Granitic residual soils are considered structured soils. The bonding between the particles and the fabric inherited by the original rock play an important role in controlling the mechanical behaviour. These materials considered as “cemented” soils are often seen as non-textbook materials, since they do not fit into the usual behaviour of transported soils in the light of classical Soil Mechanics theories. To study the stiffness of the granitic residual soils located in Guarda (northeast of Portugal) several SDMT tests carried out on structured soils (natural granitic residual soils and artificial cemented soils) and triaxial tests (carry out with internal instrumentation), performed on samples collected at the same depth, at similar confining stresses, to those involved in the SDMT tests. The results show that in the stiffness decay curve the value of the stiffness modulus (EDMT or GDMT) increase with the increasing level of cementation. In addition, the strain levels involved in the calculation of the stiffness modulus (EDMT or GDMT) decreases with the increase of the cementation level, which can have important consequences for practical purposes of geotechnical design.

Controlled nuclear fusion aims to obtain energy by particles collision confined inside a nuclear reactor (Tokamak). These ionized particles, heavier isotopes of hydrogen, are the main elements inside of plasma that is kept at high temperatures (millions of Celsius degrees). Due to high temperatures and magnetic confinement, plasma is exposed to several sources of instabilities which require a set of procedures by the control and data acquisition systems throughout fusion experiments processes. Control and data acquisition systems often used in nuclear fusion experiments are based on the Advanced Telecommunication Computer Architecture (AdvancedTCA®) standard introduced by the Peripheral Component Interconnect Industrial Manufacturers Group (PICMG®), to meet the demands of telecommunications that require large amount of data (TB) transportation at high transfer rates (Gb/s), to ensure high availability including features such as reliability, serviceability and redundancy. For efficient plasma control, systems are required to collect large amounts of data, process it, store for later analysis, make critical decisions in real time and provide status reports either from the experience itself or the electronic instrumentation involved. Moreover, systems should also ensure the correct handling of detected anomalies and identified faults, notify the system operator of occurred events, decisions taken to acknowledge and implemented changes. Therefore, for everything to work in compliance with specifications it is required that the instrumentation includes hardware management and monitoring mechanisms for both hardware and software. These mechanisms should check the system status by reading sensors, manage events, update inventory databases with hardware system components in use and maintenance, store collected information, update firmware and installed software modules, configure and handle alarms to detect possible system failures and prevent emergency scenarios occurrences. The goal is to ensure high availability of the system and provide safety operation, experiment security and data validation for the fusion experiment. This work aims to contribute to the joint effort of the IPFN control and data acquisition group to develop a hardware management and monitoring application for control and data acquisition instrumentation especially designed for large scale tokamaks like ITER.

Internet of Things (IoT) devices are ubiquitous in various applications, such as smart homes, asset and people tracking, and city management systems. However, their deployment in adverse conditions, including unstable internet connectivity and power sources, present new cybersecurity challenges through new attack vectors. The LoRaWAN protocol, with its open and distributed network architecture, has gained prominence as a leading LPWAN solution, presenting novel security challenges. This paper proposes the implementation of machine learning algorithms, specifically the K-Nearest Neighbours (KNN) algorithm, within an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) for LoRaWAN networks. Through behavioural analysis based on previously observed packet patterns, the system can detect potential intrusions that may disrupt critical tracking services. Initial simulated packet classification attained over 90% accuracy. By integrating the Suricata IDS and extending it through a custom toolset, sophisticated rule sets are incorporated to generate confidence metrics to classify packets as either presenting an abnormal or normal behaviour. The current work uses third-party multi-vendor sensor data obtained in the city of Lisbon for training and validating the models. The results show the efficacy of the proposed technique in evaluating received packets, logging relevant parameters in the database, and accurately identifying intrusions or expected device behaviours. We considered two use cases for evaluating our work: one with a more traditional approach where the devices and network are static, and another where we assume that both the devices and the network are mobile; for example, when we need to report data back from sensors on a rail infrastructure to a mobile LoRaWAN gateway onboard a train. This paper introduces a new variable structure controller designed for depth control of an autonomous underwater sensor platform equipped with a variable buoyancy module. To that end, the prototype linear model is presented, and a finite element-based method is used to estimate one of its parameters, the hull deformation due to pressure. To manage potential internal disturbances like hull deformation or external disturbances like weight changes, a disturbance observer is developed. An analysis of the observer steady-state estimation error in relation to input disturbances and system parameter uncertainties is developed. The locations of the observer poles according to its parameters are also identified. The variable structure controller is developed, keeping energy savings in mind. The proposed controller engages when system dynamics are unfavorable, causing the vehicle to deviate from the desired reference, and disengages when dynamics are favorable, guiding the vehicle toward the target reference. A detailed analysis determines the necessary switching control actions to ensure the system reaches the desired reference. Finally, simulations are run to compare the proposed controller's performance with that of PID-based controllers recently developed in the literature, assessing dynamic response and energy consumption under various operating conditions. Both the VBM- and propeller-actuated vehicles were evaluated. The results demonstrate that the proposed controller achieves an average energy consumption reduction of 22% compared to the next most efficient PID-based controller for the VBM-actuated vehicle, though with some impact on control performance.
