Over recent decades, the demographic composition of children in the United States has rapidly shifted, culturally and linguistically. Concomitantly, there has been an increased need for early childhood education (ECE) teacher preparation programs to develop a culturally competent ECE workforce who are equipped to provide equitable learning experiences for culturally and linguistically diverse children and families. Given increasing attention and calls from education researchers, policymakers, and other partners to develop a culturally competent ECE workforce, the current study sought to explore program faculty's cultural competence, specifically their culturally and linguistically responsive (CLR) teaching practices, and its association with feelings of work burnout and perceived teaching efficacy -- two factors likely to be influenced by such heightening demands and to impact pre-service teachers' own teaching competencies. Using structural equation modeling, the current study examined survey responses from 117 program faculty measuring their cultural competence and its association with feelings of work burnout and teaching efficacy. Analyses indicated that, overall, program faculty with higher levels of cultural competence reported minimal feelings of work burnout and higher teaching efficacy, and vice versa. Findings from the current study provide important research and practice strategies for the field of ECE teacher preparation.

Background: Children's early classroom experiences, particularly their interpersonal interactions with teachers, have implications for their academic achievement and classroom behavior. Teacher-child relationships and classroom interactions are both important aspects of children's early classroom experiences, but they are not typically considered together in studies of early childhood classrooms. The bioecological model suggests that both uniquely impact children's development. Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the joint impact of individual teacher-child relationships reported by the teacher and observed classroom interactions to identify associations between these and children's outcomes. Methods: Using the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth cohort, multiple regression was employed to test the hypothesis that teacher-child relationships and classroom interactions are uniquely related to children's classroom behavior and academic achievement. Further, a moderation model was tested to examine the moderating impact of teacher-child relationships on the association between classroom interactions and children's outcomes. Results: Teacher-child relationships were related to children's concurrent academic achievement and classroom behavior, and to children's classroom behavior assessed one year later. No main effects of classroom interactions were identified; however, teacher-child relationships moderated the associations between classroom interactions and children's preschool classroom behavior. Conclusions: Findings suggest that teacher-child relationships are important for children's development in classrooms, even after accounting for classroom interactions. Professional development for teachers and measurement in classroom research should address teacher-child relationships in addition to classroom interactions.

This study includes an in-depth examination of 9 students' weekly reflections and reactions to a hybrid (synchronous and asynchronous) course for preservice teachers focused on diversity and equity topics in early childhood. Through online learning modules and readings organized into six units and 14 lessons, students covered a variety of topics including race, culture, gender roles, and socioeconomic diversity. Embedded videos and activities as well as synchronous guest speakers supported connections to material. Students reacted to content by processing areas of tension and challenge, and displayed individual tension and growth across all units with weekly writing and self-reflection being instrumental in processing their reactions. Implications for developing impactful online courses focused on antibias, equity, and social justice topics and preparing educators to be aware of their own biases are discussed.

The current study explored early practicum experiences (those occurring before student teaching) in an early childhood birth to kindergarten teacher education program. Undergraduates enrolled in practicum courses completed questionnaires about their overall practicum experience including: socio-emotional components (their perceived fit with their cooperating teacher and intrapersonal feelings while in the classroom), overall practicum satisfaction, and their sense of teacher efficacy. Results revealed that practicum students generally reported feelings of being energized and relaxed, though some practicum students reported feelings of frustration in their practicum classrooms. Feeling energized and relaxed and students' perception of fit with their cooperating teacher were positively associated with practicum satisfaction and practicum students' teacher efficacy. Feelings of frustration were negatively associated with students' fit with their cooperating teacher, practicum satisfaction, and students' teacher efficacy. Higher levels of practicum satisfaction predicted higher practicum students' teacher efficacy. Findings highlight the importance of understanding early practicum experiences and what factors of the practicum experience contribute teacher efficacy. Implications for future research and practice for early childhood teacher preparation programs are discussed.

Many mothers work in jobs with nonstandard schedules (i.e., schedules that involve work outside of the traditional 9-5, Monday through Friday schedule); this is particularly true for economically disadvantaged mothers. In the present article, we used longitudinal data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Survey (n = 2,367 mothers of children ages 3-5 years) to examine the associations between maternal nonstandard work and children's behavior problems, with a particular focus on mothers' night shift work. We employed 3 analytic strategies with various approaches to adjusting for observed and unobserved selection factors; these approaches provided an upper and lower bound on the true relationship between night shift work and children's behavior. Taken together, the results provide suggestive evidence for modest associations between exposure to maternal night shift work and higher levels of aggressive and anxious or depressed behavior in children compared with children whose mothers who are not working, those whose mothers work other types of nonstandard shifts, and, for aggressive behavior, those whose mothers work standard shifts.

We apply instrumental variables (IV) techniques to a pooled data set of employment-focused experiments to examine the relation between type of preschool childcare and subsequent externalizing problem behavior for a large sample of low-income children. To assess the potential usefulness of this approach for addressing biases that can confound causal inferences in child care research, we compare instrumental variables results with those obtained using ordinary least squares (OLS) regression. We find that our OLS estimates concur with prior studies showing small positive associations between center-based care and later externalizing behavior. By contrast, our IV estimates indicate that preschool-aged children with center care experience are rated by mothers and teachers as having fewer externalizing problems on entering elementary school than their peers who were not in child care as preschoolers. Findings are discussed in relation to the literature on associations between different types of community-based child care and children's social behavior, particularly within low-income populations. Moreover, we use this study to highlight the relative strengths and weaknesses of each analytic method for addressing causal questions in developmental research. (Contains 1 footnote and 7 tables.)

The Personal Responsibility and Work Reconciliation Act of 1996 reformed public assistance programs and reduced the safety net of supports for low-income families. Children living in low-income immigrant families face particular challenges in the current policy environment. In this article, the authors consider what these changes have meant for infants and toddlers, present recent data from a national study of early childhood, and discuss how this information might be used to better support optimal development among young children in newcomer families.

We examine the effects of 10 welfare and employment programs on single mothers' use of Head Start for their 3- to 4-year-old children, considering concurrent program effects on employment, income, and the use of other types of childcare settings. In general, these welfare and employment experiments increased parental employment and the use of center-and home-based childcare, but decreased families' use of Head Start. The findings suggest that two types of policies affecting low-income families--welfare and employment on the one hand, and early childhood intervention on the other--are operating independently, and may actually conflict. Policy-induced increases in maternal employment generated an increased need for childcare; however, mothers did not appear to use Head Start to meet this need, instead increasing their use of other types of care arrangements. The part-day, part-year structure of Head Start at the time of these programs and issues of eligibility are discussed as potential barriers to the use of Head Start among low-income families under a welfare system that requires parents to work.

This article examines the effects of 13 experimental welfare and employment programs on single parents' use of different types of child care for toddlers, preschool-age, and young school-age children. Policies designed to increase employment (e.g., earnings supplements and mandated participation) did so, and consequently increased parents' use of nonmaternal child care. This study finds that only programs with policies designed to increase families' access to paid child care affected the types of care used by families. Programs that offered more comprehensive, more efficient, or more generous child care assistance to families increased the use of center-based rather than home-based care for all age groups studied; although effects were most consistent for preschoolers. Such programs also increased the duration and stability of center care. Implications for family and child well-being are discussed. (Contains 5 tables, 3 footnotes and 1 figure.)

The impacts of New Hope, a program to increase parent employment and reduce poverty, were measured 5 years after parents were randomly assigned to program or control groups. New Hope had positive effects on children's school achievement, motivation, and social behavior, primarily for boys, across the age range 6-16. In comparison to impacts measured 2 years after program onset, effects on achievement were robust, but effects on social behavior were reduced. The program produced improvements in family income and use of organized child care and activity settings, suggesting possible pathways by which the New Hope package of policies influenced children's behavior.
