During early childhood, reading books with one's caregiver (shared book reading) is a valuable means of supporting learning. Yet, there are gaps in our understanding of the influence of shared book reading on young children's science learning. The current research bridges this gap by examining the pedagogical quality of science books in preschool-aged children's environments and investigating how such books influence children's learning and caregivers' extratextual talk during shared book reading. In Study 1, we coded 60 science books that were readily available in young children's environments within the United States. The books were designed for English speakers and recommended for preschool-aged children. We coded the books for the extent to which they were Coherent (elaborated on facts presented by providing details, examples, comparisons, etc.) and included Embedded Questions. However, many books were low in Cohesion and Embedded Questions and were of low pedagogical quality. In Study 2, we tested thirty-eight 4- to 5-year-old children (55% female, 76% White) and their caregivers in the Southeastern United States. We assessed the influence of books' levels of Cohesion and Embedded Questions and of caregivers' Elaborative extratextual talk during shared book reading on children's science learning. Children learned more from books high in Cohesion, irrespective of levels of Embedded Questions and caregivers' Elaborative Talk. Additionally, children learned more from books high in Embedded Questions when caregivers used more Elaborative Talk. This research highlights the importance that books' textual features and social interactions during shared book reading have in promoting early science learning.

Educational opportunities occur through naturalistic everyday life experiences (e.g., reading a newspaper, listening to a podcast, or visiting a museum). Research primarily examines learning under controlled conditions, such as in a classroom or laboratory. There is relatively little known about the extent to which adults extract semantic content, beyond factual recall, from naturalistic educational experiences. In the present work, we focused on virtual museum exhibits. The materials were sourced directly from an art history museum. The naturalistic nature of this work stems from the type of content used though an important component of naturalistic learning--motivational processes--was not measured. In each of three experiments, we assessed adult learners' performance on tests of factual recall, inferential reasoning, and self-derivation through memory integration from naturalistic virtual museum exhibits. In anticipation of the potential challenge associated with learning outcomes under naturalistic conditions, we administered a yoked protocol under which participants had opportunities to engage in retrieval practice (Experiment 2a) or restudy (Experiment 2b) as explicit mechanisms of support for the three tests of learning. In all experiments, participants performed successfully on all three tests of learning; factual recall was the most accessible of the three learning outcomes. There was no difference in performance at the group level across experiments, but there was at the individual level, such that idea units generated during retrieval practice predicted learning outcomes, whereas restudy of those exact idea units did not. The current work provides novel insight into mechanisms underlying adult learning from naturalistic educational opportunities.

Learning occurs across distributed multimodal experiences. To accumulate knowledge one must integrate related infor-mation across different representational formats i.e. across text and photographs. We extended an established memoryintegration paradigm to test acquisition and integration of knowledge across different representational formats based onart history museum exhibits. Participants received integrable passage pairs in either text-text or text-text+photographformats. Even though the processing demands were higher with photographs, preliminary results indicate no significantdifferences between conditions. Future work will examine potential differences in integration across both context (class-room to museum) and representational formats (text and museum artifacts). We hypothesize that integration across contextand representational format will create higher cognitive demand than integration across representational formats; will thisbe offset by the higher information-value of museum exhibits? This research will provide key insights into multimodallearning and inform best practices for maximizing comprehension in informal learning settings such as museums.

Abstract Understanding and attributing changes to water quality is essential to the study and management of coastal ecosystems and the ecological functions they sustain (e.g., primary productivity, predation, and submerged aquatic vegetation growth). However, describing patterns of water clarity—a key aspect of water quality—over meaningful scales in space and time is challenged by high spatial and temporal variability due to natural and anthropogenic processes. Regionally tuned satellite algorithms can provide a more complete understanding of coastal water clarity changes and drivers. In this study, we used open‐access satellite data and low‐cost in situ methods to improve estimates of water clarity in an optically complex coastal water body. Specifically, we created a remote sensing water clarity product by compiling Landsat‐8 and Sentinel‐2 reflectance data with long‐term Secchi depth measurements at 12 sites over 8 years in a shallow turbid coastal lagoon system in Virginia, USA. Our satellite‐based model explained ∼33% of the variation in in situ water clarity. Our approach increases the spatiotemporal coverage of in situ water clarity data and improves estimates from bio‐optical algorithms that overpredicted water clarity. This could lead to a better understanding of water clarity changes and drivers to better predict how water quality will change in the future.

The study of individuals with autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease affords one of the best opportunities to characterize the biological and cognitive changes of Alzheimer's disease that occur over the course of the preclinical and symptomatic stages. Unifying the knowledge gained from the past three decades of research in the world's largest single-mutation autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease kindred - a family in Antioquia, Colombia with the E280A mutation in the Presenilin1 gene - will provide new directions for Alzheimer's research and a framework for generalizing the findings from this cohort to the more common sporadic form of Alzheimer's disease. As this specific mutation is virtually 100% penetrant for the development of the disease by midlife, we use a previously defined median age of onset for mild cognitive impairment for this cohort to examine the trajectory of the biological and cognitive markers of the disease as a function of the carriers' estimated years to clinical onset. Studies from this cohort suggest that structural and functional brain abnormalities - such as cortical thinning and hyperactivation in memory networks - as well as differences in biofluid and in vivo measurements of Alzheimer's-related pathological proteins distinguish Presenilin1 E280A mutation carriers from non-carriers as early as childhood, or approximately three decades before the median age of onset of clinical symptoms. We conclude our review with discussion on future directions for Alzheimer's disease research, with specific emphasis on ways to design studies that compare the generalizability of research in autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease to the larger sporadic Alzheimer's disease population.

Promoting STEM knowledge early in development helps prepare children for school success. Exposing children to STEMbooks may be a simple and effective means for promoting early STEM knowledge. However, whether preschool-agedchildrens STEM books are optimally designed is unknown. Children and adults learn new information more effectivelywhen there is support for encoding and demand for active processing. We have conducted a textual analysis of 50 STEMbooks designed for preschool-aged children. The books are coded for (a) support for encoding (narratively cohesive andtopic maintaining), and (b) demand of active processing (posing questions and including interactive prompts). Preliminarydata shows that on average the books include limited support for encoding and demand for active processing. This suggeststhat these books are not fulling their potential of promoting early STEM knowledge. Next steps in this research involveidentifying means for enhancing STEM childrens books efficacy.

Background: Patient‐centered care for persons with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) is associated with positive outcomes, but is lacking in current healthcare systems. Objective: In this qualitative study, we solicited advice from PwPD to medical professionals, family members/friends, and newly‐diagnosed PwPD. Methods: Through an online survey, 275 PwPD answered open‐ended questions asking for their advice. Responses were analyzed using content analysis. Interrater reliability was 94.5%. Results: Three qualitative themes were identified. First, participants advised enhancing care and communication, with healthcare professionals balancing clinical constraints with compassion, and family/friends balancing support with appreciating autonomy of PwPD. The second theme was empowering PwPD through increasing their knowledge of the disease and care options. The third reflected the importance of focusing on well‐being and connection. Conclusion: The results highlight several gaps in meeting the needs of PwPD in healthcare settings and personal relationships, underscoring the importance of integrating their perspectives in shaping approaches to care. The fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) through tidal marsh‐influenced estuaries remain poorly quantified and have been identified as a missing component in carbon‐cycle models. The extreme variability inherent to these ecosystems of the land‐ocean interface challenge our ability to capture DOC‐concentration dynamics and to calculate accurate DOC fluxes. In situ discrete and continuous measurements provide high‐quality estimates of DOC concentration, but these strategies are constrained spatially and temporally and can be costly to operate. Here, field measurements and high‐spatial‐resolution remote sensing were used to train and validate a predictive model of DOC‐concentration distributions in the Plum Island Estuary (PIE), a mesotidal saltmarsh‐influenced estuary in Massachusetts. A large set of field measurements collected between 2017 and 2023 was used to develop and validate an empirical algorithm to retrieve DOC concentration with a ±15% uncertainty from Sentinel‐2 imagery. Implementation on 141 useable images produced a 6‐year time series (2017–2023) of DOC distributions along the thalweg. Analysis of the time series helped identify river discharge, tidal water level (WL), and a marsh enhanced vegetation index 2 as predictors of DOC distribution in the estuary, and facilitated the training and validation of a simple model estimating the distribution. This simple model was able to predict DOC along the PIE thalweg within ±16% of the in situ measurements. Implementation for three years (2020–2022) illustrated how this type of remote‐sensing‐informed models can be coupled with the outputs hydrodynamic models to calculate DOC fluxes in tidal marsh‐influenced estuaries and estimate DOC export to the coastal ocean. Plain Language Summary: The lateral transfer of DOC from tidal saltmarsh estuaries to the coastal ocean is not well represented in carbon‐cycle models. These estuaries are influenced by terrestrial processes, riverine and marsh inputs, and tidal fluctuations that combine to create complex dynamics of DOC concentration and complicate the quantification of DOC fluxes used to compute carbon budgets. Here, we used a combination of field measurements and high‐spatial‐resolution satellite imagery to develop and test a model predicting DOC concentrations along a tidal saltmarsh estuary in Massachusetts from three environmental variables (i.e., tidal WL, river discharge, and a satellite‐derived index of saltmarsh‐biomass). A test using an independent data set revealed this simple model can estimate DOC concentrations within ±16% of the values measured in the laboratory. A simulation conducted for a continuous period of 3 years (15‐min time step) showed that the model produced realistic DOC distributions and captured DOC dynamics adequately in the estuary. The model outputs can easily be coupled with hydrodynamic models to quantify the lateral transfer of DOC from tidal saltmarsh estuaries to the coastal ocean and inform carbon‐cycle models. Self-motivated and directed learning is integral to knowledge base expansion for learners of all ages. Both motivational and cognitive processes drive self-motivated and directed lifelong learning, yet how these different processes operate together from childhood through adulthood is largely unknown. In this review, we discuss the role of personal motivators, such as beliefs in self-efficacy and personality traits in self-motivated and directed learning across the lifespan. We then consider the role of cognitive processes that contribute to knowledge base expansion in learners of all ages, specifically executive functions. We focus on working memory, inhibitory control, and task switching as potential determinants of lifelong learning. Finally, we integrate the two literatures, to discuss ways in which personal motivators may influence deployment of executive functions under self-motivated and directed conditions as a learner advances along a developmental trajectory. We also suggest ways to move the study of self-motivated and directed learning beyond observation and self-report measures thus affording experimental control. We aim to provide a more comprehensive understanding and novel insight to the mechanisms and processes of self-motivated and directed learning across the lifespan.

This article summarizes the presentations and recommendations of the tenth annual American Geriatrics Society and National Institute on Aging Bench-to-Bedside research conference, "Sensory Impairment and Cognitive Decline," on October 2-3, 2017, in Bethesda, Maryland. The risk of impairment in hearing, vision, and other senses increases with age, and almost 15% of individuals aged 70 and older have dementia. As the number of older adults increases, sensory and cognitive impairments will affect a growing proportion of the population. To limit its scope, this conference focused on sensory impairments affecting vision and hearing. Comorbid vision, hearing, and cognitive impairments in older adults are more common than would be expected by chance alone, suggesting that some common mechanisms might affect these neurological systems. This workshop explored the mechanisms and consequences of comorbid vision, hearing, and cognitive impairment in older adults; effects of sensory loss on the aging brain; and bench-to-bedside innovations and research opportunities. Presenters and participants identified many research gaps and questions; the top priorities fell into 3 themes: mechanisms, measurement, and interventions. Background: The largest identified kindred worldwide with a single mutation causing autosomal-dominant Alzheimer's disease (ADAD) is a family from Antioquia, Colombia, carrying the Presenilin-1 (PSEN1) E280A (Paisa) mutation. The majority of mutation carriers develop dementia, typically commencing in their late 30 s, with a median onset age of 49 years. Cognitive decline is a hallmark feature. Objective: This review synthesizes the existing literature on neuropsychological assessments in PSEN1 E280A mutation carriers throughout their lifespan. We provide a comprehensive overview of cognitive outcomes in this unique population. Methods: We reviewed and integrated the published research, analyzing studies on neuropsychological assessments in PSEN1 E280A carriers. Our focus was on measures of verbal, semantic, episodic, and spatial memory, and encompassed other cognitive domains such as language, attention, visuospatial memory, and executive functioning. Results: Verbal, semantic, episodic, and spatial memory emerged as the most sensitive indicators of preclinical changes in PSEN1 E280A carriers. Inconsistencies were noted in findings from tests assessing language, attention, visuospatial memory, and executive functioning, suggesting potential limitations in detecting early cognitive changes in PSEN1 mutation carriers. Specific cognitive tasks developed for this population proved effective but underutilized. Conclusions: The review underscores the importance of continued test development tailored to detect early cognitive changes in PSEN1 E280A carriers, potentially enhancing ADAD screening. Furthermore, investigating ADAD mutations in children may identify early changes in AD and enhance our understanding of neuropsychological functioning across the lifespan. Accumulating world knowledge is a major task of development and education. The productive process of self-derivation through memory integration seemingly is a valid model of the process. To test the model, we examined relations between generation and retention of new factual knowledge via self-derivation through integration and world knowledge as measured by standardised assessments. We also tested whether the productive process of self-derivation predicted world knowledge even when a measure of learning through direct instruction also was considered. Participants were 162 children ages 8–12 years (53% female; 15% Black, 6% Asian, 1% Arab, 66% White, 5% mixed race, 7% unreported; 1% Latinx). Age accounted for a maximum of 4% of variance in self-derivation and retention. In contrast, substantial individual variability related to general knowledge and content knowledge in several domains, explaining 20–40% variance. In each domain for which self-derivation performance was a unique predictor, it explained a nominally greater share of the variance than the measure of learning through direct instruction. The findings imply that individual variability in self-derivation has functional consequences for accumulation of semantic knowledge across the elementary-school years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Parkinson’s disease (PD) is associated with perceived stigma and affects quality of life (QoL). Additional health conditions may influence these consequences of PD.Aims This study assessed the impact of health conditions on perceived stigma and QoL in persons with PD. We hypothesised that individuals with more health conditions would report more stigma and poorer QoL. We also examined the contributions of demographic and clinical characteristics to the correlations between health conditions and perceived stigma/QoL.Methods We identified 196 eligible participants from the Boston University Online Survey Study of Parkinson’s Disease and examined their health history, performance on multiple stigma measures, and scores on the 39-item Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire assessing QoL.Results At least one health condition was reported by 79% of the sample, with a median of 2 and a range of 0–7 health conditions. More perceived stigma and poorer QoL were associated with thyroid disease, depression, anxiety, and the total number of health conditions. These correlations were related to younger age, less education, and earlier disease onset. Other health conditions (high blood pressure, back/leg surgery, headache, cancer/tumours, and heart disease) were not significantly correlated with stigma or QoL.Conclusions Having more health conditions, or thyroid disease, depression, or anxiety, was associated with more perceived stigma and poorer QoL, with younger age, less education, and earlier disease onset affecting the associations. It is important to consider the burden of health conditions and how they affect persons with PD with specific clinical characteristics.

Apathy, depression, and anxiety are common non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Tracking the changes in such symptoms over time would be valuable not only to determine their natural course during the disease, but also to establish the effects of unusual historical events interacting with the natural course. Having collected data on apathy (Apathy Scale), depression (Beck Depression Inventory-II), and anxiety (Parkinson’s Anxiety Scale) in a large sample of persons with PD (PwPD) before the beginning of the COVID-19 era, we followed up with these individuals to investigate the changes in their prevalence of apathy, depression, and anxiety across two timepoints (T1 and T2). Of the original 347 participants, 111 responded and provided complete data at T2. The data collection at T1, before COVID-19, occurred between 2017–2018. The data collection at T2 occurred in 2021 and included the same measures, with the addition of the Coronavirus Impact Scale to assess the effects of the pandemic on the individual participants. Over this period, there was a significant increase in apathy, but not in depression or anxiety. Anxiety and depression, but not apathy, were correlated with the impact of COVID-19.

Aim: Smartphone technology is increasingly used by the public to assess sleep. Specific features of some sleep-tracking applications are comparable to actigraphy in objectively monitoring sleep. The clinical utility of smartphone apps should be investigated further to increase access to convenient means of monitoring sleep. Methods: Smartphone and subjective sleep measures were administered to 29 community-dwelling healthy adults [aged 20–67, Mean (M) = 26.8; 18 women, 11 men], and actigraphy to 19 of them. Total sleep time (TST) and sleep efficiency were measured with actigraphy and the Sleep Time App (Azumio Inc.). Sleep diaries captured subjective TST and sleep efficiency, and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index provided self-report data. An exit questionnaire was administered to examine App feasibility and likelihood of future use. Results: The App significantly overestimated TST when compared to actigraphy. There was no significant difference in sleep efficiency between methodologies. There was also no significant difference between TST recorded through the App and through sleep diaries. Participants’ self-reported ease of use of the smartphone App positively correlated with likelihood of future use. Conclusions: Based on the current findings, future research is needed to investigate the utility and feasibility of multiple smartphone applications in monitoring sleep in healthy and clinical populations.

Background: Self‐report of motor and non‐motor symptoms is integral to understanding daily challenges of persons with Parkinson's disease (PwPD). Care partners are often asked to serve as informants regarding symptom severity, raising the question of concordance with PwPD self‐reports, especially regarding internalized (not outwardly visible) symptoms. Objectives: Concordance between PwPD and informant ratings of motor and non‐motor symptoms was evaluated across multiple domains. Methods: In 60 PwPD‐informant pairs, we compared ratings on 11 online self‐report measures comprising 33 total scores, 2/3 of which represented purely internalized symptoms. For discordant scores, multiple regression analyses were used to examine demographic/clinical predictors. Results: Though concordant on 85% of measures, PwPD endorsed more non‐motor symptoms, bodily discomfort, stigma, and motor symptoms than informants. For PwPD, younger age, greater disease severity, and female gender predicted discordance. Conclusions: Discordance between PwPD and informants on measures assessing symptoms that cannot be outwardly observed may require targeted education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective Identifying persons needing mental health services is hampered by stigma-related underreporting of symptoms, especially by men. Men with Parkinson's disease (PD) consistently report lower rates of depression than women in in-person studies. We predicted that online anonymity would elicit more gender-based parity in depression endorsement. Method We administered the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) online to 344 participants with PD (52% women). Depression was defined as BDI-II score >13 and/or use of antidepressant medications. Results Overall depression prevalence was consistent with in-person studies, but with no significant difference between men and women. Objectives: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is known to impact semantic access, which is frequently evaluated using the Category Fluency (Animals) test. Recent studies have suggested that in addition to overall category fluency scores (total number of words produced over time), poor clustering could signal AD-related cognitive difficulties. In this study, we examined the association between category fluency clustering performance (i.e., stating words sequentially that are all contained within a subcategory, such as domestic animals) and brain pathology in individuals with autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease (ADAD). Methods: A total of 29 non-demented carriers of the Presenilin1 E280A ADAD mutation and 32 noncarrier family members completed the category fluency test (Animals) and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). The participants also underwent positron emission tomography (PET) scans to evaluate in vivo amyloid-beta in the neocortex and tau in medial temporal lobe regions. Differences between carriers and noncarriers on cognitive tests were assessed with Mann-Whitney tests; associations between cognitive test performance and brain pathology were assessed with Spearman correlations. Results: Animal fluency scores did not differ between carriers and noncarriers. Carriers, however, showed a stronger association between animal fluency clustering and in vivo AD brain pathology (neocortical amyloid and entorhinal tau) relative to noncarriers. Conclusion: This study indicates that using category fluency clustering, but not total score, is related to AD pathophysiology in the preclinical and early stages of the disease.
