Abstract

National audience; This poster presents an optimized list decoding solution for videos corrupted by transmission errors. It is based on no-reference image quality assessment using a convolutional neural network (CNN) that effectively handles non-uniform distortions. At the end of a list decoding process, we evaluate the quality of each generated candidate image (without reference) in order to select the best one. When the transmission error occurs in an intra encoded image, our architecture has a decision accuracy of more than 98% against 46% for the original pre-trained CNN architecture. For errors in an inter encoded image, it's 79% versus 33%.; Cet poster présente une solution de décodage par liste optimisée pour des vidéos corrompues par des erreurs de transmission. Elle est basée sur l'évaluation de la qualité des images sans référence utilisant un réseau de neurones convolutif (CNN) qui gère efficacement les distorsions non uniformes. À l'issue d'un processus de décodage par liste, nous évaluons la qualité de chaque image candidate générée (sans référence) afin de sélectionner la meilleure. Lorsque l'erreur de transmission se produit dans une image intra, notre architecture a une précision de décision de plus de 98% contre 46% pour l'architecture CNN originale pré-entraînée. Pour les erreurs dans une image inter, c'est 79% contre 33%.

Abstract

The 2022 Roadmap is the next update in the series of Plasma Roadmaps published by Journal of Physics D with the intent to identify important outstanding challenges in the field of low-temperature plasma (LTP) physics and technology. The format of the Roadmap is the same as the previous Roadmaps representing the visions of 41 leading experts representing 21 countries and five continents in the various sub-fields of LTP science and technology. In recognition of the evolution in the field, several new topics have been introduced or given more prominence. These new topics and emphasis highlight increased interests in plasma-enabled additive manufacturing, soft materials, electrification of chemical conversions, plasma propulsion, extreme plasma regimes, plasmas in hypersonics, data-driven plasma science and technology and the contribution of LTP to combat COVID-19. In the last few decades, LTP science and technology has made a tremendously positive impact on our society. It is our hope that this roadmap will help continue this excellent track record over the next 5-10 years.

11. Actuation of a lean-premixed flame by diffuse non-equilibrium nanosecond-pulsed plasma at atmospheric pressure.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of diffuse non-equilibrium nanosecond-pulsed plasma at atmospheric pressure on a lean-premixed CH4-air flame (𝛷=0.65, P ~ 0.3 kW). The domain of diffuse plasma existence is explored for both the case of the cold flow (no flame) and the case where a flame is stabilized downstream. The dynamics of plasma propagation and the flame displacement, following a high-voltage pulse, were measured using intensified charge-coupled device imaging. The energy of the plasma was measured using electrical probes and measurements of the second positive system of nitrogen were used to determine the rotational temperature and vibrational populations in the plasma. The effect of plasma on a flame was investigated by varying the pulse repetition frequency gradually from 1 to 7 kHz. Time-resolved imaging of the plasma emission shows that the primary streamer travels at higher velocities with increased pulsing frequency and with the presence of a flame ignited downstream of the discharge. Time-resolved imaging of the flame, following a high-voltage pulse, shows that the flame moves upstream into the unburned methane-air mixture with increased pulsing frequency. As the flame is displaced upstream, the nature of the discharge also changes, whereby less energy is coupled to the gas volume. Spectroscopic results reveal that the region in which the flame stabilizes is that of highest vibrational excitation and lowest rotational temperature. This actuation method is evidence of low-temperature chemical flame enhancement and potential control of a lean-premixed laminar flame at atmospheric pressure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

12. Dutch disease and the mitigation: evidence from Canadian provinces

Abstract

This paper evaluates whether immigration can mitigate the Dutch disease effects associated with booms in natural resource sectors. We derive predicted changes in the size of the non-tradable sector from a small general-equilibrium model à la Obstfeld-Rogoff. Using data for Canadian provinces, we find evidence that aggregate immigration mitigates the increase in the size of the non-tradable sector in booming regions. The mitigation effect is due mostly to interprovincial migration and temporary foreign workers. There is no evidence of such an effect for permanent international immigration. Interprovincial migration also results in a spreading effect of Dutch disease from booming to non-booming provinces.

Abstract

Direct volumetric absorption of solar radiation is possible with fluids which have controlled optical properties. As with conventional surface absorbers, it is possible to make direct absorbing collectors 'selective' where short wavelength absorption is maximised, but long wavelength emission is minimised. This work investigates the fundamental limits of this concept as it pertains to nanofluid-based direct absorbing collectors. This is especially important at higher operating temperatures (100-600. °C) where radiative losses increase significantly.A study of optical parameters of collector components is conducted herein to investigate the best theoretically (and practically) achievable 'selective' nanofluid-based direct absorbing collectors. When the effect of the short wavelength optical properties was investigated, a short wavelength optical depth of 3 was found to be sufficient for efficient absorption of solar radiation while scattering is minimised. It is also advantageous to use a base fluid which shows weak absorption at long wavelengths to reduce emission losses.Overall, this study directs future research of direct absorption by underlying theoretical and real-world limitations of a selective direct absorbing collector - an emerging receiver technology that can be used for efficient solar thermal harvesting.

Abstract

We argue that the failure to disentangle the evolution of the Canadian currency from the U.S. currency leads to potentially incorrect conclusions regarding the case of Dutch disease in Canada. We propose a new approach that is aimed at extracting both currency components and energy- and commodity-price components from observed exchange rates and prices. We first analyze the separate influence of commodity prices on the Canadian and the U.S. currency components. We then estimate the separate impact of the two currency components on the shares of manufacturing employment in Canada. We show that 42 per cent of the manufacturing employment loss that was due to exchange rate developments between 2002 and 2007 is related to the Dutch disease phenomenon. The remaining 58 per cent of the employment loss can be ascribed to the weakness of the U.S. currency.
