Hispanic-serving institution (HSI) is a federal designation for institutions of higher education that meet a threshold of enrolling 25 percent or more of Hispanic/Latinx undergraduate students as well as thresholds for Pell-eligible students and per capita expenditures. Using a conceptual "servingness" framework (Garcia et al., 2019, p. 771), the research group mapped out new metrics to assess the extent to which HSIs change educational and administrative practices, processes, and policies in the interest of serving. The research group focused on five areas for change: institutional success, faculty success, student success, community engagement, and research.

Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) populations have been in apparent decline across their native range in North America for decades. Several hypotheses exist for the causes of these declines, including loss of wetlands. We used time‐to‐detection data from 925 surveys from 276 sites across Rhode Island, USA, between 2021–2023 to fit an occupancy model that related the probability of muskrat occupancy at a site to land cover classification. We found that muskrat occupancy was higher in areas with more open water, urban land cover, or a second‐order or larger stream, and lower in areas with salt water. We estimated changes in wetland area throughout Rhode Island using the National Land Cover Database classifications from 2001 and 2019 and found a net loss in wetland cover of 219 ha. We calculated the distance between wetland patches in each of these periods and found that patches were closer together than the dispersal distance of muskrats, suggesting isolation is unlikely to be driving muskrat declines. Additionally, when we used our model to predict changes in muskrat occupancy between 2001 and 2019, both mean and median predicted occupancy changed by <0.005. These results indicate that muskrat declines are not driven by habitat loss, and suggest future research is needed that focuses on other hypothesized mechanisms of muskrat declines such as disease, declining habitat quality, predation, and competition. Between 1999 and 2005, drought in the western United States led to a >44 m fall in the level of Lake Powell (Arizona-Utah), the nation's second-largest reservoir. River discharges to the reservoir were halved, yet the rivers still incised the tops of deltas left exposed along the rim of the reservoir by the lake-level fall. Erosion of the deltas enriched the rivers in sediment such that upon entering the reservoir they discharged plunging subaqueous gravity flows, one of which was imaged acoustically. Repeat bathymetric surveys of the reservoir show that the gravity flows overtopped rockfalls and formed small subaqueous fans, locally raising sediment accumulation rates 10-100-fold. The timing of deep-basin deposition differed regionally across the reservoir with respect to lake-level change. Total mass of sediment transferred from the lake perimeter to its bottom equates to ~22 yr of river input.

Carbon dots/Prussian blue nanoparticles (CDs/PBNPs) with fluorescence (FL) performance and peroxidase-like activity are synthesized by a simple two-step method. The FL of CDs/PBNPs can be effectively quenched by Fe3+. Fe3+ can accelerate the peroxidase-like activity of CDs/PBNPs. More excitingly, the peroxidase-like activity of CDs/PBNPs could be further enhanced due to the influence of the photothermal effect. Based on the FL property and enhanced peroxidase-like activity, a cascade strategy is proposed for detection of Fe3+ and free cholesterol. CD/PBNPs act as FL probe for detection of Fe3+. The enhanced peroxidase-like activity of CDs/PBNPs can also be used as colorimetric probe for the detection of free cholesterol. The detection ranges of Fe3+ and free cholesterol are 4–128 μM and 2–39 μM, and the corresponding limit of detections are 2.0 μM and 1.63 μM, respectively. The proposed strategy has been verified by the feasibility determination of Fe3+ and free cholesterol, suggesting its potential in the prediction of disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
