Abstract

The main resource for a country’s endogenous growth is its human and cultural capital (Romer, 1990) and universities play a very important role in maintaining and building this resource (Boulton and Lucas, 2008). That role however, is rapidly changing as the demands on universities become increasingly complex and challenging (Holm-Nielsen, 2015).The key components of a higher education system are its human capital, funding structures, governance framework, institutional landscape and its research and study programmes. Universities, particularly in open and competitive economies, face increasing competition for talent and resources as well as pressure from politicians and society in general to produce better (more employable) graduates and better (more innovative and usable) research in less time and on less public funding (Ritzen et al., 2014). This contribution attempts to highlight some of the issues and outlines a few of the trends facing European universities today.Comprehensive universities are increasingly challenged not only by their sheer size but by complexity in all aspects of their operation. Just to mention a few: distances in line management have increased, transparency and communication are increasingly difficult, languages and cultures diversify and the influence of key academic staff is diminished. In addition, universities are facing the challenge of accommodating elite students as well as a growing mass of highly diverse HE students. Massification of higher education will be a sustained trend for many years, especially in less economically mature regions. Universities will have to differentiate higher education provision and include programmes for elite students, and most will consider what position to aim for in the higher education landscape.

7. As dimensões do perfecionismo e os sintomas psicopatológicos: o papel das cognições perfecionistas

Abstract

O perfecionismo tem suscitado uma atenção e interesse crescentes por parte de muitos investigadores. Apesar de todo o suporte teórico e conceptual acerca deste constructo, os resultados das investigações empíricas são ainda pouco conclusivos no que diz respeito ao papel desempenhado pelas cognições perfecionistas na manutenção do perfecionismo e dos sintomas psicopatológicos. As cognições perfecionistas são pensamentos automáticos que refletem a necessidade de ser perfeito e as preocupações com a incapacidade de alcançar a perfeição. Incluir o estudo destas cognições nas investigações sobre perfecionismo parece ser cada vez mais importante, inclusive por estas demonstrarem repercussões em sintomas psicopatológicos, que por vezes não são visíveis recorrendo apenas ao estudo do perfecionismo-traço. O presente trabalho é composto por dois estudos. O primeiro estudo pretende analisar as propriedades psicométricas do Inventário de Cognições Perfecionistas (PCI) com uma amostra de 315 jovens-adultos e adultos portugueses. A amostra é composta por participantes de ambos os sexos com idades compreendidas entre os 18 e os 66 anos (M = 31.94, DP = 11.78). Os participantes responderam ao Inventário de Cognições Perfecionistas (PCI), à Escala Multidimensional de Perfecionismo (HMPS) e à Escala Multidimensional de Perfecionismo (FMPS) e para avaliar a frequência de pensamentos automáticos o Questionário de Pensamentos Automáticos – Revisto (ATQ-R). Os resultados da análise fatorial exploratória permitiram replicar o modelo unifatorial original do PCI e os da análise fatorial confirmatória indicam índices de ajustamento bastante satisfatórios. Em relação à fiabilidade e validade, estes resultados vão ao encontro do estudo original do PCI e permitem considera-lo um instrumento viável e fidedigno para o estudo das cognições perfecionistas. O segundo estudo tem como objetivo compreender o papel das cognições perfecionistas na relação entre o perfecionismo e os sintomas psicopatológicos. Para este estudo utilizamos a mesma amostra (N = 315) e os mesmos instrumentos do estudo 1, apenas adicionando a Escala de Ansiedade, Depressão e Stress (DASS-21) para avaliar os sintomas psicopatológicos. Foi possível observar que as diferentes dimensões de perfecionismo surgem associadas de forma significativa às cognições perfecionistas e que tanto o perfecionismo-traço como as cognições surgem fortemente correlacionadas com os sintomas de depressão, ansiedade e stresse. Foi ainda possível concluir que as cognições perfecionistas desempenham um papel mediador entre o perfecionismo adaptativo e desadaptativo e os sintomas psicopatológicos. Podemos concluir que as cognições perfecionistas quando presentes em indivíduos perfecionistas com sintomas psicopatológicos, podem funcionar como fator agravante, o que parece sugerir a necessidade de considerar a importância das cognições perfecionistas no desenvolvimento e manutenção de alguns quadros clínicos.

9. Multiple Phlebovirus (Bunyaviridae) genetic groups detected in Rhipicephalus, Hyalommaand Dermacentorticks from southern Portugal

Abstract

In the last decade, various research groups have reported a large diversity of new tick-borne phleboviruses, mostly prompted by the discovery of important human pathogens such as the Heartland and severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome viruses. Since these analyses have rarely been conducted using ticks collected from Southern Europe, this study was carried out so as to bring new insights into the diversity of phleboviruses circulating in Southern Portugal. Tick specimens were collected from the vegetation (questing ticks) or directly from animals (feeding ticks), and the majority analysed in pools using a detection strategy targeting the large (L) viral genomic segment. A high number of pools revealed the presence of phebovirus sequences, regardless of gender (male/female), origin (questing/feeding) or even species of the tick analysed. These sequences apparently formed three different groups in phylogenetic trees, and encoded L proteins characterized by group-specific amino acid residues. Furthermore, under the conditions used, these viruses failed to replicate in both Vero and DH82 cells. The impact these viruses may have on human/animal health will be addressed in the future.

Abstract

Political responses to the COVID-19 pandemic led to changes in city soundscapes around the globe. From March to October 2020, a consortium of 261 contributors from 35 countries brought together by the Silent Cities project built a unique soundscape recordings collection to report on local acoustic changes in urban areas. We present this collection here, along with metadata including observational descriptions of the local areas from the contributors, open-source environmental data, open-source confinement levels and calculation of acoustic descriptors. We performed a technical validation of the dataset using statistical models run on a subset of manually annotated soundscapes. Results confirmed the large-scale usability of ecoacoustic indices and automatic sound event recognition in the Silent Cities soundscape collection. We expect this dataset to be useful for research in the multidisciplinary field of environmental sciences.
