2. ATLAS FSI retroflectors and inner detector B-field calibration study

Abstract

The start of data taking at the Large Hadron Collider should make a new frontier in particle physics accessible for the first time. The ATLAS experiment has been designed to take advantage of this opportunity to complete the standard model, whilst having the maximum possible sensitivity to the new physics. The alignment accuracy of the Silicon tracking detectors will be vital if ATLAS is to contribute optimally to precision and discovery physics. In response to this difficult challenge, a novel laser alignment system that can precisely measure 842 lengths between grid nodes attached to the detector support structure has been developed. Each of the lengths is monitored remotely via interferometry and this thesis reports on the punched corner cube retroreflectors that form the end nodes of each interferometer grid line. The development of a process to successfully manufacture, and to ensure the finished quality of, approximately 700 retroreflectors is reported. Optical surface profileometry of retroreflector surfaces has been used to investigate the flatness and angles between reflecting faces. A detailed optical simulation has modelled the observed features in the diffraction patterns from a variety of real retroreflectors. Additionally a method to calibrate B-field scale factors, for the solenoid tracking volume, based on Z-boson decay products is reported. The algorithm is able to retrieve applied changes to the magnetic field in 7]-binned regions of the tracking volume. The stability of the calibration algorithm is tested for 50'000 Z ~ f.1+ 11- decays.

5. Case-Based Learning: An Analysis of Student Groupwork and Instructional Design that Promotes Collaborative Discussion

Abstract

AbstractThe use of small-group collaborative case-based learning methodologies has been growing both in interest and implementation across veterinary college curriculums in recent years. The ability of this pedagogical approach to solidify and deepen learning outcomes is well-established in the broader education literature. However, to achieve this positive impact, students must interact in productive discussions that expand the scope of their understanding. The present study focused on analyzing the ways in which professional veterinary students interact as they work collaboratively through clinical cases, in the context of a Team-Based Learning intensive curriculum. This data was used to draw connections between the questions posed in the clinical case activities and the resulting intragroup collaborative outcomes, which can assist veterinary educators in sparking more robust student discussions through facilitation and instructional design. Fourteen participants formed two student groups that worked on 49 case questions across 5 sessions, providing 98 episodes of collaboration for analysis. The findings of this study revealed how professional veterinary students negotiated perspectives to come to consensus on in-class case-based learning tasks, including eight primary types of statements they made and seven overall patterns of group collaboration. This study highlighted specific elements of instructional design that influenced student collaboration including: allowing for multiple perspectives, sparking disagreement, perceived difficulty, learning outcome level, and the level of consensus required by the question structure. We present specific recommendations for veterinary educators to consider while designing questions for veterinary student groups.

Abstract

Steady-state electrochemical responses are obtained at single Au nanoparticles by using Pt nanoelectrodes and Au single-nanoparticle electrode (SNPE) is constructed by chemically immobilizing a single Au nanoparticle at a Si[O.sub.2]-encapsulated Pt disk nanoelectrode. The studies have shown that the electrocatalytic activity of single Au nanoparticles is measured by using SNPEs and have helped in understanding the structure-function relationship in nanoparticle-based electrocatalysis.

19. Resistive-Pulse Analysis of Single Phospholipid Vesicles Using Quartz Nanochannels.

Abstract

We report the use of resistive-pulse method and quartz nanochannels for the detection and size analysis of single vesicles. Cylindrical shape quartz nanochannels have been used to detect single phospholipid vesicles ranging from 100 to 300 nm and polystyrene nanoparticles ranging from 170 to 400 nm in diameter. Translocations of single vesicles and nanoparticle were detected as individual square current pulses, which could be used to determine particle size. Our results show excellent agreement between the particle/vesicle sizes obtained from nanochannels and those from dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This electronic-based method was found to be fast, simple, and used cheap and robust microsensors made in house. The application of a quartz channel might be combined with other analytical methods, such as amperometry and fluorescence microscopy, to yield more complete information about biological and artificial vesicles.
