The homogenization procedure developed here is conducted on a laminate with periodic space-time modulation on the fine scale: at leading order, this modulation creates convection in the low-wavelength regime if both parameters are modulated. However, if only one parameter is modulated, which is more realistic, this convective term disappears and one recovers a standard diffusion equation with effective homogeneous parameters; this does not describe the non-reciprocity and the propagation of the field observed from exact dispersion diagrams. This inconsistency is corrected here by considering second-order homogenization which results in a non-reciprocal propagation term that is proved to be non-zero for any laminate and verified via numerical simulation. The same methodology is also applied to the case when the density is modulated in the heat equation, leading therefore to a corrective advective term which cancels out non-reciprocity at the leading order but not at the second order.

Elastic wave manipulation using large arrays of resonators is driving the need for advanced simulation and optimization methods. To address this we introduce and explore a robust framework for wave control: Quasi-normal modes (QNMs). Specifically we consider the problem for thin elastic plates, where the Green's function formalism is well known and readily exploited to solve multiple scattering problems. By studying the associated nonlinear eigenvalue problem we derive a dispersive QNM expansion, providing a reduced-order model for efficient forced response computations which reveals physical insight into the resonant mode excitation. Furthermore, we derive eigenvalue sensitivities with respect to resonator parameters and apply a gradient-based optimization to design quasi-bound states in the continuum and position eigenfrequencies precisely in the complex plane. Scattering simulations validate our approach in structures such as graded line arrays and quasi-crystals. Drawing on QNM concepts from electromagnetism we demonstrate significant advances in elastic metamaterials, highlighting their potential for tailored wave manipulation.

A variety of scientific fields like proteomics and spintronics have created a new demand for on-chip devices capable of sensing parameters localized within a few tens of micrometers. Nano and microelectromechanical systems (NEMS/MEMS) are extensively employed for monitoring parameters that exert uniform forces over hundreds of micrometers or more, such as acceleration, pressure, and magnetic fields. However, they can show significantly degraded sensing performance when targeting more localized parameters, like the mass of a single cell. To address this challenge, we present a new MEMS device that leverages the destructive interference of two topological radiofrequency (RF) counter-propagating wave modes along a piezoelectric Aluminum Scandium Nitride (AlScN) Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) interface. The reported MEMS device opens up opportunities for further purposes, including achieving more stable frequency sources for communication and timing applications.

In this work we investigate the computation of dispersion relation (i.e., band functions) for three-dimensional photonic crystals, formulated as a parameterized Maxwell eigenvalue problem, using a novel hp-adaptive sampling algorithm. We develop an adaptive sampling algorithm in the parameter domain such that local elements with singular points are refined at each iteration, construct a conforming element-wise polynomial space on the adaptive mesh such that the distribution of the local polynomial spaces reflects the regularity of the band functions, and define an element-wise Lagrange interpolation operator to approximate the band functions. We rigorously prove the convergence of the algorithm. To illustrate the significant potential of the algorithm, we present two numerical tests with band gap optimization.

We propose a new model to approximate the wave response of waveguides containing an arbitrary number of small inclusions. The theory is developed to consider any one-dimensional waveguide (longitudinal, flexural, shear, torsional waves or a combination of them by mechanical coupling), containing small inclusions with different material and/or sectional properties. The exact problem is modelled through the formalism of generalised functions, with the Heaviside function accounting for the discontinuous jump in different sectional properties of the inclusions. For asymptotically small inclusions, the exact solution is shown to be equivalent to the Green's function. We hypothesize that these expressions are also valid when the size of the inclusions are small in comparison to the wavelength, allowing us to approximate small inhomogeneities as regular perturbations to the empty-waveguide (the homogeneous waveguide in the absence of scatterers) as point source terms. By approximating solutions through the Green's function, the multiple scattering problem is considerably simplified, allowing us to develop a general methodology in which the solution is expressed for any model for any elastic waveguide. The advantage of our approach is that, by expressing the constitutive equations in first order form as a matrix, the solutions can be expressed in matrix form; therefore, it is trivial to consider models with more degrees of freedom and to arrive at solutions to multiple scattering problems independent of the elastic model used. The theory is validated with two numerical examples, where we perform an error analysis to demonstrate the validity of the approximate solutions, and we propose a parameter quantifying the expected errors in the approximation dependent upon the parameters of the waveguide.

We illuminate the fundamental mechanism responsible for the transition between the non-Hermitian skin effect and defect-induced localization in the bulk. We study a Hamiltonian with non-reciprocal couplings that exhibits the skin effect (the localization of all eigenvectors at one edge) and add an on-site defect in the center. Using a two-scale asymptotic method, we characterize the long-scale growth and decay of the eigenvectors and derive a simple and intuitive effective model for the transition that occurs when the defect is sufficiently large that one of the modes is localized at the defect site, rather than at the edge of the system.

Open cavities are often an essential component in the design of ultra-thin subwavelength metasurfaces and a typical requirement is that cavities have precise, often low frequency, resonances whilst simultaneously being physically compact. To aid this design challenge we develop a methodology to allow isospectral twinning of reference cavities with either smaller or larger ones, enforcing their spectra to coincide so that open resonators are identical in terms of their complex eigenfrequencies. For open systems the spectrum is not purely discrete and real, and we pay special attention to the accurate twinning of leaky modes associated with complex valued eigenfrequencies with an imaginary part orders of magnitude lower than the real part. We further consider twinning of 2D gratings, and model these with Floquet-Bloch conditions along one direction and perfectly matched layers in the other one; complex eigenfrequencies of special interest are located in the vicinity of the positive real line and further depend upon the Bloch wavenumber. The isospectral behaviour is illustrated, and quantified, throughout by numerical simulation using finite element analysis.

Laminated media with material properties modulated in space and time in the form of travelling waves have long been known to exhibit non-reciprocity. However, when using the method of low frequency homogenisation, it was so far only possible to obtain non-reciprocal effective media when both material properties are modulated in time, in the form of a Willis-coupling (or bi-anisotropy in electromagnetism) model. If only one of the two properties is modulated in time, while the other is kept constant, it was thought impossible for the method of homogenisation to recover the expected non-reciprocity since this Willis-coupling coefficient then vanishes. Contrary to this belief, we show that effective media with a single time-modulated parameter are non-reciprocal, provided homogenization is pushed to the second order. This is illustrated by numerical experiments (dispersion diagrams and time-domain simulations) for a bilayered modulated medium.

High-frequency homogenization is used to study dispersive media, containing inclusions placed periodically, for which the properties of the material depend on the frequency (Lorentz or Drude model with damping, for example). Effective properties are obtained near a given point of the dispersion diagram in frequency-wavenumber space. The asymptotic approximations of the dispersion diagrams, and the wavefields, so obtained are then cross-validated via detailed comparison with finite element method simulations in both one and two dimensions.

In non-destructive evaluation guided wave inspections, the elastic structure to be inspected is often embedded within other elastic media and the ensuing leaky waves are complex and non-trivial to compute; we consider the canonical example of an elastic waveguide surrounded by other elastic materials that demonstrates the fundamental issues with calculating the leaky waves in such systems. Due to the complex wavenumber solutions required to represent them, leaky waves pose significant challenges to existing numerical methods, with methods that spatially discretise the field to retrieve them suffering from the exponential growth of their amplitude far into the surrounding media. We present a spectral collocation method yielding an accurate and efficient identification of these modes, leaking into elastic half-spaces. We discretise the elastic domains and, depending on the exterior bulk wavespeeds, select appropriate mappings of the discretised domain to complex paths, in which the numerical solution decays and the physics of the problem are preserved. By iterating through all possible radiation cases, the full set of dispersion and attenuation curves are successfully retrieved and validated, where possible, against the commercially available software DISPERSE. As an independent validation, dispersion curves are obtained from finite element simulations of time-dependent waves using Fourier analysis.

The rainbow trapping phenomenon of graded metamaterials can be combined with the fractal spectra of quasiperiodic waveguides to give a metamaterial that performs fractal rainbow trapping. This is achieved through a graded cut-and-project algorithm that yields a projected geometry for which the effective projection angle is graded along its length. As a result, the fractal structure of local band gaps varies with position, leading to broadband fractal rainbow trapping. We demonstrate this principle by designing an acoustic waveguide, which is characterised using theory, simulation and experiments.

Understanding the generation of mechanical stress in drying, particle-laden films is important for a wide range of industrial processes. The cantilever experiment allows the stress in a drying film that has been deposited onto a thin plate to be quantified. Mechanical stresses in the film are transmitted to the plate and drive bending. Mathematical modelling enables the film stress to be inferred from measurements of the plate deflection. The aim of this paper is to present simplified models of the cantilever experiment that have been derived from the time-dependent equations of continuum mechanics using asymptotic methods. The film is described using nonlinear poroelasticity and the plate using nonlinear elasticity. In contrast to Stoney-like formulae, the simplified models account for films with non-uniform thickness and stress. The film model reduces to a single differential equation that can be solved independently of the plate equations. The plate model reduces to an extended form of the Foppl-von Karman (FvK) equations that accounts for gradients in the longitudinal traction acting on the plate surface. Consistent boundary conditions for the FvK equations are derived by resolving the Saint-Venant boundary layers at the free edges of the plate. The asymptotically reduced models are in excellent agreement with finite element solutions of the full governing equations. As the P\'eclet number increases, the time evolution of the plate deflection changes from $t$ to $t^{1/2}$, in agreement with experiments.

Precise manipulation of the direction and re-direction of vibrational wave energy is a key demand in wave physics and engineering. We consider the paradigm of a finite frame-like structure and the requirement to channel energy away from critical regions, leaving them vibration-free, and redirect energy along edges towards energy concentrators for damping or energy harvesting. We design an exemplar frame metamaterial, combining two distinct areas of wave physics. Firstly, topological edge states taking an unconventional tetrachiral lattice. We control these highly localised protected edge states leveraging a hierarchy of scales through the addition of micro-resonators that impose tuneable symmetry breaking and reconfigurable mass. This allows us to achieve precise positional control in the macro-scale frame lattice, thereby opening opportunities for robust signal transport and vibration control. Experiments, theory, simulation are all utilised to provide a comprehensive analysis and interpretation of the physics.

Bounded domains have discrete eigenfrequencies/spectra, and cavities with different boundaries and areas have different spectra. A general methodology for isospectral twinning, whereby the spectra of different cavities are made to coincide, is created by combining ideas from across physics including transformation optics, inverse problems and metamaterial cloaking. We twin a hexagonal drum with a deformed hexagonal drum using a non-singular coordinate transform that adjusts the deformed shape by mapping a near boundary domain to a zone of heterogeneous anisotropic medium. Splines define the mapping zone for twinning these two drums and we verify isospectrality by finite element analysis., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Introducing an axis of reflectional symmetry in a quasicrystal leads to the creation of localised edge modes that can be used to build waveguides. We develop theory that characterises reflection-induced localised modes in materials that are formed by recursive tiling rules. This general theory treats a one-dimensional continuous differential model and describes a broad class of both quasicrystalline and periodic materials. We present an analysis of a material based on the Fibonacci sequence, which has previously been shown to have exotic, Cantor-like spectra with very wide spectral gaps. Our approach provides a way to create localised edge modes at frequencies within these spectral gaps, giving strong and stable wave localisation. We also use our general framework to make a comparison with reflection-induced modes in periodic materials. These comparisons show that while quasicrystalline waveguides enjoy enhanced robustness over periodic materials in certain settings, the benefits are less clear if the decay rates are matched. This shows the need to carefully consider equivalent structures when making robustness comparisons and to draw conclusions on a case-by-case basis, depending on the specific application.

We derive analytical solutions based on singular Green's functions, which enable efficient computations of scattering simulations or Floquet-Bloch dispersion relations for waves propagating through an elastic plate, whose surface is patterned by periodic arrays of elastic beams. Our methodology is versatile and allows us to solve a range of problems regarding arrangements of multiple beams per primitive cell, over Bragg to deep-subwavelength scales; we cross-verify against finite element numerical simulations to gain further confidence in our approach, which relies upon the hypothesis of Euler-Bernoulli beam theory considerably simplifying continuity conditions such that each beam can be replaced by point forces and moments applied to the neutral plane of the plate. The representations of Green's functions by Fourier series or Fourier transforms readily follows, yielding rapid and accurate analytical schemes. The accuracy and flexibility of our solutions are demonstrated by engineering topologically non-trivial states, from primitive cells with broken spatial symmetries, following the phononic analogue of the Quantum Valley Hall Effect (QVHE). Topologically protected states are produced and coexist along: interfaces between adjoining chiral-mirrored bulk media and edges between one such chiral bulk and the surrounding bare elastic plate, allowing topological circuits to be designed with robust waveguiding; these topologically non-trivial states exist within near flexural resonances of the constituent beams of the phononic crystal, and hence can be tuned into a deep-subwavelength regime.

Leaky waves are an important class of waves, particularly for guiding waves along structures embedded within another medium; a mismatch in wavespeeds often leads to leakage of energy from the waveguide, or interface, into the medium, which consequently attenuates the guided wave. The accurate and efficient identification of theoretical solutions for leaky waves is a key requirement for the choices of modes and frequencies required for non-destructive evaluation inspection techniques. We choose a typical situation to study: an elastic waveguide with a fluid on either side. Historically, leaky waves are identified via root-finding methods that have issues with conditioning, or, numerical methods` that struggle with the exponential growth of solutions at infinity. By building upon a spectral collocation method, we show how it can be adjusted to find exponentially growing solutions, i.e. leaky waves, leading to an accurate, fast and efficient identification of their dispersion properties. The key concept required is a mapping, in the fluid region, that allows for exponential growth of the physical solution at infinity, whilst the mapped numerical setting decays. We illustrate this by studying leaky Lamb waves in an elastic waveguide immersed between two different fluids and verify this using the commercially available software Disperse.

Motivated by topologically protected states in wave physics, we study localised eigenmodes in one-dimensional periodic media with defects. The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model (the canonical example of a one-dimensional system with topologically protected localised defect states) is used to demonstrate the method. Our approach can be used to describe two broad classes of perturbations to periodic differential problems: those caused by inserting a finite-sized piece of arbitrary material and those caused by creating an interface between two different periodic media. The results presented here characterise the existence of localised eigenmodes in each case and, when they exist, determine their eigenfrequencies and provide concise analytic results that quantify the decay rate of these modes. These results are obtained using both high-frequency homogenisation and transfer matrix analysis, with good agreement between the two methods.

We develop a theory for drying-induced stresses in sessile, poroelastic drops undergoing evaporation on rigid surfaces. Using a lubrication-like approximation, the governing equations of three-dimensional nonlinear poroelasticity are reduced to a single thin-film equation for the drop thickness. We find that thin drops experience compressive elastic stresses but the total in-plane stresses are tensile. The mechanical response of the drop is dictated by the initial profile of the solid skeleton, which controls the in-plane deformation, the dominant components of elastic stress, and sets a limit on the depth of delamination that can potentially occur. Our theory suggests that the alignment of desiccation fractures in colloidal drops is selected by the shape of the drop at the point of gelation. We propose that the emergence of three distinct fracture patterns in dried blood drops is a consequence of a non-monotonic drop profile at gelation. We also show that depletion fronts, which separate wet and dry solid, can invade the drop from the contact line and localise the generation of mechanical stress during drying. Finally, the finite element method is used to explore the stress profiles in drops with large contact angles.

Motivated by the importance of lattice structures in multiple fields, we investigate the propagation of flexural waves in a thin woven plate augmented with two classes of metastructures for wave mitigation and guiding, namely metabarriers and metalenses. The cellular architecture of this plate invokes the well-known octet topology, while the metadevices rely on novel customized octets either comprising spherical masses added to the midpoint of their struts or variable node thickness. We numerically determine the dispersion curves of a doubly-periodic array of octets, which produce a broad bandgap whose underlying physics is elucidated and leveraged as a design paradigm, allowing the construction of a metabarrier effective for inhibiting the transmission of waves. More sophisticated effects emerge upon parametric analyses of the added masses and node thickness, leading to graded designs that spatially filter waves through an enlarged bandgap via rainbow trapping. Additionally, Luneburg and Maxwell metalenses are realized using the spatial modulation of the tuning parameters and numerically tested. Wavefronts impinging on these structures are progressively curved within the inhomogeneous media and steered toward a focal point. Our results yield new perspectives for the use of octet-like lattices, paving the way for promising applications in vibration isolation and energy focusing.

Scholte modes that are localized between a submerged axisymmetric-structured elastic plate and surrounding fluid can undergo mode conversion via Umklapp diffraction into radiative modes; this radiative response is verified by experiments that show focussing of underwater sound across a broad range of frequencies. The diffracted beams, that form a cone, are engineered to exist at a desired spatial position, associated with an abrupt change in the patterning of the plate. These structures take the form of grooves present only on one side of the plate, yet the focussing phenomena is achieved on both sides, even as viewed from the flat surface., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

Topological photonic edge states, protected by chiral symmetry, are attractive for guiding wave energy as they can allow for more robust guiding and greater control of light than alternatives; however, for photonics, chiral symmetry is often broken by long-range interactions. We look to overcome this difficulty by exploiting the topology of networks, consisting of voids and narrow connecting channels, formed by the spaces between closely spaced perfect conductors. In the limit of low frequencies and narrow channels, these void-channel systems have a direct mapping to analogous discrete mass-spring systems in an asymptotically rigorous manner and therefore only have short-range interactions. We demonstrate that the photonic analogues of topological tight-binding models that are protected by chiral symmetries, such as the SSH model and square-root semimetals, are reproduced for these void-channel networks with appropriate boundary conditions. We systematically engineer a series of square and rectangular phononic crystals to create experimental realisations of complex topological phononic circuits. The exotic topological transport observed is wholly reliant upon the underlying structure which must belong to either a square or rectangular lattice system and not to any hexagonal-based structure. The phononic system chosen consists of a periodic array of square steel bars which partitions acoustic waves in water over a broadband range of frequencies (~0.5 MHz). An ultrasonic transducer launches an acoustic pulse which propagates along a domain wall, before encountering a nodal point, from which the acoustic signal partitions towards three exit ports. Numerical simulations are performed to clearly illustrate the highly resolved edge states as well as corroborate our experimental findings. To achieve complete control over the flow of energy, power division and redirection devices are required. The tunability afforded by our designs, in conjunction with the topological robustness of the modes, will result in their assimilation into acoustical devices.

The phenomenon of selective diffraction is extended to in-plane elastic waves and we design surface corrugated periodic laminates that incorporate crystal momentum transfer which, due to the rich physics embedded within the vector elastic system, results in frequency, angle and wave-type selective diffraction. The resulting devices are elastic grating couplers, with additional capabilities as compared to analogous scalar electromagnetic couplers, in that the elastic couplers possess the ability to split and independently redirect, through selective negative refraction, the two body waves present in the vector elastic system: compressional (P) and shear-vertical (SV) elastic waves. We consider the mixing of a viscous fluid by the rotation of a pitched blade turbine inside an open, cylindrical tank, with air as the lighter fluid above. To examine the flow and interfacial dynamics, we utilise a highly-parallelised implementation of a hybrid front-tracking/level-set method that employs a domain-decomposition parallelisation strategy. Our numerical technique is designed to capture faithfully complex interfacial deformation, and changes of topology, including interface rupture and dispersed phase coalescence. As shown via transient, three-dimensional direct numerical simulations, the impeller induces the formation of primary vortices that arise in many idealised rotating flows as well as several secondary vortical structures resembling Kelvin-Helmholtz, vortex breakdown, blade tip vortices, and end-wall corner vortices. As the rotation rate increases, a transition to `aeration' is observed when the interface reaches the rotating blades leading to the entrainment of air bubbles into the viscous fluid and the creation of a bubbly, rotating, free surface flow. Cloaking elastic waves has, in contrast to the cloaking of electromagnetic waves, remained a fundamental challenge: the latter successfully uses the invariance of Maxwell's equations, from which the field of transformational optics has emerged, whereas the elastic Navier equations are not invariant under coordinate transformations. Our aim is to overcome this challenge, at least in practical terms, and thereby unlock applications in mechanics, ultrasound, vibration mitigation, non-destructive evaluation and elastic wave control. We achieve near-cloaking by recognising that, despite the lack of invariance, a decoupling into a system of form invariant potential equations together with a quantifiable approximation, can be used effectively in many cases to control the flow of elastodynamic waves. Here, in particular we \rvc{focus} on the efficiency and practicability of the proposed near-cloaking which is illustrated using carpet cloaks to hide surface defects from incoming compressional and shear in-plane waves and from surface elastic Rayleigh waves., Comment: 24 figures

The breathing honeycomb lattice hosts a topologically non-trivial bulk phase due to the crystalline-symmetry of the system. Pseudospin-dependent edge states which emerge at the interface between trivial and non-trivial regions can be used for directional propagation of energy. Using the plasmonic metasurface as an example system, we probe these states in the near and far-field using a semi-analytical model. We give the conditions under which directionality is observed and show that it is source position dependent. By probing with circularly-polarized magnetic dipoles out of the plane, we first characterize modes along the interface in terms of the enhancement of source emission due to the metasurface. We then excite from the far-field with non-zero orbital angular momentum beams. The position dependent directionality holds true for all classical wave systems with a breathing honeycomb lattice. Diverting, and controlling, elastic vibrations impacting upon infrastructure is a major challenge for seismic hazard mitigation, and for the reduction of machine noise and vehicle vibration in the urban environment. Seismic metamaterials (SMs), with their inherent ability to manipulate wave propagation, provide a key route for overcoming the technological hurdles involved in this challenge. Engineering the structure of the SM serves as a basis to tune and enhance its functionality, and inspired by split rings, swiss-rolls, notch-shaped and labyrinthine designs of elementary cells in electromagnetic and mechanical metamaterials, we investigate altering the structure geometries of SMs with the aim of creating large bandgaps \textcolor{black}{in a subwavelength regime}. We show that square stiff inclusions, perform better in comparison to circular ones, whilst keeping the same filling fraction. En route to enhancing the bandgap, we have also studied the performance of SMs with different constituent materials; we find that steel columns, as inclusions, show large bandgaps, however, the columns are too large for steel to be a feasible material in practical or financial terms. Non-reinforced concrete would be preferable for industry level scaling up of the technology because, concrete is cost-effective, easy to cast directly at the construction site and easy to provide arbitrary geometry of the structure. As a part of this study, we show that concrete columns can also be designed to exhibit bandgaps if we cast them within a soft soil coating surrounding the protected area for various civil structures like a bridge, building, oil pipelines etc.

We design extremely-thin acoustic metasurfaces, providing a versatile platform for the manipulation of reflected pressure fields, that are constructed from mass loads and stretched membranes fixed to a periodic rigid framework. These metasurfaces demonstrate deeply subwavelength control and can have thicknesses an order of magnitude less than those based around Helmholtz resonators. Each sub-unit of the metasurface is resonant at a frequency tuned geometrically, this tunability provides phase control and using a set of finely tuned membrane resonators we create a phase-grating metasurface. This surface is designed to exhibit all-angle negative reflections with the ratio of wavelength, $\lambda$, to thickness, $h$, of $\lambda/h\approx 23.1$, and to create a flat mirror using the phase profile of an elliptic reflecting mirror. A further important acoustic application is to sound diffusers and we proceed to design a deeply subwavelength membrane-based meta-diffuser that can be two orders of magnitude thinner than the operating wavelength, i.e. thickness $\approx\lambda/102$. This paves the way for developing advanced acoustic metasurfaces with applicability to functional acoustic devices in sound-related industries., Comment: 7 figures

We amalgamate two fundamental designs from distinct areas of wave control in physics, and place them in the setting of elasticity. Graded elastic metasurfaces, so-called metawedges, are combined with the now classical Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model from the field of topological insulators. The resulting structures form one-dimensional graded-SSH-metawedges that support multiple, simultaneous, topologically protected edge states. These robust, enhanced localised modes are leveraged for applications in elastic energy harvesting using the piezoelectric effect. The designs we develop are first motivated by applying the SSH model to mass-loaded Kirchhoff-Love thin elastic plates. We then extend these ideas to using graded resonant rods, and create SSH models, coupled to elastic beams and full elastic half-spaces.

We create hybrid topological-photonic localisation of light by introducing concepts from the field of topological matter to that of photonic crystal fiber arrays. S-polarized obliquely propagating electromagnetic waves are guided by hexagonal, and square, lattice topological systems along an array of infinitely conducting fibers. The theory utilises perfectly periodic arrays that, in frequency space, have gapped Dirac cones producing band gaps demarcated by pronounced valleys locally imbued with a nonzero local topological quantity. These broken symmetry-induced stop-bands allow for localised guidance of electromagnetic edge-waves along the crystal fiber axis. Finite element simulations, complemented by asymptotic techniques, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed designs for localising energy in finite arrays in a robust manner.

The effect of surfactants on the tail and film dynamics of elongated gas bubbles propagating through circular capillary tubes is investigated by means of an extensive three-dimensional numerical study using a hybrid front-tracking/level-set method. The focus is on the visco-inertial regime, which occurs when the Reynolds number of the flow is much larger than unity. Under these conditions, `clean' bubbles exhibit interface undulations in the proximity of the tail \cite{Magnini_prf_2017}, with an amplitude that increases with the Reynolds number. We perform a systematic analysis of the impact of a wide range of surfactant properties, including elasticity, bulk surfactant concentration, solubility, and diffusivity, on the bubble and flow dynamics in the presence of inertial effects. The results show that the introduction of surfactants is effective in suppressing the tail undulations as they tend to accumulate near the bubble tail. Here, large Marangoni stresses are generated, which lead to a local `rigidification' of the bubble. This effect becomes more pronounced for larger surfactant elasticities and adsorption depths. At reduced surfactant solubility, a thicker rigid film region forms at the bubble rear, where a Couette film flow is established, while undulations still appear at the trailing edge of the downstream `clean' film region. In such conditions, the bubble length becomes an influential parameter, with short bubbles becoming completely rigid., Comment: 20 pages and 12 figures

We demonstrate that a rainbow-based metasurface, created by a graded array of resonant rods attached to an elastic beam, operates as a mechanical delay-line by slowing down surface elastic waves to take advantage of wave interaction with resonance. Experiments demonstrate that the rainbow effect reduces the amplitude of the propagating wave in the host structure. At the same time it dramatically increases both the period of interaction between the waves and the resonators, and the wavefield amplitude in the rod endowed with the harvester. Increased energy is thus fed into the resonators over time, we show the enhanced energy harvesting capabilities of this system.

We combine two different fields, topological physics and graded metamaterials to design a topological metasurface to control and redirect elastic waves. We strategically design a two-dimensional crystalline perforated elastic plate, using a square lattice, %consisting of bore holes, that hosts symmetry-induced topological edge states. By concurrently allowing the elastic substrate to spatially vary in depth, we are able to convert the incident slow wave into a series of robust modes, with differing envelope modulations. This adiabatic transition localises the incoming energy into a concentrated region where it can then be damped or extracted. For larger transitions, different behaviour is observed; the incoming energy propagates along the interface before being partitioned into two disparate chiral beams. This "topological rainbow" effect leverages two main concepts, namely the quantum valley-Hall effect and the rainbow effect usually associated with electromagnetic metamaterials. The topological rainbow effect transcends specific physical systems, hence, the phenomena we describe can be transposed to other wave physics. Due to the directional tunability of the elastic energy by geometry our results have far-reaching implications for applications such as switches, filters and energy-harvesters.

We study the canonical problem of wave scattering by periodic arrays, either of infinite or finite extent, of Neumann scatterers in the plane; the characteristic lengthscale of the scatterers is considered small relative to the lattice period. We utilise the method of matched asymptotic expansions, together with Fourier series representations, to create an efficient and accurate numerical approach for finding the dispersion curves associated with Floquet-Bloch waves through an infinite array of scatterers. The approach lends itself to direct scattering problems for finite arrays and we illustrate the flexibility of these asymptotic representations on topical examples from topological wave physics.

Important distinctions are made between two related wave control mechanisms that act to spatially separate frequency components; these so-called rainbow mechanisms either slow or reverse guided waves propagating along a graded line array. We demonstrate an important nuance distinguishing rainbow reflection from genuine rainbow trapping and show the implications of this distinction for energy harvesting designs. The difference between these related mechanisms is highlighted using a design methodology, applied to flexural waves on mass loaded thin Kirchhoff-Love elastic plates, and emphasised through simulations for energy harvesting in the setting of elasticity, by elastic metasurfaces of graded line arrays of resonant rods atop a beam. The delineation of these two effects, reflection and trapping, allows us to characterise the behaviour of forced line array systems and predict their capabilities for trapping, conversion and focusing of energy., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Elastic waves guided along surfaces dominate applications in geophysics, ultrasonic inspection, mechanical vibration, and surface acoustic wave devices; precise manipulation of surface Rayleigh waves and their coupling with polarized body waves presents a challenge that offers to unlock the flexibility in wave transport required for efficient energy harvesting and vibration mitigation devices. We design elastic metasurfaces, consisting of a graded array of rod resonators attached to an elastic substrate that, together with critical insight from Umklapp scattering in phonon-electron systems, allow us to leverage the transfer of crystal momentum; we mode-convert Rayleigh surface waves into bulk waves that form tunable beams. Experiments, theory and simulation verify that these tailored Umklapp mechanisms play a key role in coupling surface Rayleigh waves to reversed bulk shear and compressional waves independently, thereby creating passive self-phased arrays allowing for tunable redirection and wave focusing within the bulk medium., Comment: 5 pages of text with 3 figures plus 3 pages of supplemental text with 5 supplemental figures

We investigate symmetry-protected topological water waves within a strategically engineered square lattice system. Thus far, symmetry-protected topological modes in hexagonal systems have primarily been studied in electromagnetism and acoustics, i.e. dispersionless media. Herein, we show experimentally how crucial geometrical properties of square structures allow for topological transport that is ordinarily forbidden within conventional hexagonal structures. We perform numerical simulations that take into account the inherent dispersion within water waves and devise a topological insulator that supports symmetry-protected transport along the domain walls. Our measurements, viewed with a high-speed camera under stroboscopic illumination, unambiguously demonstrate the valley-locked transport of water waves within a non-hexagonal structure. Due to the tunability of the energy's directionality by geometry, our results could be used for developing highly-efficient energy harvesters, filters and beam-splitters within dispersive media.

Water waves in natural environments are typically broadband, nonlinear and dynamic phenomena. Taking concepts developed for slow light in optics, we address the challenge of designing arrays to control the spatial distribution of wave energy, and amplify target frequencies at specified locations. Experiments on incident waves interacting with a chirped array of eight vertical cylinders demonstrate significant amplifications as predicted numerically, and provide motivation for application to energy harvesting., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We experimentally investigate the valley-Hall effect for interfacial edge states, highlighting the importance of the modal patterns, between geometrically distinct regions within a structured elastic plate. These experiments, for vibration, are at a scale where detailed measurements are taken throughout the system and not just at the input/output ports; this exposes the coupling between geometrically distinct modes that underlie the differences between wave transport around gentle and sharp bends.

The coupled light-matter modes supported by plasmonic metasurfaces can be combined with topological principles to yield subwavelength topological valley states of light. We give a systematic presentation of the topological valley states available for lattices of metallic nanoparticles: All possible lattices with hexagonal symmetry are considered, as well as valley states emerging on a square lattice. Several unique effects which have yet to be explored in plasmonics are identified, such as robust guiding, filtering and splitting of modes, as well as dual-band effects. We demonstrate these by means of scattering computations based on the coupled dipole method that encompass the full electromagnetic interactions between nanoparticles., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We design ultra-thin, entirely flat, dielectric lenses using crystal momentum transfer, so-called Umklapp processes, achieving the required wave control for a new mechanism of flat lensing; physically, these lenses take advantage of abrupt changes in the periodicity of a structured line array so there is an overlap between the first Brillouin zone of one medium with the second Brillouin zone of the other. At the interface between regions of different periodicity, surface, array guided, waves hybridise into reversed propagating beams directed into the material exterior to the array. This control, and redirection, of waves then enables the device to operate as a Pendry-Veselago lens that is one unit cell in width, with no need for an explicit negative refractive index. Simulations using an array embedded in a slab of silicon nitride ($\text{Si}_3\text{N}_4$) in air, operating at visible wavelengths between $420 - 500\text{THz}$ demonstrate the effect., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. 1 page of supplemental material with 2 additional figures

We study a plasmonic metasurface that supports pseudospin dependent edge states confined at a subwavelength scale, considering full electrodynamic interactions including retardation and radiative effects. The spatial symmetry of the lattice of plasmonic nanoparticles gives rise to edge states with properties reminiscent of the quantum spin Hall effect in topological insulators. However, unlike the spin-momentum locking characteristic of topological insulators, these modes are not purely unidirectional and their propagation properties can be understood by analysing the spin angular momentum of the electromagnetic field, which is inhomogenous in the plane of the lattice. The local sign of the spin angular momentum determines the propagation direction of the mode under a near-field excitation source. In elastic wave systems, combining the powerful concepts of resonance and spatial grading within structured surface arrays enable resonant metasurfaces to exhibit broadband wave focusing, mode conversion from surface (Rayleigh) waves to bulk (shear) waves, and spatial frequency selection. Devices built around these concepts allow for precise control of surface waves, often with structures that are subwavelength, and utilise rainbow trapping that separates the signal spatially by frequency. Rainbow trapping yields large amplifications of displacement at the resonator positions where each frequency component accumulates. We investigate whether this amplification, and the associated control, can be used to create energy harvesting devices; the potential advantages and disadvantages of using graded resonant devices as energy harvesters is considered. We concentrate upon elastic plate models for which the A0 mode dominates, and take advantage of the large displacement amplitudes in graded resonant arrays of rods, to design innovative metasurfaces that focus waves for enhanced piezoelectric sensing and energy harvesting. Numerical simulation allows us to identify the advantages of such graded metasurface devices and quantify its efficiency, we also develop accurate models of the phenomena and extend our analysis to that of an elastic half-space and Rayleigh surface waves.

We introduce a new efficient algorithm for Helmholtz problems in perforated domains with the design of the scheme allowing for possibly large wavenumbers. Our method is based upon the Wavelet-based Edge Multiscale Finite Element Method (WEMsFEM) as proposed recently in [14]. For a regular coarse mesh with mesh size H, we establish O(H) convergence of this algorithm under the resolution assumption, and with the level parameter being sufficiently large. The performance of the algorithm is demonstrated by extensive 2-dimensional numerical tests including those motivated by photonic crystals.

Metre size inertial resonators located in the ground have been theoretically shown to interact with a seismic wave (attenuation, band gaps) to enable protection of surface structures such as buildings. The challenge for Civil Engineering is to both reduce the size of these resonators and to increase their efficiency. Here we explore steel spheres, connected to a concrete bulk medium, either by a coating of rubber, or rubber and steel ligaments, or air and steel ligaments. We show that for a cubic lattice periodicity of 1 metre, we achieve stop bands in the frequency range 14 to 20 Hz; by splitting spheres in 2 and 8 pieces, we tune down the stop bands frequencies and further increase their bandwidth. We thus demonstrate we are able to provide a variety of inertial resonators with stop bands below 10 Hz i.e., in the frequency range of interest for earthquake engineering.

We outline some recent research advances on the control of elastic waves in thin and thick plates, that have occurred since the large scale experiment [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 133901, 2014] that demonstrated significant interaction of surface seismic waves with holes structuring sedimentary soils at the meter scale. We further investigate the seismic wave trajectories in soils structured with buildings. A significant substitution of soils by inclusions, acting as foundations, raises the question of the effective dynamic properties of these structured soils. Buildings, in the case of perfect elastic conditions for both soil and buildings, are shown to interact and strongly influence elastic surface waves; such site-city seismic interactions were pointed out in [Bulletin of Seismological Society of America 92, 794-811, 2002], and we investigate a variety of scenarios to illustrate the variety of behaviours possible., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Motivated by flat lensing effects, now commonplace utilising negative refraction with finite slabs, we create negative refraction upon a graded line-array. We do so in the setting of flexural waves on a structured Kirchhoff--Love elastic plate, as a paradigm in wave physics, that has direct extensions to electromagnetic and acoustic wave systems. These graded line arrays are geometrically simple and provide strong coupling from the array into the bulk. Thorough analysis of the dispersion curves, and associated mode structure, of these meta--arrays, supported by mode coupling theory, creates array guided wave (AGW) reversal and hybridisation into the bulk that leads to striking wave control via generalised flat lensing., Comment: Letter: 5 pages, 6 figures. We create a passive wave splitter, created purely by geometry, to engineer three-way beam splitting in electromagnetism in transverse electric polarisation. We do so by considering arrangements of Indium Phosphide dielectric pillars in air, in particular we place several inclusions within a cell that is then extended periodically upon a square lattice. Hexagonal lattice structures more commonly used in topological valleytronics but, as we discuss, three-way splitting is only possible using a square, or rectangular, lattice. To achieve splitting and transport around a sharp bend we use accidental, and not symmetry-induced, Dirac cones. Within each cell pillars are either arranged around a triangle or square; we demonstrate the mechanism of splitting and why it does not occur for one of the cases. The theory is developed and full scattering simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed designs.
