Abstract

The measurement of the deuteron polarization in the polarized target of experiment NA47 at CERN has been much improved over that of previous measurements in other experiments. This has been achieved by upgrading a proton NMR system to a level such that the deuteron thermal equilibrium polarization was measured with a statistical error of 3%. The improvements made in signal detection and measurement are described and overall system performance discussed.

Abstract

We measured d[sigma]/dt(90[deg]cm) for [short up arrow]+p[short up arrow]-->p+p from 1.75 to 5.5 GeV/c, using the Argonne zero-gradient synchrotron 70% polarized proton beam and a 70% polarized proton target. We found that the spin-spin correlation parameter. Ann, equals 60% at low energy, then drops sharply to about 10% near 3.5 GeV/c, and remains constant up to 5.5 GeV/c.

Following the findings of the Bochum group that a light irradiation of d-butanol gives rise to significant deuteron polarizations, we have irradiated samples of n-butanol d10 (98%) in a 19 MeV electron beam at NIST, Gaithersburg MD. Abstract

The University of Michigan Solid Polarized Proton Target (PPT) was built in the late 1980’s; it uses irradiated NH3 at 5 T and 1 K. It was used in a 1990 experiment in a 24 GeV intense proton beam at the Brookhaven AGS, where its average polarization was about 85%. It was recently upgraded for the 70 GeV SPIN@U-70 experiment at IHEP-Protvino in Russia.
