Abstract

The tool explains the use medicinal plants in alternative to antibiotics or allopathic anti-parasitic medicines to improve health and welfare by controlling parasitic diseases and harmful bacterial load while enhancing the individuals’ immunity. This technique reduces the resistance of bacteria and parasites threatening health and welfare of pigs in low-input and organic outdoor production systems and subsequently improves production, reproduction and sustainability of the farm.

10. Genes Involved in Susceptibility to Obesity and Emotional Eating Behavior in a Romanian Population.

Abstract

Obesity, a significant public health concern with high prevalence in both adults and children, is a complex disorder arising from the interaction of multiple genes and environmental factors. Advances in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and sequencing technologies have identified numerous polygenic causes of obesity, particularly genes involved in hunger, satiety signals, adipocyte differentiation, and energy expenditure. This study investigates the relationship between six obesity-related genes (CLOCK, FTO, GHRL, LEP, LEPR, MC4R) and their impact on BMI, WC, HC, WHR, and emotional eating behavior in 220 Romanian adults. Emotional eating was assessed using the validated Emotional Eating Questionnaire (EEQ). Our analysis revealed significant variability in obesity-related phenotypes and emotional eating behaviors across different genotypes. Specifically, CLOCK/CC, FTO/AA, and LEP/AA genotypes were strongly associated with higher obesity metrics and emotional eating scores, while GHRL/TT and MC4R/CC were linked to increased BMI and WHR. The interplay between genetic predisposition and emotional eating behavior significantly influenced BMI and WHR, indicating a complex relationship between genetic and behavioral factors. This study, the first of its kind in Romania, provides a foundation for targeted interventions to prevent and reduce obesity and suggests potential strategies for gene expression modulation to mitigate the effects of emotional eating. Adopting a 'One Health' approach by creating an evidence base derived from both human and animal studies is crucial for understanding how to control obesity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract Background Taenia solium and Taenia saginata are food-borne parasites of global importance. In eastern Europe only fragmented information is available on the epidemiology of these zoonotic parasites in humans and animal populations. In particular for T. solium, on-going transmission is suspected. The aim of this systematic review was to collect the available data and describe the current knowledge on the epidemiology of T. solium and T. saginata in eastern Europe. Methods Literature published in international databases from 1990 to 2017 was systematically reviewed. Furthermore, local sources and unpublished data from national databases were retrieved from local eastern European experts. The study area included 22 countries. Results Researchers from 18 out of the 22 countries provided data from local and unpublished sources, while no contacts could be established with researchers from Belarus, Kosovo, Malta and Ukraine. Taeniosis and human cysticercosis cases were reported in 14 and 15 out of the 22 countries, respectively. Estonia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Serbia, and Slovakia reported cases of porcine cysticercosis. Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Ukraine reported bovine cysticercosis. Conclusions There is indication that taeniosis and cysticercosis are present across eastern Europe but information on the occurrence of T. solium and T. saginata across the region remains incomplete. Available data are scarce and species identification is in most cases absent. Given the public health impact of T. solium and the potential economic and trade implications due to T. saginata, notification of taeniosis and human cysticercosis should be implemented and surveillance and notification systems in animals should be improved.

Abstract

Key words: lactoferrin, oregano extract, antimicrobial potential, natural products, ported bacteria swine The widespread and uncontrolled use of antibiotics has led to the emergence of multi-drug resistant microorganisms. Thus, the use of substances with antimicrobial potential can represent reliable alternatives, thus contributing to the reduction of the load of multiresistant pathogens in the veterinary field. Lactoferrin is an iron binding glycoprotein present in exocrine secretions, with multiple biological functions, including antimicrobial potential. This study aimed to assess the antimicrobial capacity of lactoferrin alone and in combination with alcoholic extract of oregano (Origanum vulgare) on Staphylococcus spp. strains (n=5) isolated from nasal cavity of healty swine raised on low-input outdoor farms from North Western and Central Romania. The antibacterial activity was tested by the agar-well diffusion (Kirby–Bauer assay) and broth microdilution methods. The study findings confirmed the hypothesized enhanced antimicrobial properties of lactoferrin in combination with oregano extract against Staphylococcus spp. strains, compared to the two products tested alone and control antibiotic. Our results indicate a synergistic antimicrobial potential for two natural products thus may contribute to the improvement of animal welfare by reducing the load of potentially pathogenic, antibiotic-resistant bacteria. 19. The In Vitro Anticoccidial Activity of Some Herbal Extracts against Eimeria spp. Oocysts Isolated from Piglets

Abstract

Coccidiosis in pigs seldom results in important economic losses. However, it can influence growth rates in weaners and it is an important hygiene indicator in swine farms. Certain herbs, along with their extracts, have been used over the course of history in traditional medicine. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro anticoccidial effects of Allium sativum L. (garlic), Artemisia absinthium L. (wormwood), Coriandrum sativum L. (coriander), Cucurbita pepo L. (pumpkin), Satureja hortensis L. (summer savory), and Calendula officinalis L. (marigold) against Eimeria suis and Eimeria debliecki oocysts. The stock solution of oocysts (58% E. suis + 42% E. debliecki) was incubated for three days, before adding the tested solutions. The unsporulated Eimeria spp. oocysts were then placed in a 3 mL well plate and incubated for 96 h at 27 °C, in a suspension containing serial dilutions of alcoholic plant extracts (5%, 2.5%, 1.25%, 0.625%, and 0.312%). The percentage of sporulated and destroyed oocysts was recorded every 24 h for 96 h. All extracts had a good in vitro anticoccidial effect against oocysts of Eimeria spp. compared with the control groups. Oocyst sporulation was significantly (p = 0.05) inhibited by the 5% marigold extract (3.6% sporulated oocysts). The same extract had the highest lytic effect on oocysts (65.2% destroyed oocysts). Our results prove that the most effective alcoholic plant extract is the marigold extract, followed, in order of efficiency, by the wormwood, coriander, garlic, pumpkin, and summer savory extracts. This study represents a preliminary contribution for establishing a new generation of natural disinfectants aimed at destroying Eimeria oocysts in the context of swine contamination.

20. The Effects of Coriandrum sativum L. and Cucurbita pepo L. against Gastrointestinal Parasites in Swine: An In Vivo Study

Abstract

Parasitic diseases are responsible for substantial losses in reproduction and productivity in swine, creating a major impairment to efficient and profitable livestock management. The use of phytotherapeutic remedies has notably increased over the past decade due to their bioavailability, decreased toxicity, non-polluting nature, and to some extent due to their antiparasitic effect. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antiparasitic potential of Cucurbita pepo L. and Coriandrum sativum L. against protozoa and nematodes found in swine. The samples were collected from weaners, fatteners, and sows and examined via flotation (Willis and McMaster), active sedimentation, Ziehl-Neelsen staining as modified by Henricksen, a modified Blagg method, and eggs/oocyst culture. The parasite species detected were Ascaris suum, Trichuris suis, Oesophagostomum spp., Balantioides coli (syn. Balantidium coli), Eimeria spp., and Cryptosporidium spp., depending on age category. A dose of 500 mg/kg bw/day of C. pepo and 170 mg/kg bw/day of C. sativum powders, administered for ten consecutive days, demonstrated a pronounced anthelmintic (pumpkin) and antiprotozoal (coriander) effect against the aforementioned parasites. Future studies are required to ascertain the optimal dose that maximizes their antiparasitic effectiveness. The current study represents the first Romanian report on the in vivo antiparasitic activity of these two plants tested on digestive parasites in swine.

21. RAISING TECHNOLOGY INDUCED SPATIAL DYNAMICS OF ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE AND ZOONOTIC RISK IN E. COLI ISOLATED FROM SWINE

Abstract

INTRODUCTION Swine are amongst the most important large-scale farmed meat animals, by which a partial coverage of the growing global food demand is managed. Moreover, low-input and organic swine farming continuously expand, proven its beneficial effect on animal welfare and meat quality. In both systems, swine represent a source of E. coli for people by direct contact and food products, the bacteria pathogenicity increasing with its antimicrobial resistance. AIM The study aimed at comparing the dynamics of antibiotic resistance of E. coli strains from pigs raised under intensive and extensive technologies, presuming that under extended antibiotic use on the industrial farm, the number of resistant strains will be higher, than on low-input homesteads located 5 and 10 km from this posing an increased risk for humans. MATERIAL AND METHODS The samples collected from healthy pigs on the industrial farm (n = 16) and the two homesteads (n = 12) were subjected to standard microbiological techniques (cultivation, identification by Vitek 2 system, Kirby-Bauer diffusion test against enrofloxacine, amoxycillin-clavulanic acid, methicillin, cloramphenicol, neomycine, oxytetracycline, cefquinome, tulathromycine, colistine) and MAR (multiple antibiotic resistance) index was calculated. E. coli represented 72% of identified bacteria. MAR index was the lowest on the intensive farm (0.56±0.14) and increased statistically non-significantly with distance (0.59±16, 5 km and 0.61±0.28, 10 km, respectively). CONCLUSION The results undermined the initial hypothesis, probably due to a more controlled use of antibiotics and increased awareness of personnel on the farm, versus uncontrolled human use of antibiotics and internal consumption of obtained meat in the homesteads. Thus, stricter antibiotic residue control and biosecurity measures are needed on small sized households along with rational antibiotic use on the industrial farm to lower the MAR index and implicitly the zoonotic risk pose

28. THE POTENTIAL OF ALCOHOLIC PLANT EXTRACTS TO CONTROL PATHOBIONTS OF SWINE ON A LOW-INPUT FARM

Abstract

Objective / Purpose: Plant extracts have long proven antimicrobial potential depending on both the plant and target animal species. Pathogenic bacteria expose animals to disease risk, thus their control being of utmost importance. This research aimed to investigate the natural potential of locally available traditional medicinal plants in controling the antibiotic resistante bacterial load in swine raised on low-input outdoor farms from North Western and Central Romania. Material and Methods: Aerobic bacterial strains (n=14) originating from the nasal cavities of extensively raised swine were subjected to biochemical identification (Vitek®2 Compact System) and further tested for susceptibility to antibiotics (n=12, antibiotic classes=6, Kirby-Bauer method). Simultaneously, the aromatogram technique was applied to indigenous Calendula officinalis, Saturaja hortensis, Coriandrum sativum, Artemisia absinthium, Cucurbita pepo, Allium sativum alcoholic extracts. Results: The antibiogram indicated a multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) index > 0.2 in 86% of the bacteria (overall MAR=0.34). The highest average of inhibition diameters were observed with chloramphenicol (20.75±0.92 mm) and norfloxacin (20.68±1.55 mm), while the lowest was shown by cefotaxime (7.5±0.79 mm). Considering for intermediate susceptibility towards the tested antibiotics the threshold diameter of 13 mm, 12/14 strains were susceptible to C. pepo, 4/14 to C. sativum and 1/14 to C. officinalis extracts, while other extracts exerted insignificant antimicrobial activity. The average inhibition diameter was of 18.43±1.68 mm for C. pepo and of 11.11±0.68 mm for C. sativum extract. The lowest average was found in Allium sativum - 6.86±0.35 mm. Conclusion / Discussion: Some of the tested plant extracts could display a considerable antimicrobial activity on pathobionts of swine. These plants could enhance the welfare of the animals by reducing the potentially pathogenic, antibiotic resistante bacterial load, as an alternative to classical antibiotic therapy. Abstract

International audience; The PPILOW project aims to co-construct innovations to improve Poultry and Pig Welfare in Low-input outdoor and Organic farming systems through a multi-actor approach. PPILOW implements a participatory approach for proposing and studying welfare-improvement levers. It will provide a combination of practical solutions that can be applied at a pan-European level with specific adjustments depending on citizen’s expectations and the target market. The multi-actor approach consists in involving end-users including farmers, breeding companies, feed producers, consumer associations, retailers, advisers, processors, and scientists in National Practitioner Groups (NPG) in six participating countries. PPILOW partners facilitate the groups by connecting NPG at European level, transferring scientific information, interacting with partners engaged in animal experiments, and co-creating innovations rising from NPG-specific demands. They co-build with PPILOW partners welfare self-assessment tools (development of the PIGLOW app for pigs and refinement of the EBENE® app for poultry), and innovative breeding, feeding, and rearing strategies and techniques to improve the welfare of animals. They co-design protocols, test innovations on farm, and disseminate the results. In turn, they receive insights on methods and scientific results, and inputs from other NPG reinforcing the value of the expected outcomes. Approaches focus on avoiding physical damage and the elimination of layer male chicks, on reducing boar taint of intact male pigs, promoting positive behaviours, animal health, and robustness through field studies with pigs and poultry. Multicriteria analyses of the most effective levers of welfare improvement will be performed to evaluate their economic, social, and environmental impacts based on the ‘One Welfare’ concept; economic and business models will also be developed. To ensure the rapid uptake of the project results by end-users, the close involvement of PPILOW’s NPG throughout the EU will ensure disseminationactivities and the facilitation of change.
