The valorization of residual biomass plays a decisive role in the actual implementation of the concept of “circular economy”, according to which each waste material must be reused at its highest level in order to reduce the impact of human activities on the biosphere. The Italian project “INNOVARE - Innovative plants for distributed poly-generation by residual biomass”, funded by the local Ministry of Economic Development (MISE), involves the synergic activities of research institutes and industrial companies to pursue the aim of improving micro-cogeneration technologies fueled by biomass, in order to provide effective solutions of short-range biomass-to-energy chains, characterized by high overall efficiency and flexibility. A place for operational demonstration is chosen in the Municipality of Laurino, in the Cilento National Park, located in the Campania region, in the South of Italy. Main problems today still hindering a sustainable use of energy systems powered by biomass in various contexts are related the resource availability over a continuous time scale and to the necessity of extending their operating range in the absence of faults, to assure reliability. Within the project INNOVARE, a micro combined heat and power (mCHP) unit produced and marketed by the Italian Company CMD, the CMD ECO20 system, made of a gasifier, a syngas cleaning system and a spark ignition (SI) internal combustion engine (ICE) working as a co-generator, is chosen as the case study to assess the whole study. The availability of local biomasses is established by studying the agro-industrial production and by identifying forest areas to be properly managed through an original approach using the satellite location system based on the microwave technology. Woodchip from wood maintenance and olive-pomace from oil mills are also identified as possible feedstock for the system. A detailed experimental characterization of the selected cogeneration system is performed in order to identify its main inefficiencies. Numerical models of each component, validated against experimental data, are developed and used to optimize the performance of the whole conversion process. An improvement of the 5.8% on the electrical power is reached by identifying the optimal spark timing strategy. The waste heat recovery loop is modified in order to have at disposal the excess heat when the request for thermal load gets lower than the production capacity of the plant, with an increase in reliability even in the absence of thermal users. The positive development of the planned activities will have important effects at European level, by contributing to the diffusion of renewables, especially in areas where their penetration has been limited by the use of systems powered by non-programmable sources, in line with the principal current priorities of the European 2030 Climate & Energy Framework., Proceedings of the 27th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition, 27-30 May 2019, Lisbon, Portugal, pp. 834-848

Lors d’une enquête judiciaire, le médecin légiste est fréquemment requis pour examiner la victime d’incendie hospitalisée. Il doit établir un certificat descriptif des brûlures en précisant leur origine, leur gravité et le pronostic vital. L’évaluation des séquelles en vue de leur indemnisation ne peut s’effectuer qu’au terme d’une longue période de soins nécessaire à la cicatrisation. L’expertise nécessite de connaître les règles médico-légales qui permettent d’apprécier les spécificités des séquelles cutanées chez les victimes de brûlure grave. Lors de la découverte d’un cadavre sur les lieux d’un incendie, le but de l’autopsie médico-légale est de vérifier que les brûlures sont bien la cause du décès. Les lésions les plus fréquemment observées sont des brûlures graves d’origine thermique. Elles sont souvent associées à une inhalation de fumées. La carbonisation du corps étant souvent utilisée pour dissimuler un homicide, la confrontation des constatations post mortem aux données de l’enquête de police est alors indispensable. Les modifications entraînées par le feu impliquent l’utilisation d’un protocole précis pour l’identification, notamment en situation de catastrophe.

Bien que la cicatrisation des plaies soit un thème médico-chirurgical essentiel depuis l’Antiquité, il a été longtemps négligé. L’essor dans ce domaine, ces 20 dernières années, de la recherche fondamentale et le développement de nouvelles techniques ont fait que la cicatrisation est devenue une entité à part entière, transversale, intéressant plusieurs spécialités. Il a semblé souhaitable, en nous appuyant sur des arguments étymologiques, sémantiques et botaniques, de proposer un néologisme pour regrouper sous une même appellation tous les professionnels de santé oeuvrant dans ce secteur de soins et magnifier ainsi le concept « Plaies et Cicatrisation ».

E’ stata condotta una campagna di monitoraggio di BTEX (benzene, toluene, etilbenzene, m- p- e o-xilene) in uno street canyon profondo nell’area urbana di Napoli. I prelievi sono stati effettuati utilizzando cartucce adsorbenti. In simultanea si sono effettuate misure del traffico e dei parametri meteorologici. Dai risultati è emerso che i livelli di concentrazione di benzene hanno superato, per circa un quarto dei campionamenti, il limite imposto per l’anno 2007 dalla Comunità Europea, pari a 8 µg/Nm3. La correlazione tra i livelli di concentrazione dei BTEX e le emissioni veicolari è risultata bassa. I valori più elevati del coefficiente di correlazione si sono riscontrati per le emissioni dei veicoli a due ruote. La differenza di concentrazione sui due lati della strada, valutata mediante un’analisi statistica, è risultata non significativa. Quest’ultimo risultato può essere di particolare interesse per lo sviluppo di modelli parametrici specifici per street canyon profondi.

This is a source of degradation for the performances of solar cells and further worsen by the consequent non-uniform temperature distribution. The modelling of these effects can be effectively performed only if three-dimensional effects due to the lateral flow of the current into the emitter are taken into account. In this paper, a three-dimensional model allowing to evaluate the behaviour of solar cells under arbitrary non-uniform illumination profile is presented. Numerical simulations were performed in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the model.

24th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference, 21-25 September 2009, Hamburg, Germany; 2070-2073, In this paper we propose an analytical model to describe the operation of a simple test device to directly measure the surface recombination velocity S of semiconductor interfaces. The model calculates the twodimensional concentration of the carriers allowing the measurement of S. The effectiveness of both the analytical model and the measurement technique has been proved by numerical two-dimensional simulations. Finally test devices, whose surfaces have been subjected to various treatments, have been fabricated and characterized. An assessment of the measurement error is also proposed.

Aims: To determine the presence of Vibrio cholerae in different areas of Argentina in three sample types, to determine the composition of planktonic communities in areas at which this pathogen was detected and to characterize the virulence properties and antimicrobial resistance of the recovered environmental isolates. Methods and Results: Water and plankton samples were collected in marine, brackish and freshwater environments. Vibrio cholerae non‐O1, non‐O139 was isolated in 36·1% of the samples analysed. The micro‐organism was detected in freshwater but not in marine or brackish samples. No relationship was found between isolation of V. cholerae and presence of any species of plankton. All the isolates presented very similar virulence profiles by PCR, lacking ctxA and tcpA El Tor and containing hlyA (98·7%), rtxA (99·0%), toxR (98·7%) and stn‐sto (1·9%). Resistance to ampicillin was found in both Tucumán (21%) and Buenos Aires isolates (45%). Conclusions: We identified two geographic areas in Argentina where V. cholerae was present: freshwaters of the rivers from Tucumán and the Río de la Plata. Significance and Impact of the Study: The identification of V. cholerae strains in the environment, carrying both virulence factors and resistance to antimicrobial agents, highlight the need for a continuous and active surveillance of this pathogen. A variety of breast deformities of differing appearances can be grouped together within an extensive syndrome that is characterized by anomalies of the breast base and preferentially involves the lower quadrants. Tuberous breasts are the most typical, but not the only, form of the deformity. The authors studied a series of 37 patients who had breast surgery, and they used a classification of three types: I, II, and III (in increasing order of severity). In type I breasts (minor form), only the lower medial quadrant is deficient; in type II breasts, both lower quadrants are deficient; and in type III breasts, all four quadrants are deficient. The study showed a predominance of minor forms (54 percent of breasts operated on) and of combinations including at least one minor form (81 percent of patients). Seventy percent of women had a breast asymmetry of more than 100 g. Only 27 percent of breasts operated on were hypotrophic, 45 percent were of normal volume, and 28 percent were hypertrophic. The authors propose a procedure to treat the minor forms of the deformity, using a mammaplasty with a superior pedicle and a lower lateral dermoglandular flap to fill the deficient lower medial quadrant. They define the indications of the classic techniques according to the type of deformity and stress the frequent need for secondary revision.

Objective: To compare various techniques for the treatment of pilonidal sinus. Design: Retrospective study Setting: University Hospital of Toulouse, France. Subjects: 246 consecutive patients who presented between 1979 and 1996. The male : female ratio was 2 : 1, and the mean age 26 years (range 18-69). Interventions: 218 one or two stage excision and rotation skin flaps, and 28 simple incisions. Results: 16 sinuses recurred, and no flaps necrosed. Conclusion: Excision and rotation skin flaps offers an effective and elegant alternative to the more classic operations for pilonidal sinus as it causes less postoperative pain and shortens convalescence.

The authors have presented a predetermined design of cutaneous resection for abdominoplasty without relocation of the umbilicus. The design is characterized by two lateral tips, pointing upward, and a central dome. The upper and lower edges of the cutaneous incision are of the same length, which prevents puckers and allows optimal evolution of the scar. The median cutaneous resection removes the horizontal base of the triangular area of pubic hair, producing a lower final scar and giving the mons pubis a more youthful appearance. The lateral cutaneous resections allow transverse redraping of the abdominal skin, and the oblique scars, placed in the natural folds, are easily concealed even under brief attire. Unlike individual resection techniques that require practice and experience, this technique is perfectly codified and can be carried out by less experienced surgeons.
