points: (a) The amount of stable 9Be indicates soil alteration, which depends on water infiltration. (b) In arid climate, the deposition of meteoric 10Be is limited by rainfall, whereas in areas of sufficient yearly rainfall the 10Be deposition reflects large‐scale atmospheric distribution and is predicted by combined global cosmogenic nuclide production and climate models. The persistence and size of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) through the Pleistocene is uncertain. This is important because reconstructing changes in the GrIS determines its contribution to sea level rise during prior warm climate periods and informs future projections. To understand better the history of Greenland's ice, we analyzed glacial till collected in 1993 from below 3 km of ice at Summit, Greenland. The till contains plant fragments, wood, insect parts, fungi, and cosmogenic nuclides showing that the bed of the GrIS at Summit is a long-lived, stable land surface preserving a record of deposition, exposure, and interglacial ecosystems. In order to complement gaps in the surveillance of solar activity in historical times, various proxies are used to reconstruct past solar cycles and long-term maxima and minima of solar activity, the most famous being the Maunder Minimum (MM), which is usually defined to span the period between the years 1645 and 1715. We explain the problems within existing data bases and call upon trying to find the original sources of Schröder, since his aurorae catalog spans the whole MM and contradicts what has been deduced from more used compilations. We take a critical look at the proposed source-critical scheme introduced by Neuhäuser and Neuhäuser and show it to be counterproductive because it largely ignores the source situation, i.e., the scientific understanding of the reporters of times long past and their intentions. While historical sunspot and aurora reports can be useful to fine-tune our knowledge of solar activity in times before the onset of systematical surveillances, they should not be used as an index of solar activity, since they cannot be quantitatively expressed due to the non-scientific manner of the reports and ambiguous wording. Reconstructions based on cosmogenic isotopes are significantly preferable for establishing the level of solar activity in the past. The isotope abundance of cosmogenic K, especially the ratios of cosmogenic 40K/41K, can be used to determine reliable cosmic-ray exposure (CRE) ages for iron meteorites. Despite this potential, there are only very few studies and essentially no new data since the pioneering work by H. Voshage more than 40 years ago. This shortfall is likely due to the immense analytical difficulties encountered when extracting cosmogenic K from iron meteorites with typical concentrations in the range of a few ppb or below. Chemical extraction procedures are very challenging, resulting in large blank contributions that must be subtracted, and do have low yields preventing an efficient separation of K from the Fe matrix. The K extracted from iron meteorites is dominated by native K (non-cosmogenic K from the sample), includes K from terrestrial contamination, and only a tiny amount is of cosmogenic origin. In order to separate K from iron meteorites a physical extraction technique was developed that involves extraction of K from molten iron meteorites. In this set-up, terrestrial and native K can be partly separated from cosmogenic K by sophisticated pre-heating and extraction techniques. Sample K is ion-optically collected on a rhenium filament. The filaments are then used as evaporation filaments in a double filament set-up of a Triton Plus Thermal-Ionization Mass Spectrometer (TIMS). Though, cosmogenic K is detectable in all samples, the measured isotope ratios are always close to terrestrial, indicating that the majority of the measured 39K and 41K is from K with almost terrestrial isotope composition. The measured 40K signal is dominantly of cosmogenic origin. The K background is either native K from the sample or terrestrial contamination. The measurements are compromised by unstable signals, i.e., by large fluctuations of the ion currents and/or large variations in the isotope ratios during the course of a single run, sometimes even with fractionation reversals. Such difficulties are likely due to the fact that the K ions are implanted into the filament rather than deposited onto the surface. In addition, parts of the filaments are covered with condensed iron, also affecting the signal stability. Despite these analytical challenges, clear cosmogenic signals were detected in almost all studied iron meteorites and cosmogenic 40K/41K ratios could be determined. The Kalahari Basin in southern Africa, shaped by subsidence and epeirogeny, features the Okavango Rift Zone (ORZ) as a significant structural element characterized by diffused extensional deformation forming a prominent depocenter. This study elucidates the Pleistocene landscape evolution of the ORZ by examining the chronology of sediment formation and filling this incipient rift and its surroundings. Modeling of cosmogenic nuclide concentrations in surficial eolian sand from distinct structural blocks around the ORZ provides insights into sand's residence time on the surface. Sand formation occurred from ∼2.2 to 1.1 Ma, coinciding with regional tectonic events. Notably, provenance analyses of sand within ORZ's lowermost block where large alluvial fans are found indicate different source rocks and depositional environments than those of the eolian sands found at a higher elevation. This suggests that the major phase of rift subsidence and the following incision of alluvial systems into the rift occurred after eolian dune formation. Luminescence dating reveals that deposition in alluvial fan settings in the incised landscape began not later than ∼250 ka, and that a lacustrine environment existed since at least ∼140 ka. The established chronological framework constrains the geomorphological effects of the different tectono‐climatic forces that shaped this nascent rifting area. It highlights two pronounced stages of landscape development, with the most recent major deformation event in the evolving rift probably occurring during the middle Pleistocene transition (1.2–0.75 Ma). This event is reflected as a striking change in the depositional environments due to the configurational changes accompanying rift progression. Closed basins within the Great Basin of the western United States were home to numerous lakes during the Pleistocene. One of these paleolakes along the western edge of the Great Basin, Lake Wellington, once filled a 10 × 25‐km expanse of Smith Valley to depths approaching 90 m. This and other lakes that existed during the Pleistocene are generally considered to be pluvial, indicating contemporaneity with either or all a period of cooler climate, increased rainfall and snowmelt, and relatively reduced rates of evaporation as compared to today. Here we combine the results of 36Cl terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide surface exposure dating with soils and geomorphic observations to suggest Lake Wellington was not a pluvial lake but instead the result of a large landslide prior to ~43 ± 15 ka along the West Walker River where it exited Smith Valley. The observations collected also reveal an ancestral course of the West Walker River ~85 m above the current river grade. Attributing the elevation difference to incision caused by active 0.05 ± 0.01 mm a−1 uplift of the underlying Singatse and assuming the ancestral course followed the same path as today places the age of the paleoriver course at ~1.7 Ma. In recent decades, interest in the measurement of 10Be has increased due to its relevance in various fields of science. Trace amounts of 10Be produced from meteoric sources require sensitive accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) measurements and robust sample preparation. The extraction, separation, and preparation of the appropriate oxide form for AMS require extensive and careful laboratory processing and certified reference materials to validate the chemical performance of the protocols used and the calibration of the AMS system in the measurement. In this work, the meteoric 10Be concentrations in two certified reference materials are characterized to establish their suitability as internal control standards for laboratory chemical preparation and AMS measurements of this radioisotope in our laboratory and the whole AMS community. A new full model of the atmospheric transport of cosmogenic 10Be is presented based on the specialized SOCOL‐AERv2‐BE chemistry‐climate model coupled with the CRAC:10Be isotope production model. The model includes all the relevant atmospheric processes and allows computing the isotope concentration at any given location and time. The full model is directly compared with 10Be isotope measurements in five Antarctic and Greenland ice cores for the period 1980–2007. The model reasonably well reproduces the average concentration and solar‐cycle dependency or the lack of it for most observational sites but does not perfectly catch the interannual variability at sites with complex orography likely due to the coarse model grid. This implies that the model correctly reproduces the large‐scale atmospheric dynamics but effectively averages out synoptic‐scale variability. It is found that the dominant source of 10Be is located in the middle stratosphere (25–40 km), in the tropical (<30° latitudes) and polar (>60°) regions, as produced by galactic cosmic rays and solar energetic particles, respectively. It is shown that >60% (90%) of 10Be produced in the atmosphere reaches the Earth's surface within one (two) years, respectively. For practical purposes, a simple parameterization of the full‐model results is presented which agrees with the full model within 20% in polar regions. This parameterization allows one to make a quick estimate of near‐ground 10Be concentrations based only on production rates without heavy calculations. This practical approach can be applied to studies of solar and geomagnetic variability using cosmogenic isotopes. In March, 2019, a trackway of seven footprints was found at a riverbank outcrop of Maniototo Conglomerate Formation in the Kyeburn River, Central Otago, South Island, New Zealand. In this study, we describe this first known occurrence of moa (Dinornithiformes) footprints to be found and recovered in Te Waipounamu/South Island. Footprints of the trackway were ∼46 mm deep, 272–300 mm wide and 260–294 mm in length. An associated separate footprint was 448 mm wide and 285 mm long. Cosmogenic nuclide dating of adjacent overlying beds from the same formation establishes a mean minimum age of burial age for the tracks of 3.57 Ma (+1.62/−1.18 Ma) with a mode of 2.9 Ma, which we interpret to be Late Pliocene, with a conservative age range of Pliocene to Early Pleistocene. The trackway maker is identified as a moa from the Emeidae family, probably from the genus Pachyornis, with a mean mass of 84.61 kg that was travelling at a speed of 2.61 kmh−1. The single adjacent footprint was made by an individual from the family Dinornithidae, most likely from the genus Dinornis with an estimated mass of 158 kg. Reconstructing Pleistocene glaciation timing and extent is vital for understanding paleoclimate. Whereas late Pleistocene glaciation has been studied extensively in western North American mountain ranges, the glacial history of the western Elk Range in Colorado remains understudied, particularly in the East River watershed, a site of intense scientific focus. Here we use cosmogenic nuclide exposure and depth–profile dating methods to determine the timing of glaciation in the East River watershed. We use glacier modeling to reconstruct paleoglacier extents and quantify past climate conditions. Our findings indicate that the East River glacier retreated from its maximum position approximately 17–18 ka, moving to recessional positions between 13 and 15 ka, before experiencing more substantial retreat to high-elevation cirques around 13 ka. Glacier modeling suggests that the maximum ice extents at 17–18 ka could have been sustained by temperature depressions of approximately −6.5°C compared to modern conditions, assuming consistent precipitation. Additionally, the ice position at 13–15 ka could have been supported by temperature depressions of around −4.0°C. These results offer insights into the deglaciation timeline in the East River watershed and broader western Elk Range as well as paleoclimate conditions during the late Pleistocene, which may aid future research on critical zone evolution in the East River watershed. Glaciers reflect integrated climate signals from inter-annual to centennial timescales. In using glacier extent as a climate-change detector, the challenge is to distinguish the roles of the inter-annual climate variability and long-term climatic change on the glacier change. Using cosmogenic nuclide 10Be dating method and glacier dynamical models, this study numerically reconstructed glacier extents at ~ 1850s AD (latest Little Ice Age period) in the Keqiong Qu I, Keqiong Qu II, Taqiong Qu I, and Taqiong Qu II valleys around the Kuoqionggangri peak, southern Tibetan Plateau, and quantified the effects of inter-annual summer temperature variability and long-term summer temperature change on the glacier retreats since then. Without change in mean annual precipitation, the summer temperature decrease of 0.40–0.53 °C from present was required to sustain the glacier lengths at their respective ~ 1850s AD moraines in the four valleys. The climate inferences from the glacier-climate modeling were similar to reconstructions at other glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau and the changes in long term climate reanalysis (HadCRUT5, BEST and NOAA 20CR v3). Forced by the inter-annual variabilities in summer temperature and annual precipitation, the glaciers had excursions of 150–200 m (5–8% of their lengths) from the ~ 1850s AD moraines. Inheritance from prior exposure often complicates the interpretation of terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide (TCN) inventories in glaciated terrain. Lochnagar, a mountain in eastern Scotland, holds a clear geomorphological record of corrie glaciation and the thinning of the last Scottish ice sheet over the last ~15 ka. Yet attempts to date the main stages in deglaciation after sampling of 21 granite boulders for 10Be, 26Al and 14C from corrie moraines, an ice sheet lateral moraine and boulder spreads revealed widespread, but variable, TCN inheritance. Only the youngest boulder ages fit within the range of expected deglaciation ages. To identify the sources of geological uncertainty, we provide simple models of ice cover duration and erosion histories for plateau, corrie and strath landscape domains, identify the variable nuclide inheritance that derives from different sources for boulders in these domains, and outline the effects of rotation, splitting and erosion of boulders during glacial transport. The combined effects increase clustering around arbitrary mean TCN values that exceed deglaciation ages. A further implication is that boulders have survived beneath overriding ice sheets. Such boulder trapping at Lochnagar may have resulted from topographic controls on katabatic winds and surface ablation acting on a thinning, cold‐based ice sheet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dating of moraine deposits can present challenges to standard geochronological methods; terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide (TCN), sediment luminescence and radiocarbon dating may suffer from problems of incomplete resetting (by inheritance, intermittent cover/exposure, transport under unfavourable conditions) and/or a lack of suitable (organic) material. Rock surface luminescence burial dating (RSLBD) offers an alternative approach with considerable potential in dating moraines. In RSLBD, large cobbles/boulders are targeted, rather than smaller grains usually used in luminescence dating. The age limit of RSLBD is much higher than that of radiocarbon dating, and rocks are much more readily available than organic material. In contrast to TCN dating, the effect of exposure prior to deposition can be measured. In this study, we sampled a broad selection of primarily granitic boulders of various sizes and shapes (e.g. different degrees of roundness and sphericity) from the Vimmerby Moraine, a prominent and accessible feature in southern Sweden dated using TCN to 14.4±0.9 ka. Our study was designed to test whether morphological characteristics can be used to discriminate in favour of the most light‐exposed boulders and minimize measurements of non‐exposed boulders. As expected, not all RSLBD ages can be attributed to the same depositional event, but the majority of the resulting ages provide a mean age of 13.0±1.5 ka, consistent with the cosmogenic nuclide dating of the Vimmerby Moraine. Despite the apparently successful TCN study, the luminescence–depth profiles measured in the buried surfaces of the sampled clasts indicate that >50% of these moraine boulders were exposed to light (and cosmic radiation) before final deposition, implying some (presumably small) TCN inheritance; seven of the 16 boulders identified as light exposed were sufficiently bleached to be useful for RSLBD. Quantifying Earth's surface denudation rates is crucial for estimating sediment flux and its role in regulating global climate change. The inability of in-situ cosmogenic 10Be in to quantify denudation rates in quartz–free environment has prompted the need for a new proxy–the ratio of meteoric 10Be met to mineral-weathered 9Be in reactive phase (precipitated in or adsorbed onto secondary minerals). This study utilized 10Be in –26Al in , 10Be met /9Be, and major element analyses of reactive and mineral phases of bedload sediments to infer basin-wide denudation rates and sediment recycling (reworking of deeply buried sediments) in the Three River Source Region (TRSR) of the central Tibetan Plateau. Results from 10Be in -26Al in analysis of bedload sediments and bedrock samples (quartz grain, 250–500 μm) suggest that the sediments underwent burial events since at least 0.54 ± 0.16 million years ago. Combining paleoclimate records in the central Tibetan Plateau, we interpret the "Great Burial" as most likely the result of climate-controlled deglaciation and denudation at the termination of Naynayxungla glaciation during the MIS 13–15 period. This event marks the first widespread deglaciation on the Tibetan Plateau. The 10Be in -26Al in derived paleo–denudation rates range from 4.2 - 0.8 + 0.9 to 151 - 32 + 37 mm/kyr, consistent with previous 10Be in –derived modern denudation rates of 10–117 mm/kyr in TRSR. These rates show a moderate positive correlation with regional topography, particularly channel steepness, indicating a decrease in both relief and denudation rates from lower to upper streams. This spatial discrepancy is likely due to enhanced river headward incision and active neotectonic activities in the southeast. Denudation rates derived from the 10Be met /9Be proxy range from 13 to 248 mm/kyr, alongside a chemical weathering intensity ranging from 43 % to 67 %. These denudation rates are strongly correlated with, but about 1.5 times higher than, the 10Be in –26Al in derived paleo–denudation rates from the same watershed. This suggests that the 10Be met /9Be extracted from fine grains (<64 μm) may reflect a different sediment recycling pattern compared to 10Be in –26Al in in quartz sediments. Alternatively, the 10Be met /9Be ratio could indicate a mixture of carbonate rock with a high denudation rate and silicate rock with a lower denudation rate, whereas 10Be in –26Al in reflects a single silicate denudation signal. The authigenic 10Be/9Be dating method presents a valuable tool for reconstructing depositional chronologies in sedimentary environments, requiring only ubiquitous mud for sampling. Nevertheless, studies elucidating the variability of the 10Be/9Be record preserved in epicontinental successions are lacking, despite the essential nature of such knowledge for the application of authigenic 10Be/9Be in geochronology. In this study, we investigate the variability of measured natural 10Be/9Be ratios in sediment cores recovered from the Holocene Po River delta plain in Northern Italy, aiming to unveil the influence of changing sedimentary environments and provenance on the beryllium isotopic signature. We identified significant variations in the authigenic 10Be/9Be ratios across parasequences, which correlates with a provenance change from the Eastern Alps to the Po River. The observed variation would cause an age offset of ∼1 Myr if unrecognized in a dated succession. Our analysis revealed consistent ratios between the delta plain (primarily represented by swamp) and delta front consisting of proximal prodelta facies, suggesting a prevalent riverine signature in the proximal prodelta, likely maintained by hyperpycnal flow deposition. Statistical assessments based on random sampling and bootstrapping highlighted the importance of a sample size of n > 10. Furthermore, a standard deviation of the observed variability indicates a necessity of an additional 9% uncertainty in authigenic 10Be/9Be dating studies if the sample size is smaller. Overall, our findings emphasize that the normal regressive highstand settings of a deltaic system maintain relatively stable beryllium isotopic fluxes, which are favourable for the authigenic 10Be/9Be dating application, if provenance changes are known.

A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that chromosomal defects are a leading cause of pregnancy loss in women. To study these abnormalities, researchers looked to horses as a potential animal model for miscarriage. They assessed 256 products of conception from mares and found that triploidy, the presence of three sets of haploid chromosomes, was the most common defect. Understanding the influence of bedrock lithology on the catchment‐averaged erosion rates of normal fault‐bounded catchments and the effect that different bedrock erodibilties have on the evolution of transient fluvial geomorphology remain major challenges. To investigate this problem, we collected 18 samples for 10Be and 26Al cosmogenic nuclide analysis to determine catchment‐averaged erosion rates along the well‐constrained Gediz Fault system in western Türkiye, which is experiencing fault‐driven river incision owing to a linkage event ~0.8 Ma and has weak rocks overlying strong rocks in the footwall. Combined with existing cosmogenic data, we show that the background rate of erosion of the pre‐incision landscape can be constrained as <92 mMyr−1, and erosion rates within the transient reach vary from 16 to 1330 mMyr−1. Erosion rates weakly scale with unit stream power, steepness index and slip rate on the bounding fault, although erosion rates are an order of magnitude lower than slip rates. However, there are no clear relationships between erosion rate and relief or catchment slope. Bedrock strength is assessed using Schmidt hammer rebound and Selby Rock Mass Strength Assessments; despite a 30‐fold difference in erodibility, there is no difference in the erosion rate between strong and weak rocks. We argue that, for the Gediz Graben, the strong lithological contrast affects the ability of the river to erode the bed, resulting in a complex erosional response to uplift along the graben boundary fault. Weak covariant trends between erosion rates and various topographic factors potentially result from incomplete sediment mixing or pre‐existing topographic inheritance. Measurements of multiple cosmogenic nuclides in a single sample are valuable for various applications of cosmogenic nuclide exposure dating and allow for correcting exposure ages for surface weathering and erosion and establishing exposure-burial history. Here we provide advances in the measurement of cosmogenic 10Be in pyroxene and constraints on the production rate which provide new opportunities for measurements of multi-nuclide systems, such as 10Be/³He, in pyroxene-bearing samples. We extracted and measured cosmogenic 10Be in pyroxene from two sets of Ferrar Dolerite samples collected from the Transantarctic Mountains in Antarctica. One set of samples has 10Be concentrations close to saturation which allows for the production rate calibration of 10Be in pyroxene by assuming production-erosion equilibrium. The other set of samples, which has a more recent exposure history, is used to determine if a rapid fusion method can be successfully applied to samples with Holocene to Last-Glacial-Maximum exposure ages. From measured 10Be concentrations in the near-saturation sample set we find the production rate of 10Be in pyroxene to be 3.74 +/- 0.10 atoms g-1 yr-1 and is consistent with 10Be/³He paired nuclide ratios from samples assumed to have simple exposure. Given the high 10Be concentration measured in this sample set, a sample mass of ~0.5 g of pyroxene is sufficient for the extraction of cosmogenic 10Be from pyroxene using a rapid fusion method. However, for the set of samples having low 10Be concentrations, measured concentrations were higher than expected. We attribute spuriously high 10Be concentration to potential failure in removing all meteoric 10Be and/or a highly variable and poorly quantified measurement background. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The solar soft X-ray observations from the GOES satellites now span two full Hale cycles and provide one of the best quantitative records of solar activity, with nearly continuous flare records since 1975. We present a uniform new reduction of the entire time series for 1975 to 2022 at NOAA class C1 level or above, to characterize the occurrence distribution function (ODF) of the flares observed in the 1 – 8 Å spectral band. The analysis includes estimates of the peak fluxes of the 12 flares that saturated in the 1 – 8 Å time series. In contrast to the standard NOAA classifications, these new estimates use the full time resolution of the sampling and have a preflare background level subtracted for all events. Our new estimates include NOAA's latest calibrations for the GOES-1 through GOES-15 data covering 1975 – 2016. For each of the 12 saturated events we have made new estimates of peak fluxes based on fits to the rise and fall of the flare time profile, and have validated our extrapolation schemes by comparing with artificially truncated but unsaturated X10-class events. In this new estimation, SOL2003-11-04 (the most energetic unambiguously observed event) has a peak flux of 4.32 × 10 − 3 W / m 2 . This corresponds to X43 on the new scale, or X30 on the old scale. We provide a list in the Appendix for peak fluxes of all 37 events above 10 − 3 W / m 2 , the GOES X10 level, including the 12 saturated events. The full list now gives us a first complete sample from which we obtain an occurrence distribution function (ODF) for peak energy flux S , often represented as a power-law d F / d E ∝ E − α , for which we find α = 1.973 ± 0.014 in the range M1 to X3. The power-law description fails at the high end, requiring a downward break in the ODF above the X10 level. We give a tapered power-law description of the resulting CCDF (complementary cumulative distribution function) and extrapolate it into the domain of "superflares," i.e., flares with bolometric energies > 10 33 erg . Extrapolation of this fit provides estimates of 100-yr and 1000-yr GOES peak fluxes that agree reasonably well with other such estimates using different data sets and methodology, although there is some tension between our 10,000-yr (the Holocene time-scale) estimate and the GOES class obtained for the out-sized 774 AD solar proton event as inferred from cosmogenic nuclide records. Located in the easternmost portion of the Central Apennines, the Mt. Morrone normal fault system is one of the highest seismic hazards in Italy. Previous geological and geomorphological observations revealed the presence of a ∼22 km‐long NW‐SE right‐lateral en echelon fault system made of two parallel faults affecting Quaternary deposits. Our analysis focused on the westernmost fault, which bounds the Sulmona Basin. Cumulative offsets were identified and quantified using high‐resolution Digital Elevation Models derived from LiDAR, Satellite Pleiades images, and drone acquisition at the three sites. Morphological markers displaced from a few to tens of meters were dated using 36Cl exposure dating. The results would be suggesting a fault slip rate of 0.2–0.4 mm/a. The deformed markers that dated at 36–44 ka consist of alluvial terraces emplaced by the main streams flowing down from Mt. Morrone to the Sulmona Basin, subsequently incised, and preserved when the fluvial base level dropped because of the former Sulmona lake fluctuations. The yielded ages for these markers fit well with the last major aggradational event associated with the 35–40 ka Heinrich event described and dated to other fluvial basins in the Apennines. Furthermore, the estimated rate agrees with the values obtained in previous studies over shorter and longer periods (105−6 years) and within similar uncertainties. The nucleosynthetic Cr isotope anomalies provides useful information to trace the source and origin of extraterrestrial samples, but it is usually influenced by high‐energy cosmic rays, and evaluating such effect of cosmic rays in lunar samples is especially important. Those cosmic radiation particles (primary particles) can react with lunar materials, creating many secondary particles. Both primary and secondary particles can produce cosmogenic nuclides on the Moon. Radiation Environment and Dose at the Moon (REDMoon) is a novel GEANT4 Monte‐Carlo model built to simulate the interactions of space particles with the lunar surface and subsurface content. Using this model, we simulate the production of cosmogenic Cr isotopes (50Cr, 52Cr, 53Cr, 54Cr) at different depths of lunar surface, and compare the contribution of different reactions generating these nuclides. The results suggest that spallation reactions are the most important process producing cosmogenic Cr isotopes. We also analyze the relationship between 53Cr/52Cr and 54Cr/52Cr predicted by our model and compare it with different Apollo samples. As previously studied, we also find an approximate linear relationship between ɛ53Cr and ɛ54Cr, where ɛ53Cr (or ɛ54Cr) is the relative deviation from the standard 53Cr/52Cr ratio (or 54Cr/52Cr ratio), normalized to 1/10,000. Furthermore, we reveal a change of this linear relationship in different depths of lunar surface. Besides, we investigate how the slopes can be influenced by exposure age and the Fe/Cr ratio. With these additional factors carefully considered, the comparison between our modeled results and the measurements is better than previous studies. Plain Language Summary: Cosmic rays arriving at the Moon can change the isotopic compositions on the lunar surface including chromium isotopes which can be used to constrain the evolution history of the Moon. Here, we use the particle transport model to simulate the high‐energy particles and the chromium isotopes generated in the lunar material by different cosmic ray sources. We compare different processes producing cosmogenic Cr isotopes and suggest that the spallation reactions play the main role. After taking the effect of solar energetic particles and the decay of cosmogenic 53Mn into consideration, we reach a better agreement between our model prediction and the Apollo lunar samples about the relationship between ɛ53Cr and ɛ54Cr. Accurate volcanic hazard assessments rely on a detailed understanding of the timing of past eruptions. While radiometric methods like 40Ar/39Ar or K/Ar are by far the most conventional lava flow dating tools, their low resolution for young (<20 ka) deposits interferes with the development of precise recent effusive chronologies on most volcanoes. Mt. Ruapehu (New Zealand) has produced many lava flows throughout its history, but the precise timing of many recent eruptions remains largely unknown. In this study, we use cosmogenic 3He exposure dating to provide 23 eruption ages of young lava flows at Ruapehu. We then compare our results with existing 40Ar/39Ar and palaeomagnetic constraints, highlighting the value of cosmogenic nuclides exposure dating in refining recent eruptive chronologies. Of the 23 sampled flows, 16 provided robust eruption ages (5–20 % internal 2σ; n≥3) between ca 20 and 8 ka, except for one lava erupted at around 43 ka, and their age distribution indicates that, during the last 20 thousand years, effusive activity at Ruapehu peaked at 17–12 ka and at 9–7.5 ka. Nearly identical eruption ages of lavas located in different flanks of the volcanic edifice suggest concurrent activity from multiple vents during relatively short time intervals (0–2 kyr) at around 13, 10 and 8 ka. We analysed four lavas previously dated by 40Ar/39Ar, two of which yielded eruption ages older than the older limit of the 2σ interval of the radiometric dates, but the good clustering of individual samples from our sites suggests that our results better represent these lava flows' real eruption ages. Our 3He-based dates show excellent agreement with palaeomagnetic constraints, suggesting that production rate uncertainties are unlikely to impact the accuracy of our eruption ages. This study demonstrates how cosmogenic nuclides dating can provide greater detail on the recent effusive chronology of statovolcanoes, helping to resolve the low resolution and difficulty in applying radiometric dating methods to young lava flows. Moraine complexes formed by multiple glaciations are well-preserved in the Mount Geladandong area, the largest center of current glaciation in the Tanggula Mountains in western China. Studies of these glacial landforms provide insights into past glacier changes and contribute to understanding palaeoclimate and palaeoenvironment in the central Tibetan Plateau (TP). Here we report on 10Be surface exposure dating of thirteen rock samples collected from a sequence of glacial landforms associated with the Gangjiaquba Glacier. Based on the dating results, historical records (topographical maps) and morphological relationships, clear Little Ice Age (LIA) landforms are identified, and other landforms are tentatively assigned Neoglacial and global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM G) ages. Dating results for samples from modern glacial landforms demonstrate that the boulders were not affected by nuclide inheritance, and that 10Be surface exposure dating may be used to constrain glacier fluctuations during the past century in high-altitude areas that have high 10Be production rates. A comparison of the ages of a glacially polished surface and adjacent glacial deposits indicates that subglacial erosion by abrasion of the rock surface was insufficient to remove cosmogenic nuclide inventories. Thus the apparent exposure age on the polished surface includes inheritance and over-estimates the actual age for the exposure of this surface. Samples from hummocky moraine have wide age spreads, indicating long-lasting surface instability after deposition of this landform. Successive reduction in glacial extent in the Mount Geladandong area since the LGM G reflects temperature and precipitation changes over this timeframe in the central TP, with climate forcing for glacial advances correlated with cooling signals in the North Atlantic that may have been transmitted to this area by the westerlies. The erosion of rocky coasts contributes to global cycles of elements over geological times and also constitutes a major hazard that may potentially increase in the future. Yet, it remains a challenge to quantify rocky coast retreat rates over millennia; a time span that encompasses the stochasticity of the processes involved. Specifically, there are no available methods that can be used to quantify slow coastal erosion (< 1 cm yr-1) averaged over millennia. Here, we use the 10Be concentration in colluvium, corresponding to the by-product of aerial rocky coast erosion, to quantify the local coastal retreat rate averaged over millennia. We test this approach along the Mediterranean coast of the Eastern Pyrenees (n=8) and the desert coast in Southern Peru (n=3). We observe a consistent relationship between the inferred erosion rates, the geomorphic and climatic contexts. The retreat rates are similar, 0.3–0.5 mm yr-1 for five samples taken on the Mediterranean coast, whereas one sample located on a cape and two samples from a vegetated colluvium have a lower rate of ~0.1 mm yr-1. The coastal retreat rate of the drier Peruvian coast is slower at 0.05 mm yr-1. Although the integration periods of these erosion rates may encompass pre-Holocene times, during which the sea-level and thus the retreat rate were much lower, we conclude here that the associated bias on the inferred retreat rate is less than 80 %. We anticipate that this new method of quantifying slow rocky coastal erosion will fill a major gap in the coastal erosion database and improve our understanding of both coastal erosion factors and hazards. How tectonic forcing, expressed as base level change, is encoded in the stratigraphic and geomorphic records of coupled source-to-sink systems remains uncertain. Using sedimentological, geochronological and geomorphic approaches, we describe the relationship between transient topographic change and sediment deposition for a low-storage system forced by rapid rock uplift. We present five new luminescence ages and two terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide paleo-erosion rates for the late Pleistocene Pagliara fan-delta complex and we model corresponding base level fall history and erosion of the source catchment located on the Ionian flank of the Peloritani Mountains (NE-Sicily, Italy). The Pagliara delta complex is part of the broader Messina Gravel-and-Sands lithostratigraphic unit that outcrops along the Peloritani coastal belt as extensional basins have been recently inverted by both normal faults and regional uplift at the Messina Straits. The deltas exposed at the mouth of the Pagliara River have constructional tops at ca. 300 m a.s.l. and onlap steeply east-dipping bedrock at the coast to thickness between ca. 100 and 200 m. Five infrared-stimulated luminescence (IRSL) ages collected from the delta range in age from ca. 327 to 208 ka and indicate a vertical long-term sediment accumulation rate as rapid as ca. 2.2 cm/yr during MIS 7. Two cosmogenic 10Be concentrations measured in samples of delta sediment indicate paleo-erosion rates during MIS 8-7 near or slightly higher than the modern rates of ca. 1 mm/yr. Linear inversion of Pagliara fluvial topography indicates an unsteady base level fall history in phase with eustasy that is superimposed on a longer, tectonically driven trend that doubled in rate from ca. 0.95 to 1.8 mm/yr in the past 150 ky. The combination of footwall uplift rate and eustasy determines the accommodation space history to trap the fan-deltas at the Peloritani coast in hanging wall basins, which are now inverted, uplifted and exposed hundreds of metres above the sea level. The open solar flux (OSF) is the integrated unsigned magnetic flux leaving the top of the solar atmosphere to form the heliospheric magnetic field. As the OSF modulates the intensity of galactic cosmic rays at Earth, the production rate of cosmogenic isotopes – such as 14C and 10Be stored in tree rings and ice sheets – is closely related to the OSF. Thus on the basis of cosmogenic isotope data, OSF can be reconstructed over millennia. As sunspots are related to the production of OSF, this provides the possibility of reconstructing sunspot number (SSN) and hence properties of the solar cycles prior to the first sunspot telescopic observations in 1610. However, while models exist for estimating OSF on the basis of SSN, the hysteresis present in OSF and the lack of a priori knowledge of the start/end dates of individual solar cycles means that directly inverting these models is not possible. We here describe a new method that uses a forward model of OSF to estimate SSN and solar cycle start/end dates through a Monte Carlo approach. The method is tested by application to geomagnetic reconstructions of OSF over the period 1845-present, and compared to the known SSN record for this period. There is a substantial improvement in reconstruction of both the SSN time series and the solar cycle start/end dates compared with existing OSF-SSN regression methods. This suggests that more accurate solar-cycle information can be extracted from cosmogenic isotope records by forward modelling, and also provides a means to assess the level of agreement between independent SSN and OSF reconstructions. We find the geomagnetic OSF and observed SSN agree very well after 1875, but do differ during the early part of the geomagnetic record, though still agree within the larger observational uncertainties. To further elucidate the Late Pleistocene glacial history of mid-elevation mountainous regions in Central Europe, 10Be cosmic-ray exposure (CRE) dating was applied to moraines in the Zastler Tal Valley in the Southern Black Forest. Periods of glacier recession from moraines in this valley began no later than 16 ka, 15 ka, and 13 ka. CRE ages of moraines in this and other parts of the Southern Black Forest cluster around 17–16 ka and 15–14 ka, thus suggesting a common forcing of glacier recession. Equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs) during moraine formation were calculated for precipitation reconstruction. Observed spatial discrepancies in ELAs at ca. 15–14 ka are explained best by the size of snow-contributing areas. The reconstructed annual precipitation at the ELA for ca. 16 ka and ca. 15 ka is affected by large uncertainties, representing a wide range from ~50% to ~150% of present-day values. Due to various factors, such as drifting snow, the lower bounds of the estimates appear most realistic, thus concurring with the common hypothesis of less precipitation during the last glacial termination than today in Central Europe. Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) interact with matter in the atmosphere and at the surface of the Earth to produce a range of cosmogenic nuclides. Measurements of cosmogenic nuclides produced in surface rocks have been used to study past land ice extent as well as to estimate erosion rates. Because the GCR flux reaching the Earth is modulated by magnetic fields (solar and Earth's), records of cosmogenic nuclides produced in the atmosphere have also been used for studies of past solar activity. Studies utilizing cosmogenic nuclides assume that the GCR flux is constant in time, but this assumption may be uncertain by 30 % or more. Here we propose that measurements of 14C of carbon monoxide (14CO) in ice cores at low-accumulation sites can be used as a proxy for variations in GCR flux on timescales of several thousand years. At low-accumulation ice core sites, 14CO in ice below the firn zone originates almost entirely from in situ cosmogenic production by deep-penetrating secondary cosmic ray muons. The flux of such muons is insensitive to solar and geomagnetic variations, and depends only on the primary GCR flux intensity. We use an empirically-constrained model of in situ cosmogenic 14CO production in ice in combination with a statistical analysis to explore the sensitivity of ice core 14CO measurements at Dome C, Antarctica to variations in the GCR flux over the past ≈7000 years. We find that Dome C 14CO measurements would be able to detect a linear change of 4 %, a step increase of 4 % or a transient 100-year spike of 250 % at the 3 σ significance level. The ice core 14CO proxy therefore appears promising for the purpose of providing a high-precision test of the assumption of GCR flux constancy over the Holocene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Volcanic arcs are chemical weathering hotspots that may contribute disproportionately to global CO2 consumption through silicate weathering. Accurately modeling the impact of volcanic‐arc landscapes on the Earth's long‐term carbon cycle requires understanding how climate and physical erosion control weathering fluxes from arc landscapes. We evaluate these controls by examining the covariation of stream solutes, sediment geochemistry, and long‐term physical erosion fluxes inferred from cosmogenic 36Cl in magnetite in volcanic watersheds in Puerto Rico that span a ca. 15‐fold gradient in specific discharge. Analysis of this data using power‐law relationships demonstrates that CO2 consumption from arc‐rock weathering in the humid tropics is more strongly limited by physical erosion and the supply of primary minerals to the weathering zone than by temperature or the flux of fresh, chemically reactive waters through the critical zone. However, a positive correlation between long‐term physical erosion fluxes and specific discharge is also observed. This indicates that fresh mineral supply in arc environments may ultimately depend on precipitation rates, which may maintain a coupling between arc‐rock weathering fluxes and climate under principally supply limited weathering conditions.

The data on the content of the 10Be cosmogenic isotope in the GISP2 Greenland ice core are presented. The reconstruction of the heliospheric modulation potential (HMP) was carried out for 6000–1348 BC. A systematic decrease in the HMP over this time interval was found, which corresponds to a decrease in global surface temperature after 3000 BC and a decrease in the HMP obtained from radiocarbon data in previous studies. The depth profiles of cosmogenic isotopes in the lunar regolith depend on the flux and spectrum of Galactic and solar cosmic rays (GCRs and SCRs) and, therefore, depend on solar activity on a time scale comparable to the lifetime of these isotopes. In this work, we analyzed the content of various radionuclides (14C, 26Al, 10Be, and 53Mn) in samples obtained by the Apollo 15 mission. Comparing the results of modeling performed for the average GCR flow using the GEANT4.10 package with experimental data, we obtained a correction factor for the calculated formation rates of Y0 ~ 0.6 for all the considered radionuclides. We attribute this result to the overestimated value of the flux of secondary particles in the lunar soil in the calculation using the GEANT4.10 package. This conclusion is supported by independent laboratory experiments. The estimated 10Be depth profile can be consistent with the experimental data only if the additional (apart from the GCR) contribution of protons accelerated on the shock wave from a nearby supernova ~2.5 million years ago is taken into account. We also calculated the 53Mn depth profile (with the longest half-life of those we considered), which can also be described taking the contribution of the supernova into account. We note that three long-lived isotopes, 26Al, 10Be, and 53Mn, with different half-lives were modeled with the same average modulation potential. Successions deposited under rifting and post-rift settings of an isolated epicontinental basin often exhibit contrasting characteristics. Facies linked to transgression during basin rifting are typically locally sourced fan deltas transporting coarse-grained sediment, whereas the post-rift setup generally involves a normal regression marked by more extensive catchments, sediment sourced from greater distances, and an overall decrease in average grain size compared to the transgressive facies. In this study, we present a specific scenario based on a sedimentological, stratigraphic, and authigenic 10Be/9Be analysis of the Nemčiňany Formation, an Upper Miocene fan deltaic succession in the eastern Danube Basin, Slovakia. Deposition of the Nemčiňany Fm. was initiated shortly after ~11.6 Ma by the fourth rifting phase of the Pannonian Basin System, triggering the transgression of Lake Pannon. The depositional system persisted until ~9.6 Ma, likely balancing the increased accommodation rate with sediment supply in the shallow lake area situated on a basement high. Subsequently, a relative decrease in the accommodation rate prompted the progradation of shelf-slope scale clinoforms, originating from the Nemčiňany depositional system, toward the center of the Komjatice depression at ~9.4 Ma, resulting in a normal regression of Lake Pannon. The persistence of the Nemčiňany fan delta system, unlike common stratigraphic patterns, was associated to the high sediment supply yielded by the paleo-Hron river, which entered the basin in the study area. The Sun is magnetically active and often produces eruptive events on different energetic and temporal scales. Until recently, the upper limit of such events was unknown and believed to be roughly represented by direct instrumental observations. However, two types of extreme events were discovered recently: extreme solar energetic particle events on the multi-millennial time scale and super-flares on sun-like stars. Both discoveries imply that the Sun might rarely produce events, called extreme solar events (ESE), whose energy could be orders of magnitude greater than anything we have observed during recent decades. During the years following these discoveries, great progress has been achieved in collecting observational evidence, uncovering new events, making statistical analyses, and developing theoretical modelling. The ESE paradigm lives and is being developed. On the other hand, many outstanding questions still remain open and new ones emerge. Here we present an overview of the current state of the art and the forming paradigm of ESE from different points of view: solar physics, stellar–solar projections, cosmogenic-isotope data, modelling, historical data, as well as terrestrial, technological and societal effects of ESEs. Special focus is paid to open questions and further developments. This review is based on the joint work of the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) team #510 (2020–2022). Geomorphological records of past ice sheet change offer the opportunity to examine their centennial‐scale response to changing boundary conditions, which are not adequately captured in the satellite record. Here, we present the first reconstruction of ice surface lowering at Byrd Glacier, the largest outlet glacier of the Transantarctic Mountains. Using surface exposure ages from glacial erratic cobbles collected in two vertical transects along the Lonewolf Nunataks, we find the initial emergence of this set of nunataks occurred at ~15 ka, with a rapid pulse of thinning at ~8 ka. We compare our glacier thinning profiles with modelled ice sheet thickness and grounding line histories from two model ensembles to identify key processes responsible for ice sheet change. All model runs from the two ensembles predict grounding line retreat and inland thinning to occur in one rapid step from Last Glacial Maximum to present, in line with marine geology records, our exposure age data and derived glacier thinning rates. Experiments best matching the glacial thickness constraints, reconstructed from the surface exposure data, have faster basal sliding (i.e., promote greater sliding rates resulting in thinner ice). However, experiments best matching the timing and rapid rate of ice thinning derived from the same surface exposure data have higher basal friction. This apparent change in the modelled basal sliding regime, from when the ice surface is at maximum thickness, to the rapid thinning at ~8 ka, occurs as the grounding line retreats towards the Byrd Glacier and Ross Ice Shelf forms during the Holocene. This past context has implications for the stability of the modern grounding line of Byrd Glacier, which is characterised by high basal melt rates at the terminus—a process that has the potential to propagate glacier thinning far inland, impacting the overall (in)stability of the Byrd Glacier and Ross Ice Shelf. The Himalayan orogen exports millions of tons of sediment annually to the Indo‐Gangetic foreland basin, derived from both hinterland and foreland fold‐thrust belts (FTB). Although erosion rates in the hinterland are well‐constrained, erosion rates in the foreland FTB and, by extension, the sediment flux have remained poorly constrained. Here, we quantified erosion rates and sediment flux from the Mohand Range in the northwestern Himalaya by modeling and measuring the cosmogenic radionuclide (CRN) 10Be and 26Al concentrations in modern fluvial sediments. Our model uses local geological and geophysical constraints and accounts for CRN inheritance and sediment recycling, which enables us to determine the relative contributions of the hinterland and foreland FTB sources to the CRN budget of the proximal foreland deposits. Our model predictions closely match measured concentrations for a crustal shortening rate across the Mohand Range of 8.0 ± 0.5 mm yr−1 (i.e., approximately 50% of the total shortening across the Himalaya at this longitude) since 0.75−0.06+0.02 $0.7{5}_{-0.06}^{+0.02}$ Ma. This shortening implies a spatial gradient in erosion rates ranging from 0.42 ± 0.03 to 4.92 ± 0.34 mm yr−1, controlled by the geometry of the underlying structure. This erosion pattern corresponds to an annual sediment recycling of ∼2.0 megatons from the Mohand Range to the downstream Yamuna foreland. Converted to sediment fluxes per unit width along the Himalaya, the foreland FTB accounts for ∼21% ± 5% of the total flux entering the foreland. Because these sediments have lower 10Be concentrations than hinterland‐derived sediment, they would lead to ∼14% overestimation of 10Be‐derived erosion rates, based on Yamuna sediments in the proximal foreland. However, they are challenging to apply when sediment remains temporarily stored for millions of years before being re‐eroded. We call this sediment recycling. We quantified sediment recycling in the Mohand Range, at the foothills of the northwestern Himalaya, based on the present‐day 10Be concentration in fluvial sediments recycled from tectonically uplifted older foreland deposits. We do this by modeling how the 10Be concentrations change as sediment is first eroded in the Himalayan source region, then deposited in the foreland, and finally eroded again. By comparing modeled and measured concentrations, we find that erosion rates in the Mohand Range vary from 0.42 ± 0.03 to 4.92 ± 0.34 mm yr−1, corresponding to about 2.0 megatons of sediment recycling from this range to the downstream Yamuna foreland. Because the 10Be concentration in recycled sediment is lower than that in sediment eroded from the high Himalaya, admixing high Himalayan sediments with recycled material may result in erosion rates that are higher than the actual erosion rates in the high Himalaya. Elevated Plio-Pleistocene coastal and marine markers in stable continental regions are commonly explained by a combination of eustatic sea-level variations and regional geodynamics (e.g., mantle dynamics, active faults). In this study, we test the role of erosion rates on the Late Pleistocene uplift and landform evolution of the Armorican Massif, western France. Denudation rates are estimated for 19 drainage basins using terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide (10Be) measurements in quartz. They range between 3 and 34 m.Ma-1, with a factor of two difference between the western highland region and the central lowland region (16 ± 8 m.Ma-1 vs. 9 ± 6 m.Ma-1). Assuming a thin elastic plate model, the lithosphere flexural isostatic response to these denudation rates produces an overall uplift of the Armorican Peninsula from 12 – 15 m.Ma-1 in the central lowland region to 4 – 10 m.Ma-1 in the western peninsula and along the coastline. We show that these erosion-driven uplift rates can explain the uplifted Late Pleistocene marine terraces along the Armorican Peninsula coastline as well as the elevated Quaternary marine deposits in the central lowland region, without necessitating additional geodynamic processes such as regional compression or local active faults. Our results suggest that, in stable continental regions, long-term erosion should be taken into account as a driver of uplift and deformation before trying to derive global or regional geodynamic or tectonic conclusions. Magnetic fields generated in the Sun's interior by the dynamo mechanism drive solar activity over a range of time-scales. Direct sunspot observations exist for a few centuries; reconstructed variations based on cosmogenic isotopes in the solar open flux and cosmic ray flux exist over thousands of years. While such reconstructions indicate the presence of extreme solar activity fluctuations in the past, causal links between millennia scale dynamo activity, consequent coronal field, solar wind, open flux and cosmic ray flux variations remain elusive; a lack of coronal field observations compounds this issue. By utilizing a stochastically forced solar dynamo model and potential field source surface extrapolation, we perform long-term simulations to illuminate how dynamo generated magnetic fields govern the structure of the solar corona and the state of the heliosphere – as indicated by variations in the open flux and cosmic ray modulation potential. We establish differences in the nature of the large-scale structuring of the solar corona during grand maximum, minimum, and regular solar activity phases and simulate how the open flux and cosmic ray modulation potential vary across these different phases of activity. We demonstrate that the power spectrum of simulated and observationally reconstructed solar open flux time series are consistent with each other. Our study provides the theoretical foundation for interpreting long-term solar cycle variations inferred from cosmogenic isotope based reconstructions and establishes causality between solar internal variations to the forcing of the state of the heliosphere. The measurement of cosmogenic nuclide (CN) concentrations in riverine sediment has provided breakthroughs in our understanding of landscape evolution. Yet, linking this detrital CN signal and relief evolution is based on hypotheses that are not easy to verify in the field. Models can be used to explore the statistics of CN concentrations in sediment grains. In this work, we present a coupling between the landscape evolution model Cidre and a model of the CN concentration in distinct grains. These grains are exhumed and detached from the bedrock and then transported in the sediment to the catchment outlet with temporary burials and travel according to the erosion–deposition rates calculated spatially in Cidre. The concentrations of various CNs can be tracked in these grains. Because the CN concentrations are calculated in a limited number of grains, they provide an approximation of the whole CN flux. Therefore, this approach is limited by the number of grains that can be handled in a reasonable computing time. Conversely, it becomes possible to record part of the variability in the erosion–deposition processes by tracking the CN concentrations in distinct grains using a Lagrangian approach. We illustrate the robustness and limitations of this approach by deriving the catchment-average erosion rates from the mean 10Be concentration of grains leaving a synthetic catchment and comparing them with the erosion rates calculated from sediment flux, for different uplift scenarios. We show that the catchment-average erosion rates are approximated to within 5 % uncertainty in most of the cases with a limited number of grains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil and sediment mixing and associated permafrost processes are not widely studied or understood in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. In this study, we investigate the stability and depositional history of near-surface permafrost sediments to ∼ 3 m depth in the Pearse and lower Wright valleys using measured cosmogenic 10 Be and 26 Al depth profiles. In Pearse Valley, we estimate a minimum depositional age of ∼ 74 ka for the active layer and paleoactive-layer sediments (< 0.65 m). Combined depth profile modelling of 10 Be and 26 Al gives a depositional age for near-surface (< 1.65 m) permafrost in Pearse Valley of 180 +20/-40 ka, implying that the deposition of permafrost sediments predates MIS 5 advances of Taylor Glacier. Deeper permafrost sediments (> 2.09 m) in Pearse Valley are thus inferred to have a depositional age of > 180 ka. At a coastal, lower-elevation site in neighbouring lower Wright Valley, 10 Be and 26 Al depth profiles from a second permafrost core exhibit near-constant concentrations with depth and indicate the sediments are either vertically mixed after deposition or sufficiently young so that post-depositional nuclide production is negligible relative to inheritance. 26Al/10Be concentration ratios for both depth profiles range between 4.0 and 5.2 and are all lower than the nominal surface production rate ratio of 6.75, indicating that prior to deposition, these sediments experienced complex, yet similar, exposure–burial histories. Assuming a single-cycle exposure–burial scenario, the observed 26Al/10Be ratios are equivalent to a total minimum exposure–burial history of ∼ 1.2 Myr. In proximity to the depth profile core site, we measured cosmogenic 10 Be and 26 Al in three granite cobbles from thin, patchy drift (Taylor 2 Drift) in Pearse Valley to constrain the timing of retreat of Taylor Glacier. Assuming simple continuous exposure, our minimum, zero-erosion exposure ages suggest Taylor Glacier partially retreated from Pearse Valley no later than 65–74 ka. The timing of retreat after 65 ka and until the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) when Taylor Glacier was at a minimum position remains unresolved. The surface cobble ages and permafrost processes reveal Taylor Glacier advances during MIS 5 were non-erosive or mildly erosive, preserving the underlying permafrost sediments and peppering boulders and cobbles upon an older, relict surface. Our results are consistent with U/Th ages from central Taylor Valley and suggest changes in moisture delivery over Taylor Dome during MIS 5e, 5c, and 5a appear to be associated with the extent of the Ross Ice Shelf and sea ice in the Ross Sea. These data provide further evidence of antiphase behaviour through retreat of a peripheral lobe of Taylor Glacier in Pearse Valley, a region that was glaciated during MIS 5. We suggest a causal relationship of cold-based glacier advance and retreat that is controlled by an increase in moisture availability during retreat of sea ice and perhaps the Ross Ice Shelf, as well as, conversely, a decrease during times of sea ice and Ross Ice Shelf expansion in the Ross Sea. Rockwall erosion in high-alpine glacial environments varies both temporally and spatially. Where rockwalls flank glaciers, changes in debris supply and supraglacial cover will modify ice ablation. Yet, quantifying spatiotemporal patterns in erosion across deglaciating rockwalls is not trivial. At five nearby valley glaciers around Pigne d'Arolla in Switzerland, we derived apparent rockwall erosion rates using 10 Be cosmogenic nuclide concentrations ([ 10 Be]) in medial moraine debris. Systematic downglacier sampling of six medial moraines that receive debris from rockwalls with differing orientation, slope, and deglaciation histories enabled us to assess rockwall erosion through time and to investigate how distinct spatial source rockwall morphology may express itself in medial moraine [ 10 Be] records. Our dataset combines 24 new samples from medial moraines of Glacier du Brenay, Glacier de Cheilon, Glacier de Pièce, and Glacier de Tsijiore Nouve with 15 published samples from Glacier d'Otemma. For each sample, we simulated the glacial debris transport using a simple debris particle trajectory model to approximate the time of debris erosion and to correct the measured [ 10 Be] for post-depositional 10 Be accumulation. Our derived apparent rockwall erosion rates range between ∼ 0.6 and 10.0 mm yr -1. Whereas the longest downglacier [ 10 Be] record presumably reaches back to the end of the Little Ice Age and suggests a systematic increase in rockwall erosion rates over the last ∼ 200 years, the shorter records only cover the last ∼ 100 years from the recent deglaciation period and indicate temporally more stable erosion rates. For the estimated time of debris erosion, ice cover changes across most source rockwalls were small, suggesting that our records are largely unaffected by the contribution of recently deglaciated bedrock of possibly different [ 10 Be], but admixture of subglacially derived debris cannot be excluded at every site. Comparing our sites suggests that apparent rockwall erosion rates are higher where rockwalls are steep and north-facing, indicating a potential slope and temperature control on rockwall erosion around Pigne d'Arolla. We report light noble gas (He, Ne, and Ar) concentrations and isotopic ratios in 11 achondrites, Tafassasset (unclassified primitive achondrite), Northwest Africa (NWA) 12934 (angrite), NWA 12573 (brachinite), Jiddat al Harasis (JaH) 809 (ureilite), NWA 11562 (ungrouped achondrite), four lodranites (NWA 11901, NWA 7474, NWA 6685, and NWA 6484), NWA 2871 (acapulcoite), and Sahara 02029 (winonaite), most of which have not been previously studied for noble gases. We discuss their noble gas isotopic composition, determine their cosmogenic nuclide content, and systematically calculate their cosmic ray exposure (CRE) and gas retention ages. In addition, we estimate their preatmospheric radii and preatmospheric masses based on the shielding parameter (22Ne/21Ne)cos. None of the studied meteorites shows evidence of contribution from solar cosmic rays (SCRs). JaH 809 and NWA 12934 show evidence of 3He diffusive losses of >90% and 40%, respectively. The winonaite Sahara 02029 has lost most of its noble gases, either during or before analysis. The average CRE age of Tafassasset of ~49 Ma is lower than that reported by Patzer et al. (2003), but is consistent with it within the uncertainties; this confirms that Tafassasset and CR chondrites are not source paired, CR chondrites having CRE ages from 1 to 25 Ma (Herzog & Caffee, 2014). The ureilite JaH 809 has a CRE age of ~5.4 Ma, which falls into the typical range of exposure ages for ureilites; the angrite NWA 12934 has a CRE age of ~49 Ma, which is within the main range of exposure ages reported for angrites (0.2–56 Ma). We calculate a CRE age of ~2.4 Ma for the brachinite NWA 12573, which falls into a possible "cluster" in the brachinite CRE age histogram around ~3 Ma. Three lodranites (NWA 11901, NWA 7474, and NWA 6685) have CRE ages higher than the average CRE ages of lodranites measured so far, NWA 11901 and NWA 6685 having CRE ages far higher than the CRE age already reported by Li et al. (2019) on NWA 8118. The measured 40K‐40Ar gas retention ages fit well into established systematics. The gas retention age of Tafassasset is consistent, within respective uncertainties, with that previously calculated by Patzer et al. (2003). Our study indicates that Tafassasset originates from a meteoroid with a preatmospheric radius of ~20 cm, however discordant with the radius of ~85 cm inferred in a previous study (Patzer et al., 2003). We present a model for the calculation of the production rates of cosmogenic nuclides in extraterrestrial material. The model is based on the Monte Carlo simulation software Geant4. Using this software an application simulating the irradiation of the spherical body with predefined chemical composition by galactic cosmic-ray protons was developed. The fluxes of secondary neutrons and protons generated within the body of the sample are calculated. These are further used for the calculation of the production rates for cosmogenic nuclides. The plausibility of the presented model was tested in case of the well-studied meteoritic sample Knyahinya for which the production rates of cosmogenic nuclides were previously measured and also calculated using MCNP simulation software. The production rates for 3He, 10Be, 21Ne, 22Ne, 26Al, 36Cl, 38Ar, 39Ar, 41Ca and 53Mn have been calculated in Knyahinya meteorite and for 10Be, 26Al and 36Cl in Apollo 17 sample 73,002. Examining the links and potential feedbacks between tectonics and climate requires understanding the processes and variables controlling erosion. At the orogen scale, tectonics and climate are thought to be linked through the influence of mountain elevation on orographic precipitation and glaciation; the only documented erosional processes capable of balancing rapid rock‐uplift rates are glacial erosion or coupled river incision and landsliding. Our 20 new 10Be derived catchment‐averaged denudation rates from the Western Southern Alps of New Zealand generally range between 0.6 and 9 mm/yr, within the same order of magnitude as fault‐throw rates, exhumation rates, and erosion rates estimated from suspended sediment yields and landslide inventories. Combining our data with previously published 10Be denudation rates, we find that the proportion of catchment area in the 1,500–2,000 m elevation window is the variable that best explains denudation rate variability and the disparity between rock‐uplift rates and denudation rates. This correlation indicates that enhanced erosion likely occurs at 1,500–2,000 m above sea level, where periglacial and paraglacial processes have been proposed to be most active. We find that these temperature‐controlled erosional processes, which are also elevation‐dependent, can play a greater role in modulating erosion during interglacials than precipitation or glaciation. Our data suggest that temperature‐controlled peri‐ and paraglacial erosion could be efficient enough to balance some of the fastest rock‐uplift rates on Earth. Hence, temperature‐controlled erosion could contribute to limiting orogen elevations and modulating the erosion rates dictated by rock‐uplift, playing an essential role in linking tectonics and climate. These erosional processes are often regulated by climate; for example, erosion is commonly more efficient where there are glaciers or in the wetter side of mountain ranges. We present 20 new 10Be concentrations, which are commonly used as a proxy for how fast drainage basins erode, from the Western Southern Alps of New Zealand, one of the fastest‐eroding places on Earth. We find that the rate at which these drainage basins erode is best predicted by the proportion of their drainage area that falls within the 1,500–2,000 m above sea‐level elevation window. This elevation range had previously been suggested to be where rocks are damaged and eroded through freeze‐thaw cycles. It is also the elevation window from which glaciers are currently retreating or have recently retreated, which can intensify erosion. Both freeze‐thaw cycles and glacier retreat depend on elevation and are related to temperature; therefore, we infer that temperature‐controlled erosional processes have likely dominated erosion for the last decades to hundreds of years. The Hengduan Mountains is in the transitional zone between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau in China, and a key area for elucidating the Quaternary environmental changes in Asia. The paleo-Daocheng ice cap was located on the Shaluli Hilly Plateau in the northeastern Hengduan Mountains, the oldest moraines in the Hengduan Mountains region were found in the ice cap area. Such glacial landforms provide key evidence to study the timing when this area entered the cryosphere with the uplift of the QTP. However, it is difficult to collect suitable glacial boulders from these moraines for traditional terrestrial in-situ cosmogenic nuclide (TCN) exposure dating because of long-term severe moraine degradation. Here, we collected clast samples from the moraine surface and depth profile to constrain the age of the oldest moraine in Kuzhaori (moraine E) using TCN 10Be dating technique. The minimum 10Be ages of five clast samples from the moraine surface range from 187.4±1.5 to 576.8±4.3 ka, implying that the moraine has been seriously degraded since deposition. Based on the TCN 10Be concentrations of the samples from a depth profile and simulations, the exposure-erosion-inheritance history of the profile was obtained. By fitting to the profile 10Be concentrations using the chi-square test, the simulations yielded a reliable age of 626.0±52.5 ka for the moraine. Therefore, the oldest moraine (moraine E) in Kuzhaori was most likely formed at about 0.63 Ma ago, corresponding to the marine isotope stage (MIS) 16. This glaciation represents the maximum Quaternary glaciation after the QTP was elevated into the cryosphere by the Kunlun-Yellow River Tectonic Movement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides (TCN) are widely employed to infer denudation rates in mountainous landscapes. The calculation of an inferred denudation rate (Dinf) from TCN concentrations is typically performed under the assumptions that denudation rates were steady during TCN accumulation and that soil chemical weathering negligibly impacted soil mineral abundances. In many landscapes, however, denudation rates were not steady and soil composition was significantly impacted by chemical weathering, which complicates interpretation of TCN concentrations. We present a landscape evolution model that computes transient changes in topography, soil thickness, soil mineralogy, and soil TCN concentrations. We used this model to investigate TCN responses in transient landscapes by imposing idealized perturbations in tectonically (rock uplift rate) and climatically sensitive parameters (soil production efficiency, hillslope transport efficiency, and mineral dissolution rate) on initially steady‐state landscapes. These experiments revealed key insights about TCN responses in transient landscapes. (a) Accounting for soil chemical erosion is necessary to accurately calculate Dinf. (b) Responses of Dinf to tectonic perturbations differ from those to climatic perturbations, suggesting that spatial and temporal patterns in Dinf are signatures of perturbation type and magnitude. (c) If soil chemical erosion is accounted for, basin‐averaged Dinf inferred from TCN in stream sediment closely tracks actual basin‐averaged denudation rate, showing that Dinf is a reasonable proxy for actual denudation rate, even in many transient landscapes. (d) Response times of Dinf to perturbations increase with hillslope length, implying that response times should be sensitive to the climatic, biological, and lithologic processes that control hillslope length. Plain Language Summary: In geomorphology, the rate at which mountains wear down is commonly inferred from concentrations of cosmogenic nuclides in minerals in soil or river sand. Cosmogenic nuclides are isotopes that build up in minerals during exposure to high energy particles from space, accumulating at a rate that depends on the degree to which the soil is chemically altered and the mountain's erosion rate itself. To explore how cosmogenic nuclide concentrations change in soil over time, we developed a computer model that tracks cosmogenic nuclide concentrations in soil across a landscape. We used this model to perform two model experiments: one driven by a change in the rate at which the bedrock is rising (the so‐called tectonic experiment), and the other driven by a change in rainfall (the climatic experiment). Our experiments confirm that accounting for soil composition is necessary to accurately infer erosion rate. They also show that cosmogenic nuclide concentrations respond differently to tectonic changes than climatic changes, implying that patterns of cosmogenic nuclide concentrations may reflect perturbation type. The time it takes cosmogenic nuclide concentrations to respond to a perturbation increases with the length of the hills from the ridge to the valley, implying that response times should be influenced by climate, life, and rock type. These results show how this model can be used to explore how mountainous topography, soils, and cosmogenic nuclides change simultaneously. Our model will be a useful tool for improving field measurements of cosmogenic nuclide concentrations in soil and in stream sediment. The Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) was the largest ice sheet in the Northern Hemisphere during the last glacial cycle. The effects of its demise on global climate and sea‐level changes during the subsequent deglaciation are unequivocal. Understanding the interplay between ice sheets and long‐term or short‐term (e.g. abrupt) climatic events is therefore crucial for predicting future rates of ice sheet melting and their potential contribution to sea‐level changes. Here, we present 37 new 10Be surface exposure ages from easternmost Québec–Labrador that allow us to identify close ties between regional deglaciation history and climate. These results reveal that the LIS was disconnected from the Newfoundland Ice Cap by ~14.1 ka. Samples collected from moraine boulders indicate that this event was followed by five major stillstands and/or readvance stages of the LIS margin. Integrating our new moraine ages with those of earlier studies allows us to depict a temporal framework including events at ~12.9, ~11.5, ~10.4, ~9.3 and ~8.4–8.2 ka. These moraine ages highlight a strong sensitivity of the LIS to temperature changes in the Northern Hemisphere, as the documented continental ice margin stabilizations coincide with abrupt cooling events recorded in Greenland ice cores. These observations support the idea of a negative feedback mechanism induced by meltwater forcings into the North Atlantic Ocean which, in turn, provoked repeated cold reversals during the Younger Dryas and early Holocene. The data included in this article specify the characteristics of the Upper Miocene fill of the Turiec Basin and served for reconstruction of temporal evolution of depositional systems in this intermontane basin located within the Western Carpathians (Central Europe). The borehole lithological log data were used to describe the stratigraphy of the Turiec Basin in geological sections and were gained in the Geofond archive of the State Geological Institute of Dionýz Štúr. The sedimentological data were acquired by field research applying facies analysis to nine outcrop sites. The outcrops served for grain size analyzes performed by sieving and laser diffraction, for geochemical analyzes using ICP-ES, ICP-MS and XRF, and for mineralogical analyzes of whole rock and clay fraction by XRD. Moreover, the muddy layers on outcrops served for collection of 31 samples for the authigenic 10Be/9Be dating. The geochronological data are presented by using five different initial ratios for calculation, determined within the Turiec Basin at the Late Pleistocene alluvial fan and river terrace sites as well as at two Holocene muddy floodplain sites. Another initial ratio data are gained from an Upper Miocene lacustrine succession dated independently by magnetostratigraphy in previous research. Finally, a summary of previously published strontium isotope data from the Turiec Basin is included.
