Apparently periodic optical variations of the luminous high-redshift (z=2.06) quasar PSO J334.2028+1.4075 led Liu et al. (2015) to interpret the variability as the orbital period of a binary supermassive black hole (SMBH) residing in a single circumbinary accretion disk. The proposed orbital separation was around 0.006 pc, and the possible inspiral time about 7 yr in the rest frame of the quasar. Such objects would be of high interest as the difficult-to-find end products of binary SMBH evolution, and potential sources of low-frequency gravitational waves. However, extending the time baseline of the variability study, Liu et al. (2016) later found that the periodicity of PSO J334.2028+1.4075 does not remain persistent. Foord et al. (2017) did not find evidence for the binary active galactic nucleus scenario based on Chandra X-ray observations. The object has also been studied in detail in the radio (Mooley et al. 2018) with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), revealing a lobe-dominated quasar at kpc scales, and possibly a precessing jet, which might retain PSO J334.2028+1.4075 as a binary SMBH candidate. To date, PMN J2134-0419 (at a redshift z=4.33) is the second most distant quasar known with a milliarcsecond-scale morphology permitting direct estimates of the jet proper motion. Based on two-epoch observations, we constrained its radio jet proper motion using the very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) technique. The observations were conducted with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 5 GHz on 1999 November 26 and 2015 October 6. We imaged the central 10-pc scale radio jet emission and modeled its brightness distribution. By identifying a jet component at both epochs separated by 15.86 yr, a proper motion of mu=0.035 +- 0.023 mas/yr is found. It corresponds to an apparent superluminal speed of beta_a=4.1 +- 2.7 c . Relativistic beaming at both epochs suggests that the jet viewing angle with respect to the line of sight is smaller than 20 deg, with a minimum bulk Lorentz factor Gamma=4.3. The small value of the proper motion is in good agreement with the expectations from the cosmological interpretation of the redshift and the current cosmological model. Blazars are active galactic nuclei (AGN) whose relativistic jets point nearly to the line of sight. Their compact radio structure can be imaged with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) on parsec scales. Blazars at extremely high redshifts provide a unique insight into the AGN phenomena in the early Universe. We observed four radio sources at redshift $z>4$ with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.7 and 5 GHz. These objects were previously classified as blazar candidates based on X-ray observations. One of them, J2134$-$0419 is firmly confirmed as a blazar with our VLBI observations, due to its relativistically beamed radio emission. Its radio jet extended to $\sim$10 milli-arcsec scale makes this source a promising target for follow-up VLBI observations to reveal any apparent proper motion. Another target, J0839+5112 shows a compact radio structure typical of quasars. There is evidence for flux density variability and its radio "core" has a flat spectrum. However, the EVN data suggest that its emission is not Doppler-boosted. The remaining two blazar candidates (J1420+1205 and J2220+0025) show radio properties totally unexpected from radio AGN with small-inclination jet. Their emission extends to arcsec scales and the Doppler factors of the central components are well below 1. Their structures resemble that of double-lobed radio AGN with large inclination to the line of sight. This is in contrast with the blazar-type modeling of their multi-band spectral energy distributions. The LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) is a deep 120-168 MHz imaging survey that will eventually cover the entire Northern sky. Each of the 3170 pointings will be observed for 8 hrs, which, at most declinations, is sufficient to produce ~5arcsec resolution images with a sensitivity of ~0.1mJy/beam and accomplish the main scientific aims of the survey which are to explore the formation and evolution of massive black holes, galaxies, clusters of galaxies and large-scale structure. Due to the compact core and long baselines of LOFAR, the images provide excellent sensitivity to both highly extended and compact emission. For legacy value, the data are archived at high spectral and time resolution to facilitate subarcsecond imaging and spectral line studies. In this paper we provide an overview of the LoTSS. We outline the survey strategy, the observational status, the current calibration techniques, a preliminary data release, and the anticipated scientific impact. The preliminary images that we have released were created using a fully-automated but direction-independent calibration strategy and are significantly more sensitive than those produced by any existing large-area low-frequency survey. In excess of 44,000 sources are detected in the images that have a resolution of 25arcsec, typical noise levels of less than 0.5 mJy/beam, and cover an area of over 350 square degrees in the region of the HETDEX Spring Field (right ascension 10h45m00s to 15h30m00s and declination 45d00m00s to 57d00m00s)., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

We investigate the pc-scale kinematics and kpc-scale radio morphology of the quasar PG 1302-102, which may harbour a sub-pc separation supermassive binary black hole system at its centre as inferred from optical variability. High-resolution radio interferometric measurements obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) in the Monitoring Of Jets in Active galactic nuclei with VLBA Experiments (MOJAVE) programme at 15 GHz at 20 epochs spanning 17 years were analysed to investigate the pc-scale radio structure. Archival observations with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 1.4 GHz and 5 GHz were obtained to study the kpc-scale morphology. We find that the pc-scale jet is inclined within ~2.2 deg to the line of sight and has a half-opening angle of about 0.2 deg. The parameters derived from the pc-scale radio jet are qualitatively consistent with those obtained from the analysis of the optical light curve of PG 1302-102. We obtain at least 0.08 for the mass ratio of the two black holes in the system. We find some indication for a helical jet structure on kpc-scale, but the directions of the inner and the extended radio jets are significantly different, obstructing a straightforward connection of the pc- and kpc-scale jets within the binary scenario., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted to MNRAS

We present quasi-simultaneous, multi-epoch radio and X-ray measurements of Holmberg II X-1 using the European VLBI Network (EVN), the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), and the Chandra and Swift X-ray telescopes. The X-ray data show apparently hard spectra with steady X-ray luminosities 4 months apart from each other. In the high-resolution EVN radio observations, we have detected an extended milli-arcsecond scale source with unboosted radio emission. The source emits non-thermal, likely optically thin synchrotron emission and its morphology is consistent with a jet ejection. The 9-GHz VLA data show an arcsecond-scale triple structure of Holmberg II X-1 similar to that seen at lower frequencies. However, we find that the central ejection has faded by at least a factor of 7.3 over 1.5 years. We estimate the dynamical age of the ejection to be higher than 2.1 years. We show that such a rapid cooling can be explained with simple adiabatic expansion losses. These properties of Holmberg II X-1 imply that ULX radio bubbles may be inflated by ejecta instead of self-absorbed compact jets., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Few high-redshift, radio-loud quasars are known to date. The extremely luminous, radio-bright quasar, SDSS J013127.34-032100.1 was recently discovered at a redshift of $z=5.18$. We observed the source with high resolution very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) at 1.7 GHz with the European VLBI Network (EVN) and found a single compact radio component. We estimated a lower limit to the brightness temperature of the detected radio component, T_B~10^{11} K. Additionaly, when compared to archival radio data, the source showed significant flux density variation. We present follow-up radio observations of ESO 243-49 HLX-1 from 2012 using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). We report the detection of radio emission at the location of HLX-1 during its hard X-ray state using the ATCA. Assuming that the `Fundamental Plane' of accreting black holes is applicable, we provide an independent estimate of the black hole mass of $M_{\rm{BH}}\leq2.8^{+7.5}_{-2.1} \times 10^{6}$ M$_{\odot}$ at 90% confidence. However, we argue that the detected radio emission is likely to be Doppler-boosted and our mass estimate is an upper limit. We discuss other possible origins of the radio emission such as being due to a radio nebula, star formation, or later interaction of the flares with the large-scale environment. None of these were found adequate. The VLA observations were carried out during the X-ray outburst. However, no new radio flare was detected, possibly due to a sparse time sampling. The deepest, combined VLA data suggests a variable radio source and we briefly discuss the properties of the previously detected flares and compare them with microquasars and active galactic nuclei., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Recently Nyland et al. (2012) argued that the radio emission observed in the center of the dwarf galaxy NGC 404 originates in a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (LLAGN) powered by a massive black hole ($M\sim<10^6$ M$_{\odot}$). High-resolution radio detections of MBHs are rare. Here we present sensitive, contemporaneous Chandra X-ray, and very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) radio observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN). The source is detected in the X-rays, and shows no long-term variability. If the hard X-ray source is powered by accretion, the apparent low accretion efficiency would be consistent with a black hole in the hard state. Hard state black holes are known to show radio emission compact on the milliarcsecond scales. However, the central region of NGC 404 is resolved out on 10 milliarcsecond (0.15-1.5 pc) scales. Our VLBI non-detection of a compact, partially self-absorbed radio core in NGC 404 implies that either the black hole mass is smaller than $3^{+5}_{-2}\times10^5$ M$_{\odot}$, or the source does not follow the fundamental plane of black hole activity relation. An alternative explanation is that the central black hole is not in the hard state. The radio emission observed on arcsecond (tens of pc) scales may originate in nuclear star formation or extended emission due to AGN activity, although the latter would not be typical considering the structural properties of low-ionization nuclear emission-line region galaxies (LINERs) with confirmed nuclear activity., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. 7 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

We report on the discovery of an apparent triple radio structure hidden inside the radio bubble of the ultraluminous X-ray source Holmberg II X-1. The morphology is consistent with a collimated jet structure, which is observed to emit optically thin synchrotron radiation. The central component has a steep radio spectrum and is brighter than the outer components indicating a renewed radio activity. We estimate a minimum time-averaged jet power of 2 x 10^{39} erg/s that is associated with a time-averaged isotropic X-ray luminosity of at least 4 x 10^{39} erg/s. Our results suggest that Holmberg II X-1 is powered by a black hole of M_BH \geq 25 M_sun, that is inferred to be accreting at a high Eddington rate with intermittent radio activity., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We obtained multi-epoch Very Large Telescope (VLT) optical spectroscopic data in 2011 and 2012 on the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 5408 X-1. We confirm that the HeII\lambda4686 line has a broad component with an average FWHM of v=780\pm64 km/s with a variation of ~13% during observations spanning over 4 years, and is consistent with the origin in the accretion disc. The deepest optical spectrum does not reveal any absorption line from a donor star. Our aim was to measure the radial velocity curve and estimate the parameters of the binary system. We find an upper limit on the semi-amplitude of the radial velocity of K=132\pm42 km/s. A search for a periodic signal in the data resulted in no statistically significant period. The mass function and constraints on the binary system imply a black hole mass of less than ~510 M_sun. Whilst, a disc irradiation model may imply a black hole mass smaller than ~431-1985 M_sun, depending on inclination. Our data can also be consistent with an unexplored orbital period range from a couple of hours to a few days, thus with a stellar-mass black hole and a subgiant companion., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Ultra Luminous X-ray (ULX) source HLX-1 in the galaxy ESO 243-49 has an observed maximum unabsorbed X-ray luminosity of 1.3e42 erg/s (0.2-10.0 keV). From the conservative assumption that this value exceeds the Eddington limit by at most a factor of 10, the minimum mass is then 500 solar masses. The X-ray luminosity varies by a factor of 40 with an apparent recurrence timescale of approximately one year. This X-ray variability is associated with spectral state transitions similar to those seen in black hole X-ray binaries. Here we discuss our recent modelling of all the X-ray data for HLX-1 and show that it supports the idea that this ULX is powered by sub- and near Eddington accretion onto an intermediate mass black hole. We also present evidence for transient radio emission which is consistent with a discrete jet ejection event as well as comment on the nature of the environment around HLX-1 in light of recent Hubble Space Telescope photometry., Comment: 5 pages, three figures, to appear in the proceedings of the SF2A 2012

We present new radio, optical, and X-ray observations of three Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) that are associated with large-scale nebulae. We report the discovery of a radio nebula associated with the ULX IC342 X-1 using the Very Large Array (VLA). Complementary VLA observations of the nebula around Holmberg II X-1, and high-frequency Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and Very Large Telescope (VLT) spectroscopic observations of NGC5408 X-1 are also presented. We study the morphology, ionization processes, and the energetics of the optical/radio nebulae of IC342 X-1, Holmberg II X-1 and NGC5408 X-1. The energetics of the optical nebula of IC342 X-1 is discussed in the framework of standard bubble theory. The total energy content of the optical nebula is 6 x 10^52 erg. The minimum energy needed to supply the associated radio nebula is 9.2 x 10^50 erg. In addition, we detected an unresolved radio source at the location of IC342 X-1 at VLA scales. However, our Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations using the European VLBI Network likely rule out the presence of any compact radio source at milli-arcsecond (mas) scales. Using a simultaneous Swift X-ray Telescope measurement, we estimate an upper limit on the mass of the black hole in IC342 X-1 using the "fundamental plane" of accreting black holes and obtain M_BH < (1.0\pm0.3) x 10^3 M_Sun. Arguing that the nebula of IC342 X-1 is possibly inflated by a jet, we estimate accretion rates and efficiencies for the jet of IC342 X-1 and compare with sources like S26, SS433, IC10 X-1., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Context: There are about 60 quasars known at redshifts z>5.7 to date. Only three of them are detected in the radio above 1 mJy flux density at 1.4 GHz frequency. Among them, J1429+5447 (z=6.21) is the highest-redshift radio quasar known at present. These rare, distant, and powerful objects provide important insight into the activity of the supermassive black holes in the Universe at early cosmological epochs, and on the physical conditions in their environment. Aims: We studied the compact radio structure of J1429+5447 on the milli-arcsecond (mas) angular scale, in order to compare the structural and spectral properties with those of other two z~6 radio-loud quasars, J0836+0054 (z=5.77) and J1427+3312 (z=6.12). Methods: We performed Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) imaging observations of J1429+5447 with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.6 GHz on 2010 June 8, and at 5 GHz on 2010 May 27. Results: Based on its observed radio properties, the compact but somewhat resolved structure on linear scales of <100 pc, and the steep spectrum, the quasar J1429+5447 is remarkably similar to J0836+0054 and J1427+3312. To answer the question whether the compact steep-spectrum radio emission is a "universal" feature of the most distant radio quasars, it is essential to study more, yet to be discovered radio-loud active galactic nuclei at z>6., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication as a Letter to the editor in Astronomy & Astrophyics

There are about 50 quasars known at redshifts z>5.7 to date. Only three of them are detected in the radio (J0836+0054, z=5.77; J1427+3312, z=6.12; J1429+5447, z=6.21). The highest-redshift quasars are in the forefront of current astrophysical and cosmological research since they provide important constraints on the growth of the earliest supermassive black holes in the Universe, and on the physical conditions in their environment. These sources are indeed associated with active galactic nuclei as revealed by high-resolution Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations. It is still unclear whether the physical properties of the few z~6 radio quasars are in general similar to those of their lower-redshift cousins. In the case of J1427+3312, the 100-pc scale double morphology suggests a young radio source. Here we report on the recent European VLBI Network (EVN) imaging observations of J1429+5447, the most distant radio quasar known. Based on its milli-arcsecond-scale structural and spectral properties, this quasar is similar to J0836+0054 and J1427+3312. This raises the question if the compact steep-spectrum radio emission is a "universal" feature of the most distant radio quasars. In recent years, much effort has been devoted to unraveling the connection between the accretion flow and the jets in accreting compact objects. In the present work, we report new constraints on these issues, through the long term study of the radio and X-ray behaviour of the black hole candidate H1743-322. This source is known to be one of the `outliers' of the universal radio/X-ray correlation, i.e. a group of accreting stellar-mass black holes displaying fainter radio emission for a given X-ray luminosity than expected from the correlation. Our study shows that the radio and X-ray emission of H1743-322 are strongly correlated at high luminosity in the hard spectral state. However, this correlation is unusually steep for a black hole X-ray binary: b ~ 1.4 (with L_{Radio} \propto L_{X}^{b}). Below a critical luminosity, the correlation becomes shallower until it rejoins the standard correlation with b ~ 0.6. Based on these results, we first show that the steep correlation can be explained if the inner accretion flow is radiatively efficient during the hard state, in contrast to what is usually assumed for black hole X-ray binaries in this spectral state. The transition between the steep and the standard correlation would therefore reflect a change from a radiatively efficient to a radiatively inefficient accretion flow. Finally, we investigate the possibility that the discrepancy between `outliers' and `standard' black holes arises from the outflow properties rather than from the accretion flow., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures. High-resolution optical spectra of the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 5408 X-1 show a broad component with a width of ~750 km/s in the HeII and Hbeta lines in addition to the narrow component observed in these lines and [O III]. Reanalysis of moderate-resolution spectra shows a similar broad component in the HeII line. The broad component likely originates in the ULX system itself, probably in the accretion disk. The central wavelength of the broad HeII line is shifted by 252 \pm 47 km/s between the two observations. We present discovery of a radio nebula associated with the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) IC 342 X-1 using the Very Large Array (VLA). Taking the surrounding nebula as a calorimeter, one can constrain the intrinsic power of the ULX source. We compare the obtained power that is needed to supply the radio nebula with the W50 nebula powered by the microquasar SS433 and with other ULXs. We find that the power required is at least two orders of magnitude greater than that needed to power radio emission from the W50 nebula associated with the microquasar SS433. Context: Until now, there have only been seven quasars at z>4.5 whose the high-resolution radio structure had been studied in detail with Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) imaging. Aims: We almost double the number of VLBI-imaged quasars at these high redshifts with the aim of studying their redshift-dependent structural and physical properties in a larger sample. Methods: We observed five radio quasars (J0813+3508, J1146+4037, J1242+5422, J1611+0844, and J1659+2101) at 4.5

Aims. We selected two radio quasars (J1036+1326 and J1353+5725) based on their 1.4-GHz radio structure, which is dominated by a bright central core and a pair of weaker and nearly symmetric lobes at ~10" angular separation. They are optically identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) at spectroscopic redshifts z>3. We investigate the possibility that their core-dominated triple morphology can be a sign of restarted radio activity in these quasars, involving a significant repositioning of the radio jet axis. Methods. We present the results of high-resolution radio imaging observations of J1036+1326 and J1353+5725, performed with the European Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) Network (EVN) at 1.6 GHz. These data are supplemented by archive observations from the Very Large Array (VLA).We study the large- and small-scale radio structures and the brightness temperatures, then estimate relativistic beaming parameters. Results. We show that the central emission region of these two high-redshift, core-dominated triple sources is compact but resolved at ~10 milli-arcsecond resolution. We present the results of deep radio observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) of the globular cluster NGC 6388. We show that there is no radio source detected (with a r.m.s. noise level of 27 uJy) at the cluster centre of gravity or at the locations of the any of the Chandra X-ray sources in the cluster. Based on the fundamental plane of accreting black holes which is a relationship between X-ray luminosity, radio luminosity and black hole mass, we place an upper limit of 1500 M_sun on the mass of the putative intermediate-mass black hole located at the centre of NGC 6388. We discuss the uncertainties of this upper limit and the previously suggested black hole mass of 5700 M_sun based on surface density profile analysis., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We show an archival 1.4-GHz Very Large Array (VLA) image of the core-dominated triple (CDT) radio source J1628+3906, along with a recent high-resolution 5-GHz Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) image of its core. This core is resolved into two nearly symmetric components at ~10 milli-arcsecond (mas) angular scale. The inner structure is markedly misaligned with respect to the large-scale structure. This morphology can be interpreted as a possible signature of once ceased and then restarted activity of the galactic nucleus, coupled with a rapid repositioning of the central radio jet axis. In a search for compact (<5"), optically identified, and highly redshifted (z>3) quasars in the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-centimeters (FIRST) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) catalogues, we have also found two quasars associated with weaker two-sided radio lobes at ~10" scale. We present archival 1.4-GHz VLA images of these quasars (J1036+1326 and J1353+5725). The compact cores of both of these CDT sources are likely to be detectable at mas scales. Future VLBI observations at the highest resolution could reveal if their inner radio structure is similar to that of the Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs). The characteristic directions of their arcsecond-scale and mas-scale structures are probably misaligned which could also support the "restarting and rapid repositioning" scenario., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures.
