Abstract

The care of people living with HIV/AIDS in the home and community can be complex and challenging, requiring high levels of knowledge, skill, preparedness and, importantly, the ability to engage with people belonging to marginalised groups. In 2003, the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) HIV/AIDS Team in Victoria, Australia, developed the new role of HIV Resource Nurse at two RDNS centres in Melbourne serving high numbers of people living with HIV/AIDS. Drawing from turn case studies and interviews with two HIV Resource Nurses from one of the centres, this paper describes this practice innovation. Benefits (including a positive impact on client engagement with services, client care, relationships with other health care workers and job satisfaction) are outlined, along with challenges in the implementation and evolution of the role. Abstract

The theme of World AIDS Day 2017 is 'let's end it'. Ater almost 40 years since the first occurrences of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), it is possible to envision an end to the HIV epidemic, one of the most serious health and development challenges humanity has faced. This article provides an overview of the current approaches to the treatment, care and support of people living with HIV and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). It also discusses the challenges associated with HIV and AIDS that remain, HIV prevention strategies, and the nurse's role in caring for people living with HIV. 22. 'I have good life here': a Vietnamese man's journey to access services.

Abstract

The article recounts the story of an HIV-positive Vietnamese refugee man who is able to find support despite multiple disadvantages in Australia. The man's history of risky and illegal behaviour, post-traumatic stress and depression, and cultural and linguistic background, as well as, community stigma of blood borne viruses posed multiple challenges in getting access to services. However, with commitment to equity in health care, justice and teamwork can help overcome the barriers.
