This study analyses the teachers' perceptions of their capacity for designing and developing STE(A)M projects in a professional development programme (PD) conducted through a collaborative educational research project carried out between the University and the centres by the IndagaSTEAM Escuela project. Incorporating STEAM education in the classroom poses various challenges to teachers, among other aspects, associated with conceptualising, designing and applying the curricular integration of STE(A)M subjects, requiring training programs updates for this purpose. Hence, the design developed promotes applying an inquiry-based approach and adapting the integrative STE(A)M curriculum in the Primary Education classroom. Challenges and opportunities of the teachers' involvement have been analysed as a case study undertaken longitudinally between 2019 and 2022. Data have been compiled from a varied typology (rubrics evaluation, ad hoc interviews and questionnaires, using the Likert scale), which give an account of the global perception these educators have, on the one hand, of STE(A) M education and the inquiry approach and, on the other hand, of the collaborative learning scenario from the framework used.

We report the discovery of Cerberus, an extremely red object detected with the MIRI Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS) observations in the F1000W filter of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. The object is detected at signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) ∼ 6, with F1000W ∼ 27 mag, and undetected in the NIRCam data gathered by the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), fainter than the 30.0–30.5 mag 5 σ detection limits in individual bands, as well as in the MIDIS F560W ultradeep data (∼29 mag, 5 σ ). Abstract Objective The objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence of epilepsy with Tonic–Clonic (TC) seizures in rural areas of the Bolivian Gran Chaco and to evaluate the usefulness of telemedicine in this context. Methods The study was carried out in the Isozo Area, southern‐eastern Bolivia. Twenty‐five rural communities with a population of 8258 inhabitants were included in the survey. Trained community‐health workers administered a validated single screening question to the householders (stage I). A second face‐to‐face questionnaire was administered to each positive subject (stage II). At stage II subjects were also screened using the smartphone app “Epilepsy Diagnosis Aid”. Subjects screened positive at stage II underwent a complete neurological examination to confirm the diagnosis (stage III). Due to the COVID‐19 lockdown, some subjects have been evaluated through a digital platform (Zoom®). Results One‐thousand two‐hundred and thirteen interviews were performed at stage I, corresponding to a total screened population of 6692 inhabitants. Thirty‐eight screened positive were identified at stage I and II and of these, 28 people with epilepsy were identified, giving an overall prevalence of 4.2/1000 (95% CI 2.6–5.7). Prevalence rate steeply increased with age reaching a peak of 7.9/1000 in the population aged 20–29 years without significant differences between women and men. For almost 50% of the screened positive subjects, confirmation of epilepsy by a neurologist at stage III was achieved through simple videoconsultation. After a simultaneous awareness campaign, 22 self‐reported PWE requested a consultation and, among them, 11 had a diagnosis of epilepsy confirmed. Significance This study shows a prevalence estimate close to those reported for LMIC. Simple videoconsultation and specific apps may be valuable tools in epidemiological research. Awareness campaigns are important allies for a full case identification, particularly in contexts where higher rates of stigma are recorded.

JWST spectroscopy has revolutionized our understanding of galaxies in the early Universe. Covering wavelengths up to 5.3 μ m, NIRSpec can detect rest-frame optical H α emission lines out to z = 7 and [O iii ] to z = 9.5. Observing these lines in more distant galaxies requires longer wavelength spectroscopy with MIRI. Here we present MIRI Medium Resolution Spectrograph integral field unit observations of the lensed galaxy merger MACS0647–JD at z = 10.165. With exposure times of 4.2 hr in each of two bands (SHORT and LONG), we detect H α at 9 σ , [O iii ] λ 5008 at 11 σ , and [O iii ] λ 4960 at 3 σ . Combined with previously reported NIRSpec spectroscopy that yielded seven emission lines including the auroral line [O iii ] λ 4363, we present the first direct metallicity measurement of a z > 10 galaxy: $12+\mathrm{log}({\rm{O}}/{\rm{H}})=7.79\pm 0.09$ , or ${0.13}_{-0.03}^{+0.02}\,{Z}_{\odot }$ . This is similar to galaxies at z ∼ 4–9 with direct metallicity measurements, though higher than expected given the high specific star formation rate log(sSFR/yr ^−1 ) = −7.4 ± 0.3. We further constrain the ionization parameter $\mathrm{log}(U)$ = −1.9 ± 0.1, ionizing photon production efficiency log( ξ _ion ) = 25.3 ± 0.1, and SFR = 5.0 ± 0.6 M _⊙ yr ^−1 within the past 10 Myr. These observations demonstrate the combined power of JWST NIRSpec and MIRI for studying galaxies in the first 500 million years.

We present JWST/NIRSpec high-resolution G395H/F290LP spectroscopy of MACS0647−JD, a gravitationally lensed galaxy merger at z = 10.167. The new spectroscopy, which is acquired for the two lensed images (JD1 and JD2), detects and resolves emission lines in the rest-frame ultraviolet and blue optical, including the resolved [O ii ] λ λ 3726, 3729 doublet, [Ne iii ] λ 3870, He i λ 3890, H δ , H γ , and [O iii ] λ 4363. This is the first observation of the resolved [O ii ] λ λ 3726, 3729 doublet for a galaxy at z > 8. We measure a line flux ratio [O ii ] λ 3729/ λ 3726 = 0.9 ± 0.3, which corresponds to an estimated electron density of $\mathrm{log}({n}_{e}/{\mathrm{cm}}^{-3})=2.9\pm 0.5$ . This is significantly higher than the electron densities of local galaxies reported in the literature. We compile measurements from the literature and further analyze the redshift evolution of n _e . We find that the redshift evolution follows the power-law form of n _e = A × (1 + z ) ^p with $A={54}_{-23}^{+31}$ cm ^−3 and $p={1.2}_{-0.4}^{+0.4}$ . This power-law form may be explained by a combination of metallicity and morphological evolution of galaxies, which become, on average, more metal poor and more compact with increasing redshift.

We investigate the properties of strong (H β + [O iii ]) emitters before and after the end of the “Epoch of Reionization” from z = 8 to z = 5.5. We make use of ultradeep JWST / NIRCam imaging in the parallel field (P2) of the MIRI Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS) in the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field (H-XDF), in order to select prominent (H β + [O iii ]) emitters (with rest-frame equivalent width (EW _0 ) ≳ 100 Å) at z = 5.5–7, based on their flux density enhancement in the F356W band with respect to the spectral energy distribution continuum. We complement our selection with other (H β + [O iii ]) emitters from the literature at similar and higher ( z = 7−8) redshifts. We find (nonindependent) anticorrelations between EW _0 (H β + [O iii ]) and both galaxy stellar mass and age, in agreement with previous studies, and a positive correlation with specific star formation rate (sSFR). On the SFR– M ^⋆ plane, the (H β + [O iii ]) emitters populate both the star formation main sequence and the starburst region, which become indistinguishable at low stellar masses ( ${\mathrm{log}}_{10}({M}^{\star })\lt 7.5$ ). We find tentative evidence for a nonmonotonic relation between EW _0 (H β + [O iii ]) and SFR, such that both parameters correlate with each other at SFR ≳ 1 M _⊙ yr ^−1 , while the correlation flattens out at lower SFRs. This suggests that low metallicities producing high EW _0 (H β + [O iii ]) could be important at low SFR values. Interestingly, the properties of the strong emitters and other galaxies (33% and 67% of our z = 5.5–7 sample, respectively) are similar, including, in many cases, high sSFR. Therefore, it is crucial to consider both emitters and nonemitters to obtain a complete picture of the cosmic star formation activity around the Epoch of Reionization.

We present deep James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)/Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) F560W observations of a flux-limited, Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA)-selected sample of 28 galaxies at z = 0.5–3.7 in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). The data from the MIRI Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS) reveal the stellar structure of the HUDF galaxies at rest-frame wavelengths of λ > 1 μ m for the first time. We revise the stellar mass estimates using new JWST photometry and find good agreement with pre-JWST analyses; the few discrepancies can be explained by blending issues in the earlier lower-resolution Spitzer data. At z ∼ 2.5, the resolved rest-frame near-infrared (1.6 μ m) structure of the galaxies is significantly more smooth and centrally concentrated than seen by the Hubble Space Telescope at rest-frame 450 nm (F160W), with effective radii of R _e (F560W) = 1–5 kpc and Sérsic indices mostly close to an exponential (disk-like) profile ( n ≈ 1), up to n ≈ 5 (excluding active galactic nuclei). We find an average size ratio of R _e (F560W)/ R _e (F160W) ≈ 0.7 that decreases with stellar mass. The stellar structure of the ALMA-selected galaxies is indistinguishable from a HUDF reference sample of all galaxies with a MIRI flux density greater than 1 μ Jy. We supplement our analysis with custom-made, position-dependent, empirical point-spread function models for the F560W observations. The results imply that a smoother stellar structure is in place in massive gas-rich, star-forming galaxies at “Cosmic Noon,” despite a more clumpy rest-frame optical appearance, placing additional constraints on galaxy formation simulations. As a next step, matched-resolution, resolved ALMA observations will be crucial to further link the mass- and light-weighted galaxy structures to the dusty interstellar medium.

We study the stellar population properties of 182 spectroscopically confirmed (MUSE/VLT) Ly α emitters (LAEs) and 450 photometrically selected Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at z = 2.8–6.7 in the Hubble Extreme Deep Field. Leveraging the combined power of Hubble Space Telescope and JWST NIRCam and MIRI observations, we analyze their rest-frame UV-through-near-IR spectral energy distributions, with MIRI playing a crucial role in robustly assessing the LAEs’ stellar masses and ages. Our LAEs are low-mass objects $({{\rm{log}}}_{10}({M}_{\star }/{M}_{\odot })\simeq 7.5)$ with little or no dust extinction ( E ( B − V ) ≃ 0.1) and a blue UV continuum slope ( β ≃ −2.2). The protoclusters in the epoch of reionization, traced by galaxy overdensity regions, are ideal laboratories for studying the process of stellar assembly and cosmic reionization. We present the spectroscopic confirmation of the core of the most distant protocluster at z = 7.88, A2744-z7p9OD, with the James Webb Space Telescope NIRSpec integral field unit spectroscopy. The core region includes as many as four galaxies detected in [O iii ] 4960 and 5008 Å in a small area of ∼3″ × 3″, corresponding to ∼11 × 11 kpc, after the lensing magnification correction. Three member galaxies are also tentatively detected in dust continuum in Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Band 6, which is consistent with their red ultraviolet continuum slopes, β ∼ −1.3. The member galaxies have stellar masses in the range of log( M _* / M _⊙ ) ∼7.6–9.2 and star formation rates of ∼3–50 M _⊙ yr ^−1 , showing a diversity in their properties. FirstLight cosmological simulations reproduce the physical properties of the member galaxies including the stellar mass, [O iii ] luminosity, and dust-to-stellar mass ratio, and predict that the member galaxies are on the verge of merging in a few to several tens of Myr to become a large galaxy with M _* ∼ 6 × 10 ^9 M _⊙ . The presence of a multiple merger and evolved galaxies in the core region of A2744-z7p9OD indicates that environmental effects are already at work 650 Myr after the Big Bang.

We present the ultraviolet luminosity function and an estimate of the cosmic star formation rate density at 8 < z < 13 derived from deep NIRCam observations taken in parallel with the MIRI Deep Survey of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF), NIRCam covering the parallel field 2. Our deep (40 hr) NIRCam observations reach an F277W magnitude of 30.8 (5 σ ), more than 2 mag deeper than JWST public data sets already analyzed to find high-redshift galaxies. We select a sample of 44 z > 8 galaxy candidates based on their dropout nature in the F115W and/or F150W filters, a high probability for their photometric redshifts, estimated with three different codes, being at z > 8, good fits based on χ ^2 calculations, and predominant solutions compared to z < 8 alternatives. We find mild evolution in the luminosity function from z ∼ 13 to z ∼ 8, i.e., only a small increase in the average number density of ∼0.2 dex, while the faint-end slope and absolute magnitude of the knee remain approximately constant, with values α = − 2.2 ± 0.1, and M ^* = − 20.8 ± 0.2 mag. Comparing our results with the predictions of state-of-the-art galaxy evolution models, we find two main results: (1) a slower increase with time in the cosmic star formation rate density compared to a steeper rise predicted by models; (2) nearly a factor of 10 higher star formation activity concentrated in scales around 2 kpc in galaxies with stellar masses ∼10 ^8 M _⊙ during the first 350 Myr of the universe, z ∼ 12, with models matching better the luminosity density observational estimations ∼150 Myr later, by z ∼ 9.

We make use of JWST medium-band and broadband NIRCam imaging, along with ultradeep MIRI 5.6 μ m imaging, in the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field to identify prominent line emitters at z ≃ 7–8. Out of a total of 58 galaxies at z ≃ 7–8, we find 18 robust candidates (≃31%) for (H β + [O iii ]) emitters, based on their enhanced fluxes in the F430M and F444W filters, with EW _0 (H β +[O iii ]) ≃87–2100 Å. Among these emitters, 16 lie in the MIRI coverage area and 12 exhibit a clear flux excess at 5.6 μ m, indicating the simultaneous presence of a prominent H α emission line with EW _0 (H α ) ≃200–3000 Å. This is the first time that H α emission can be detected in individual galaxies at z > 7. The H α line, when present, allows us to separate the contributions of H β and [O iii ] to the (H β +[O iii ]) complex and derive H α -based star formation rates (SFRs). We find that in most cases [O iii ]/H β > 1. Instead, two galaxies have [O iii ]/H β < 1, indicating that the NIRCam flux excess is mainly driven by H β . Most prominent line emitters are very young starbursts or galaxies on their way to/from the starburst cloud. They make for a cosmic SFR density ${\mathrm{log}}_{10}({\rho }_{{\mathrm{SFR}}_{{\rm{H}}\alpha }}/({M}_{\odot }\,{\mathrm{yr}}^{-1}\,{\mathrm{Mpc}}^{-3}))\simeq -2.35$ , which is about a quarter of the total value ( ${\mathrm{log}}_{10}({\rho }_{{\mathrm{SFR}}_{\mathrm{tot}}}/({M}_{\odot }\,{\mathrm{yr}}^{-1}\,{\mathrm{Mpc}}^{-3}))\simeq -1.76$ ) at z ≃ 7–8. Therefore, the strong H α emitters likely had a significant role in reionization.

Summary The majority of the screening questionnaires for epilepsy have been validated in hospital settings. We previously developed and used for field validation a screening tool to detect generalized tonic‐clonic seizures (GTCS) in the rural communities of the Chaco region of Bolivia. The objective of the present study was to perform a hospital‐based validation of the same questionnaire and to compare the levels of accuracy obtained when validated in the field or in a hospital‐based context. We carried out a hospital‐based validation in the Hospital Hernandez Vera of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, where we enrolled patients affected by epilepsy with GTCS and controls. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV) were calculated. One hundred twenty questionnaires were administered to 59 patients (27 men [45.8%]; mean age ± SD = 32.4 ± 14.2 years) and 61 controls (27 men [44.3%]; mean age ± SD = 32.6 ± 14.3 years). We obtained levels of accuracy of 100%. Sensitivity and PPV were significantly higher than the estimates obtained in the field‐validation study (sensitivity 100% vs 76.3%; PPV 100% vs 69.0%). Our screening questionnaire showed a significantly lower level of sensitivity when validated in the field, confirming that hospital‐based validation can lead to an overestimation of sensitivity.

The Bolivian Chaco is a semiarid region with a low population density, situated in the southeast part of the Plurinational State of Bolivia. Here, despite the improvements of the last 15 years, poverty remains high in rural areas, where social vulnerability is widespread. The Guaraní ethnic group often lives in isolated communities with a low standard of hygiene and sanitation. This epidemiological scenario favors the spread of transmissible diseases, including several parasitic infections belonging to the neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) group. In this area, a long-standing research activity, built upon the synergism between local and foreign institutions, has been established since the late 1980s and helps to fill in the knowledge gap about the epidemiology dynamics of soil-transmitted helminths, vector-borne parasites, and other parasitic diseases. A 35-year history of cooperation programs in parasitology research has contributed to informing local health authorities of the NTD burden in the Bolivian Chaco and, ultimately, supports local healthcare providers in the management of parasitic diseases.

Objetivo: analizar las variables demográficas y diagnósticas que condicionan la demanda asistencial ambulatoria de la consulta neurológica privada por primera vez. Métodos: estudio observacional, descriptivo, retrospectivo, de la demanda de consultas ambulatorias de primera vez en un centro neurológico privado, durante 24 meses (enero-2016 hasta diciembre-2017). La información médica fue obtenida a partir de registros clínicos computarizados registrándose: edad, género y diagnóstico según la Clasificación Internacional de Enfermedades, 10 edición (CIE-10). Resultados: el total de pacientes del estudio fue de 2 372, (60%) fueron mujeres. La edad media fue de 42,6 años ± 18,8 años, (42,20%) son mayores de 65 años. El diagnóstico más frecuente fue cefalea primaria (33,4%); seguido por epilepsia (14%); cervicalgia, dorsalgia y lumbalgia (13,2%), trastornos psiquiátricos (6,5%). En mayores de 65 años el deterioro cognitivo fue el diagnóstico más frecuente (14,68%), seguido de movimientos anormales. Conclusión: Los pacientes neurológicos son predominantemente menores de 65 años y de sexo femenino. La patología más frecuente fue la cefalea primaria.

Introduction: Epilepsy represents an important public health issue, in particular in low and middle-income countries where significant disparities are present in the care available for patients with epilepsy. Treatment cost and unavailability of drugs represent important barriers in treating people with epilepsy especially in rural setting. Aim of the study was to evaluate, by means of routine data, the current real-life clinical practice in epilepsy in the rural communities of the Plurinational State of Bolivia. Treatment activity followed educational campaigns and an anthropological fieldwork over more than 20 years.Material and Methods: Medical records of people with epilepsy (PWE) living in the rural communities of the Bolivian Chaco who received antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), from 2012 to 2016, and were followed-up for at least 1 year were analyzed. Treatment delivery and follow up visits were managed by a neurologist with the support of rural health care workers.Results: From 2012 to 2016, 157 PWE (76 men with a mean age of 24.2 ± 15.7) have been included in the study. Structural epilepsy was the most common type, recorded in 54 cases (34.4%) and the most common reported causes were perinatal factors, present in 11 subjects (20.0%). Almost all patients presented epilepsy with generalized tonic-clonic seizures (91.4%). The most common AED prescribed was phenobarbital followed by carbamazepine. During the follow-up, a dramatic seizures reduction was observed, with 31 subjects (19.7%) being seizures-free at the last follow-up. However, 48 subjects (30.6%) did not assume the medication regularly and 10 interrupted the drug intake. More than 20% of PWE did not receive any financial supports for AEDs. During the follow-up period 10 patients died but only in one case the death was probably caused by epilepsy.Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that PWE in rural areas of the Bolivian Chaco are willing to seek medical attention and to receive antiepileptic treatment. However, improvement in care is needed to assure compliance to AED treatment, including activity to increase awareness toward epilepsy among community members and health staff of the rural communities and to guarantee the coverage of treatment costs and drug supply.

INTRODUCTION:Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases in Latin American Countries (LAC) and epilepsy associated with convulsive seizures is the most frequent type. Therefore, the detection of convulsive seizures is a priority, but a validated Spanish-language screening tool to detect convulsive seizures is not available. We performed a field validation to evaluate the accuracy of a Spanish-language questionnaire to detect convulsive seizures in rural Bolivia using a three-stage design. The questionnaire was also administered face-to-face, using a two-stage design, to evaluate the difference in accuracy. METHODS:The study was carried out in the rural communities of the Gran Chaco region. The questionnaire consists of a single screening question directed toward the householders and a confirmatory section administered face-to-face to the index case. Positive subjects underwent a neurological examination to detect false positive and true positive subjects. To estimate the proportion of false negative, a random sample of about 20% of the screened negative underwent a neurological evaluation. RESULTS:792 householders have been interviewed representing a population of 3,562 subjects (52.2% men; mean age 24.5 ± 19.7 years). We found a sensitivity of 76.3% (95% CI 59.8-88.6) with a specificity of 99.6% (95% CI 99.4-99.8). The two-stage design showed only a slightly higher sensitivity respect to the three-stage design. CONCLUSION:Our screening tool shows a good accuracy and can be easily used by trained health workers to quickly screen the population of the rural communities of LAC through the householders using a three-stage design.

Objective: To evaluate impact of Nursing Methodology formation program. Methods: Intervention study with valuation before later. Information is registered by questionnaires before and later to theoretical sesions, clinical consensus and direct advice. Results: There were formed in 2 years 133 nurses of 11 primary health zones. Profile: woman, 19 years of experience, positive opinion about methodology and nursingdiagnoses, which attributes usefulness and finds difficulties with: Labels and confused definitions, lack of knowledge of languages, electronic health records, high demands and pressure, lack of practice. Motivated, without previous formation and interested for practical and useful pproach.After formation increased satisfaction, knowledge and there were new proposes tofollow-up. They not perceived interferences in daily routine and not difficulties to clarifydoubts. During the direct advices they felt comfort, help, motivation, interest. Conclusions: Effective program to learn nursing standardized languages.ResumenObjetivo principal: Evaluar impacto de formación en Metodología Enfermera. Metodología: Estudio de intervención de campo con valoración antes-después. Se registran datos con los cuestionarios previo y posterior a talleres, sesiones clínicas e interconsultas. Resultados principales: Se formaron en 2 años 133 enfermeras de 11 zonas de salud. Perfil: mujer, 19 años de experiencia, opinión positiva sobre metodología y diagnósticos de enfermería, atribuye utilidad y encuentra dificultades: etiquetas y definiciones confusas, desconocimiento del lenguaje, aplicación informatizada, elevada presión asistencial, falta de práctica. Motivada, sin formación previa e interés por enfoque práctico y útil. Tras la formación se produce aumento de la satisfacción, mejora conocimientos previos y se propone seguimiento. No perciben interferencias en rutina diaria ni dificultades para aclarar dudas. Durante las interconsultas refieren comodidad, ayuda, motivación, interés. Thirty‐eight screened positive were identified at stage I and II and of these, 28 people with epilepsy were identified, giving an overall prevalence of 4.2/1000 (95% CI 2.6–5.7). Prevalence rate steeply increased with age reaching a peak of 7.9/1000 in the population aged 20–29 years without significant differences between women and men. For almost 50% of the screened positive subjects, confirmation of epilepsy by a neurologist at stage III was achieved through simple videoconsultation. After a simultaneous awareness campaign, 22 self‐reported PWE requested a consultation and, among them, 11 had a diagnosis of epilepsy confirmed. Significance: This study shows a prevalence estimate close to those reported for LMIC. Simple videoconsultation and specific apps may be valuable tools in epidemiological research. Awareness campaigns are important allies for a full case identification, particularly in contexts where higher rates of stigma are recorded. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
