We present $\sim8-40\,\mu$m SOFIA-FORCAST images of seven regions of ``clustered" star formation as part of the SOFIA Massive (SOMA) Star Formation Survey. We identify a total of 34 protostar candidates and build their spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We fit these SEDs with a grid of radiative transfer models based on the Turbulent Core Accretion (TCA) theory to derive key protostellar properties, including initial core mass, $M_c$, clump environment mass surface density, $\Sigma_{\rm cl}$, and current protostellar mass, $m_*$. We also carry out empirical graybody (GB) estimation of $\Sigma_{\rm cl}$, which allows a case of restricted SED fitting within the TCA model grid. We also release version 2.0 of the open-source Python package \emph{sedcreator}, designed to automate the aperture photometry and SED building and fitting process for sources in clustered environments, where flux contamination from close neighbors typically complicates the process. Using these updated methods, SED fitting yields values of $M_c\sim30-200\:M_{\odot}$, $\Sigma_{\text{cl,SED}}\sim0.1-3\:{\rm{g\:cm}}^{-2}$, and $m_*\sim4-50\:M_{\odot}$. The graybody fitting yields smaller values of $\Sigma_{\text{cl,GB}}\lesssim1\:{\rm{g\:cm}}^{-2}$. From these results, we do not find evidence for a critical $\Sigma_{\rm{cl}}$ needed to form massive ($\gtrsim 8\:M_\odot$) stars. However, we do find tentative evidence for a dearth of the most massive ($m_*\gtrsim30\:M_\odot$) protostars in the clustered regions suggesting a potential impact of environment on the stellar initial mass function., Comment: Submitted to ApJ, comments welcome

We present JWST-NIRCam narrow-band, 4.05 $\mu$m Brackett-$\alpha$ images of the Sgr C HII region, located in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Galaxy. Unlike any HII region in the Solar vicinity, the Sgr C plasma is dominated by filamentary structure in both Brackett-$\alpha$ and the radio continuum. Some bright filaments, which form a fractured arc with a radius of about 1.85 pc centered on the Sgr C star-forming molecular clump, likely trace ionization fronts. The brightest filaments form a `$\pi$-shaped' structure in the center of the HII region. Fainter filaments radiate away from the surface of the Sgr C molecular cloud. The filaments are emitting optically thin free-free emission, as revealed by spectral index measurements from 1.28 GHz (MeerKAT) to 97 GHz (ALMA). But, the negative in-band 1 to 2 GHz spectral index in the MeerKAT data alone reveals the presence of a non-thermal component across the entire Sgr C HII region. We argue that the plasma flow in Sgr C is controlled by magnetic fields, which confine the plasma to rope-like filaments or sheets. This results in the measured non-thermal component of low-frequency radio emission plasma, as well as a plasma $\beta$ (thermal pressure divided by magnetic pressure) below 1, even in the densest regions. We speculate that all mature HII regions in the CMZ, and galactic nuclei in general, evolve in a magnetically dominated, low plasma $\beta$ regime., Comment: 31 pages, 19 figures. In this paper we solve the conjugacy problem for several classes of virtual right-angled Artin groups, using algebraic and geometric techniques. We show that virtual RAAGs of the form $A_{\phi} = A_{\Gamma} \rtimes_{\phi} \mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$ are $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ when $\phi \in \mathrm{Aut}(A_{\Gamma})$ is length-preserving, and so have solvable conjugacy problem. The geometry of these groups, namely the existence of contracting elements, allows us to show that the conjugacy growth series of these groups is transcendental. Examples of virtual RAAGs with decidable conjugacy problem for non-length preserving automorphisms are also studied. Finally, we solve the twisted conjugacy problem in RAAGs with respect to length-preserving automorphisms, and determine the complexity of this algorithm in certain cases.

We study the evolution of eastward propagating dipoles (modons) in a two-layer quasi-geostrophic $\beta$-plane model using high-resolution numerical simulations. Various combinations of background gradients of potential vorticity in the upper and lower layer (which may include sloping topography) shed light on the recently discovered breakdown mechanisms and rich dynamics of dipolar vortices. Owing to the $\beta$-effect in the upper layer with active dipolar vortices, the symmetry of the dipole flow breaks due to an exponentially-growing, rotating, asymmetric mode of linear instability associated with Rossby wave radiation. Further nonlinear transformation is found to consist of two phases: fast partner separation, resulting in a deceleration of the eastward drift, and subsequent slow separation with a saturated asymmetric mode accompanied by much weaker, shorter Rossby waves. This weakly radiating phase -- with pulsating partners and homogenized potential vorticity between the core and the separatrix -- can be considered as a new type of long-lived dipole. Conversely, when no $\beta$-effect is present in the upper layer, the dipoles remain nearly symmetric, even when the topographic $\beta$-effect is present in the active lower layer. We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)-NIRCam observations of the massive star-forming molecular cloud Sagittarius C (Sgr C) in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). In conjunction with ancillary mid-IR and far-IR data, we characterize the two most massive protostars in Sgr C via spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, estimating that they each have current masses of $m_* \sim 20\:M_\odot$ and surrounding envelope masses of $\sim 100\:M_\odot$. We report a census of lower-mass protostars in Sgr C via a search for infrared counterparts to mm continuum dust cores found with ALMA. We identify 88 molecular hydrogen outflow knot candidates originating from outflows from protostars in Sgr C, the first such unambiguous detections in the infrared in the CMZ. About a quarter of these are associated with flows from the two massive protostars in Sgr C; these extend for over 1 pc and are associated with outflows detected in ALMA SiO line data. An additional $\sim 40$ features likely trace shocks in outflows powered by lower-mass protostars throughout the cloud. We report the discovery of a new star-forming region hosting two prominent bow shocks and several other line-emitting features driven by at least two protostars. We infer that one of these is forming a high-mass star given an SED-derived mass of $m_* \sim 9\:M_\odot$ and associated massive ($\sim 90\:M_\odot$) mm core and water maser. Finally, we identify a population of miscellaneous Molecular Hydrogen Objects (MHOs) that do not appear to be associated with protostellar outflows., Comment: Appendix figures B1 and B2 will be made into online-only figure sets for the eventual ApJ publication

We surveyed Australian finance professionals and tested whether there are statistically significant differences in promotional propensity according to gender identity. The findings indicate men and women are equally likely to ask for promotion, however, 'gifted advancements' account for the higher statistical frequency of promotions among men. These gender-based differences in behaviors have been overlooked in existing research on promotion. Autonomous navigation and exploration in unmapped environments remains a significant challenge in robotics due to the difficulty robots face in making commonsense inference of unobserved geometries. Recent advancements have demonstrated that generative modeling techniques, particularly diffusion models, can enable systems to infer these geometries from partial observation. In this work, we present implementation details and results for real-time, online occupancy prediction using a modified diffusion model. By removing attention-based visual conditioning and visual feature extraction components, we achieve a 73$\%$ reduction in runtime with minimal accuracy reduction. These modifications enable occupancy prediction across the entire map, rather than being limited to the area around the robot where camera data can be collected. We introduce a probabilistic update method for merging predicted occupancy data into running occupancy maps, resulting in a 71$\%$ improvement in predicting occupancy at map frontiers compared to previous methods. Sensitive information detection is crucial in content moderation to maintain safe online communities. Assisting in this traditionally manual process could relieve human moderators from overwhelming and tedious tasks, allowing them to focus solely on flagged content that may pose potential risks. Rapidly advancing large language models (LLMs) are known for their capability to understand and process natural language and so present a potential solution to support this process. This study explores the capabilities of five LLMs for detecting sensitive messages in the mental well-being domain within two online datasets and assesses their performance in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, F1 scores, and consistency. Our findings indicate that LLMs have the potential to be integrated into the moderation workflow as a convenient and precise detection tool. The best-performing model, GPT-4o, achieved an average accuracy of 99.5\% and an F1-score of 0.99. We discuss the advantages and potential challenges of using LLMs in the moderation workflow and suggest that future research should address the ethical considerations of utilising this technology., Comment: 2024 Oz CHI conference

Erbium implanted silicon (Er:Si) is a promising platform for quantum networking applications, but a major obstacle is the formation of multiple Er centres. We show that the previously identified cubic centre (Er-C) has C2v or lower symmetry. Using crystal field analysis of Er-C and other Er centres, and by comparison with extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements, we show that Er centres can be arranged in a sequence, ranging from entirely Si coordinated, through mixed Si and oxygen (O) coordination, to entirely O coordinated. G-factors calculated from our crystal field fitting closely match those determined by Zeeman splitting and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements. We co-implanted Si with Er and O (each to a concentration of 1019 cm-3). By increasing the quenching rate of the subsequent thermal anneal from ~100 {\deg}C/s to ~1000 {\deg}C/s, we change the dominant optically active centre, formed from Er2O3 clusters to the less energetically favourable Er-C centre with mixed Si and O coordination. Temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL) shows that Er2O3 clusters and Er-C centres have an O-related defect state at ~200 and 90 meV above the 4I13/2 Er manifold, respectively. PL lifetime measurements show that the Er2O3 clusters and Er-C centres fall into two or three classes, characterised by different non-radiative PL decay rates. Our high quench rate annealing process could facilitate the formation of a single, optically active Er centre, which is preferable for quantum networking applications of Er:Si.

Recent standardization work for database languages has reflected the growing use of typed graph models (TGM) in application development. Such data models are frequently only used early in the design process, and not reflected directly in underlying physical database. In previous work, we have added support to a relational database management system (RDBMS) with role-based structures to ensure that relevant data models are not separately declared in each application but are an important part of the database implementation. Here we present a numerical method for finding non-hydrostatic coastal-trapped wave and instability solutions to the non-hydrostatic Boussinesq equations in the presence of a background flow and complicated coastal topography. We use spectral methods to discretise the two-dimensional eigenvalue problem and solve the resulting discrete problem by standard methods. Our approach is applied to three examples and shown to be consistent with previous numerical and analytical results. In particular, we show that our method is able to reliably identify coastal-trapped wave solutions that correspond to waves seen in realistic simulations of the Southeast Greenland shelf., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Shariat et al previously investigated the possibility of predicting from clinical data (including Gleason grade and stage) and preoperative biomarkers, which of any pair of patients would suffer recurrence of prostate cancer first. We wished to establish the extent to which predictions of time of relapse from such a model could be improved upon using Bayesian methods. The same dataset was reanalysed with a Bayesian skew-Student mixture model. Predictions were made of which of any pair of patients would relapse first and of the time of relapse. The benefit of using these biomarkers relative to predictions made without them was measured by the apparent Shannon information, using as prior an exponential attrition model of relapse time independent of input variables. Using half the dataset for training and the other half for testing, predictions of relapse time from the strict Cox model gave $-\infty$ nepers of apparent Shannon information (it predicts that relapse can only occur at times when patients in the training set relapsed). Deliberately smoothed predictions from the Cox model gave -0.001 (-0.131 to +0.120) nepers, while the Bayesian model gave +0.109 (+0.021 to +0.192) nepers (mean, 2.5 to 97.5 centiles), being positive with posterior probability 0.993 and beating the blurred Cox model with posterior probability 0.927. These predictions from the Bayesian model thus outperform those of the Cox model, but the overall yield of predictive information leaves scope for improvement of the range of biomarkers in use. The Bayesian model presented here is the first such model for prostate cancer to consider the variation of relapse hazard with biomarker concentrations to be smooth, as is intuitive. In this paper we describe conjugacy geodesic representatives in any dihedral Artin group $G(m)$, $m\geq 3$, which we then use to calculate asymptotics for the conjugacy growth of $G(m)$, and show that the conjugacy growth series of $G(m)$ with respect to the `free product' generating set $\{x, y\}$ is transcendental. We prove two additional properties of $G(m)$ that connect to conjugacy, namely that the permutation conjugator length function is constant, and that the falsification by fellow traveler property (FFTP) holds with respect to $\{x, y\}$. These imply that the language of all conjugacy geodesics in $G(m)$ with respect to $\{x, y\}$ is regular.

Shannon defined the mutual information between two variables. We illustrate why the true mutual information between a variable and the predictions made by a prediction algorithm is not a suitable measure of prediction quality, but the apparent Shannon mutual information (ASI) is; indeed it is the unique prediction quality measure with either of two very different lists of desirable properties, as previously shown by de Finetti and other authors. However, estimating the uncertainty of the ASI is a difficult problem, because of long and non-symmetric heavy tails to the distribution of the individual values of $j(x,y)=\log\frac{Q_y(x)}{P(x)}$ We propose a Bayesian modelling method for the distribution of $j(x,y)$, from the posterior distribution of which the uncertainty in the ASI can be inferred. This method is based on Dirichlet-based mixtures of skew-Student distributions. We illustrate its use on data from a Bayesian model for prediction of the recurrence time of prostate cancer. Modons, or dipolar vortices, are common and long-lived features of the upper ocean, consisting of a pair of monopolar vortices moving through self-advection. Such structures remain stable over long times and may be important for fluid transport over large distances. Here we present a semi-analytical method for finding fully nonlinear modon solutions in a multi-layer quasi-geostrophic model with arbitrarily many layers. Our approach works by reducing the problem to a multi-parameter linear eigenvalue problem which can be solved using numerical techniques from linear algebra. The method is shown to replicate previous results for one and two-layer models and is applied to a three-layer model to find a solution describing a mid-depth propagating, topographic vortex., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

In this second paper we solve the twisted conjugacy problem for even dihedral Artin groups, that is, groups with presentation $G(m) = \langle a,b \mid {}_{m}(a,b) = {}_{m}(b,a) \rangle$, where $m \geq 2$ is even, and $_{m}(a,b)$ is the word $abab\dots$ of length $m$. Similar to odd dihedral Artin groups, we prove orbit decidability for all subgroups $A \leq \mathrm{Aut}(G(m))$, which then implies that the conjugacy problem is solvable in extensions of even dihedral Artin groups., Comment: Comments welcome!

In this paper we provide an alternative solution to a result by Juh\'{a}sz that the twisted conjugacy problem for odd dihedral Artin groups is solvable, that is, groups with presentation $G(m) = \langle a,b \; | \; _{m}(a,b) = {}_{m}(b,a) \rangle$, where $m\geq 3$ is odd, and $_{m}(a,b)$ is the word $abab \dots$ of length $m$, is solvable. Our solution provides an implementable linear time algorithm, by considering an alternative group presentation to that of a torus knot group, and working with geodesic normal forms. An application of this result is that the conjugacy problem is solvable in extensions of odd dihedral Artin groups., Comment: Comments welcome!

When exploring new areas, robotic systems generally exclusively plan and execute controls over geometry that has been directly measured. When entering space that was previously obstructed from view such as turning corners in hallways or entering new rooms, robots often pause to plan over the newly observed space. To address this we present SceneScene, a real-time 3D diffusion model for synthesizing 3D occupancy information from partial observations that effectively predicts these occluded or out of view geometries for use in future planning and control frameworks. SceneSense uses a running occupancy map and a single RGB-D camera to generate predicted geometry around the platform at runtime, even when the geometry is occluded or out of view. Our architecture ensures that SceneSense never overwrites observed free or occupied space. By preserving the integrity of the observed map, SceneSense mitigates the risk of corrupting the observed space with generative predictions. While SceneSense is shown to operate well using a single RGB-D camera, the framework is flexible enough to extend to additional modalities. SceneSense operates as part of any system that generates a running occupancy map `out of the box', removing conditioning from the framework. Alternatively, for maximum performance in new modalities, the perception backbone can be replaced and the model retrained for inference in new applications. Unlike existing models that necessitate multiple views and offline scene synthesis, or are focused on filling gaps in observed data, our findings demonstrate that SceneSense is an effective approach to estimating unobserved local occupancy information at runtime. Local occupancy predictions from SceneSense are shown to better represent the ground truth occupancy distribution during the test exploration trajectories than the running occupancy map., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Methods: Broad- and narrow-band imaging of AFGL 5180 was made in the NIR with the LBT, in both seeing-limited ($\sim0.5\arcsec$) and high angular resolution ($\sim0.09\arcsec$) Adaptive Optics (AO) modes, as well as with HST. Archival ALMA continuum data was also utilized. Results: At least 40 jet knots were identified via NIR emission from H$_2$ and [FeII] tracing shocked gas. Bright jet knots outflowing from the central most massive protostar, S4, are detected towards the east of the source and are resolved in fine detail with the AO imaging. Additional knots are distributed throughout the field, likely indicating the presence of multiple driving sources. Sub-millimeter sources detected by ALMA are shown to be grouped in two main complexes, AFGL 5180 M and a small cluster $\sim15\arcsec$ to the south, AFGL 5180 S. From our NIR continuum images we identify YSO candidates down to masses of $\sim 0.1\:M_\odot$. Combined with the sub-mm sources, this yields a surface number density of such YSOs of $N_* \sim 10^3 {\rm pc}^{-2}$ within a projected radius of about 0.1 pc. Such a value is similar to those predicted by models of both Core Accretion from a turbulent clump environment and Competitive Accretion. The radial profile of $N_*$ is relatively flat on scales out to 0.2~pc, with only modest enhancement around the massive protostar inside 0.05~pc. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the utility of high-resolution NIR imaging, in particular with AO, for detecting outflow activity and YSOs in distant regions. The presented images reveal the complex morphology of outflow-shocked gas within the large-scale bipolar flow of a massive protostar, as well as clear evidence for several other outflow driving sources in the region. Strong uniform Glivenko-Cantelli classes are weak uniform Glivenko-Cantelli, but to date results that prove the converse require additional conditions on the function class. This paper shows that no such extra requirements are necessary.
