The main changes in the buccal and maxillofacial region are modifications of the facial bones (leading to the loss of the mandibular angle due to micrognathia), deep palate, premature and/or delayed tooth eruption, hypopneumatization of the maxillary sinuses, chin hypoplasia, hypercementosis, enamel hypoplasia, hyperdontia, incomplete dentin calcification, root hypoplasia, pulp chamber obliteration, and increased free functional space. This paper aims to report a case of a patient with PYCD, in which are highlighted the oral manifestations of this syndrome and present an option of oral rehabilitative treatment through a removable overdenture made on natural tooth of the patient. The technique of dental coating through overdenture is a simple, viable and conservative alternative for oral rehabilitation of patients with large maxillomandibular discrepancies, as in cases of pycnodysostosis, especially in the presence of increased free space – characteristic of patients with this syndrome. The result was quite satisfactory both aesthetically and functionally and provided a better life quality for the patient.Keywords: malocclusion, pycnodysostosis, oral rehabilitation

Pharmacists, more than drug producer, is being a co-responsible for drug therapy and promoter of the rational use of medicines, enhancing their role. Appearance of a new philosophy, pharmaceutical care, came to organize, enhance and allowing this new role of the pharmacist in primary health care. Objectives of the present study were to determine the existence and to characterize the request for pharmaceutical care services and to assess the wiliness to pay for these services in a privately owned community pharmacy. An interview following a check-list was used by researchers to gather data. In 236 interviewed customers, 88.1% did not know the term ‘pharmaceutical care’, 67.2% showed to be interested on the service. Regarding the wiliness to pay, 39.9% conditioned it to the amount, and 10.1% stated that they would pay for the service. This allows us to conclude than in this setting, a demand existed, what allows repeating this survey in other settings, what lead us to the necessity of defining a standard of practice in Brazil, and in the rest of the world, to provide care to those who need it.

The aim of this study was to investigate cellular migration induced by calcium hydroxide to air-pouch cavities in mice. The migration was more specific to neutrophil and was dose and time dependent (peaking 96 h after stimulation). This migration was inhibited by pretreatment with thalidomide, indomethacin, MK886, meloxicam, dexamethasone, MK886 associated with indomethacin, and MK886 associated with indomethacin and dexamethasone. The air-pouch exudate from animals stimulated with calcium hydroxide showed an increase of leukotriene-B(4) (LTB(4)), interleukin-1beta, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractant (KC), and macrophage inflammatory protein 2 (MIP-2) release. Pretreatment with 3% thioglycollate increased the macrophage population in the air pouch but did not change neutrophil migration. Depleting the resident mast cells through chronic pretreatment with compound 48/80 did not alter neutrophil migration in response to calcium hydroxide. It was possible to conclude that calcium hydroxide-induced neutrophil migration to the air-pouch cavity in mice is mediated by LTB(4), TNF-alpha, KC, MIP-2, and prostaglandins, but it was not dependent on macrophages or mast cells. Objective. Little is known about effects of vaginal lubricants with barrier contraceptives on detection of sexually transmissible infections. We hypothesized that Replens gel used with a diaphragm would neither inhibit human papillomavirus (HPV) detection in cervical samples and chlamydia (CT) and gonorrhea (GC) detection in urine samples, nor affect cervical cytology quality.Materials and Methods. After a clinician-collected cervical sample and a self-collected vaginal sample for HPV detection ('pregel' specimens), women placed a diaphragm containing Replens gel into the vagina. Participants (n = 77) removed the diaphragm after 6 hours and performed vaginal HPV self-sampling at several time points thereafter. Clinicians performed cervical cytology sampling and HPV testing ('postgel' specimens) 24 hours after diaphragm removal. Pregel and postgel specimens were analyzed with and without added SiHa cells (source of defined numbers of HPV16 genomes). HPV was detected by polymerase chain reaction using MY09/11 primers. Urine samples were obtained for CT and GC testing. Proportions of samples testing positive were compared using relative risk (RR) regression models.Results. Proportions with detectable HPV in the clinician-collected cervical pregel and postgel samples were not statistically different for samples with added SiHa cells (88.3% vs 93.2%, RR = 1.06, 95% confidence interval = 0.96-1.14) or for native HPV infection (32.9% vs 28.2%, RR = 0.87, 95% confidence interval = 0.71-1.06). In self-collected vaginal postgel samples, there was no trend for decreased HPV detection after gel exposure. Gel affected neither urine tests for CT and GC nor cytological quality.Conclusions. The aim of this study was to histopathologically examine the reaction of the connective tissue of rats to 2 calcium hydroxide-based sealers, Acroseal and Sealapex. Dentin tubes containing the materials and empty control tubes were implanted into the dorsal connective tissue of 36 Wistar albino rats. The animals were killed after 7 or 30 days, and the specimens were prepared for histologic analysis with hematoxylin and eosin, Von Kossa technique, and polarized light. Results were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test. Both materials caused mild or moderate inflammatory reactions on the 7th day, but these reactions decreased by the 30th day with no significant difference at any time (P > .05). Ulva lactuca, a green seaweed, may be an alternative source of nutrients and bioactive compounds for weaned piglets. However, it has a recalcitrant cell wall rich in a sulphated polysaccharide - ulvan - that is indigestible to monogastrics. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary incorporation of 7% U. lactuca, combined with carbohydrases supplementation (commercial carbohydrase mixture or recombinant ulvan lyase), on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and gut health parameters (morphology and microbiota) of weaned piglets. The experiment was conducted over 14 days using 40 weaned piglets randomly allocated to one of four experimental diets: a control diet based on wheat-maize-soybean meal, a diet with 7% U. lactuca replacing the control diet (UL), a diet with UL supplemented with 0.005% Rovabio® Excel AP, and a diet with UL supplemented with 0.01% of a recombinant ulvan lyase. The dietary treatments had no major effects on growth performance, nitrogen balance and gut content variables, as well as histological measurements. Contrarily, dry matter and organic matter digestibility decreased with dietary seaweed inclusion, while hemicellulose digestibility increased, suggesting a high fermentability of this cell wall fraction independently of carbohydrases supplementation. Some beneficial microbial populations increased as a consequence of enzymatic supplementation (e.g., Prevotella), while seaweed diets as a whole led to an increased abundance of Shuttleworthia, Anaeroplasma and Lachnospiraceae_NK3A20_group, all related with a healthier gut. It also decreased Lactobacillus when compared to controls, which is possibly related to increased bioavailability of seaweed zinc. This study indicates that, under these experimental conditions, up to 7% dietary U. lactuca has no detrimental effect on piglet growth, despite decreasing acid detergent fibre digestibility. Background: The MDS-UPDRS has been available in English since 2008, showing satisfactory clinimetric results and being proposed as the new official benchmark scale for Parkinson's disease (PD), being cited as a core instrument for PD in the National Institutes of Neurological Disorders and Stroke Common Data Elements program. For this reason, the MDS created guidelines for development of MDS-UPDRS official, clinimetrically validated translations., Objective: This study presents the formal process used to obtain the officially approved Portuguese version of the MDS-UPDRS., Methods: The study consisted of three phases: (1) Independent translation by Portuguese and Brazilian teams followed by a challenging consensus process that this article particularly emphasizes; (2) Cognitive pretest involving raters and patients from both Portugal and Brazil; (3) Validation test with a sample of 367 native Portuguese-speaking PD patients., Results: The overall factor structure of the Portuguese version was consistent with the English version based on a comparative fit index ≥0.96 for all four parts of the MDS-UPDRS., Conclusion: This version can be designated as the official Portuguese version of the MDS-UPDRS., (© 2024 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.)

Bacterial resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii is a significant public health challenge, as these bacteria can evade multiple antibiotics, leading to difficult-to-treat infections with high mortality rates. As part of the search for alternatives, essential oils from medicinal plants have shown promising antibacterial potential due to their diverse chemical constituents. This study evaluated the antibacterial, antibiofilm, and synergistic activities of the essential oil of Lippia origanoides (EOLo) and its main constituents against multidrug-resistant clinical isolates of A. baumannii . Additionally, the antibacterial and antibiofilm potential of a nanoemulsion containing carvacrol (NE-CAR) was assessed. EOLo was extracted through hydrodistillation, and its components were identified via gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The A. baumannii isolates ( n = 9) were identified and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility using standard disk diffusion methods. Antibacterial activity was determined by broth microdilution, while antibiofilm activity was measured using colorimetric methods with crystal violet and scanning electron microscopy. Synergism tests with antibiotics (meropenem, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, and ampicillin+sulbactam) were performed using the checkerboard method. The primary constituents of EOLo included carvacrol (48.44%), p -cymene (14.58%), and thymol (10.16%). EOLo, carvacrol, and thymol demonstrated significant antibacterial activity, with carvacrol showing the strongest effect. They were also effective in reducing biofilm formation, as was NE-CAR. The combinations with antibiotics revealed significant synergistic effects, lowering the minimum inhibitory concentration of the tested antibiotics. Therefore, this study confirms the notable antibacterial activity of the essential oil of L. origanoides and its constituents, especially carvacrol, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic alternative for A. baumannii infections., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2024 The Authors. Long-loop rodeo is a major competition for Criollo horses. We aimed to feature long-loop tournaments and to assess the profiles of competing horses. The animals (n = 49) were registered, and their body mass/scores, information about breeding, feeding, and training management, loaded weight, and tournament track (n = 11) were collected; speeds reached were estimated. Heart and respiratory rates of horses (n = 27) were collected before the tournament, on the final day of the event, and 18-24 h after the end of the tournament. Blood samples were collected from the animals at the same time. Blood count (n = 19) and biochemical profile (n = 28) were conducted based on total proteins, albumin, globulin, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, urea, creatinine, glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol. Data were assessed using analysis of variance in association with Tukey's test (P ≤0.05) and Spearman's correlation (P ≤0.05). Most horses were bred in a semi-stable system, fed roughage and concentrate, and subjected to non-standardized training. The tournament comprised a high-intensity and short-duration exercise with a mean speed of 6.44 m/s, during which the horses carried 25.59% of their body weight on their backs. Background: To compare, through a systematic literature review, the cost-effectiveness ratio of home care compared to hospital care for following up patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)., Methods: This review was registered in PROSPERO, and the bibliographic search was performed in six primary databases [MedLine (via PubMed), Scopus, LILACS, SciELO, Web of Science, and Embase], two dedicated databases for economic studies (NHS Economic Evaluation Database (NHS EED) and Cost-Effectiveness Analysis (CEA) Registry), and two databases for partially searching the "gray literature" (DansEasy and ProQuest). This review only included studies that compared home and hospital care for patients diagnosed with COPD, regardless of publication year or language. Two reviewers selected the studies, extracted the data, and assessed the risk of bias independently. A JBI tool was used for risk of bias assessment., Results and Discussion: 7,279 studies were found, of which 14 met the eligibility criteria. Only one study adequately met all items of the risk of bias assessment. Thirteen studies found lower costs and higher effectiveness for home care. Home care showed a better cost-effectiveness ratio than hospital care for COPD patients. Regarding effectiveness, there is no possibility of choosing a more effective care for COPD patients, given the incipience of the data presented on eligible studies. Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is frequently associated with several bacterial infections in dogs, highlighting a One Health concern due to the zoonotic potential. Given the clinical significance of this pathogen, we performed comprehensive genomic analyses of 28 S. pseudintermedius strains isolated from canine infections throughout whole-genome sequencing using Illumina HiSeq, and compared the genetic features between S. pseudintermedius methicillin-resistant (MRSP) and methicillin-susceptible (MSSP) strains. Our analyses determined that MRSP genomes are larger than MSSP strains, with significant changes in antimicrobial resistance genes and virulent markers, suggesting differences in the pathogenicity of MRSP and MSSP strains. In addition, the pangenome analysis of S. pseudintermedius from canine and human origins identified core and accessory genomes with 1847 and 3037 genes, respectively, which indicates that most of the S. pseudintermedius genome is highly variable. Furthermore, phylogenomic analysis clearly separated MRSP from MSSP strains, despite their infection sites, showing phylogenetic differences according to methicillin susceptibility. Altogether our findings underscore the importance of studying the evolutionary dynamics of S. pseudintermedius , which is crucial for the development of effective prevention and control strategies of resistant S. pseudintermedius infections.

Microalgae are a promising feedstock with proven biostimulant activity that is enhanced by their biochemical components (e.g., amino acids and phytohormones), which turns them into an appealing feedstock to reduce the use of fertilisers in agriculture and improve crop productivity and resilience. Thus, this work aimed to isolate protein-rich microalgal mutants with increased biostimulant activity. Random mutagenesis was performed with Chlorella vulgaris, and a selection of protein-rich mutants were sorted through fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS), resulting in the isolation of 17 protein-rich mutant strains with protein contents 19-34% higher than that of the wildtype (WT). Furthermore, mutant F4 displayed a 38%, 22% and 62% higher biomass productivity, growth rate and chlorophyll content, respectively. This mutant was then scaled up to a 7 L benchtop reactor to produce biomass and evaluate the biostimulant potential of this novel strain towards garden cress seeds. Compared to water (control), the germination index and the relative total growth increased by 7% and 19%, respectively, after the application of 0.1 g L -1 of this bioproduct, which highlights its biostimulant potential.

Mosquito-borne diseases are responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths per year. The identification and control of the vectors that transmit pathogens to humans are crucial for disease prevention and management. Currently, morphological classification and molecular analyses via DNA barcoding are the standard methods used for vector identification. However, these approaches have several limitations. In the last decade, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) profiling has emerged as an innovative technology in biological sciences and is now considered as a relevant tool for the identification of pathogens and arthropods. Beyond species identification, this tool is also valuable for determining various life traits of arthropod vectors. The purpose of the present systematic review was to highlight the contribution of MALDI-TOF MS to the surveillance and control of mosquito-borne diseases. Published articles from January 2003 to August 2024 were retrieved, focusing on different aspects of mosquito life traits that could be determinants in disease transmission and vector management. The screening of the scientific literature resulted in the selection of 54 published articles that assessed MALDI-TOF MS profiling to study various mosquito biological factors, such species identification, life expectancy, gender, trophic preferences, microbiota, and insecticide resistance. Although a large majority of the selected articles focused on species identification, the present review shows that MALDI-TOF MS profiling is promising for rapidly identifying various mosquito life traits, with high-throughput capacity, reliability, and low cost. The strengths and weaknesses of this proteomic tool for vector control and surveillance are discussed.

This study evaluates the effect of prolonged feeding with a high inclusion level of Spirulina, combined with peptidases, on broiler chicken's growth performance, digesta viscosity, carcass attributes and meat quality. The experiment involved 120 male broilers divided into 40 battery brooders, each housing 3 birds. Post 7-day acclimatisation with a corn and soybean-based diet, the birds were provided with one of four diets: a corn and soybean meal-based diet (CON), a mix incorporating 15% Spirulina (SP), a Spirulina-rich mix supplemented with 0.025% of commercial VemoZyme ® P (SPV), or a Spirulina-rich mix supplemented with 0.10% of porcine pancreatin (SPP). The CON group had higher body weight and weight gain ( p  < 0.001) and a lower feed conversion ratio ( p  < 0.001) from day 7-21, compared to the Spirulina-fed groups. Spirulina-fed chickens significantly increased ileum viscosity ( p  < 0.05). Spirulina also elevated the weight ( p  < 0.05) of the duodenum and the length ( p  < 0.001) of the entire gastrointestinal tract compared to CON. Breast and thigh muscles from Spirulina-fed broilers displayed higher values of yellowness (b*) ( p  < 0.001), pigments ( p  < 0.05), and n-3 PUFA ( p  < 0.01), while n-6/n-3 ratio ( p  < 0.001) and α-tocopherol ( p  < 0.001) decreased relative to the CON. In conclusion, the introduction of a high level of Spirulina into broiler diets for an extended duration, has the potential to diminish birds' growth performance, possibly due to increased digesta viscosity. Bovine mastitis, an inflammation of the mammary glands, is mainly caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. While antibiotics are the primary treatment for this disease, their effectiveness is often diminished due to resistant strains and biofilm formation, creating the need for safer and more efficient therapies. Plant-based oil therapies, particularly those derived from the genus Eugenia, are gaining popularity due to their pharmacological potential and historical use. In this study, we evaluated the antibacterial, antibiofilm, and synergistic potential of essential oils (EOs) from four species of the genus Eugenia (E. brejoensis, E. gracillima, E. pohliana, and E. stictopetala) against S. aureus isolates from bovine mastitis. The EO of E. stictopetala was obtained by hydrodistillation, and its composition was analyzed using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The experiment employed seven clinical isolates from mastitis and two control strains: ATCC 33591 (methicillin-resistant S. aureus - MRSA) and ATCC 25923 (methicillin-susceptible and biofilm producer). A broth microdilution assay was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the EOs and oxacillin. The EO of E. stictopetala contained (E)-caryophyllene (18.01%), β-pinene (8.84%), (E)-nerolidol (8.24%), and α-humulene (6.14%) as major compounds. In the MIC assay, all essential oils showed bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects, especially the species E. brejoensis and E. pohliana, which had MICs ranging from 64 to 256 µg/mL. Regarding the antibiofilm effect, all essential oils were capable of interfering with biofilm formation at subinhibitory concentrations of ½ and ¼ of the MIC. However, they did not significantly affect pre-established biofilms. Additionally, a synergistic interaction was detected between the EOs and oxacillin, with a reduction of 75-93.75% in the antimicrobial MIC. Molecular docking studies indicated that the phytochemicals β-(E)-caryophyllene, (E)-nerolidol, Δ-elemene, and α-cadinol present in the EOs formed more stable complexes with penicillin-binding proteins, indicating a possible mechanism of antibacterial action. Therefore, these results show that the essential oils of Eugenia spp. are promising sources for the development of new therapeutic methods, opening new perspectives for a more effective treatment of bovine mastitis., (© 2024. The urinary volume and residual urine volume are pieces of information that can provide relevant clinical data for dogs and cats, especially those hospitalized. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate mathematical formulas described in human and veterinary literature to estimate urinary volume in dogs and experimental models. For this purpose, nine male dog cadavers and twelve experimental models were used to evaluate residual volume, small, medium, and large, using three different formulas. Data were obtained by three different examiners: two ultrasonographers and one nonultrasonographer. Each examiner recorded three longitudinal and transverse images, obtaining measurements of width, length, and height at each proposed volume. The measurements were then averaged, and the result was added to the formulas, thus estimating urinary volume. All three formulas achieved higher accuracy in estimating smaller volumes, with a gradual decrease as urinary volume increased. The error of all formulas was less than 10%, even when compared with evaluations in experimental models and dogs. There was variation in estimation between ultrasonographers and nonultrasonographer examiners; however, this variation was low, allowing for the assertion that both can apply the technique. Thus, it is concluded that estimating urinary bladder volume using mathematical formulas and 2D ultrasound is accurate and, therefore, an alternative and viable option for evaluating the urinary tract., (© 2024 American College of Veterinary Radiology.)

This systematic review examines the impact of varying Spirulina ( Limnospira platensis ) intake levels on broiler chickens, focusing on growth performance, blood health markers and carcass traits. The data revealed cumulative Spirulina intakes from 3.13 g to 521 g per bird (total feed consumed multiplied by its proportion in the diet) establish a cubic relationship between dosage and growth outcomes. Initial benefits peak and diminish with increased intake, with the optimal threshold for growth performance identified at 45 g per bird. Lower intakes between 14 g and 29 g per bird enhance blood health markers, improving lipid profiles and antioxidant capacity. Similarly, cumulative intakes of 14 g to 37 g per bird optimise meat quality, resulting in better dressing percentages, breast and thigh yields and meat tenderness while minimizing undesirable traits like abdominal fat and cooking loss. These findings underscore the importance of precisely calibrated Spirulina supplementation strategies to maximise growth, health and meat quality benefits while avoiding adverse effects at higher doses. Future research should focus on identifying optimal dosage and duration, assessing long-term implications, elucidating mechanisms of action and ensuring safety and regulatory compliance. Comparative studies with other feed additives could further establish Spirulina's effectiveness and economic viability in poultry production.
