The effect of doublet state metalloradical complex in a solar cell inside the common active layer poly(3-hexylthiophene)/[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT/PC60BM) is explored. In this work, it is demonstrated that the role of the bis-[1,3-bis-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-4,5-dichloroimidazol-2-ylidene]palladium(I) hexafluoridophosphate dopant, [Pd(IPrCl)2][PF6], is crucial because the presence of a stable unpaired electron in the molecule significantly improves the optoelectronic performance of the device. We f the optimal concentration of this molecule in the active layer and demonstrate that the presence of this additive in the active layer helps to significantly improve the morphology of the device. The improvements in optoelectronic and morphological parameters are associated with a remarkable increase in photocurrent generation due to more favorable mechanisms of charge separation at the donor/acceptor (D/A) interfaces of the active layer and reduced recombinations. Moreover, the presence of this additive improves the stability of the unencapsulated solar cell against photochemical degradation produced by sunlight.

Background: In locally-advanced breast cancers (LABC), the previous primary goal of neoadjuvant systemic therapy was to improve resectability and achieve better margins. Currently, it can also provide important prognostic information based on actual response to therapy. Achieving pathologic complete response (pCR) after neoadjuvant therapy is targeted because it is associated with favorable disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). The purpose of this study is to report the 5-year disease-free survival rate and overall survival rate among patients with LABC treated with neoadjuvant treatment followed by surgery. Methods: All patients with histologically diagnosed locally advanced breast cancer, who completed neoadjuvant therapy and surgery at St. Luke’s Medical Center from January 2007 to December 2017 where included. Response to neoadjuvant therapy were categorized using post-surgical pathologic reports. Survival curves were generated by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared using the log-rank test. Results: The cohort included 231 women, most were diagnosed with stage III disease (n=151). Pathologic complete response to neoadjuvant treatment had a significantly greater 5-year disease-free survival at 73.17% compared to those with residual disease after neoadjuvant treatment at 51.25% (Log-rank test p=0.0107). The locoregional recurrence-free survival and distant metastasis-free survival were 83.20% and 62.0% at 5 years, respectively. No deaths were recorded at 5 years for patients who achieved pathologic complete response after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Conclusion: Pathologic complete response has better outcomes in terms of disease-free survival compared to those who did not achieve complete pathologic response after neoadjuvant therapy. Disease-free survival among patients who achieved pathologic complete response does not significantly differ among the different molecular phenotypes. The overall survival of the patients in this cohort does not differ in terms of phenotypic subtypes and mortality is seen among patients with disease progression.

Abstract Moving down a hillslope from ridge to valley, soil develops and becomes increasingly weathered. Downslope variation in clay content, organic matter, and porosity should produce concomitant changes in soil strength that influence slope stability and erosion. This has yet to be demonstrated, however, because in situ measurements of soil rheology are challenging and rare. Here we employ a robotic leg as a mechanically sensitive and time‐efficient penetrometer to map soil strength along a canonical temperate hillslope profile. We observe a systematic downslope weakening, and increasing heterogeneity, of soil strength associated with a transition from sand‐rich ridge materials to cohesive valley bottom soil aggregates. Weathering‐induced changes in soil composition lead to physically distinct mechanical behaviors in cohesive soils that depart from the behavior observed for sand. We also demonstrate the promise that legged robots may use their limbs to sense and improve mobility in complex environments, with implications for planetary exploration.

Background There is limited data on antibiotic treatment in hospitalized neonates in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We aimed to describe patterns of antibiotic use, pathogens, and clinical outcomes, and to develop a severity score predicting mortality in neonatal sepsis to inform future clinical trial design. Methods and findings Hospitalized infants Conclusion Antibiotic regimens used in neonatal sepsis commonly diverge from WHO guidelines, and trials of novel empiric regimens are urgently needed in the context of increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The baseline NeoSep Severity Score identifies high mortality risk criteria for trial entry, while the NeoSep Recovery Score can help guide decisions on regimen change. NeoOBS data informed the NeoSep1 antibiotic trial (ISRCTN48721236), which aims to identify novel first- and second-line empiric antibiotic regimens for neonatal sepsis. James Neal Russell and colleagues report a global neonatal sepsis observational cohort study (NeoOBS) exploring patterns of antibiotic use, pathogens and prediction of mortality in hospitalised neonates and young infants with sepsis. Author summary Why was this study done? Increasing trends in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) disproportionately affect neonates and young infants with sepsis in LMIC settings and undermine the effectiveness of WHO-recommended antibiotics. Despite this, longitudinal data on antibiotic management strategies and outcomes of hospitalized neonates and young infants with sepsis in low- and middle-income country (LMIC) settings are extremely limited, impeding the design of robust antibiotic trials. There is limited data to define risk stratification, inclusion, and escalation criteria in trials of sepsis in hospitalized neonates and young infants. What did the researchers do and find? In this large global, prospective, hospital-based observational study across 4 continents, including LMIC settings, there was a high mortality among infants with culture positive sepsis (almost 1 in 5), and a significant burden of antibiotic resistance. This study highlights wide variations in standard of care (SOC) for sepsis in neonates and young infants, with more than 200 different antibiotic combinations, significant divergence from WHO-recommended regimens, and frequent switching of antibiotics. A NeoSep Severity Score that defined patterns of mortality risk at baseline was developed from 4 non-modifiable and 6 modifiable factors that are feasible to measure across a range of LMIC hospital contexts. A NeoSep Recovery Score including the same modifiable factors (with the addition of cyanosis) predicted mortality on the following day during treatment. What do these findings mean? These data demonstrate that patterns of routine antibiotic use are now markedly divergent from global guidance. There is an urgent need for large pragmatic randomized controlled trials to address optimal empiric first- and second-line antibiotic treatment strategies in LMIC hospital settings with a significant AMR burden. The wide range of multiple antibiotic regimens routinely used as SOC suggests the need for novel trial designs. The NeoSep Severity Score and NeoSep Recovery Score informed inclusion and escalation criteria in the NeoSep1 antibiotic trial (ISRCTN48721236) that aims to identify novel first- and second-line empiric antibiotic regimens for neonatal sepsis.

Objectives: The digital transformation of the economy is characterized by the rapid advancement and wide-spread workplace application of digital technologies. Our study aimed to unpack how the digital transformation of the economy contributes to challenges and opportunities for the sustainable employment and health of persons living with disabilities. Methods: One-on-one semi-structured interviews with policy makers, disability employment service providers and future of work specialists were conducted. Interviewees asked about the implications of digital technology advancements for persons with disabilities. Participants were also asked about the strategies that could be used to support inclusive employment within a digitized working world. An iterative and flexible grounded theory methodological approach was taken to analyze the qualitative data and to develop a conceptual understanding of the digital transformation of the economy for persons living with disabilities. Results: Forty participants were interviewed from across Canada. The digital transformation of the economy was seen as disadvantageous to persons living with disabilities and could impact their ability to find and sustain paid work, advance within their career, and remain productive. Labelled as the digital divide, participants frequently referred to sources of inequities faced by persons with disabilities that shaped their ability to fully participate in a digital working world. The digital divide was characterized by three intersecting concepts which included disparities in digital technology access, personal resources, and job skills. Participants highlighted the importance of equity and inclusive design considerations in the development and dissemination of digital technology and more responsive skilling initiatives for a changing work environment. Conclusions: Findings provide an important conceptual foundation for scholarship on work and health inequities that can arise from the digital transformation of the economy and bring greater attention to the design of targeted disability employment support programs and policies that are relevant and inclusive for a digital working world.

Alongside the conventional stories that account for a scientific or simply traveling experience in the Canary Islands, throughout the 19th century a series of heterogeneous publications proliferated, both in their format and periodicity as well as in their content and length, which bring various news reports about the Archipelago within reach of a wide and varied reading public. In order to bring to light some of these texts, we will analyse a representative set of magazines, yearbooks or newsletters that appeared during the second half of this century in France.

Neonatal sepsis is a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in low- and middle-income countries. To deliver high-quality data studies and inform future trials, it is crucial to understand the challenges encountered when managing global multi-centre research studies and to identify solutions that can feasibly be implemented in these settings. This paper provides an overview of the complexities faced by diverse research teams in different countries and regions, together with actions implemented to achieve pragmatic study management of a large multi-centre observational study of neonatal sepsis. We discuss specific considerations for enrolling sites with different approval processes and varied research experience, structures, and training. Implementing a flexible recruitment strategy and providing ongoing training were necessary to overcome these challenges. We emphasize the attention that must be given to designing the database and monitoring plans. Extensive data collection tools, complex databases, tight timelines, and stringent monitoring arrangements can be problematic and might put the study at risk. Finally, we discuss the complexities added when collecting and shipping isolates and the importance of having a robust central management team and interdisciplinary collaborators able to adapt easily and make swift decisions to deliver the study on time and to target. With pragmatic approaches, appropriate training, and good communication, these challenges can be overcome to deliver high-quality data from a complex study in challenging settings through a collaborative research network.

Abstract How do scientists generate and weight candidate queries for hypothesis testing, and how does learning from observations or experimental data impact query selection? Field sciences offer a compelling context to ask these questions because query selection and adaptation involves consideration of the spatiotemporal arrangement of data, and therefore closely parallels classic search and foraging behavior. Here we conduct a novel simulated data foraging study—and a complementary real-world case study—to determine how spatiotemporal data collection decisions are made in field sciences, and how search is adapted in response to in-situ data. Expert geoscientists evaluated a hypothesis by collecting environmental data using a mobile robot. At any point, participants were able to stop the robot and change their search strategy or make a conclusion about the hypothesis. We identified spatiotemporal reasoning heuristics, to which scientists strongly anchored, displaying limited adaptation to new data. We analyzed two key decision factors: variable-space coverage, and fitting error to the hypothesis. We found that, despite varied search strategies, the majority of scientists made a conclusion as the fitting error converged. Scientists who made premature conclusions, due to insufficient variable-space coverage or before the fitting error stabilized, were more prone to incorrect conclusions. We found that novice undergraduates used the same heuristics as expert geoscientists in a simplified version of the scenario. We believe the findings from this study could be used to improve field science training in data foraging, and aid in the development of technologies to support data collection decisions.

Nicotine and cannabis are two of the most commonly consumed licit and illicit drugs during pregnancy, often consumed together via e-cigarettes. Vaping is assumed to be a safer alternative than traditional routes of consumption, yet the potential consequences of prenatal e-cigarette exposure are largely unknown, particularly when these two drugs are co-consumed. In a novel co-exposure model, pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats received nicotine (36 mg/mL), tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) (100 mg/mL), the combination, or the vehicle via e-cigarettes daily from gestational days 5–20, mimicking the first and second human trimesters. Maternal blood samples were collected throughout pregnancy to measure drug and metabolite levels, and core body temperatures before and after exposure were also measured. Pregnant dams exposed to combined nicotine and THC had lower plasma nicotine and cotinine levels than those exposed to nicotine alone; similarly, the combined exposure group also had lower plasma THC and THC metabolite (THC-OH and THC-COOH) levels than those exposed to THC alone. Prenatal nicotine exposure gradually decreased initial core body temperatures each day, with chronic exposure, whereas exposure to THC decreased temperatures during the individual sessions. Despite these physiological effects, no changes were observed in food or water intake, weight gain, or basic litter outcomes. The use of this model can help elucidate the effects of co-exposure to THC and nicotine via e-cigarettes on both users and their offspring. Understanding the effects of co-use during pregnancy is critical for improving education for pregnant mothers about prenatal e-cigarette use and has important implications for public policy.

Phytopathogens are responsible for great losses in agriculture. In particular, Fusarium, Alternaria and Botrytis are fungal diseases that affect crops worldwide. In the search for eco-friendly solutions to pest control, plants and their chemo-biodiversity are promising sources of biopesticides for integrated pest management. The aim of the present study is to report the evaluation of sixteen plant species from the Canary Islands Archipelago against the phytopathogenic fungi Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium oxysporum, and Alternaria alternata. The plants were selected on the basis of their traditional uses in medicine and/or pest control, as well as on scientific studies reporting their uses in crop protection. Their growth inhibition (% I), in an in vitro test-assay on mycelium, was used to identify six ethanolic plant extracts displaying activity (% I > 30% at 1 mg/mL) against at least one of the assayed fungi. The most effective plant extracts were further fractionated by liquid–liquid partition, using solvents of increasing polarity. This procedure led to an improvement of the bioactivity against the phytopathogens, even affecting the hexane fraction from S. canariensis and achieving an 83.93% of growth inhibition at 0.5 mg/mL on B. cinerea. These findings identified five plant-derived extracts as potential candidates for the future development of new biofungicides, which could be applied in integrated pest management.

A great number of intervention strategies that provide opportunities to maintain physical, psychological, and social wellbeing have been carried out in order to promote active aging. Most of these strategies are aimed at people without physicalor cognitive dependence, while institutionalized older people have not been considered as a target group. The main objectiveof this study was to analyze the effect of an active aging program on the psychological well-being and life satisfaction ofinstitutionalized older people. A total of 141 participants with adequate psychomotor skills were selected (Mage = 85.50 years,SD = 8.47), and a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group and an experimental group was used. Thecontrol group participated in the traditional limited active aging program offered in long-term care facilities – cognitivestimulation and physical activity – while the experimental group participated in a comprehensive active aging program. Afterthe intervention, participants from the experimental group showed improvements in the mean values of psychological wellbeing and life satisfaction, while no change was found in the control group. The improvements in psychological well-beingand life satisfaction were maintained 12 months later in the follow-up evaluation. This study suggests that the inclusionof a comprehensive active aging program in nursing homes, that comprises actions aimed at promoting empowerment,participation, and social openness, contributes to the maintenance of perceived well-being.

En el siglo XIX emprender un largo viaje por mar conlleva peligros considerables. Mientras que su inicio es siempre vivido con una mezcla de angustia, miedo y felicidad, el regreso supone haber sobrevivido al hambre, la enfermedad y la muerte. A partir de un conjunto de relatos franceses de viaje del siglo XIX nos proponemos analizar las diferentes maneras de relatar dos momentos clave del viaje: el inicio y el regreso. Podremos constatar que algunos autores optan por aportar detalles de las circunstancias e informaciones personales y otros se limitan a ofrecer unas rápidas referencias poniendo, así, de manifiesto su forma de entender la escritura del viaje.

Las universidades han iniciado un proceso para transformar sus espacios físicos en lugares donde se practique, promueva y construya la innovación. Este estudio presenta un análisis de los datos obtenidos en un laboratorio de innovación de una universidad en el norte de México, donde estudiantes, profesores y colaboradores (actores) participan en proyectos interdisciplinarios para poner en práctica la innovación. Por medio de una metodología cualitativa, con enfoque en teoría fundamentada y con el uso de entrevistas y grupos de enfoque, se establecen categorías sobre las funciones, usos e identidades que brinda este espacio para los usuarios, así como los retos de la innovación en el contexto universitario. Los resultados indican que, en el contexto estudiado, el sentido de pertenencia, el aprendizaje colaborativo y la formación de redes son criterios fundamentales para crear un ecosistema de innovación. Además, se resalta la importancia de contar con espacios de innovación dentro de la universidad para transformar las experiencias de enseñanza y aprendizaje de estudiantes y profesores.

Abstract Inflammatory conditions of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and peripheral tissues affect many people around the world and are commonly treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). However, in order to get desirable results, treatments with NSAIDs may take weeks, causing undesirable side effects and requiring repeated administration. In this sense, this work describes the development of an optimized nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) formulation for intra-articular administration of naproxen (NPX). An experimental design (23) selected the best formulation in terms of its physicochemical and structural properties, elucidated by different methods (DLS, NTA, TEM, DSC, and ATR-FTIR). The chosen formulation (NLC-NPX) was tested on acute inflammatory TMJ nociception, in a rat model. The optimized excipients composition provided higher NPX encapsulation efficiency (99.8%) and the nanoparticles were found stable during 1 year of storage at 25 °C. In vivo results demonstrated that the sustained delivery of NPX directly in the TMJ significantly reduced leukocytes migration and levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and TNF-α), for more than a week. These results point out the NLC-NPX formulation as a promising candidate for the safe treatment of inflammatory pain conditions of TMJ or other joints.

The severity of toxoplasmosis depends on a combination of host and parasite factors. Among them, the Toxoplasma strain causing the infection is an important determinant of the disease outcome. Type 2 strains dominate in Europe, whereas in North America type 2, followed by type 3 and 12 strains are commonly isolated from wildlife and patients. To identify the strain type a person is infected with, serological typing provides a promising alternative to the often risky and not always possible biopsy-based DNA methods of genotyping. However, despite recent advances in serotyping, improvements in the sensitivity and specificity are still needed, and it does not yet discriminate among the major Toxoplasma lineages infecting people. Moreover, since infections caused by non-1/2/3 strains have been associated with more severe disease, the ability to identify these is critical. In the present study we investigated the diagnostic potential of an ELISA-based assay using 28 immunogenic Toxoplasma peptides derived from a recent large-scale peptide array screen. Our results show that a discrete number of peptides, derived from Toxoplasma dense granule proteins (GRA3, GRA5, GRA6, and GRA7) was sufficient to discriminate among archetypal strains that infect mice and humans. The assay specifically relies on ratios that compare individual serum reactivities against GRA-specific polymorphic peptide variants in order to determine a “reactivity fingerprint” for each of the major strains. Importantly, nonarchetypal strains that possess a unique combination of alleles, different from types 1/2/3, showed either a non-reactive, or different combinatorial, mixed serum reactivity signature that was diagnostic in its own right, and that can be used to identify these strains. Of note, we identified a distinct “HG11/12” reactivity pattern using the GRA6 peptides that is able to distinguish HG11/12 from archetypal North American/European strain infections.

The application of non-linear signal analysis techniques to biomedical data is key to improve our knowledge about complex physiological and pathological processes. In particular, the use of non-linear techniques to study electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings can provide an advanced characterization of brain dynamics. In epilepsy these dynamics are altered at different spatial scales of neuronal organization. We therefore apply non-linear signal analysis to EEG recordings from epilepsy patients derived with intracranial hybrid electrodes, which are composed of classical macro contacts and micro wires. Thereby, these electrodes record EEG at two different spatial scales. Our aim is to test the degree to which the analysis of the EEG recorded at these different scales allows us to characterize the neuronal dynamics affected by epilepsy. For this purpose, we retrospectively analyzed long-term recordings performed during five nights in three patients during which no seizures took place. As a benchmark we used the accuracy with which this analysis allows determining the hemisphere that contains the seizure onset zone, which is the brain area where clinical seizures originate. We applied the surrogate-corrected non-linear predictability score (ψ), a non-linear signal analysis technique which was shown previously to be useful for the lateralization of the seizure onset zone from classical intracranial EEG macro contact recordings. Higher values of ψ were found predominantly for signals recorded from the hemisphere containing the seizure onset zone as compared to signals recorded from the opposite hemisphere. These differences were found not only for the EEG signals recorded with macro contacts, but also for those recorded with micro wires. In conclusion, the information obtained from the analysis of classical macro EEG contacts can be complemented by the one of micro wire EEG recordings. This combined approach may therefore help to further improve the degree to which quantitative EEG analysis can contribute to the diagnostics in epilepsy patients.

Las islas Canarias han constituido desde siempre un poderoso reclamo para los navegantes, bien por su ubicación estratégica –que las convierte en escala técnica obligada para las grandes campañas marítimas que surcan el Atlántico–, bien por su interés científico. La afluencia de viajeros franceses al Archipiélago es especialmente relevante en el siglo XIX como lo demuestra el elevado número de relatos de viaje publicados en este periodo, fruto de una estancia más o menos larga en las Islas. Junto a las descripciones de estas tierras y de los diferentes estudios llevados a cabo en ellas los relatos de Webb y Berthelot, Dumont d’Urville o Coquet, entre otros, incluyen en sus páginas dibujos y grabados de indudable valor. Nuestro propósito es analizar la función que cumplen dichas imágenes y su vinculación con el texto. Si unas veces se limitan a ilustrar lo descrito y otras añaden contenido a lo expresado verbalmente, lo cierto es que las ilustraciones proporcionan al lector, además de información, un evidente placer estético.

This article is based on the analysis of the prefaces of a set of nineteenth-century French travel writing. These first pages fulfill a double function: an informative function regarding the text itself, and a persuasive one, designed to convince the reader. In this essay we will study the different stylistic resources used by travelers to achieve this purpose, which will allow us to identify, for example, readers expectations or the evolution of the genre. Cet article est basé sur l’analyse des préfaces d’un ensemble de récits de voyage français du XIXe siècle. Ces premières pages ont une double fonction : une fonction informative à propos du texte et une autre persuasive, destinée à convaincre le lecteur. Dans cet article nous allons aborder les différents procédés stylistiques utilisés par les voyageurs afin d’atteindre cet objectif, ce qui va nous permettre d’identifier, par exemple, les attentes du lecteur ou l’évolution du genre.

Abstract Background Extra-Amazonian malaria mortality is 60 times higher than the Amazon malaria mortality. Imported cases correspond to approximately 90% of extra-Amazonian cases. Imported malaria could be a major problem if it occurs in areas with receptivity, because it can favor the occurrence of outbreaks or reintroductions of malaria in those areas. This study aimed to model territorial receptivity for malaria to serve as an entomological surveillance tool in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Geomorphology, rainfall, temperature, and vegetation layers were used in the AHP process for the receptivity stratification of Rio de Janeiro State territory. Results The model predicted five receptivity classes: very low, low, medium, high and very high. The ‘very high’ class is the most important in the receptivity model, corresponding to areas with optimal environmental and climatological conditions to provide suitable larval habitats for Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) vectors. This receptivity class covered 497.14 km2 or 1.18% of the state’s area. The ‘high’ class covered the largest area, 17,557.98 km2, or 41.62% of the area of Rio de Janeiro State. Conclusions We used freely available databases for modeling the distribution of receptive areas for malaria transmission in the State of Rio de Janeiro. This was a new and low-cost approach to support entomological surveillance efforts. Health workers in ‘very high’ and ‘high’ receptivity areas should be prepared to diagnose all febrile individuals and determine the cause of the fever, including malaria. Each malaria case must be treated and epidemiological studies must be conducted to prevent the reintroduction of the disease.

On 18th of April 2020, a 49-year-old woman developed a fever of 38.40C, with no other symptoms. After taking oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents for 2 days, the temperature returned to normal. On 20th of April 2020, she complained of persistent dry cough, sore throat, ageusia, anosmia and chest distress. The next day, she presented to the Emergency Department of Arges County Hospital, Pitesti, Romania. She divulged that she had been in close contact with a friend, who had been recently confirmed with the diagnosis of COVID-19. A high-resolution computed tomography (CT) of the chest was performed, that revealed multiple images of patchy ground-glass opacities in bilateral lower lobes (Figure 1). Given the close contact history and imaging findings, she was admitted as a suspected case of SARS-CoV-2 infection. On admission, physical examination unveiled normal vital signs, with oxygen saturation of 96% while breathing ambient air, lung auscultation normal. The antigen test for influenza was negative. Arterial blood gas analysis pointed out a pO2 of 103 mmHg, potassium 3.3 mEq/L, calcium 1.09 mmol/L and glucose 113 mg/dL. The blood routine tests revealed: white blood cell count 3.99 10^9/Liter, red blood cell count 6.41 10^12/Liter, hemoglobin 13.4 g/dL, hematocrit 40.1%, neutrophils 1.99 10^9/Liter, lymphocytes 39.9%, D-dimers 0.526 ug/mL, troponin T 7.22 ng/L, ferritin 192 ng/mL, procalcitonin 15 ug/L, creatine kinase-MB 27 U/L, lactic acid dehydrogenase (LDH) 481 U/L, fibrinogen 455 mg/dL, normal liver and renal function, normal prothrombin time. The electrocardiogram was normal. On 22th of April, the lab confirmed that the oropharyngeal swab test of SARS-CoV-2 by qualitative real-time reverse-transcriptase–polymerase-chain-reaction (RT-PCR) assay was positive. After seven days of symptomatic treatment and hydroxychloroquine therapy, the patient’s respiratory symptoms significantly improved. The dynamics of high-resolution CT of the chest revealed systematic absorption of lung lesions (Figure 2). After two consecutive (24 hours apart) oropharyngeal swab tests of SARS-CoV-2 RNA negative, the patient was discharged on 30th of April, with the indication for home quarantine for at least 14 days. SARS-CoV-2 RNA by oropharyngeal swab remained negative in the follow-up visit on 13th of May 2020. Take home messages: The accuracy of chest CT in symptomatic patients with COVID-19 is high, but used as a single diagnostic test, CT can not accurately diagnose or exclude coronavirus infection and should not be relied upon as a screening or diagnostic tool for COVID-19 pneumonia. Chest CT is rather helpful in evaluating the complications of COVID-19 and is indicated in patients with COVID-19 and worsening respiratory symptoms. The most common imaging findings are of an atypical or organising pneumonia, with bilateral involvement, especially of the lower lobes. Point of care lung ultrasound may be useful for the diagnosis and can detect abnormalities even in asymptomatic patients. The definitive diagnostic test for SARS-CoV-2 infection is the RT-PCR test.

Activities engagement is one of the three pillars of successful aging, along with health and high cognitive and physical functioning. The importance of participation lies in its influence on other variables such as wellbeing, physical and mental health. The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of participation on psychological wellbeing, depression and health and to determine if there are differences according to the type of activity performed. A sample of 139 people aged 55 to 94 from Granada (49 men and 90 women) was used. Participants were asked about their participation in a list of 16 activities classified as formative, physical or craft, they were asked to rate their subjective health and they were applied the Psychological Wellbeing Scales and the abbreviated version of the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). The results indicate gender differences in participation but not in the other variables analyzed. The total participation in activities was related and was predictor of psychological wellbeing, subjective health and depression but differences were observed according to the type of activity performed. Formative activities relate to personal growth, manual activities with environmental mastery and health, and physical activities with positive relations with others, health and depression. These results highlight the importance of achieving an integral participation in different activities if we are to promote the successful aging of the elderly.

Health and social participation are two fundamental pillars of active aging thus it is important to understand variables that might affect them. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between extraversion, optimism, health status and social participation. The sample comprised 406 community-dwelling older adults (M=74.88, SD= 6.75) from urban areas of Granada. It was found that extraversion and optimism positively correlated with perceived health status and with social participation and negatively correlated with number of illnesses. The association between personality and social participation was stronger than the one between personality and health. This study highlights the relevance that personality has for older adults’ health and social participation thus it is important to consider personality in active aging models.

Active ageing is being studied from different professional perspectives, strengthening the action for the elderly people in order to promote their autonomy, and improve their quality of life. This focus since a lot of social organizations is forgotten in nursing homes because of absence of innovative projects that introduce the features of the changes that have occurred in the profile of the elderly people. New requirements that are not solved by the stagnation suffered since 2003 in this kind of treatments. The inclusion of Social Education and innovative projects can be the solution to this problem, that will be affect a large percentage of the population in the near future.

Calcium chloride is an inorganic salt used in its solid state or as aqueous solutions in a multitude of research and industrial areas going from chemical industry to food, cosmetics or drugs production. This paper was directed to establish mathematical models relating its density and dynamic viscosity with factors such as temperature and concentration since it is known that these properties present a high influence on appropriate transport pipes dimensions and industrial equipment choosing and / or designing processes. The assessment and selection of the adequate models were realized by testing various software’s and equations. The obtained results revealed that calcium chloride aqueous solutions studied thermodynamic properties can accurately be expressed by quadratic (density) and respectively by linear equations (dynamic viscosity) or by more complex equations. Correlation coefficient, relative error and ANOVA values revealed no significant differences between experimental and calculated data.

Risky decision making can be biased by several types of contextual factors-in particular, framing of outcomes. A popular explanation for outcome framing effects is based on presumed affective reactions that contribute to accepting sure gains and avoiding sure losses. Other theories propose that selective weighting of information about gains and losses contributes to framing bias. Prior research on framing bias has focused on preferences rather than on decisions in which choices can be classified as advantageous (correct) or disadvantageous (incorrect) by a normative criterion. The current study used a novel hypothetical risky decision making task offering choices between a sure option and a gamble option. The gamble was advantageous or disadvantageous on different trials based on the normative criterion of expected value. Results showed risk avoidance with a gain frame and risk seeking with a loss frame, comparable to findings when choices involve preferences. We also examined the impact of working memory loads of either non-affective stimuli, most likely to interfere with acquisition of choice information, or affective stimuli, which might influence affective processes contributing to framing. The results were that non-affective working memory load produced the greatest framing magnitude, while affective load produced changes in framing magnitude across trials that varied by valence. In addition, only the non-affective load decreased advantageous choices and reduced the accuracy of answers to knowledge probe questions about the choices. The findings are consistent with the notion that framing effects may arise from cognitive non-engagement with the task, rather than arising by way of affective processes. Affective loads had a limited influence on framing and no reliable impact on choice accuracy or choice knowledge, suggesting that the affective loads influenced the weighting of choice information.

Positive mood often facilitates cognitive functions. Facilitation is hypothesized to be due to an increase in dopamine occurring in positive mood states. However, facilitation has not been consistently found in studies of cognitive flexibility. This inconsistent relationship may reflect the numerous ways cognitive flexibility is measured. Moreover, there is evidence that the role of dopamine in cognitive flexibility performance depends on the type of measure used. In the current study, we employed a probabilistic two-card reversal learning task (n = 129) and a Stroop-like task switching procedure (n = 188) in a college student population. We used a standardized set of mood videos to induce a positive, negative, or neutral mood state. Negative mood states were included to account for possible effects of arousal on performance, which is seen in both positive and negative mood inductions. Based on current theories of positive mood and cognition, we hypothesized that there would be differences in the effects of a positive mood induction on cognitive flexibility as assessed by task switching and reversal learning tasks. The mood induction successfully induced high levels of amusement and increased valence in the positive mood group and high levels of repulsion and decreased valence in the negative mood group. However, there were no differences in cognitive flexibility across any of the mood groups, as assessed by switch costs in task switching and correct choices after the reversal in reversal learning. Overall, these findings do not support the hypothesis that positive mood improves cognitive flexibility.

Individuals with high trait anxiety tend to be worse at flexibly adapting goal-directed behavior to meet changing demands relative to those with low trait anxiety. Past research on anxiety and cognitive flexibility has used tasks that involve overcoming a recently acquired rule, strategy, or response pattern after an abrupt change in task requirements (e.g., choice X led to positive outcomes but now leads to negative outcomes). An important limitation of this research is that many decision making situations require overcoming a preexisting bias (e.g., deciding whether to withdraw a historically winning investment that has experienced recent losses). In the present study we examined whether anxiety differences in the ability to overcome an acquired response extend to the ability to overcome a preexisting bias, when the bias produces objectively disadvantageous decisions. High anxiety (n = 78) and low anxiety participants (n = 76) completed a commonly used measure of cognitive flexibility, reversal learning, and a novel Framed Gambling Task that assessed the extent to which they could make advantageous decisions when the normatively correct choice was inconsistent with a preexisting framing bias. High anxiety participants showed the expected diminished reversal learning performance and also had poorer ability to make advantageous choices that were inconsistent with the framing bias. Worse performance in the Framed Gambling Task was not driven by poor knowledge of risk contingencies, because high anxiety participants reported the same explicit knowledge as low anxiety participants. Instead, the results suggest high anxiety is associated with general deficits in resolving interference from prepotent responses.

The paucity of data on migratory connections and an incomplete understanding of how mobile organisms use geographically separate areas have been obstacles to understanding coastal dynamics. Research on acoustically tagged striped bass (Morone saxatilis) at the Plum Island Ecosystems (PIE) Long Term Ecological Research site, Massachusetts, documents intriguing patterns of biotic connectivity (i.e., long-distance migration between geographically distinct areas). First, the striped bass tagged at PIE migrated southward along the coast using different routes. Second, these tagged fish exhibited strong fidelity and specificity to PIE. For example, across multiple years, tagged striped bass resided in PIE waters for an average of 1.5–2.5 months per year (means: 51–72 days; range 2–122 days), left this estuary in fall, then returned in subsequent years. Third, this specificity and fidelity connected PIE to other locations. The fish exported nutrients and energy to at least three other coastal locations through biomass added as growth. These results demonstrate that what happens in an individual estuary can affect other estuaries. Striped bass that use tightly connected routes to feed in specific estuaries should have greater across-system impacts than fish that are equally likely to go anywhere. Consequently, variations in when, where, and how fish migrate can alter across-estuary impacts.

El progresivo envejecimiento de la población española conlleva un aumento de la atención sanitaria, por los servicios de urgencias extrahospitalarias (SUE), a este grupo de edad. El objetivo de este trabajo es evidenciar la importancia de realizar una valoración global del anciano en el contexto domiciliario y comunitario, que contemple tanto los aspectos físicos como los psicosociales y ambientales de la persona en situación de urgencia. Para ello, se desarrolla un caso clínico, que se apoya en la evidencia científica, para determinar la actuación más adecuada que mejore las intervenciones de los servicios de urgencias extrahospitalarias. El análisis del caso se estructura en tres apartados: la valoración de enfermería, el registro de los datos y la transmisión de la información a otros equipos de salud. Como conclusión, se identifica la necesidad de valorar y registrar datos sobre el estado físico y fisiológico del anciano al mismo tiempo que se recoge información sobre su contexto familiar, comunitario o ambiental, para proporcionar unos cuidados integrales y de calidad. Asimismo, se recomienda el desarrollo de herramientas de valoración geriátrica específicas para utilizar en situaciones de urgencias extrahospitalarias.The progressive aging of the Spanish population leads to increased health care for Outpatient Emergency Services (EUS), in this age group. The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of an overall assessment of the elderly in the household and community context, which involves both the physical and psychosocial in the emergency environmental. To do this, we develop a clinical case, which is based on scientific evidence, to determine the most appropriate action to improve interventions in emergency services. The case analysis is divided into three sections: nursing assessment, data recording and transmission of information to other health teams. In conclusion, it identifies the need to assess and record data on physical and physiological status of the elderly, at the same time it collects information about family background, community or environmental, to provide a comprehensive and quality care. It also recommends the development of specific geriatric assessment tools for use in emergency situations.

Entende-se por leites fermentados os produtos resultantes da fermentação do leite pasteurizado ou esterilizado, por fermentos lácticos próprios. Neste trabalho foram estudadas três marcas comerciais de leites fermentados, com especificação de "Leite fermentado desnatado adoçado". Objetivou-se avaliar as marcas quanto às propriedades físicas e químicas, comparar com os rótulos, adequação à legislação, além de avaliar os atributos sensoriais mais relevantes na aceitação do produto. Foram realizadas análises de umidade, carboidratos, proteína, cinzas, gordura, cálcio, sódio, L*, b*, acidez e pH das marcas A, B e C, que posteriormente foram correlacionadas com a informação nutricional presente no rótulo e legislação específica. A partir dos resultados foram realizadas análise de variância (ANOVA) e teste de Tukey a 5% de probabilidade. O desempenho sensorial dos leites fermentados foi avaliado através de análise de cluster, realizado com 60 julgadores, não treinados, de idades variadas. As marcas de leite fermentado avaliadas apresentaram conformidade com a legislação em relação ao teor de gordura e acidez, obtendo valores abaixo dos exigidos quanto à proteína somente para a amostra A. A análise de cluster indicou que a maior parcela dos consumidores avaliados preferiram leite fermentado com baixa acidez, sabor mais doce e sugeriu uma baixa influência do atributo cor na escolha de diferentes leites fermentados. Quanto à intenção de compra a marca C obteve maior aceitação, representando 78,3% dos consumidores com escore correspondendo ao termo "provavelmente compraria".

Periostin is an extracellular matrix protein highly expressed in collagen-rich tissues subjected to continuous mechanical stress. Functionally, periostin is involved in tissue remodeling and its altered function is associated to numerous pathological processes. In orthodontics, periostin plays key roles in the maintenance of dental tissues and it is mainly expressed in those areas where tension or pressing forces are taking place. In this regard, high expression of periostin is essential to promote migration and proliferation of periodontal ligament fibroblasts. However little is known about the participation of periostin in migration and adhesion processes of bone remodeling cells. In this work we employ the mouse pre-osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 and the macrophage-like RAW 264.7 cell lines to overexpress periostin and perform different cell-based assays to study changes in cell behavior. Our data indicate that periostin overexpression not only increases adhesion capacity of MC3T3-E1 cells to different matrix proteins but also hampers their migratory capacity. Changes on RNA expression profile of MC3T3-E1 cells upon periostin overexpression have been also analyzed, highlighting the alteration of genes implicated in processes such as cell migration, adhesion or bone metabolism but not in bone differentiation. Overall, our work provides new evidence on the impact of periostin in osteoblasts physiology.

OBJETIVO: A morbidade associada à asma é elevada, principalmente nos países em desenvolvimento, e as falhas na adesão ao uso de corticóide inalatório contribuem para esta elevação. Este estudo objetiva comparar as taxas de adesão ao uso de beclometasona relatadas pelos responsáveis e as mensuradas pelos registros de dispensação farmacêutica do medicamento. MÉTODOS: Foi realizado um estudo de coorte concorrente com duração de 12 meses, do qual participaram 106 crianças e adolescentes asmáticos, selecionados aleatoriamente. Através da regressão linear, as taxas de adesão relatadas pelos responsáveis e pelos registros de dispensação da farmácia do serviço foram correlacionadas, quadrimestralmente, a partir da admissão no estudo. RESULTADOS: As taxas de adesão relatadas pelos pais e/ou responsáveis foram sempre superiores (p < 0,001) e apresentaram fraca correlação com aquelas mensuradas pelos registros de farmácia nos períodos estudados, quarto (r = 0,37) e 12º (r = 0,31) mês do seguimento.CONCLUSÃO: As taxas de adesão relatadas pelos pais foram superestimadas em todos os períodos do estudo. Crianças com asma deveriam ter suas taxas de adesão também monitoradas por outros métodos e, neste caso, os registros de farmácia foram efetivos em revelar as falhas na adesão. Dado ao seu baixo custo, esse método está indicado para a verificação dessas taxas.OBJECTIVE: There is elevated morbidity associated with asthma, particularly in developing countries, and failure to comply with inhaled corticosteroid treatment contributes to this morbidity. The objective of this study is to compare rates of compliance with beclomethasone treatment reported by parents or guardians with those measured by pharmacy dispensing records. METHODS: A concurrent cohort study of 12 months' duration was carried out, enrolling 106 asthmatic children and adolescents, selected at random. Linear regression was used to compare rates of compliance reported by parents or guardians with the pharmacy dispensing records at the service, every 4 months after enrollment on the study. RESULTS: Compliance rates reported by parents and/or guardians were always higher (p < 0.001) and exhibited a weak correlation with pharmacy records during the period studied; fourth (r = 0.37) and twelfth (r = 0.31) months of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: The rates of compliance reported by parents were overestimated during all study periods. The compliance rates of children with asthma should also be monitored by other methods and, in this case, pharmacy records effectively revealed compliance failures. Given its low cost, this method is indicated for verification of these compliance rates.

O trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a tensão superficial estática de soluções aquosas com formulações de óleos minerais e vegetais emulsionáveis utilizados como adjuvantes na agricultura. Os óleos minerais e vegetais, quando adicionados aos produtos fitossanitários, podem imprimir características desejáveis à calda de pulverização, como reduzir a tensão superficial em soluções aquosas, possibilitar maior contato da calda com a superfície vegetal ou reduzir o potencial de deriva durante as pulverizações. Foram testados os seguintes produtos comerciais: óleos minerais (Assist, Attach, Dytrol, Iharol, Mineral Oil, Spinner, Sunspray-E e Triona) e óleos vegetais (Agrex'oil Vegetal, Crop Oil, Natur'l Óleo, Óleo Vegetal Nortox e Veget Oil), todos com registro de uso na agricultura. A tensão superficial das soluções aquosas foi avaliada em 11 concentrações para cada produto (0,025; 0,05; 0,1; 0,25; 0,5; 0,75; 1,0; 1,5; 2,0; 2,5 e 3,0% v/v). Essa propriedade dos óleos minerais e dos óleos vegetais foi estimada medindo-se a massa das gotas formadas na extremidade de uma bureta. Ao conjunto de dados obtidos para cada produto, na avaliação da tensão superficial, foram determinadas as análises de variância e de regressão, ajustando-se os dados ao Modelo de Mitscherlich. Entre os óleos minerais, destacaram-se os produtos: Assist, Dytrol, Iharol e Mineral Oil por apresentarem as menores tensões superficiais mínimas estimadas pelo Modelo, respectivamente, 29,255; 28,442; 26,097 e 28,584 mN m-1. Os óleos vegetais que apresentaram os menores valores de tensão superficial mínima estimados pelo Modelo, foram: Agrex' oil Vegetal (27,716 mN m-1), Natur'l óleo (28,216 mN m-1), Veget Oil (27,308 mN m-1) e Crop Oil (29,964 mN m-1).The aim of this work was to evaluate the surface tension of water emulsion with mineral oils and vegetable oils used as adjuvant. The mineral and vegetable oils when added to the agrochemicals can improve any characteristics of the spray solution. The surface tension was evaluated in emulsion contend: mineral oils (Assist, Attach, Dytrol, Iharol, Mineral Oil, Spinner, Sunspray-E e Triona) and vegetable oils (Agrex'oil Vegetal, Crop Oil, Natur'l Óleo, Óleo Vegetal Nortox e Veget Oil). For each product were evaluated eleven concentrations. This property of the mineral oils and vegetable oils were evaluated with the weight of drops formed in the extremity of a burette. The data were adjusted to the Mitscherlich's Model. The mineral oils Assist, Dytrol, Iharol and Mineral Oil presented the smallest minimum surface tension, respectively, 29.255; 28.442; 26.097 and 28.584 mN m-1. The vegetal oils that presented the smallest values of minimum superficial tension were: Agrex' oil Vegetal (27.716 mN m-1), Natur'l Óleo (28.216 mN m-1), Veget Oil (27.308 mN m-1) and Crop Oil (29.964 mN m-1).

Pleurotus pulmonarius (Fr) Quélet, produced laccase as the main ligninolytic enzyme when cultivated on solid-state cultures using corn cob as substrate. The addition of copper greatly increased the production of enzyme. The addition of 25.0 mM CuSO4 increased the level of laccase from 270 to 1,420 U.L-1 and the fungus showed high resistance to copper under the conditions used in this work.Pleurotus pulmonarius (Fr) Quélet, um basidiomiceto causador da podridão branca da madeira produz lacase como principal enzima ligninolítica quando cultivado em meio em estado sólido utilizando sabugo de milho como substrato. O íon cobre tem grande efeito na produção da enzima. Os melhores resultados foram obtidos pela adição de 25.0 mM de CuSO4 que causou uma elevação dos níveis enzimáticos de 270 U.L-1 para 1.420 U.L-1 O fungo mostrou uma alta resistência ao íon cobre nas condições de cultivo utilizadas neste trabalho.

Descreve-se um surto natural de Ehrlichiose mono-cítica eqüina (EME) ocorrido nos meses de novembro/2001 a fevereiro/2002, em uma propriedade no município de Arroio Grande, localizado à margem oeste da Lagoa Mirim, Rio Grande do Sul. De um total de 50 eqüinos, 13 foram afetados pela enfermidade e seis morreram. A morbidade foi de 26% e a letalidade 46,1%. Os animais acometidos tinham idades entre um e cinco anos e o quadro clínico mais evidente foi o desenvolvimento de diarréia aguda aquosa e profusa. Um dos animais que morreram foi necropsiado e as lesões observadas localizavam-se principalmente no trato intestinal, caracterizando-se por intestino grosso com conteúdo líquido e áreas hemorrágicas difusas na mucosa. Em todo o segmento de intestino delgado observaram-se áreas com mucosa congesta e hemorrágica alternadas com áreas de mucosa normal. Na mucosa de jejuno e íleo observou-se a presença de nódulos contendo secreção purulenta. Os achados histológicos em todo trato intestinal caracterizaram-se pela presença de discreto infiltrado mononuclear restrito a mucosa do órgão, caracterizando uma enterite linfo-histiocitária com predominância de macrófagos. No jejuno e íleo também havia regiões com lesões granulomatosas na lâmina própria, relacionadas a invaginações das criptas das vilosidades intestinais. Para o diagnóstico da infecção por Neorickettsia (Ehrlichia) risticii amostras de sangue de sete eqüinos doentes foram testados pela reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR), resultando em três amostras positivas (42,8%) com a formação de uma banda de 529pb, típica para N. risticii.A spontaneous outbreak of equine monocytic Ehrlichiosis (EME) is described. The disease occurred from November 2001 to February 2002 on a farm in the municipality of Arroio Grande, located at the western edge of the Mirim Lake, state of Rio Grande do Sul. Out of 50 horses 13 were affected and 6 died. The morbidity was 26% and the mortality 46.1%. The affected horses were 1-5 years old. The most important clinical sign was a profuse acute diarrhea. At necropsy of a horse that died with clinical signs of the disease, the main alterations were characterized by hemorrhagic areas of the mucosa of the large intestine with liquid contents, and congested and hemorrhagic areas alternating with normal areas as well as nodules with purulent secretion in the mucosa of the small intestine. The histological changes were characterized by moderate mononuclear infiltration of the mucosa, characterizing a lympho-histiocytic enteritis with predominance of macrophages. In the jejunum and ileum, related to the invagination of crypts and villi, a granulomatous enteritis was observed. To confirm the diagnosis of infection by Neorickettsia (Ehrlichia) risticii, blood samples of seven affected horses were taken and a polimerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed. Three tested blood samples were positive (42.8%) with observation of a band of 529pb characteristic of N. risticii.

Poly(epsilon-caprolactone)/corn starch blends containing 25, 50 and 75 wt.% starch were prepared by mechanical processing and characterized by the melt flow index (MFI), tensile test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). For comparison, starch was used in gelatinized and nongelatinized forms and was also characterized by viscography. The addition of starch to poly(epsilon-caprolactone) reduced the MFI values, the tensile strength and the elongation at break, whereas the modulus increased. The reductions in the MFI and tensile properties were most evident when gelatinized starch was used. Viscography and SEM showed that starch was well gelatinized by the gelatinization process. Blends containing nongelatinized starch showed a good dispersion of starch but poor interfacial interactions.

Linoleic acid (LA, 18:2n-6) is an essential nutrient for optimal infant growth and brain development. The effects of LA in the brain are thought to be mediated by oxygenated metabolites of LA known as oxidized LA metabolites (OXLAMs), but evidence is lacking to directly support this hypothesis. This study investigated whether OXLAMs modulate key neurodevelopmental processes including axon outgrowth, dendritic arborization, cell viability and synaptic connectivity. Primary cortical neuron-glia co-cultures from postnatal day 0-1 male and female rats were exposed for 48h to the following OXLAMs: 1) 13-hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid (13-HODE); 2) 9-hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid (9-HODE); 3) 9,10-dihydroxyoctadecenoic acid (9,10-DiHOME); 4) 12(13)-epoxyoctadecenoic acid (12(13)-EpOME); 5) 9,10,13-trihydroxyoctadecenoic acid (9,10,13-TriHOME); 6) 9-oxo-octadecadienoic acid (9-OxoODE); and 7) 12,13-dihydroxyoctadecenoic acid (12,13-DiHOME). Axonal outgrowth, evaluated by Tau-1 immunostaining, was increased by 9-HODE, but decreased by 12,13-DiHOME in male but not female neurons. Dendrite arborization, evaluated by MAP2B-eGFP expression, was affected by 9-HODE, 9-OxoODE, and 12(13)-EpOME in male neurons and, by 12(13)-EpOME in female neurons. Neither cell viability nor synaptic connectivity were significantly altered by OXLAMs. Overall, this study shows select OXLAMs modulate neuron morphology in a sex-dependent manner, with male neurons being more susceptible.

A busca pela qualidade oriunda do processo de globalização emergente tem despertado o interesse de indústrias em solucionar os problemas ambientais. Neste trabalho, é apresentado o processo de reciclagem mecânica de resíduos industriais de poliuretano, incorporado em diferentes proporções em resinas poliuretanas. O processo de reciclagem foi desenvolvido levando-se em consideração o efeito da temperatura durante o processamento e as diferentes proporções (massa de resina nova: massa de resíduo -> 1:4, 1:8, 1:12,5, 1:20) dos resíduos incorporados na mistura. Os produtos obtidos em diferentes proporções foram caracterizados por meio das propriedades mecânicas de resistência à tração, resistência à abrasão, determinação da dureza e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), com o objetivo de avaliar a viabilidade de possíveis aplicações dos produtos desenvolvidos. Os resultados mostraram que foi possível reciclar proporções de até 1:20 com propriedades de resistência à tração, resistência à perda por abrasão e dureza adequadas para aplicação em pisos de academia de ginástica e pistas de atletismo.
