Purpose: To analyze the success and survival of splinted and nonsplinted implants. Materials and Methods: A total of 423 patients (n = implants: 888) were included in the study. The success and survival of implants for 15 years were analyzed using a multivariable Cox regression model, and the significant effect of the splinting of prostheses and other risk factors were evaluated. Results: The cumulative success rate was 34.2%: 33.2% in nonsplinted (NS) and 34.8% in splinted implants (SP). The cumulative survival rate was 92.9% (94.1%, NS; 92.3%, SP). Whether to splint was not related to the success and survival of implants. The smaller the implant diameter, the lower the survival rate. The crown length and implant length were significantly associated only with NS implants: The longer the crown length and the shorter the implant length, the greater the risk of implant failure. The emergence angle (EA) and the emergence profile (EP) had a significant effect on only the SP implants: EA3 showed a higher risk than EA1, and EP2 and EP3 had a higher risk of implant failure. Conclusion: Crown length and implant length affected only the nonsplinted implants: The higher the crown length and the shorter the implant length, the greater the risk of implant failure. A significant effect for emergence contour was found only in SP implants: the implants restored with prostheses with EA ≥ 30 degrees on both the mesial and distal sides, and convex EP on at least one side had higher risks of failure. An assessment of the main morphometric features of the ramets of clones of Scots pine plus trees in a comparative aspect has been carried out. The vegetative progeny of plus trees of the species are represented as part of a clonal plantation created in 2005 in the Dyurtyulinskiy forestry of the forest-steppe zone of the Republic of Bashkortostan in an area with the С2 type of forest growing conditions. Compliance with the breeding and genetic principle of phenotypic assessment of intraand intergroup differences in Scots pine clones and ramets, as well as methodical and methodological requirements for conducting the field stage of the study, has been ensured. Taxation indicators (the height and diameter of the stem, the diameter and length of the crown, the increment of the central shoot in height) have been taken into account for 100 clones at a continuous count. A varying nature of the distribution of the average values of the analyzed stem indicators in the vegetative progeny of plus trees has been revealed. The best growth in stem diameter (25.5±0.73 cm) and height (11.2±0.16 m), as well as central shoot increment (0.45±0.02 m), are typical for the progeny of clones of the plus tree 29/17. Clones 263/40, 264/41, 262/39 with taxation indicators above the average for the entire set of trees in the clone archive are of high breeding value, which indicates the specificity of the genotypes of these specimens. The levels of significance of the differences and the intensity of selection of the best clones of plus trees based on morphometric features have been determined, which indicates the different nature of the individual non-identity of each of the plus trees relative to the rest of the trees studied. The valuable genotypes of the progeny of Scots pine plus trees identified in the clone archive can be recommended for further use in forest seed breeding when creating highly productive and sustainable artificial plantations of this valuable tree species in the region.

In patients with severe alveolar bone resorption on mandibular anterior edentulous areas, it can be difficult to place implants in the location for crowns, and to create the fixed prosthesis having an adequate emergence profile or embrasure, which makes maintenance difficult. Fabricating a removable zirconia prosthesis with a milled bar on poorly positioned implants can be a good option because of easy maintenance. In this case, the patient had severe bone resorption on mandibular anterior region, and large vertical space. We report on the aesthetical and easy-to-maintain results by placing two implants and fabricating a zirconia prosthesis using milled bar. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To assess the trueness of digital measurements using direct and indirect scanning approaches compared to the actual clinical measurements. Materials and Methods: The crown length, width, and width/length ratio were measured in 36 anterior maxillary teeth using three different methods. The first was clinically using a digital caliper, the second was by scanning the teeth using a digital scanner and the third was by making an impression of the teeth, constructing a stone cast in the lab, and scanning it to obtain digital measurements. Bland–Altman test and intraclass correlation were used to assess the data and make comparisons. Results: Measurements taken using both approaches were highly reliable, with intraclass correlations ranging from 0.934 to 0.977 (p ≤ 0.000). Bland–Altman plot reflected a minimal mean difference between measurements especially in crown width measurements. Crown width/crown length measurement displayed the highest mean difference. Conclusions: Both direct and indirect optical surface scans showed similar high trueness in linear measurements of teeth. A higher discrepancy was detected in the crown width/length ratio. Clinical Significance: Digital dentistry is the new era in patient management. The use of conventional impression techniques and physical dental casts is associated with several disadvantages. Scanning dental casts to convert physical records into digital ones has multiple advantages. Optical surface scans (digital models) of the dentition are currently being more broadly used and advocated in the different dental disciplines including the construction of surgical guides for esthetic crown lengthening procedures. The age, size and morphology of trees, including crown dimensions, can influence crown defoliation. In Croatia, the selection management of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) forests involves pure or mixed stands, either of which can be affected by various disturbances, resulting in unbalanced stand structures. The aim of this study was to estimate the probability of trees transitioning from one defoliation class to the next, examine the influence of tree attributes on that process and analyze the changes in survival over time. The study was conducted over a 18-year period (1990–2007) on two sites with contrasting stand structures: a uniform stand with a dominant share of silver fir (Site A) and an uneven-aged mixed beech–fir stand (Site B). Logistic regression was used to model tree transitions between defoliation classes. Uniform stand structure increased the likelihood of silver fir trees transitioning to a higher defoliation class, with limited dependence on the tree crown position. In contrast, suppressed and central trees in uneven-aged stands were more likely to transition to a higher defoliation due to greater competition between them. Diameter at breast height (DBH) was found to be a significant predictor of tree transition to higher defoliation classes, with a linear trend of increasing probability with increasing DBH. Crown position and crown length were also found to be significant predictors of changing defoliation class, with observed differences between sites occurring due to differences in stand structure. To ensure a balanced stand structure and enhance tree vitality, careful consideration of easily measurable tree elements such as DBH, crown length, and tree crown position is imperative when selecting trees for felling. Objectives: The aim of this study is to analyze the esthetic perception of selected canine features, namely crown length, shade, inclination, and angle of incisal edge tip. Materials and methods: The anterior maxillary teeth of a Central European woman were photographed and digitally modified in order to investigate esthetic perceptions of the above four categories. Three groups of examiners with different levels of experience in the field of dentistry (laypersons/inexperienced dental students, advanced dental students, dentists) evaluated the photographs twice with the help of visual analogue scales. Results: The best-evaluated canines have approximately the same length as the central incisor, have the same shade as the other anterior teeth, are best embedded in a lighter overall tooth shade, are neutral to slightly palatal inclined, and have a right angled to rounded incisal edge (≥ 90°). The canines evaluated as least esthetic, however, are longer than the central incisors, darker, inclined labially, and have a tapered incisal edge. No significant differences could be found between the evaluations of the groups with regard to the four feature categories. Conclusions: Laypersons, advanced dental students, and dentists generally evaluate according to the same esthetic standards. Gender does not have a significant influence on evaluation. Clear definitions of esthetically favored shades, incisal edge shapes, inclination, and lengths of the canines can be given. Clinical relevance: Since the esthetics of the smile line play a critical role for patients, dentists, dental technicians, and their supplying industry, knowledge of the esthetically preferred morphology of canines is essential. Abstract Background The anatomical features of the gingiva and the clinical crowns and their interrelation, especially in aesthetically and functionally demanding areas, are important in complex dental or implant-retained prosthetic rehabilitations. This observational cross-sectional study was designed to evaluate gender- and age-related differences in the width of attached gingiva (WAG), the clinical crown length (CCL), and their interrelation in the anterior teeth to determine the relationship between the pink and white aesthetics. Methods Eighty (54 females, 26 males) fully dentate Caucasian participants between the ages of 20 and 25 years and 36 probands (23 females, 13 males) between the ages of 45 and 55 years were included in the present study. The CCL of the maxillary and mandibular canines, as well as the central incisors of the maxilla and mandible, were determined with a dental sliding caliper measuring from the middle margin of the gingiva at its deepest point to the incisal edge. The clinical investigation of the WAG was performed by inserting a periodontal probe into the gingival sulcus in the middle of the buccal surface to firstly measure the probing pocket depth. The distance between the gingival margin and mucogingival junction (MGJ) was then measured with a Beerendonk sliding caliper in the middle of the labial curvature, and the clinical WAG was determined by subtraction of the measured probing depth. For the statistical analysis, the Mann–Whitney U test, the Wilcoxon-Test, the Spearman’s rank correlation, and a two-factorial non-parametric analysis were used. Results There was no correlation between the CCL and the WAG in a healthy periodontium. Gender influenced the CCL, with men having significantly longer teeth than women in both maxilla (P ≤ 0.01) and mandible (P ≤ 0.05). Age did not influence the CCL significantly neither in the upper (P = 0.06) nor in the lower jaw (P = 0.33). Gender did not show to have a significant influence on the WAG of maxilla (P = 0.69) and mandible (P = 0.26). But differences in the WAG between young and old participants were observed in both upper (P ≤ 0.01) and lower jaw (P ≤ 0.05). Conclusion The present observational study demonstrated that the mean values of cohorts with mixed age groups and genders should not be considered when attempting to determine the ideal relationships between the pink and white aesthetics since the statistical analyses showed significant differences between different age groups and genders.

Last years’ changes in the legislation on forest management in virgin, quasi-virgin and natural forests and the constant increase of the scientificfic and the public interest in the silviculture of virgin forest ecosystems have led to the identification of such forests and the natural monuments of virgin forests organization throughout Ukraine. The main part of this research and legislative work done within the framework of the of the World Wide Fund for Nature in Ukraine pro-jects, according to which about 100 thousand hectares of such forests have al-ready been identified, but these data are constantly updated. It was found that in these forests with 11 main species prevails Common beech (58 5) and Norway spruce (33 %), but Mountain pine (5 %) and Silver fir (3 %) are well represented too. These forests growth in 91 types of forest and biggest area have next: wet pure beech mesotrophic (18%) and megatrophic (18%) types, wet pure spruce mesotrophic (13%) and cedar pine-spruce oligotrophic (6%) types, wet beech-fir-spruce (6%) and spruce-fir-beech (5%) mesotrophic. Such significant diversity of forest types and types of forest stands in virgin, quasi-virgin and natural forests and the need to control the level of anthropogenic interference in their functioning determined the development of a new method of virgin forest monitoring based on the results of their scientific research and on the approved methods of forest monitoring and identification of primeval forests. The developed method tested in 2020 at six permanent plots in the Ukrainian Carpathians with the assistance of the World Wide Fund for Nature in Ukraine. Good conditions of these forests revealed (the best conditions had the spruce vir-gin forest and the worst – in the spruce-beech-fir quasi-virgin forest) and these forests had an insignificant anthropogenic impact (mainly infrastructure and rec-reation). For example, spruce virgin forest has average forest parameters, but the best in-dicators of condition: a low number of trees (especially in the second and third layers), average wood volume and undergrowth number, one of the largest vol-ume of the lying deadwood, the highest vitality, functionality and marketability of trees, the best position and the longest crown of trees, insignificant anthropo-genic impact (old path up to 1 m wide). Spruce-beech-fir quasi-virgin forest has other characteristics: a high number of trees, the largest wood volume and the most complex structure, one of the largest volume of the lying deadwood and the smallest number of undergrowth, one of the highest vitality of trees, insignificant, albeit diverse, anthropogenic impact (cutting of trees, dragging way up to 0.9 m wide, pollution by plastic). Beech quasi-virgin forest has the biggest stand indica-tors (diameter and height), the smallest number of trees and volume of the lying deadwood, one of the lowest wood volume, the largest number of undergrowth, low vitality and the worst marketability of trees, insignificant anthropogenic im-pact (cutting of lying trees, old dragging way). The necessity of annual monitoring of virgin forests from scientific and sozologi-cal positions to control their development and anthropogenic influence on these ecosystems has been substantiated.

Background and Objectives: The knowledge of the morphology of impacted maxillary central incisors may lead to more effective treatment. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to evaluate the morphology of impacted maxillary central incisors and compare them with contralateral teeth. Material and methods: This systematic review adhered to the PRISMA statement. The literature search was carried out using PubMed (Medline database), Cochrane Library, ProQuest, Web of Science and Science Direct electronic databases with no publication date restrictions up to July 2021. Data assessing the morphology of unilaterally impacted maxillary central incisors (ICI) evaluated with CBCT were extracted, and the quality of the studies was evaluated. Crown length, root length, and root dilaceration of impacted maxillary central incisors were compared with contralateral unimpacted teeth. Results: The initial database search identified a total number of 287 studies. After applying the selection criteria, 21 articles were selected for a full-text analysis, and four retrospective studies involving 205 patients were included in the systematic review. According to the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS), two of included articles were graded as "Good" and the remaining two as "Fair" quality. The results showed no difference between impacted teeth and their contralateral crowns, or a minor decrease in ICI crown length (from 0.15 to 0.56 mm). The root lengths of impacted maxillary central incisors were considerably shorter than contralateral incisors (from 2.13 to 3.22 mm) and, as dental age increased, root growth decreased and the incidence of root dilaceration was more frequent. Conclusions: The root lengths of impacted maxillary central incisors were considerably shorter compared to the contralateral incisors. The production stability together with the provision of required functions are the key requirements for the future existence of stable forest stands. Sufficient mechanic stand stability could be developed by the early and long-term thinning where basic tree characteristics, such as stem and crown parameters play the decisive role. We compared selected parameters of static stability in pure beech stands, which have been exposed to heavy low thinning and free-crown thinning with control stands without interventions. Data from twenty-seven long-term research subplots at eight localities across Slovakia were involved in this study. In total 7 693 trees between 30 and 110 years were analysed. Slenderness (h/d ratio), crown length, crown width and crown ratio proved to be the most explanatory parameters for the defining mechanical stability on subplots with free-crown thinning. We found the least favourable results on control subplots. The differences between the subplots with tending (regardless of the tending method) and the control subplots were statistically significant in all studied parameters (P < 0.05).

Background: Teeth morphometrics have been considered to be integral in identifying an individual as it is correlated with the body stature. Aim: The aim of the study was to determine the association between crown length and physical height of children and derive mathematical equations for the prediction of physical height from crown length of primary maxillary anterior teeth. Setting and Design: A dentomorphometric study was carried out among 100 Saudi Arabian children of 3-6 years of age. Maxillary arch impressions were taken for all participants. Clinical crown length and physical height were measured using digital Vernier Caliper and Physician Mechanical Beam Scale, respectively. Regression analysis, correlation analysis and unpaired t-test were performed for data analysis. Results: In female children, a statistically significant moderate positive correlation between primary maxillary right lateral incisor and primary maxillary left central incisor and height of the children, and highly significant association between primary maxillary left lateral incisor and height of the children was found. Whereas for male children, there was a significant moderate positive correlation between primary maxillary right central incisor, primary maxillary right canine and primary maxillary left central incisor with physical height of children. Conclusions: The research has established a significant positive correlation between the clinical crown length and the height of the children in combined sample for teeth numbers 51, 52, 53, 61 and 62. The study has derived the mathematical equations for the prediction of physical height from crown length of few maxillary anterior teeth, for both male and female children. Clinical Significance: The estimation of physical height from the tooth-crown dimensions can prove to be quite beneficial aid in forensic investigations as teeth are resistant to huge traumatic forces such as in case of mass disasters. Korean larch (Larix olgensis) is one of the main tree species for afforestation and timber production in northeast China. However, its timber quality and growth ability are largely influenced by crown size, structure and shape. The majority of crown models are static models based on tree size and stand characteristics from temporary sample plots, but crown dynamic models has seldom been constructed. Therefore, this study aimed to develop height to crown base (HCB) and crown length (CL) dynamic models using the branch mortality technique for a Korean larch plantation. The nonlinear mixed-effects model with random effects, variance functions and correlation structures, was used to build HCB and CL dynamic models. The data were obtained from 95 sample trees of 19 plots in Meng JiaGang forest farm in Northeast China. The results showed that HCB progressively increases as tree age, tree height growth (HT growth) and diameter at breast height growth (DBH growth). The CL was increased with tree age in 20 years ago, and subsequently stabilized. HT growth, DBH growth stand basal area (BAS) and crown competition factor (CCF) significantly influenced HCB and CL. The HCB was positively correlated with BAS, HT growth and DBH growth, but negatively correlated with CCF. The CL was positively correlated with BAS and CCF, but negatively correlated with DBH growth. Model fitting and validation confirmed that the mixed-effects model considering the stand and tree level random effects was accurate and reliable for predicting the HCB and CL dynamics. However, the models involving adding variance functions and time series correlation structure could not completely remove heterogeneity and autocorrelation, and the fitting precision of the models was reduced. Therefore, from the point of view of application, we should take care to avoid setting up over-complex models. Objective: The purpose of this case report is to provide a simple forced eruption technique to recover a decayed canine that was a primary abutment for a fixed partial denture (FPD). After an analysis of casts on an articulator, a forced eruption technique was applied, using the old FPD as a bracket to apply the extrusion force on the root of the canine. After 6 weeks, the desired 5-mm extrusion was achieved, maintaining the old FPD in its original position. This simple procedure has many advantages compared with the traditional root extrusion techniques. The use of the old FPD allowed preservation of esthetics and function, better application of the eruption force, guided extrusion of the tooth, and reasonable stabilization time. Aim: The aim of this study is to find out whether tooth length (crown length + root length) follows the rule of most divine and mysterious phi (ϕ) or the golden ratio. Methods: A total of 140 teeth were included in the study. The crown-root ratio was manually calculated using vernier caliper and its approximation to golden ratio or the divine number phi (ϕ) was examined. Results: The average root-crown ratio (R/C) for maxillary central incisor was 1.627 ± 0.04, and of its antagonist, mandibular central incisor was 1.628 ± 0.02. The tooth-root ratio (T/R) for the same was 1.609 ± 0.016 and 1.61 ± 0.008, respectively. Similar values were appreciated for lateral incisors where the R/C ratio in the maxillary and mandibular teeth was 1.632 ± 0.015 and 1.641 ± 0.012 and the T/R ratio was 1.606 ± 0.005 and 1.605 ± 0.005, respectively. Conclusion: On measuring the tooth length in linear fashion from the cusp tip to the root apex, we found that the tooth was divided into two parts at the cemento-enamel junction in the golden ratio. This information can be exploited in restorative and implant dentistry in future.

Background Teeth serve many functions, and aesthetics is one of the most important aspects served by teeth, perceived by the limbic system of the human brain. The golden divine ratio is the unique proportion often correlated with beauty. The present study was devised to estimate the dimension of human permanent canines and approximation to the golden divine ratio. Materials and methods The present study included 47 extracted human permanent canines retrieved from the tooth repository of our institute's Department of Oral Biology. Using digital vernier calipers (Themisto TH-M61 digital vernier caliper, 0-150mm/ 6 inch, JIPVI Ecommerce Pvt. Ltd, India, 2022), the following measurements were taken: Mesio-distal and labiolingual dimensions of the crown, crown length, root length, root to crown ratio (R/C) and the tooth to root ratio (T/R). The data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 26. Results All the dimensions' mean and standard deviations were calculated for both maxillary and mandibular canines. While the means of mesio-distal and labiolingual dimensions of the crown approximated the values reported in the literature, there was some variation in crown and root lengths. The mean crown lengths of the upper and lower canines were 10.34mm and 9.76mm, respectively, while the root lengths were 16.52 and 15.54mm, respectively. The R/C of both sets and the T/R of the upper canine only followed the golden ratio. T/R of the lower canine was slightly higher (1.64) Conclusion Although the number of included teeth was less, owing to the fact that canines are rarely extracted, our results provided new values of canines for updation in a unique population. Background: Dental morphology plays an important role in forensic odontology in identification of deceased individuals. Human teeth can serve as important evidence in identification. Dental morphometrics is a quantitative analysis of form a concept that encompasses size and shape of teeth. Estimation of physical profile from dental morphometrics has been a subject of great interest in forensic odontology. Aim: To assess the correlation between height and the clinical crown length of deciduous maxillary lateral incisor and second molar for female and males.Materials and Method: A pilot study consisting of 21 male and 24 female children between the age group of 3 to 6 years. Informed consent was received from the parent before the measurements were taken. A digital vernier caliper was used to measure the clinical height of the crown and the values were recorded. A tape was used to measure the physical height of the children. Result: The mathematical formula used to compare the physical height is taken from a study conducted by ramanan et al, For male: physical height = 660.290 + 72.970 (55 CL) For female: Physical height = -187.942 + 194.818 (52 CL) And the results were tabulated and the value obtained through formula and the value obtained using the physical heights were found to be approximately equal. Conclusion: Clinical height of the crown is seen to have a relationship with the physical height of the children thus it can play an important role in forensic odontology in identification of deceased individuals. Introduction: Clinical and aesthetic outcomes after periodontal or implant surgical procedures are determined by anatomical and morphological characteristics of the gingiva like width of keratinized gingiva, thickness of gingiva and alveolar bone. Therefore, the knowledge of gingival biotype plays an important role in modifying the dental therapeutic procedures for the desired outcome and predictability. Aim: The aim of the present study was to assess and compare the gingival biotype among genders by clinical, photographic and radiographic parameters. Materials and Methods: A total of 800 subjects (400 males and 400 females) were considered for the study. Width of keratinized gingiva (GW), transparency of the periodontal probe through the sulcus (TRAN) were assessed clinically; Crown Width/ Crown Length ratio (CW/CL) and Papillary Height (PH) were assessed photographically; Gingival Thickness (GT1, GT2, GT3) and Alveolar bone Thickness (AT1, AT2, AT3) were assessed radiographically. The obtained data was correlated to compare the gingival biotype between males and females. Background: The gingival morphology of the maxillary anterior region plays an important role in determining the final esthetic outcome. Knowledge of the periodontal biotype is of fundamental importance because the anatomical characteristics of the periodontium, such as gingival thickness, gingival width and alveolar bone morphology, will determine periodontium behavior when submitted to physical, chemical, or bacterial injury or during periodontal or implant surgical procedures and orthodontic treatment. Materials and Methods: 50 subjects with healthy periodontal tissues with no loss of attachment and (b) presence of all anterior teeth in both upper and lower jaw were selected. On clinical examination gingival thickness was recorded based on the transparency of periodontal probe. Following parameters are recorded from dental cast, i.e., crown length, crown width, papillary length (PL) and papillary width. Results: There was highly significant correlation between gingival biotype and crown length and area of papilla with P value −0.002 and 0.013 respectively. Significant correlation was found between area of crown and PL with P value −0.013 and 0.016. The results of discriminant function analysis showed that average crown length was the best single determinant of biotype and area of papilla was the next best choice. Conclusion: Within the limits of the current investigation, the existence and correlation of different gingival biotypes and dentopapillary complex dimension has been confirmed. These findings can be utilized as objective guidelines for determining the biotype and response of gingiva to many dental operative procedures.

Aim: The aim of this study is to find out whether tooth length (crown length + root length) follows the rule of most divine and mysterious phi (ϕ) or the golden ratio.Methods: A total of 140 teeth were included in the study. The crown-root ratio was manually calculated using vernier caliper and its approximation to golden ratio or the divine number phi (ϕ) was examined.Results: The average root-crown ratio (R/C) for maxillary central incisor was 1.627 ± 0.04, and of its antagonist, mandibular central incisor was 1.628 ± 0.02. The tooth-root ratio (T/R) for the same was 1.609 ± 0.016 and 1.61 ± 0.008, respectively. Similar values were appreciated for lateral incisors where the R/C ratio in the maxillary and mandibular teeth was 1.632 ± 0.015 and 1.641 ± 0.012 and the T/R ratio was 1.606 ± 0.005 and 1.605 ± 0.005, respectively.Conclusion: On measuring the tooth length in linear fashion from the cusp tip to the root apex, we found that the tooth was divided into two parts at the cemento-enamel junction in the golden ratio. • Spruce sapling architecture and growth responses to light and elevation were studied. • Light was a better predictor of sapling growth compared with architecture properties. • Ability of spruce to shape its crown morphology and growth decreased with altitude. • Diameter growth improved under better light conditions regardless of altitude. • Saplings showed negative crown length but not crown width growth in the shade. In their natural environments, trees are able to act adaptively by changing their morphology, functional traits and growth while facing different factors and stimuli. Yet, there is insufficient information on how intraspecific growth and architectural properties vary along elevation gradients, especially for young saplings of tree species regarded as highly important in forestry. We measured the height, diameter, crown growth and several architectural properties of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.) saplings along the light gradient in three elevational transects encompassing natural distributions of subalpine spruce forest in two different locations over a 3-year span. We employed generalized linear and mixed models to determine intraspecific differences in spruce architecture and growth responses to light at different elevations. Light was a better predictor of sapling growth compared to architecture properties. At higher altitudes, we observed limited abilities in the spruce saplings to change their crown architecture and enhance their height, crown length and crown width growth with the improvement in light conditions. However, the response of diameter growth to light was well pronounced in all elevational transects. Our results suggested that spruce sapling plasticity in shaping their crown morphology and growth decreased with altitude. Yet, we reported a similar improvement in diameter growth with an improvement in light conditions regardless of altitude. These results raised the question, to what extent do current climatic conditions at upper elevations inhibit Norway spruce diameter growth. We recommend that forest managers increase their efforts to obtain a desirable stem quality and crown shape by regulating light conditions mainly in the middle and lower parts of subalpine forests rather than at the elevational limit of this species. The paper presents an attempt to apply measurable traits of a tree - crown projection area, crown length, diameter at breast height and tree height for classification of 135-year-old oak ( Quercus L.) trees into Kraft classes. Statistical multivariate analysis was applied to reach the aim. Empirical material was collected on sample plot area of 0.75 ha, located in 135-year-old oak stand. Analysis of dimensional traits of oaks from 135-year-old stand allows quite certain classification of trees into three groups: pre-dominant, dominant and co-dominant and dominated ones. This seems to be quite promising, providing a tool for the approximation of the biosocial position of tree with no need for assessment in forest. Applied analyses do not allow distinguishing trees belonging to II and III Kraft classes. Unless the eye-estimation-based classification is completed, principal component analysis (PCA) method provided simple, provisional solution for grouping trees from 135-year-old stand into three over-mentioned groups. Discriminant analysis gives more precise results compared with PCA. In the analysed stand, the most important traits for the evaluation of biosocial position were diameter at breast height, crown projection area and height. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
